The Horse Report

Sensory hair ruling transition period extended By EQUESTRIAN QUEENSLAND In August 2021, the EA Board voted to implement the recent FEI rule to ban the trimming of horse sensory hairs across all EA national disciplines in the interests of horse welfare. Given circumstances, such as the impact of COVID-19 on some States not being able to host events allowing sufficient time for all members to be educated on the ruling and the delay from the FEI on publishing guidelines for the implementation of the rule, the EA Board have recently voted to extend the transition period until 1 July 2022. The penalty of disqualification will not be applied during this extended transition period and the rule will come into full effect as of 1 July 2022. For clarification and understanding the full rule reads as per the FEI Veterinary Regulations Article 1004 1(i): Horses are not permitted to compete in FEI Events: (i) “If the horse’s sensory hairs have been clipped and/or shaven or in any other way removed unless individual sensory hairs have been removed by a veterinarian to prevent pain or discomfort for

the Horse. Areas of hair that must be clipped, shaven or removed to allow veterinary treatment are exempt from this rule. As of 1 July 2021, Sanction 39 in Annex VI will be applicable.” (Sanction no. 39 as stated in Annex VI - (1004) Clipping, shaving and/or removing sensory hairs - Disqualification of the Horse from the Event.) The FEI define Sensory Hairs

as ‘hard hairs located on the horse’s muzzle and around its eyes, also known as ‘whiskers’ that are used for sensation’. Once the FEI has published guidelines, Equestrian Australia will be working alongside the Discipline Sport Committees to help educate athletes, coaches and officials on the implementation of the FEI rule for those national disciplines.

As of 1 July 2022, this ruling will apply to any EA event, any athlete and horse combination where it is found that the horse has had its sensory hairs clipped or shaved will be disqualified from the entire event.

The Horse Report

How do horses contract tetanus? By ZOETIS AUSTRALIA Tetanus, is an often-fatal bacterial disease caused by the organism Clostridium tetani, which is found in soil and droppings. It’s found all over the world and can affect humans as well as horses. The bacterium can survive as spores in the environment for long periods of time and while it is in the soil, it’s harmless. However, the bacteria can enter the body through wounds, particularly puncture wounds, if the wound is dirty. The tetanus bacteria do not need oxygen (they are classified as ‘anaerobic’ bacteria) and so they multiply rapidly in the damaged tissues at the site of the injury. The bacteria produce a powerful nerve toxin, causing distressing symptoms and death in about 80% of cases. Signs of Tetanus There may be a delay of one to three weeks after infection before symptoms of tetanus appear. More commonly, symptoms will appear after nine or 10 days. Tetanus attacks the horse’s central nervous system. The bacteria produce a powerful nerve toxin, which causes many muscles of the body to spasm uncontrollably, so the first sign of a problem may be a change in the way your horse moves and stands at rest.

Tetanus is totally and easily preventable by regular vaccination. Affected horses will have progressive muscle stiffness, causing: - The tail to stiffen and stand straight out. - The ears to stand erect. - An anxious facial expression caused by facial muscle stiffness – your horse may look like it is “smiling” strangely. - Eating difficulties. Tetanus also results in another tell-tale sign – the third eyelid goes into spasm and protrudes across the eye, especially when the

horse is startled. Over time, more and more muscles go into spasm. The horse will have convulsions and respiratory failure. Within a few days of the first signs appearing, about 80% of horses will die. If you suspect your horse has tetanus, contact your vet immediately as early treatment offers the only hope of survival. continued page 7

The Horse Report

It’s recommended to vaccinate against tetanus From page 6 Risk of Tetanus The risk of tetanus is pretty much everywhere as the organism that causes it, Clostridium tetani, lives in soil and manure and it enters the body through wounds. Horses are particularly at risk because of their environment and tendency to injure themselves. The good news, however, is that tetanus is not contagious, so it is not passed from horse to horse. Sources of contamination Horses can become infected through gastric or intestinal ulcers after eating contaminated soil or droppings. Wounds, especially deep wounds, are a key source of infection. Common sites of infection are the soles of the horse’s feet, although even a simple thorn prick can allow the bacteria to enter the body. Surgical wounds are another possible source of entry for the bacteria. Foals can become infected via their navel where the umbilical cord was attached. The mare’s reproductive tract may also become infected, if it’s damaged or the placenta is retained. Minimising risk Tetanus can be avoided with vaccination. Ensure your mares are well-vaccinated before having a foal: foals may not respond to vaccines early in life so it is important they receive protection via their mother’s milk. Remember that humans can get tetanus too, so ensure your own tetanus vaccination is up-to-date.

The bacterial spore that causes Tetanus can enter the body through any wound.

doses no less than four weeks apart. The Equine Infectious Disease Advisory Board recommends a booster dose every 12 months to ensure maximum protection against Tetanus. For immediate short-term prevention of tetanus, your vet may suggest an Equivac® TAT injection. Your horse can get both immediate prevention and long-lasting protection with simultaneous injections of both of Equivac® TAT and Equivac® T. If suitable, your vet may suggest Equivac® 2 in 1, a combination injection that protects against strangles as well as tetanus. For more information on Tetanus contact your vet or Visit www.health4horses.com.au

Myth Busting Myth: Tetanus is straightforward to treat. This is untrue: about 80% of infected horses die from tetanus. If diagnosed early, your vet may treat your horse with large doses of antibiotics, and administer the tetanus antitoxin injection. Sadly, however, owners are still faced with having to euthanase their horse on humane grounds. Myth: Tetanus is caused by rusty nails or rusty fences When your horse steps on a rusty nail or is scratched by a rusty barbed wire fence, it is at risk of tetanus, but that’s not because of the rust; it’s because of the tetanus spores on the nail or the fence.

Vaccination with Equivac® T or Equivac 2in1 Tetanus is a totally and easily preventable disease. Vaccination with ‘tetanus toxoid’ should be used for all horses and ponies. You can vaccinate your horse against tetanus with Equivac® T or Equivac® 2 in 1, available from your vet. Your horse can get this vaccination from three months of age. If using Equivac T, the primary course is two

The Horse Report

The pros and cons of grasses for horses By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic If you've ever been on to FeedXL or read information about 'bighead' and oxalates in pastures, you'll have come across the terms "C3" and "C4" grasses. But when it comes to different grasses, what do these terms really mean? It's all about the way the plants photosynthesize. Photosynthesis is the process that plants use to convert the energy from sunlight, carbon dioxide and water into energy for plant growth. The by-product of photosynthesis is, luckily for us, oxygen. The vast majority of plants on earth use C3 photosynthesis. C4 plants are higher in fibre than C3 plants because C4 photosynthesis must occur in the 'dark' and requires a 'wall' between different parts of the plant's energy making factory. Therefore, the cells inside C4 plants contain more fibrous walls and some cell structures not present in C3 plants. C3 plants produce sucrose and store their energy as fructan whereas C4 plants contain higher levels of glucose and store it in the form of starch. These differences in the biochemistry of photosynthesis cause C3 plants to be generally higher in non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) and water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) than C4 plants. C3 plants perform best in cooler, moist conditions with moderate sunlight and tend to be temperate plants (ryegrass, clover, wheat, barley, oats) and C4 plants evolved in warm, strong sunlight areas of the tropics (sugarcane, corn, sorghum, Rhodes grass, paspalum). C4 Grasses - Cons C4 plants have an undeservedly poor reputation in the horse world because some C4 grass species contain high levels of oxalates. Oxalates act like magnets for calcium ions in the stew inside the gut. Calcium binds strongly to oxalate molecules like spilt nails bind to a strong magnet. The calcium that is bound to the oxalate molecule continues on through the digestive tract to be passed in manure. The calcium bound to the oxalate molecules

Adequate supplementation is required for horse grazing certain grasses is not bioavailable - it cannot pass through the gut wall and into the horse's bloodstream to be transported to cells throughout the body. This means that horses grazing on high oxalate pasture can become calcium deficient, even when they eat their daily recommended intake of calcium. This can put horses at risk of developing diseases associated with calcium and phosphorous/magnesium imbalances such as equine nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism also known as 'bighead.' However, adequate calcium supplementation can overcome the oxalate problem to allow horses to safely graze oxalate pastures long-term. Scientists have known since the early 1980s and probably at least a decade earlier that feeding supplementary dietary inorganic sources of calcium and phosphorous (ag lime and DCP) successfully controls bighead disease in horses grazing high oxalate pastures. Much of the published work was conducted by McKenzie and colleagues in Queensland. Species of high oxalate grasses that most commonly occur in horse paddocks in the northern half of Australia are Buffel Grass,

Setaria, Green Panic, Humidicola, Para, Signal and Pangola grasses. Kikuyu is another high oxalate species which grows well in coastal areas from northern Australia right down the eastern coast and into north-eastern Tasmania. An adequate amount of calcium supplementation for a horse grazing only high oxalate pasture and not being fed any hay or hard feed is often significantly more than horse owners have traditionally given. A 500kg horse could need between 150 and 300 grams per day (half to one metric cup) of calcium supplement, depending on the amount of calcium and of oxalate naturally occurring in the pasture. Failure to provide adequate supplementation has led to a perception that inorganic calcium supplements don't 'work' to prevent bighead. Both inorganic and organic (chelated) forms of calcium are effective provided that they are supplemented in adequate amounts. Since there are many variables to be considered in calculating supplementation needs, advice from a qualified nutritionist experienced in tropical equine nutrition is recommended. Continued page 11

Pastures need added supplementation From page 10 C4 Grasses - Pros C4 plants are more energy efficient than their C3 cousins and grow much faster. The optimum temperature for growth of C4 plants is over 30 degrees, whereas C3 plants prefer 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. C4 plants have a higher water use efficiency than C3 plants and perform well in subtropical and tropical climates. C3 Grasses - Cons Many of the high producing C3 grasses introduced last century from Europe, the UK and USA for temperate sheep and cattle production have succeeded so well in the Australian climate that they are now naturalized species. These grass species have been bred to produce rapid growth of the high energy (calorie), high protein feed needed for efficient milk and meat production. The carbohydrate (sugar and starch) levels of ryegrass and some other introduced grasses, particularly C3 species, are too high for horses who evolved to graze lower quality roughages. Scientists have discovered that the main trigger for laminitis in grazing horses is the spike in blood insulin caused by grazing pastures with high sugar and starch levels. Horses rapidly gain weight on high carbohydrate pastures which puts them at risk of equine metabolic disease, insulin resistance and laminitis. Sudden changes in grass quality and availability especially during spring and autumn can disrupt the equine gut microbiome which causes diarrhea and may lead to colic and laminitis. C3 Grasses - Pros Many native and some introduced C3 grasses are slower growing and contain lower sugar and starch levels, making them safe and productive horse pastures in temperate regions. Pastures with a small proportion of high producing C3 grasses more easily maintain body condition on hard keepers and sustain growth in young horses. Which grass is best for me? Really, it's a matter of horses for courses. Your climate and geographical location will be a major factor in determining whether you can grow C3 or C4 grasses at different times of the year. The higher fibre levels in C4 plants generally correlates with

Know what grasses are in your pasture and add hays feeds and supplements accordingly

a lower level of calories per kilogram - an advantage for feeding easy-keepers but a disadvantage if you're trying hard to put weight on a horse. C3 plants tend to pose more of a problem for laminitis prone horses but diligence is always required for founder management no matter what type of pasture you have. Horses prone to laminitis will need very careful management especially during spring and autumn. Restricted intake via use of grazing muzzles and removal from grass with or without limited turnout time are necessary management tools. Replace fresh grass with low calorie hay (which may be soaked to remove calories), minimize hard feeds to just enough to provide essential vitamins, minerals and prebiotics designed to improve insulin sensitivity. Consider the use of hindgut buffers and probiotic live yeast to help maintain a more stable hind gut pH. Many horse owners recognise that horses grazing poor quality pasture or on poor soils need mineral supplementation, but it is not well understood that even the best quality pasture it is possible to grow anywhere in the

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com

world does not give a horse the ideal balance of minerals for optimum nutrition. No matter where you or live or how good or bad your grazing

is, all horses need minerals supplemented through vitamin and mineral fortified pre-mixed hard feeds or balancer pellets/powders.

Choosing horse friendly pastures When planting horse friendly pastures in temperate zones choose a mix of slower growing, higher fibre, lower nutrient varieties such as Cocksfoot, Browntop Bentgrass, Yorkshire Fog, Crested Dogtail Grass Prairie Grass and Australian native grasses. Wallaby Grass, Native Wheatgrass, Native Bluegrass and Weeping Grass are amongst the best suited to grazing. Species for horse-friendly pastures in tropical areas include Rhodes Grass (this is a high producing, low oxalate C4 grass) and native grasses such as Bluegrass, Native Wheatgrass, Mitchell Grass, Kangaroo and Wallaby Grass.

Top 10 Apple Cider Vinegar for Horses 8. Treat hoof problems Use ACV to care for minor hoof ailments including bruises and abscesses. You can also use apple cider vinegar for horses with thrush. Mix 1/4 cup of ACV in 1 litre of water to soak a hoof or use it undiluted in a spray bottle.

Discover the benefits of apple cider vinegar for horses. Below are the Top 10 Uses 1. Natural insect control When horses ingest ACV daily it causes higher levels of thiamine (vitamin B1) to be excreted through their skin, Optimum levels of B vitamins discourage all types of insects including flies and mosquitoes It also makes an effective and inexpensive fly spray. 2. Improves digestion ACV works to acidify the stomach for better digestion, absorption of minerals and help protect your horse against bacteria, parasites and water-borne diseases, and even ulcers. Research has also shown that it can slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, which is helpful for those founder-prone ponies/horses that are sensitive to sugar. Because of this, using apple cider vinegar for horses with laminitis can help to reduce the risk of it reoccurring, along with proper care. 3. Helps prevent intestinal stones (enteroliths) An alkaline environment in the horse's digestive tract can cause stones to grow to the point of causing dangerous obstructions. The acidifying effect of ACV helps dissolve enteroliths, or ideally prevent them. 4. Mane & tail conditioner Add 1 cup of ACV to a bucket of water for the final rinse of your horse's mane & tail. This will leave it feelingly smooth and silky

Page 12

9. Weed killer If you don't like the idea of spraying harmful chemicals all over your fields then ACV is a great alternative.

5. Disguise water while traveling If your horse is accustomed to the taste of ACV, bring some along on your next road trip and they'll happily drink unfamiliar water. 6. Wound treatment Spraying fungus, burns, skin infections and other wounds with diluted ACV is a great way to speed healing time by helping to help keep bacteria and insects away. 7. Ease arthritis symptoms Both horses and humans have benefited from ACV to help control arthritis joint pain and stiffness. When fed daily ACV, works to remove toxins, restore pH balance and increase crucial minerals, all of which improves joint health.

10. Clean blankets & pads Add some ACV to the rinse water for your saddle pads, blankets and polo wraps. It will help remove soap residue which is a nice benefit for thin-skinned horses that are prone to irritation. How to Feed Apple Cider Vinegar to Horses For maximum benefits, it’s recommend that you feed approximately 20-50 mls of ACV per day. It should be diluted 50/50 with water and added your horse's usual feed. An added bonus to adding ACV to your horses feed is that it will help keep flies away from your horses feed bin. As with any adjustments to your horses feeding program, always make gradual changes and introduce new feeds and feed additives slowly, ideally over a two week period.

Tips on how to reduce the risk of colic By Dr NERIDA RICHARDS

Signs of colic

It’s a word that sends cold shivers up every horse owner’s spine, and for good reason. Colic is the single biggest killer of horses worldwide. I lost my beautiful CoaCoa to this horrid condition… with their gastrointestinal tract the way it is, horses are simply prone to developing all sorts of problems with their gut. But there are certain conditions that will increase the risk of colic. So there are things we can do to reduce the risk of colic. Research presented at the European Equine Health & Nutrition Congress, March 2017 (by Lindroth et al) found the following: Change of water source and/or a change of roughage more than twice (though the time period is not specific) doubled the risk of colic. Horses fed concentrates three times per day had twice the risk of colic compared to horses not fed any concentrates (amounts were not specified though) Here is the really useful bit: For every 1 kg increase in

The signs of colic vary from case to case, but studies have shown that of horses with colic: - 44% roll - 43% paw continuously or intermittently - 29% lie down for long periods

roughage (forage) per 100 kg bodyweight fed per day, the risk of colic dropped by three times. For every 1 kg increase in muesli feed (composition not specified but would think it contains grains) per 100 kg of bodyweight, the risk of colic increased by three times. This makes a whole lot of sense, given the more forage we feed and the less concentrate, the closer we are to a horse’s natural diet. And when we can keep them closer to their natural diet, their gut and overall health is almost always much better. So more hay, less grain, less risk

of colic! Do you have a question or comment? Do you need help with feeding? FeedXL would love to welcome you to our FeedXL Horse Nutrition Facebook Group. Crofton weed (Ageratina adenophora) Supplied by DPI NSW How does this weed affect you? Crofton weed is a rapid-spreading weed that has become a nuisance in many areas along the eastern coast of Australia. It is particularly invasive on cleared land that is not grazed, such as public reserves and causes particular problems for horse owners. Once established, seedlings tolerate shade and grow rapidly. In this way, small infestations of Crofton weed rapidly increase in size unless controlled. Crofton weed reduces the ecological value of bush land, lowers crop yields and reduces the carrying capacity of grazing land. The weed spread rapidly during the 1940s and 1950s and it was reported that in some areas dairy farmers and banana growers abandoned their holdings. The area of Crofton weed infestation has now been substantially reduced through control strategies. It is poisonous to horses Horses may preferentially graze the plant even when ample feed

is available. Access to Crofton weed for as little as eight weeks can cause sickness. The first sign of Crofton weed poisoning is coughing, made more pronounced by exercise. If horses are not removed from infested areas, further lung and possible heart damage occurs, leading to shortness of breath even when at rest. Death from respiratory failure is the eventual result, with affected horses often suddenly collapsing and dying during work. Treatment of Crofton weed poisoning is unlikely to reverse the

damage, so early detection of poisoning and removal from the weed infestation is essential. If you suspect poisoning, seek veterinary advice. Poisoned horses may never again be capable of work. It is possible that Crofton weed is at its most poisonous during or soon after flowering. Pollen inhalation could be a factor in poisoning. What does it look like? Crofton weed is a member of the Asteraceae or daisy family. It is an erect, perennial shrub with

numerous chocolate-brown woody stems emanating from an underground crown and reaching a height of 1–2 m. It has broad, slightly crinkled, trowel-shaped, toothed leaves with chocolate-coloured petioles (leaf stems). It produces white flowers in spring. Control Crofton weed can be controlled by a combination of slashing and chemical application. After slashing, the weed is allowed to regrow to a height of 15–40 cm and then sprayed with herbicide.

THE ULTIMATE QUESTION... WHAT DO ALL HORSES NEED TO EAT? Horses are herbivorous animals, from the Perissodactyl order of mammals, and can grow into big strong animals with a simple diet. They love to forage and prefer to eat grass as a natural source of nutrition in small amounts steadily throughout the day. Horses are Vegans and that is why TuffRock only makes Vegan products, like Vegan people they can eat a variety of foods and therein lies the challenge. There are so many feeds, supplement, hay and chaff choices are available we are often asked what is the best diet or how do you decide what your horse needs? You can ask your local produce, feed company or veterinarian, always they will listen. The research for the ultimate diet continues all over the world and new products come out all the time, that is why TuffRock supplements are complements to all diets, however there is one answer if you think laterally, all horses need WATER to eat!!

Page 18

Clean water should be always an everyday priority and available to drink when horses are thirsty. Their other 5 basics need to eat also include carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals however it is the ratio of each input that is the hardest question. I have asked this question of many experts and back in the day famously included Former President of American Judge Coaches, Mr Dale T Barnett, then Murray State University KY Equine Co-Ordinator, I met up with when he was judging Paint Horse Nationals, sponsored by TuffRock in Dubbo 2006. We talked deeply about issues such as Fescue Toxicosis that led us to develop TuffRock GI (featured in our last edition) and also about the 5 basic horse nutritional needs that led us to make TuffRock EJF the most affordable Everyday Equine Joint Formula. Dale and our consultant nutritionists at the time advised TuffRock EJF must be simple and look to make from our volcanic Tuff Conditioner Minerals Plus gut health action for collagen generation as the first step. Then hot synergise with Calcium stabilised Bran and Pollard (Wheat grass) for the other 4 needs including

botanic Vitamin B for calm energy and Omegas for overall joint health. We are continually amazed by how well TuffRock EJF is received by horses of all ages... from the needs of developing weanling or yearlings, incredibly popular for broodmares in their last trimester with several black type winners as a result, performance or show horses and my favourite, those we want simply comfortable in the paddock. My most famous TuffRock EJF Testimonial comes from kicking dirt at an invitational campdraft, wearing my TuffRock cap, old mate next to me proudly points to his granddaughter in the cut-out and we watched it go round. I said congratulations and he said “.. thanks, your products work, of course I asked which TuffRock he likes? Poultice is bloody good however that joint powder (EJF) is amazing, don’t know how only 1 small 50 gram scoop each day keeps my 25 y.o. horse in such great condition. I competed this horse then my daughter and now it helped my granddaughter just make the finals at the age of 8!!

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.

These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, environmental management will also so assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

Queensland Bred Champion Does it Again Supplied by MAGIC MILLIOINS Golden Sixty confirmed himself as Hong Kong's champion and one of the best in the world with a record breaking win in HK$26 million Longines International Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin. In making it back to back wins in the rich feature, Golden Sixty also became the most successful racehorse ever in Hong Kong with a 19th win - surpassing three 18 time winners headlined by Silent Witness and Beauty Generation. Quite remarkably Golden Sixty has notched his 19 wins, 16 of which have come in an unbeaten stretch that dates back over two years, from just 20 lifetime starts. The Francis Lui prepared superstar settled around midfield from an inside barrier before getting a split under Vincent Ho in the straight and racing away for the easiest of wins. The Sha Tin crowd roared their approval as the local pin-up performer streaked clear in the most impressive style. "Gate two was a little bit tricky," Ho said. "He doesn't want to be stuck on the inside but eventually the race panned out good and the pace was genuine." "He relaxes very well nowadays he's now six years old, he's mentally a more mature horse - he's even better," Ho added.

Helmet Tagging now required for jumping By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Did you know – Helmet Tagging will be mandatory for all EA Affiliated Jumping events from 1 January 2022. Keep in touch with your local Jumping Club, State Equestrian Branch, and see EA helmet tagging times and days to find out where you can get your helmet tagged ahead of the 2022 jumping season. If you come from a State that is currently in lockdown, watch for dates and times once lockdown is lifted. If you are in a State that isn’t in lockdown and you’re able to get out and about be sure to get your helmet tagged at the first opportunity, and if you receive a Christmas helmet goodie – be sure to get it tagged before you reach the warm up arena for your first competition. Please note: Helmet tagging indicates that your helmet meets current EA standards but does not indicate that the helmet has not been damaged or is unsafe. For further information visit www.equestrian.org.au

Horses helping humans By SUE SPENCE When I started Horses Helping Humans (HHH) 16 years ago, I had no idea it would become an award-winning program and earn the reputation it has of being an outcome based Equine Intervention so popular with family and youth services and for my story to be published by Pan Macmillan. We have now had 1000s of students through the program with proven outcomes of helping change lives for the better. It was these outcomes, which led me to license HHH so the program would help those in other communities. Becoming a licensee means you actually become part of your local community as only one license is granted per area. eg ( HHH Gold Coast, HHH Sunshine Coast etc ) Helping you become a respected youth and family service within your government boundary lines assures the quality and outcomes delivered at a professional level are the same in every area. This assures that case workers and counsellors in all areas can confidently refer to HHH for communications intervention and assist them with opening the doors of communication with their challenging clients. This helps them immensely when applying for their own funding, as HHH is a known program for helping with rePage 28

engagement back into school or study. Youth and family services, school chaplains or counsellors, mental health organisations, child protection, homeless youth, DV services and the Justice Dept refer the students we work with. The training covers extensive communication and body language techniques as well as requiring horsemanship ground skills to be of a high level. (The program is based on professional horsemanship, self-regulation and life skills which translate straight into everyday life situations.) The License includes full business set up, extensive hands-on individual training with me at HHH on the Gold Coast as well as me working with Licensees at their property with their horses. It also includes, me speaking at Licensees’ local Youth and Family interagency meetings to discuss outcomes and the referral system, I contact local council, MPs and training colleges, my attendance at the opening as I organise a media launch and offer ongoing support. Everything from invoice templates and advertising, referral forms, training manuals, videos, workbooks for youth workers, horsemanship, media releases upon opening, follow up and our annual conference is included. It is the most rewarding career and it is a blessing to be able to help so many make positive changes in their lives.

New rearing bit with brakes for control Supplied by WINNING TONGUE PLATE bit

Introducing the 5 star-rated patented design Rearing Bit with Brakes for complete control. Rearing bits have not changed since their inception until now. The award-winning Australian company, Intelligent Inventions, recipient of 13 international awards, has launched another winner - the revolutionary Rearing Bit with Brakes. Featuring the internationally renowned Winning Tongue Plate (WTP) bit, the Rearing Bit with Brakes is made from steel and includes two adjustable chains which apply nose, chin and poll pressure, stopping highly strung unruly horses in their tracks. It is proven to create easy leverage over the horse to subdue unwanted behaviours, giving the handler total control for sales, race days and daily training. Endorsed by trainers, handlers, veterinarians and stud farms: “It has been a game-changer.” – Greg Booth,

Trainer/Vet. “We were able to remove the earmuffs. He has been an angel to lead around and stops them getting their tongue over.” – Nicole Luke, Trainer. “These are a breakthrough.” – Ruby Chatterton, Foreman. “You will be amazed at the difference they can make.” – Mel Leitch, Trainer. The Rearing Bit with Brakes may be used in front of the horse’s bit for control in the race-day parade ring. It is also ideal for yearlings and young stallions at auction to reinforce pressure and release, teaching the horse to respond kindly.

The struggle to get training right By TANJA KRAUS As a rider, trainer and coach I have been witness to and experienced many types of struggle - my own, my horses, client horses, students. Sometimes the struggle is physical, sometimes it is mental, sometimes is emotional. I don't believe that all struggle is bad, or negative, or can he avoided. In fact I believe that struggles can help us progress and develop, especially when we focus on the outcome of the struggle, versus the struggle itself. For example - if I go to the gym and I continue to lift the weight that I am comfortable with, or that I can do easily, I won't ever progress to heavier weight. But, if I am given weight that is too heavy, I will struggle and I might discover that I am incapable of lifting that weight. I feel terrible! I may quit going to the gym altogether. The key is for my trainer to find the weight that is just that little bit heavier, which may cause me to struggle that little bit, but once I am successful in lifting it, I feel fantastic! In fact I feel like maybe it's possible for me to maybe one day lift even heavier weights. What we need to focus on is; Are we struggling to failure, or are we struggling to success ? If we help our horses, our students and ourselves, push that little bit out of our comfort

Listen, focus and be open to learning new things or new ways of doing things.

zone, feel that struggle, and come out the other side successful - we are building empowerment, progress, confidence. If we always quit when struggle arises, then we, or our horse, or our students, never learn what we are capable of. As trainers and coaches, it is our role to take a three bears approach: - Not too much struggle

- Not too little struggle - But just right Next time you see or experience struggle ask yourself how you can guide the struggle to success, and not failure. For more information visit www.horsemanshipforperformance.com

Road rules for motorists and horse riders By TRANSPORT NSW Horses and other livestock aren’t uncommon on roads. Drivers should be aware of the road rules, slow down and allow plenty of room when passing a horse, whether it’s being ridden, led or pulling a vehicle. Horses are easily spooked and can be unpredictable, so don’t use your horn or rev your engine. Horses are considered a vehicle on the road, so riders also need to be aware and obey the road rules For more information visit www.roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au

DRIVING NEAR HORSES Information for motorists

RIDING NEAR TRAFFIC Information for horse riders

• In NSW, horse riders have the right to share our roads. They have the same rights and responsibilities as other drivers, motorcycle riders and bike riders.

• Use horse trails where possible. If you have to ride on the road: * always obey road rules

• Be aware that horses can be easily frightened and unpredictable. • Slow down and take extra care on bends, crests and on narrow roads, particularly in areas close to horse riding schools or where you see warning signage. • If you’re passing a horse, whether it’s being ridden or led, or is pulling a vehicle, remember to: * slow down and allow plenty of room when overtaking * never use your horn or rev your engine as this could scare the horse. • It’s not just about leaving enough room while passing a horse, it’s about not driving too fast or making loud noises that might scare them. • If you are involved in a crash, you are required to stop and provide relevant information such as contact details and vehicle registration. If someone is injured, call Triple Zero (000). If a horse is injured, contact the nearest vet.

* avoid tight corners and crests and instead ride on roads where motorists have a good line of sight * ride on the left hand side of the road in the same direction as the traffic * use clear hand signals to notify motorists of intent to turn. • You are permitted to walk or ride your horse on footpaths and nature strips unless specifically prohibited and provided you give way to pedestrians at all times. • Ride during daylight hours and wear bright coloured clothing. • You can ride side-by-side with another horse rider as long as there is enough space to ride safely and stay within 1.5 metres of each other. • You should always wear a helmet that meets Australian standards.

The Horse Report

From Paddock to Show Ring Words by Alice Clarke Part 1 of 6. More to come in upcoming issues. Time to bring in that pony and transform him into your star… but not sure where you start? Every pony is different and every person has their own way of doing things, but we try to follow the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principal. We break it down into 6 categories which we will go through in the next 5 issues in coming months. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Maintenance Feeding Housing/Rugging Work/Training Show Gear for Horse/Rider Presentation

MAINTENANCE This is important, the basics when owning any horse and addressing your duty of care. These principals are a must before you start your show preparation and be done on a regular basis. No amount of money or work will transform your pony if you don’t practice the basics of pony/horse care. WORMING Your horse needs to be on a regular worming program appropriate to its age and environment. Young-stock are particularly susceptible to worm burdens so if your unsure your local vet can help you. It’s also a good

idea to rotate using different brands or wormer. It’s been proven over time the worms can become resistant to the same wormer. HOOF CARE As the old saying goes, no hoof, no horse. It is critical to ensure your horses hooves are maintained regularly. ,QFRUUHFW KRRI FDUH FDQ DIIHFW PRYHPHQW FRQ¿UPDWLRQ and soundness. EQUINE DENTISTY A horses teeth continue to grow throughout it’s lifetime. To maintain optimal food absorption and to ensure comfort during its work your horse needs to be seen by D YHW RU TXDOL¿HG HTXLQH GHQWLVW RQ D UHJXODU EDVHV HANDLING This might sound silly but your pony must have basic handling. You should be able to catch it, lead it, brush it all over and handle it safely. Every time you interact with your pony you are in fact teaching it. It’s good to practice and teach your horse to stand still and tie up quietly for periods of time. This is important when it comes time for clipping and show prepping your horse as we will discuss in more detail in a later issue. Last but not least. It is important to spend this initial time with your equine building a relationship and trust, a true partnership. Just remember, horses are masters of body language not the English language. What you put in is what you will get back. Practice all this then you will be ready for Step 2 in the next PRINTED issue.

Her first show (2020 SHC of SA HOTY) she won champion preliminary show hunter pony, came reserve champion in her newcomer show hunter pony, and 6th in the child’s show hunter pony (did not start in her open). Since then, she has had numerous placings in the child’s show hunter pony grand national qualifying classes - Including a 3rd at the rising star show and qualified for Adelaide Royal Show 2021. Although she has been ridden by many different child riders and is quiet to ride, she is still green. She has a butter soft mouth and requires soft hands when ridden. She can be marey on the ground. She is good to catch, trim, clip, plait, float. With an experienced home, she will be an extremely competitive hunter of the future. She is only offered to the best of homes. Chosen One

Price: $ 20,000. neg 16.2 hh Reg: SHC | EA | Thoroughbred Chestnut Gelding YOB: 2005 Sire: Choisir Dam: Emerald Beauty

Heartbreaking sale as Shae takes to new adventures. CHOSEN ONE needs no introduction to the show ring , winning many broad sashes and two Garryowen wins, we absolutely adore this boy and he has been the best first hack for Shae, being the simplest and quietest hack, requiring no plugs and little if no work down before any show or any time off. Qualified for next year’s Royals and qualified for Interschool nationals 2021. An absolute gentleman, always giving his all and being so reliable and successful. Will only be sold to the best of homes as only selling due to Shae taking on new ventures and hasn’t enough time, absolutely no fault of his own. Price is negotiable, fabulous home is not. Gleneagles Lucia

Ultimate rider class horse and proven in the hunter classes! Lucia has been with a professional training stables since a 3yo. Since then she has competed at top levels of showing with always being placed highly. She has carried her rider to SHC and EA champion riders. She trains medium level dressage at home but being 5 she still has a lot to learn, she is very willing, does enjoy jumping too! She has competed once in a preliminary test to score 73% Recently competed at ea southern cross spectacular to place 3rd in the newcomer and open show hunter large hack among the best horses in the country. Also carried Brynie to win grand champion rider. Videos available upon request Contact: Brynie Lee Ph: 0488 180 123

Muse

Price: $ POA 16.2 hh Reg: EA | SHC Brown Gelding Sire: Teofilo Dam: I Am Woman Heartbreaking sale due to new adventures for Ava. We simply adore this boy and I would happily keep him for myself (with tears as I post) but he really is way too special not to be shown to his full potential. Spider has been more successful than we could have hoped for in such a short period of time and was to be Ava’s “Garryowen” horse. He is the most gorgeous character, incredible to ride, has movement to die for, with an extravagant trot, a walk with a purpose and a canter to sit on all day. He has a superb temperament, no plugs and less than 20 minutes warm up for the biggest atmosphere shows. Spide takes everything in his stride and he is yet to really make his mark in the ring…..and in the right hands we are certain he will! Spider will only be sold to the most perfect home and will suit the most competitive of stables. He is currently schooling at elementary but not far off a medium test. 100% sound & drug free. Any vet check welcome, easy to shoe, catch, float and clip. Only genuine enquiries need call. Contact: Alannah Halloran Ph: 0438 661 060

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
