The Horse Report TUFFROCK FOAL PLUS Foal Plus is a powerful volcanic liquid, basically a colloidal collagen mineral supplement that supports newborn foals. Application 6 hours after first successful nurse is safe with 10 ml given to Foals over 10 days recommended to provide normal healthy GI function from the start, collagen generation and 10 essential bio-available minerals horses need to help their vital organs develop, naturally generate their own vitamins and make their own anti-oxidants for immune support .. as if they were born in the wild. This is what they say is base mineral support that really proved successful for TuffRock. The facts are Foal Plus product trials were conducted in the Thoroughbred racing industry over 3 breeding seasons and 2.500 foals were involved in vet supervised trails in 3 continents. Foal Plus is even more inportant now in ever increasing challenging feeding conditions with drought of irrigated pastures delivering fluctuating protein / nutrient levels for both mares & foals. Conditioner Plus (C+) for maiden or previously dry mares or EJF for older mares in last trimester is recommended. Foal Plius is available from your local veterinary surgeon and C+ or EJF easily ordered in from national distributors.

TESTIMONIAL - Dr Mark Wylie I have been working with Foal Plus over three years in the Hunter Valley. Initially during the trial phase and subsequently during the last two breeding seasons and find this product consistently good for foals. Of particular relevance is the fact we have a number of very

intensive breeding situations in the Hunter Valley and that foals find Foal Plus to be extremely palatable. I have received numerous reports in some cases foals very much enjoy the product Foal Plus is available from your Local Vet and selected retail outlets

The Horse Report

Good nutrition is essential for mare and foals By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine Nutritional Therapist, Medical Herbalist, Nutritional Therapist Genetics

Our brood mares require the correct daily nutrient intake to support the unborn foal and to ensure than when the foal is born; she can sustain the health and well being and growth rate of the foal. A well-balanced diet is essential and feeds such as the Johnsons Natural formula Mare and Foal is simply perfect. I t is high in roughage but also contains an excellent balance of grains including barley and oats. These feeds are quite unique in that they are the only clean feed available and are a steamed and compressed long stem fibre pellet, as opposed to commercial pellets which are processed prior to being produced, become powdery very quickly or soft and soggy when wet. Commercially produced pellets do not encourage normal chewing and grinding at the point of the mouth, whereas the Johnsons Natural Formula feeds actually encourage the horse to chew, creating that highly valued saliva production and digestibility. Feeding a high roughage diet to any horse is essential to maintain a healthy digestive sys-

tem and long term health. It is important to feed our foals safely and effectively, neither overfeeding nor underfeeding. There are many conditions associated with malnutrition. Often the word malnutrition is used in the wrong way; malnutrition can mean overweight or underweight, which means there is a major shortfall in the supply of nutrients to the body. Limb deformities are quite common in foals, these can be due to the position of the foetus in the uterus, and generally in this case the foal's limbs straighten after a few days and further treatment is not required. Flexural deformity occurs mostly in the forelimbs in one or both legs and most commonly in well-grown yearlings. The fetlock and pastern joints become more upright and the fetlock starts to knuckle over.

Angular limb deformity can be caused by a combination of trauma and nutritional imbalances. This means perhaps lunging of foals and yearlings, placing uneven and unnatural pressure on their limbs, long before they are fully matured, this can place pressure on one side of the Physis or growth plate causing one side to grow faster than the other. Through research we have discovered that Developmental Orthopaedic Disease (DOD) which includes OCD (Osteochondrosis), Cervical Vertebral malformation, Angular deformities, Contracted Tendons and Physitis (formally known as Ephyphisitis), can be caused by many factors, such as Genetic predisposition, management practises, disease and dietary influence. Â continued page 15

Bucked knees is a common leg abnormality that occurs in young foals.

Pregnant mares and young foals require a well balanced diet to achieve optimum growth and development and avoid abnormalities caused by inadequate nutrition.

Keep a balance of minerals in daily diet  From page 14 It is therefore very wise to seek professional advice before jumping onto any single D.O.D. Bandwagon. OCD (impaired blood supply to cartilage delays conversion of cartilage to bone resulting in abnormal thick cartilage or joint surfaces, the cartilage is therefore only loosely attached to underlying bone and may become detached causing inflammation within joint) occurs particularly in young rapid growing individuals, accelerating a horses growth by overfeeding may increase the risk of OLD. Generally the stifle and hock joints are effected and clinical signs of the disease usually become obvious in the first two years of growth. So in the case of OCD correct feeding will probably prevent this disease. Weanlings require almost twice the amount of protein than that of a mature horse. Correct nutrition means supplying your foal with right amount of water, protein, fibre, fat, minerals, carbohydrates and vitamins, a shortfall of any of these nutrients could lead to illness. Nutrients provide replacement molecules, provide energy and allow for growth. Our foal's survival depends on the survival of cells. Approximately 70% of the body is water, it is vital, as it is involved in digestion, regulating body temperature, lubrication and metabolism. Water must be readily available and fresh clean water must be provided on a daily basis. Sufficient amounts of carbohydrates must be supplied to allow for normal growth rate, athletic ability and resistance to disease. Proteins, (chains of amino acids) are vital for our foal's growth also and the 12 essential

A balanced daily diet is the best way to keep your horse healthy. amino acids must be supplied by the diet. A deficiency of protein can cause a decrease in food intake, and the condition of the coat may be affected. On the other hand feeding too much protein will mean the excess protein will be utilised as an energy source far less efficiently than carbohydrates or fat. Minerals and trace elements are also vital for growth and protection, as are vitamins. Feeding your foal is not very complicated, but it is important to remember that every foal and horse is different and they cannot be fed in the same way. Because individuality plays a big role in deciding what you will feed your foal, I do not agree with RDA recommendations, but, like many clinical biochemists and naturopaths I agree with Optimal Daily Allowances, this makes far more sense, when you consider that we as humans do not all require the same nutrient intake, we

are all individuals and so are our horses. Supplements such as BreedPlus and GrowthFix are highly recommended for you foals and young growing horses. Feeds such as the Johnson's Natural Formula Mare and Foal offers a perfectly balanced diet with the inclusion of hays and supplements, easy to feed and very cost effective. Using a Synbiotic such as BioEquus would also be ideal. For further information on managing your foal or broodmares health and nutrition contact me on 03 97756422 or email antoinette@hiform.com.au

Myth busting - showing horses drug free By VICTORIA FERGUSON As all showies know, getting their horses into the ring just right every time, is not easy. One of the conundrums is getting the balance right between body condition and energy levels. Most judges want to see horses and ponies in big condition but at the same time able to show off their paces with energy but also calmness. As a result many show horses are over fed and supplemented to get them fat and shiny but they aren't fit and they have too much energy for the job. Basically a lot of them are off their faces and of course are going to react fearfully to the atmosphere especially at big shows. The common practice of lunging horses literally for hours on end "to work them down enough to get them in the ring" and/or giving them "something" to keep them calm are just not viable options. Endless lunging is just plain cruel and ought to be banned. It creates excessive wear and tear on joints and early physical and/or emotional break down. Giving them "something" to keep them calm needs in depth analysis. Is it going to work? Will it swab? Is it safe for the health of the horse? Is it safe for the health of the rider? The fact is that horses are all individuals and will react differently to the same calming preparation. Some won't react at all, some will have a negative reaction and some will react as required. Swabbing is a deterrent for many competitors and there are others who are always searching for the magic elixir, which actually doesn't exist. Safety for the health of the horse is not always a priority, but it certainly should be. Finally safety for the health of the rider. You really don't want to be on board a horse who is spaced out and doesn't know where it is putting its feet. Natural feeding, herbs and flower essences provide a really workable solution for many horses and ponies. But if you are considering going down this track, don't just think of using a herbal "something" on the day, or you will be disappointed. However Flower Essence remedies can be a help on the day as part of the program outlined below. www.victoriaferguson.com.au/product-category/herbal-blends And they are guaranteed not to swab as they are not metabolic in their action. Herbs and swabbing A lot of showies are put off using herbs because of all the false information that has been pushed about herbs and swabbing by the powers that be in recent years. Despite this, Valerian a commonly used herb Page 16

There is a way to compete drug free and get great results - simply by providing your horse a natural diet which delivers essential nutrients and herbs.

to "calm" show horses contains Valerianic acid which is a Controlled Medication as a tranquiliser according to the FEI Cleansport Database. Contrary to popular opinion Chamomile contains no active substances which are listed on this database and will therefore not return a positive swab. In fact there are only a handful of herbal compounds listed compared with more than 5000 drugs. How to compete drug free Sorry no magic elixir. Instead you need to prepare each horse holistically as an individual and give yourself plenty of lead time. The starting point is the VF natural diet which is designed to provide all the essential nutrients through raw feeds and herbs. Feeding is not just about calories, it is about making sure that the body in question has all the nutrients it needs for growth, maintenance, repair and health of all body systems. Obviously this includes the nervous system so it makes sense to keep it in as perfect working order as possible for the horse to perform at its optimum. It is quite remarkable how many horses with nervous behaviour improve out of sight just by changing from a processed diet to a customised VF natural diet. Horses are genetically designed to eat raw food, not pellets, premixed feeds and synthetic minerals and vitamins. My clients are always telling me how people are always complimenting them on their horses‌. how shiny and muscled up, and how quiet and calm they are. Understanding each horse's individual nervous system is the next step. This is where I can help, through my consultation service, I have been prescribing and dispensing customised herbal remedies and flower essences, to horses all over Australia for 25 years. www.victoriaferguson.com.au/horse-herbalist-consultations The program is to reform your horses' ner-

vous behaviour so that slowly, but surely the reactions to certain stimuli become less and less. Being a horse they will never forget completely but a combination of sensible training, good management, VF natural diet and herbal treatments will give great results. Nothing will work if you rush your training especially with Thoroughbreds making the transformation from track to hack. The ex-racehorse usually has special rehabilitation needs, such as a liver and steroid detoxification program, over a few months, before any showing starts. This way you will get healthy condition and muscle tone which will continue to improve over time. The end result is you end up with a sound and sane horse to compete on - no worries! And the bonus is you save money on feed and vet bills.

Drug control in sport horses - some perspectives By DAVID LOVELL BSVS

The only way to stay clear of trouble is to not use any drugs on competing horses, regardless of how a product is marketed.

tory drugs combat inflammation, the usual situation being some form of lameness, and sedatives "mask" behavioral issues. Phenylbutazone is the most common anti-inflammatory and it is a very potent drug having a powerful effect on lameness. Meloxicam is a newer generation drug that also is quite powerful. Both these have an active effect for about 24 hours, after this time the drug will still test positive but it really is having little effect on the horse. Many people like to chance their arm and see "how close" to competition they can be given but the reality is that unless they are used very close to competition, they will have almost no performance benefit effect, particularly on a chronic problem like arthritis, and the "chancers" are risking all for potentially no benefit. Corticosteroids are also very potent anti-inflammatory drugs and used correctly, can very definitely help. Short acting systemic drugs, again only have a very short active time but longer acting forms, usually used injected into a joint, if used correctly, can be very beneficial. It must be very clearly understood, that such use is the ultimate masking agent and the welfare of the horse can be seriously compromised and owners should seek experienced professional advice on their use if they really care about their horse. There are a plethora of other products on the market purported to work miracles for lame horses, but believe me, most of - m them are placebo only for the

and "Masking Agents". Anti-inflammatory drugs and sedatives are certainly two classes of compounds that are commonly used and have a very obvious effect on an animal, and given close to performance, can definitely have an influence. These would classify as masking agents, whereby anti-inflamma-

Last issue I attempted to review some general principles of drug control and methodologies. Following on, I thought I might give some of my more specific perspectives on some of the compounds involved. I must state categorically, that these are my own opinions and certainly nothing can be taken as given fact. The only definitive rule about anything is that the horse must be presented for competition free of any drugs. That is the rule and the only way to stay clear of trouble is not to use any drugs on competing horses, and I might state, this is the view I support and advise clients. Be that as it may, many people like to "chance their arm", and attempt to somehow obtain a competitive advantage. At the outset, I would say I am somewhat cynical about the actual advantage many products really give but marketing by drug companies can be very compelling and many individuals like to have a go. There are two very broad categories of drugs that we can consider - "Performance Enhancers"

owners. All of these products can be utilized in an overall management program when dealing with clinical problems, but they can be quite expensive and the real return is minimal. Proper advice from a sports medicine person on their use should be obtained. Sedatives are a completely different issue, and in this case, they are used in an attempt to help the rider overcome a fractious or poorly behaved horse. Certainly there can be some advantages obtained with very low doses given to settle a horse down, but the dose is so low that the real effect is often again perceived than factual. High enough doses to give a proper effect will adversely affect the actual performance of the horse. The low doses commonly used, are becoming more and more of a risk as the sensitivity of the testing systems has increased so much, that even very low doses can be detected. Acepromazine is the most commonly used drug, and the smarty's are quite proficient about just how many "ace" tablets they can give and get away with. Reserpine, "Rakelin", was a so called long acting tranquiliser that was commonly used, but the drug was very difficult to manage in titrating the dose, as too much would very adversely affect the poor horse. Again detection methods have now made finding it much easier and fortunately its use has markedly diminished.

The Horse Report

The Horse Report Not all vitamins can be beneficial for use - especially B12 Â From page 22 Performance enhancers are a different category of drug, as "what really is enhanced performance". The most common products used have always been anabolic steroids, which once upon a time were quite difficult to detect. Methodology these days means they are much easier to detect and fortunately again, their use has declined. Arguably I guess, a case could be made for them helping a horse, but I am afraid in the way they were mostly used, they were really of very little benefit. The drugs were quite expensive and cost prohibited their proper use. (Back in the good old days, anabolics traditionally were given once a month which in reality was useless). Supposedly they helped build muscle and possibly helped over stressed muscles recover after strenuous exercise, but they needed to be used in high doses and regularly to be really useful. Testosterone is the most powerful of the anabolics, and certainly had a very potent virilising effect on the animal, but stallion like behavior meant that many animals became difficult to control. Other less virilising synthetic anabolics, had reduced activity on the muscle, but were commonly used. Nothing can substitute proper training schedules and management of the horse enabling the body's natural healing mechanisms perform these very same functions, and undoubtedly more successfully. Probably

the biggest market for performance enhancers would be in the form of vitamins, minerals, and a seemingly never ending range of nutritional supplements, that once again are used more because of clever marketing rather than real effect. Certainly all these products are essential for body function and deficiencies will significantly reduce the ability to function, but giving an animal any more of a compound than it needs is completely wasted as the body excretes it in the urine. Most of these products do not affect the swabbing as they are natural compounds. One particular vitamin has now emerged as a potentially disastrous product to use. That is vitamin B12. This has traditionally been one of the most commonly used products in the equine industry, but has now been recognized as causing terrible trouble, particularly in the racing industry. Most will be well aware of the enormous publicity, and severe penalties imposed on many trainers because of "cobalt" positives. Extensive research led by my very good friend Dr Derek Major of Sydney, has now determined that many of these positives have occurred because of the over use of Vitamin B12 B12, has never been a restricted drug and has been one of the most commonly used supplements in the industry - because it is an essential co factor in blood cell manufacture and energy metabolism. The actual real name of B12 is "cyanocobalamine", the critical words being "cobal". As it

has always been known, cobalt is an essential part of the vitamin molecule, but it on its own in this form has no independent effect on the horse because the mineral is firmly entwined in the vitamin molecule and not available for any other so called effect on the horse. As it has transpired, in the drug detection process used in the laboratory, the B12 molecule is destroyed and cobalt has been released. This cobalt has then been detected and trainers advised of a positive. This was never the intention of racing authorities, to penalize for a compound such as this that was excreted from the horse as a vitamin molecule with the "organic" cobalt enshrined in the B12, not able to directly have any effect. The product they were trying to crack down on, was cobalt chloride, ("inorganic" cobalt"), which is a pure salt of cobalt. A lot of this is very controversial in the industry, and particularly the ability of inorganic cobalt to really have any effect and this has been part of the reason for so much controversy. Make no mistake, there was certainly a lot of deliberate use of cobalt in the racing industry in a perceived attempt to alter performance and racing stewards were very correct to crack down on it, but there have been so many cobalt positives around the country, particularly in the years since the danger of giving cobalt was realized, and yet trainers were still getting positives. As it now turns out, many of these were really due to the inadvertent use of Vitamin B12.

Positive Change in just 10 minutes per day. By TANJA KRAUS Horse people - if there is one thing we have in common across breeds, disciplines, where we live in the world, the one thing that most of us complain about is a lack of time. Particularly for recreational riders who have horses alongside a 'normal' job or career, and a family who may not be as interested in the neddies as you are. One thing that I notice about our horse community though, is that for some reason there is an attachment of 'an hour' when it comes to training a horse - horse riding lessons are usually booked for an hour at a time. If there is one thing that I have learned over the years it is that positive change can be created in our horses in just 10 minutes per day. If anyone has been catching my facebook TV 'The Millie Diaries' you will see plenty of episodes where I say ' I wasn't going to do anything today as I only had 5 minutes' but I do it anyway, and in the scheme of things it is a positive investment in her training, and has made a real difference in her confidence, and achieving the goals that I set out for her over the month. In fact, all the goals I set were achieved in that month, with the exception of the hoof trimmer being able to trim her back feet (I can pick them up, and file them, and he has done her front feed without issue, but she still struggles with confidence on the

Photo by Fiona Grace Set goals, train regularly and you can achieve a lot

back feet). Over 33 sessions of anything from 3 minutes to 14 minutes, the mare went from worried, not wanting to be caught, unwormed and un-trimmed to walking up to be caught, increased confidence, front hoofs trimmed professionally and back feet by me, and wormed. I think what it is really about is having that change in our mindset (isnt it always!). When you arrive at the paddock, sometimes it is easier to just make up the feeds, rug the horses and drive away, instead of putting the halter on, doing some ground exercises, and then

HAPPY HORSES BITLESS

rugging and feeding. Of course even saddle work can be done in a limited amount of time, but we do have to be concious of what our horse is actually fit for. You can't expect to ride once a week on a Sunday for a few hours, and expect that 1) your horse is fit enough for that and 2) that it isn't going to cause him discomfort or soreness (try train-

ing only once per week at the gym). We are far better off doing ground work, or light ridden work several times per week, in order to have our horses using their bodies in a positive way that builds. Again, you would be far better off stretching for 10 minutes per day, than doing one yoga class per week for an hour. Sometimes it is about not knowing what to do, and there are definitely programs that can help you choose exercises (including our new online training platform). Over the years we have seen some amazing progress in horses and humans that undertook the #tkh100 revolution challenge - 100 days of doing something more than just feeding your horses. But I understand that 100 days commitment may be a little daunting to start with - why don't we try a #tkh30daystochange challenge? Use that hashtag and tag me (Tanja Kraus Horsemanship on both facebook and instagram) and lets see if we can change our mindsets! Happy training!

Aussie legends share their knowledge Aussie equine legends Ian Francis and Clinton Anderson will be sharing some of their combined knowledge in December at Caboolture. On the 14th and 15th December, join Ian and Clinton at the Undercover Arena at the Queensland State Equestrian Centre at Caboolture just north of Brisbane as they present a weekend of the techniques and methods that have made them both successful horsemen and clinicians. Born and raised in Australia, Clinton grew up with a love of horses. Clinton Anderson and Downunder Horsemanship Method are recognized as world leaders in the equestrian industry and continue to offer the very best in innovation, inspiration and instruction. The Method is based on mutual respect and understanding between horse and rider, and gives horsemen the knowledge they need to train their horses to be safe, consistent and willing partners. A step by step program, the Method has helped thousands of horses and owners form a safe, enjoyable partnership. Clinton Anderson and the Downunder Horsemanship Method have helped thousands of horses and riders. Ian has had a competitive career in the Western Arena for over 30 years and his success in the showring speaks for itself he has multiple National and State Championships across all AQHA disciplines, he has multiple National and State Championships in Working Cowhorse, Reining and Cutting and has two

Cloncurry Stockmans' Challenge Cups. Ian's teaching focuses on getting riders to develop their feel and their timing and to understand and think about their control of the horse's body parts, and how to put this together so their horse can perform in an efficient and functional way - so the horse can relax and be soft and supple. If you have been to the last two "Aussie Tours" - then you are in for a whole new format. Working with a horse that has never been saddled or ridden, Clinton explains how to lay a foundation for a successful first ride with a horse. From introducing the saddle, through to the first ride, you will learn Clinton's step by step process and the extra steps he takes to ensure that horse and rider stay safe. Ian will follow this up by working a young horse in the round pen to get control of his feet and his mind and then he will work with an older horse to improve his understanding of how to relate to the bridle. During the weekend Clinton will present loping drills and ground work exercises while Ian will share the exercises and maneuvers he uses to prepare his horses for cattle related events. If you have been thinking about going to see Ian and Clinton then book your tickets now. This is a rare opportunity to not only see Clinton demonstrate in Australia but see Clinton and Ian together. Tickets for adults are $100 per day or $175 for the weekend. Full details about the weekend can be found at www.ianfran-

Ian Francis and Clinton Anderson cishorsemanship.com.au or ring Virginia on 07 4168 5444. There is plenty of parking at the venue and food vendors will operate both days. The Queensland State Equestrian Centre is at Caboolture 45 minutes from the Brisbane airport. Camping and gooseneck/vans hook up is available. Booking for camp sites will be available through nominate mid October.

Brumby 250 Tournament a great success By KATHRYN MASSEY Hunter Valley Brumby Association Inc The Brumby 250 inaugural event is an invitational only competition showcasing elite trainers that have proven their care, compassion and experience with Brumbies. The task - train four of Australia's wild horses to compete at the Working Equitation Down Under (WEDU) Nationals and be evaluated by judges from Australia, New Zealand, United States, Germany and Portugal. Two weeks later, compete at an agricultural show in led and ridden classes and then entertain thousands of people in a freestyle event, all while battling it out for more than $10,000 in cash and prizes. That was the undertaking by trainers Jane Tudor and Jack Searl of the Hunter Valley, Billy Fish, from the central coast and Hannah Pikkat of the northern beaches of Sydney, in a first for NSW and presented by the Hunter Valley Brumby Association. Throughout the 250 days of training, all of the trainers utilised local shows and events to prepare for what was ahead in the finals. HVBA Hope, Gypsy and Tess won plenty of ribbons at the Brumby classes at Morrissett Show and Jane and HVBA Hope won Champion Brumby at Newcastle Show. All of the brumbies and trainers attended a WEDU camp and competition with Billy and HVBA Tess winning champion in the cattle phase beating a field of 25 competitors, many of which were seasoned campdrafters. The WEDU Nationals saw the Kosciuszko Brumbies being put through their paces in dressage, cattle, and an obstacle course and tackling the obstacles at speed in torrential rain. The judges were astounded at how versatile and easily trained the Brumbies were in such a short amount of time to compete amongst many experienced riders and horses. Hannah and HVBA Gypsy won second place

Jane Tudor from Stanhope in the Hunter Valley is an avid dressage, showjumping and eventing rider and is no stranger to saddle training Brumbies. Jane and HVBA Hope took home The Brumby 250 Tournament Champion buckle for 2019.

in the cattle phase in a field of 20 competitors, and won an amazing sixth place in the Preparatory class and Jane and HVBA Hope won and incredible third overall in the Preparatory class - a field of 36 competitors. Everyone arrived for Stroud Show on the 26th of April and the nerves were high amongst the trainers for what lied ahead. But all of the Brumbies were nice and relaxed for the led and ridden classes with Billy and HVBA Tess taking out Champion Brumby amongst other very experienced show Brumbies. Going in to the freestyle the following day, the points were very tight as the crowds

poured in to the showground. People had travelled from as far as Melbourne just to see the Brumbies. As the theme from the Man From Snowy River played over the grounds, signalling the freestyle was about to begin, the crowds were up to five deep as people gathered for a prime spot. Jane and Hope had the crowd going with their 70s disco theme and her and Hope, dressed in lots of paisley and lime green, showing everyone, including our judges, what an incredible all-rounder this Brumby really is. Promoting Brumbies throughout the Hunter  from page 34 Next was Jack Searl on Luna, proudly carrying the Australian flag and displaying what a true horseman he really is as he showed off what beautiful natural carriage and fluid paces this mare has. Billy and Tess treated the crowd to a liberty display and giving them a wave from the back of a ute. Until now, Hannah had never saddle trained a horse before, but not only did she accomplish saddle training, but also trained Gypsy to harness. Hannah and Gypsy delighted the crowd with their beautiful costume and harness routine but also dropping the carriage for a bareback ridden display. The Champion of the Brumby 250 Tournament was Jane and HVBA Hope taking home $2000 cash and the Champion buckle. All of the trainers went home with a new pair of boots and clothing from ARIAT, rug from Easy On Rugs and sports bag from Annie McKee, Brumby 250 clothing embroidered by Osiris Embroidery and supreme horse first aid kit from Equitage. Only five points, out of 1000, separated second and third place and second place was Billy and Tess who also won a round yard courtesy of Bordin Bros and Norco. Third place was Hannah and Gypsy winning a Polaris generator from KP & DC Machinery with Jack and Luna in fourth place. And in a shock twist - Hope, Gypsy and Tess were all adopted by their trainers.

The Hunter Valley Brumby Association was formed in 2009 to Protect and Promote Brumbies throughout the Hunter region and to provide refuge, rehabilitation and educational facilities through our HVBA Sanctuary and to give Brumby owners a structure in the Hunter Region. The HVBA promotes Brumbies as a breed of choice, to improve popularity and showcase the breed to individuals and interested groups. In the past this was achieved by directly liaising with local show committees to include dedicated Brumby classes in their show programs. These days we are able to liase with the Australian Brumby Horse Register and regularly attend events and shows that showcase brumbies or include dedicated classes. We also promote the plight of brumbies via various media, including social media. The HVBA works tirelessly to protect the three main Brumby populations in the

Hunter by ensuring that Wild Horse Management Plans of the National Parks and Wildlife Service and State Forests, for the removal of Brumbies will be conducted humanely at all times. The HVBA is also working hand in hand with other charities and interest groups through out Australia - with one key goal for Government protection of Australia’s Wild Horses. HVBA is fully endorsed by the Tax Office as an animal welfare charity. This means that all donations over $2.00 are fully tax deductible. Your support is vital to help save more Brumbies, offer safe haven for those rescued and offer Brumbies for adoption in the Hunter Region. HVBA hopes you enjoy looking around the website and please feel free to contact them on info@hvba.com.au if you have any questions or visit www.hvba.com.au

New Chairperson announced for ASHS Board The Australian Stock Horse Society is proud to announce that their new Chairperson is Ms Lorna Fanning from Queensland. Ms Fanning from Warwick is a well-known local personality in the Campdraft and Stock Horse world. Commenting after her first Board meeting as Chairman, Mrs Fanning said that she was really pleased with both the direction and work ethic of the new Board. "Over the last two days we made decisions around member benefits, a Loyalty Program, a Heritage Stud Book, implementing a Base Register for horses that are not currently eligible for Stud Book Registration, she said. “We have also focused on the 50th Anniversary celebrations and a whole lot more. "We were also delighted with news that with over 1000 sires now tested for genetic disorders, that only around 1% had come back testing as a carrier. "This has given us the opportunity to manage the problem within our Stud Book. "I am so pleased and humbled to be given the honour of leading this great organisation for the next 12 months. We have a great deal of work to do in preparation for our 50th anniversary and I am very keen to ensure that we honour our past and set a great platform for our future."
