The Horse Report

Burton wins CSI4* Small Grand Prix By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Australian Chris ‘Burto’ Burton, known as one of the fastest cross country riders in the world, has triumphed over a strong international field to take the win in the 1.45 GP sponsored by the Hospital de referencia La Equina (equestrian hospital of excellence) in Manilva, Spain. Eventer, Burton, a two time Olympian, has already been showing off his talents by winning both 7 year old classes, almost as soon as he arrived at the Andalucía Sunshine Tour, one of Europe’s largest international competitions. He had his biggest win of the event so far in the 1.45m Small Grand Prix, which was a jump off class, designed by the Venezuelan, Leopoldo Palacios and sponsored by the Hospital de referencia La Equina, a medical center. Burton, was riding the fabulous 10-year-old bay mare, KWPN ‘Chedington Hazy Toulana’ who is by ‘Toulon’ from ‘Heartbreaker’. He only took on the ride recently from Edwina TopsAlexander but clearly these two have already formed a great partnership as they flew around the jump off in great

style and won the class in a time of 45.88 seconds. In second place was top French rider, also an Olympian, Penelope Leprevost who looked to be the winner of the class until ‘Burto’ took to the ring. Penelope was riding the very fast ‘Djagger Semilly’ (‘Diamant de Semilly’) but in

the end her time of 46.27s was not quite enough for the win. However she stayed in second place ahead of the Norwegian rider, Cecilie Hatteland who was riding ‘Alex’ a gelding by ‘Oakland’ and who also rode an excellent round, but her time was a little slower and she stopped the clock in 47.21s.

In fourth place was British, Chloe Winchester, who was riding ‘Icaterma’ and had a good clear round in 47.21s and in fifth was another French rider, Emeric George with ‘Calisco de Terlong’. Miguel Valdés the director of La Equina Hospital gave out the prizes. *Supplied by Sunshinetour

Superstar Tofane set to shine at Gold Coast Supplied by MAGIC MILLIONS Superstar Tofane has been confirmed to be sold at the Magic Millions National Sale this May on the Gold Coast. The four time Group 1 winner and $3.4 million earner is one of the country's most talented sprinters and will be a star attraction when offered as one of the elite mares through the Newgate Consignment. The electrifying daughter of Ocean Park is scheduled to continue racing through her last season on the track including a run in the $5 million All-Star Mile. An eight time winner and eight time placegetter from just 28 starts, Tofane shot to prominence in 2019 with back to back group race wins before flying home to beat Pierata in a memorable Group One All Aged Stakes. Last June she added another pair of Group One victories - the Stradbroke Handicap and the Tattersall's Tiara during a short and highly successful Winter Carnival. Tofane kicked away her current racing campaign with a brilliant win in the CF Orr Stakes at Caulfield before a close up third in the Futurity Stakes. “There's not much she hasn't done,” Tofane's part owner Rupert Legh said. “When you compare her to other mares she's done it all. She's not only beaten her own sex, she's won at weight for age, a handicap - she's ticking every box. “The other good thing is, she has done it in three states - Victoria, NSW and Queensland. What makes her special is she can run on any leg and on any type of ground. She's a purchaser's dream. “Her All Aged (Stakes) win was a real highlight. That last 400 (metres) when she went head for head still gives me goosebumps. “Pierata was primed to win his last race and he put a length on her at the 200 and then she pinned her ears back and I thought that was the race that told me more about Tofane

Superstar mare Tofane will be up for sale at next month’s Magic Millions sale on the Gold Coast.

than any other. “She has unbelievable determination and her will to win is incredible. “Most horses would have thrown in the towel - it was a memorable race!” Legh said there would be mixed emotions when she goes under the hammer in May. “She's such a valuable mare that she's out of my league to breed with,” he said. “She deserves the very best and for all buyers, wherever they are in the world, to have that opportunity. “Tofane will race next in the All-Star Mile and then head to Sydney - there's a few good Group One options and what races she could run in will be worked out.” As well as being an outstanding racemare, Tofane comes with a first class pedigree. She is one of three stakes performers produced by the Galileo mare Baggy Green - a three quarter sister to Funstar and half sister

to Youngstar. Tofane will be one of many outstanding race fillies to go under the hammer on Day One of the National Broodmare Sale on May 24. “We are truly honoured to be offering a mare the calibre of Tofane,” Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. “We thank connections for entrusting us to market their incredible performer to a worldwide audience. “Over the past couple of seasons Tofane has proven herself as one of the country's best sprinters and she would be a standout broodmare prospect on any farm.” The 2022 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale will be held from May 24 to 26 and will offer the finest selection of fillies, racemares and broodmares in the Southern Hemisphere. AOC supports athletes in medal incentive funding Supplied by AOC The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) is distributing $1.485 million dollars to 108 athletes as part of its Medal Incentive Funding (MIF) program, based on podium results achieved at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The MIF scheme provides athletes with a financial incentive to keep training and preparing throughout the entire Olympic quad, ultimately representing Australia at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. With 17 gold, 7 silver and 22 bronze medals at the Tokyo Olympics, 108 athletes from 15 Olympic disciplines will receive cash payments, with $20,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze. The MIF program provides support directly to athletes based on medal results at an Olympic Games, and at international benchmark events, such as World Championships in non-Olympic years. Athletes are only eligible for one MIF payment, so multiple medallists are paid at the level of their best result and each athlete in team events are eligible for funding. The AOC has distributed more than $10 million in medal incentive funding directly to athletes to support their Olympic campaigns since Rio 2016, with the $1.485 million the first payments of the Paris quad. Of the 108 athletes receiving MIF payments from their Tokyo results, more than half had also received funding due to podium results at benchmark events. AOC CEO Matt Carroll said the MIF program is helping Australian athletes pursue

Funding helps to drive athletes on to Paris From page 5 Chef de Mission of the Australian Olympic Team in Tokyo, Ian Chesterman congratulated the athletes on their phenomenal results. “The Tokyo Team inspired Australia with their performances and attitude, and I’m thrilled to see strong performances continue in international competition over the last nine months,” Mr Chesterman said. “This funding will help propel these athletes towards Paris as they continue to train and prepare to be among the very best in the world in 2024. “We saw first-hand the positive impact MIF payments had on athletes ahead of the Tokyo Olympics and this funding will help athletes stay at the top of their game as they build towards Paris 2024. “The $1.485 million in MIF payments comes off the back of our best medal tally result since Athens 2004. “The team in Tokyo set an incredibly high benchmark and I look forward to following

Page 6

Australian athletes’ progress in the next two years to Paris.” Tokyo 2020 silver medallist beach volleyballer Mariafe Artacho del Solar said the funding played a vital role for athletes chasing their Olympic dreams. With podium results at benchmark events throughout the Tokyo quad, Artacho del Solar and teammate Taliqua Clancy earned MIF each year from 2018

to 2021. “The Medal Incentive Funding has a huge positive impact,” Artacho del Solar said. “It’s motivation to keep working hard and training, to keep going for that success. “To be at the top level in beach volleyball we need to compete internationally. there’s so much involved and the costs add up travelling, accommodation, venue hire, training, food, health support and more all while being away from home for months at a time. “Not having much international competition in 2020 and 2021 made it even tougher – our main income is from tournament prize money, so the Medal Incentive Funding gave us a lot of relief and motivation to stay focused and stay in it. “It plays a massive role, not just in our athletic careers but in everyday life to support ourselves. “Looking back over the past few years, Taliqua and I were a young, fresh team. For us to have achieved so much in so little time made us so excited to continue, and we haven’t peaked.

“We have even further to grow and we can’t wait to continue to improve towards Paris 2024.” The silver medal-winning Kookaburras pooled their MIF payments to their 18-strong Olympic squad to share evenly over their wider 27-man squad, as they did with MIF payments for podium results throughout the Tokyo quad. Kookaburras co-captain and four-time Olympian Eddie Ockenden said the entire squad contributed to their Tokyo podium and is driving them towards more success in Paris. “We are driven by the motivation of being the world’s best hockey team,” Ockenden said. “We are constantly looking to improve and achieve sustained excellence and this Medal Incentive Funding supports us in doing this.” “Spreading the funding across the entire squad was athlete driven and is part of our Kookaburras culture. “The importance of the contribution from every player in the squad was even more crucial for our Tokyo Olympic campaign as the majority of matches in the 12 months leading up were intrasquad games against each other. “Without all 27 athletes in the squad we would not have achieved what we did in Tokyo or at any other major tournament. “To come so heartbreakingly close to the ultimate prize last year is spurring everyone involved with the Kookaburras to go one better in 2024.” Winter MIF payments are based on the winter competition season, with medal winning winter athletes eligible for 2022 MIF payments from July this year. Further information on the MIF program is available at www.olympics.com.au/theaoc/funding/

Beware: Conditions are perfect for mycotoxins By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic

Fungi love growing in warm, wet conditions and unfortunately this includes the fungi that grow on grass, grass seeds, hay, silage, grains and stored horse feeds, producing harmful and invisible mycotoxins. Horse health, welfare and physical performance can be severely impacted by eating mycotoxin-contaminated food and pasture. Mycotoxins are harmful substances produced by bacteria and fungi that grow on forage and grains. They can be present in pastures and grains pre and post-harvest or may build up if unprocessed grains or manufactured feeds are not well stored. They cannot be seen by the naked eye, nor detected by smell or taste. Endophytes are fungi that live in a symbiotic (mutually beneficial) relationship with pasture plants. The plant provides the fungi with protection, nutrition and dispersal. The fungi provides the plant with enhanced resistance to some insect pests, improves seedling establishment, photosynthesis, drought tolerance and increases seed production.

Page 10

Mycotoxins are harmful substances produced by bacteria and fungi that grow on forage and cannot be seen by the naked eye, nor detected by smell or taste. To date around 400 mycotoxins have been reported by scientists. Agriculture Victoria estimates that about 90% of perennial ryegrass plants in Australia are infected with endophyte. Endophyte toxin levels vary depending on the species of plant and endophyte and environmental conditions.

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com

After ingestion, mycotoxins interfere with gastrointestinal function, disrupting the gut lining and the microflora of the digestive tract before being absorbed into the bloodstream where they can impact on many organs, sometimes causing permanent damage.  continued page 11

How to choose the right mycotoxin binder From page 10

Because there are many types of mycotoxins which can act on many organs, symptoms can vary widely and may include any of the following:  Itchy skin  Head flicking or uncharacteristic spookiness  Unpredictable or naughty behaviour  "Sunburn" or photosensitivity  Greasy heel or "Summer mud fever"  Lethargy  Dull coat or patchy hair growth  Cough or runny noses  Muscle tightness or swollen lower limbs  Shuffling gait or lameness  Ill-thriftiness despite good feed. Symptom severity depends on the type and amount of toxin present and the individual's immunity or tolerance to mycotoxins. It is not unusual for one horse in a paddock to be much more affected than others on identical feeds. With high rainfall and warm days across many regions of Australia and New Zealand throughout late summer this year, affected horses need the help of a broadspectrum mycotoxin binder to stay in top health. How to choose the right mycotoxin binder Although many substances have toxin binding properties, to be effective and safe in animal nutrition a toxin binder must be able to:  bind the targeted mycotoxins;  hold on to the toxin for the remainder of the journey through the gut;  not bind important nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, and medications available for uptake into the bloodstream;  be safe as a feed additive and non-toxic to animals;  show scientifically demonstrated efficacy within animals at the lowest recommended dosage. The effectiveness of toxin binders can be improved by combining multiple active ingredients to broaden the range of toxins

Discard any leftover damp or smelly feed. Adding a mycotoxin binder to your horse’s feed will help him stay in top health. bound in the gut. They may also provide additional nutraceutical support through the addition of antioxidants, botanical extracts and probiotics. When selecting a toxin binder for your horse, ask for evidence that it doesn't tie up important nutrients including vitamins and minerals. Reduce the risk of aflatoxin contamination by only feeding forages, grains and feeds that have been well stored. Discard any damp, stained or smelly feed. If toxin binders do not rapidly assist your horse with mild symptoms, remove the horse from the pasture and seek veterinary advice. Farmalogic Grazaid is a state-of-the-art risk management solution to protect horses against mycotoxins and endotoxins. It contains synergistically acting ingredients providing multiple modes of action:  Mineral and organic binders which selectively bind adsorbable and polar mycotoxins such as aflatoxins and ergot alkaloids.

 Biotransformation agents proven to transform non-polar mycotoxins into nontoxic metabolites.  Bioprotection via live yeast probiotics and botanical extracts to provide immune support and reduce the toxic side effects caused by mycotoxins.  Macrominerals to reduce the risk of grass tetany, muscle tightness and 'grassaffected behaviour' that can occur due to seasonal nitrate and potassium spikes. Scientific investigations have demonstrated that the toxin binders in Farmalogic Grazaid are very specifically targeted to mycotoxins, leaving polar nutrients and medications available in the diet. Management of severely mycotoxin-affected horses may be enhanced with the addition of antioxidants such as Farmalogic Melox to reduce the negative impact of free radical tissue damage associated with the presence of toxins in the body. Japanese Encephalitis precautions for horses with inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), characterised by sudden onset of vomiting, high fever and chills, severe headache, sensitivity to light, neck stiffness and nausea/vomiting. Children aged under five years of age and older people who are infected with JE are at a higher risk of developing more severe illness.

By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Recently Biosecurity Queensland and Queensland Heath have issued alerts for Japanese Encephalitis (JE) following detection of cases at piggeries in Queensland, NSW, South Australia and Victoria. What is Japanese Encephalitis? Japanese Encephalitis is an acute mosquitoborne viral disease that can cause reproductive losses and encephalitis in susceptible species. Disease occurs most commonly in pigs and horses but can also rarely cause disease in other animals. Animals and people become infected through the bite of infected mosquitoes. The disease is maintained and spread through transmission cycles between mosquitoes and some wild and domestic bird species and pigs. There is no risk to humans from eating pig meat. Japanese Encephalitis in horses: In horses, many cases are asymptomatic and most clinical disease is mild, however more severe encephalitis can occur which may be fatal. Signs include fever, jaundice, lethargy, anorexia and neurological signs which vary with severity of the clinical disease. Neurological signs can include incoordination, difficulty swallowing, impaired vision,

Page 12

and rarely a hyperexcitable form occurs. Disease has also been reported in donkeys. Japanese Encephalitis in people: Japanese encephalitis is transmitted to humans through infected mosquitoes. Most human infections of JE cause no symptoms or mild symptoms such as headache or fever. A person with severe disease may present

Protections, tips and advice Make use of suitable insect repellents on all exposed skin and reapply every few hours. Water based repellents may ineffective after becoming wet. Wear long, loose fitting clothing and covered footwear when outside and ensure accommodation where possible is properly fitted with mosquito nettings or screens. Where possible and safe, consider using vapour dispensing units (indoors) and mosquito coils (outdoors) or powered insect repellents in areas such as stable and barns. Consider where possible rugging horses to provide protection against mosquito bites. Actions to take if you suspect Japanese encephalitis in your animals Japanese encephalitis is a notifiable disease in Queensland. If you suspect Japanese encephalitis in any animal, immediately contact Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23 or phone the allhours Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline (1800 675 888) and contact your local veterinarian.

The Horse Report

The problems rain can pose to horses By DAVID LOVELL BSVS The recent rains and prospects of another couple of months of the same, poses many problems for the health of the horse. In particular, we see an increase in the incidences of laminitis, colic and skin disease. Skin diseases are very common and a large number of horses are affected. The big three problems, Rain Scald, Greasy Heel and Mud Fever, are in fact, different presentations of the same disease. All are directly related to persistent wet conditions and can be difficult to prevent. As always, an understanding of how they occur is fundamental in being able to introduce management practices to protect your horse. Obviously the simplest practice is to keep your horse dry. Easy enough if stabling facilities are available however this won’t apply to the majority of horses. There is nothing wrong with washing your horse as long as he is able to dry off quickly and the skin returns to normal. The problems occur when the

The organism that causes the above three conditions is known as Dermatophilus. This is a type of bacteria that requires a particular environment to grow and survive. Primarily the requirement is protection from the oxygen and light in the environment. The bug needs to be able to hide somewhere and if the conditions are right, the germ establishes

itself, forms colonies and invades local tissues, in this case, the skin, and causes disease. Rain Scald typically occurs along the back and top-line. Greasy Heel affects the lower limbs, most commonly the back of the pastern and Mud Fever the front of the cannon bones. Different areas have some slightly different characteristics that predispose them to infections. The top-line usually is not a problem in well-conditioned healthy horses. These have nice oily skin and a very rounded elastic skin contour that water easily runs off. Horses that are debilitated have drier skin and little pockets that can hold moisture and not dry out so quickly. Their hair coat also tends to be a little longer. The pasterns, in particular the heels, often have longer hair and a number of grooves and contours that hold water. The front of the cannons obviously shed water easily but the skin is relatively thin and taut in this area. The major culprit that then contributes to development of disease is mud. Obviously the heels are usually covered, and often submerged, in mud. The cannon almost always have mud spattered all over them and the top-line can have mud under different conditions. The mud stuck to the wet skin provides a five star environment for the Dermatophilus organism to invade. The organism is ubiquitous, that means it is an environmental organism that lives everywhere. It is not contagious as such, it simply is everywhere and on the lookout for somewhere to colonise. The bacteria invade the moist

irritated skin and provoke an even greater inflammatory reaction this causes serum to exude and enables the formation of a scab which now replaces the mud as a cover for the organism. The skin infection can spread very quickly and the typical presentations occur. Theoretically, treatment is simple. Expose the organism to virtually any antibiotic or antiseptic agent and it is quickly killed. It is not resistant to drugs. The difficulty is getting the drugs to contact the organism. Obviously if the bug is hiding under the cover of mud or scab, and the drugs are applied to the surface, they do not come in contact. Similarly injectable or systemic drugs are carried in the blood but there is no blood supply to the nooks and crannies where the germ is hiding. The key to treatment is to get rid of the cover. All mud should be washed off the horse’s legs and body at least twice daily and most importantly, the skin dried with a towel. Any longer hair should be clipped or removed. Scabs are a lot more difficult. They often are painful, and there obviously already is infection present and so the horse resents attempts to remove the scab. This is critical however and measures must be taken to remove the scab. This may require sedation. Bandaging the area with a surgical soap or oil, or lanolin based ointment to soften the scab to aid removal can be very helpful. Once the scab is removed, the organism can be easily killed. Sometimes there is acute inflammation and irritation to the skin and a topical corticosteroid ointment can help.  continued page 15

Prompt treatment is essential for success  from page 14 A particular problem for rain scald can be horses with rugs that are out in the paddock in rain. The Dermatophilus organism can cause an allergic type reaction in some horses. The correct term is an immune mediated disease. In this situation the body mounts an antibody reaction to the presence of the germ which causes a vasculitis. This means inflammation of the capillaries and blood vessels. The vessels break down and serum leaks into the tissues and the lower legs swell. In particular, the reaction makes the skin extra sensitive to ultra violet light. The condition is far more common and much worse in chestnut and light coloured horses and breeds that have a finer or more sensitive skin. Once the reaction has been set up, it will persist even after the organism has long been killed because of the continual reaction to light and the vasculitis in the blood vessels. These horses often require a course of systemic cortisone to

Exposure to wet conditions can cause of many health issues. control the intense inflammatory reaction occurring in the tissues. Prevention is obviously the best way to control rain related diseases and hopefully an understanding of the reasons and factors that allow the disease to occur can play a major part. Once the problem is established, our approach at Redlands is to control the inflammation, remove hair, scab, and mud and apply medications. We commonly use a surgical type shampoo that is either iodine or chlorhexidine based to thoroughly clean the area and remove debris, and apply topical medications according to the

presentation. We also see a marked increase in laminitis and hoof infections during wet weather. The laminitis can certainly be due to the green grass and increased load of available sugar, the so called "Equine Metabolic Syndrome", which is a subject in itself, but often is just an environmentally induced inflammation of the laminae caused by continual exposure to wet conditions. This is not usually as potentially devastating as the true toxin induced founders however the mechanical manifestations can be the same and treatment is

urgent and essential. Hoof infections occur most commonly in unshod horses and any area of overgrowth, cracks, or chipping allow moisture and mud to infiltrate and set up inflammation and lameness. Bare footed horses should have their feet regularly attended to by a farrier on a four - five week basis to ensure no weaknesses develop Colic occurs commonly with any change in the weather. In periods of continual rain, all animals tend to be miserable and stand around "moping". As a result, they do not graze and eat as regularly as they would normally do and it is the disruption to the normal routine which creates gut disturbances and can lead to colic. Prompt treatment is essential to hopefully prevent the disturbance progressing to a more serious type of colic. Seemingly in recent years we are seeing more extended periods of dry, followed by excesses like we have recently had. Management should be aware of what may happen during prolonged wet weather and diligent observation of your horse can "nip any problems in the bud".

Feeding tips for calm behaviour calculated by FeedXL as a guide to how much you need to feed.

By Dr NERIDA RICHARDS There is nothing quite as unnerving or unenjoyable as riding a horse that is completely full of itself and constantly reacting before thinking. On a more subtle level, a horse that won’t concentrate or continually overreacts to aids is frustrating. While education plays a major role in determining a horse’s behaviour under saddle, feeding can also have an impact. What you feed, how much you feed and when you feed it can make a big difference. Here are some tips for feeding to assist your horse to maintain a calm and responsive attitude under saddle. Five Feeding Tips for Calm Behaviour 1. Don’t feed too much Horses that are fed more than they need for the work they do can become hyperactive and difficult to control. When feeding your horse, be careful to define your horse’s workload carefully and feed it accordingly. FeedXL defines light, moderate and heavy work as follows: Light Work: One to three hours per week of walking (40%), trotting (50%) and cantering (10%). Moderate Work: Three to five hours per week of walking (30%), trotting (55%), cantering (10%) and skill work such as low grade jumping, dressage or cutting (5%).

Pasture, hay and chaff can provide the majority of the energy in a horse s diet. Heavy Work: Four to five hours per week of walking (20%), trotting (50%), cantering (15%) and galloping or skill work such as showjumping, dressage or cutting (15%). So not only does the total number of hours of work need to be considered, but the type and speed of work must be taken into account as well. Classifying your horse in a workload higher than they actually are and overfeeding is possibly the most common cause of hyperactivity (and equine obesity). Once you classify your horse’s workload correctly, use the Digestible Energy requirement

2. Alter feeding according to workload If your horse tends to become hyperactive, especially following a day off, reducing the amount you feed from a working ration back to a maintenance ration on days off can help to solve this issue. Developing one diet for days your horse is ridden and another with similar ingredients but smaller portions for days off means your horse is only being fed what he needs on any given day. To take this one step further, if you work your horse at varying intensities on different days you may develop a couple of different working diets. For example, if you lunge your horse for 30 minutes two days a week (light work), trail ride for 1.5 hours mainly at the walk and trot with some cantering two days per week (moderate work) and have dressage and show jump lessons or competitions two days per week for 1.5 to 2 hours each with mostly trotting and cantering as well as skill work (heavy work) and your horse has one day off you could have a maintenance diet for the day off, a light work diet for the lunging days, a moderate work diet for the trail days and a heavy work ration for the lesson and competition days. That way you are constantly adjust feeding to suit workload and avoid overfeeding.  continued page 17

Feed to meet your horse’s requirements  from page 16 3. Feed ‘cool’ feeds Fibrous feeds that are fermented in the hindgut to release energy are the most natural and also the ‘coolest’ sources of energy for horses. Using forages like pasture, hay and chaff to provide the majority of the energy in your horse’s diet will help to keep your horse calm and responsive. Horses in light work should be able to happily exist on a diet made up almost entirely of forages with supplements added if and when needed (use FeedXL to determine when supplements are needed). So if your horse is in light work, don’t be too quick to reach for ‘hard feeds’, stick with forages, especially if your horse’s temperament is an issue. However, horses in moderate to heavy work often need higher energy feeds added to their diet as most physically can’t eat enough forage to meet energy requirements. In these situations where energy requirements can’t be met by forage alone, cool energy sources such as high energy fibres (sugarbeet pulp, soybean hulls, lupin hulls and copra meal), oils and high oil feeds like rice bran can be used to boost energy intake without impacting on a horse’s behaviour (though there is no guarantee). 4. Avoid ‘hot’ feeds Grains and grain based feeds, molasses and forages like alfalfa/lucerne hay tend to be

Feed a balanced diet to meet the needs of what your horse requires commonly blamed for making horses ‘hot’. Whether this is because they do actually make horses hyperactive, or because they are energy dense feeds that are easy to overfeed and therefore by default make horses hot is hard to determine. In any case, if your horse reacts to grains, grain based feeds or forages like alfalfa, avoid using these in the diet. To make it easy to avoid any feeds that contain grains or molasses, simply tick the ‘Grain Intolerant’ box when entering your horse’s details in FeedXL and any feeds or supplements containing grain, grain byproduct or molasses will be marked in RED.

5. Feed a balanced diet Some deficiencies like vitamin B1 (thiamine) and magnesium can have an impact on your horse’s behaviour. Use FeedXL to make sure your horse’s requirements for these and other important nutrients are met and avoid nutrient deficiencies that can alter your horse’s behaviour. A note on calming supplements There are a plethora of ‘calming’ supplements on the market aimed at helping to calm a hyperactive horse. Whether these supplements work or not is difficult to establish. Many studies have been conducted to assess their effectiveness with contradicting results. Most are safe supplements, commonly containing large amounts of the water soluble (and hence virtually non-toxic) vitamin B1. Some also contain magnesium and an amino acid called tryptophan. If you are fine tuning your horse’s feeding regime to ensure you are not overfeeding, adjusting feeding according to daily workload, feeding a diet based on forage, using cool energy sources when needed and feeding a balanced diet plus have your horse well educated and its behaviour is still a problem, then trying calming supplements to see if they have a positive impact is a feasible option. If they work, keep using your chosen supplement. If they don’t, keep adjusting the diet and working on education until the right balance is struck.

THE ULTIMATE QUESTION... WHAT DO ALL HORSES NEED TO EAT? Horses are herbivorous animals, from the Perissodactyl order of mammals, and can grow into big strong animals with a simple diet. They love to forage and prefer to eat grass as a natural source of nutrition in small amounts steadily throughout the day. Horses are Vegans and that is why TuffRock only makes Vegan products, like Vegan people they can eat a variety of foods and therein lies the challenge. There are so many feeds, supplement, hay and chaff choices are available we are often asked what is the best diet or how do you decide what your horse needs? You can ask your local produce, feed company or veterinarian, always they will listen. The research for the ultimate diet continues all over the world and new products come out all the time, that is why TuffRock supplements are complements to all diets, however there is one answer if you think laterally, all horses need WATER to eat!!

Page 18

Clean water should be always an everyday priority and available to drink when horses are thirsty. Their other 5 basics need to eat also include carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals however it is the ratio of each input that is the hardest question. I have asked this question of many experts and back in the day famously included Former President of American Judge Coaches, Mr Dale T Barnett, then Murray State University KY Equine Co-Ordinator, I met up with when he was judging Paint Horse Nationals, sponsored by TuffRock in Dubbo 2006. We talked deeply about issues such as Fescue Toxicosis that led us to develop TuffRock GI (featured in our last edition) and also about the 5 basic horse nutritional needs that led us to make TuffRock EJF the most affordable Everyday Equine Joint Formula. Dale and our consultant nutritionists at the time advised TuffRock EJF must be simple and look to make from our volcanic Tuff Conditioner Minerals Plus gut health action for collagen generation as the first step. Then hot synergise with Calcium stabilised Bran and Pollard (Wheat grass) for the other 4 needs including

botanic Vitamin B for calm energy and Omegas for overall joint health. We are continually amazed by how well TuffRock EJF is received by horses of all ages... from the needs of developing weanling or yearlings, incredibly popular for broodmares in their last trimester with several black type winners as a result, performance or show horses and my favourite, those we want simply comfortable in the paddock. My most famous TuffRock EJF Testimonial comes from kicking dirt at an invitational campdraft, wearing my TuffRock cap, old mate next to me proudly points to his granddaughter in the cut-out and we watched it go round. I said congratulations and he said “.. thanks, your products work, of course I asked which TuffRock he likes? Poultice is bloody good however that joint powder (EJF) is amazing, don’t know how only 1 small 50 gram scoop each day keeps my 25 y.o. horse in such great condition. I competed this horse then my daughter and now it helped my granddaughter just make the finals at the age of 8!!

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.

These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, environmental management will also so assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

EA coach of the month - Annyka Overton By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Annyka Overton is an EA Level One General Coach and SSTA based in Walcha, NSW, with a patient husband and three teenagers, "who keep me very grounded and present!" Annyka’s story "My journey from a small coastal town in New Zealand with no one in my family interested in horses to Head Coach at New England Girls School, (NEGS) Armidale has been full of amazing people who are helping mould me into the person I am yet to become. “Self-confidence and self-belief never came easy for me. “In fact, the lack of it rippled throughout my entire riding and coaching career until my 30s. “If it wasn't for a nasty fall and head injury when my children were only small, it probably would still plague me today. “That fall and the work I had to do to recover from it changed my life for the better. “Although I probably would have rather found a slightly easier route to get here, here I am. “Growing up, horses were my world and Mum, as a solo parent, did everything she could to support me and my brothers. Mum taught me the values of hard work, resilience, gratitude and kindness. “These values I still hold dear. I learnt from a young age that If I wanted something I had to go out and work for it. “Nothing came easy, but if you worked hard, there are many beautiful people out there who are willing to help you. “My first pony was a broken down palomino gelding called Carlo. “I think everyone got sick of me wanting to ride their horses, so a few banded together to give me something to care for. “Over the years, through the generosity of many, I competed several horses up to Pony Club Championships in Eventing. “Working for Cate Wallace as a competition rider at Wondaree stud was such a pleasure. “We had so much fun following the World Cup and Agricultural Show circuit all summer and Eventing all winter - I was in heaven. “When Wondaree Without a Doubt and I won the five-yearold Horse of the Year at Jumping with the stars, Cate and I both cried. “Cate is such an inspiration and I am still to this day so grateful

Annyka Overton - head coach at New England Girls School in Armidale.

for both the opportunities she gave me and the lessons I learnt whilst working for her. “I met my husband Tony while at Cate’s and eventually we settled down in a small country town in northern NSW. “Through the kindness of a good friend and neighbour I came across a coaching position at NEGS, a private boarding school with an equestrian centre as part of it’s offering. “NEGS is such a unique place to work. With more than 60 students agisting their horses onsite and competing in a range of disciplines it can get pretty hectic. “There are regular competitions where I will take a team of over 15, sometimes up to 40 girls to an event. Usually jumping anywhere from 60cm to 1.30m and Eventing up to 3*. “There is never a shortage of opportunities to observe and I immerse myself in their development. “Every student has taught me something - a new way of explaining an exercise or concept, a new way to better engage the horse and/or rider and new ways to improve their personal wellbeing through what the horse can teach them. “I am so grateful to have had access to many coaches, clinicians and coach educators that have come through NEGS. “I made a point of spending as much time in the arena as I could with every one of them. “I would absorb every exercise, quote and concept they offered their students. “Many of these coaches became my mentors and helped me to progress through my coaching qualifications. “I am incredibly grateful for the EA coach educators who have been a major part of this process. “I love that by continually upgrading my coaching levels gives me access to amazing coach educators who care about

the journey. “I am acutely aware that they are not there to tick off the paperwork, but to genuinely make sure we have all the knowledge and tools needed to move to the next level. “Alongside brilliant mentors and my own coaches, my horses and students have been my greatest teachers. “I believe that as I continually strive to grow and develop myself I have a deeper understanding of how to help others do the same. “Immersing myself in the studies such as Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Psychotherapy, Life Coaching, Brain Health and Sports Science has helped me to completely and radically change my thinking. “It has helped my to work through all the feelings of inadequacy and fear to make better choices and trust in myself. I” believe that skill, talent, strength and knowledge is only a part of what makes a rider great. “The rider's mindset is vital to

ensuring all of the above is available for use when required. “I work just as hard on my mindset as a coach. Representing Australia on several occasions as a coach would have to be one of my proudest moments. “The first time in 2015 as Chef De Quipe and Coach for two talented young riders at the Penang International Horse Show followed by several trips at Australian Coach for Pony Club Australia. “One of my favourites was the Inter-Pacific Exchange (IPE) in Hong Kong. “We made amazing friends in teams from all over the world and am so grateful for those experiences. “I’ve also worked with PCA and China Pony Club coaching, training and assessing new coaches all over China. “I made many trips over a twoyear period before COVID hit. “This was a special time and I had such a blast with the Chinese riders and coaches. I am now focussing my attention on completing my Level 2 Coaching so I can then move on to becoming a Coach Educator. “My journey hasn’t always been easy. In fact it’s been fraught with challenges, and feelings of not being good enough. “There have been so many times where I could have easily given it all up. “I probably would have if it wasn’t for several hugely supportive and compassionate coaches and mentors who kept me going. I am now ready to pay that forward.

Control, communication and the bit By TANJA KRAUS Our traditional ideas about 'the bit', it's purpose, how it's used, and how it works are some of the most, if not the most damaging ideas in the horse industry today. The idea that the bit is a control device creates a foundation for:  How we ride horses  What we choose to ride in  How we use what we ride in. The idea that the bit is a control device causes us to remain focused on control as a way of interacting and being with our horses. If we feel that we don't have 'control' the simple answer is to escalate the pressure until we regain that control. We get a bigger bit, a 'harsher' bit, we shut the horses mouth with leather straps so they can stop 'avoiding' the bit, we use a head check, draw reins, running reins, martingales, all in an effort to achieve the desired amount of control. Recently I had the opportunity to ride a retired, quite talented eventing, dressage, and show

Boogie working bridleless, to demonstrate that self carriage has nothing to do with her head, or what the rider does to it. jumping horse. He is aged, and you can imagine over decades of traditional training is considered to be 'hard' in the mouth. I rode him in a simple snaffle,

and demonstrated the use of the bit as a communication device, instead of a control device. I tuned in to the horse and what I could feel coming through the reins and used this information to have a conversation with the horse’s mouth. The change was almost immediate. He stopped pulling, leaning, bracing. There are two major elements to this, that we need to remember. Firstly - when using the bit as a communication device it is a conversation - conversations are a two way street. You must be open and willing to feel and interpret what the horse is trying to say. Secondly - he stopped all the 'bad behavior' because he didn't feel like he needed to protect himself from my hands. Let that sink in. Horses’ 'bad behavior' around the bit is often due to them protecting this highly sensitive and

delicate part of their body from you. When used for communication, the bit is carried by the horse and helps them relax through the jaw, tongue, tmj etc. We know that there are connections through the body, linking the tongue and the hind leg, and yet we brace the jaw, trap the tongue, lock the tmj and expect somehow for the horse to still move with all his athleticism and beauty. When we use the bit for communication, we allow the freedom of self carriage. Collection is a result of the horses entire body working in engagement not a result of the head being pulled into the chest. I've included in the pictures some of boogie working bridleless, to demonstrate that self carriage has nothing to do with her head, or what the rider does to it. I hope this helps

Working bridleless is all about developing communication between rider and the horse. Page 26

World Cup moving to Larapinta Equestrian By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA

2022 Queensland World Cup

Jumping Queensland (JQ) and Equestrian Queensland (EQ) would like to advise that the 2022 Queensland World Cup Show will be moving from Toowoomba Showgrounds to Larapinta Equestrian in June 2022. After many successful years at the Gatton Showgrounds the plan was to deliver the Queensland World Cup at the Toowoomba Showgrounds in 2022. Over the past few months, the Toowoomba Showgrounds with the support of EQ has been completing improvement works to the surfaces at the Toowoomba Showgrounds in preparation for the show. Unfortunately, due to recent weather and other factors the work to the surfaces are still on going and organisers are not confident that the improved surfaces will be ready for the World Cup Show in June.

Page 28

Larapinta Equestrian - 16 to 19 June 2022 As such, Jumping Queensland and Equestrian Queensland have engaged with Larapinta Equestrian to deliver the QLD World Cup Show for 2022. The dates for the show will remain the same being 16 to 19 June 2022.

We simply adore this boy and I would happily keep him for myself (with tears as I post) but he really is way too special not to be shown to his full potential. Helgstrand at Turnberry develops European links By SUZY JARRATT Helgstrand at Turnberry is Australia's newest centre for elite equestrian breeding and sales. It is based on Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula at an elite training facility formerly known as Statene Park, home to Olympian Mary Hanna. Stud Manager, Lyndall Kramer, said Helgstrand at Turnberry is a 50-50 partnership between Andreas Helgstrand in Denmark and Australian businessman, Bruce Dixon, who owns the property. “The idea is to bring European horses to Australia for sale from Denmark or from Helgstrand, Germany,” Lyndall said. “We'll also be breeding here from European mares and Helgstrand stallions and Andreas will come out every year and make a selection from the two-and-a-half-year-olds. “Some might go back to be licensed as stallions or be sale horses in Europe, others will stay here. "We'll be promoting Australian breeding in Europe and European sale horses in this country, which will make it a bit

easier for people here.” Lyndall has worked in different equine industries all over the world specialising in international dealings, and in embryo transfers. “At the Centre we presently have one embryo foal on the ground and another due in December," she said. "So far we've brought over three important Danish mares -some ridden horses arrived at the end of January. “We have to build up the infrastructure and install more stables before we bring in any more. "In 2023 we're hoping to import 10 to 15 additional sale horses on top of what we've already

imported.” Spectators at the Sydney CDLite will have the opportunity to meet Lyndall at the Centre's trade stand. "We're looking forward to answering questions and discussing with people what their specific interests are, whether it's young horses or older, proven ones,” she said. The Centre's principal rider, 25year-old Alicia Ryan, will partner her on the stand when she is not busy in the arena. She and another rider will be presenting a 6 and a 12-year-old from Turnberry, and she'll be competing in the CDN GP. “I qualified on Bluefields Furstentanz a.k.a. "William', who

I've been training since he was 5, he's now 13,” Alicia said. She first worked with Brett Parbery after finishing high school. “I then went to Bluefields in Bowral before attending university,” she said. She now has a degree in Science and a Masters in Podiatry. “I work five days a week at Turnberry and part time as a podiatrist,” she said. “Brett helped me in the early days when 'William' was young and now I'm being assisted by David Shoobridge. “In the near future I'm hoping to have some online lessons with Andreas Helgstrand himself which would be awesome.”

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
