The Horse Report Equestrian athletes arrive in Berlin for Olympics

The Special Olympics is a global organisation that promotes the inclusion and empowerment of people with intellectual disabilities through sports.

Every four years, athletes from around the world gather to compete in the Special Olympics World Games. This year, four Australian equestrian athletes are competing in the World Games held in Berlin, Germany.

The four Aussies are set to compete in a variety of events, including Dressage (Walk, Walk/Trot), Jumping and Equitation.

The four athletes who have just arrived in Berlin to compete are Karen Messmer (16), from Rockhampton; Oliver King (16) from Brisbane; Jaye Barnesby-Buie (20) from Perth; and Isabella Parisi (23) from the Gold Coast. All four riders are set to compete at their first Games and will each compete on borrowed horses in three events.

Karen Oliver and Isabella will be competing in Dressage, English Trail and Equitation, and Jaye in Dressage, Equitation and Equitation Jumping. These athletes have been training hard for the Games and are excited to compete against others from around the world.

They are proud to represent Australia and hope to bring home medals.

The Special Olympics World Games are a celebration of the athleticism, determination and spirit of people with intellectual disabilities and these four young Australian riders are a testament to this. Recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Special Olympics World Games is anticipated to host 300,000 spectators this year.

The Horse Report Feeding for a fertile and healthy stallion

Come winter, breeding stallions are ramping up for the season that lies ahead.

While maintenance of fertility is of utmost importance in the care of breeding stallions, they must also be kept looking their bestsound, energetic and disease free.

As with many aspects of horse care, a holistic approach is required to achieve these goals.

MAINTAINING FERTILITY

Astallion’s level of fertility is affected both by his genetics and his past and present environment.

Good nutrition will never be able to make an infertile stallion fertile. However poor nutrition may limit an otherwise fertile stallion’s effectiveness in the breeding barn.

To maintain maximum fertility in your stallions, a balanced diet that meets his energy, protein, vitamin and mineral requirements must be fed.

Using a well-formulated concentrate feed or a quality vitamin and mineral balancer pellet or supplement, together with high quality forage, is generally all that is needed to meet requirements.

Ensuring the diet is well-fortified with antioxidants is essential for maintaining maximum fertility.

Astudy by Contri et al (2011) found that stallions supplemented with 1500 mg of vitamin E, 2.5 mg of organic selenium and 360 mg of zinc per day had improved sperm characteristics including increased average path velocity, straightness, improved membrane integrity, progressive motility and reduced numbers of sperm with abnormal morphology.

The Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio in the diet may also have some bearing on the fertility of stallions, particularly those that will be used for the collection of cooled and frozen semen for shipping.

Sperm with a higher Omega 3 to 6 ratio (or more specifically a higher docosahexaenoic acid or DHAto docosapentaenoic acid, or DPA ratio) appear to handle the stress of cooling or freezing with less damage, giving them a greater capacity to fertilise an egg.

High forage, low concentrate diets that contain more Omega 3 than Omega 6 give stallions the best natural chance of having sperm with more

Omega 3 fatty acids.

HOW DO I LOOK

?

Stallions need to look their best to attract the mare owner’s eye.

By the time a stallion reaches breeding age nothing can be done to change overall conformation, but muscling and topline, coat shine and a fit but well-conditioned appearance can all be manipulated through nutrition. Feeding a well-balanced diet that contains high quality protein for maintaining muscle mass, oils with both Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for coat and skin health and a full array of vitamins and minerals will keep stallions looking their best.

STAYING SOUND

Breeding, like most physical activities, promotes a degree of wear and tear on a stallion’s musculoskeletal system.

Diet has a huge impact on the health of a stallion’s joints and bones. Trace mineral and vitamin deficiencies as well as low quality protein in the diet can contribute to joint and bone degeneration.

While many stallions are supplemented with equine joint formula’s as a preventative strategy, using joint supplements can only be effective if they are fed in conjunction with a wellbalanced diet that meets requirements for protein, vitamins and minerals.

The ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acids in the diet may also play a role in joint health, with high Omega 6 diets tending to aggravate

joint inflammation.

High grain diets that are high in Omega 6 fatty acids should be avoided in preference to forage dominant diets higher in Omega 3.

STAYING HEALTHY

All too often good stallions are lost to colic or laminitis.

While there are many causes of both these diseases, some are easily avoided through good nutrition.

The risk of both colic and laminitis can be lowered by feeding a high forage, low grain diet, where an absolute minimum of 1.5% of bodyweight (1.5 kg/100 kg of bodyweight, 1.5 lb/ 100 lb bodyweight) is fed per day of forage.

Apreferable minimum forage intake is closer to 2% of bodyweight which will ensure a well filled and hydrated gut environment.

In addition, where grains are fed, only cooked and very digestible grains should be fed to stallions to lower the risk of undigested grains entering the hindgut where they will be rapidly fermented, causing acidosis.

Hindgut acidosis is known to cause both colic and laminitis. Any stallions prone to laminitis should not be fed any grain or grain/grain byproduct-based feed.

Use FeedXLto steer clear of dangerous ingredients.

To keep stallions healthy they should not be allowed to become sedentary and overweight or obese as this also increases the risk of insulin resistance and laminitis.

 From page 4

And it increases joint wear and tear. The maintenance of a regular exercise program and a moderate to good body condition will keep insulin sensitivity high and the risk of insulin induced laminitis low and reduce the stress placed on their joints.

Regular exercise will also help to keep stallions fit and better able to cope with a rigorous breeding schedule.

HOW MUCH TO FEED

How much feed a stallion needs on a daily basis to maintain the desired body condition is going to depend on the individual stallion, whether he is exercised, how much voluntary exercise he does, how many mares he covers in a season and what his maintenance energy requirement is.

Some stallions are constantly on a diet while others are almost impossible to keep enough weight on.

As such, the amount you feed each day depends on the stallion.

For stallions that maintain their weight easily, a forage-based diet (pasture and/or hay) supplemented with a high-quality forage balancer pellet fed at less than 1 kg/day with a small amount of oil to assist with coat shine may be all he needs.

For stallions that need a higher energy diet to hold their weight, well-formulated and fully fortified complete feeds or high energy ingredients mixed with your own supplement can be used to increase their energy intake. Stallions should be fed enough to maintain them at a condition score of 5 to 6 (on the Henneke 1 to 9 scale) where their ribs cannot be seen while stationary, but are easily felt with light to moderate pressure.

When formulating stallion diets, it is always a good idea to maintain flexibility by having at least one component of the diet that you can increase or decrease according to the stallions energy needs on a day to day basis without messing up the balance of the diet.

For example if you have a base diet that consists of 2 kg of concentrate feed that contains all of the high quality protein, vitamins and minerals, including anti-oxidants the stallion needs,

you can then have a high energy ingredient like cooked corn, barley, oats or a high energy fibre like beet pulp that can be increased or reduced in the diet according to how a stallion is looking or feeling each day.

FEED WITH CARE

As stallion owners are well aware, stallions are valuable animals and as such they need to be fed with utmost care.

Weigh feed ingredients to ensure they are fed accurately and know how to adjust the diet safely to cater to an individual stallions needs without unbalancing the overall nutrient profile..

Make sure nutrients important for fertility, including antioxidants are fed at optimum levels and perhaps most importantly of all, don’t forget the forage. Failure to accurately feed enough forage may put your stallion at a higher risk of colic and

could exacerbate fertility and joint issues. The more pasture and hay your stallion gets, the better.

Using FeedXLto put together stallion rations makes the process of getting all of this right.

The Horse Report

HAY IS LIKE YOUR HORSE’S HEATER

Do you ever wonder what is best to feed in really cold weather to help your horse stay warm?

Well, the answer is hay or any type of high fibre forage really. The fibre in hay and other forages is digested in your horse’s hindgut via the process of bacterial fermentation. Aby-product of this fermentation process is HEAT!

So by feeding extra forage you are giving your horse’s resident population of bacteria more fibre to ferment… which in-turn means they will generate more heat and help to keep your horse warm. Neat huh! Just keep in mind though that you can overdo it.

Feeding more than about 3% of your horse’s bodyweight in feed per day (or more than 3 lb/100 lb BW; 3 kg/100 kg BW) will have the effect of increasing passage rate through the gut. So while there would be more fibre for the bacteria to ferment the fibre would spend less time in the hindgut, with less time for fermentation and heat production. Catch-22!

OMEGA-3? WHY SUPPLEMENT WHY SUPPLEMENT

Fresh grass. Horses love it! Nothing can beat it as the basis of most horse diets. It provides essential fibre, energy, protein, vitamins, some minerals and healthy fats that shine through in a healthy-looking coat.

Unfortunately we can’t always give our horses green grass because cold weather, paddock size, laminitis risk, mud or drought often limit pasture availability.

Omega-3 is a fragile molecule easily destroyed if exposed to heat, oxygen or light. The resilient omega-6 molecules survive the hay making process unlike their fragile omega-3 cousins.

Therefore we need to give horses a concentrated source of omega-3 fatty acids to modulate the immune system and prevent an excess of proinflammatory omega-6 in the diet.

Over winter, if we are to provide horses with food as good as grass, we need to feed quality grass hay and add vitamins, balancing minerals and essential omega-3 oils.

When fresh grass is not available, the next best thing is dry grass or grass hay.

Hay contains most of the minerals, protein and calories that were present in the pasture from which it was made. But the process of drying grass to make hay means that it loses much of the original vitamin and healthy omega-3 fatty acid content.

Fresh grass contains around four times as much omega-3 oil as omega-6.

Until now, the best options for achieving omega 3:6 balance were:

Whole linseeds – but these are not always well digested; Freshly ground linseeds – often not possible if agisting; Fish oil – can be smelly and have palatability issues; Algal DHA and EPA omega-3s; or Cold-pressed and stabilised linseed oil – must be refrigerated and kept in a dark bottle.

There has to be a better way!

Tips on feeding cereal grains to our horses

BENEFITS OF OATS FOR HORSES

It has been known for a very long time that oats and horses just seem to get along well. Of all of the cereal grains we can feed to horses, oats is the only grain that can be fed safely without being cooked. Why? Horses are able to digest a large portion of the starch that oats contains in their small intestine. Which means only small amounts of starch will be deposited into the hindgut.

OATS VS OTHER GRAINS

If we feed corn or barley uncooked, only about 25% of the starch they contain is digested in the small intestine. The rest is fermented in the hindgut. When starch gets into the hindgut, starch fermenting bacteria ferment it very quickly and cause a build-up of acid and create a condition called hindgut acidosis which has all sort of negative consequences for your horse (including changes in behaviour and laminitis). The balance between fibre fermenting and starch fermenting bacteria is also put out of balance… the ‘good’fibre fermenting bacterial populations are reduced while the less desirable starch fermenting bacteria increase in numbers.

All of this we have known for a while. More recent research however (Harlow, 2015) has also shown that corn starch is potentially

more of a problem in the hindgut than oat starch. This researcher incubated corn and oat starch in test tubes with faecal material from horses and found (briefly) that corn starch caused a significantly greater increase in starch fermenting bacteria than the oat starch and gave rise to higher lactic acid production.

DOUBLE SAFETY CATCH IN OATS

So oats seems to have a double safety catch built in for our horses.

First, most of its starch appears to be digested in the small intestine.

Second, if some starch does end up in the hindgut it appears less likely to upset the hindgut bacterial populations present there, which should mean it allows your horse to maintain a healthy population of the ‘good’ fibre fermenting bacteria.

So if you need to feed a grain and either don’t have access to or don’t like ‘cooked’

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU BOIL BARLEY ?

Cooking cereal grains before you feed them to your horse is very important.

It improves how easy they are for your horse to digest and drastically reduces the chance of them causing negative effects in your horse’s hindgut.

So if you are cooking your own grains, how long should you cook them for?

Are you ready for the answer, it is really very technical …

Cook grains until they are soft and squishy! Just cook them with lots of water until they are easy to squash between your thumb and index finger. Once they are soft like this their digestibility will be very good.

Want to know why you should cook grains before you feed them? It is all here: ‘Grains for Horses: Cooked or Uncooked?‘

P.S. Don’t just soak them until they are soft, this won’t improve digestion… you must use heat!

The Horse Report Treating White Line Disease in horses

What is white line disease?

White line disease in horses is caused by an invasion of bacteria and fungi that destroy hoofwall tissue.

These malicious organisms enter the hoof via an old nail hole, a hoof crack or any other weak point.

Once inside the hoof, the infection erodes and eats away the connected layers of tissue (laminae) that support a healthy hoof. The result creates a cavity/void within the interior of the hoof.

What causes white line disease?

Unfortunately, the cause of white line disease not always that open-and-shut.

Many horses have a separation in their hoof wall and do not develop WLD.

So it's hard to say what causes the disease to develop. Wet living conditions may play a role, although WLD can also occur in horses in arid conditions.

Why is it called "white line disease"?

This disease generally travels "north" inside the hoof and you cannot see it as you could with a typical infection. The only aspect of white line disease that can be "seen" is a powdery, crumbly off-white residue that is readily apparent at trim time.

This powdery matter is the disintegration of the white line area and is the result of internal hoof separation and damage. Hence it would appear that only the white line is damaged but this is just evidence of the deeper infection/problem.

The organisms responsible for white-line disease are anaerobic (i.e., they live in the absence of oxygen), so the interior of a horse hoof is the ideal place for them to thrive and go undetected. Horses are rarely lame until the disease progresses into a

more advanced stage.

It's a sneaky disease that, caught in the early stages, is quickly and easily treatable.

Stopping the progression of the syndrome immediately after its discovery is critical in treating the disease.

If it's a minor case of white line disease, treatment has traditionally been for the vet or farrier to dig out the infected area and then treat the area with a topical treatment.

Preventing white line disease

Even though white line disease is a common problem, it's not to be taken lightly.

In more advanced stages, you will be dealing with months of hoof repair and treatment. Although it's more prevalent in warm, moist climates, it's not uncommon in arid conditions. It affects shod, as well as unshod feet. It can occur in horses being kept the cleanest conditions. Regular hoof care and good hygiene are the best defense against the disease. Disinfecting any cavities with a good antifungal/antibacterial product can help ward off infection.

Flax Seed Oil provides the richest (almost 60%) natural source ofOmega 3, an essential fatty acid (EFA) which is not generally present in equine foods. Like all animals, horses cannot manufacture this essential fatty acid which is so important for their overall health.

Metabolic conditions in horses

The common consensus when managing a horse with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) is to supply the horse less feed and exercise more.

However reducing the feed intake and increasing exercise may not necessarily be the problem solver.

There is another aspect to weight loss which has nothing to do with the feed intake but more to do with hormones more specifically. Hormones such as cortisol and insulin will dictate how much body fat your horse will store.

When a horse undergoes stress, it instantly tells the body to hold on to the fat. This is very similar to chemical changes that occur during a famine.

Horses will generally feel safe based on their natural instincts in this situation. In simple terms the horse's body is then tricked into gaining weight not losing it.

Horses, as we know, are strict herbivores and require a high level of constant roughage throughout the day.

It may make sense to feed less to a horse that is suffering from EMS or Laminitis however, by feeding the horse less contradicts the natural instincts of the horse.

Removing feeds that perhaps may be quite fattening is a common-sense approach, but to restrict the amount of roughage that the horse has access to, whether this be hay or pasture is detrimental to the horse's health. The anatomy and physiology of the horse has not changed much throughout the evolution process over thousands of years. The animal has simply become larger, but they are still perpetual grazing animals that require high levels of roughage. Not allowing your horse to consume enough roughage in a day will create more stress not less.

When a horse is grazing or consuming hay,

this process produces saliva and it neutralises the acid that is constantly flowing into his stomach.

The horse's stomach should never be empty as he needs roughage flowing through the digestive tract to keep the muscles active. If this does not happen the muscles tend to get loose or flabby this can also weaken the intestinal tract and can create an unhealthy situation which could lead to complications. The hindgut or caecum must be full for the digested material to leave the horse’s body. If horses are not being provided enough roughage per day it may also lead to behavioural issues such as chewing fences, trees or even consuming their own manure. When horses experience high stress levels which includes pain or intense exercise or even being transported to an event, cortisol levels are increased.

Horses that have a restriction on the amount of roughage available to them can lead to pain within the stomach or anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract.

It has been well-documented that a high percentage of domestic horses being fed a hard feed develop ulcers during their lifetime. It stands to reason that ulcerations will occur very quickly if hay is withheld. This can be for even as little as one or two

hours, because the stomach continually releases acid it makes the horse’s digestive system quite vulnerable.

When cortisol levels increase due to a restriction of feed intake, these elevated levels stimulate the liver to derive glucose from glycogen stores, this can result in insulin being secreted from the pancreas.

Horses that suffer from EMS which includes a multitude of equine metabolic syndrome cases often the vet will recommend to lock the horse up overnight, limit the amount of feed and perhaps even where a grazing muzzle during the day.

If you consider that the horse is a perpetual grazing animal and requires a constant level of roughage throughout the day, you can understand very quickly that this will become a stressor for the horse.

If your horse is boxed overnight and you are supplying hay, when you arrive in the morning to check and feed your horse, your horse’s hay nets may be empty.

The horse may have finished his hay two hours earlier or five minutes earlier but at the end of the day, your horse’s hay nets or slow feeders should never be empty. Reducing the amount of intake of roughage throughout the day will not allow your horse to lose body fat, instead your horse is more likely to lose muscle tone.

Horses that lose weight in this way don't have any change in their body condition score, neck etc.

What does tend happen is that longissimus dorsi muscle thickness is reduced and the metabolic rate can be affected.

So it may appear that your horse has lost weight but in actual fact that is not the case. Some studies have shown that if the horse is not deprived of hay overnight they show a much greater degree of insulin resistance. So, keeping those hay nets full until you arrive the next morning is extremely important to reduce the risk of physical pain and discomfort.

Your horse's brain will begin to tell him to hold on to the fat, insulin levels will increase and when insulin levels increase the horse is not going to burn fat.

The Horse Report

Roughage is essential in your horse’s diet

 From page 18

Other studies have shown that horses that only have access to hay and no grazing have an increased risk of insulin resistance as opposed to those horses who could graze on pasture, insulin resistance decreased. The explanation - the horses were also allowed to move around freely whilst grazing.

Ahorse that does not have constant access to pasture or hay, means that the stomach will be left empty for several hours and will have an increased level of cortisol.

Horses who have empty stomachs for a period of hours tend to eat their feed when it arrives very quickly this is not a normal way for the horse to exist.

When food is limited horses, tend to be waiting for the next meal.

The horse's metabolic rate can also be affected if there is a restriction of the level of roughage being fed during the day.

Not providing your horse sufficient roughage throughout the day causes the horse’s body to break down tissue for glucose. The metabolic rate will then slow down even further as muscle is lost.

The Equine Smart Gut test can look at the horse's faecal sample to provide you with an insight into the levels of bacteria in the horse’s gut microbiome and the ratios.

It is important to be aware that there are no good or bad bacteria, it is actually about the ratios of the bacteria contained in the gut microbiome.

There are seven major gut phylums and within these gut phylums there are many different bacteria species.

The Equine Smart Gut test can determine several issues relating to digestive health, stress, inflammation, immune function, effects on skin and coat condition and also more serious conditions such as leaky gut syndrome, ulcers etc. firmicutes is the most common gut phylum, this makes sense because this phylum is directly related to consuming a high fibre diet.

To assist your horse to lose weight it is

important to provide the horse with free choice roughage that matches the normal natural environment for the horse. Exercise is obviously very important for each horse, reduce the amount of concentrates that are being fed or look at a feed such as Harry’s Choice that is very high in natural roughage suited to the species.

Lowering the amount of fat intake in the horse's diet will be an advantage, however, all horses require some fat in the diet.

I would highly recommend having your hay tested to ensure that is low enough in sugar and starch and calories.

It would be also advantageous to have your pasture tested and your soil.

I always encourage horse owners, trainers and riders to have their horses out on pasture as often as possible for this is a natural state for the horse and will encourage a healthy, mentally sound horse.

If your horse has access to roughage 24/7, whether it be in the form of pasture or hays he can then make his own choice when to walk away and return to his hay or grazing.

This also encourages the horse to be more relaxed and will also help with the metabolic rate. I do not recommend using grazing muzzles for horses this can create a high level of stress.

If you must use a grazing muzzle never use it beyond two hours maximum.

I believe it is incredibly stressful and quite dangerous.

Today there are many different options for slow feeders, they include large hay nets with small holes, Porta grazers, there are a few good options that you can purchase online.

If you don't have a large hay nets then provide at least two nets, particularly if the horse is being left overnight with little grazing or being boxed.

The golden rule is to make sure your horse has access to either pasture or roughage 24hour is the day.

The golden rule: ensure the horse has access to continual roughage. For information Phone 03 97756422 enq@hiform.com.au

“BYE BYE FLY”

QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE

ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.

Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:

Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.

It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and Camphor oil” which naturally relieves itchy skin.

These significant benefits are also enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can also be applied to surface wounds, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help prevent irritation and possible infection by nuisance insects.

Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extensive field experience has proven KURITCH to be a most effective solution for both preventing and healing distressing skin conditions caused by biting insects.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

Midges breed near stagnant water. As they don’t fly more than a few hundred metres from their breeding area, housing or paddocking your horses more than 500 metres from those areas will reduce their exposure to the flies.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies.

Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites.

Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.

The tree of knowledge or patience pole

The patience pole, or, the 'tree of knowledge' is an exercise in basically tying the horse up to a pole or a tree, where they will remain tied up for hours or days.

Sometimes it's five hours, sometimes it's overnight, sometimes it's for days.

The Horse Report Trainers feature

It's a long-accepted practice and approach to teaching our horses to have patience, manners and the skill of standing tied. The result is a horse that is standing tied, appears to have 'respect' and 'manners'. But why does it work and what psychological and psychological impact is it having on horses ?

The patience pole restricts our horse’s movement - both from a perspective of moving from one place to another, but also from the perspective of lowering his head, scratching, self-soothing, and having a full range of motion - for an extended period of time.

Of course all horse owners restrict movement in this waywhen trailering, riding and tying - and our horses must have this skill but the patience pole is designed to extend this to the extreme.

When we look at our horses survival mechanisms - a horse’s five steps to survival include:

1. Do the opposite of what a predator asks

2. Flight

3. Fight

4. Push into pressure

5. Accept my own death

The act of tying a horse to a 'patience pole' causes him to go through these processes - and eventually accept that they can-

not escape, cannot fight, cannot push and are going to die here. The act of not behind able to scratch or comfort themselves, defend themselves, all cause a 'shut down' coping strategy to kick in.

The more we learn about our horse’s physiology, the more we must reconsider these types of practices.

Ahorse, when stressed, is in sympathetic nervous systemfight or flight - and when we restrict that process from playing out, we prevent learning, and growth.

For a horse to come back into parasympathetic nervous system - rest and digest - he must move his feet, graze, and lower his head - all prevented by the 'patience pole'.

When a horse is unable to process from sympathetic to parasympathetic as nature intended, he enters 'freeze' as a

protective mechanism.

This article isn't 'anti tying' - my horses will happily stand tied for hours and if they were in an emergency and had to they can all night or all day. But I don't want to take anything from them. I want to educate them, nurture them to become confident, men-

tally and emotionally balanced citizens.

There are ways to teach your horse to safely and confidently tie without 'letting him figure it out for himself' and breaking him mentally and emotionally. It just takes a little bit more time, effort and skill than just tying him to a post and walking away.

Expression of interest for Qld Coaches

Are you interested in helping riders around the world get affordable instruction, enhance their partnership with their horse, and achieve their riding goals?

Ride iQ is seeking contributions to its equestrian curriculum and lesson programs from certified coaches across a variety of disciplines. Coaches are paid per lesson contributed (lessons can be 8 minutes - 45 minutes in duration).

The Horse Report Trainers feature

Coaches record while they’re riding, so they should be able to record while getting their daily rides done. Ride iQ is only as great as our coaches and team. We are a young company, but we are flexible on compensation to get the right people involved.

About Ride iQ

Ride iQ is a mobile app with hundreds of on-demand, listen-whileyou-ride audio lessons taught by 21 incredible coaches (Olympic medalists, Olympic team coaches, and other top performers in dressage, show jumping, eventing, equestrian sports psychology etc.). Ride iQ exists to make schooling rides more productive and more fun. Ride iQ is building a team of top Australian coaches to help us create audio-based content that

specifically caters to riders here. Ride iQ is looking to recruit additional EAcertified coaches and judges to contribute dressage, jumping, and eventing curriculum and Australian-focused content to the app.

At its core, Ride iQ is about equity and education. All equestrians deserve access to correct instruction, and we aim to improve experiences and performances of both horses and riders in a significant way through expanded access. Horsemanship is paramount, and Ride iQ’s approach is aimed at developing well-rounded riders with fundamental skills that can

be used in and out of the arena. “We spend so much of time riding on our own and sometimes we can lack inspiration and even enthusiasm. Ride IQ gives heaps of ideas and learnings on how we can work our horse each day. It also gives you a community of like-minded people to interact with and share your journey with. Not to mention access to experts in so many different areas like competition preparation and dressage test riding.” – Prue Barrett, Ride iQ Coach, 5* event rider, Equestrian Australia National Performance Director for Eventing Ride iQ chooses coaches based on

their credibility - people who have produced skilled, capable riders at all levels; a reputation for exceptional horsemanship; excellent communication skills; and a belief in the Ride iQ concept/interest in being involved in this educational platform.

Fibre provides root structure, similar to grass roots in turf, to existing or new sand-based riding surfaces. Fibre improves the surface stability, therefore the horse will work ‘on top’ of the surface rather than ‘through’ it.

Our Flexi Fibre is a mixture of polypropylene, polyester and nylon Fibres which are the base material to all of our surfaces worldwide and similar to all other top surface suppliers. We

The Horse Report Australia tops medal tally at Virtus Games

The Australian Team was the most successful team in Equestrian at the sixth Virtus Global Games held in Vichy, France.

They performed outstandingly to win not only the Team gold medal, but also two gold and one silver medal in individual events.

The Australians (pictured) knew it was always going to be a gigantic challenge for the three Aussie riders as they were having to ride borrowed horses. In this sport, the unique connection and understanding between rider and horse is key. The Aussies had to create that magical relationship over two days. But the three riders, Andrew Driffield, Sarah Sherwood and Sui Watts, never doubted that wonderful “have a go” attitude.

The first day of competition started on a great note, with the Australian riders Andrew Driffield, Sarah Sherwood and Sui Watts winning the Team gold medal ahead of Spain and France. In the individual events the following day, Sui Watts riding Bonni won a gold medal in the Grade IV Novice A- II2 division, Andrew Driffield won a gold in the Grade IV Novice A- II1 riding Volpino, and Sarah Sherwood won a silver medal in the Grade IV Novice A- II1, also riding Bonni.

Amazingly, this was all done on borrowed horses, whereas the other medal-winning teams were riding their own horses. Head of the Australian team, Robyn Smith says, “Twenty years in the making – it was so emotional so see Australia competing for the first time.. Andrew Driffield dreamed of doing this his whole riding life and it has finally come to fruition at 49.”

Australia opened its campaign in the Dressage competition with riders, Andrew

riding Volpino and Sarah Sherwood and Sui Watts sharing Bonni.

Both had such excellent rides, although there was strong competition from the experienced Spanish riders, that they were never going to accept less than gold. Coach Mary Longden was overwhelmed with the riders’success. “This result is a tribute to the years of lobbying for equity of opportunity”.

The Horse Report What makes Rose-Hip Vital Equine stand out in a cluttered market?

There are in fact many reasons. It all starts with the humble Rosehip, the berry-like fruit of the wild rose bush species Rosa Canina. A wholefood known to be one of nature’s richest sources of natural vitamin C. A superfood containing 8 naturally occurring vitamins (including C, E, B1 and B6) and 23 minerals (including iron, copper, zinc and magnesium), essential fatty acids (omegas 3, 6 and 9),

You may already know rosehips are often fed to horses for immune system support and a improved circulation and improved digestive function. So you’re probably wondering what makes Rose-Hip Vital® so special?

Rose-Hip Vital® is made from Rosehips manufactured with patented extraction and drying processes which isolate and activate a galactolipid (fatty acid) called GOPO®. GOPO® has clinically proven anti-

The patented processes also concentrate and preserve the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, transforming Rose-Hip Vital® into a product that is both in a category all on its own, and across many; It’s a joint antioxidant and a nutritional supplement. It delivers noticeable improvements to mobility, mood, condition, willingness to move forward, performance and recovery while reducing improving general health and wellbeing, and boosting immunity.

Rose-Hip Vital® is a clinically proven plantand rich source of natural vitamin C. There is no product like it. Unlike other joint supplements, Rose-Hip Vital® is 100% plant-

Rose-Hip Vital® is safe for long term use and it does not swab. It can be used alongside conventional treatments and supplements as well as potentially replacing or reducing the medication.

Horses like it so much, even the fussiest of eaters become more enthusiastic about their feed once Rose-Hip Vital is added. So while Rose-Hip Vital Equine has become a highly use, it also has become highly recommended for improving general health and wellbeing, improving performance and maintaining healthy joints.

How does Rose-Hip Vital® Equine lengthen the lifetime of a working horse?

Vital is comprehensive. There are in excess of placebo controlled clinical trials on people, dogs and horses mainly focusing on antithe unique compound GOPO.

To many people, antioxidants and anti-aging go hand-in-hand. Antioxidants are talked about as the antidote to cell-damaging free radicals. Exercise and the associated stress and increase in oxygen consumption are linked to an increased production of free radicals. When the production of free radicals overwhelms the body’s antioxidant defences, oxidative stress can occur with subsequent research shows horses need natural vitamin C to help block toxic free radical activity, which causes damage throughout the body including joints and cartilage.

Some white blood cells in the body contain granulocytes which enable them to ‘clean’

bacteria in it. Too many of these white blood cells wear down tissue cartilage. In large numbers they can also produce chemical enzymes and toxic freeradicals which cause even more tissue damage. Excess accumulation of white blood cells combined with the release of chemical substances cause’s joint pain

The more becomes, the more the white blood cells are attracted to it –a painful cycle.

protects cartilage. This means it helps to delay the onset of arthritic changes or slow down further cartilage degeneration if it already exists.

In short, if you want to extend the lifetime of your working horse, feed it a natural antirich source of natural vitamin C. Rose-Hip Vital® Equine is your only option, and the results speak for themselves.

The Horse Report

Magic Millions women are influencing racing

Supplied by MAGIC MILLIONS

Magic Millions Racing Women (MMRW) is a world first to promote the participation of women in the thoroughbred industry.

MMRW was established in 2012 and now offers $750,000 in bonus prizemoney annually in the $3m The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic and $3m Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas feature races, shared by horses owned wholly by women.

Zara Tindall MBE, Patron of Magic Millions Racing Women and world-class equestrienne, continues to champion the initiative year round globally and in January each year at The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Carnival on the Gold Coast.

"Katie Page-Harvey had a vision back in 2012 and it was the first of its kind in the world,: Ms Tindall said.

"The pathway for greater involvement of women in the industry was so needed, and the success of Magic Millions Racing Women speaks for itself.

"Watching owners watch their horses - there is nothing like it, the atmosphere is electric and it's an emotional experience for sure.

"The best part of this is, the interest of women from everywhere continues eleven years after we started - the registrations for example from 2023 were 50% first-time owners, so half the women involved entered into this exciting world of racehorse ownership for the very first time.

"That's what it's all about - accessibility and continuing to grow the opportunities for success."

Magic Millions is excited to officially launch the dedicated Magic Millions Racing Women social media channels. Aplatform to showcase the immense contribution, talent, and success of women at every level within the thoroughbred industry and equestrian disciplines. Zara's

ongoing achievements, on and off the horse, as Patron of Magic Millions Racing Women will be in the spotlight as she campaigns towards Paris 2024.

Champion filly and Magic Millions product Coolangatta, bred by Highclere Stud Australia (John and Jake Warren) and trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and competed in the King's Stand Stakes, at Ascot Racecourse.

Quality Lead Rein Pony “Rivington Lady Star”

Elsa is an 11.2hh 11 year old grey mare who is a registered Section Awith WPCS. Elsa is an excellent lead rein pony with impeccable bloodlines and the amazing Rivington temperament. She has a beautiful front and head, lovely ground manners and well established paces.

Elsa has attended Pony Club and small shows with us and was shown to Royal show level with her previous owner.

Elsa is a delight to have at home. She is not fazed by tractors, mowers, cars, kids, chickens, dogs, alpacas or kangaroos. She is quiet and calm to hack out around country roads and the forest. She is easy to catch, tie up, wash, clip around the ears and face, and is good for the farrier. She loads and floats well. Elsa loves children and being showered with love and attention.

Elsa is easy to take out to pony club and shows. She is happy standing all day with a haynet and doesn’t fuss when she unloads at an event. She is quiet forward moving off the lead and would ideally suit a family with a young rider at lead rein level or a confident child off the lead. She has clean legs and no scars. Need to be grass managed.

THE ULTIMATE MOTHERS DREAM!

Freddie is everyone’s favourite when you meet him, he is the ultimate kids pony, and he is always handled by my 2 and 4 year old.

Freddie is the one in the stable that is used for the kids pony rides, or road rides, for the kids to get out and brush and wash. He can be on his own or with others.

He is a top quality Shetland, qualified for grand nationals 2023 and Southern Cross 2023. He has so many winnings, from when first started out as a newcomer, and now this year competing at two Grand National qualification shows and qualifying at both shows.

Freddie is the ultimate Lead rein Shetland, he is also an amazing ridden Shetland. He sits in a frame and does his job for the kids. He goes from the float to the ring no work down. He is now ready to take a little kid to the top. Freddie is a Grand National winning Shetland. He has the best work ethic, but also so well educated. He has no vices, no health issues, good to tie, float and clip.

This is a very hard sale.

Please contact me for further info. Lots and lots of videos with the kids

Chewy has been shown successfully in-hand and under saddle including Currently in light work, ridden by 2 children aged 7 - 15 and going well under saddle. Chewy has a fantastic work ethic taking everything in his stride including new places, showing, jumping, trails, pony club, games. Lorry is now looking for his new home as his rider is no longer riding and he is missing out on the work and attention he craves. Lorry has a very loving personality, always first to the gate for cuddles, loves anyone he meets and can be paddocked happily with or without other horses.

Easy to catch, float, worm, clip and shoe. Lorry is best suited to a dressage or show horse home where he shows most potential to excel.

Lorry has previously competed in the show ring as a show hunter, where he managed to place in many competitions with his previous owners. He features in the 2015 Mitavite SAHorse of The Year gallery, after taking out the win in the Graduate Garland Show/Show Hunter Hack class.

Although Lorry is pretty easy going in most situations, he does need a knowledgeable home with either a competent teen or adult to get the best out of him as he can get anxious at times.

2 fitted saddles and a false tail as an option to buy along with the horse.

Kiki is truly something special. She is going to be a big girl. Only turning one in Nov and is already about 15.2hh. She has the prettiest face and so well put together for how big she will be. She is going through her gangly yearling stage so isn't probably the best time to advertise but even now she is exquisite.

Beautiful across the ground and has so much presence. I truly believe this mare will reach the top. Only selling as I have a colt born this year which is our 1st home bred so would really like to keep him. He is also going to be huge.

Barra is a stunning true black warmblood gelding with lots of bling. He is such a sweet soul, so very easy to handle and prep.

Started his showing career and already qualified for all royals this 23/24 season. He was amazing to take out with minimal work and then nailed his classes, working very calmly and accurately giving a smooth ride - always coming home with a broad sash.

Barra is also half brother to the highly decorated “Verdict by direction” He has had show jumping training with a professional stable competing to EA80cm. He loves the cross country course, jumping clean and thoroughly enjoying every moment.

He is such a gem but can be cold backed when not in full work, this is easily handled and managed. Don’t let this deter you as he has so many beautiful attributes to make a very competitive mount

Hard sale for owners but Barra deserves an amazing home and to be loved just as much as we did while campaigning him.

Best suited to a dressage/show home to reach his full potential

She is fine and athletic with good confirmation & great feet. She is very pretty and has a sort of WOWfactor about her. “BYE BYE FLY BYE FLY”
