The Horse Report

A horse- welcoming hidden gem By MELISSA RIMAC Diamond Beach on the NSW Mid North Coast stretches on, and blissfully further on, fringed by a bird- rich swathe of coastal heather. For much of the year, the only footprints in the sand are likely to be your own. Sometimes the dolphins come in really close; other times, you can make out the feather features on sea-eagles. Best of all, your horse is welcome here. If your notion of a special holiday involves riding your horse along a gloriously empty, outstretched beach to your heart's content whilst lapping up replenishing comforts, Diamond Beach really shines. As one of the rare beaches that are 24/7 horse and dog friendly - with the wilderness visuals and vibe unhampered by four-wheel drives - it's not at all a stretch to refer to Diamond Beach as a gem. Just a short walk from the white sand awaits supremely comfortable, fetchingly atmospheric lodging for horses, hounds and their consequently deeply contented humans. Sea Horse Diamond Beach is a thoughtfully appointed, spacious beach house surrounded by fragrant and exuberant tropical gardens, with a vast, spongey lawn for dogs to play on and a lush, shaded paddock for visiting horses. Staying here feels akin to inhabiting your own private resort. As well as Diamond Beach - reached by way of a 10 minute amble from Sea Horse - there are plenty of rewarding rides in this typically overlooked area north of Forster. Horses can also be ridden on nearby Nine Mile Beach - also known as Tuncurry Beachalthough vehicles do use this beach. The northern section of this is more pleasant to access and typically less crowded. If you ride a little north from Sea Horse onto Old Soldiers Rd, there are bush trails threading through eucalypt forest.

Diamond Beach on the NSW Mid North Coast is an ideal place for horses, dogs and people to explore and enjoy.

Nearby Possum Brush, which you would need to float to, is popular with local riders and offers a diverse range of forest rides, including trails through carpets of ferns. However it can feel superfluous to go too far from the beach. Mornings are most magical at what soon feels like 'our local', when the water is at its most aquamarine. After a ride on Diamond Beach, you can top off the buzz by having a coffee at horse friendly Diamond Drive Café. Or, if you've been to the beach for an afternoon ride, a ride up tipple might be appropriate. Nearby Red Head Beach, which is accessed by a bird - embellished track through rainforest, and Blackhead Beach, home to a large ocean pool at the southern end and distinctive for its stately procession of Norfolk Island Pines, are open to dogs for most of the day. Just about all the local cafes are dogfriendly. Walking through rainforest, we have the hidden rocky coves behind Redhead and Blackhead Beach all to ourselves. Diamond Beach and Redhead Beach are dot-

ted with whale watching platforms which also make for wonderful viewing perches. After beach-time, we eagerly head back to Seahorse to lounge upon the daybeds around the pool. As I cook up a storm in the large, well equipped kitchen, I watch the ocean turn metallic with the afternoon light. Continued page 4

Choosing the fencing that suits your needs Thinking of building a rural fence? Rural fencing can be used to fence both large-scale farms and small acreage blocks, can indicate a property boundary, used for Livestock control as well as preventing access to people or animals. There are many types of rural fences for different situations. These rural fences include: Razor wire fence: This can help in containing animals such as cattle. Woven wire fence: For containing foals and to keep dogs either in or out Post and rail fence: Combinations of wooden posts with either rails, plain wire strands, great for horses. Plain wire fence: Common in rural areas and are cheaper than other types of rural fence. Electric fencing: An effective way to keep your animals safe, protect expensive timber fences by using stand offs, separate pastures or as temporary fencing. Instead the timber is fully coated in recycled agri-waste - yes, reusing rubbish. Recycled plastic from irrigation pipe off the vineyards, orchards and farms of Australia. This makes the post recyclable at end of life. The post can be "peeled" like a banana and the timber can be mulched or burnt,

Arena maintenance the key to arena longevity By EQUESTRIAN LAND DEVELOPMENTS (ELD) The most common queries we receive at ELD are related to maintenance of arenas. Arena surfaces do have a life span (generally five - seven years) and regular maintenance is the only way to ensure you get the most out of the surface. An arena is no different to any other product or purchase you invest in. If there is a lot of traffic on your arena you will need to undertake maintenance practices more often then an arena used on the odd occasion. A 'service' for your arena may involve getting a professional in once every three, six or 12 months, depending on the use of your arena, to laser level the surface back to the original state. MAINTENANCE TIPS 1. Drag the surface regularly with a product designed for the job. ELD have seen many ways of dragging your arena, the most popular include gates - designed to keep horses in paddocks and tines, harrows and ploughs which can wreak havoc with your arena base layer as they are designed to rip up soil for planting. ELD recommends using the ELD Arena Spread-a-bar® in a different direction every time. This will help ensure the surface does not build up in areas. Every time place your ELD Arena Spread-a-bar® in a different corner when you commence to help drag out any build up. It is best to start on the quarter line of your arena and work your way out towards the edge of the arena. Then return to the outer edge. Try off-setting the ELD Arena Spread-a-bar® to one side of your towing vehicle enabling you to bring the surface away from the edges and back onto the track. Be creative by the use of circles, triangles and the traditional rectangles each time you drag your arena and you will spread the surface more evenly. Your arena should be dragged a minimum of once a week. Depending on the level of use, maintenance may need to be done

from drainage points as this will affect the arena’s ability to drain. When mowing around the arena flail the cuttings away from your surface to stop the spread of grass seed. 4. Never leave horse unattended on the arena. Using your arena as a 'stable' or 'paddock' will not only result in your surface breaking down at a faster rate, but rolling and pawing can do damage to the base layer under your surface. If you plan on lunging on your ELD arena, ensure you move up and down the surface rather than staying in one spot - as this will ensure your blinding layer is not damaged and stop surface building up in one spot. 5. To prevent surfaces drying out. - the ideal option is to install a sprinkler system. This will aid, not only in minimising dust levels, but also to achieve a consistent "ride" or "feel" for daily training. Surfaces have bulking factors and react greatly to the weather. As a result in dry times the surface will feel looser, when the surface is wet it will provide a firmer ride. General maintenance every week may help add life to your arena.

Regular maintenance of your arena will extend its life. on a daily basis. of hay or similar will help to slow As a rough guide - 1 horse per down the water flow during day, once per week, 2 horses per downpours avoiding damage to day - twice a week and so on. batters and surface. 2. Keep grass and weeds away from your arena surface. A professionally constructed arena will have the base compacted and be made of a suitable qualityassured product so weeds and grass will rarely grow up from underneath. Most weeds on your arena are deposited by birds flying above and in manure. Smaller weeds should be easily pulled out without damaging your base. If weeds and grass are left long enough, without removal, they may take root in your base causing damage to the structure. Keep weeds and grass away from the edge of your arena as this will also slow down your drainage. During storm season it is suggested that the grass is kept fairly close to the arena surrounds (within 30cm) to slow down the water and avoid the surface blowing out while dealing with the large quantities of water in a short period of time. Contolling insects that can affect horses There are two types of mosquito-borne viruses namely arboviruses and flaviviruses.

Insects are not only very annoying for horses but can be painfull and the cause of disease and health issues. Some of these insects include mosquitoes, horse flies ( March flies), midges and sandflies, buffalo flies and bot flies.

Alphaviruses Alphaviruses include Ross River virus (RRV) which can cause disease and death. Clinical signs in horses of Ross River virus include: Fever, reduced appetite, muscular soreness, reluctance to move, sometimes swollen joints and glands.

MARCH FLIES (also known as horse flies) bite horses for a bloodmeal. Anticoagulants in the saliva of these flies can prevent blood from clotting and allow the fly to continually lap up blood from the horse. (around 300mls a day in some cases!) STABLE FLIES (Family Muscidae) are annoying and can transmit the larvae of Habronema worms that cause summer sores. These are skin lesions that can develop in moist areas such as the membranes of the eye, on the sheath, or in open wounds. The migration of the larvae causes hard nodules of red tissue with yellow spots, which enlarge and spread. The nodules can bleed and weep fluid and become infected. This attracts more flies which can continue the cycle of irritation and inflammation. BITING MIDGES OR SAND FLIES (Family Ceratopogonidae) can produce an array of symptoms including pain, itching, allergic reactions and cellulitis. Over time some horses can develop an allergic reaction to sandfly and midge bites – this is known as ‘Queensland itch’ which can be intensely itchy leading to trauma, sores and

Flies are not only annoying but can cause summer sores.

hair loss. Horses with Queensland itch can lose condition due to always scratching. BOT FLIES (Gastrophilus spp) can be associated with irritation when eggs are laid on the hair of the legs and face. The bot fly larvae is then transferred to the stomach and may lead to gastric ulceration. MOSQUITOES (Family Culicidae) have been known to transmit viruses.

Flaviviruses Flaviviruses can infect the brain and nervous system of horses and humans. Most flaviviruses are exotic to Australia, however, Kunjin virus and Murray Valley Encephalitis (MVE) occurs in Australia and has caused deaths of horses and humans. Although most horses infected with flaviviruses remain clinically well, others may develop abnormalities of the brain and spinal cord. Clinical signs can include: changes in behaviour, facial paralysis, difficulty swallowing, ataxia (wobbliness), blindness, inability to rise. CONTROL MEASURES Regular worming Regularly apply insect repellents Rugging horses Stabling horses around dawn and dusk Stable fans Clearing stagnant water from around stables and paddocks.

Understanding what to do when weaning By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic

Weaning can be a very stressful time for a young horse and his or her dam. Strategies such as progressive weaning or weaning foals in groups can reduce stress around weaning. Correct nutrition and strategic use of probiotics before, during and after weaning can contribute significantly to the health and wellbeing of mare and foal alike. Start-of-life nutrition is critical to the development strong bones, muscles and connective tissue as well as the internal organs, including heart and brain. If your broodmare has been fed correctly through pregnancy and lactation, your weanling has had every chance to develop a strong body, good immunity and digestive health for better resilience through weaning and beyond. Prior to weaning, your foal would have most likely have been sharing the mare's roughage and hard feed, taking an increasing share of her food. As the foal starts eating more grass, hay and hard feed it will drink less milk so the mare's feed requirements begin to reduce gradually. During the first week of weaning, continue to feed the foal the proportion of each meal you estimate s/he was taking from the mare's feed. Do not change ingredients of the foal's ration during weaning. If changes are to the diet are needed post-weaning, make changes gradually over a 10 to 14 day period. Weaning time is hard on the

Correct nutrition for the mare can lead to strong and healthy foal, making the weaning process less stressful.

mare too, due to stress and the risk of mastitis. Stop giving the mare grain/pellets for a few days after the foal has its last drink of milk. Feed the mare grass hay and dry pasture supplemented with mineral balancer pellets or powders mixed into a token hard feed. Avoid lush grass and do not hard feed the mare until her udder softens. The stress of weaning can have negative impacts on the digestive tract and beneficial gut flora, often leading to digestive upset and diarrhea in both mare and foal. If severe, colic and laminitis can occur. Research demonstrates that use of oral probiotics, including strains of live yeast from the genus Saccharomyces, reduce diarrhea and gut acidity and help to maintain a more stable gut microbiome during times of stress.

Body condition, growth rates & Developmental Orthopaedic Disease Veterinary advice to reduce the risk of growing horses developing OCD is to limit calories to prevent very fast growth whilst ensuring enough amino acids, vitamin, minerals and polyunsaturated fatty acids (especially omega3s) are provided for development of strong bones , muscle and other tissue. Foals and weanlings should not be overweight - aim to maintain body condition score (BCS) at 4.5 to 5.5 on a 9 point scale. You want to be able to just see the ribs - and always ensure that ribs can be felt in growing horses.

Steps to formulate a well-balanced weaning ration From page 10 1. Roughage is always the basis of a healthy ration The first rule of good horse nutrition is to feed plenty of roughage as pasture, hay or chaff. Unless your weanling is overweight, it is safe to feed as much grass-based roughage as s/he will eat. When the pasture is not plentiful, replace it in the diet by providing grass hay. 2. Ensure Enough Quality Protein Weanlings need high quality protein in their diets to grow strong and develop muscles especially lysine, a key amino acid which they are unable to produce in their bodies. Other important essential amino acids are methionine, threonine and leucine. Legume forages and grains including lucerne, clover and soybean meal are effective options for adding essential amino acids to growing horse rations and are commonly found in commercial feeds formulated for breeding horses. Pure amino acid supplements can also be used in carefully calculated amounts to meet shortfalls if necessary. 3. Only Add Calories if Necessary Weanlings only need an additional calorie source if they lose weight or grow too slowly on all-they-can-eat forage plus enough protein. This can occur due to a reduction in pasture or hay quality or when the foal has a growth spurt. The best way to determine a weanling's energy requirements is to carefully and regularly monitor body condition score and, if possible, measure growth rate by regularly weighing on scales. 4. Balance with vitamins, minerals and oils It is critical to provide vitamin and mineral supplementation to satisfy your weanling's daily requirements. Failure to do so will compromise the long-term structural soundness of your young horse. Weanlings usually require more calcium, sodium, phosphorous and manganese than that provided by pasture. All equine foragebased diets need added copper, zinc, iodine and often selenium. It is also essential that the critical mineral ratios are balanced over the entire diet to optimise availability and uptake. Vitamins and oils are also important to sustain healthy growth and development in young horses. It is advisable to provide weanlings with a source of supplementary vitamins, including vitamins A, B, E, K, folate and biotin. A small amount of oil is also essential in any equine diet. Ensuring a good balance of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids relative to omega-6 is important for many reasons, including development of the heart, skeletal and nervous systems as well as the correct functioning of the immune system. Do I need to feed a commercial breeding horse pellet? A quality breeding-specific commercial premixed feed can simplify the process of feeding your weanling a well-balanced diet, but

EQUINE NUTRITION PYRAMID FOR A WEANLING. Roughage forms the foundation of any well-balanced horse diet and provides much of the energy (calories) a growing horse needs. Weanlings will usually need a protein supplement to provide adequate amino acids for growth and development. It is common to need to supplement with an energy source at some times of the year and during growth spurts to avoid a drop in body condition. The percentage of the diet provided as an energy concentrate varies significantly depending on foal breed, growth rate and pasture quality. A quality vitamin/mineral supplement, salt and an omega-3 fatty acid source are necessary to complete dietary balance.

Figure 2. A growing horse's calcium and phosphorous requirements are much higher during the first two years than in later life. A weanling's diet must contain supplementary calcium and phosphorous with the levels balanced over the whole intake to provide approximately twice as much calcium as phosphorous.

only when they need the full daily recommended amount of the feed. If he or she needs less calories than the feed provides, you will need to separately supplement extra protein and mineral levels to avoid a deficiency. For this reason, it may be simpler to provide a protein source and vitamin, mineral and omega-3 supplements separately from the

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com

energy source. This allows you to easily change the diet in response to pasture seasonality as well as your yearling's changing needs over time. It can be a wise investment (for your pocket as well as your horse's health) to seek the advice of a qualified equine nutritionist during this critical stage of the life of your young horse.

Simple steps for weight gain in horses By Dr NERIDA RICHARDS While many of us struggle to keep weight off our horses, it seems a large number of horse owners have equal trouble when it comes to putting weight on their horses. Putting weight on, and keeping weight on a horse that is a “hard keeper” can sometimes be a frustrating task for the horse’s owner. Here are seven simple steps you should take to putting weight on your horse: Step 1: Worms Make sure your horse is wormed with an effective wormer. If you are not sure which wormer to use ask your veterinarian and make sure that you are worming for Bots as well as Tapeworms at the right time of year. Step 2: Teeth Have a qualified dentist correct any issues with your horse’s teeth. If it is painful or difficult for your horse to chew he/she just physically won’t be able to consume the amount of feed needed to gain weight. Step 3: Health Ask your veterinarian to carry out a full health check to make sure there is no underlying disease like gastric ulcers ( common in off the track thoroughbreds) that can prevent the horse from eating and gaining weight. If you do discover your horse has a problem with ulcers or any other condition have them treated with appropriate medications. Please note that if your horse is emaciated and has come from a starvation situation, you should follow the guidelines published

There are simple steps to helping your horse gain weight. by the American Association of Equine Practitioners for caring for starved/emaciated horses. The guidelines can be found here: https://www.aaep.org/pdfs/rescue_retirement_guidelines.pdf. Introducing feeds too quickly into the diets of these horses can result in ‘refeeding syndrome’ and death. Step 4: Free choice forage Weight gain occurs when the amount of calories provided in the horse’s diet exceeds the amount of calories the horse ‘needs’ on a daily basis – the excess calories are stored by the horse and thus contribute to weight gain. Many horses have problems gaining weight simply because they aren’t being fed enough to gain weight. After addressing worms, teeth and health, the most important feeding step when you

want a horse to gain weight is to provide as much pasture or grass/meadow hay as the horse can eat. You can do this by either giving your horse 24 hour access to pasture or by feeding just enough hay that a little is left over each day. Step 5: Lucerne (alfalfa) Feed lucerne hay. Lucerne is a high energy forage and makes a valuable contribution to raising a horse’s calorie intake above their daily requirement to encourage weight gain. Lucerne will also provide your horse with good quality protein which will facilitate muscle development. This is particularly important if your horse suffered muscle wastage at the time weight loss occurred. It is difficult to make a recommendation as to how much lucerne should be fed as each horse’s requirement will vary depending on the degree of weight gain required, their temperament and the quality of hay being fed. Between 0.5 kg and 1 kg of lucerne hay per 100 kg body weight per day is a good place to start. Step 6: High energy feeds Add high energy feedstuffs to your horse’s diet. If the desired rate of weight gain is not achieved after implementing the steps above, your horse still requires additional calories over and above that provided by the pasture and hay being fed. To increase your horse’s calorie intake even further you now have three high energy feed options to consider adding to your horse’s diet. These are: Continued page 15

A balanced diet is crucial for horse weight gain From Page 14

begin riding it. You may still find that a well educated horse becomes a little more difficult to handle when being fed a high energy weight gain diet. In this case, altering the types of feeds you are using may help. The high energy fibrous feeds and high fat feeds and oils tend to have the ability to promote weight gain without having as much effect on their behaviour. But this isn’t always the case so you still need to be careful.

1. High energy fibres—including soybean hulls, copra meal and sugarbeet pulp. These feedstuffs are similar to pasture and hay, however the fibre they contain is more readily digested by the bacteria in the hindgut meaning they contain a similar amount of calories as cereal grains. These feeds are particularly well suited to horses that become excitable and hyperactive when fed grain. 2. Cereal grains and grain based feeds—cereal grains are well known as being high energy feeds and are useful in the diet of horses that need to gain weight. However some grains and grain based feeds are more suitable than others from a weight gain perspective. When selecting grains to feed to encourage weight gain it is critical that the starch within the grain is digested in the small intestine. Grains that are digested in the small intestine will provide your horse with more calories. Grains will also ensure your horse avoids problems with hindgut acidosis which can cause laminitis and will also reduce the amount of energy your horse can extract from its pasture and hay. To ensure the starch is digested in the small intestine, select grains or grain based feeds that have been cooked (such as via extrusion process Pryde’s use). Cereal grains should not be used in the diets of horses with Cushing’s disease or laminitis. 3. High fat feeds or oils—high fat feeds and oils are the highest energy feedstuffs you can give a horse. Fats and oils hold two major advantages over high energy fibrous feeds and cereal grains. The first is they are energy dense – for example 1 cup of oil contains as many calories as 1.2 kg of oaten chaff. This has obvious advantages for finicky or small horses that won’t eat large meals. The second advantage of high fat feeds and oils is they don’t tend to make a horse as hyperactive as the same quantity of energy supplied in the form of cereal grains. In addition they do not carry the risks of digestive upsets that accompany cereal grains. High

Oils are the highest energy feedstuffs you can feed your horse. fat feeds include rice bran and rice bran based feeds, copra meal, and any of the full fat oilseeds such as soybean and sunflower. The ‘correct’ balance of these feeds is going to depend on your individual horse. (Hint: that’s where FeedXL comes in!) Step 7: Balanced diet Make sure the diet is balanced— if your horse’s diet is unbalanced from a protein, vitamin and mineral perspective it is likely that this will prevent your horse from gaining weight, regardless of how much you are feeding it. Using the FeedXL nutrition software will make sure your horse’s diet is balanced and that there are no deficiencies which may be preventing weight gain. If you’re not already a member, click here to learn more about our plans. A warning about “weight gain” diets Unfortunately when we start feeding our horses a well balanced diet with calories in excess of their requirements, they tend to try and find gainful employment for all their new found energy which often results in unruly, undisciplined and at times dangerous behaviour when we ride them. The question then is, how do you feed your horse for weight gain without having them trying to kill you when you ride them? The answer to this million dollar question is … you can’t, unless your horse is well disciplined to begin with. If you own a horse that you can only just control when it is not being fed for weight gain, then

you should not expect that you will be able to feed it gross amounts of feed to encourage weight gain and still ride it safely, because it is just not going to happen. The golden rule is education first, feeding for weight gain second. The exception to this rule is when you have an emaciated horse that needs to be fed to gain weight before you can

When will your horse start to gain weight You should not expect that your horse will instantly begin to gain weight once you have placed him on a ‘weight gain diet’. Some horses and particularly those who have come from an emaciated state will have internal damage caused by weight loss that they must repair before visible weight gain will occur. Even if this is not the case visible weight gain may take weeks to appear. In short, make sure your horse is healthy, develop and feed a well balanced diet using your preferred ingredients, don’t skimp on feeding hay and be patient.

The high risk posed by laminitis By Dr MATTHEW MACKEE Laminitis is a condition that unfortunately, every equine veterinarian and many horse owners will come across when treating and owning horses. This is true especially in areas like the NSW Northern Rivers Region, where lush green grass is generally available year-round. Laminitis is a severe and occasionally fatal condition where the intricate micro-structures that are responsible for suspending the horses body weight become inflamed. Inflammation to the laminae can occur due to three main causes: Endocrinological/ Dietary, Toxic/ Septic or Mechanical. This article provides a brief guideline on what an owner can do with an acute laminitic horse and how to prevent further episodes in the future. Acute Laminitis What does acute laminitis look like? Acute laminitis may be seen in the form of: - Stiffness; - Short-stepping in front; - “Saw-horse” stance – weight transferring off the front feet towards the back; - Painful when turning; - Weight shifting (spending short periods of time resting each limb) - Dull/ changed demeanour.

Horses affected by laminitis need to be restricted from grazing - grass is the enemy. What does acute laminitis feel like? A horse owner may also be able to feel when a horse has acute laminitis. For example, you may be able to feel a digital pulse. If you are unsure how to do this, then consult your veterinarian for assistance. You can also check if there is heat in the feet by placing the back of your hand over the coronary band and proximal dorsal hoof wall. My horse looks like it has laminitis what should I do? The first step is to feel for digital pulses, heat and look for the common presenting signs. Then it is important that you call your vet-

erinarian as soon as possible. Your veterinarian may prescribe anti-inflammatory medications to aid in reducing inflammation and provide pain relief. Until you are able to consult your veterinarian, it is important that you remove your horse from having access to grass or its current diet. Your horse will be most comfortable if placed in soft bedding. Sand or deep shavings are most the effective types of bedding for a laminitic horse. You can also ice your horse’s feet for 15 – 20minute intervals using a simple large water bucket with ice water reaching up to the coronary bands. Continued page 17

How to take your horse's digital pulse The digital pulse is the pulse flowing through the artery to the hoof and is a useful tool in determining if a horse has inflammation in the hoof capsule How to check your horse's digital pulse Bend down at the side of your horse's nearside front leg, and put your index finger around the left side of the fetlock joint at its lower edge. Press your fingers, on the side of the fetlock joint, you will feel a cordlike structure (consisting of vein, artery, and nerve) Apply pressure for 5 to 10 seconds until you feel a pulse. ( If you can't find a pulse, adjust the amount of pressure you're placing . If you press too hard, you'll cut off blood flow-therefore the pulse. If you press too softly, you won't create enough resistance to feel the pulse at all.) Now you need to determine whether your horse's digital pulse is throbbing abnormally or not. It helps to know what a healthy pulse feels like-but you can't always find a pulse on a healthy leg/hoof. It might be too faint. On the other hand, you'll know he has a problem if you can easily find his digital pulse. Repeat on your horse's other three legs to compare pulse. Page 16

Preventing laminitis in the future From Page 16 In order to prevent laminitis in the future, your veterinarian may recommend some testing. It is important to determine whether your horse has an endocrinological disorder. For example, a simple blood test can determine a diagnosis of Pituitary Pars Intermedia Disorder (Cushing’s Syndrome), commonly seen in horses older than 15 years of age. A fasting (>6 hours) basal blood insulin test may also determine whether your horse has equine metabolic syndrome or insulin dysregulation. Managing the diet of a laminitis prone horse is crucial for future prevention and should be discussed with your veterinarian. An overabundance of grass is the number one cause of acute laminitis (particularly in the NSW Northern Rivers region). Restricting access to grazing can assist in managing and prevention of laminitis. Grass is lower risk from dark to 10am in the morning and therefore, this time of the day is a suitable time to allow grazing. When trying to prevent laminitis, you should avoid feeding your horse grain, and wheaten or oaten hay (or chaff). You may be able to feed lucerne or lowgrade grassy hay that has been soaked for a minimum of one hour with the remaining “sugar-water” drained away. You can also check with your veterinarian if

Stand your horse in buckets of ice to help reduce early signs of inflammation hoof supplements would be beneficial. Another important facet of laminitis management is remedial farriery. Your farrier and veterinarian should work closely together to ensure your horses feet obtain the best supportive care possible. Your veterinarian may also recommend obtaining radiographs of the feet to assess secondary conformational changes that can occur due to laminae inflammation. Take home messages Laminitis is relatively common in the equine world with some reports estimating that it affects 15% of the total horse population at some stage in their life.

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com -

With this in mind, the key to reducing the long-terms effects of laminitis on your horse is early recognition and early treatment. It is important to remember: - Listen to your veterinarian and farrier and follow their instructions carefully, as compliance is the number one issue with managing laminitic horses; - Use cryotherapy (standing your horse in buckets of ice) to reduce early signs of inflammation and preventing secondary structural changes causing long-term hoof structural damage; - Restrict grazing, “Grass is the enemy

What is the best diet for ulcer By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip Nut Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist ©2020 Hi Form Australia Pty Ltd

It has been proven that the most effective way to manage ulcers in horses is via nutrition. The right balance of nutrition can minimise the risk of ulcer formation, so putting a well-balanced high roughage diet into place will not only improve your horse's digestive health but support the gut microbiome. Providing a high percentage and a quality roughage-based diet will assist in stimulating saliva production and may help reduce occurrences of ulcers. Feeding alfalfa hay is one of the best options to reduce the risk of ulcers in horses. Alfalfa is high in calcium and protein and this may act as a buffer against gastric acid. The longer the stem hay the more advantageous it will be for your horse as this encourages the horse to chew the feed at a normal rate. Horses must be fed a minimum of 1 to 1.5% of their body weight during the day. If you are feeding a hard feed to your horse, make sure at the same time you are providing plenty of alfalfa hay. If you own a high performance horse and they are being fed a high energy diet, feeding quality alfalfa hay will be highly beneficial as it will not only provide a readily digestible source of nutrients but you can also reduce the amount of grain being fed per day. Alfalfa is also very low in starch and sugar and has an excellent level of protein. Make sure the horses starch intake per does not exceed 2 g of starch per kilogram of body weight. High-performance horses often require larger amounts of grain per day so it is advisable to feed at least 3 smaller meals per day always remembering that horses have small stomachs and require smaller feeds more often. This will also help to support the horses digestive system longterm.

Regular access to pasture is important for gut health

By providing a smaller feed more often will also reduce the amount of starch being fed per meal. Another extremely important aspect of managing the horse's long-term digestive health is to ensure that they have access to pasture on a regular basis. If this is not possible then I highly recommend slow feeders or hay nets that have small holes. If you are using a round bale, there are round bale hay nets with small holes. Personally, I am not a fan of using these hay nets in a paddock situation as there is a risk that horses could get caught in the hay net. This happened to me personally, my preference is to provide a securely attached hay net but of a larger size with small holes. These can generally accommodate up to 5 biscuits of hay which is ample if you are providing hay overnight or during the day. Horses who are retired or perhaps are good doers again will benefit from this type of management and hay nets with small holes. There has been some evidence to suggest that using a good quality oil could also reduce the risk of the formation of ulcers and supply a good level of cool energy (Cargile et al., 2004), the oil I recommend is always a certified organic, cold pressed

flaxseed oil such as AlphaFlax, not only do you have the potential benefit of reducing the risk of ulcers with a cool energy source but also a high level of omega 3 which will help to reduce inflammation. Feeding oil is a great option as you can reduce a high grain ration and still provide an excellent level of calories and fat. Always make sure that you provide your horse with the correct intake of vitamins and minerals per day. If you have a horse that requires spelling due to an injury, it is important to transition them slowly from a hard feed diet to a high roughage-based diet. Hays like teff hay (pictured below) are quite beneficial as they are very low in sugar and starch and do not contain high levels of protein this combined with alfalfa would be a good option and a nice balance in these cases. continued page 19

Diets and digestive health for your horse From page 18

When you replace sugar and starch with fat you can also have an impact on horses that tend to be tense or ones that have possibly too much energy. Using a good quality oil is also very beneficial for horses that perhaps are being stabled due to an injury. It is not recommended to maintain a high energy grain diet when horses are recovering from injury as the calories provided will be too high for a horse at rest. The same rule applies when your horse has a day off if your horses being fed a hard feed make sure you reduce the level of calories on these days. One the most important parts of managing your horse's digestive health is to ensure that they always have access to fresh clean water. I am not a fan of automatic water troughs; I prefer to know precisely what the horse is consuming per day. Very often automatic water troughs are neglected in relation to cleanliness too. Knowing how much your horse consumes per day is very important. Finally, it has been proven beyond all doubt that what you feed your horse has a bearing on whether they will develop ulcers. Using pro-and prebiotics are also beneficial to support the digestive health and gut microbiome. Bioequus is a Pro and Prebiotic but also has gut soothing herb extracts which is very beneficial when you are managing or treating an ulcer. Just remember the most important aspect of managing your horse's overall health and reducing the risk of ulcers is to provide a high level of roughage every single day. This can be provided in the form of good quality pasture hay, some oaten hay, teff hay and alfalfa hay. Which combination will depend on availability and the type of horse you are feeding. If your horse is working hard and requires extra energy look at the option of including good quality oil alongside a grainbased diet. My most favourite grain is oats, it is lower in starch sugar

Allways ensure your horse has access to plenty of fresh clean water

and protein than other grains and can be fed whole. The other option is to look at a natural based long stem fibre feed such as harryschoice, these feeds are a 100% natural feed that is produced in a certified organic mill. Everything used in these feeds is natural to the horse and all the feeds contain a natural high percentage of roughage. It is the best feed I have found to support the horse's overall health and gut microbiome long-term. Being a complete feed there is no requirement for any other chaffs to be added. Providing good quality hay alongside a feed such as Harryschoice is essential for your horse.

THE ULTIMATE QUESTION... WHAT DO ALL HORSES NEED TO EAT? Horses are herbivorous animals, from the Perissodactyl order of mammals, and can grow into big strong animals with a simple diet. They love to forage and prefer to eat grass as a natural source of nutrition in small amounts steadily throughout the day. Horses are Vegans and that is why TuffRock only makes Vegan products, like Vegan people they can eat a variety of foods and therein lies the challenge. There are so many feeds, supplement, hay and chaff choices are available we are often asked what is the best diet or how do you decide what your horse needs? You can ask your local produce, feed company or veterinarian, always they will listen. The research for the ultimate diet continues all over the world and new products come out all the time, that is why TuffRock supplements are complements to all diets, however there is one answer if you think laterally, all horses need WATER to eat!!

Clean water should be always an everyday priority and available to drink when horses are thirsty. Their other 5 basics need to eat also include carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals however it is the ratio of each input that is the hardest question. I have asked this question of many experts and back in the day famously included Former President of American Judge Coaches, Mr Dale T Barnett, then Murray State University KY Equine Co-Ordinator, I met up with when he was judging Paint Horse Nationals, sponsored by TuffRock in Dubbo 2006. We talked deeply about issues such as Fescue Toxicosis that led us to develop TuffRock GI (featured in our last edition) and also about the 5 basic horse nutritional needs that led us to make TuffRock EJF the most affordable Everyday Equine Joint Formula. Dale and our consultant nutritionists at the time advised TuffRock EJF must be simple and look to make from our volcanic Tuff Conditioner Minerals Plus gut health action for collagen generation as the first step. Then hot synergise with Calcium stabilised Bran and Pollard (Wheat grass) for the other 4 needs including

botanic Vitamin B for calm energy and Omegas for overall joint health. We are continually amazed by how well TuffRock EJF is received by horses of all ages... from the needs of developing weanling or yearlings, incredibly popular for broodmares in their last trimester with several black type winners as a result, performance or show horses and my favourite, those we want simply comfortable in the paddock. My most famous TuffRock EJF Testimonial comes from kicking dirt at an invitational campdraft, wearing my TuffRock cap, old mate next to me proudly points to his granddaughter in the cut-out and we watched it go round. I said congratulations and he said “.. thanks, your products work, of course I asked which TuffRock he likes? Poultice is bloody good however that joint powder (EJF) is amazing, don’t know how only 1 small 50 gram scoop each day keeps my 25 y.o. horse in such great condition. I competed this horse then my daughter and now it helped my granddaughter just make the finals at the age of 8!!

New records at Gold Coast Yearling Sale Supplied by MAGIC MILLIONS A colt by Exceed and Excel sold for $1.2 million and was the top seller of the night at the recent Gold Coast Yearling Sale as records were smashed across the board. One of four seven figure sellers during the famous Saturday night session of the auction, the colt was purchased by James Harron for his colt fund partnership. The colt is the first foal of the American stakes winning Street Boss mare Devious Rumor, a mare purchased by Fernrigg for $220,000 at the 2019 Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale. "He was a colt when we first saw him - he was straight on top of the list," a delighted James Harron said. "He's a very sharp horse with a fantastic attitude. Every time I saw him, he'd handle himself beautifully. "Brilliant shape, great movement. Exceed and Excel needs no introduction and he's out of a good American mare, a speedy mare. "He suits our profile down to the ground." The result was welcomed by the team from Fernrigg Farm, the breeder and seller of the colt. "It was absolutely phenomenal," a beaming Padraig Kelly said. "We knew he had a cracking colt coming up here, it's just unbelievable." "It's an amazing result and I'm so proud of the staff - they've put in the hard yards, it's just so brilliant." Three other yearlings sold for $1 million or more across the Saturday night session. One of the last lots through the ring, Arrowfield Stud's Snitzel colt from Dream Date was purchased by TFI for $1.05 million, while earlier A List Stud's Chris Lee went to an even $1 million for Newgate Farm's Snitzel filly from Divine Centuri. The four seven figure sellers made it 19 for the sale - a record number ever achieved at the Gold Coast - and seven more than in 2021. Across the five day Book One component of the Gold Coast Yearling Sale, a record $228.8 million was traded on 777 lots sold - the same number of yearlings as last year's sale - but with a gross $31.6 million higher. The average price of $294,476 is up over $40,000 on last year, the median soared from $180,000 to $230,000 and the clearance rate currently sits at 93 per cent. Mutual respect in our horsemanship By TANJA KRAUS Mutual respect is a concept or topic that is often overlooked when it comes to our horses - in fact most often people come to horsemanship clinics or lessons saying that “he needs to respect me” or “he doesn't respect me” and wanting that to change - wanting to instill more respect in the horse for them. We don't often hear of people saying that “I need to respect him more”, however this is probably the most vital element of our horsemanship. Let me try to explain. Horsemanship as we teach and study it, is the practice of communicating with our horses in a way that they will understand the most - its roots are based in the study of horses within a herd, how they interact with each other, how their bodies work and the skills, tasks, theories and actions that we perform are based as close to nature as possible. We have all seen horsemanship in its glory the horse that would not float who now self loads at liberty, the horse that would not be caught, now running to his owner to have the halter put on, the nervous flighty horse, now confident, calm and collected. But what about the not so amazing, basic day to day interactions with our horses - this is the stuff that dreams are made of. Knowing I have a confident, calm and willing partner - no matter what situation we find ourselves in. We all want it - but few of

Mutual respect involves understanding your horse and want you from it but also appreciating that the horse also need to understand you.

us are willing to do what it takes to get it. Mutual respect begins with us understanding that if we want a partner, a team mate, a confident, willing mate - we must respect who he is. We must realize that he is a horse - subject to flight and fight, and guided by his instincts. For us to want to have a wild animal as a calm and willing partner, we must respect him enough to interact with him at his level. Mutual respect means knowing that allowing him to rub on me is not beneficial to him - its confusing, for he would not be allowed

tanjakraushorsemanship@gmail.com Page 26

to rub on the leader of the herd, and in fact she would rub on him. Mutual respect means we may have to send him away, even though we really just want to pat him. Mutual respect is not humanizing him - he is a horse, with instincts and a masters degree in body language - he knows more about how you are than you do yourself. So next time you are thinking that he doesn't have enough respect for you - you may need to ask the question do you have enough respect for him ?

TECHNYFLEX riders are on the move Supplied by TECHNYFLEX Stories from sponsored riders Rhys and Jess Stones are looking forward to a busy year competing in major events around the country. "We aren't expecting too many spare weekends," Rhys said. "We've jumping championships at Boneo Park, then there's Canberra and Sydney Royals, Jumping with the Stars in Victoria and the EA Show Horse Nationals." This dynamic husband and wife duo are unique in equestrian circles. Both are successful show riders and both compete at the top level of showjumping. Rhys also spends part of each day breaking in horses at their property in The Oaks, NSW. "Diversity is the key," he said. Recently dressage rider, Victoria Davies, received some exciting news from overseas regarding her stallion Celere who she rode at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo. "He's been recognised and awarded by the Lusitano Portuguese Studbook (APSL) as a recommended sire for dressage,” Victoria said. “He's the only Lusitano in Australasia to achieve this status and, more impressively, the only Lusitano outside of Portugal to gain this title. “To date there are less than 50 recommended for dressage. "It is not given out lightly. "Whilst we didn't receive a medal at Tokyo this prestigious title for Celere is literally gold for me!" Technyflex distributor, Charlotte Price, is an eventing rider and coach running CPM Equestrian and the Tamborine Equine Group (TEG) with her partner, Dale McNab, whose brother, Kevin, was part of the eventing team to win silver at Tokyo. "Kevin and his wife, Emma, are based in the UK," Charlotte said. "They're looking towards a busy competitive season as we are here in Queensland. “We're holding at the end of February a ODE CDN on

the 26 and 27 and on March 6 a Young Horse qualifier. A CCI4* 3DE is scheduled for 38-31 July." Charlotte can be contacted for product and information on 0498 880 901 cpmequestrian@outlook.com Dressage NSW is based in Clarendon, NSW and Technyflex has been sponsoring DNSW for the past eight years. The club's event secretary, Vireena Peacock, reports on its recent competition. "In 2021 because of multiple cancellations due to COVID lockdown and rain only two competitions of the scheduled 10 were able to be run at Clarendon,” Vireena said. “Having our first 2022 competition go ahead in January saw smiles on the faces of riders, judges, volunteers and the organising committee. "Young Horse classes were run with many of the fouryear-olds leaving their properties for the first time and they were beautiful. "Our February competition runs from the 11th to the 14th with an open training day for EA and DNSW members on the 10th. “Classes are scheduled from Preparatory to Grand Prix, as well as Young Horses. March will be a repeat of this program. “The full competition schedule for the year is available on the Clarendon page of the DNSW website. "The volunteer winner in January of a tub of TFX Equine was Katie Stewart from Wilberforce. "Thank you, Technyflex, for your ongoing support." Great news for Nathan Harvey from Special Olympics Queensland who recently advised he had been selected to represent Team Queensland in Equestrian at the 2022 Special Olympics Australia National Games. The Games are the pinnacle of competition in Special Olympics Australia and only come around every four years. This time they'll be held in Launceston, Tasmania from 17-22 October '22. The Equestrian competition will be held in Queensland on the Sunshine Coast from 9 - 14 September 2022.

Arioneo and StableWizard technology partnership Supplied by Stablewizard.com Arioneo, from France, and Australia's StableWizard, pioneers in thoroughbred performance, welfare, and horse health, have established a cooperation to bring advanced technological solutions to the training industry globally. The Arioneo monitoring devices, which capture different active data inputs from horses in training conditions, will be easily integrated digitally on the horse centric StableWizard welfare platform as part of the worldwide cooperation. Arioneo Managing Director and Co-founder Valentin Rapin and StableWizard Co-founder and Head of Research Mark Kay said that the two companies were totally aligned in their commitment to excellence in horse care and producing unique, tailored digital solutions for thoroughbred wellbeing and performance. The high-level quality of data acquired by Arioneo's device, according to Mark Kay, will significantly add to the more than a million data points driving StableWizard's Artificial Intelligence (AI), which supports trainers in having a full and up-todate picture of a horse's condition. “This addition allows us to achieve a full 360-degree horse centric view of all the information

Technological solution support for the country’s leading trainers and thoroughbreds throughout the racing season about each horse, irrespective from where it was generated, displayed in one place through the StableWizard dashboard,” he said. “No other technology offers the level of individualised information on each horse for its lifetime with the intelligent system that can alert to issues and support trainers and their team to care for the horse and nurture its best performance.”. For Valentin Rapin, Australian training operations are among the best in the world, and Arioneo has extensive exposure in most of the

country's top training stables. The StableWizard partnership was a natural and incremental step to help the industry transition into beneficial, bespoke technology. The power of the Arioneo data, that monitors health and analyses physical parameters, will be merged with the multiple data points recorded by the StableWizard platform for each individual horse, resulting in a sophisticated and unprecedented resource for trainers and owners now available globally.

Arioneo already provides over 350 trainers in over 30 countries, and StableWizard’s successful entry into Australia in 2019 saw the technological solution support the country’s leading trainers and thoroughbreds throughout the previous racing season. It will be available globally this year, together with Equimetre (Arioneo’s technology) and data from the StableWizard software. StableWizard, launched in December 2020, is a cloud-based management system providing a simple and highly efficient way to capture, automate, record and report data on thoroughbred racehorses. Created for trainers and carers of horses, with welfare at its core, the system was designed and built in Australia over three years of trials. Arioneo is a LIM Group company specialized in the collection and analysis of performance and health data for athletic horses. Arioneo believes that technology and big data will play a role in the equestrian industry's future. Their mission is to assist industry experts in the investigation of horse performance and well-being via the use of incredibly accurate, scientifically proven equipment and ever-improving technology. From Paddock to Show Ring Words by Alice Clarke Part 1 of 6. More to come in upcoming issues. Time to bring in that pony and transform him into your star… but not sure where you start? Every pony is different and every person has their own way of doing things, but we try to follow the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principal. We break it down into 6 categories which we will go through in the next 5 issues in coming months. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Maintenance Feeding Housing/Rugging Work/Training Show Gear for Horse/Rider Presentation

MAINTENANCE This is important, the basics when owning any horse and addressing your duty of care. These principals are a must before you start your show preparation and be done on a regular basis. No amount of money or work will transform your pony if you don’t practice the basics of pony/horse care. WORMING Your horse needs to be on a regular worming program appropriate to its age and environment. Young-stock are particularly susceptible to worm burdens so if your unsure your local vet can help you. It’s also a good

idea to rotate using different brands or wormer. It’s been proven over time the worms can become resistant to the same wormer. HOOF CARE As the old saying goes, no hoof, no horse. It is critical to ensure your horses hooves are maintained regularly. ,QFRUUHFW KRRI FDUH FDQ DIIHFW PRYHPHQW FRQ¿UPDWLRQ and soundness. EQUINE DENTISTY A horses teeth continue to grow throughout it’s lifetime. To maintain optimal food absorption and to ensure comfort during its work your horse needs to be seen by D YHW RU TXDOL¿HG HTXLQH GHQWLVW RQ D UHJXODU EDVHV HANDLING This might sound silly but your pony must have basic handling. You should be able to catch it, lead it, brush it all over and handle it safely. Every time you interact with your pony you are in fact teaching it. It’s good to practice and teach your horse to stand still and tie up quietly for periods of time. This is important when it comes time for clipping and show prepping your horse as we will discuss in more detail in a later issue. Last but not least. It is important to spend this initial time with your equine building a relationship and trust, a true partnership. Just remember, horses are masters of body language not the English language. Heartbreaking sale as Shae takes to new adventures. CHOSEN ONE needs no introduction to the show ring , winning many broad sashes and two Garryowen wins, we absolutely adore this boy and he has been the best first hack for Shae, being the simplest and quietest hack, requiring no plugs and little if no work down before any show or any time off. Qualified for next year’s Royals and qualified for Interschool nationals 2021. An absolute gentleman, always giving his all and being so reliable and successful. Will only be sold to the best of homes as only selling due to Shae taking on new ventures and hasn’t enough time, absolutely no fault of his own. Price is negotiable, fabulous home is not. Price: $ POA 16.2 hh Reg: EA | SHC Brown Gelding Sire: Teofilo Dam: I Am Woman Heartbreaking sale due to new adventures for Ava. We simply adore this boy and I would happily keep him for myself (with tears as I post) but he really is way too special not to be shown to his full potential. Spider has been more successful than we could have hoped for in such a short period of time and was to be Ava’s “Garryowen” horse. He is the most gorgeous character, incredible to ride, has movement to die for, with an extravagant trot, a walk with a purpose and a canter to sit on all day. He has a superb temperament, no plugs and less than 20 minutes warm up for the biggest atmosphere shows. Spide takes everything in his stride and he is yet to really make his mark in the ring…..and in the right hands we are certain he will! Spider will only be sold to the most perfect home and will suit the most competitive of stables. He is currently schooling at elementary but not far off a medium test. 100% sound & drug free. Any vet check welcome, easy to shoe, catch, float and clip. Only genuine enquiries need call. Contact: Alannah Halloran Ph: 0438 661 060

Josie has been part of our family since she was 3 months old. She was broken in and taken along slowly and correctly. Due to my pregnancy, she commenced her showing career at the end of last year with a showing family in Adelaide. Her first show (2020 SHC of SA HOTY) she won champion preliminary show hunter pony, came reserve champion in her newcomer show hunter pony, and 6th in the child’s show hunter pony (did not start in her open). Since then, she has had numerous placings in the child’s show hunter pony grand national qualifying classes - Including a 3rd at the rising star show and qualified for Adelaide Royal Show 2021. Although she has been ridden by many different child riders and is quiet to ride, she is still green. She has a butter soft mouth and requires soft hands when ridden. She can be marey on the ground. She is good to catch, trim, clip, plait, float. With an experienced home, she will be an extremely competitive hunter of the future. She is only offered to the best of homes. Association offers Standardbreds a new lease of life Supplied by THE STANDARDBRED ASSOCIATION QUEENSLAND The Standardbred Association Queensland Inc (SAQ) was founded in 1998, and was primarily established as the States Standardbred Breed Society. It became evident that there was a shortfall for opportunities for Standardbreds retiring from racing, with a majority finding themselves in slaughter yards. In 2002, the SAQ started their Adoption and Rehoming Program, which was the first not for profit association in Queensland to focus specifically on retraining and rehoming retired racehorses. Over the past 20 years, the program has steadily grown along with the racing industry’s awareness of the importance of retirement options for its retired athletes, and we have rehomed almost 1300 Standardbreds through our adoption program. The SAQ aims to increase the demand for retired Standardbred racehorses as pleasure and performance horses. This is being done through the SAQ Standardbred Horse Placement Program. Standardbred placement has strict criteria From page 25 • Organised Trail Rides, weekend trips, and other social events • Registration of Pleasure and Performance Standardbreds and Partbred Standardbreds • Annual Members State High Point Awards • Sponsorship of Annual Pony Club Award & Endurance Performance Standardbred Award How does the SAQ Horse Placement Program work? The SAQ currently has members wanting to adopt a Standardbred. The horse does not need to be started under saddle prior to adoption and the SAQ has contacts for members to forward their Standardbreds to, if they are not confident enough to start the horse under saddle themselves. All Adopters are required to complete an Adoption Application form and are interviewed to determine suitability. To ensure we find the perfect match for a horse through our Horse Placement Program, only applicants fitting the following criteria will be considered: • Aged 18 years or over

• The horse will reside at a property where they are inspected daily • Must have suitable property and containment facilities for the horse • Allow a property and horse inspection when required or supply photographs of property prior to or after the adoption. Horses may be inspected at any time until the completion of the Adoption Contract Period • Demonstrate capacity to train and handle horses or be guided by a suitably qualified instructor or trainer • Be committed to undertake all veterinary and husbandry requirements for the horse and cover all costs associated with ongoing care and treatment of the horse. If a person’s adoption application and interview meets our adoption criteria, the person is then referred to owners of suitably matched horses and are encouraged to meet with the owner and horse to determine if they would like to adopt the horse. Once a suitable horse has been identified, the person completes an Adoption and Wellbeing

Contract which outlines all the obligations which need to be followed during the 12-month adoption period. These obligations include: • During the Term of the Adoption, the adopter is responsible for the health, wellbeing and on-going care of the horse. This includes feeding, watering, regular worming, regular shoeing or trimming of hooves by a farrier, annual vaccinations, dentistry by a qualified horse dentist/vet, vet costs when required, and rugging if necessary. • Spot welfare checks of the adopted horse can be performed at any time by a registered SAQ welfare officer during the Term of the Adoption. • At three months, the adopter will be responsible for sending a minimum of four full body photos of the adopted horse along with a report regarding the wellbeing and progress of the horse. • At six months and 12 months the adopter will be responsible for having a written “Wellbeing Check” (vet check) performed by a veterinarian and forwarded to the Association. • If at the end of the 12 month

Term of the Adoption, all contractual obligations are met on time by the adopter, and the Association committee members are satisfied that the horse is not neglected and/or mistreated in any way, the Association will complete a Transfer of Ownership, and on receipt of this, the adopter will become the owner of the horse, and then continue without further interference from the Association. • If at any time the Association considers the horse to be neglected, mistreated or inadequately cared for, or the adopter fails to have the required vet checks performed or breaks any of the terms or conditions of the adoption contract, the Association maintains the right to remove the horse from the premises and the adoption contract will be terminated. • If at any stage though the Term of the Adoption, the adopter is unhappy with the horse for any reason, or is unable to continue caring for the horse, the adopter must contact the Association and the horse will be transferred to a new adoption home as soon as possible.

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin. These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
