Groups urged to apply now for sporting grants Financial assistance and grants are being made available to NSW sport and recreation organisations through a number of sources, including the Sport and Recreation grant programs. The Participation and Facility Program focuses on providing increased opportunities for participation in sport and recreation and assisting with funding for the development of local and regional level sport and recreation facilities in NSW. Round 2 opens on March 3 and closes April 2, next year. The Sport and Recreation Events Program focuses on attracting financially viable sporting events to NSW. The program will provide funding for events that are international or national in focus, are recognised by the relevant sporting authority and provide an
opportunity for talented athletes, officials and coaches to develop their skills through exposure to and participation in these events. The Program will also support events conducted in regional and rural areas that promote participation in sport and physical activity and provide a focal point for community building and engagement. Applications (for events planned after January 2014) are now open and will close December 13. Dates for when applications must be submitted for additional rounds next year are March 16, 2014 (for events planned after late-April 2014), and June 13, 2014 (for events planned after late-July 2014). Spring time and those sexy mares! Dr ELYANE BRIGHTLIGHT It’s happening again - breeding time! Here are some tips to ensure those maiden or empty mares are well-prepared for breeding, and to optimise your pregnant mare health and the delivery of a healthy foal. The Oversexed Mare We all know these, it feels as though they are more in season than not. The pleasant ones are simply a nuisance: they present to anything and anyone, rub their tail constantly and drive the geldings crazy. The bad ones are nasty: they can call all day, run around and attack their paddock mates or even their humans. Both are easy to quieten down with one herb: Chaste Tree Yes, my only regret with Chaste Tree is that I didn’t give it to my human daughters when they were teenagers. You only need to give them about quarter cup a day, just mixed in their feed and that will do the trick. When they
quieten down, a single Tbsp (ie half the dose) is enough to keep them that way. If they hot up again, build up to quarter cup. Will that stop them from getting pregnant? Not at all, it will just stop both the extended heat and the “PMT” type behaviour. When you wish to breed your mare, just stop the Chaste Tree. Voila! The Undersexed mare These are actually more complicated because there could be a host of reasons why they don’t cycle. First you need to insure their nutrition is at a premium by feeding them yeast extract, vitamin E, Zinc. They need more protein; so feed them extruded grains such as Lupins as they are not only richer in protein but also more readily digested. Make sure the mare is not on red clover pasture. The herbs for these mares are: Nettle Leaf, Rosehip, Chamomile, Borago, Hawthorn Leaf and Dong Quai - quarter of a cup per day of any two or three of these herbs. Use less
Rosehip as it packs really tight and you get more per volume. This will work on the mare’s fertility but won’t change the behaviour of those “butter would not melt in her mouth” mares. For those silent ladies, often you just need the vet to check by ultrasound that she is indeed producing follicles. Safe herbs in pregnancy: Chamomile, Nettle Leaf, Liquorice, Thyme, Dandelion Leaf, Burdock, Rosehip, once again quarter cup of two or three of those per day (rotate them.) Less of Rosehip and Burdock as they pack tight. Also Echinacea: quarter cup a day if needed to boost immunity for a week or two but not continually. How about Raspberry Leaf? Raspberry Leaf is excellent for woman and mare but not at the beginning of pregnancy. Women should start after the first trimester; for mares it is better to start when the mare is six months pregnant. Raspberry Leaf is wonderful to tone the
uterus and helps with a swift delivery. You need to give your mare a third cup per day in her feed. Lactation herbs: If your mare does not seem to have enough milk first look at her nutrition and her stress levels. The herbs to help with lactation are Fennel, Fenugreek Herbs contra indicated in pregnancy: Dong Quai, Chaste Tree, Red Clover, Meadowsweet, Sage, Pennyroyal, Tansy, Thuja, Wormwood, Willow Bark. The above are also contraindicated in lactation. So, if your mare has a cold you can use Thyme (not Sage), if you do exercise her and she is a bit stiff do not use Willow Bark or Meadowsweet (which are great for all other horses), exercise your mare with kindness so that she doesn’t get stiff and sore. Is your mare in foal - are you sure? The Wee Foal Checker mare pregnancy test assists owners to determine whether their mare is in foal or not. Wee Foal Checker, also known as 'Weefoal120™' mare pregnancy tests, will gives owners the peace of mind of knowing if a mare is or is not in foal. These mare pregnancy tests are a non-invasive, accurate and rapid test for diagnosing and monitoring pregnancy in a mare, from 110 days after mating through to 300 days. This mare pregnancy tests can be used on any breed of horse, donkey or even zebra. It is particularly appropriate for small horses where palpation per rectum or internal ultrasound scanning is risky or is not an option. The pregnancy test works by reading pregnancy hormone levels in a mare’s urine. This is a relatively easy process and Wee Foal Checker can explain how. The WeeFoalChecker analyses a few drops of the mare's urine for the presence of hormones associated with mare pregnancy. The hormones are excreted into
urine where it can be detected by the test. This provides the breeder with a non-invasive means of diagnosing pregnancy status and monitoring foetal viability. WeeFoalChecker mare pregnancy test involves just two simple steps. Firstly, dilute a few drops of the mare's urine with the diluting solution provided with the test. Secondly, add a few drops of the diluted urine to the test membrane enclosed in a plastic cassette. Wait five to 10 minutes. If a single red line forms on the test membrane, this indicates that the mare is pregnant. If two red lines form, this indicates that the mare is not pregnant. This Wee Foal Checker mare pregnancy test does not suffer the problem of 'false positive' diagnoses, often seen with other biochemical pregnancy tests, where mares that have lost their foal are still diagnosed as pregnant. In the event of foetal loss, production of the estrogenic steroid decreases rapidly to non-preg-
nant levels, thereby resulting in a 'not pregnant' diagnosis with Wee-Foal-Checker. These tests have a 98% accuracy. It is prudent that your mare be re-tested five to seven months after first being diagnosed pregnant so that pregnancy status can be verified, and the mare managed accordingly. Wee-Foal-Checker has a shelf life of approximately 12 months and should be stored in a fridge. It is important to remove the test from the fridge a couple of hours before using the test.
This mare pregnancy test is best performed at room temperature. The Wee Foal Checker is used and trusted by horse breeders all over the world and can be order from anywhere. To order Wee-Foal-Checker call on (03) 5342 2206 or email sales@foalguard.com

Madeline teams up for NSW success Madeline Prell, a member of the Pony Club NSW Junior Dressage, Showjumping and Tetrathlon team has returned home from competing in the Pony Club Australia National Championships in Western Australia a champion with a complete set of medals to show for her efforts. Thirteen riders representing NSW travelled to compete in the National Championships held at the Western Australia State Equestrian Centre, Brigadoon at the end of September. It was a long journey to get to Western Australia and the 3824km trip took many weeks of planning as Madeline, her mother, horse, Scamp and another mother and daughter team decided to make the trip together. The convoy left on September 15 and soon all the hard work involved with planning the trip was forgotten as the journey turned into the experience of a lifetime. “I loved the trip across Australia, seeing whales and the Nullarbor,” Madeline said. “We reached the Head of the Great Australian Bight where there was a whale watching lookout, so we walked down and to our surprise saw about eight whales and their calves! “That night we stayed in our swags on the Nullarbor at a truck-stop after crossing the South Australia, Western Australia border."
Whales playing at the Head of the Great Australian Bight After arriving in Western Australia, Madeline's horse Scamp enjoyed a few days rest before the start of the Nationals competition. Entered in three events, Madeline had a full schedule on each day of the competition, with either a Dressage test or a Showjumping round, and on most afternoons a phase of the Tetrathlon. Tetrathlon involves four elements, rifle target shooting from 30 metres, running 1.5km, ride a 600m course with showjumping fences and swim the furthest distance in four minutes. The NSW Tetrathlon Junior team consisted of three Mounted Games boys, Kynan Trotter, Tom Pearce, Thomas Read and Madeline Prell. Madeline and her horse Coolaroo Scamp from Crookwell Pony Club achieved outstanding results and the status of Pony Club Page 10
NSW Pony Club President Dianne Cullen, NSW Junior Tetrathlon team, Tom Pearce, Tom Read, Kynan Trotter and Madeline Prell. Australia National Junior showjumping Champion, second in the Junior Tetrathlon team and third in the Junior Dressage team. “Thank you to everyone that has helped the team and I get to WA, I had a fantastic time but could not have done it without the help of local and state sponsors,” Madeline said. “This was my first Pony Club Nationals and I absolutely loved it and strongly recommend it to anyone wanting to represent NSW and gain some unforgettable memories. “I am forever grateful to all of those who gave me their support, I am sure it was that support which helped Scamp and I over those high jumps, thanks to you I had the opportunity to represent the state on the other side of the country. I have wonderful memories of a wonderful journey.” Madeline's advice for young pony club members hoping to follow in her footsteps “Set goals to work towards and really commit yourself to them, and if you come to hurdles there is always a way to overcome it. But most importantly enjoy the journey. The end result is great but it's the journey that really counts”. Carl Hester takes Dressage to new level EQUITANA Australia is proud to announce that UK gold medallist Dressage star, Carl Hester, will be delivering the Specialist Dressage Clinic at EQUITANA Sydney this year. Forty-four-year old Carl, born on the Isle of Sark, is one of Britain’s leading international riders in the sport of dressage. He began his dressage career in style, winning the 1985 National Young Rider Championship just 18 months after taking up dressage. In his competition career as a senior, Carl amassed a record of 63 National Dressage Titles and taken out the British Dressage National Championship seven times. He has competed in four Olympics, one World Equestrian Games, four European Championships and has reached one World Cup Final. From his first Olympic competition at Athens in 2004, where he and Escapado were the highestplaced British combination, through to the many championship wins and the heartbreak
World and Olympic champions Dressage rider Carl Hester will be holding a special Dressage clinic at EQUITANA in Sydney.
in 2008 when both his Olympic contenders ended up out of the running due to injuries, Carl has continued his upward march. In 2009, Carl and his new ride, Uthopia, achieved results of 76.11% at Premier League PSG and CDI Inter 1 winning with 76.66%.
The trail of success continued with him being part of the silver medal winning team at the 2010 Alltech World Equestrian Games in Kentucky on Liebling II. In 2011, he won a historic team gold medal at the 2011 European Championships in Rotterdam, as well as achieving individual sil-
ver medals in the Grand Prix Special and Grand Prix Freestyle with the exciting Uthopia. The pair rounded off last year with stunning performances in the ground breaking British team at the London Olympics, with scores of 75.44% in the Grand Prix and 83.45% in the freestyle, to win team gold on Uthopia. While Carl has rightfully earned the reputation as one of the greatest Dressage riders of our time, his incredible skill as a trainer is also acknowledged internationally. From winning Dressage Trainer of the Year in 1997 to coaching protégée Charlotte Dujardin to double gold at the Olympics last year, Carl continues to grow as a trainer and will help you to get the feel and technique he shows every ride! Inspiring author has story to help others Victorian Sandi Simons grew up in a small country town and, like many young girls, developed a passion for horses. However, her childhood was far from easy. At a very young age, she was placed in a situation in which her innocence was destroyed and her life affected forever. Then she watched her parents’ marriage fall apart and her mother suffer debilitating depression. She moved out of home hoping to improve her situation. Sandi soon found herself a teenage mum at the age of fourteen, and a series of abusive relationships followed. But somewhere in her heart she knew there was always hope for a better life and always horses waiting for her. After meeting talented horseman David Simons, Sandi realised that her life experiences had completely destroyed her confidence in everything she did, including riding horses. Sandi Simons ‘Powerful, intriguing, life changing.’ Jody Lyons
About the author Sandi specialises in assisting women regain their confidence in themselves and in riding no matter what their discipline or level of experience. She is a regular contributor to an extensive range of horse magazines throughout Australia. Her Confidence Clinics and Camps are in constant demand throughout Australia and she has an extensive range of books and DVDs which can be found on her website www.sandisimons.com.au She has recently initiated a brand new program for women, `Cowgirl Dressage’, to create a new experience for women and their best friends – horse or human. The program provides the next step for women who have regained their confidence with their horse but are not ready, or have no desire to enter mainstream competition. Cowgirl Dressage is also the ideal arena for
women who just want to have fun with their horse in a friendly and above all fun atmosphere without the pressure normally experienced at clinics. For more information on this unique program, visit www.cowgirldressage.com.au For those going to EQUITANA Sydney, (November 7 -10), Sandi will be giving demonstrations on Thursday, November 7 at 5pm and again at 12.15pm on Saturday, November 9. She will be available for meet and greets and signings at Stand 412 in the EPSOM Pavilion.

very apparent. Throughout his formative years, he went out of his way to learn from some incredible horsemen and the lessons and skills Pat learned from these men shaped his desire to put the well-being of the horse first. In the early 1990s, the Parelli brand took off when, along with his wife Linda, he coined the term “natural horsemanship”. The first Parelli Instructor Program was organised in 1993, and two years later, the first Parelli Centre was launched. Currently, Parelli Natural Horsemanship has centres on three continents and hundreds of thousands of students the world over. Pat remains the face of natural horsemanship, and his never-ending desire to make the world a better place for horses and humans has led to Parelli Natural Horsemanship’s reputation as one of the most popular horse training programs in the world.Pat Parelli photo Linda Parelli's experience with Pat Parelli and as co-founder of Parelli Natural Horsemanship, coupled with her time studying with classical dressage master Walter Zettl has given her unique insight into horse behavior and development. Linda's gift for identifying and interpreting horse behaviour and teaching brings out the best in their horse and makes her one of the most sought-after natural horsemanship experts in the world today. Full of passion and devotion to natural horsemanship, Linda is an inspiration to horsemen and horsewomen of all disciplines. She believes that the combination of PNH and classical training provides the ultimate recipe for horse and rider success. contact with the horse. `The Game of Contact’ breaks achieving contact down into four distinct stages to help horses be more confident with the bit and to teach riders to have more feel. Following the classical training scale, the Game of Contact provides a step-by-step method for horses and humans to achieve contact and partnership. Pat and Linda will be presenting their special training features over the four days of EQUITANA Sydney. so don’t miss the opportunity to learn from these masters!
Ready Set Trot up and running at Equitana Leaning about horses just became a whole lot more fun thanks to the new junior program Ready Set Trot. As well as getting kids active and learning basic horse skills and safety, Ready Set Trot makes it easy for young people to give the program a try as it removes the need for a horse. With the help of some of Australia’s leading equestrian riders, Ready Set Trot – ‘Kids Interactive’ will showcase some of the fun and exciting games offered by the Ready Set Trot school’s program. Young people aged between 5-12 years of age are invited to take part in this unique experience which will also offer an opportunity to meet some of Australia’s equestrian heroes. The session is free to Equitana patrons. Participants will be placed in small groups

and complete a circuit of games following which there will be time to meet and greet leading equestrian riders as well as the infamous Gee Gee! Places are strictly limited for the kids interactive session so be sure to register your interest at readysettrot@equestrian.org.au – be sure to include in the email your child’s full name, age and the session which they wish to take part. The Ready Set Trot schools program offers traditional playground games with a horsey twist that get young people active and excited about horses. A 16 hour program run by equestrian clubs, pony clubs and riding schools gives young people a chance to further their horse skills, knowledge and ability through mounted games and activities. Equestrian Australia and Pony Club
Australia accredited coaches and clubs are encouraged to attend the demonstration event to find out how Ready Set Trot can be good for business. Accredited Ready Set Trot delivery centres receive everything needed to run the program including fully prepared lesson plans, marketing resources and access to the Ready Set Trot website where you can create a profile for your centre, advertise your programs and much more. Alternatives in pain relief treatment By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist Alternative treatments for pain and inflammation Although non steroidal medications can be effective, herbs and dietary supplements may offer a safer, and often an effective, alternative treatment for pain relief, especially for longterm use. There are a growing number of very solid and convincing studies to suggest that alternative medicine may now be making serious in roads in the quest to find safe ways to relieve pain and also heal. Pain, heat, redness, and swelling are all symptoms of the inflammatory process. Abnormalities of the joints such as the spine, muscles, tendons, ligaments can result in pain and discomfort and these conditions must be managed well, by reducing the pain. Obviously pain of any description causes unhappiness and in the case of horses perhaps a change in temperament. Most pain is due to inflammation of some type and with the clarification of the role of inflammatory cytokines, the pathways by which anti-inflammatory drugs can relieve pain and discomfort is becoming clearer. The most commonly used drugs are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) medication, despite their commonly known side effects. NSAID mechanisms are primarily through interaction with proinflammatory cytokines interleukin. These pro-inflammatory cytokines result in chemo attractant for neutrophils and help them to stick to the endothelial cells for migration. They also stimulate white cell phagocytosis and the production of inflammatory lipid prostaglandin, NSAIDs' ability to impede the production of prostaglandin during the inflammatory cascade is the major mechanism cited for the antiinflammatory success of these medications. Bute, short for phenylbutazone, is probably the most widely used drug in horses. Bute is an inexpensive, highly effective
The physical nature of a horse and its muscle groups can make it very prone to inflammation.
treatment for inflammation and pain that can be injected intravenously or given orally to horses as a powder or paste. However, like any drug, bute has its disadvantages. Bute works by inhibiting a class of enzymes called cyclo-oxygenases, COX for short. Initiation of this system is a required step in the complex chain of actions that results in inflammation. However, horses actually need COX enzymes for normal kidney function, for secretion of the protective lining that shields the intestines from damage and for production of blood cells. Low-level activation of the `bad’, inflammatory COX enzymes are essential for normal healing of tissues after injury or just plain routine wear-and-tear repairs. Horses can develop ulcers either in the stomach or colon, when being treated with Bute. It is also quite possible if Bute is being used for an extended period that other side effects such as kidney damage can occur. Slowing down the production of joint cartilage and delaying bone healing has also become a topic of interest in recent studies. Bute can also interfere with thyroid function Inflammatory pathways Prostaglandins act as short-lived localized hormones that can be released by any cell of the body during tissue, chemical, or traumatic injury, and can induce fever, inflammation, and pain, once they are present in the intercellular space. Thromboxanes, which are also hormone activators, can regulate blood vessel tone, platelet aggregation, and clot formation to increase the inflammatory response.
The inflammatory pathway is a complex biochemical pathway which, once stimulated by injury, leads to the production of these and other inflammatory mediators whose initial effect is pain and tissue destruction, followed by healing and recovery. A major component of the inflammatory pathway is called the arachidonic acid pathway because arachidonic acid is immediately released from traumatized cellular membranes. Membrane-based arachidonic acid is transformed into prostaglandins and thromboxanes partly through the enzymatic action of cyclooxygenase (COX) There are two types of COX enzymes, COX-1 and COX2. Both the enzymes act similarly, but selective inhibition (as accomplished by selective COX2 inhibiting NSAIDs) can make a difference in terms of side effects. Acetylsalicylic acid works by irreversibly disabling the COX enzymes to block the cascade. NSAIDs have evolved from blocking both COX-1 and COX-2 to selectively only blocking COX-2 in order to inhibit the inflammatory response and reduce the production of inflam-
matory prostaglandins and thromboxanes. (See table 1) The major push to develop the selective COX-2 inhibitors has been the recognition of significant complications associated with the nonselective COX-1 and COX-2 NSAIDs. By locking COX-1, which also normally acts to protect the gastrointestinal mucosa, non-selective NSAIDs can cause significant gastric tissue damage. Various studies have also shown that NSAIDs can delay muscle regeneration and may reduce ligament, tendon, and cartilage healing, as mentioned above in reference to Bute. In particular, NSAIDs are believed to wipe out the entire inflammatory mediated proliferative phase of healing associated with WBC actions (days 0-4). A study of the effects of NSAIDs on acute hamstring injuries was done in humans and investigators concluded that patients who used NSAIDs did not experience a greater reduction of pain and soft-tissue swelling when compared with the placebo group. Interestingly enough, the authors noted that the NSAIDs' group had worse pain associated with severe injuries compared with the placebo group. This is not unusual, how many times have horses responded in a positive way after discontinuing anti-inflammatory drugs. There is no doubt that many anti-inflammatory drugs have been withdrawn from the market over a number of years Natural compounds for inflammation Because there are well known side effects of NSAID drugs there is a growing interest in the use of natural compounds including herbal medicine (which has a long history of use) and certain vitamins.

Taking a natural approach to pain relief From page 25 A number of these natural compounds also work by inhibiting the inflammatory pathways in a similar manner as NSAIDs. In addition to the COX pathway, many natural compounds act to inhibit nuclear factor-kB (NF-kB) inflammatory pathways. NF-kB inflammatory pathways and cytokines The NF-kB molecule is a transcription factor that controls the transcription of DNA for the perpetuation of the inflammatory immune response. It acts as a switch to turn inflammation on and off in the body. NF-kB has the ability to detect noxious stimuli, such as infectious agents, free radicals, and other cellular injuries, and then directs DNA to produce inflammatory cytokines. The NF-kB proteins are localized in the cytoplasm of the cell and are associated with a family of inhibitory proteins known as inhibitor of kB (IkB). The TNF-a, and especially IL-1b, can also directly stimulate enzymes known as matrix metalloproteinases, which break down extracellular collagen matrix, a hallmark of inflammatory joint disease. The IkB proteins are normally bound to NFkB and block their nuclear localization signal. A variety of provoking stimuli can degrade the IkB and result in the nuclear translocation of NF-kB to be free to activate DNA synthesis of inflammatory cytokines. In the human world the drug Aspirin is now believed to target both the NF-kB and COX pathways. These agents inhibit the NF-kB pathway in endothelial cells and block NF-kB activation to inhibit leukocyte recruitments. NSAIDs have also been found to inhibit both the COX system and the NF-kB pathway. Immunosuppressant drugs also reduce nuclear expression of NF-kB. Research now indicates that blocking the activation of NF-kB along with other inflammation mediators is the major mechanism for reducing inflammation by natural compounds.

healing. Herbal medications in particular are becoming used a great deal more, probably because they are generally more safe to use, with little or no side effects. However using herbal medicine requires a knowledgeable professional to advise the horse owner. It is extremely important to know the science behind these preparations and there is a great deal available now. The number one rule - have your horse treated by a professional. There will also be the need to understand what possible interactions there may be if the horse owner is using other conventional medications. There is great value in the development in the use of herbal medicines and controlled
studies on the subject has increased dramatically. There is no doubt that the development of various herb extracts and remedies is the way of the future. I feel it is very important for health care practitioners to familiarise themselves with the use of these preparations, which includes, vitamins and minerals as well as herbal medicines and required changes in the horses diet. Quality considerations The manufacturing process used to produce herb-derived compounds can create some issues when it comes to determining the quantity and concentration of the products. Many of the preparation processes are not standardized, and therefore, the extraction process and the type of plant used may affect the true concentration of the product, standardised herb extracts appear to be the safest options for consumers. Locating a reliable manufacturer or practitioner is recommended where there will be a great commitment in sourcing and testing of herbs and in-depth research and development of herb active constituents. The therapeutic applications, to the development of manufacturing and extraction processes are the main reasons why herbal extracts/medicine has revolutionized the herbal products industry. These days there are generally very high standards set to maintain quality and stability of herbal products. Working with herbs to consistently manufacture high quality products is not easy as plants are naturally complex and the quality of a finished product can vary enormously, which presents a huge challenge these include the inherent biological and chemical variability of herbs, the influences on quality of growing, harvesting, drying and storage, extraction of the herb, stability and the ultimate problem of defining quality in a significant way. Herbal medicine offers tested options  From page 26
What is herbal medicine? Herbal medicine -- also called botanical medicine or phytomedicine -- refers to using a plant's seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes. Herbalism has a long tradition of use outside of conventional medicine. Herbal medicine is becoming more mainstream with the improvements in analysis and quality control along with advances in clinical research. It is this research that is beginning to prove the value of herbal medicine in the treatment and prevention of disease. The history of herbal medicine? Plants had been used for medicinal purposes long before recorded history. Ancient Chinese and Egyptian papyrus writings describe medicinal uses for plants as early as 3,000 BC. Indigenous cultures used herbs in their healing rituals, while others developed traditional medicines (such as Traditional Chinese Medicine) in which herbal therapies were used. Researchers have found that many herbs commonly used were used in a number of different countries, this meant that there were many herbs that became reliable and the word obviously spread. Chemical analysis first became available in the early 19th Century when scientists devised ways to extract and modify the active constituents from plants. Chemists later began to use these extracts and develop versions synthetically. Almost one quarter of pharmaceutical drugs are derived from botanicals. Approximately 80% of people worldwide use herbal medicines as part of their health management. There are 600 - 700 plant based medicines are available in Germany and are prescribed by many practitioners. A high level of dissatisfaction with conventional medicines has led the general public towards a more natural way of treatment and an increase in herbal medicines. How do herbs work? It is not unusual to be a little confused when it comes to the medicinal benefits of herbs as here are so many active constituents/ plant alkaloids contained in each herb. It is very likely that these active constituents create a powerful synergy and certainly combining carefully selected herb extracts appears to enhance the effectiveness, so a more positive result is achieved. Herbs vary in many ways due to the location and climate, the soil the herb is grown in and even the way it is processed. It is not surprising that Germany is at the forefront of herbal medicine. In fact I only use certified organic herb extracts from Germany. How are herbs used? Herbs are used in many ways today in the Page 27
treatment and management of conditions in animals and in particular horses. Herbal medicine can be used in conjunction with conventional medicine if necessary. The advantages of herbal medicine, is that it is generally much safer, plus the number of clinical trials that have been conducted has increased substantially. Herbs can be used for all sorts of conditions, including nervousness, pain and healing, liver function, respiratory conditions etc. Here are just a very small number nutrients that are useful for pain relief and healing Omega-3 EFAs (fish oil) The use of fish oil (in the form of cod liver oil), an omega-3 EFA, for the treatment of muscular, skeletal, can be traced back to the late 18th century as detailed by Curtis et al. Certainly the therapeutic benefits of fish oil can now be realized but this is not suitable to feed to horses who are strict herbivores! Other oils also contain Omega 3s and research has shown that the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are some of the most effective natural anti-inflammatory agents available. A good source of Omega 3s can be found in cold pressed soy oil, cold pressed rice bran, sunflower and canola oils and in EquiSoy. White willow bark Bark from the white willow tree is one of the oldest herbal remedies for pain and inflammation, dating back to ancient civilizations, as an analgesic and antipyretic agent. The mechanism of action of white willow bark is similar to that of aspirin which is a non-selective inhibitor of COX-1 and COX-2, used to block inflammatory prostaglandins. There are some contra-indications and side effects with this herb. Curcuma Longa (turmeric) Curcumin is a naturally occurring yellow pigment derived from turmeric (Curcuma longa), a flowering plant of the ginger family. It has traditionally been used as a coloring and flavoring spice in food products. Curcumin has long been used in both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines as an antiinflammatory agent, for digestive disorders, and to enhance wound healing. Several clinical trials have demonstrated curcumin's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and
antineoplastic effects. Curcumin is known to inhibit inflammation by suppressing NF-kB, restricting various activators of NF-kB as well as stemming its expression. Green tea Green Tea's use in the treatment of arthritic disease as an anti-inflammatory agent has been recognized more recently. The constituents of green tea are polyphenolic compounds called catechins, and epigallocatechin-3 galate is the most abundant catechin in green tea. Green tea research now demonstrates both anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective effects. Green tea has a very low level of caffeine content, but here is a decaffeinated variety available; but the polyphenol content is currently unknown. Pycnogenol (maritime pine bark) Pycnogenol, like white willow bark, is a nutraceutical material that has been used since ancient times. Pycnogenol is derived from the bark of the maritime pine tree (Pinus maritima) and has been used for more than 2000 years. It has been considered helpful for wound healing, healing of ulcers, and reducing vascular inflammation. It contains a potent blend of active polyphenols, which includes catechin, taxifolin, procyanidins, and phenolic acids. It is one of the most potent antioxidant compounds known. Boswellia serrata resin (Frankincense) The Boswellia species are trees located in India, Ethiopia, Somalia, and the Arabian Peninsula, and they produce a gum resin called olibanum, better known in the western world as frankincense. This resin possesses anti-inflammatory, antiarthritic, and analgesic properties. Boswellia can inhibit the leukotriene biosynthesis in neutrophilic granulocytes by inhibiting 5-LOX, thus affecting various inflammatory diseases that are perpetuated by leukotrienes. Clinically, the substance is used in the treatment of degenerative and inflammatory joint disorders. For further information, contact Antoinette Foster on 03 9775 6422 or email enq@hiform.com.au

Understanding the amazing heart of a horse By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic Heart attacks in horses - in the very simplest terms, they do not happen. Heart disease in humans, dogs, and cats, is very common. T he equine heart is an incredible evolutionary organ that fortunately has very few problems. Make no mistake, horses do certainly have diseases of the circulatory system, but in the horse, the very great majority of problems occur in the arteries and veins, i.e. the blood vessels, not the heart itself. In humans, a high proportion of heart disease is directly related to dietary factors. The horse is a vegetarian and these causes are non - existent, however, the horse grazing pasture picks up worm egg larvae and some of these parasites spend part of their life cycle in the walls of the blood vessels causing enormous damage. In fact, a very great number of equine problems are directly associated with blood vessel disease. The horse’s heart is one of the most amazing pumps imaginable.
Page 28
The primary function of the heart is to pump blood around the body. There are two sides to the heart. The right side circulates spent blood to the lungs for re-oxygenation. This fresh blood then returns to the left side of the heart where it is distributed to the rest of the body. All organs are obviously important, but the nervous system, intestinal tract, and the muscles
are vital to the function of the horse. The enormous musculature the horse has developed is essential for, and designed to facilitate, their survival. The horse is an incredible athlete and a large part of this is by virtue of an amazing capacity to increase the cardiac output, or amount of blood actually pumped per minute. Cardiac output is a factor of two variables. Firstly the volume of
blood delivered per beat, the `Stroke Volume’ and secondly the `Heart Rate’ or number of beats per minute. Incredibly the horse’s heart rate can increase form 25 – 40 bpm at rest, to 220 – 250 bpm at maximum gallop. The stroke volume averages around 800ml per beat. At 40 beats, this equates to 32L per minute increasing to an unbelievable 176 litres per minute at a rate of 220 beats. As well as this, the equine athlete stores massive numbers of red cells in the spleen when at rest. As the adrenaline pumps in when exercising, the spleen contracts injecting millions of extra red cells into the already massive circulation and so the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood is exponentially increased. What a system. `Blood doping’ in horses is a natural phenomenon. Most human cardiac disease is caused either by a blockage the blood supply to the heart. This happens either by narrowing of the arteries by cholesterol, or by occlusion by small blood clots, (emboli), that can develop in the vessels.

The Horse Report
Small worms can lead to major health problems From page 28
The horse has three major forms of blood vessel disease that relate to our topic. Thrombi, embolisms, and aneurysms. The primary culprit in the formation of these problems is the larvae of the so called blood worms, strongylus vulgaris. These larvae are ingested off the pasture and migrate from the gut to lodge in the walls of the great arteries, particular the one to the intestine. These larvae then spend months living in the walls and they stimulate an intense inflammatory reaction which most often results in the development of a large mass of localised scar tissue, a thrombus. They can obviously become infected for one, but most commonly they regularly break off and release small fragments of tissue which then float off until they reach a passage for them that is to narrow, in which case they block the vessel and cut off the blood supply to the target organ, most often the gut, resulting in colic, but any organ can
be affected. The other reaction that can occur to the parasite larvae is a thinning and weakening of the artery wall resulting in a ballooning of the wall. These are aneurysms, and the rupture of a major aneurysm in the great vessels is a very common cause of sudden death, particularly in exercising horses. This type of problem was easily the most common cause of equine disease until the late 90s when Ivermectin was released as a worm medication. This drug was so effective of larval strongyles that we have seen a remarkable reduction in these types of problems. Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, there appears to be some resistance by the parasites emerging. The problems have never completely gone away, but we are now seeing a marked increase in vascular disease. Not heart attacks, as stated at the beginning, but very similar to the disease known as a `stroke’ in humans. It really only takes one little worm larvae to affect the horse so it is crucial to re-evaluate worming programs.

Ken presents training and horsemanship at EQUITANA Zealand, France and the United Kingdom. Ken initially went to Europe nine years ago and has conducted demonstrations at the French Calvary Horse Complex at Fontainebleau. The demo being primarily for the French, Brazilian and Argentinian eventing teams, prior to their attendance at the Beijing Olympics. The idea being, to demonstrate new techniques for their training, to help their horses perform better and with a better attitude. Kens' demonstrations in Europe are attended by FEI Judges and officials and he has helped high level dressage horses become softer and enabled them to continue on to a higher level of dressage. Ken will host three clinics at EQUITANA in Sydney in November:
Ken Faulkner from Australian Natural Horsemanship will be one of the guest presenters at Equitana this year. Ken was born in the Queensland country town of Stanthorpe, and got his first horse at age 15. He began `breaking in’ horses while still in his teens and during that time played polocrosse as well as becoming a rodeo rider, riding saddle broncs. In the early years, Ken worked on a quarter horse stud, breaking, training, handling, breeding and showing the horses. Ken first saw Pat Parelli in 1989 when he came to Australia and a friend financed him to go to a month long course in California. While at the course, he got to meet Tom Dorrance, Dr Robert Miller and Mike Bridges. During that time, Ken was asked to become a Parelli instructor in Australia. He then worked on contract for Parelli for the next 10 years conducting clinics throughout Australia and New Zealand. Ken began Australian Horsemanship about 15 years ago and now conducts courses, camps, demonstrations and colt starting in Australia, New

A brand new feeding option for horse owners who are particular about nutrition! Optimum performance levels can only be achieved when your horse’s health, condition, training and temperament are the best they can be. Ticking all the nutritional boxes can make the difference between satisfaction and disappointment, success and failure. Mitavite’s new Munga® Muesli is a cool way of providing a super premium nutritional package that supports the development of lean muscle and topline without affecting your horse’s temperament.
Munga® is grain free, highly palatable and best of all it has a low feeding rate- so a 20kg bag will last your horse about 3 weeks, making it very easy on the pocket.
