The Horse Report Sarah McMillan - World Cup™ Rookie of the Year
By KIRSTY PASTO EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA
Twenty-nine-year-old Sarah McMillan has been named this year’s FEI World Cup™ Australian League ‘Rookie of the Year’.
Sarah competed throughout the season on her horse Tyrone VDL, a stunning bay gelding, with whom she has only been partnered since 2021. “He isn’t always the easiest ride and he’s not the biggest, but his heart makes up for any quirk or idiosyncrasy of his,” Sarah said. “He is a trier and absolutely loves his job. Tyrone stayed so consistent this year and I am delighted with his performance. Being awarded Rookie of the Year is just the cherry on top.”
The ‘Rookie of the Year’title is aimed at recognising the incredible achievement of riders who have completed their first FEI World Cup™ season, the pinnacle level of jumping in Australia. The award is presented to the highest-ranking rider throughout the series who has never competed in a World Cup™ prior to the beginning of the season.
With fences upwards of 1.40m and riding against the best com-
binations in the country, the decision to step up to World Cup™ level for the first time can be a daunting one, but Sarah said the key is consistency and confidence.
“Waiting to find the right time to have that first World Cup start took a little longer than I would have liked, but I am happy I chose not to rush it,” she said.
“I wanted to be sure that it wasn’t going to be just one class, but a reflection of the level the horse and I felt very comfortable at and that we would continue the circuit afterwards.”
In order to recognise the efforts of Australia's rising talent, the ‘Rookie of the Year’award was launched for the 2018/19 season.
Graeme Watts, Chair of the National Jumping Selection Panel, believes it is important to encourage the growth and development of Australia’s athletes as they take the next step in their jumping careers.
“Congratulations to Sarah McMillan on being named Rookie of the Year,” Graeme said.
“This title rewards outstanding effort in a first season and it is essential that we continue to recognise, encourage and support our riders as they step up into the World Cup League for their first season.
“Also, I would like to extend a further congratulations to Sam Overton and Oaks Cassanova
who were overall winners of the Australian League, as well as winners of the Golden Grand award for leading horse.”
The 2022/23 FEI World Cup™ Australian League season was a tumultuous one, plagued by severe weather and setbacks following on from COVID, with only six of the originally scheduled 10 legs able to run.
The 2023/24 FEI World Cup™ Australian League will commence in March 2023 in Shepparton Victoria and promises another exciting season where Australia-based riders will also have the opportunity to obtain their Minimum Eligibility Requirements (MER) for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Horse Report Club feet a common hoof problem
By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic
Club feet are a very common conformational fault in horses but there is often confusion as to what exactly a club foot is. The most common presentation is the case where the two front feet of an individual horse are a different size and shape.
The club foot is usually smaller and more upright while the other foot can be relatively normal or often times have an exaggeratedly long toe and low heel.
In such cases, this supposedly normal foot is actually the one which is more likely to be a problem for the horse.
The confusion as to what a club foot means relates primarily to the fact that the term is generic and there is a very wide range of foot shapes and sizes that actually fit into the category. Club feet are technically graded into four types.
GRADE 1:
The hoof is noticeably smaller and the hoof angle is 3-5 degrees greater than the opposite foot.
GRADE 2:
The hoof is noticeably smaller, the hoof angle is 5-8 degrees higher than the opposite foot, and the heels do not touch the ground if trimmed to the normal length.
GRADE 3:
The dorsal hoof wall is dished, the angle is greater than 60 degrees and the growth rings at the heel are noticeably greater than at the toe.
GRADE 4:
The dorsal wall angle is greater than 80 degrees, the wall is heavily dished and the coronary band at the heels is as high as at the toe.
All grading systems are necessarily somewhat subjective and opinions will differ but they are certainly useful in helping to understand what a club foot means and attempting to attach some assessment as to their significance.
Grade 1 feet are by far the most common and many owners try to ignore the fact that there is any abnormality.
Many horses have absolutely no problem with the foot and perform a perfectly normal and effective function for the owner. More often they are termed a contracted foot or the owner will state that the foot is "a bit clubby".
I regard this ‘contracted´ foot as
very undesirable in horses when performing a pre-purchase examination as invariably over the years, we have found that if a performance horse develops a lameness, it is almost always in the clubby foot and so we advise people to be wary about acquiring the horse.
The hoof capsule on this foot is often 0.5 - 1cm longer than the other foot and one wonders how the horse copes with one leg being longer than the other. Presumably there is some compensation in the shoulder girdle attachment but I have to think that the longer leg tends to place a little more load on the affected limb.
Grade 2 feet are usually going to cause some problems although if shod and managed correctly, many horses will perform.
If left unshod, there is usually more pressure and subsequent wear on the white line at the toe with a predisposition to abscesses and white line disease.
These are the feet that many owners and farriers attempt to correct with vigorous trimming and incorrect shoeing and often end up converting into a grade 3 foot.
Grade 3 feet will only be suitable for very light work and Grade 4 feet render the horse virtually useless.
The typical club foot seems to develop as the horse grows.
Most foals are born with relatively upright feet which assume normal angles as the heels wear and the horse becomes more mobile.
There is no doubt that there is a genetic component to club feet and the majority of horses have inherited the defect from their parents.
Horses with this problem should not be considered as breeding stock.
In most cases the clubbiness becomes apparent and obvious as the horse reaches weaning age.
This is probably associated with more rapid phases of growth as the long bones of the leg lengthen and the deep flexor tendon
doesn't correspondingly increase in size resulting in pull on the bottom of the pedal bone and rotation of the entire hoof. Certainly it is the pull of the deep flexor tendon that causes the development of the club foot but exactly what the casual mechanism is still remains a mystery.

The Horse Report
Differential rates of growth and excessive neurological stimulation of the deep flexor muscles causing over contraction have to be the biomechanical factors and certainly "favouring" the leg because of pain or lameness resulting in inadequate loading of the heels and no stretching of the tendon will account for cases of acquired clubs.
Treatment of club foot obviously depends on the degree of club and the needs of the horse.
Most grade 1 feet will stay the same for the life of the horse and the majority of horses will perform satisfactorily, particularly at lower levels of demand.
Some grade 2 will be okay and satisfy the owner’s requirements if the foot is shod and the toe and white line protected but most people will attempt to do something.
Invariably the first step people do is commence to lower the heels.
Very often, this is the worst thing to do.
Excessive lowering of the heels usually results in the heel not being able to contact the ground after trimming, often only sub-
You need to consider the anatomy of the horse’s hoof and leg structures when correcting club feet.
tle, but that is all it needs.
The deep flexor tendon is now placed under tension and the body reaction is to contract the tendon more resulting in a worsening of the condition and gradually progressing to a grade 3.
The tendon pulls more, the sole at the toe is forced into the ground more and bruising and pedal osteitis result, a dish gradually develops in the toe and the whole process becomes worse.
Grade 2 feet should be managed more conservatively without lowering of the heel, (beyond what would be a normal trim!). Surgery is still often the best and most definitive option.
Grades 3 and 4 feet almost certainly need surgical intervention. Certainly grade 3 feet offer a usually excellent prognosis for improvement, grade 4s often do well as long as there are not other factors operating.
The surgery is to cut the inferior check ligament in the mid cannon region just below the knee. The check ligament acts as a brace or support for the flexor tendon, absorbing most of the load at impact and stance and transferring the load into the skeleton.
Cutting the ligament releases the tendon and lets the foot derotate.
The ligament is cut, the tendon released, and then the ligament re-heals with scar tissue and function returns to normal with no detriment to the horse.
Equine Health Feature Management of club feet depends on the horse
The younger the horse is when the surgery is performed, the better the outcome as the young foot is still growing and developing and will mould into a normal shape.
Mature feet have fully calcified and will never change their shape and so the cosmetic result is not as good.
Surgery usually results in a large scar on the cannon.
If the horse is young, the scar reduces in size proportionately as the horse grows and again the cosmetic result is a lot better. Keep in mind, this has been a rather simplistic review of the condition.

Reports in the media of "cracks" appearing in the structure of a tall residential building in Sydney immediately made me think of "cracks" developing in the hoof wall of our horse’s feet.
Assessors and engineers in Sydney were feverishly studying the structure and foundations of that building in an attempt to discover what possibly could have caused the stresses and forces on the building structure to result in the cracks.
Exactly the same diligent studies also need to be applied to assessment of our horse's feet if we going to be able to correct the issue.
Religiously and diligently applying iodine to a horse’s foot with seedy toe, contrary to the almost universal belief of horse owners, will not fix it.
Sorry to disappoint you folks but once again, correction, cure, and management of almost every problem in the horse depends on a proper diagnosis and understanding of the pathogenesis, (the underlying causes and reasons for the problems occurrence).
Seedy toe is a separation at the white line of the sensitive and insensitive laminae of the horse’s hoof.
The sensitive laminae are a series of zillions of tiny "fingers" that point outwards from the surface of the boney structure of the horse’s foot. They are very much alive and have an extremely rich blood and nerve supply. The insensitive laminae are likewise a
series of tiny "fingers" that point inwards from the undersurface of the horny hoof capsule of the foot.
They are relatively inert and have an effectively non-existent blood and nerve supply.
The opposing "fingers of the sensitive and insensitive laminae inter-digitalize and lock together the outer and inner layers of the hoof wall.
The hoof wall is produced by cells at the coronet, (and in parts of the sole) and the continual production of new wall at the coronet forces the lower existing portion to be forced down and so the wall grows down to ground level and so naturally the oldest portion of the hoof wall is the section at the
bottom of the wall.
The horny layer of the wall receives its nutrients and moisture from the underlying extremely vascular sensitive laminae and the integrity of the union of the outer and inner layers depends on the quality of this nutrient supply.
Many factors are involved in the development of seedy toe, but in a nutshell, the union between the outer and inner layer "fails' and the two portions separate and pull apart.
Naturally, the oldest part of the hoof wall will potentially have the weakest union and so it is logical to expect the separation to occur at the ground surface.
Equine Health Feature Understanding the causes of seedy toe
Without doubt, the single most common cause of seedy toe is lack of trimming and care of the foot.
The longer the foot grows, the older the distal portion is and the weaker the bond.
Horses that are properly cared for, regularly trimmed and shod, rarely develop seedy toe. Certainly some horses are more susceptible to the problem simply because of their genetic makeup.
In the same sense as fair or ginger complexion humans are more sensitive to the sun, chestnut and lighter colored horses are more prone to seedy toe although plenty of darker horses can develop the problem.
Often these horses have some other inherent weakness in the strength of the sulphide bonds that keep the foot intact.

The Horse Report

Page 9
The most common cause of seedy toe is lack of hoof care
from page 8
Nevertheless, seedy toe is a disease and it is a form of laminitis.
Where true founder usually occurs as a result of some internal problem, seedy toe is usually due to local factors.
Environmental factors would be the most common underlying cause.
Extremely dry or very wet conditions certainly impose challenge.
These conditions actually affect the whole of the hoof circumference, rather than the toe, and so are more likely to result in a more sinister form of the condition where the horse has brittle and chipped distal walls the whole of the way round the foot.
These horses can become almost impossible to shoe as the wall is so brittle that nails cannot hold.
In fact, in this case, nails, as a foreign body, in the wall, can actually serve to make the problem worse.
The distal hoof is in reality, no different to a piece of timber left out in the weather.
Cycles of soaking wet and then dry, cause the timber to swell and contract and eventually split and be ruined.
The hoof wall laminar union behaves in exactly the same way.
Afavourite potential cause for many people is a deficiency or lack of something nutritional. This can occur but is rarely a primary cause.
Certainly a blood test, (or hair or whatever
test), will not reveal the cause as any such deficiency would be too subtle to show up.
Remember that the new wall is formed at the coronet and grows down, and so any deficiency that has caused a weak union, has occurred many months earlier before the wall got to the ground.
Infection, hence the iodine, again is rarely a primary cause, however, separations can allow bacteria to secondarily proliferate in the area and can cause a specific problem called White Line Disease that can result in an extremely rapid progression and separation of large areas of the wall creating a dreadful problem.
This condition is a very common cause of the spectacular major cases of seedy toe that we see.
Secondary local accumulation of "muck" and bacterial growth creating an unhealthy environment will definitely further weaken the
already separated laminae and so hinder any cure, but relying on the application of iodine, or antibiotics, alone will not fix the problem.
Seedy toe obviously has a predeliction to occur at the toe.
Equine Health Feature Environmental changes can effect the hoof
The reasons for this are mechanical and simple. The toe region is the oldest part of the hoof wall - the distance from the coronet to the grounds at the heel is much less than the distance at the toe and so the wall at the heel is younger and more viable, and less likely to separate.
Similarly, the mechanical effect of poor trimming resulting in overgrown wall will be much greater at the toe than the heel simply because of greater leverage.
Almost all cases of cracks and seedy toe have a mechanical issue underlying the development.
Incredibly, the hoof, with an approximate surface area of 100 square centimeters, during stance phase in motion has to bear all the load of a 500kg horse.
The stresses and forces are enormous and any part of the hoof that for whatever reason has to bear a disproportionate amount of the load is going to be susceptible to damage and cracking.
For the wall to maintain its integrity and strength and hold together, it must be in optimum health.
If for any of the reasons alluded to above, the hoof wall is not strong and healthy, structural deformities are going to occur.

Equine Health
by DrNERIDA MCGILCHRIST
Forage is the single most important component of your horse’s diet… for a whole bunch of reasons.
It is your horse’s biggest source of calories, protein and some vitamins and minerals.
It keeps your horse’s gut full and less prone to colic.
It encourages saliva production during chewing and keeps the stomach full to dramatically reduce the risk of gastric ulcers.
Equine Health Feature Why forage is important in your horse’s diet
It feeds your horse’s good bacteria which then produce vitamins and hormones that keep your horse calm, healthy and happy plus they keep the immune system functioning properly.
It holds onto water in the gut and provides a rich natural source of electrolytes to keep your horse properly hydrated.
And perhaps one of the most important functions of forage – it keeps your horse chewing, head down and content.
So it’s really important to have enough forage in your horse’s diet and it’s also a wonderful idea to have a variety of forage in the diet. This high forage diet, especially if it contains a variety of forage, is the closest diet you can get to a horse’s natural diet and will be the best in terms of gut and overall
health for them!
If your horse’s energy is too low (less than 90% or your horse is currently losing weight on an all forage diet) then you will need to add some higher energy ingredients to the diet.
But keep in mind that you still want to keep as much forage in the diet as you possibly can.
Some suggestions for higher energy ingredients include sugarbeet pulp, copra meal, lupins, lupin hulls, higher energy forages like alfalfa/lucerne, oils and if they are safe for your horse, oats or other cereals (like corn/maize or barley) as long as the grains are cooked. The trick is to add as little of these
ingredients as possible to meet that digestible energy requirement and to keep as much forage in the diet as possible. So keep adding
small amounts of your chosen high energy ingredients and keep checking your results to see when you have added enough energy.
HERE IS A LITTLE HEADS UP TO SAVE YOU GETTING CONFUSED
If your horse is on free choice pasture or hay you will notice that as you add a new ingredient your horse’s pasture or free choice hay intake will go down as you add other ingredients. For example if your horse’s free choice forage intake is 10 kg/day…
And then you add 0.5 kg/day of oats, free choice forage will go down to 9.5 kg/day…
WHY?
Because your horse only has so much room in its gut for feed each day. So as you increase in this example, oats in the diet, your free choice forage intake is reduced proportionally.

Bone Gold Results VETERINARY RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT
HORSE: X XXXX XXXXXXX
MICROCHIP: …483
DATES OF EXAMINATION:
14TH APRIL
17TH MAY 2021
14TH JUNE
PLACE: XXXX CANUNGRA
Bilateral hind cannon radiographs of X XXXX XXXXXX were taken on 14th April 2021 and again on 17th May and 14th June 2021
Initial radiographs showed a 32mm longitudinal non displaced left mid cannon saucer fracture extending 6mm into the dorsal cortex and a 44mm longitudinal displaced fracture right mid cannon 5.5mm in depth mid dorsal cortex associated proximally with a 27mm x 6.5mm econdary fracture as below.
Initially, surgical removal was recommended of the RH fracture fragment.
Asecond series was taken on 17th May and third series on 14th June as above. Both fractures have attached and integrated with the parent bone with minor surface enthesophyte formation and periosteal activity evident.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Surgery is no longer recommended; however, the colt should be monitored carefully for any swelling on either cannon.
Prognosis for full return to racing is good.
COMMENTS:
Fractures of this nature usually require surgical removal. Resolution of cortical fractures of this size without surgical intervention is not expected.
Bone Gold supplementation was initiated on 14th April 2021 at 3 x scoops/day and should be continued.

If you’ve been using and following FeedXL for a while you will know I love sugarbeet pulp.
Recently, while I was doing a consulting job I found another (very important) reason to love beet even more.
And that was- you ask? It’s protein.
I had not ever thought about beet protein. In my mind it was a fibre and a source of energy (calories).
And that is still the most important reason you would add it to your horse’s diet.
In fact you don’t add beet unless you need extra calories in the diet (save for those situations where many of us use it to mix supplements into a tiny feed).
I just assumed it would have pretty poor quality protein.
But, here is what I discovered.
Sugarbeet has a really nice amino acid profile, especially given it is only around 9% protein.
If we compare it to another really common source of energy with a similar protein content, oats, you will see two very cool things (see adjacent table):
Sugarbeet’s lysine and threonine (two of the essential amino acids we think a horse runs out of the fastest, making them super important to supply in the diet) are considerably higher than what you will get from oats, despite a very similar total protein content. Methionine levels are very similar.
Sugarbeet’s isoleucine and valine (two of the branch chain amino acids that are so important for muscle recovery) are higher than oats. And Leucine levels are similar. So the protein in beet is pretty neat.
I do want to make it clear though that I would never add beet pulp to a diet for it’s for its protein. It is first and foremost a

source of calories. However, I do love the fact that when we add it to the diet for calories it also brings in good levels of essential amino acids.

“BYE BYE FLY”
QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.
The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).
While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.
Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).
Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.
The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.
KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:
Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.
It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and Camphor oil” which naturally relieves itchy skin.
These significant benefits are also enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can also be applied to surface wounds, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help prevent irritation and possible infection by nuisance insects.
Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extensive field experience has proven KURITCH to be a most effective solution for both preventing and healing distressing skin conditions caused by biting insects.
As well as KURITCH as a repellent, environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.
Midges breed near stagnant water. As they don’t fly more than a few hundred metres from their breeding area, housing or paddocking your horses more than 500 metres from those areas will reduce their exposure to the flies.
Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies.
Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites.
Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses. nd es so nd n’t an s, lp cin nen ve nd ns nt, so er w ng ur m re

Allergies of various types are an abnormal response to a weakened immune system. In these cases what may be quite harmless in normal circumstances may then become a problem.
Allergens such as pollen and reactions to insect bites or certain types of feed can become a problem.
Just about anything can trigger an allergic reaction in horses and these reactions can range from quite mild to serious. When an allergic reaction occurs, it can contribute to chronic inflammatory responses throughout the whole body of the horse.
Allergic reactions can include respiratory problems, skin irritations itchy and swollen eyes, coughing, diarrhoea, hives and irritations to the nose, mouth and skin, not to mention impacting on digestive health. Other types of allergic reactions that occur can be due to insect bites which may include spiders.
Spiders quite commonly involved can be the white tailed spider which can cause major skin irritations. These spiders tend to hide in dark quiet places such as horse rugs hanging on gates or post and rail fencing.
It is highly recommended to ensure that rugs are not left out but it kept in a cupboard away from these types of spiders. Some horses can react to other insect bites such as mosquitoes.
But most importantly if you support the immune system then you reduce the risk of horses having an allergic reaction. Phytonutrients are a reasonably new way of controlling inflammation and the negative effect that it has on the horse's body. These are natural compounds and have been shown to have an excellent effect on supporting immune function.
Many plants produce flavonoids, carotenoids, polyphenolics and anthocyanins all on their own to protect them from oxidative damage. Flavonoids are one of the biggest class of antioxidants and researchers have identified approximately 5000 flavonoids in various foods.
Polyphenols are a smaller class of antioxidants which scientists often referred to as phenols.
Terms such as phytonutrient and phytochemicals are a more generic term that are often used by researchers to describe nutrients an antioxidant chemicals in plants. Antioxidants are generally found in brightly coloured fruits, berries, grapes, citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables and plants. Other antioxidants that are very effective are vitamin E, vitamin C, beta carotene and selenium they all have extremely positive effects on free radicals and the damage that they cause.
Antioxidants have a major impact on free radicals. Oxidation is a very natural process that happens during normal cellular functions.
Just by breathing, exercising and breaking down food the horse's body creates free radicals. Whilst the body metabolises oxygen very efficiently, approximately 1 or 2% of the body cells are damaged in the process and
their molecules turn into free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules, with unpaired electrons.
The main problem with free radicals is that they often injure the cell, damaging the DNAwhich creates the seed for disease.
Antioxidants actually donate an extra electron to the free radical which neutralises it. Once it is neutralised, the reactive free radical chain ends which prevents cell damage. This reduces the risk of degenerative diseases.
It is important to find a balance between the exposure to harmful free radicals and the right balance and intake of protective antioxidants.
Providing the horse’s body with sufficient antioxidants and supporting the immune system is really important for overall health and well-being in any situation.
Agood well-balanced formula can be used daily to support immune function and prevent the risk of allergy based conditions.

Supplementing with antioxidants
from page 20
There are a number of highly effective antioxidants in the form of herb extracts and plant materials.
Some of these include grape seed extract, turmeric, ginkgo biloba and ginger root extract.
Generally speaking, equine diets tend to lack fresh antioxidant compounds. It is unusual for horses to have access to fresh green pasture particularly when there is a drought and lack of feed. Horses tend to be fed dried hays and hard feeds. Many of the current premix and pellet feeds a highly processed and refined this further reduces the antioxidant capacity.
By supplementing with a well-balanced antioxidant rich formula and feeding a natural balanced diet will go a long way to protecting the horse’s body from the effects of free radicals.
This will also reduce the risk of inflammatory diseases and assist with the horse's immune system, respiratory function and cardiovascular health.
Ahealthy horse and a healthy immune system will always reduce the risk of disease which includes allergies.
One of the most important aspects of managing allergies is digestive health - 60% of lymph tissue surrounds the digestive tract, horses can be exposed to foreign substances
that can cause illness, so the digestive system plays a very important role in maintaining a healthy immune function
The GI tract of the horse is highly developed but also quite sensitive therefore the digestive system and the way it functions can be easily upset.
Even stress can cause digestive disturbances these can include physical, mental, and environmental, drugs and poor nutritional intake.
Healthy strong digestive enzymes can help to maintain and restore the normal function of the digestive system, in doing so it can increase absorption and actually have an anti allergy effect.
Using a higher dose of pro and pre-biotics can also have a huge benefit on gut bacteria, this can also reduce pathogenic bacteria and their toxins and reduce inflammation and improve digestive.
Using high-quality nutritional interventions that contain powerful antioxidants and digestive support can improve the outcome for allergic reactions.

The importance of good biosecurity practices
Sourced from QUEENSLAND DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES
In 2007, Equine Influenza demonstrated how easily an infectious disease can spread in the horse community, around 69,000 horses were infected and it cost millions of dollars to eradicate.
Hendra Virus is a life threatening illness that affects not only horses but can be transferred to humans.
These incidents highlight the need for the community to learn biosecurity practices to protect both their horses and themselves.
Good biosecurity means using hygiene and other husbandry practices to prevent the occurence of illness or disease in the animals on your property.
People who look after horses need to do everything they can to reduce the risk of introducing disease to their property and of spreading disease.
Good biosecurity includes:
- Check horses daily for signs of ill health and injury
- Removing manure and soiled bedding from horses stables and yards
- Control vermin and insects
- Ensure tack and equipment are kept clean
- Keeping up to date with vaccination and worming protocols.
- Before purchasing a new horse, have your veterinarian examine it to identify any potential health issues.
When bringing a new horse home:
- Isolate the new horse from other horses for a minimum of 2 weeks
- Use separate equipment for the new arrival
- Handle other horses before the new arrival
- Check the new horse morning and night, monitoring food and water intake and temperature once a day if possible
- Wash hands after handling the new horse. Horses on neighbouring properties Ideally, double fencing should surround the perimeter of any horse property to protect against nose-to-nose contact.
The perimeter fence is crucial because it keeps the property's horses in and stray animals out. The fence should be constructed of post and wire or post and rail.
Double fencing is most simply achieved by adding an electric tape fence to the inside of a solid perimeter fence.
After an event or competition
Events or competitions can be a common point for disease spread. When at a show:
- Don't share feed or water containers
- Don't share grooming equipment or tack
- Minimise contact with other horses
- Monitor your horses for signs of illness.
When arriving home from an event:
- Clean and disinfect float, tack, feed and water containers, etc.
- Shower, change your clothes and footwear before touching horses on your property
- Avoid close contact between horses that attended the event and horses that did not -Monitor your horse’s health
- Keep good records of horse movements
People
on your property
- Have a set area for visitor parking located away from your horses
- Ensure antibacterial hand wash are provided for visitors to use before touching horses
- Keep a visitors record
- On larger properties, have foot baths at the entrance of the stables and record which horses visitors come into contact with—If your horse is sick
If you suspect that your horse is sick:
- Immediately isolate it from other animals
- Call your veterinarian
- Change clothes and wash your hands before handling other horses
- Wash and disinfect any equipment that has been in contact with that horse.

What makes Rose-Hip Vital Equine stand out in a cluttered market?
There are in fact many reasons. It all starts with the humble Rosehip, the berry-like fruit of the wild rose bush species Rosa Canina. A wholefood known to be one of nature’s richest sources of natural vitamin C. A superfood containing 8 naturally occurring vitamins (including C, E, B1 and B6) and 23 minerals (including iron, copper, zinc and magnesium), essential fatty acids (omegas 3, 6 and 9),
You may already know rosehips are often fed to horses for immune system support and a improved circulation and improved digestive function. So you’re probably wondering what makes Rose-Hip Vital® so special?
Rose-Hip Vital® is made from Rosehips manufactured with patented extraction and drying processes which isolate and activate a galactolipid (fatty acid) called GOPO®. GOPO® has clinically proven anti-
The patented processes also concentrate and preserve the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, transforming Rose-Hip Vital® into a product that is both in a category all on its own, and across many; It’s a joint
antioxidant and a nutritional supplement. It delivers noticeable improvements to mobility, mood, condition, willingness to move forward, performance and recovery while reducing
improving general health and wellbeing, and boosting immunity.
Rose-Hip Vital® is a clinically proven plantand rich source of natural vitamin C. There is no product like it. Unlike other joint supplements, Rose-Hip Vital® is 100% plant-
Rose-Hip Vital® is safe for long term use and it does not swab. It can be used alongside conventional treatments and supplements as well as potentially replacing or reducing the
medication.
Horses like it so much, even the fussiest of eaters become more enthusiastic about their feed once Rose-Hip Vital is added. So while Rose-Hip Vital Equine has become a highly use, it also has become highly recommended for improving general health and wellbeing, improving performance and maintaining healthy joints.
How does Rose-Hip Vital® Equine lengthen the lifetime of a working horse?
Vital is comprehensive. There are in excess of
placebo controlled clinical trials on people, dogs and horses mainly focusing on antithe unique compound GOPO.
To many people, antioxidants and anti-aging go hand-in-hand. Antioxidants are talked about as the antidote to cell-damaging free radicals. Exercise and the associated stress and increase in oxygen consumption are linked to an increased production of free radicals. When the production of free radicals overwhelms the body’s antioxidant defences, oxidative stress can occur with subsequent
research shows horses need natural vitamin C to help block toxic free radical activity, which causes damage throughout the body including joints and cartilage.
Some white blood cells in the body contain granulocytes which enable them to ‘clean’
bacteria in it. Too many of these white blood cells wear down tissue cartilage. In large numbers they can also produce chemical enzymes and toxic freeradicals which cause even more tissue damage. Excess accumulation of white blood cells combined with the release of chemical substances cause’s joint pain
The more becomes, the more the white blood cells are attracted to it –a painful cycle.
protects cartilage. This means it helps to delay the onset of arthritic changes or slow down further cartilage degeneration if it already exists.
In short, if you want to extend the lifetime of your working horse, feed it a natural antirich source of natural vitamin C. Rose-Hip Vital® Equine is your only option, and the results speak for themselves.

The Horse Report Equestrian Queensland facilities update plan
By EQUESTRIAN QUEENSLAND
In December 2019, Equestrian Queensland (EQ) released the EQ Statewide Facilities Plan 2019-2028.
The Statewide Facilities Plan was the culmination of 12 months work to clearly identify and prioritise equestrian facility requirements based on data, member feedback and consultation with government.
As part of the Statewide Facilities Plan, Equestrian Queensland identified six key priority projects that were most required to secure the statewide facilities network. These projects were:
QUEENSLAND STATE EQUESTRIAN CENTRE
Master planning and project delivery to achieve a minimum Tier 2 facility (including cross country course) with surface and stables/camping upgrade being the priority
TOOWOOMBASHOWGROUNDS
Master planning and project delivery to achieve an all-discipline minimum Tier 2 facility with surface being the priority
GOLD COAST
Establishment of a minimum Tier 3 facility with surface being the priority
TOWNSVILLE
Professionally facilitated regional equestrian facility planning to identify potential multi-use home grounds and targeted facility improvements
FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND
Professionally facilitated regional equestrian facility planning to identify potential multi-use home grounds and targeted facility improvements
REDLAND
Establishment of a minimum Tier 3 facility (capable of hosting state level events) with surface being the priority
At this time, EQ is very cognisant that there is not a facility in Queensland that meets the preferred facility standards for delivering international and national level equestrian events.
With Brisbane and greater South East Queensland hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, EQ is continuing to work with government and stakeholders to deliver an international standard facility as part of an Olympic legacy for the equestrian community.
EQ would like to acknowledge and thank all those in the equestrian community who are supporting the development of improved facilities across Queensland.
EQ would also like to especially acknowledge the commitment from volunteers on the Dressage Queensland committee who have been advocating and fundraising to support the delivery of an artificial sand based equestrian surface at a Queensland equestrian venue that meets the requirements set by the FEI for international level competition.
EQ appreciates the frustration felt by many in the community about the lack of progress to deliver a suitable surface for international level competitions in Queensland to date. However, EQ is pleased to report that much planning work has been completed to support this goal in the short term and also addresses the deficit of infrastructure (surface, stables and camping) at equestrian venues in Queensland in the medium to
26 www www
longer term to support the delivery of national and international competitions across multiple disciplines in the coming years.
EQ is pleased to provide an update on some of the important facility planning works currently underway or planned for 2023: Toowoomba Showgrounds:
EQ has partnered with the Royal Agricultural Society of Queensland (Toowoomba Showgrounds) to improve the current equestrian facilities at the Showgrounds. This work also includes a master plan and business case to develop an Equestrian Centre of Excellence at the showgrounds.
Once developed, the Toowoomba Equestrian Centre of Excellence would offer the ability to host large scale equestrian events (more than 300 competitors) to a high standard with fit-for-discipline competition surfaces. These improvements would fill an identified gap in the Queensland equestrian facility market, in both the short and long term.
EQ members and equestrian supporters are encouraged to express their interest in the project by completing a short survey. https://survey.zohopublic.com/zs/VICNJp More information about the project at the Toowoomba Showground is available at https://survey.zohopublic.com/zs/VICNJp
Queensland State Equestrian Centre (QSEC):
Moreton Bay Regional Council and QSEC recently completed a tender process to replace the existing surface in the indoor arenas.
Equestrian Land Developments (ELD) was announced as the successful tenderer and works were recently completed to replace the indoor arenas with a new equestrian sand surface.
This project has been completed in December 2022 which will support the delivery and growth of equestrian activities at QSEC in 2023.
EQ is continuing to engage with Moreton Bay Regional Council and QSEC about opportunities to deliver a sand based artificial equestrian surface somewhere on the site into the future that meets the requirements set by the FEI for international level competition.
Townsville:
EQ is currently leading a regional equestrian strategy process in collaboration with Townsville City Council to develop a multiuse equestrian facility.
The project has assessed the suitability of 11 sites taking into account factors such as land parcel size and usability, access and suitability of location and some existing use considerations to identify the preferred site for further consideration.
The next stage of the project will commence in early 2023 with local and regional community consultation with equestrians and supporters commencing in February 2023.
Gold Coast: Gold Coast City Council is currently completing a regional equestrian facility master planning project.
EQ is very cognisant that equestrian activity of the Gold Coast, particularly the activities of Equestrian Gold Coast Club is significantly constrained due to the limitation of existing equestrian venues on the Gold Coast.
EQ will be engaging further with the Gold Coast City Council in early 2023 to support the prioritisation of work that will allow clubs and event organisers to increase equestrian participation opportunities to meet both current and future demand.
Far North Queensland: In 2023, EQ will be further engaging with local government authorities in Far North Queensland to support the work being completed of local affiliates to develop and improve existing facilities as well as continuing to advocate for improved facilities to meet current and future demand.
Redland:
In 2023, EQ will be further engaging with local government authorities in the Redland area to support the work being completed of local affiliates to develop and improve existing facilities as well as continuing to advocate for improved facilities to meet current and future demand.
EQ acknowledges and thanks equestrian venue operators, including the team at QSEC, the Toowoomba Showgrounds and equestrian venue operators across Queensland for the continued support of equestrian activity. EQ is really excited by the unprecedented amount of planning work occurring for equestrian venues across Queensland at present.
The completion of this important planning work will the support the delivery of physical works across multiple venues in the next 12-24 months to support the achievement of the goals set in the EQ Statewide Facilities Plan 2019-2028.
EQ will be publishing an update to the Statewide Facility Plan mid year in 2023 to reflect the work that has been completed.

2023 IQ Equiskills program registrations open
The 2023 Interschools Queensland (IQ) Equiskills Program Expressions of Interest (EOIs) are being sought from IQ participants that wish to be part of the 2023 program. Those that applied in the 2022 intake and weren't accepted are encouraged to reapply.
About the program: What is Equestrian Skills?
EAand EQ, as part of its member education services, has provided school-based riders with access to their Introductory Riding and Introductory Horse Management workbooks at a discounted prices for use in the Equestrian Skills Program. Why participate?
Maybe you aspire to work within the horse industry when you finish school or maybe you just want to increase your equine knowledge base. In all cases successful completion of modules are registered with the EA Coaching Pathway Officer as they form part of the pathway to becoming an accredited EACoach.
How?
The minimum age for the EAnational education courses is fixed at; - 12 years for Intro Horse Management & Intro Riding - 15 Years for Level 1 Horse Management & Level 1 Riding - 18 years for Coaching Assessments will be carried out by a Coach Educators (CE) or Skill Specific Training Assessors (SSTA).
IQ and EQ will be facilitating subsidised ses-
sions at the IQ State Championships to enable participants to access a CE or SSTA for feedback or the 'signing off' of assessments.
Riders 18 years and over can progress toward becoming an Introductory EACoach with the purchase of the appropriate resources.
Once the Introductory Horse Management and Introductory Riding modules have been completed, the Level I Horse Management and Riding modules provide another opportunity for further study.
The purchase of the first two introductory
workbooks is $129 in total (inc postage). There will be a subsidised fee to be paid to access the assessment sessions at IQ State Championships. Other forms of support will also be available to participants outside of these events.
As this is the second year of this program, IQ have increased the intake of participants to 25. Preference will be given to riders in the higher year levels at school.

Australian Cross Country
Australian Cross Country (ACC) was established in 1997 due to demand for cross country services. The principal Wayne Copping has been designing cross country courses and constructing obstacles since 1975 and involved in many events in Australia.
Wayne has also designed and built in a number of other countries including the Pan American Games in Toronto in 2015.
The FEI have utilised Wayne’s skills with Course Design workshops, mentoring and seminar presenting as one of the FEI’s Course Design Experts.
Australian Cross Country provides services such as full or partial course design, consultation on venue construction and layout, technical services for events and cross country portable jump design and construction.
Indeed ACC has developed a style and system of building portables in a complete flat pack format. These jumps are built in our shop in such a way they can then be dismantled and marked up and strapped onto bearers. This method means the jumps only take up multiples of pallet space on a transport meaning at least thirty 4* jumps can be accommodated on a drop deck semi trailer. These jumps would all be ranging in jumpable width from 1.4mts to 3.6mts.
The pictures show the conversion from a full scale jump to a flat pack which is easily re assembled on site with a driver drill only. All hardware is included, jumps can be coated with exterior stain to the purchaser’s requirement.
One of the many skills that ACC has is the ability to make artistically and quality designed obstacles to fit with and promote various sponsors that Organising Committees obtain.
Australian Cross Country can also supply any type of training fence for private centres from existing venues to green field sites to suit any levels of training or competition.
ACC was appointed by Spirafix Ground Anchors a few years ago as their Australian distributor, the Spirafix anchor was the first and only anchor that was recommended by the FEI for anchoring portable cross country fences. Avast range is available for all situations and conditions not just the equestrian anchors as shown, these are the only anchors that have been tested under all ground conditions and have all relevant data back up.
These anchors are available on order from Australian Cross Country or through Spirafix Australia. Complete information is available from www.spirafix.com

Step it up step out of your comfort zone
By TANJA KRAUS
Staying in our comfort zone makes a lot of sense - after all it has 'comfort' right there in the name.
We all know that our day-to-day lives can present enough challenges, so why would I want to push myself out of my comfort zone, especially in a pursuit I have chosen to give me pleasurable leisure time - like my horse riding.
The thing is, when we really have a good look at it, sometimes our 'comfort zone' isn't really all that comfortable.
For example:
If I lack the confidence to take my horse out on trails, or out to a competition or clinic, then my 'comfort zone' remains at home.
Sure at the time it feels pretty comfortable, but when I bought my horse I probably had visions of going out and about to enjoy him, and the social time that being around likeminded people brings.
Maybe I am fine going out and about, and my comfort zone relates more to my level of training.
We see often time and time again students struggling for months, if not years, with the same exercise - and when asked at a clinic if they had practiced at home, inevitably the answer is no.
Be it because they 'didn't want to muck it up' or simply because consciously or subcon-
sciously we avoid the things we aren't good at - after all when we ride and only focus on what we and the horse are good at - it’s a pretty good ride.
The trouble with that is, that without working on the stuff we aren't good at, it never gets better, and at some point our progress comes to a stop.
Progress is the mother of motivation and so
when we feel we are no longer progressing, our level of enjoyment drops, and our 'comfort zone' again becomes less comfortable. Take a few minutes to list your top three and bottom three - the three things you are great at with your horse, and the three that need the most work. This will help to shape your lesson plan over the coming months. Happy trails, Tk xo

The Horse Report Thoroughbred industry to hold pony race
Supplied by THOROUGHBRED INDUSTRY CAREERS
Thoroughbred Industry Careers (TIC), Australian Turf Club and Pony Club Australia will hold an exhibition pony race as part of Australia Day celebrations at the public holiday Warwick Farm meeting on Wednesday, 26 January 2023.
The pony race brings young horse enthusiasts and their families from a grassroots level to a feature Sydney raceday and will see a group of ponies and riders race up the Warwick Farm straight.
It follows a recent inaugural TIC Pony Race held at Queensland’s Doomben Racecourse.
Pony racing is aimed at generating industry involvement and interest from young horse owners and their families looking to further a career in thoroughbred racing.
TIC Chief Executive Officer, Lindy Maurice said every major racing jurisdiction around the world has some version of pony racing, it’s very big in England and Ireland in particular.
“Kids in Australia play cricket, netball or football, but they can’t play racing,” Lindy said.
“The best way to fall in love with a sport is to do it and our goal is to reach as many young people as we can so they will learn and understand racing for the many career opportunities it offers.
“There is a nationwide staff shortage in the industry and we hope events such as this provide an opportunity to negate those issues in the long term.”
As one of the founding stakeholders in TIC, Australian Turf
Club has been a major supporter of the pony racing concept.
“For almost three years TIC has been responsible for providing life-changing opportunities to many people interested in getting a foot in the door of our industry,” ATC Executive General Manager Racing and Wagering, James Ross said.
“We are excited to support new concepts such as this pony race and we see the family-focused Australia Day meeting at
Warwick Farm as a fantastic opportunity to showcase the industry to pony club participants as well as provide an additional level of entertainment on course.
“The Australian Turf Club is one of the largest racing and training operations globally with nearly 1800 horses in training across three metropolitan racecourses in Sydney.
“We hope that furthering the interest and skills of young people in our industry will lead to increased career opportunities and participation.”
The exhibition race will see up to 10 ponies and their riders compete down the Warwick Farm straight.
The riders and ponies are members of the Pony Club Australia (PCA) network, of which TIC is a major sponsor.
Formed in 2019, TIC is a not-forprofit organisation that aims to provide a centralised platform to promote racing and breeding industry careers options, introduce grassroots programs, facilitate best practice education pathways and assist in developing staff retention and welfare strategies for career longevity.

She only trialed as a race horse retiring as a three year old and then coming straight to us. Sparkles has attended off the track clinics and local shows, taking away champion show hack at Albany agricultural show, her most recent event. Aria is an exceptional, Grand National quality young mare. With incredible movement and extreme wow factor, alongside temperament you can’t buy, this horse will make anyone’s dreams come true.
Aria has been to many in-hand shows including the royal show, Arabian state championships and more coming home with champions, supremes and supreme of supremes every time.
Aria is now broken in and ready to hit the show ring this year and eligible for newcomers 2022. She has done her first ridden show last weekend coming home with two champions already.
It is with the most heaviest heart that this horse has become for sale and is only due to being a young single mother and I can no longer afford to keep her so I am finishing up showing. Being my heart horse she will only be sold to the absolute very best of homes. No time wasters will be accepted please as this is already such a hard decision.

THE ULTIMATE MOTHERS DREAM!
Freddie is everyone’s favourite when you meet him, he is the ultimate kids pony, and he is always handled by my 2 and 4 year old.
Freddie is the one in the stable that is used for the kids pony rides, or road rides, for the kids to get out and brush and wash. He can be on his own or with others.
He is a top quality Shetland, qualified for grand nationals 2023 and Southern Cross 2023. He has so many winnings, from when first started out as a newcomer, and now this year competing at two Grand National qualification shows and qualifying at both shows.
Freddie is the ultimate Lead rein Shetland, he is also an amazing ridden Shetland. He sits in a frame and does his job for the kids. He goes from the float to the ring no work down. He is now ready to take a little kid to the top. Freddie is a Grand National winning Shetland. He has the best work ethic, but also so well educated.
He has no vices, no health issues, good to tie, float and clip.

This maybe is the last opportunity to acquire a foal out of our outstanding TB mare Mireille; dam of TPMaybelline, Mietta, Manhattan, Monte Carlo and Madison Avenue all being Showring champions. She was being retained, however due to time constraints we have decided to make this filly available to a very discernible buyer. Winnie is now 3 years old and is extremely well handled, rugged floated, lunged and farriered. She is now ready to break in and start her career under saddle. She has matured into a beautiful filly and is possibly one of the best moving up and coming galloways around. Her price reflects the fact she ia currently not in a show prep. She has been seen to windsuck but we regard it as very mild.

Qualifying for Grand nationals at his first ever show under-saddle in 2021 and successfully competed at Grand nationals in 2022 receiving top 10 in both the open and child’s and producing flawless workouts.
Archie is not a spooky horse and is super easy to have around. He would happily stand tied up to the float all day. He is happy to pop over small jumps and go on trail rides. He is awesome to clip, shoe, wash etc.
We have owned Archie since a yearling and have done it all with him, it’s a super heartbreaking sale of a much loved member of our family but due to other young horses coming up we have realised it is time to sell Him.
Entered for SHC battle of the borders 2022 is fully qualified for Canberra and Sydney royals 2023.
Archie is not suited to a beginner rider and I feel he would really excel with a top little junior rider that wanted a competitive first ridden and rider mount that is also good enough for the open.

EQUINE & CANINE PATENT FORMULAS
We are proud to announce the release ofour two new patent formulations, BONE GOLDTM and COAT GOLDTM in both the Equine and Canine presentations.
Our Formulas have been granted Innovative Patents as they present as totally unique in the market and are clearly differentiated from all other supplements.
Our new products have been produced with the same attention to detail with the highest quality pharmaceutical grade ingredients manufactured in an Australian GMP approved site.

VET GOLDTM products are made in the same laboratories as many Veterinary Pharmaceuticals with the highest quality control standards in the Australian Veterinary industry.
Our products are developed with specialist bio-engineers focused on ensuring maximising product effectiveness balancing ingredient ratios and particle sizes to optimise physiological uptake, digestibility and stability.
Extensive research and development in conjunction with clinical testing and observation by Veterinary Surgeons on clinical equine and canine cases is conducted on all our products.
Dr Watts has lectured at Equine Veterinary Association meetings, at the University ofQueensland and runs regular remedial Equine podiatry workshops in conjunction with Veterinary colleagues and Farriers in addition to running a busy clinical Equine Practice.

“BYE BYE FLY BYE FLY”
Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses. nd es so nd n’t an s, lp cin nen ve nd ns nt, so er. w ng ur m re
