Opportunity for teams to ride at Equitana Pony Club Australia has been invited to run a pony club competition and display on the main arena, as part of this year’s Equitana.

Four teams will be selected in May/June to take part in the three-hour program.

Prizes will be awarded for Event 1 competition placegetters (1st - 4th), and sashes/ mementos for those in Event 2.

The proposed main arena program will have two events: Event 1. A two-phase competition – mounted games/stockman’s challenge.

This will be a mounted games competition for four teams of six to seven riders with four riders in each team aged 16 or under, and a Stockman’s Challenge.

For the Stockman’s Challenge, the mounted games riders compete individually and their team’s best six scores are added to their team’s mounted games result for an overall Event 1 score.

The six best Stockman’s Challenge scores will receive individual awards as well.

• The list of six games and the Stockman’s Challenge course map will be provided to

competitors once teams are selected.

• Clubs can nominate a team of six or seven riders (ie a reserve for games) Event 2. Demonstration rides by two musical ride teams who have placed at their 2021 or 2020 Musical Ride state championships or similar.

(Potential teams will be required to send in videos if more than two nominations received.) These riders may also participate in the Stockman's Challenge as individuals.

What clubs need to consider: (especially regional and interstate teams) • Equitana may be affected by COVID-19 so

there may be a cancellation at short notice or restrictions on interstate movement • There will be free parking on site for competitors on the day, plus a general admission entry pass for the rider, strapper and one parent/adult giving access to other areas as well.

• There is no overnight parking at the venue but billeting near Melbourne with local pony clubs may be able to be arranged for those travelling a longer distance.

If your club’s team is selected, you will be asked to provide support in at least one of the following ways: • Games or Stockman’s Challenge equipment.

• Someone prepared to volunteer for the committee to help organise the program.

• Workers on the day to help set up and pack up equipment etc. on a roster basis.

Riders enjoy weekend at Wandin Eventing

By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA The Horseland Australian Eventing Championships took place recently at Wandin Park in Victoria.

As well as a range of National classes, the event also held FEI international classes ranging from CCI2* through to CCI4*.

The Horseland CCI4*-S class was won by Sam Jeffree riding Woodmount Lolita.

It was the first win for the combination at CCI4*-S level following their second place at Tonimbuk Horse Trials earlier this month.

In the Horseland CCI3*-S it was Will Enzinger who emerged victorious riding Cairo Xtreme.

Both the cross country and showjumping phases saw the standings shaken across the weekend in the CCI3*-S as the riders tested their skills against a field of 23 combinations.

The Horseland CCI3*-L class was led from the very start by Olympian Wendy Schaeffer-Macdonald, riding Sun Quest.

The combination threw down the gauntlet in the dressage phase and never relinquished their lead.

Melody Belle set to shine at national sale Champion racehorse Melody Belle will become the most decorated racemare to be offered at public auction when the 14 time Group One winner goes under the hammer at the Gold Coast Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in May. The Gold Coast-based auction has been announced as the selling venue for the superstar New Zealand galloper.

Fortuna Director John Galvin said he would have mixed emotions when she is offered at auction on Day One of the National Broodmare Sale, May 25.

"The decision was made some time ago that 2021 would be her last racing season and our immediate focus has been on her racing campaign," Galvin said.

"Recently the decision had to be made how and where we would sell her and we have decided the Gold Coast was the best option.

"Melody Belle has been an absolute life changer for her connections. My wife Jessica has a share and is one of 34 individual owners who are spread right across New Zealand as well as one in Melbourne."

Right from the start of her career, Melody Belle showed she was a star.

She won the Karaka Million at her fourth start and then captured the first of her 14 Group Ones in the Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes.

"One of the real keys to her success is her soundness," Galvin said.

"She's never had an issue physically and that has seen her continue racing at the highest level as a two, three, four, five and now sixyear-old.

“She's won over every trip and on every type of track."

Last Saturday week Melody Belle became the most successful Group One racehorse in New Zealand racing history when she won the Bonecrusher Stakes at Ellerslie.

"We are so proud of this achievement and it's been rightly acknowledged."

Melody Belle is due to race next in the Group One Tancred Stakes at Randwick on April 3 while she holds entries in both the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Coolmore Legacy Stakes.

The final two runs for Melody Belle before the National Sale could be the Group Two Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast over 1800 metres which Galvin points out is the perfect lead in for the Group One Doomben

"Melody Belle's first season in training came just as Jamie had been appointed co-trainer at Te Akau and he's been there the whole way through,” he said.

“While there's been many more since, I know she holds a special place with Jamie as she was his first top line horse.

"For her ownership group and for Fortuna it's been an incredible ride. We have just syndicated our 111th yearling and she was number 62.

"Many of Melody Belle's New Zealand owners are based in smaller towns and hamlets and all of the owners have become well known in the community and she has really become the people's horse. She has such a huge following with so many people knowing and supporting those who have a share in New Zealand's champion."

in the catalogue adds a further highlight to what is shaping to be a spectacular catalogue for the 2021 Gold Coast National Sale.

Survey seeks to better understand Cushing’s

By THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE Researchers at The University of Melbourne are undertaking a survey of horse owners to better understand their management of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) also known as Equine Cushing’s disease.

PPID is a common condition in older horses and ponies and is linked to a range of problems including laminitis (a foot problem causing severe lameness), weight loss and a long curly hair coat, plus various other signs.

The survey forms part of a broader, major international project to improve the understanding and knowledge of the fundamental causes of the condition, in order to improve early diagnosis, treatment, husbandry and nutritional management.

The short online survey is designed for horse owners, to better understand how they manage horses or ponies with PPID, and what the important factors are for them including the ability to feed separately and cost of medications.

Cushings & EMS the herbal solution

By VICTORIA FERGUSON Increasingly horses and ponies are being diagnosed with Cushings Disease or Equine Metabolic Syndrome.

They are different disorders. Pictured right is my Holsteiner gelding Fabio, showing the cresty neck and fat lumps each side of the tail, consistent with EMS, but blood tests showed that he did not have EMS, and he never had laminitis in his 17 years of life with me until he went to that big pasture in the sky. More on him later in this article.

Cushings Disease According to Kentucky Equine, Cushings is caused by an enlargement in the pars intermedia of the pituitary gland. This condition leads to oversecretion of cortisol by the adrenal gland. Affected horses may show signs such as increased thirst and urination, loss of muscle mass, an increased susceptibility to infection and a long hair coat that doesn't shed normally.

Laminitis is a common symptom as are hoof abscesses but that is usually in the later stages.

EQUINE METABOLIC SYNDROME According to Kentucky Equine, most horses affected with equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) are overweight and have abnormal fat deposits that include a cresty neck, fat around the tailhead that makes the tail look inset into the body, and fat pads around the shoulder, sheath, or udder. Horses with EMS gain or maintain weight with little feed. I add to that they invariably have exceptionally greedy appetites and have a chew rate about double that of a horse with a normal appetite.

Laminitis is a common symptom especially associated with lush pasture growth in late spring and early summer.

Diagnosis Kentucky Equine says first rule out Cushings using the ACTH test, then test insulin and glucose levels. ACTH stands for Adrenocorticotropic Hormone which is elevated in horses with Cushings.

They state that the ACTH test is not accurate for every horse so must assess physical symptoms as well. Seems like a no brainer to me - in the old days vets always used their eyes, hands and brains and often did not resort to tests. These days it seems to be round the other way.

Glucose is elevated in suspected cases of EMS and sometimes in cases of Cushing's disease.

Insulin - this hormone is elevated in cases of EMS. Fabio's glucose serum was very low, insulin within normal range, triglycerides also normal, so technically he didn't have EMS, but actually he did. ACTH levels were not tested as he had no symptoms of Cushings.

HERBAL TREATMENT FOR EMS & CUSHINGS I treated Fabio with a prescription of liquid herbal extracts to re-balance his endocrine system, also bitter liver herbs to help reduce his abberant appetite.

This works extremely well to reduce fat deposits and balance appetite, which reduces the risk of laminitis.

These days horses are often diagnosed with Cushings on the basis of a single blood test - either insulin or glucose levels, often without any consideration of the physical characteristics of the horse concerned, when the first test should be ACTH. This test is often offered free - a marketing hook to immediately put the horse on the common vet drug for this condition, which has a very narrow sphere of influence - only stimulating dopamine production.

I have been successfully treating horses and ponies with Cushings disease for many years.

The function of the pituitary gland is specifically targeted with adaptogenic herbs and most importantly the specific symptoms being experienced by the individual, are treated with appropriate herbs.

Recently one of my clients started herbal treatment with their gelding who had sudden onset Cushings and who was diagnosed by the vet and placed on the drug.

Unfortunately he had a bad reaction to it, becoming very lethargic, losing muscle

mass and lame in one leg.

After 10 days on the herbal treatment, he had regained his appetite and energy and wasn't lame.

Even I got pretty excited about that response, but it is a condition which does require ongoing treatment, as it can only be managed and not cured.

Feeding for strong healthy hooves

By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic Farriers often recommend hoof supplements when they think your horse might be lacking the nutrients needed to grow good strong hoof wall.

If you are already feeding a well-balanced diet, doubling up on nutrients with a hoof supplement is unlikely to help and could make things worse.

Factors most likely to contribute to poor hooves are mineral deficiency or imbalance, insufficient dietary omega-3s, very wet or dry environmental conditions, genetics and lack of timely, quality farrier care.

If your horse's diet doesn't provide enough of the right nutrients then you do need to use a supplement to correct deficiencies and imbalances. A well formulated multi-vitamin and mineral supplement designed to balance the entire intake is the best option to help grow healthy hooves.

Biotin is a B-group vitamin that is often added to the diet to improve hoof growth. Biotin is naturally sourced in forage and grains, with fresh grass one of the richest sources of biotin.

Horses also obtain biotin from microbial production in a healthy gut.

Although horses are rarely biotin deficient, research demonstrates that adding 15 to 40 mg of biotin per day can improve hoof growth rate and quality, especially for horses under stress, on antibiotics, suffering from laminitis or those without access to fresh green pasture.

Before buying biotin, check to see how much is already included in any complete feeds and supplements being used.

The added bonus of feeding correctly is that not only will hooves flourish, the diet also provides everything needed to keep all other systems in the body health as well, including the immune, musculo-skeletal, nervous, respiratory and circulatory systems.

If your horse's feet aren't as healthy as they should be, start by checking the whole diet for correct balance rather than reaching for the band-aid solution of a hoof-food supplement.

And remember that it takes around nine months for the hoof wall to grow from the coronet band to the weight-bearing surface so taking care of hoof health requires a long-term commitment.

It is easy to see the impact of previous changes in nutrition or health status by looking at the 'growth rings' that occur in the hoof wall.

HOW DO YOU FEED FOR HOOF HEALTH? Hooves, hair and skin are made from a very strong protein called keratin which comes in hard or soft forms depending on the

minerals and amino acids it contains. Keratin production requires the horse to have eaten enough of the right amino acids and to have absorbed adequate vitamins, minerals and fatty acids along with the energy (calories) required to convert these raw ingredients into the proteins that make hooves healthy and strong.

All horses need roughage for gut health, which also provides most of the protein and energy they need to survive.

Equine diets need minerals added to top up the levels provided by forage to at least daily required minimum levels as well as to balance critical mineral ratios.

The most commonly deficient minerals are copper, zinc, iodine and selenium all of which are critical for strong hoof formation.

Some horses need more energy (calories) added to the diet to sustain work loads, growth or maintenance.

Some horses need extra protein added, especially for growing horses or those on very poorquality roughage such as straw

or very mature tropical grass hays.

Some diets also need supplementation with specific essential amino acids such as lysine, methionine and threonine.

Of these amino acids, methionine is most important for hoof development.

Horses also need small amounts of oils with balanced levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for health skin and hooves.

QUALITY PROTEIN The diet must supply enough proteins with a good balance of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. For adult horses, the total level of protein necessary is easily provided even by average quality roughage, but it is important to check that the levels of the most commonly limiting amino acids (lysine, threonine and methionine) are adequate.

Full fat soybean meal and lucerne contain these frequently limiting amino acids so adding these feeds is often the easiest way to supplement them where required.

Zinc, copper, sulphur and selenium are microminerals or trace elements necessary for healthy skin, hair and hooves.

Scientific research has shown that the horn from hooves containing lower zinc concentrations are not as hard and strong as those with higher levels of zinc.

Zinc is used in more than 100 enzymes in the body responsible for a large number of cell functions including energy metabolism, cell division and keratinization (the growth of hair and hooves).

Copper forms an important part of numerous enzymes in the body, including some responsible for connective tissue formation, pigmentation of coat colour, cell respiration and antioxidant functions.

Selenium also plays a role in keratin synthesis for hoof and hair production.

The concentration of sulphur in keratin is higher than in any other tissue in the body due to the levels of sulphur-rich amino acids such as methionine.

Having the correct levels of copper and zinc and the correct ratios between them are necessary to allow the body to make healthy hooves.

The levels of copper and zinc also need to be balanced in relation to iron and manganese.

Since grass and hay are high in iron, if you add any more iron to the diet it becomes much harder to balance the copper and zinc levels so choose a mineral supplement with no added iron.

Selenium levels must also be carefully balanced between the relatively narrow margins of required daily minimum amounts and below toxic levels.

Sulphur deficiency rarely occurs when horses are fed an adequate daily intake of average quality that meets their daily protein requirements.

VITAMINS The B-group vitamins B7 (biotin) and B6 (pyridoxine) work together to produce keratin which is important for hoof and hair health.

Horses at pasture and leading a life free from stress, illness or hard work will generally produce enough B-group vitamins

Hard-working, stressed or ill horses may need supplemental vitamin B to meet needs.

Biotin supplementation at levels of 15 - 20 mg/day for a 500 kg horse has been demonstrated to improve hoof hardness when compared to diets low in biotin.

In one study, diets with very high levels of biotin supplementation (up to 60 mg/day for a 500 kg horse) increased growth rate by 15% (Reilly et al 1998).

But biotin alone doesn't appear to be enough - when horses don't get enough calcium or

zinc, supplemental biotin doesn't harden hooves.

OILS Adding omega-3 fatty acids also improve the integrity of the periople (a protective layer around hoof walls) for horses lacking access to green grass.

Grass contains about four times the amount of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids than omega6. Dried grass (hay and chaff), grains and most other vegetable oils (including canola and sunflower seeds or oil) are much higher in pro-inflammatory omega-6 compared to omega-3.

Therefore a horse eating lots of hay or hard feed needs more omega-3 added to the diet to increase the omega 3 to 6 ratio to a level similar to grass.

Choose an omega-3 supplement which has omega-3 levels four to 10 times higher than omega-6 to efficiently correct an inverted fatty acid balance.

Vitamin E acts in the body as an antioxidant to protect these fragile fats, so supplementation with extra vitamin E, especially for horses in hard work or who have been stressed or ill, is advised.

WHAT COAT AND HOOF GROWTH RESULTS CAN YOU EXPECT TO SEE FROM A BALANCED DIET? There are many benefits to feeding a correctly balanced diet, but one of the first advantages you will notice is a deepening of coat colour intensity.

Over time, a well-balanced diet will also lead to growth of the best mane, tail and hoof that your horse is genetically programmed to produce.

As an owner you will still need to manage the many other environmental factors that impact on hooves to get the best out of the nutrition you provide.

These factors include correct and regular farriery to promote healthy hooves and eliminate cracks, splits and damage as well as providing appropriate surfaces during weather extremes to manage hoof moisture and avoid disease.

As a bonus, many horses fed correctly balanced diets also become more metabolically efficient at using energy, meaning you can save money on the amount and type of hard feeds your horse requires.

The importance of daily equine hoof care It is important to take good care of your horse’s feet.

Regularly pick out your horse's feet, remove any stones or small objects lodged in his feet remove manure, and check for signs of thrush.

You want to be able to see the sole's entire surface, so finish the job with a stiff brush.

Establish what's normal.

While handling your horse's feet to pick them out, notice their temperature; when everything's OK, they'll feel very slightly warm.

Locate the digital pulse with two fingers pressed against the back of his pastern; you're interested not in the rate of the pulse but in its strength under normal conditions.

Check the frog, which has about the texture and firmness of a new rubber eraser when it's healthy. Don't be alarmed, though, if everything else looks OK but the frog appears to be peeling off--most horses shed the frog at least twice a year, sometimes more often.

Thrush: The first clue to this bacterial condition (usually caused by prolonged standing in manure, mud, or other wet, filthy conditions, or even by prolonged use of pads) is a foul smell and dark ooze from the cleft of the frog.

Later, the frog becomes cheesy in texture.

Although thrush can eventually cause lameness and significant hoof damage, its early stage is simple to treat. Use an over-the-counter remedy recommended by your farrier or veterinarian. Follow directions on the label and make sure your horse's stall is clean and dry.

will probably be invisible by the time you pick his feet and you'll be unaware of it until it causes an abscess. But in some cases the object remains in place, to be discovered when you brush the last bits of dirt from the sole.

Don’t' pull it out!

Call your veterinarian for advice as it may need an X-ray to show how far the object has penetrated and which structures are involved.

Cracks. Some cracks are superficial; others can worsen, involving sensitive hoof structures.

If you notice a crack in your horse's hoof, talk to your farrier and describe its location and size so he can decide whether it needs attention.

Abscess: If your horse's digital pulse feels stronger than usual and/or is foot is warmer than normal to the touch, the cause could be an abscess inside the hoof, a bruise, or an overlooked sole puncture.

Laminitis: If you find increased heat and a stronger-than-usual digital pulse in both front feet and if he's shifting uncomfortably from

foot to foot this could be laminitis, an inflammatory condition that can cause severe hoof damage if not treated promptly.

Schedule regular farrier visits, six to eight weeks is the average.

If your farrier is correcting for a problem such as under-run heels, a club foot, or flare in the hoof wall, your horse may benefit from a shorter interval.

If your horse is shod, check his shoes each time you pick out his feet.

Ensure there are no nails sticking out, he could injure himself and check the shoe has not sprung or loosened.

Some horses naturally have better hooves than others. Fine-tune his diet if your horses have any hoof problems add a hoof supplement that targets the problem he is having.

Greasy Heel, Rain Scald and Mud fever are in fact, different presentations of the same disease and are directly related to persistent wet conditions.

The organism that causes the above three conditions is known as Dermatophilus.

This is a type of bacteria that requires a particular environment to grow and survive.

Primarily the requirement is protection from the oxygen and light in the environment.

The bug needs to be able to hide somewhere and if the conditions are right, the germ establishes itself, forms colonies and invades local tissues, in this case, the skin, and causes disease.

Greasy Heel affects the lower limbs, most commonly the back of the pastern and Mud Fever the front of the cannon bones.

The different areas have some slightly different characteristics that predispose them to infections. The top-line usually is not a problem in well-conditioned healthy horses.

These have nice oily skin and a very rounded elastic skin contour that water easily runs off.

Horses that are debilitated have drier skin and little pockets that can hold moisture and not dry out so quickly. Their hair coat also tends to be a little longer.

The pasterns, in particular the heels, often have longer hair and a number of grooves and contours that hold water.

The front of the cannons obviously shed water easily but the skin is relatively thin and taut in this area.

The major culprit that then contributes to development of disease is mud.

Obviously the heels are usually covered, and often submerged, in mud.

The cannon almost always have mud spattered all over them and the top-line can have mud under different conditions.

The mud stuck to the wet skin provides a five star environment for the Dermatophilus organism to invade.

The organism is ubiquitous, that means it is a normal environmental organism that lives everywhere.

It is not contagious as such, it simply is everywhere and is on the lookout for somewhere to colonise.

The bacteria invade the moist irritated skin and provoke an even greater inflammatory reaction this causes serum to exude and enables the formation of a

The recent rains and prospects of another couple of months of the same, poses many problems for the health of the horse.

In particular, we see an increase in the incidences of laminitis, colic, and skin disease.

Skin diseases are very common and a large number of horses are affected.

The big three problems, Rain Scald, Greasy Heel and Mud Fever, are in fact, different presentations of the same disease.

All are directly related to persistent wet conditions and can be difficult to prevent.

As always, an understanding of how they occur is fundamental in being able to introduce management practices to protect your horse.

Obviously the simplest practice is to keep your horse dry.

Easy enough if stabling facilities are available however this won’t apply to the majority of horses.

There is nothing wrong with washing your horse as long as he is able to dry off quickly and the skin returns to normal.

The problems occur when the skin remains wet for prolonged periods.

The skin infection can spread very quickly and the typical presentations occur Theoretically, treatment is simple. Expose the organism to virtually any antibiotic or antiseptic agent and it is quickly killed.

It is not resistant to drugs.

The difficulty is getting the drugs to contact the organism.

Obviously if the bug is hiding under the cove of mud or scab, and the drugs are applied to the surface, they do not come in contact.

Similarly injectable or systemic drugs are carried in the blood but there is no blood supply to the nooks and crannies where the germ is hiding.

The key to treatment is to get rid of the cover. All mud should be washed off the horse’s legs and body at least twice daily and most importantly, the skin dried with a towel. Any longer hair should be clipped or removed.

Scabs are a lot more difficult.

They often are quite painful, and there obviously already is infection present and so the horse resents attempts to remove the scab.

This is critical however and measures must be taken to remove the scab.

This may require sedation.

Bandaging the area with a surgical soap or oil, or lanolin based ointment to soften the scab to aid removal can be very helpful.

Once the scab is removed, the organism can be easily killed.

Sometimes there is acute inflammation and irritation to the skin and a topical corticosteroid ointment can help.

A particular problem for rain scald can be horses with rugs that are out in the paddock in rain. continued page 15

Prompt treatment is essential for success from page 14 The rug gets wet, the weather is hot and humid, soaks the skin, causes irritation and the germ prevails.

It is better to leave the horse un-rugged than have a persistently wet rug predisposing to disease.

Greasy Heel often poses a particular extra problem which can make it one of the most difficult diseases of all to treat.

The Dermatophilus organism can cause an allergic type reaction in some horses. The correct term is an immune mediated disease.

In this situation the body mounts an antibody reaction to the presence of the germ which causes a vasculitis.

This means inflammation of the capillaries and blood vessels. The vessels break down and serum leaks into the tissues and the lower legs swell.

In particular, the reaction makes the skin extra sensitive to ultra violet light. The condition is far more common and much worse in chestnut and light coloured horses and breeds that have a finer or more sensitive skin. Once the reaction has been set up, it will persist even after the organism has been killed because of the continual reaction to light and the vasculitis in the blood vessels.

These horses often require a course of systemic cortisone to control the intense inflammatory reaction occurring in the tissues.

Once the problem is established, our approach at Redlands is to control the inflammation, remove hair, scab, and mud and apply medications.

We commonly use a surgical type shampoo that is either iodine or chlorhexidine based to thoroughly clean the area and remove debris, and apply topical medications according to the presentation.

We also see a marked increase in laminitis and hoof infections during wet weather.

The laminitis can certainly be due to the green grass and increased load of available sugar, the so called "Equine Metabolic Syndrome", which is a subject in itself, but often is just an environmentally induced inflammation of the laminae caused by continual exposure to wet conditions.

This is not usually as potentially devastating as the true toxin induced founders however the mechanical manifestations can be the same and treatment is urgent and essential.

Hoof infections occur most commonly in unshod horses and any area of overgrowth, cracks, or chipping allow moisture and mud to infiltrate and set up inflammation and lameness.

Bare footed horses should have their feet regularly attended to by a farrier on a four to five week basis to ensure no weaknesses develop.

Colic occurs commonly with any change in the weather. In periods of continual rain, all animals tend to be miserable and stand around "moping".

As a result, they do not graze and eat as regularly as they would normally do and it is the disruption to the normal routine which creates gut disturbances and can lead to colic.

Thrush is a very common bacterial infection that occurs in the hoof, specifically in the region around the frog.

The bacterium involved is Fusobacterium necrophorum, and occurs naturally in the environment in wet, muddy, or unsanitary conditions, such as an unclean stall - and grows best with low oxygen.

Symptoms The most obvious sign of thrush is usually the odor that occurs when picking out the feet. Additionally, the infected areas of the hoof will be black in color and will easily break or crumble when scraped with a hoof pick. Most horses do not become lame if infected with thrush. However, if left untreated, the bacteria may migrate deeper into the sensitive parts of the hoof and result in lameness.

Treatment and prevention Treatment for horses with thrush includes twice-daily picking of the feet and cleaning out the two collateral grooves and the central sulcus, scrubbing clean using a detergent or disinfectant and warm water, and coated with a commercial thrushtreatment product or iodine For best results kept hooves dry and in a clean environment.

Understanding dietary needs avoids problems

The reason for this is that it can compromise the gut bacteria population.

If these bacteria start dying off, there is an increased risk of colic and the horse would not be receiving the correct nutritional intake.

We already know that the horse's gastrointestinal tract must be treated with great respect.

For those of you who have experienced a horse with colic, you will know that it is a very distressing time for both the horse and the horse owner.

So preventative measures are always the best option, in the management of your horse's health.

There are other triggers that can create digestive upsets in horses.

This can include feeding a horse a high carbohydrate diet that is lacking in roughage.

For example, feeding a horse a high grain diet, as is often the case with stabled horses and insufficient roughage might mean that the small intestine may not be able to process the feed efficiently prior to it reaching the hindgut.

The possible result could be that when carbohydrates reach the fermentation process in the caecum that there could be a lactic acid build up. A lactic acid build up can influence hindgut pH level this can make it difficult for bacteria to survive.

Let's just clarify the terms wet/soaked verses damp/dry!

I have always recommended feeding a damp, bordering on dry feed if you are including powdered supplements.

There are however feeds that can be fed dry these include feeds which are steamed and compressed long stem fibre pellets.

The digestive process starts in the mouth.

As the food passes through the system it is broken down into a form which can be absorbed and utilised by the body.

The horse's sensitive lips with their attendant whiskers are very well adapted to locate, assess and handle the feed he wishes to eat.

The sensitivity, mobility, and power of the lips are extraordinary. The front teeth, together with the lips and tongue, are used to get hold of the food and bring it into the mouth for grinding by the molars or back teeth.

The horse's powerful teeth reflect the coarse grasses he has evolved to eat, which require considerable mastication to break down the tough siliceous fibres.

Feeding a wet feed simply does not encourage normal chewing and grinding of feed, in fact it reduces the desire to do so, this is not normal for a horse.

Granted, if you own an old horse with poor teeth there is an advantage to feeding a damp feed but it also needs to be the right type of feed.

Feeding a wet feed can increase the risk of digestive conditions such as diarrhoea, ulcers and colic.

During this process, there can be a release of endotoxins which can be very harmful for the horse.

This can create a hostile environment and will put the horse at risk for colic or laminitis. Feeding small feeds often with plenty of roughage may well be a solution to this type of problem.

I am often asked this question, “what do I really need to feed my horse?”

Well it's simple, it's not rocket science it's just common sense.

We need to remind ourselves that horses have evolved to eat only one way and that the anatomy and physiology has not changed.

What has changed is man's intervention producing different types of feeds that in many cases are not suitable to feed to our horses.

There is a use of by-products in feeds because they are easy to access and can bulk up a feed.

However, these types of by-products are simply not suitable to feed to horses.

Some will not encourage that normal chewing and grinding process at the point of the mouth.

Feeding a feed that is too wet will discourage this process and hence create a lot of the problems.

Horses are very simple to feed - the most important rule to remember that they should consume around 1.5 to 3% of their own body weight in feed each day.

At least half of this but preferably a lot more than half should be roughage.

I always expanding my knowledge in nutrition and genetics and the way nutrition influences gene expression.

Genetics only have a small bearing on disease states in humans and animals, the major influences are the environment, in which the horse lives, toxicity, water quality, quality of

So, what does your horse need?

Your horse requires a well-balanced ration, one that you can alter and adjust when required and one that contains high-quality roughage, possibly some grains depending on the horse's workload, fresh clean water, good quality pasture and good quality hay when the pasture is poor. This is when round bales can be very beneficial.

I love alfalfa because it is low in NSC and starch, it is also highly nutritious and value for money.

Best of all horses love it. Remember the key to a healthy horse is a good level of roughage this will maintain a healthy digestive system in the long-term.

Does your horse require grain?

Well if he was a paleo horse, he would not be allowed grain.

But all jokes aside grain is necessary in many cases to provide a good level of carbohydrate that otherwise may not be achieved by simply feeding roughage.

Many products require soaking, and many tend to expand

However, many horses do very well on a simple roughage-based diet.

I always recommend using a natural daily supplement but one that has science behind it and purchase from a company that has a transparency about the information provided to customers.

Many horses require a high level of carbohydrates to perform the work expected of them.

Horses working four to five hours a week for example will possibly need extra grain in their diet.

My most favourite grain is always oats because you can feed them whole, they are low in starch and they are the lowest in protein of all the grains.

Oats are very readily digested and utilised by the horse. Feeding steamed and rolled barley is another option but I don't feel you require any other grains apart from these two.

Let's face it they are tried and tested and have been used for centuries, they're safe and easy to feed.

Normal vital signs for adult horses (at rest): * Heart rate 38-44 beats per minute * Rectal temperature 37-38.5ºC * Respiratory (breathing) rate 12-20 breaths per minute * Gums should be light pink and moist, and capillary refill time less than two seconds * Sounds of the intestines should be heard on both sides of the abdomen * 6-10 manures and 3-4 urinations should be passed every 24 hours * A 500kg thoroughbred-sized horse drinks 20-25 litres every 24 hours How to find your horse’s vital signs: So you can pick up when something may be wrong, learn your horse’s normal vital signs when at rest, and after exercise.

Heart Rate (HR): Place the flat side of the stethoscope head behind your horse’s

Healthy Gums should be light pink and moist left elbow, in front of where your girth would sit. Count each “lubdub” sound as one beat.

Normal resting heart rate: 38-44 beats/minute Temperature: Stand safely to the side of your horse’s rump. Gently but firmly hold the tail at the base, and lift it to one side. Insert the thermometer into the anus, holding it firmly flat against the wall of the rectum.

When the thermometer indicates it has finished reading, remove it and record the reading.

Normal resting respiratory rate: 12-20 breaths/minute Oral Mucous Membranes: Lift your horse’s lips to show the gums – what colour are they?

If they are any shade of purple, blue or red, call your vet. Press your finger firmly against the gum, then release. You will notice under the pressure of your finger, the gum is almost white when you remove your finger, but then the colour returns. Watch to see how long the gum colour takes to return to normal.

This is known as the capillary refill time (CRT).

Normal gums: Light pink colour, and moist to touch Capillary refill time: Less than two seconds Abdominal Sounds: Listen with the stethoscope on each side of your horse’s abdomen, above and below the flank area. The sounds you hear will vary, and can be described as gurgling, rumbling, tinkling, gaseous etc. Sounds also vary in frequency and loudness, depending on which area you listen to. You should always be able to hear sounds in all quarters if using a stethoscope, however with the naked ear they may be difficult or unable to be heard.

Horses overwhelmed away from home

By TANJA KRAUS Something that I see a lot of is horses that are overwhelmed in 'away from home' situations.

I hear often from owners and riders "he's perfect at home" or "he never does this at home" and I know it to be true - because of the layering pressure effect.

'Away from home' is a complex issue for a horse and may not be as straightforward as we think.

Away from home means; A new environment- sights, smells, noises.

Often more pressure from an away from home owner - more expectations for the task at hand, any nerves that the owner is experiencing, and distractions.

It's being away from the herd and the security that it offers.

On top of all of these extra inputs that we are asking the horse to process, we often also ask him to perform at the same level as when he is at home, and fail to take into account that with each external stimulus, comes a reduction in processing ability - until such a time as our horses are familiar with the different layers.

Adopting a singular focus approach to layering pressure provides us, and the horse the capacity to remain in a learning

state, and thus our outings can become successful training opportunities instead of failures.

Most reading this can drive, and I imagine from time to time many of you layer pressures when driving - the stereo might be on, we might be navigating, talking to a friend and even taking a sip of water from time to time.

Expose that same experienced driver to a higher pressure - a storm, driving rain, snow, busy city traffic or towing a trailer

with precious cargo, and we start to strip back layers so we can concentrate - it's the same for your horse, when he is concentrating on unfamiliar external input, he may be unresponsive to cues we thought were solid.

In this range of pictures you will see I have boogie working on a bag, and in some pictures she is focusing on me, and others she is on the bag - eventually I want her to be able to split that focus so she can perform at a higher level.

By SUE SPENCE When I started Horses Helping Humans (HHH) 16 years ago, I had no idea it would become an award-winning program and earn the reputation it has of being an outcome based Equine Intervention so popular with family and youth services and for my story to be published by Pan Macmillan.

We have now had 1000s of students through the program with proven outcomes of helping change lives for the better.

It was these outcomes, which led me to license HHH so the program would help those in other communities.

Becoming a licensee means you actually become part of your local community as only one license is granted per area. eg ( HHH Gold Coast, HHH Sunshine Coast etc ) Helping you become a respected youth and family service within your government boundary lines assures the quality and outcomes delivered at a professional level are the same in every area.

This assures that case workers and counsellors in all areas can confidently refer to HHH for communications intervention and assist them with opening the doors of communication with their challenging clients.

This helps them immensely when applying for their own funding, as HHH is a known program for helping with re-

engagement back into school or study.

Youth and family services, school chaplains or counsellors, mental health organisations, child protection, homeless youth, DV services and the Justice Dept refer the students we work with.

The training covers extensive communication and body language techniques as well as requiring horsemanship ground skills to be of a high level.

(The program is based on professional horsemanship, self-regulation and life skills which translate straight into everyday life situations.)

The License includes full business set up, extensive hands-on individual training with me at HHH on the Gold Coast as well as me working with Licensees at their property with their horses.

It also includes, me speaking at Licensees’ local Youth and Family interagency meetings to discuss outcomes and the referral system, I contact local council, MPs and training colleges, my attendance at the opening as I organise a media launch and offer ongoing support.

Everything from invoice templates and advertising, referral forms, training manuals, videos, workbooks for youth workers, horsemanship, media releases upon opening, follow up and our annual conference is included.

It is the most rewarding career and it is a blessing to be able to help so many make positive changes in their lives.

Equitana TWOTH - The Way of The Horse The Way Of The Horse (TWOTH) was created in 2005

by EQUITANA Australia to demonstrate a kinder and more caring way to start a young horse and to showcase the impressive training skills of our home-grown horsemen and women.

The competitors chosen for the Challenge each year are picked specifically because they represent the same kind and caring ethos.

This year TWOTH is a state vs state battle with competitors representing three different states.

This electrifying horsemanship contest will have you excited to come back each day to keep tabs on the progress of each trainer and their horse.

During the challenge, three of EQUITANA’s leading horse trainers demonstrate their highly personal and specialised methods of connecting with an unbroken horse.

After choosing their young, unstarted horse from a selection trucked directly from the paddock to the venue, the three trainers work simultaneously in separate round pens, giving the public a unique opportunity to compare starting methods and training styles.

Contestants are judged by a respected panel of equestrians, who award individual points for techniques used to determine the winner.

Ashlea Waddell when she went to return to riding and working with horses her carefree thoughts had gone and she became quite nervous with the “what if’ thoughts and did not have any answers with her training so she became lost.

This then turned her to a liberty clinic where she met her mentor and now dear friend Sandi Simons.

Sandi took Ashlea through the

most amazing journey of her trainers’ program where they spent many years (still to this day) training together, they went through everything with her horse Isabella who was a brilliant teacher, this training is what had Ashlea change from a nervous young new mum with no answers on how to overcome her nerves or training goals to starting her own equine business ‘Partnership with Purpose’ in 2015.

Ashlea’s business started with a few private lessons a week sharing some confidence training with women, some mild re-education behavioural horses, starting the occasional horse under saddle and a few group sessions on a low level under the guidance of her trainer Sandi.

She continued her training with Sandi and David Simons over the years and her business grew as her knowledge with horses did.

Several years later Ashlea is now 33 and living in Harvey, Western Australia with her partner and

horseman Rhys Morrissey and son Jaxon.

Ashlea takes on horses for private training ranging from young horse starting, behavioural training, general riding, unhandled horses, float training and groundwork.

Ashlea also continues to travel all over Western Australia teaching two days clinics and private lessons on a larger scale than ever while now competing her three horses in Working equitation on her Andalusian, Alvaro and Campdrafting on her two quarter horses, Chase and Rocky with her family.

MATT BLEBY from SA Matt grew up around horses. By the time he was eight-years-old he was always the kid who was asked to ride or handle the difficult ponies that were too small for an adult rider.

Even at that young age it was apparent that he had a way of helping horses understand what was being asked of them. continued page 23

2021 COMPETITORS ARE: ASHLEA WADDELL from WA Growing up in Perth, Western Australia Ashlea’s love for horses all started from a young age, her mother Tracey had a gelding called Rebate and she would spend many hours with her mum and him playing around.

Ashlea got her very on horse at 12, a paint called Tinkerbell who took her all through her teens doing pony club, beach and trail rides, she was such a great first horse who taught Ashlea to ride confidently.

When Ashlea was 21 she bought a young Clydesdale mare Isabella who really was where it all began with Ashlea’s horse training journey.

She started Isabella under saddle and thoroughly enjoyed some liberty training she had picked up along the way while she spent some time with different trainers in WA. At 24 Ashlea had 12 months off from horses while becoming a new mum to her son Jaxon, but Page 22

From these early experiences he developed a love of working with young horses and went on to explore and learn with the Snowy River and High Country Horsemen in his teenage years.

There, as he worked for room and board, he learned many aspects of starting young ones, running trail rides and mustering in the hard mountain country, and developed a strong work ethic.

These years gave Matt a solid foundation as he constantly searched for ways to create more understanding between horse and human.

After finishing school, Matt achieved his Certificate in horse industries and worked with leading farriers to become a well-rounded horseman.

As Matt reached adulthood he was searching for true excellence with horses.

He travelled throughout Australia on stations and overseas, working with some of the best horseman in the world.

Following the teachings of Tom and Bill Dorrance, made famous in recent years by the likes of Ray Hunt, Pat Parelli, Buck Brannaman and Leslie Desmond to name a few.

Matt studied with everyone he could get involved with and quickly built rapport with his peers and gained the respect of his mentors.

Matt accepted a position with Rubiton Bloodstock in the Adelaide Hills, which would become one of the most successful boutique breeders in the thoroughbred industry.

Matt brought a new way of horsemanship to Rubiton

Bloodstock and quickly became known for his ability to handle all horses from foals and colt starting, through to problem horses.

As foreman, Matt’s role was varied and he spent 10 years with the company.

In that time he started up to 60 horses a year and prepared yearlings for Melbourne and Sydney, winning best presented Melbourne Premier.

This time working stud-side in the racing industry was invaluable experience.

Because of the sheer volume of young horses, this is exposure which cannot be gained anywhere else.

During Matt’s time at Rubiton Bloodstock he built a steady horsemanship business on the side to express his passion for teaching and deep desire for horses to be understood.

It was here that his natural feel and abilities with not only horses but people too, paved the way for the creation of Orange Oak Horsemanship with his wife Lauren, who became an essential

part of this growing business.

Matt now teaches throughout South Australia running clinics and lessons and still enjoys starting colts around Australia with his great friend and mentor; Ken Faulkener.

Matt is able to utilise his talent and experience both with horses and with people to co-facilitate equine assisted leadership seminars for corporate executives.

Many clients of Orange Oak Horsemanship are drawn to Matt due to his fair, firm but kind and gentle manner, strong in his clear belief that horses are nearly always happy to do what is asked of them: they just want to understand what is being asked of them.

His guiding intervention philosophy is: “As much as necessary, as little as possible”.

EMMA O'SHEA From NSW Emma is a 33 year old mother of two from Far North Queensland.

She started her working career contract mustering in the north.

She met her partner Morgan Webb, at a campdraft and rodeo and then moved to NSW. Emma breaks and trains horses from Tumut and continues to muster in the north over winter.

They now own property in Cootamundra NSW where she has a breaking and training facility as well.

They still travel to Queensland each year to do the northern run of drafts and challenges.

Time to bring in that pony and transform him into your star… but not sure where you start?

Every pony is different and every person has their own way of doing things, but we try to follow the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principal.

We break it down into 6 categories which we will go through in the next 5 issues in coming months.

MAINTENANCE This is important, the basics when owning any horse and addressing your duty of care. These principals are a must before you start your show preparation and be done on a regular basis.

No amount of money or work will transform your pony if you don’t practice the basics of pony/horse care.

WORMING Your horse needs to be on a regular worming program appropriate to its age and environment. Young-stock are particularly susceptible to worm burdens so if your unsure your local vet can help you. It’s also a good

idea to rotate using different brands or wormer. It’s been proven over time the worms can become resistant to the same wormer.

HOOF CARE As the old saying goes, no hoof, no horse. It is critical to ensure your horses hooves are maintained regularly. ,QFRUUHFW KRRI FDUH FDQ DIIHFW PRYHPHQW FRQ¿UPDWLRQ and soundness.

EQUINE DENTISTY A horses teeth continue to grow throughout it’s lifetime.

To maintain optimal food absorption and to ensure comfort during its work your horse needs to be seen by D YHW RU TXDOL¿HG HTXLQH GHQWLVW RQ D UHJXODU EDVHV HANDLING This might sound silly but your pony must have basic handling. You should be able to catch it, lead it, brush it all over and handle it safely.

Every time you interact with your pony you are in fact teaching it.

It’s good to practice and teach your horse to stand still and tie up quietly for periods of time. This is important when it comes time for clipping and show prepping your horse as we will discuss in more detail in a later issue.

Last but not least. It is important to spend this initial time with your equine building a relationship and trust, a true partnership. Just remember, horses are masters of body language not the English language. What you put in is what you will get back.

Technyflex equine news from sponsored riders Supplied by TECHNYFLEX Kim Harvey, mother of para equestrian, Nathan, reports from the State Special Olympics national qualifier, recently held at the Cartmill Centre, Burpengary: "Nathan and the five-year-old Gwarryen Adela, did us proud as a substitute for his horse 'Flip' who was lame.

"We were concerned about taking such a young mare to the national qualifier, but the trust between the new combination was obvious.

“On the first day they won a gold medal in Equitation.

“The following day they had two dressage tests on the outside grass arenas where it had rained the night before.

“They were going very well until the last canter where Adela slipped and almost fell.

“They recovered and finished the test beautifully.

“After this incident the officials made the call for the class to begin again indoors.

“At the beginning of the tests the mare was tense but, on both occasions, quickly relaxed.

“I was very proud of how Nathan nursed the mare around the indoor arena. They placed fourth in both tests.

“I would like to the thank the Special Olympics organisers andthe volunteers who always had a smile on their faces and a kind word to say.

“Also the sportsmanship shown by the competitors who made lifelong friendships, the parents who supported every rider, and coach, Chris Nott, who worked tirelessly to assist every competitor.

“And thank you TECHNYFLEX for ensuring Nathan and Adela are healthy and always looking their best.”

The Horse Report NORTHERN NSW HACK CHAMPIONSHIPS The 2021 Northern NSW Hack Championships, will be held at Lismore showgrounds on 28-29-30 May. This event will have a full program covering all the Grand National Qualifying events as well as Led Classes for Open and Newcomers, ridden classes for Newcomer, Preliminary & amateur owner, child’s classes, leading rein, first ridden and rider classes.

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.

Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.

It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.

These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.
