The Horse Report Australia finishes sixth at Wellington Nations Cup

Australia has finished in sixth place at the Wellington International Nations Cup CSIO4* presented by IDA Development.

Eleven nations came forward to contest the prestigious event, which took place over two rounds of competition and was the feature class of the week-long show in Wellington, Florida USA.

Australia was represented by Lauren Balcomb riding Verdini d'Houtveld, David Cameron riding Oaks Come By Chance, Thaisa Erwin riding Vanturo and Matt Williams riding ABC Quantum Cruise.

The Australian team started the competition strong, qualifying for round two in promising form.

Matt Williams and ABC Quantum Cruise had a challenging first round, retiring from the first round, which made them Australia's drop score.

However, Lauren Balcomb and Verdini d'Houtveld delivered a sensational clear round and under time boosting Australia up the leaderboard.

David Cameron and Oaks Come By Chance finished with just four penalties in the first round with Thaisa Erwin and Vanturo finishing with eight

penalties which saw Australia finish round one in fifth position, securing a start in round two where only eight nations qualify to move forward. Many nations, including Australia, faced challenges in round two as the competition was jumped under floodlights in front of a full house and an electric atmosphere. In round two, David Cameron and Oaks Come By Chance had 12 faults, Thaisa Erwin and Vanturo had just one rail down for four penalties and Lauren

d'Houtveld had an unfortunate eight penalties. Matt Williams and ABC Quantum Cruise used all his experience to finish the second round with eight penalties.

EAHigh Performance Jumping Manager, Todd Hinde, said: “It was two rounds of tough competition and our team showed some great performances with new young horses that are stepping up to this Nations Cup level.

“It is always a privilege to be competing amongst some of the most quality combinations

from around the world, so for the Australian Team to finish overall in sixth place, it shows the camaraderie and hard work from all four riders and their teams. This definitely shows promising things to come for the future.”

The Horse Report Injury blow for vaulter

Equestrian Australia High Performance has congratulated Stephanie Dore on her FEI qualification and invitation to compete at the 2023 FEI Vaulting World Cup Final™ in the Individual Female category. Stephanie is one of only eight individual female vaulters to be invited to compete in Omaha.

In a bittersweet twist, Stephanie advised the FEI of her withdrawal from the competition due to a training injury. EAand the Vaulting community are very proud of all Steph achieved in 2022 leading into the 2023 World Cup qualification.

Steph will now concentrate on rehabilitating her injury with a view to heading to Europe to compete at Aachen this year. Further information about the event can be found on the FEI website here.

Pacific League final helps Dressage combinations

The Pacific League final was held on 24 February at Willinga Park at Bawley Point in NSW.

Fielding three combinations, the highest placed combination from the FEI Dressage World Cup Pacific League Final received an invitation to represent the region at the FEI Dressage World Cup Final in Omaha, USA.

Charlotte Phillips on CP Dresden (74.275%) won the Pacific League final.

Kerry Mack on Mayfield Limelight (68.140%) placed second. Neither combination are able to travel to the US due to Equine Influenza (EI) vaccination requirements.

The Horse Report Changing feeding routines for better health

Have you ever thought about whether the order you feed various things to your horse will make a difference to his health?

Chances are you haven’t. I know before I was a nutritionist, the thought would not have occurred to me.

But new research is showing that feeding a small amount of hay before you feed your concentrates/grain, reduces the post-feeding inflammatory effect of non-structural carbohydrates (starch and sugars).

In other words - feed hay first (about 1 kg, 2.2 lb) and then feed your grains/concentrates. Researchers from Ohio State University and Virginia Tech have recently published research showing that feeding non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) in amounts of 1.14 g/kg of your horses bodyweight (which roughly equates to 1 kg (2.2 lb) of a 50% NSC feed, 2 kg (4.4 lb) of a 25% NSC feed) causes postfeeding inflammation.

Suggesting that sub-clinical ‘digestive stress’occurs at much lower levels of intake than that required to cause noticeable physiological changes.

The ‘post-prandial inflammation’measured was an increase in plasma concentration of interleukin-1b. Interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß)

is a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine. When present in excess, IL-1ß will contribute to unhealthy levels of inflammation.

These same researchers have now shown that when you feed

0.91 kg of grass hay (approximately half of a flake/biscuit) before feeding any higher NSC concentrate feeds, the recorded levels of post feeding IL-1ß were lower than if horses were fed their concentrate first and then hay. Feeding hay first also reduces post feeding blood glucose levels.

What I find really interesting is that in humans, exposing human intestinal tissue to IL-1ß reduces ‘tight junction’integrity and may be contributing to leaky gut syndrome.

This is all getting pretty technical… suffice to say that inflammation in the gut won’t end well (for us, or our horses).

What should you do?

Well, either make sure your horse is able to graze or eat hay right up to when you feed your concentrates.

Or if your horse is meal fed, feed 1 kg (2.2 lb) of hay before you feed your concentrates. Combining this practice with also feed alfalfa (lucerne) before you ride is going to improve your horse’s gut health immensely. And it’s so simple. Hay before you ride, hay before you feed.

These small changes can make such a huge difference to your horse’s health and wellbeing. And that is truly what gets me, and everyone on the nutrition team here at FeedXLto work every day with a smile on our faces.

Building and maintaining a strong topline

It doesn’t matter which equine discipline you are involved in, building and maintaining a strong topline on your horse is important.

Strong toplines attract judges or buyers and also help ensure the horse’s back remains strong and healthy.

While work and correct muscle conditioning play a huge role in developing and maintaining topline, nutrition plays an equally important role.

To build topline you need to provide the right nutrients.

Here are five tips on feeding for topline

1.Feed enough energy (calories) for the work your horse is doing

Underfeeding means your horse will need to dip into its stored energy reserves to fuel the muscles for work. Horses will quite quickly break down their topline to use it for fuel if they are underfed.

2.Feed high quality protein. To build topline you must provide the building blocks your horse needs to make muscle.

Using feeds with protein provided by soybeans, lupins, faba bean or canola meal will give your horse access to good quality sources of protein, which builds muscle. Feeds with one or more of these protein sources are best. Avoid feeds containing cottonseed meal as the protein source. Cottonseed is a poor source of protein that is deficient in the most important amino acids (amino acids are the building blocks of protein). Feeding some lucerne hay will also contribute good quality protein to the diet.

3. Use top-up feeds designed to build top-line. There are feeds such as many of those based on rice bran or soybean that are designed to provide extra calories and protein to build topline. You can also use whey protein isolate or soy protein isolates. It is often wise to strategically feed whey protein based products immediately after work for the best timing to allow these products to assist in building muscle. 4.Feed a balanced diet. Once again it really is so important to ensure your horse’s diet is meeting all of its nutrient

requirements as any deficiency will stop your horse from reaching its potential and this includes its potential for building topline. Also, minerals like zinc are needed to effectively build muscle; failing to provide these nutrients will inhibit muscle growth, no matter how well the horse is being worked and fed with quality protein. Again, this is where FeedXLis so useful - knowing that you are feeding a balanced diet that does meet your horse’s nutrient requirements.

5. Avoid or treat back injuries. Use properly fitted saddles at all times and quickly treat any back injuries that may occur. Ahorse with a sore back will avoid using its back muscles correctly, in turn preventing it from building a strong topline.

Feeding a good diet with quality protein, in conjunction with exercise aimed at strengthening the topline should give you noticeable results in four to eight weeks.

Many horses suffer unnecessarily with health and behavioural issues because of imbalances in their diet.

Most people only think about what they hand feed their horses rather than what grass they are eating and this is just as important to their health.

Not all grass is good for horses.

How grass affects horses

It’s not that horses can’t eat any grass. Horses have evolved over millions of years as herbivores and a large part of their diet is meant to be grass.

But there is an enormous difference between the grass in the diet of the healthy wild horse who wanders over vast areas nibbling and browsing a large variety of older grasses, bushes and trees and the grass in the diet of the average domestic horse who is confined to small areas and forced to eat the regrowth or wors,e the heavily fertilised, socalled ‘improved’grasses meant for rapid weight-gain and milk production of livestock.

How do we know it is the grass that causes the problems?

When you remove green, growing, overgrazed or otherwise stressed grass from the horse’s diet the vast majority of the problems go away.

Some of the more serious problems like

head-flicking take a bit longer and may need a little more help but the differences seen when the ‘bad’grass is removed is unmistakable.

Exactly how does grass affect horses?

It is a simple matter of the physiology of the grass affecting the physiology of the horse. In a nutshell, grass requires potassium and nitrogen to grow and therefore sucks it up into the plant at every opportunity. This is facilitated by rainfall as it travels up into the plant with water.

their horses are ‘worse’after rain. Any grass under stress or influenced by certain climatic conditions for example those of early spring and autumn, especially after drought-breaking rains or consecutive cool, cloudy, wet or frosty days, is subject to acute spikes of potassium and nitrate at the same time as being low in sodium.

Feeding performance horses is not rocket science

Aperformance horse's nutritional requirements vary over the year, as they move from spelling into light pre-season work, and then into harder work.

Feeding during a break

In most disciplines, equine athletes are given time to 'spell', when muscles and joints recover, and they unwind mentally. Ideally spelling will occur at pasture living in a herd, or with access to other horses they can touch over a fence.

Unless they're overweight, feeding a spelling horse starts with providing as much roughage as they want to eat.

At least 70% should be grass or grass hay and the remainder can be lucerne, clover or oaten/wheaten hay or chaff.

If the pasture or hay is good quality it will probably provide all their protein requirements.

Horses grazing mature pastures that have dried off and contain more stalks and seed heads than leaf will need leafy grass hay and lucerne to lift their protein intake.

When spelling, your performance athlete won't require as much hard feed as they do during competition season, so only offer the hard feed necessary to maintain ideal body condition.

For some horses, grass and hay will provide enough calories, whilst harder keepers will need some hard feed to prevent weight lossand the quantity may vary over time due to changes in pasture quality and quantity. It's necessary to add vitamins, minerals and small amounts of fatty acids to complement the roughage and hard feed. Even the best pasture and hay in the world will leave your horse mineral deficient. Zinc, copper, iodine, selenium and vitamins B and E are almost always deficient in an unfortified diet.

Minerals must also be in balance with each other. Even when a diet provides enough of every mineral, if the ratios between them are incorrect, your horse won't be able to get enough to satisfy their requirements.

Feeding pre-season

Bringing your horse back into work after a

spell, requires changes to their diet. Performance horses usually come back into training at a light work load for at least a few weeks, gradually increasing to higher work levels as the competition season approaches - and the work load directly affects their nutritional requirements. If your horse is still grazing quality pasture as you begin light work, you may not need to make many changes to the diet. If you bring them into a yard environment for pre-season training, ensure you provide free choice access to quality grass hay to maintain optimal gut health. Monitor body condition carefully and if your horse loses weight, feed more calories by increasing the amount of hard feed. Mineral requirements in light work are similar to maintenance, but when you feed more hay and workloads increase, add a multi-vitamin supplement and an omega-3 source. If you use pre-mixed hard feeds, these will contain some vitamins and minerals but often horses in pre-season work don't need a full serve of feed, so you'll need to top up with a balancer supplement.

Feeding competing performance horses

Feeding performance horses properly could mean a faster round, better focus, more expressive movement and fewer errors. Correct nutrition for equine athletes is essential for them to perform at their peak, recover faster and remain healthy for more com-

petition seasons.

Am I feeding enough?:

At higher workloads, horses need more calories to fuel performance. Their recommended daily intake increases from 2% of bodyweight to 2.5%. Most performance horses need more hard feed to maintain condition. This can vary significantly between individuals, from as little as 500gms for an easykeeper on quality hay or pasture, up to 6kgs for a hard keeper eating low calorie forage. It's normal to tweak the amount of hard feed to maintain your horse in optimal body condition, but make sure they have enough leafy hay or pasture before increasing hard feeds.

Vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fats: The harder a horse works, the greater their vitamin and mineral requirements. For example, a 500kg horse not in work needs at least 20gms of calcium a day increasing to 30gms/day for light work and up to 40gms/day for heavy work.

Trends for other key minerals such as phosphorous, magnesium, potassium, sodium and chloride are similar. The requirement for sulphur, copper, cobalt, iodine, iron, manganese, selenium and zinc increases with work, but not to the same extent.

For example, a spelling 500kg horse needs 100mgs/day of copper increasing to 125mgs when in heavy work.

Awell-balanced pre-mixed hard feed may provide your performance horse with all the vitamins and minerals needed when fed according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

However, if the mineral content isn't a good complement to your forage mineral levels, or it's fed at a reduced rate, a mineral balancer will be required.

To balance forage and hard feed, choose a mineral supplement carefully.

The mineral requirements defined by the NRC are the minimum amounts needed to avoid a deficiency, and in most cases, the optimal requirement is higher - so it's acceptable to provide more minerals than the recommended daily intake (RDI), but the levels must be carefully balanced. Some minerals compete with each other at absorption points in the digestive system, meaning mineral deficiencies can occur even when you feed the RDI.

Fresh pasture is a natural source of many of the vitamins and oils horses need.

However, pasture plants mown for hay lose omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins as they dry out. Hay contains similar mineral and omega-6 fatty acid levels to the pasture it was cut from, but is low in vitamins and has no omega-3s.

When compared to their requirements during a spell, equine athletes need additional A, D, C, E and B group vitamins to function at their peak.

Although horses manufacture vitamin C in their liver and rely on their gut microbes to make B-group vitamins, performance horses benefit from a multi-vitamin supplement to

gut microbial population, often leading to loss of appetite and reduced performance. Live yeast probiotics and prebiotic supplements that help support gut microbes will assist in keeping performance horses in optimum health.

Electrolytes: The electrolytes sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and magnesium are responsible for maintaining the body's acid base and water balance. They should be consumed daily - they are not stored in organs. For maintenance, performance horses need between 7 to 12gms of plain salt (sodium chloride - also known as stock, flossy, table and pool salt) per 100kg of bodyweight every day, even when spelling. There's no need to pay extra for pink saltthe trace minerals they contain are insignificant compared to your horse's requirements. Remember to count any salt included in hard feeds and supplements when calculating how much salt to add to your horse's hard feed.

It's safe to add the lower recommended amount of salt, and offer free choice salt (clean loose salt in a bucket kept under cover) so your horse can top up when required. During hot weather, transport, and after work, feed a low sugar supplement especially formulated to replenish electrolytes lost in sweat. Electrolytes (particularly sodium and chloride) contribute to the thirst-inducing mechanism that encourages rehydration. Adehydrated horse without sufficient sodium in their blood will not know they need to drink more and will instead excrete potassium. Therefore electrolyte supplements should only be provided to a horse already in a good sodium balance.

Defining your horse's workload

MAINTENANCE

Ahorse not being ridden or lunged can be defined as a horse at 'maintenance' or 'rest' or 'spelling'. Some nutritionists even define whether the unworked horse has a high or low level of activity (depending on the paddock size and temperament of the horse)

LIGHT WORK

Ahorse in light work performs 1 to 3 hours per week: 40% walk, 50% trot, 10% canter. This could include horses used for recreational (trail or pleasure) riding, working ponies, horses during the early stages of training or beginning breaking in, or show horses given occasional work.

MODERATE WORK

Ahorse in moderate work performs 3 to 5 hours per week: 30% walk, 55% trot, 10% canter, 5% low jumps or other skill work. This could include horses used for recreational (trail) riding, beginning training/breaking, show horses, dressage, campdraft, polo or polocrosse, stock work, cutting horses, show jumpers and low level eventers.

HARD WORK

Hard work is defined when a horse performs 4 to 5 hours per week: 20% walk, 50% trot, 10% canter, 15% gallop, jumping or other skill work.

This could include stock horses, polo, high level dressage and show jumping, medium level eventing, race training.

VERY HEAVY WORK

Very heavy work is performed by racehorses, elite three day eventers and endurance horses. Their work varies - it can be 1 hour per week speed work or 6 to 12 hours per week of slow work.Their average heartbeat will be in the range 110 to 150 bpm.

Colic in your horse - symptons and treatments

What is colic?

Colic indicates a painful problem in your horse’s abdomen.

Because colic is often unpredictable and frequently unpreventable, it’s a common concern for horse owners.

Fortunately, more than 80 percent of colic types respond well to treatment on the farm.

Signs of colic in your horse

* Frequently looking at their side.

* Biting or kicking their flank or belly.

* Lying down and/or rolling.

* Little or no passing of manure.

* Fecal balls smaller than usual.

* Passing dry or mucus -covered manure.

* Not wanting to eat all their grain or hay.

* Change in drinking behavior.

* Heart rate over 45 to 50 beats per minute.

* Tacky gums.

* Long capillary refill time.

* Off-colored mucous membranes.

What to do if you suspect it’s colic

Walking can provide pain relief and encourage motility if your horse is early on in colic. Prevent your horse from rolling. Rolling can injure you or your horse.

If your horse is uncontrollably thrashing, stay out of the way. Some types of colic are linked to fever.

Horses with a fever are okay to walk while waiting for the veterinarian.

When to call the veterinarian

- You haven’t observed the horse in several

hours and you notice signs of colic

- You don’t know the length of time the horse has been showing signs of colic

- The colic is severe and doesn’t improve with walking

- The horse’s vital signs are not normal.

Treating colic with the help of a vet

When your veterinarian arrives she/he will try to determine the severity and general type of colic, if it’s more likely to be an impaction or gas colic, or if it may involve damaged gut or toxemia.

If your horse is too uncomfortable, your vet may give a short acting analgesic/tranquilizer to control the horse’s pain. Depending on your case, your vet may pass a nasogastric tube.

This narrow, long tube runs from the nostrils to the stomach to make sure fluid hasn’t built-up in the stomach.

If there’s minimal fluid, your veterinarian can use the tube to give mineral oil, water,

and/or other laxatives to relieve an impaction.

Both mineral oil and water can stimulate gut motility. Most cases will respond to this type of treatment within a few hours.

If your horses isn’t responding to treatment your vet may recommend a visit to a horse hospital equipped for abdominal surgery if the colic, and will then decide if your horse needs surgery or continued treatment and close monitoring.

Success rates after colic surgery differ with the type of gut involvement.

In general, horses have better than a 75 percent long-term survival rate after colic surgery with early diagnosis and proper treatment.

Much to everyone’s regret, sometimes the colic is so severe or the prognosis is so poor that a decision may be to euthanize the horse.

So if you suspect your horse has colic contact your local vet for advice.

Wolf teeth and what to do with them

Wolf teeth are often a question of concern in owners of young horses.

The general consensus is that your young horse should have them removed before breaking.

However, I will outline exactly why this thought process exists and why it isn’t always the best course of action.

Firstly, what are wolf teeth and why do they exist in our horses?

Wolf teeth are the remains of the ancient horse’s first premolar. Ancient fossils tell us that horses used to have seven molars with which to grind.

This is attributed to the fact that the horse used to survive primarily in forest landscapes and eat bush-like food, much more like goats and sheep.

When they migrated onto the plains and started consuming rougher grasses, their molars compensated by becoming bigger and flatter - making it easier to grind the rough grasses of their new landscape. Their first premolar became somewhat obsolete and today’s tiny wolf tooth is the result of this evolvement.

Nowadays the wolf tooth pokes through just in front of the horse’s first premolar by the age of one and they are completely useless to the horse’s masticatory needs.

About 70% of horses will get wolf teeth, sometimes two (bilateral), sometimes only one (unilateral).

They can be found most often in the upper jaw but the occasional horse will also develop them in their lower jaw, however, this is much more rare.

Blind wolf teeth refer to wolf teeth that develop under the gum and never erupt. So, why are these little teeth a problem and what will your dentist do about them?

The consensus up until now has been to remove all wolf teeth in bitted horses.

Wolf teeth are sensitive teeth, sitting in innervated gum and often with very little root holding them in place.

In fact, if wolf teeth are not extracted, a lot of wolf teeth will eventually fall out around the age of 10, give or take.

The main problem associated with wolf teeth is their interference with the bit.

When a bit is in the horse’s mouth, it shouldn’t touch the premolars unless pulled dramatically back in the mouth.

Racing and polo stables tend to routinely

remove all wolf teeth before breaking due to the nature of the sport - involving quite hard hand-to-mouth contact which can pull the bit back so as to contact the teeth.

In pleasure and other sport horses, however, a new approach is slowly being adopted. When any tooth erupts in the horse’s mouth, the longer it has to erupt, the easier and kinder it is to extract.

For example, pulling a molar out of a fiveyear-old will be a much bigger and intrusive job than pulling it out of a 25-year-old.

The same principle exists for wolf teeth and it is this concept that is making some qualified dentists rethink the previous ‘extractevery-wolf-tooth’practise.

Every horse is different and every wolf tooth is different.

In today’s equine dentistry world, the phrase ‘less-is-more’is being practised increasingly often.

As with the grinding of the sharp points, the less your dentist can intrude with the horse’s natural grinding surface, the better.

Remembering that this industry is relatively young, new information and concepts are being discussed and researched all the time. Therefore, what was once the assumed practice of pulling wolf teeth out of every horse is now being replaced by a case-by-case analysis.

If a young horse is going to be broken and

the impact of their wolf teeth is negligible in regards to the contact this horse will have with the bit, then leaving the wolf teeth a little longer will only make the entire process less invasive for the horse.

Especially if the horse is likely to be broken, then left for a while, less is definitely more when it comes to extracting teeth from a young horse’s mouth.

While it is a known consequence that wolf teeth can affect the ridden horse, more often then not their removal can be left until a slightly older age, by which time the teeth will be fully erupted and relatively easy to remove.

This is something I discuss with each individual owner, explaining the pros and cons of both courses of action and in most cases owners are happy to leave the tooth to mature a bit more.

Ayoung horse should be seen by a qualified dentist every six months, at which point the state of the wolf teeth in question, the amount of work the horse is doing, and the behaviours of the horse under saddle are all re-evaluated.

Dentistry is now more than ever an industry of horsemen and women evaluating the best course of action for your individual horse. There is no hard and fast answer when it comes to wolf teeth, just many individual cases that need to be considered as such.

Increasing the health and well-being of your horse, improving digestion, improving skin and coat condition, boosting the immune system and slashing your feed bill is not difficult to achieve.

In this article I show you how.

Thehorse’s digestive system

Horses grind their feed very thoroughly to a size less than 20mm so as to prepare it for digestion within the small intestine. Fermentation and the breakdown of fibre do not occur until the feed reaches the hindgut. Horses that tend to eat too quickly or ones with poor teeth will cut down the required process allowing the feed to reach the hindgut not fully digested. This can lead to digestive upsets.

Horses take about 1000 jaw, mastication movements to chew 1kg of grain and about 3000 to chew hay - pretty amazing when you think about it, 1kg of grain is a reasonable amount of grain.

Routine checks of your horse’s teeth are essential to maintain the condition particularly with horses that are feed hard feeds and are working reasonably hard. Sharp edges can develop on the cheek or large pre-molars and molar teeth. The horse has a bottom jaw that is not as wide as the top jaw, sharp points may develop due to the side-to-side action of the jaw, which is required to grind the feed well.

What to feed?

Feeding a diet that is designed for the species is essential; this involves feeding a natural diet.

Horses have the most remarkable grinding

process within the mouth able to pulverise a handful of whole oats in just seconds. They are the only species in the world that have this particular jaw action and remember that the anatomy and physiology of horses has not changed but the way we are feeding has.

The onset of fast food for horses with its socalled time saving approach has only complicated the situation, not just for horses but for horse owners as well.

Horses cannot make life choices where feeding is concerned as their lives are in our hands.

History and symptoms of Hendra Virus

Hendra Virus was discovered following an outbreak of illness in horses in a large racing stable in the suburb of Hendra, Brisbane in 1994. The natural host for Hendra Virus is the flying fox. The virus can spread from flying foxes to horses, horses to horses and rarely, from horses to people.

Since Hendra Virus was identified in 1994, more than 90 horses are known to have been infected. These animals have either died as a direct result of their infection or have been euthanised. Several hundred people have been exposed to Hendra Virus infected horses but have not been infected.

However, seven people have been confirmed to have Hendra Virus following high levels of exposure to infected horses. Four of these people died, the most recent in 2009.

While the exact route of infection is unknown, it is thought that horses may contract Hendra Virus infection from sniffing or eating matter recently contaminated with flying fox urine, saliva or birth products.

Spread is possible wherever horses have close contact with body fluids of an infected horse. Small amounts of the virus may be present in a horse's body fluids, particularly nasal secretions, for a few days before they become sick.

The seven confirmed human cases all became infected following high level exposures to respiratory secretions and/or blood of a horse infected with Hendra Virus, following activities such as assisting with post mortem examination of a dead horse without adequate personal protective equipment (PPE), performing certain veterinary procedures or having extensive exposure to respiratory secretions without adequate PPE. Other people have reported similar contact with

infected horses but have remained well and their blood tests have shown no evidence of infection.

No one with a lower level exposure (e.g. grooming, feeding, patting) has ever developed Hendra Virus infection or shown evidence of infection in blood tests.

Hendra Virus is killed by heat, drying and cleaning with detergents.

Avaccine to prevent Hendra Virus infection in horses has been available since November 2012. While the vaccine has been shown to be safe and to provide high levels of protection in horses, continued efforts to reduce exposure of horses to Hendra Virus are essential.

It is important to protect horse food and water from contamination by flying fox fluids, isolate sick horses early while awaiting test results, and pay attention to standard hygiene and cleaning practices.

Hendra symptoms in horses

Hendra Virus can cause a range of symptoms in horses. Usually a sudden fever and either respiratory or neurological illness and rapid death. In some cases the onset of illness is gradual

Symptoms can include:

* Laboured breathing

* Frothy &/or blood stained nasal discharge

* Atemperature (usually but not always higher than 40°C)

* Neurological changes, including tilting of the head, loss of vision, abnormal muscle twitching, weakness and loss of balance

* Colic like discomfort.

Most cases in horses are fatal but occasionally a horse will survive the infection. The reported mortality rate in infected horses is greater than 70%.

Hendra symptoms in people

If you have been in contact with an infected horse please seek medical attention immediately.

Symptoms typically develop between five and 21 days after contact with an infectious horse. Fever, cough, sore throat, headache and tiredness are common initial symptoms. Meningitis or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) can then develop, causing headache, high fever, and drowsiness, convulsions and coma.

Hendra Virus infection can be fatal.

“BYE BYE FLY”

QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.

Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:

The Horse Report Para-equestrian shares her passion for horses

Para equestrian Emma Booth, 31, has spoken to the Para Equestrian Digest about her work with training Thoroughbreds for para sport and the role horses have played in her life since the car accident that left her paralysed in 2013.

“I was an eventer prior to my accident and predominantly rode ‘off-the-track’

Thoroughbreds during this time,” Emma said,

“Since becoming a para rider, I have been lucky enough to ride some beautifully bred and trained Warmbloods, but got to a point where I knew I’d find the challenge of retraining a Thoroughbred extremely rewarding.

“I put my feelers out and was given a retired racehorse called Pakaya Prince, aka Ben, by a local trainer named John Macardle.

“I knew right away that Ben had a number of the attributes I would normally look for in a para dressage horse, and to make matters even better, he was a particularly good looking boy.

“Personality-wise, Ben is a big teddy bear and a real sweetheart that loves to cuddle.

“He's got such a good brain, a really good work ethic, and he tries super hard; that is something that I think all successful highlevel equestrian horses need to have, a good work ethic.

“He's just a lovely big bloke that looks after me and I can have a bit of fun with him. He's a great horse to keep me in the competition ring and more importantly, just to enjoy riding.”

Emma said Ben is such a fun horse, she can really trust him and relax with him.

“It’s fulfilling getting to watch these lovely animals adapt to their new job and enjoy a meaningful, loving life after racing,” she said.

“From my past experience with Thoroughbreds, I know they are particularly versatile, and for this reason expected them to be very trainable for para riders.

“For me, the trick is to give these horses a long enough spell after they retire to let their bodies and brains reboot, and switch off from their past career as a racehorse.

“I believe it’s important to take the training

with them slowly. And if you give them the time and space to understand everything you’re asking of them, they’re generally a very willing breed and will try hard to please.”

However, Emma acknowledged that, as with certain warmbloods, not every Thoroughbred will make a good para horse. She said that para horses generally need to have a constant desire to move forward without tension.

“If you have a horse that is too sensitive or ‘hot’, this can lead to them overreacting to the aids and then getting nervous about what’s happening or what you’re asking of them,” Emma said.

“I only ever use my whips with gentle taps as a compensating leg aid but as with warmbloods, if they’re too sensitive, asking for anything with whip commands can become near impossible while keeping the body relaxed and supple at the same time.”

Horses have played a huge role in Emma’s life, and she has always been extremely passionate about riding.

But it wasn’t until her ability to walk and run was taken away from in 2013, that she completely appreciated the significant roles

horses play in bringing purpose and meaning to people’s lives, and how perceptive horses are to their riders.

“My main para competition horse – who took me to two Paralympic Games and a World Championship – was called Zidane,” she said.

“I still believe that he was capable of reading my mind. Zidane somehow knew what I wanted even when I could not use my legs to give him direction, and sometimes I didn’t even 100% know what I physically did to achieve a particular movement with him. Zidane was a particularly special horse and he was so in tune with me and my way of riding.

“But more than that, he was probably the most healing aspect of my life after it was completely turned upside down at the age of 21.

“He did for me what no person or people could have to help get my life back on track, and I’ll forever be truly grateful to him for this.

“It’s ironic that this level of acceptance and understanding has sometimes been lacking outside of the horse world.”

“What happened to your legs?”, “How long are you going to be in that thing?” or “Can you have children?” when you’ve literally just met them, aren’t the type of positive, respectful questions she wants to hear.

“These aren’t made up scenarios either. I can assure you this type of thing happens time and time again,” Emma said.

“And this often happens in a setting such as a supermarket when I’m simply trying to go about my daily business.

“I once had a lady come up to me in the street and tell me she wished she could put her hands on me, tell me to walk to her and that I would be able to.

“I vividly remember I’d only recently been discharged from hospital after what can only be described as the most difficult six months of my life - physically and mentally.

“I very nearly lost my life so I was grateful to be back home with my family and was just wanting to start feeling like a regular 21year_old again.

“My sister and I were waiting in a very short line to be seated at a café for brunch when the woman standing behind us looked at my wheelchair and asked, ‘What happened?’ That was all she asked.

“She didn’t introduce herself, or ask how our day was going. Nothing humane like thatshe just asked ‘What happened?’

“I think back and wish I had answered differently, but I was shocked and all that came out of my mouth was car accident.

“I thought this would be enough to stop her but unfortunately it wasn’t - ‘Were you the driver?’she asked, as if this would change her opinion of me.

“Luckily the waiter soon interrupted and took us to a table. I remember being so shook up.

“Every emotion I’d been trying to manage over the past six months was about to bubble over, all because someone I’d never met felt they had the right to pry, and ask me such a personal, emotionally triggering question.”

Emma said the point of this story is that you don’t know where someone is at in their journey.

“The point of this story is that you don’t know where someone is at in their journey,” she said.

“You don’t know and frankly it’s none of your business.

“This is basically the equivalent of approaching someone you have never met, with zero context and asking them ‘Can you tell me about the most horrific, life changing, emotionally challenging thing you have ever

experienced?’

“People simply wouldn’t do this, so they shouldn’t feel like they can ask someone with a disability the same.

“So yes, ask questions, ask questions that are thoughtful, considerate, or that might be educational.

That first hello and creating a connection

Here at Holistic Equine Education we are excited to welcome to the team, Angel. Angel will be my (Tanja's) horse, and will be brought on slowly to start sharing and eventually taking over Boogies responsibilities (I cannot believe that Boogie is 15! Time for her to spend less time travelling.)

I knew about Angel and agreed to buy her before we met.

She is a well bred little horse, who had a little trouble becoming overwhelmed when the breaking in process was started. So the process was stopped, and she went to a friend of mines to go back into a herd, until her future could be decided. Seeing how I was looking for a new addition, don't mind the challenge of a horse that has struggled, and she is the right age (turning 4 in August), I decided to take her on. We met for the first time in March I was able to share the importance of that interaction with the boutique clinic participants.

First impressions definitely count, and I was very mindful in how I interacted with her. Like they say you don't get a second chance to make a first impression, and seeing how she had already had some training which she didn't handle well, it was even more important.

I really wanted to communicate to her a number of things from the start. Things like;

You are safe, You can trust me, You can tell me, and I will listen, I speak quietly and I hold space. I started at liberty, but not in the traditional or expected way. I did not 'send' her or 'chase' her in any way. I also didn't 'beg' her, or ask her to come with me in any way. I just let the conversation start, and then I let it flow. She talked, I listened. I talked, she listened. It really was quite unremarkable

from a spectator standpoint, but from a connection standpoint it was miles above previous experiences that I would have facilitated in the past, in a misguided attempt to establish 'respect'. The truth is by allowing her time and space, and simply holding my own time and space, this developed an organic and genuine respect in both of us. Horses want to connect with us, we just have to give them the opportunity.

EASTER HOLIDAY PONY CLUB CAMP

The Murwillumbah Pony Club & Zone 15 Pony Club will be holding a two day camp on Thursday and Friday 13 & 14 April 2023 focussing on flat riding and dressage.

Following the camp, there will be two days of competition giving riders the opportunity to show off what they have learnt at camp.

There will be a Hack Show run by NNSW Show Horse Council on Saturday, April 15 and then on Sunday, April 16, the Tweed Valley Equestrian Group will run a Dressage day.

Day membership is available both days. This will give riders an awesome opportunity to have two days of instruction followed by two days of competition.

The Murwillumbah Showgrounds offer great facilities, stables, camping, canteen, new dressage arenas, jumping and sporting equipment, qualified instructors and friendly helpful members. New members are welcome to join the club and join in the fun but riders from any club are welcome to come along.

The Horse Report Imperatriz dazzles in William Reid Stakes

Superstar New Zealand based sprinter Imperatriz has won her first Australian Group One but the fifth of her illustrious career with a smashing win in the William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley. Imperatriz (pictured) produced a sweet performance for favourite punters when she sprinted hard in the straight for an easy length success.

Regular rider Opie Bosson had the mare sitting about midfield during the early and middle stages before making his move, edging toward the leaders down the track.

When he asked for a supreme effort in the straight she firstly raced to the front and then held off the challengers in a commanding performance.

The win was the first at Group One level in Melbourne for returning Te Akau trainer Mark Walker and he was a proud man in the winner's stall post race.

"We've been a bit unlucky in Group Ones, especially in Melbourne over the years, so it was great to get that win," Walker noted.

"I was away for quite a while, I was 11 years in Singapore, but to come back so soon and do it was very satisfying.

"She's just been trouble free this preparation and it was a fantastic ride of Opie's as well - he just timed it perfectly."

"We had to make quite a long, sustained run, so full credit to the mare, she's a beauty."

Walker said the mare would most likely return for a break at Te Akau Stud after taking her career record to 13 wins from 19 starts and over $1.7 million in earnings.

The win provided big race jockey Opie Bosson with a huge buzz.

"I think it's only my second winner here at The Valley," Bosson pointed out.

"I was a little bit nervous going out

there, but she did it all for me, she's a wonderful mare."

"She's just got an amazing turn of foot. She can get herself out of trouble and she can run out a strong 1400, so 1200 wasn't going to be too much of a problem. "There was a lot of pressure, I got back probably a couple of spots further than I wanted to, but I ended up getting a nice drag into the race and she did the rest"

"I sensed her (the runner-up), I gave her a couple behind the saddle and those ears pinged back and she gave again because she does tend to loaf a little bit when she gets in front by herself.

"But when she heard that other horse coming she gave it another crack."

Bosson praised all of the Te Akau team who each play their part in the Imperatriz journey.

"It's amazing. The whole team at Te Akau…it's just a privilege to ride these horses. David Ellis buys so many amazing horses I get to sit on and I've got the dream job in New Zealand," he said.

Imperatriz was purchased by Ellis for $360,000 from the draft of Bhima Thoroughbreds at the 2020 Gold Coast Yearling Sale. The Bhima team were presenting her on behalf of breeder Raffles Dancers.

She follows in the hoofsteps of other Group One winners like Princess Coup, Tell a Tale, Sword of State and Costa Viva to have been purchased from the Gold Coast to then win at racing's elite level for Te Akau.

Her dam, Berimbau, was third in a Group Two Moonee Valley Fillies Classic behind Lumosty. She is also the dam of the Sydney winner Cabaca - also a Magic Millions graduate. Berimbau is a half sister to the multiple stakes winner and January's $1 million Magic Millions Cup winner Vinco - a star for the Tony Gollan stable.

“BYE BYE FLY BYE FLY”

QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE

ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.

Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:

Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.

It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and Camphor oil” which naturally relieves itchy skin.

These significant benefits are also enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can also be applied to surface wounds, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help prevent irritation and possible infection by nuisance insects.

Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extensive field experience has proven KURITCH to be a most effective solution for both preventing and healing distressing skin conditions caused by biting insects.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

Midges breed near stagnant water. As they don’t fly more than a few hundred metres from their breeding area, housing or paddocking your horses more than 500 metres from those areas will reduce their exposure to the flies.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies.

Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites.
