Australian team wins 2022 Oceania Championships By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA The Australian Senior Green Team have ridden to victory at the 2022 Oceania Championships, hosted by Zeep Melbourne International 3 Day Event. The competition culminated with the showjumping phase, seeing the Australian Green Team maintain their lead to win the overall Senior Championships on a score of 107.3. The Australian Senior Gold Team finished second on 111.9, followed by New Zealand with 125.6. Australian Green Team members, Shane Rose on Easy Turn and Jessica Rae on Fifth Avenue, both jumped clear rounds in the final phase. Lauren Browne, riding Sky's da Limit, knocked one rail, while Sam Jeffree and Woodmount Lolita decided not to start in the showjumping following yesterday's cross-country effort. Shenae Lowings and Bold Venture, members of the Australian Senior Gold Team, won the overall Pryde's Easifeed CCI4*-L competition, marking the biggest win of the combination's career to date. The pair finished with a score of 25.3, adding no jumping penalties to their dressage score for the duration of the event, and just 0.4 time in the showjumping. When asked how the win felt, Shenae said the moment seemed surreal and now her focus is now firmly on selection for the upcoming FEI World Championships, set to take place in Italy later this year. “I am extremely excited, I feel like there is still so much hard work to come and that this was the easy bit,” Shenae said. “I have got my World Championship qualification and I am just really looking forward to what the future holds and what we have planned over the next few months.” Following a very influential showjumping

phase, the Australian Young Rider Team finished in second place on 157.5 points, behind Team New Zealand on 139.0, in the Oceania Championship competition. Australia started the showjumping phase with a team of three after Edward Darby and Dawn of the Day elected not to present to the Ground Jury this morning. The David Sheppard designed track proved tough in the Furphy Media CCI3*-L, with some unexpected difficulties for the Australian Young Rider Team. The highest placed Australian Young Rider was Riley Lyall, riding his off the track Thoroughbred GI War Machine, finishing in 10th position. Australian Young Rider Team Chef d'Equipe, Andrew Barnett, said all members of the Team represented Australia admirably and that the future of Australian Eventing is bright. “It has been a fantastic experience for all of them,” Andrew said. “They have all worked extremely hard, and really well as a team. We have experienced the highs and lows of being a team.

“It all got very close in the end, but it didn’t go our way. “I think the experience these guys have had is fantastic and they are going to improve on their riding and come back stronger”.

Feeding for a fertile and healthy stallion By Dr NERIDA RICHARDS Come winter, breeding stallions are ramping up for the season that lies ahead. While maintenance of fertility is of utmost importance in the care of breeding stallions, they must also be kept looking their best sound, energetic and disease free. As with many aspects of horse care, a holistic approach is required to achieve these goals. MAINTAINING FERTILITY A stallion’s level of fertility is affected both by his genetics and his past and present environment. Good nutrition will never be able to make an infertile stallion fertile. However poor nutrition may limit an otherwise fertile stallion’s effectiveness in the breeding barn. To maintain maximum fertility in your stallions, a balanced diet that meets his energy, protein, vitamin and mineral requirements must be fed. Using a well-formulated concentrate feed or a quality vitamin and mineral balancer pellet or supplement, together with high quality forage, is generally all that is needed to meet requirements. Ensuring the diet is well-fortified with antioxidants is essential for maintaining maximum fertility. A study by Contri et al (2011) found that stallions supplemented with 1500 mg of vitamin E, 2.5 mg of organic selenium and 360 mg of zinc per day had improved sperm characteristics including increased average path velocity, straightness, improved membrane integrity, progressive motility and reduced numbers of sperm with abnormal morphology. The Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio in the diet may also have some bearing on the fertility of stallions, particularly those that will be used for the collection of cooled and frozen semen for shipping. Sperm with a higher Omega 3 to 6 ratio (or more specifically a higher docosahexaenoic acid or DHA to docosapentaenoic acid, or DPA ratio) appear to handle the stress of cooling or freezing with less damage, giving them a greater capacity to fertilise an egg. High forage, low concentrate diets that contain more Omega 3 than Omega 6 give stallions the best natural chance of having sperm with more

Good nutrition helps keep your stallion at his peek. Omega 3 fatty acids. HOW DO I LOOK? Stallions need to look their best to attract the mare owner’s eye. By the time a stallion reaches breeding age nothing can be done to change overall conformation, but muscling and topline, coat shine and a fit but well-conditioned appearance can all be manipulated through nutrition. Feeding a well-balanced diet that contains high quality protein for maintaining muscle mass, oils with both Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for coat and skin health and a full array of vitamins and minerals will keep stallions looking their best. STAYING SOUND Breeding, like most physical activities, promotes a degree of wear and tear on a stallion’s musculoskeletal system. Diet has a huge impact on the health of a stallion’s joints and bones. Trace mineral and vitamin deficiencies as well as low quality protein in the diet can contribute to joint and bone degeneration. While many stallions are supplemented with equine joint formula’s as a preventative strategy, using joint supplements can only be effective if they are fed in conjunction with a wellbalanced diet that meets requirements for protein, vitamins and minerals. The ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acids in the diet may also play a role in joint health, with high Omega 6 diets tending to aggravate

joint inflammation. High grain diets that are high in Omega 6 fatty acids should be avoided in preference to forage dominant diets higher in Omega 3. STAYING HEALTHY All too often good stallions are lost to colic or laminitis. While there are many causes of both these diseases, some are easily avoided through good nutrition. The risk of both colic and laminitis can be lowered by feeding a high forage, low grain diet, where an absolute minimum of 1.5% of bodyweight (1.5 kg/100 kg of bodyweight, 1.5 lb/ 100 lb bodyweight) is fed per day of forage. A preferable minimum forage intake is closer to 2% of bodyweight which will ensure a well filled and hydrated gut environment. In addition, where grains are fed, only cooked and very digestible grains should be fed to stallions to lower the risk of undigested grains entering the hindgut where they will be rapidly fermented, causing acidosis. Hindgut acidosis is known to cause both colic and laminitis. Any stallions prone to laminitis should not be fed any grain or grain/grain byproduct-based feed. Use FeedXL to steer clear of dangerous ingredients. To keep stallions healthy they should not be allowed to become sedentary and overweight or obese as this also increases the risk of insulin resistance and laminitis.  Continued page 5

Know what your stallion’s feed requirements are  From page 4 And it increases joint wear and tear. The maintenance of a regular exercise program and a moderate to good body condition will keep insulin sensitivity high and the risk of insulin induced laminitis low and reduce the stress placed on their joints. Regular exercise will also help to keep stallions fit and better able to cope with a rigorous breeding schedule. HOW MUCH TO FEED How much feed a stallion needs on a daily basis to maintain the desired body condition is going to depend on the individual stallion, whether he is exercised, how much voluntary exercise he does, how many mares he covers in a season and what his maintenance energy requirement is. Some stallions are constantly on a diet while others are almost impossible to keep enough weight on. As such, the amount you feed each day depends on the stallion. For stallions that maintain their weight easily, a forage-based diet (pasture and/or hay) supplemented with a high-quality forage balancer pellet fed at less than 1 kg/day with a small amount of oil to assist with coat shine may be all he needs. For stallions that need a higher energy diet to hold their weight, well-formulated and fully fortified complete feeds or high energy ingredients mixed with your own supplement can be used to increase their energy intake. Stallions should be fed enough to maintain them at a condition score of 5 to 6 (on the Henneke 1 to 9 scale) where their ribs cannot be seen while stationary, but are easily felt with light to moderate pressure. When formulating stallion diets, it is always a good idea to maintain flexibility by having at least one component of the diet that you can increase or decrease according to the stallions energy needs on a day to day basis without messing up the balance of the diet. For example if you have a base diet that consists of 2 kg of concentrate feed that contains all of the high quality protein, vitamins and minerals, including anti-oxidants the stallion needs,

FEED WITH CARE As stallion owners are well aware, stallions are valuable animals and as such they need to be fed with utmost care. Weigh feed ingredients to ensure they are fed accurately and know how to adjust the diet safely to cater to an individual stallions needs without unbalancing the overall nutrient profile.. Make sure nutrients important for fertility, including antioxidants are fed at optimum levels and perhaps most importantly of all, don’t forget the forage. Failure to accurately feed enough forage may put your stallion at a higher risk of colic and

Breeding your broodmare is a big decision mare not coming into season such as an unexpected pregnancy. Furthermore, not all mares are obvious when displaying signs of being in season or “oestrous behaviour”. Your veterinarian should be able to determine the stage of her cycle by an ultrasound.

There are so many things to consider when thinking of sending your mare to stud… stallion choices, reproductive options, veterinary costs and so much more. The ultimate goal is to have a healthy foal, that suits your needs or meets the markets needs, so how do you achieve this? 1. Good health and nutrition is is vital. Before starting on any breeding journey, it is important to make sure your mare is in good health she is up to date with vaccinations, has had a dental check-up and has been wormed. Remember a healthy mare is your best bet for a healthy foal. 2. In the lead up to the breeding season, assess your mare’s body weight. It is important that your mare is in good body condition for breeding. Mares who carry excess weight may have trouble cycling and falling pregnant. 3. Breeding earlier in the breeding season usually gives the best results. Some mares will benefit from being rugged, put under

5. Whether your mare is having a Live Cover, or being bred by Artificial Insemination, make sure you have a solid plan in place and have discussed arrangements before sending her to stud. Good communication between mare owner and stallion farm will ensure that your mare is given the best opportunity to conceive. It always pays to have a good plan in place in order to have the most successful outcome with your mare. When it comes to breeding, careful planning with your vet along with taking precautions such as a breeding soundness exam and swabs prior to breeding, will always assist with the best possible opportunity to conceive and have a live, healthy foal.

The drum on calcium and phosphorus ratios By ANTOINETTE FOSTER BSc Nutrition, Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist ©Hi Form Australia PL 2022 Calcium and phosphorus Calcium and phosphorus are extremely important for the horse’s health and wellbeing. The horse’s bones and teeth contain approximately 99% of the calcium in the horse’s body. The horse’s health is very reliant on calcium and phosphorus. Calcium supports brain and neuromuscular function, blood clotting and the activity of enzymes. The attributes of phosphorus are as follows, the regulation of muscle contraction, integrity optimization of glucose for energy conversion. About 35% of the average bone is made up of calcium where is phosphorus is approximately 14 -17%. This ratio is roughly 2:1. Based on this ratio, I suggest that it is ideal to maintain this in the horse’s diet. What suits each individual horse? We understand that the calcium and phosphorus ratio is especially important but the amounts of each mineral in the horse’s diet is also important. Calcium and phosphorus are macro-minerals which means that horses must receive a

number of grams per day per body weight. Whereas milligrams per kilo are called micro minerals. What you will supply your horse depends entirely on individual needs. For example, there are different requirements for pregnant and lactating mares and young growing horses. It makes sense that these horses require a higher level of these minerals. Calcium should be at least 0.6% and the phosphorus 0.4% of the total ration to ensure that the joints, muscles etc are supported for these types of horses. Mature horses require the lowest amounts

for maintenance. These types of horses are those that are in work and only require adequate levels to support physical function. Horses undergoing intense exercise require higher levels of calcium. The higher the work level, the higher the requirement for calcium, this is necessary due to bone and tissue repair but a high level is lost through sweat. By increasing the intake 1.5-2 times the maintenance requirements should support the horse efficiently.

The risk of orthopaedic disorders  From page 13 Make sure you calculate the total feed ration. The ratio of Ca and P is always important when looking at horse rations. A ratio of two parts Ca: one part P is ideal, with a range of 1:1 to 6:1 being acceptable. Because phosphorous competes with Ca for absorption in the gut, total diets that are less than 1:1 or contain more P than Ca should be avoided. If only one part of the diet has an inverted ratio, the total feed ration may be perfectly adequate. in some cases, you may have the correct ratio, but still be deficient in these minerals if there are inadequate quantities within the feed. It is rare to have excessive amounts of calcium in the feed ration however if this does occur it can interfere with absorption of some trace minerals. These can include iron, zinc and copper and can have an impact on kidney function. What can happen if the ratios are inverted? I am sure everyone has heard from time to time about the importance of feeding a correct calcium to phosphorus ratio! There is a reason for this because if the ratio is inverted and there is a calcium deficiency it can cause serious issues which include muscle trembling and neurological conditions. If your horse’s diet is deficient in calcium or there is too much phosphorus this can impair the

calcium's absorption. overtime the skeleton will weaken and this can cause many orthopaedic diseases. One of the most common all these diseases is big head. Young horses have a higher risk with developmental orthopaedic disorders, especially those younger than the age of two. Developmental orthopaedic disease can consist of osteochondrosis lesions, physitis, angular limb deformities and even wobbler syndrome. Symptoms of these conditions include pain, stiffness, joint swelling, lameness and unevenness. other conditions associated with an inverted calcium to phosphorus ratio can be hyperparathyroidism. It is essential to ensure that your horses are fed a well-balanced diet according to its age and work requirements. By managing your horse’s diet efficiently, you will ensure that

your calcium to phosphorus ratio is correct. Most horse feed manufacturers provide sufficient calcium and phosphorus within their feeds; however, the form of minerals is also a topic of discussion. I personally prefer the use of mineral tissue salts if you are supplementing with at vitamin and mineral formula as they are more readily absorbed and used by the horse. Mineral Tissue Salts: broadening the horse owner’s view about mineral and trace element use. Understanding the unrecognised therapeutic action and the importance of effective absorption and utilization using mineral salts is important. Some salts have a much wider action and use in the human and animal body than is recognized by most veterinary and medical authorities.

Knowledge of these wider uses means that these minerals can be used more selectively in the case of a need or symptoms. Much of the known yet overlooked therapeutic information regarding common natural mineral salts... such as silica, calcium fluoride, calcium sulphate, sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, iron phosphate, calcium phosphate, potassium phosphate, potassium chloride, magnesium phosphate, and zinc sulphate, comes from discoveries made in the 1800’s by German doctors, particularly by Dr. W. H.Schuessler in 1873. He obtained his data from homoeopathic clinical trials or ‘provings’ involving thousands of human volunteers, mostly university students, who imbibed both large and small doses of a variety of triturated (finely ground) mineral salts to establish optimal therapeutic effect. He found that the above minerals in small doses, often in combination with others, have repeatable therapeutic effects beyond the standard, widely known uses of these simple mineral salts. These minerals represent the core of the so-called ‘12 Tissue Salts’, originally described and utilized by Dr. Schuessler. Of utmost importance is the form of the salt in which the mineral is delivered to the animal. Nott all calciums are the same, not all irons are the same, etc.  Continued page 15

Finding the right balance with your feed  From page 14 Different salts of one mineral can have significantly different effects both in terms of absorption/ utilization of the actual mineral, and in terms of a specific therapeutic action. Let us take calcium as an example, it being the mineral needed in the largest quantities in animals. We note that calcium does not occur naturally as the metal calcium but occurs in nature as various salts. The main natural-occurring calcium salts are calcium carbonate, the most generic form, (chalk, limestone, marble, and dolomite); calcium sulphate (gypsum); calcium fluoride (fluorspar); and calcium phosphate (complexed as apatite and organic bonemeal). Calcium carbonate is the cheapest and one of the most common forms used in feeds and supplements but is poorly absorbed in many cases, compared to calcium phosphate (hydroxyapatite complex), which is well absorbed and utilized, perhaps because its animal source gives it the

Calcium sulphate, also is not well tolerated or absorbed as a bulk source of calcium. But, it also has therapeutic value in small-dispersed doses, particularly helpful in suppurative conditions such as chronic thick, yellow and lumpy mucus discharges, recurrent abscesses and poor healing after injury. Several laboratory prepared salts of calcium are also in wide use and some of these also show good absorption compared to calcium carbonate. Most useful of these are the chelated calcium’s,

combined to amino acids and other organic nutrients such as calcium orotate and calcium gluconate. However, these do not provide the inherent needed phosphate balance found in the organic calcium phosphate complex. Finding the right feed balance Make sure when you are looking for a supplement for your horse no matter what age, that you have read the label and the levels of calcium and phosphorus, but also the form of mineral that is being used. It is also important to remember that if you have a young growing horse you will need

to be making changes prior to maturity. Feeding hays such as alfalfa can be beneficial for young growing horses. Alfalfa contains an excellent level of calcium and the ratios of calcium to phosphorus are also excellent. Grains tend to be higher in phosphorus then calcium, so make sure that you are formulating the correct balance between the two. Aim for a diet suited to the species, one that is packed full of natural nutrients. Horses have evolved to consume a high roughage diet this means, pasture, hays some grain and possibly some oils, plus the correct added vitamins and minerals. Always contact a qualified nutritionist to assist with balancing your feed ration. Nutrition is essential for ongoing health and wellbeing, supporting skin, hoof growth, muscle, and joint health and gut microbiome. For more information email enq@hiform.com.au or phone 03 97756422

Radiographic proof in clinical results By Dr ANDREW WATTS BVSc Equine Veterinarian BONE Gold nutritional bone joint and collegen supplement was formulated to provide some of the essential amino acid requirements of collagen type I, II and III (found in bone and connective tissue) in addition to supporting the nitric oxide pathway which has been found to assist in the formation of bone callous postinjury. Veterinary surgeons have recommended that Bone Gold may assist with sore shins, tendon injuries, ligament injuries, osteoarthritis and post-surgery in horses and polyarthritis, geriatric osteoarthritis, and post-surgery in dogs. Here is a veterinary radiographic report on a horse with a fracture evident on the medial toe and after treatment and feeding Bone Gold during this period. RECOMMENDATIONS: Radiographic results as of the 17th Nov '21 show total resolution of the original fracture. XXXXXXX was reshod today utilising off an alloy shoe with a toe clip - inner circumference seated out to avoid any sole pressure. The horse can return to training. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further queries COMMENTS: Solar margin Type IV fractures of this magnitude have well-documented internationally published healing rates of 7 - 12 months. Full resolution of these fractures is rare as most often the fracture fragments are resorbed. Full resolution in a 3 month period was not anticipated. The horse was on Bone Gold 3 x scoops fed once per day for this period.

WHY SUPPLEMENT

OMEGA-3? ? Fresh grass. Horses love it! Nothing can beat it as the basis of most horse diets. It provides essential fibre, energy, protein, vitamins, some minerals and healthy fats that shine through in a healthy-looking coat. Unfortunately we can’t always give our horses green grass because cold weather, paddock size, laminitis risk, mud or drought often limit pasture availability.

Omega-3 is a fragile molecule easily destroyed if exposed to heat, oxygen or light. The resilient omega-6 molecules survive the hay making process unlike their fragile omega-3 cousins. Therefore we need to give horses a concentrated source of omega-3 fatty acids to modulate the immune system and prevent an excess of proinflammatory omega-6 in the diet.

Over winter, if we are to provide horses with food as good as grass, we need to feed quality grass hay and add vitamins, balancing minerals and essential omega-3 oils. When fresh grass is not available, the next best thing is dry grass or grass hay. Hay contains most of the minerals, protein and calories that were present in the pasture from which it was made. But the process of drying grass to make hay means that it loses much of the original vitamin and healthy omega-3 fatty acid content. Fresh grass contains around four times as much omega-3 oil as omega-6.

Page 20

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com

Until now, the best options for achieving omega 3:6 balance were: 1. Whole linseeds – but these are not always well digested; 2. Freshly ground linseeds – often not possible if agisting; 3. Fish oil – can be smelly and have palatability issues; 4. Algal DHA and EPA omega-3s; or 5. Cold-pressed and stabilised linseed oil – must be refrigerated and kept in a dark bottle.

There has to be a better way!

The Horse Report At Farmalogic we recognise the difficulties faced by horse owners in storing and using omega-3 sources. We have developed a palatable, stable, easy to store, resilient omega-3 supplement that can be kept in the feed shed and fed straight from the bag. We chose to make a dry supplement, easy to add to feeds ahead of time to suit the needs of owners working late, relying on others to feed or keeping horses on agistment. We scoured the world for the best quality omega-3 ingredient sources that are tough enough to survive normal horse feed shed conditions, and are proud to bring you….. FARMALOGIC OMEGA BALANCER: a rich source of stabilised omega 3 & 6 fatty acids from plant, algal and fish oil sources that stores safely in a feed shed environment.

WH Y IIS S HY BE TTER T HAN ETTER THAN L INSEEDS? LINSEEDS? It's convenient, ready-to-feed, easy to store and highly bioavailable. It has 3 forms of omega-3 fatty acids (ALA, DHA & EPA). Linseeds only have ALA. DHA & EPA are essential for normal brain, skin, eye, heart and sperm health. You need less for a great result. Just 30 grams of Omega Balancer is biologically equivalent to 200 g of linseeds or 80 ml of linseed oil. Farmalogic Omega Balancer is the ultimate coat and skin conditioner for an amazing natural show shine from the inside-out!

Ability Horsemanship There is an indescribable joy in riding at a full gallop along a beautiful stretch of coastline, taking a jump on a cross country course, competing at an event, or trail riding with a group of friends on the horse of your dreams. Whatever your discipline, those moments of connection and trust are what we all work for, but what if the stars don't align that day, and we're injured? Lose our confidence? What if our health deteriorates through unrelated illness or age? What happens if our bodies simply can't manage climbing up onto a horse for a ride? How do we satisfy our need to breathe in that horsey smell, feel that soft muzzle, brush that fine coat, get on and ride? The mechanics of mounting can be extremely challenging if you have physical limitations, and yet riding a horse, having them move you is so therapeutic! Stretching stiff hips, extending constricted muscle groups, developing core and pelvic floor strength, it all happens uniquely on the back of a horse. Their walk emulates our own, the steady, rhythmic motion provides our bodies with the muscle memories of our childhood, when things weren't quite so twisted up. Yet, to ride safely when you've been injured, lack confidence, balance or can't stretch, presents an enormous challenge. You need access to a specially trained horse, a safe riding area, an easy way of getting on the horse, and (without wanting to admit it) some help. Using a specially designed, easy access ramp for mounting, trained horses, and safe riding arena, Anna and her experienced team at Ability Horsemanship provide private sessions for people of all ages and abilities. Ability Horsemanship supports you into better mobility, inspires you to develop skills and moves your body, mind and heart. Call now 0416 936 030

The patience pole or tree of knowledge By TANJA KRAUS Let's talk about the 'patience pole'. The patience pole, or, the 'tree of knowledge' is an exercise in basically tying the horse up to a pole or a tree, where they will remain tied up for hours or days. Sometimes it's five hours, sometimes it's overnight, sometimes it's for days. It's a long-accepted practice and approach to teaching our horses to have patience, manners and the skill of standing tied. The result is a horse that is standing tied, appears to have 'respect' and 'manners'. But why does it work and what psychological and psychological impact is it having on horses ? The patience pole restricts our horse’s movement - both from a perspective of moving from one place to another, but also from the perspective of lowering his head, scratching, self-soothing, and having a full range of motion - for an extended period of time. Of course all horse owners

Teach your horse to safely tie up and you will have a better, well-balanced horse to enjoy.

restrict movement in this way when trailering, riding and tying - and our horses must have this skill but the patience pole is designed to extend this to the extreme. When we look at our horses survival mechanisms - a horse’s five steps to survival include: 1. Do the opposite of what a predator asks

!" #$%&! ' ( ) * ) ' ( +, ( -' . / # (( ( ) * ) ' (

2. Flight 3. Fight 4. Push into pressure 5. Accept my own death The act of tying a horse to a 'patience pole' causes him to go through these processes - and eventually accept that they cannot escape, cannot fight, cannot push and are going to die here. The act of not behind able to scratch or comfort themselves, defend themselves, all cause a 'shut down' coping strategy to kick in. The more we learn about our horse’s physiology, the more we must reconsider these types of practices. A horse, when stressed, is in sympathetic nervous system fight or flight - and when we restrict that process from playing out, we prevent learning, and growth. For a horse to come back into parasympathetic nervous system

- rest and digest - he must move his feet, graze, and lower his head - all prevented by the 'patience pole'. When a horse is unable to process from sympathetic to parasympathetic as nature intended, he enters 'freeze' as a protective mechanism. This article isn't 'anti tying' - my horses will happily stand tied for hours and if they were in an emergency and had to they can all night or all day. But I don't want to take anything from them. I want to educate them, nurture them to become confident, mentally and emotionally balanced citizens. There are ways to teach your horse to safely and confidently tie without 'letting him figure it out for himself' and breaking him mentally and emotionally. It just takes a little bit more time, effort and skill than just tying him to a post and walking away.

The Horse Report

Encouraging people to learn & improve their skills By reataranch.com.au Anthony Desreaux grew up in the Corner Country of outback N.S.W on Mount Wood Station 27kms East of Tibooburra. Horses have always been his passion and he spent all of his youth with his horses. Working years in stock camps and riding many nervous and unconfident horses he grew to realise there must be a better way than what they were doing. Around this time Gordon McKinlay came to teach horsemanship and from there on Anthony had seen a small taste of what was possible with horses. Although he has a lifetime of horse experience, it’s been the past 20 years that Anthony has taken his skills and advanced his skills by riding more and more horses daily from young colts, older rank horses and horses that are just amazing to ride right from the get go. Having spent time in the USA riding under the tuition of Ray Hunt, Buck Brannaman, Craig Johnson, Pat Parelli and with

Anthony’s clinics give people a great learning opportunity

some amazing horsemen who are making their mark in the USA, Anthony is putting his skills and talent into helping other people who are starting on the same journey he once commenced. The journey of horsemanship never ends. Although, Anthony has competed successfully in rodeo, gymkanas & on occasion helped ride a racehorse or 2, his Horsemanship & his teachings are not about being a good competitor in any horse sport or a well-known horse breaker.

It is about being given a horse, any horse and getting that horse to trust you, accept you and all your gadgets of saddlery and still do what you want, when you want without fear, intimidation, anger or cruelty. Horses can make the greatest partner if you just give them a chance and show them a good road to follow. Anthony resigned from managing a large cattle station in far Western Queensland in May 2015. Here he used horses to muster cattle and teach his staff how to start young horses, deal

with a horse that may have problems and have horses enjoying doing a job. Teaching horsemanship was a part time job between his mustering schedule, but has become his full time career after students just kept asking for more clinics. Anthony’s clinics give people a great learning and equal opportunity environment. Encouraging people to learn & continually improve on their skills with horses. Anthony along with his wife and 3 children want to open the door to more people wanting to get a safer, calmer, friendly start with the horses in their lives. If you are looking to compete, Anthony can certainly give you the tools to get your horse to its optimal level. There is no competition, no rush through the schedule. It’s just taking the time that it takes to create the partnership you want with your equine friends. Once you have that then you’re unlimited to what you & your horse can achieve.

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.

These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, environmental management will also so assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

Watch Me Dance sets all time WA record By MAGIC MILLIONS Group winning racemare Watch Me Dance is heading to Victoria after smashing the all time Western Australian auction record price when selling at the Perth Winter Sale. Victorian trainer Lloyd Kennewell went to $600,000 to secure the outstanding fouryear-old who was presented by Western Breeders Alliance, as agent for Commercial Bloodstock. The price easily surpassed the previous state record of $420,000 for the broodmare prospect Ellicazoom at the corresponding sale four years ago. The daughter of I'm All the Talk, who was a $34,000 Perth Yearling Sale buy for Noel Carter's Commercial Bloodstock, earned a tick under $900,000 during her racing career with trainer Steve Wolfe. Such was the class of Watch Me Dance, she was crowned the Champion TwoYear-Old and Three-Year-Old of her year in Western Australia. She was raced during her career by an all female ownership group, being an early Magic Millions WA Racing Women aspirant. "She's got a great race pedigree and on the market she looked pretty good value," Kennewell said of Watch Me Dance. "In the east she could have made more.

Group winning racemare Watch Me Dance is heading to Victoria after smashing the all time Western Australian auction record price when selling at the Perth Winter Sale.

"She will race on. I will train her in Victoria." Kennewell said Watch Me Dance will be given a break before future race plans are drawn up. "The plan is to race her for 12 months before heading to stud,” he said. “I bought her for a good client and we're excited to get her. “"I liked her as a type as well - she's a nice, sweet filly. “She's had a bit of recent racing so she will have a break when over east."

Earlier in the day local trainer Luke Fernie went to $200,000 to secure the day's top selling yearling - the Russian Revolution half brother to Kissonallforcheeks. The latest youngster from the stakes winning and good producer Rosie Rocket, the colt was offered as part of the Dawson Stud draft. All up across the day over $1.9 million was traded on a great mix of thoroughbreds - from weanlings to broodmares, yearlings and racehorses.

What makes Rose-Hip Vital Equine stand out in a cluttered market? There are in fact many reasons. It all starts

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
