The Horse Report

Feeding your mare while she is in foal By Dr NERIDA RICHARDS Pregnant mares carry your hopes and dreams, be it for the next champion or just a riding companion. Regardless of your intention, good care of the mare during pregnancy has long term impacts on both her and her foal’s long term health and athletic capacity. Here are some tips for feeding pregnant mares to keep them healthy and breeding sound, strong and athletic foals: 1. DON’T LET MARES GET FAT Mares in their early stages of pregnancy don’t need many, if any additional calories than they needed when they weren’t in foal. Pregnant mares should ideally be maintained at a condition score of six and should not be allowed to exceed a score of seven. Having mares too fat can: - Reduce their milk production - Put unnecessary strain on their hooves and joints, making them uncomfortable. - Lead to difficulty foaling (though this isn’t necessarily proven to occur). - Make it difficult to fall pregnant again, particularly if a mare is forced to lose weight just prior to or immediately after foaling. As mares progress through their pregnancy, their requirement for energy and protein does increase, so you may find you need to feed additional feed to maintain their body condition score. If you are feeding pregnant mares, get in the habit of running your hands over them every time you feed them. Doing this means you will quickly pick up if they are putting on more condition than they need and will allow you to adjust their feed intake. 2. DON’T LET MARES GET SKINNY A pregnant mare shouldn’t be allowed to drop below a condition score of five. Mares that are any lighter will fall away quickly after foaling, reducing the body energy and protein reserves for milk production and also switching off the reproductive cycles, making it difficult or impossible to get in foal again.

Keeping mares in the correct body condition is essential for both her and her future foal's long-term health. While pregnant mares can often be mainThin mares may also be more susceptible to tained on good quality pasture with little disease. additional feed, without supplementation of If you notice their ribs becoming easier to minerals, a pasture-only diet will almost cerfeel or their topline and rump starting to fall tainly have quite dramatic deficiencies of away, you will need to increase the amount copper and zinc and depending on the geoof feed they are getting. graphical location may also be very deficient Because so much room is taken up in the in calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, iodine mare’s abdomen late in the pregnancy you and selenium. will likely need to feed high energy grains If the mare doesn’t receive the additional or high energy fibre feeds that use ingrediminerals she needs to support herself and ents like sugarbeet pulp or soybean hulls to her growing foetus she will draw them from allow them to increase their energy intake her own body reserves. enough to hold their body condition. Understand your pregnant mare’s nutrition needs  From page 4 4. FEED HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN During pregnancy, a mare requires high quality protein to meet her own requirements and those of her growing foetus. If the pasture your mare is on is of low quality (for example sub-tropical C4 Type pastures, or pasture that has matured, gone to seed or browned off), add some high quality alfalfa/lucerne hay to raise the quality of protein in the forage component of her diet. If you are using supplementary feeds on low quality pasture, select feeds that use legumes and oilseeds with quality protein, including soybean, lupins, faba/field beans and canola meal. Low quality protein sources like cottonseed meal shouldn’t be used for pregnant mares. FeedXL will help you make sure you are feeding enough good quality protein to your mares to produce healthy foals and will also stop you from overfeeding protein which will make your mare’s diet very expensive. 5. MAKE THE MOST OF PASTURE IF YOU HAVE IT Pasture is an excellent source of energy and protein. Feeding a diet that relies largely on pasture has two main positive effects. The first is it will make for an economical diet, with pasture being one of your cheapest feeds available. Secondly, a high fibre diet will keep your mare’s gastrointestinal tract healthy, reducing the risk of problems like colic (something to be avoided in a pregnant mare). To really know what is in your pasture and what your mare needs in addition for her diet to be balanced, you should have your pasture tested for energy, protein and minerals levels. Once you have had your pasture tested, we can enter the results into your FeedXL account so you can see what is in and what is missing from your specific pasture. Then you only need to add what is missing from the mare’s diet.

Feeding good quality feeds to your mare helps to produce a strong healthy foal. SUMMARY Because it is so often said that a pregnant mare needs little more than a horse at maintenance, it is sometimes mistakenly thought that mares and particularly early pregnant mares can be fed diets of forage only with little or no supplementation. However while a pasture or good quality hay diet may be sufficient to maintain your mare’s bodyweight, it will almost certainly be lacking in critical nutrient including minerals that can determine if your foal is born structurally sound or not. Keeping mares in the correct body condition, making sure you meet mineral and vitamins requirements from day one of the pregnancy, feeding high quality protein and using pasture when you can will help you to breed sound foals that are healthy and full of life when born.

It will also mean your mares can remain healthy and able to produce strong foals with good structural soundness year in, year out. Being pregnant may not appear to be hard work but it will take a toll on your mare’s body if she is not properly cared for. Dr. Nerida Richards is FeedXL’s resident equine nutrition specialist. Breeding your broodmare is a big decision mare not coming into season such as an unexpected pregnancy. Furthermore, not all mares are obvious when displaying signs of being in season or “oestrous behaviour”. Your veterinarian should be able to determine the stage of her cycle by an ultrasound.

There are so many things to consider when thinking of sending your mare to stud… stallion choices, reproductive options, veterinary costs and so much more. The ultimate goal is to have a healthy foal, that suits your needs or meets the markets needs, so how do you achieve this? 1. Good health and nutrition is is vital. Before starting on any breeding journey, it is important to make sure your mare is in good health she is up to date with vaccinations, has had a dental check-up and has been wormed. Remember a healthy mare is your best bet for a healthy foal. 2. In the lead up to the breeding season, assess your mare’s body weight. It is important that your mare is in good body condition for breeding. Mares who carry excess weight may have trouble cycling and falling pregnant. 3. Breeding earlier in the breeding season usually gives the best results. Some mares will benefit from being rugged, put under

5. Whether your mare is having a Live Cover, or being bred by Artificial Insemination, make sure you have a solid plan in place and have discussed arrangements before sending her to stud. Good communication between mare owner and stallion farm will ensure that your mare is given the best opportunity to conceive. It always pays to have a good plan in place in order to have the most successful outcome with your mare. When it comes to breeding, careful planning with your vet along with taking precautions such as a breeding soundness exam and swabs prior to breeding, will always assist with the best possible opportunity to conceive and have a live, healthy foal.

Feeding due to wet paddocks & being stable confined By Dr NERIDA RICHARDS With all the rain and flooding and paddocks so sodden and wet, we find many of our horses are confined to a stable and not getting much exercise. So how do we feed them? It’s a balancing act…to give them enough feed to keep them occupied but not so much you have them climbing them walls. Here is a little help on how to do it. Horses are sometimes required to be confined due to flooding, illness or injury with no exercise allowed or possible due to the conditions. It’s certainly not ideal for a horse, but, with some conditions, diseases, injuries and surgeries it is critical that a horse does stay confined for long periods of time. As it does for so many things, nutrition what you feed and how much, makes a very real difference to how well a horse will cope during confinement. Horses will express the amount of calories they are being fed in their diet in their behaviour. So if you feed them a lot of energy (calories) they will give you a lot of energy. Which means feeding a confined horse needs to walk that fine line of enough calories to hold weight so that healing/recovery can occur but not so much that behavior becomes a problem. This can be either from your own safety perspective or for their own safety (the last thing you need an injured horse doing is

NATURE’S ELITE CANINE SUPPLEMENT

Page 12

A confined horse needs a calorie controlled diet. climbing the walls of a box). Where it gets really tricky is that mentally they need enough to eat to keep them occupied and of course we need to keep the stomach full to lower the ever present risk of ulcers. So it’s a classic Catch 22 - how do we feed lots to keep them munching all day without exceeding their calorie requirement?

The answer is in low quality, low calorie hay - if you can find it. Average quality grassy hay is perfect for these horses because it is low in calories, meaning they can eat a lot of it without blowing their calorie budget. Plus it’s often stemmy and requires a lot of chewing, so it keeps them busy for long periods and makes them salivate a lot which is great for maintaining the health of their stomach. And they don’t particularly like it, so they won’t eat it really quickly - a benefit in keeping them busy and preventing ulcers. Of course you can’t just feed average quality grass hay. There would be deficiencies in the diet everywhere that would hinder recovery and general health. My ‘go to’ with these horses is average quality grassy hay, a portion of alfalfa/lucerne hay and a high quality balancer pellet for vitamins and minerals which gives you the quantity/bulk you need to keep the horse sane and it’s gut healthy, the high quality protein needed for healing and it will cover all the vitamin and mineral needs. FeedXL is a really handy tool when feeding these horses, allowing you to keep a close eye on calories but also making sure you don’t leave deficiencies in the diet that will hinder the healing process which will help get your horse out of confinement as quickly as possible!! Mudfever - a condition or a symptom By HIFORM AUSTRALIA Mudfever is a common condition causing scabby inflamed areas on the skin that mainly affects the pasterns and lower leg region. It is often seen in muddy and wet conditions, however it is also seen with humidity and changing temperatures, from hot and cold and wet and dry. It is a fungal infection which breeds with moisture. However, the real question is this just a symptom to something further going on? When the horse’s immune system is functioning optimally, it can defend itself from viruses, bacteria and fungus. This is what the immune system is designed for. Only when it is not functioning optimally or if the pathogen is extremely robust do we see illness appear. This can be the case in some cases of mudfever, however it is more common that it is due to a combination of environmental factors and poor immune function. What does the immune system encompass? It provides a barrier and defence to the horse’s body from infection. The skin is the first barrier, followed by the digestive tract; especially the microbiome. This means if the bacteria in the digestive tract are imbalanced the immune system won’t function as well as it should.

Mudfever is a common condition causing scabby inflamed areas on the skin, mainly affecting the pasterns and lower leg region.

Conditions such as scours, ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, worm burden, etc. all will directly affect immune function. Thinking about this, have a look at the med-

ication your horse has been on, has it had high doses of antibiotics, without following up with probiotics?  Continued page 15

Environment can cause skin conditions  From page 14 If so, they may have reduced immune function as there was no reinoculation of bacteria after antibiotic treatment. If your horse suffers from other diseases or conditions, this may make them more susceptible to infections as their body is already dealing with a chronic issue. This is more so the case with horses who suffer from auto-immune disorders or are on immuno suppressants or steroid treatment. Environmental factors such as poor stable management can also lead to a variety of skin conditions such as mud fever. Certain beddings such as straw, breed more bacteria than the likes of wood shavings. Ensuring the bedding is regularly monitored and kept clean as well as ensuring that highly absorbable bedding is used, will reduce the chance of unwanted bacterial growth. There are dietary changes we can make to

Providing the horse with a good quality plantbased oil such as AlphaFlax, can also assist on a cellular level by keeping the skin and coat hydrated. Dry skin is more likely to crack or break, making it more likely to be exposed to pathogenic bacteria that can cause mud fever. Zinc plays a huge role in immune modulation as well as in skin health, maintaining the strength in cellular structure. It is also important to maintain the health of tight gap junctions in between cells which is what helps keep skin and tissue intact. As zinc can be lacking in some soils, it is important to ensure your feed and/or supplement regime includes enough for your horse’s individual needs. The best way to understand this is through a qualified nutritionist. The hoof abscess - types causes and treatments Sourced from THE HORSE FARRIER www.horsefarrier.com.au

Many horse owners and riders are unable to recognise the symptoms that indicate the beginnings of an abscess. If detected early, most abscesses can be treated in a simple fashion. There are four types of abscesses that can occur in the hoof and long before they become visible, you will have noticed a change in your horse's attitude or a slight change in the regular gait, or unevenness; often they will rest one leg and point the hoof. You must be aware enough to notice these changes - it is your duty of care. If you suspect an abscess, look for a digital pulse in the suspect leg (this is an early indication of trauma within the hoof). Note the pulse then compare it with the opposite leg. If the pulse appears to be accelerated or stronger you can be fairly sure there is an abscess forming somewhere in that hoof. At this point the decision needs to be made whether you are capable of carrying out further treatment or if you should call an experienced farrier or the vet. As with any treatment of hoof abscesses, prescribed antibiotics should be given. Hoof testers should be used to gently pressure test around the outer edge of the hoof wall beginning at one heel and moving at intervals to the other heel to see exactly where it is sensitive. The four types of hoof abscesses are Toe, Sole, Bar and Heel which each have a cause, an effect and a treatment. TOE ABSCESS - The cause

Sole abscess

Toe abscess

The toe abscess will be found at the junction of the sole and the hoof wall between the white line and the sensitive laminae. It usually starts from the hoof wall being too long, causing it to flare out and separate from the laminae. Often the hoof wall cracks vertically, allowing dirt and grit to build up inside against the sensitive tissue which when aggravated becomes inflamed then infected. The effects The horse will stand with the leg pointed forward to relieve the pressure at the toe and will show a head bobbing action at the trot. The treatment The separated or cracked area must be thoroughly cleaned out to remove all dirt and grit. The flares at the toe must also be reduced back to an even hoof wall thickness at this time to prevent stress. If the abscess is not yet visible, a poultice should be applied to the complete sole, to try drawing out the intrusion; this may need to be repeated until lameness is eased. Some toe abscesses will travel up through the hoof wall and

blow out at the coronary band these need to be poulticed in that area. The long term effects of these top releasing abscesses will be seen about two months later, when a small horizontal crack appear in the hoof wall directly above where the original abscess was, and just below the coronet. It will grow down as the hoof grows and will need to be opened up to prevent it from holding dirt and causing another abscess. There will be a capillary track from this horizontal crack down to the tip of the hoof which must be opened and cleaned. If necessary, it should be refilled with synthetic material (used as directed). SOLE ABSCESS - The cause The cause is either from bruising to the sole (which is common to wide flat footed horses) and usually results from the sole not being concave enough to allow free movement downwards when the hoof is under load), or from a stone bruise which may also puncture the sole; these usually occur in the front half of the sole. The effects Accelerated digital pulse, point-

Applying a poultice and bandaging the hoof Supplies: •Epson Salts, Poultice clay or Poultice pad (Animalintex®) •Small sized diaper or cotton wool •Self-adhesive elastic bandages (3-4 inch, Vetrap™) •Elastic adhesive tape , silver or black fibre tape the best to use •Bandage scissors Bandaging Steps: 1. Prepare a duct tape square. Make a square by overlapping the strips of tape about half way to give some strength to the square. Set the square aside in a safe Page 18

spot, sticky side up. 2. Prepare and clean the foot. 3. Apply poultice following the instructions on the packaging. 4. Use a small sized diaper or cotton wool pad to provide padding, and keep to hoof clean and protect the coronary band from pressure from the next layers of bandage material. 5. Using self-adhesive elastic bandages, like Vetrap™, bandage over the cotton wool pad, securing it in place. 7. Take the duct tape square and place the centre of it over the sole of the foot, Using the roll of duct tape, wrap the foot, paying extra attention to the toe (especially if the horse has shoes on) as this

ing the toe, hoof feels warm to touch, often swelling in the lower leg and obvious lameness. Treatment For a blind sole bruise/abscess there is sub-surface bleeding and this can be treated first with an ice boot or similar until any heat or swelling has subsided. Then protected with an underpad fitted between the shoe and hoof and left in place for a week or two as protection for the affected area. It is not advisable to try to drain this type of abscess by opening up the sole; it increases the risk of infection and delays the soundness. As soon as the bruise has subsided, any excess thick or crusty sole should be pared away to achieve a concave profile which will help in the rehabilitation of the hoof and the prevention of another bruise. In the event that the sole has been punctured by a stone, there will already be bleeding from that point so it needs to be cleaned and disinfected and a poultice applied to draw out any dirt etc. The punctured area needs to be protected with a pad or boot for a few weeks to allow the sole to heal over, and the horse must be given antibiotics. HEEL ABSCESS - The Cause These occur in the corn area at the junction where the bars meet the heel buttresses. The cause is from excess pressure from the bar under the heel of the shoe, or from high impact to the heels as a result of the heels of the hoof capsule being too high; this starts off as bruising and progresses to inflammation and finally becomes abscessed.  Continued page 19

Treatments for hoof abscesses can vary  From page 18 The effects Acute lameness, strong digital pulse, horse will rest the leg toe first with the heel off the ground. There will be visible swelling in the lower leg and hoof feels warmer to touch. The treatment Trim the bars down to sole level and lower the heels to expose the bruised area. Apply a poultice and repeat until soreness has eased, trim the hoof to achieve a straight line from the front of the pastern down to the tip of the hoof and remove all flares in the hoof from toe to heel. Sometimes a heart bar shoe is necessary for the hoof return to normal by easing pressure to heels during rehabilitation. BAR ABSCESS - The cause Occurs about half way back along the bar where a crack develops when the bars have not been maintained to a short strong profile. The effects When the bar cracks there is almost always an infection, extreme lameness, swelling, and pulse and then progresses to an under run sole abscess.

Ice/ice boots Ice Boots or standing your horse in a bucket of ice-water is a great way to reduce pain, heat, and inflammation and possibly even prevent an abscess forming or the onset of a bout of laminitis. Also great for cooling legs after exercise and sweating under leg

How to feed your horse well through winter By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic Most horse diets need tweaking through winter to compensate for seasonal reduction in pasture quantity and quality whilst horses burn extra calories to keep warm. Older horses in particular can have trouble maintaining weight through cold weather as their bodies become less efficient at producing, processing and absorbing nutrients. Minimise issues with winter weight loss by taking care of teeth, worming or other veterinary issues early and before the full stress of winter hits. KEEP THEM WARM The two most important things you can do for your horses through winter are also the two easiest - keep them warm and feed plenty of hay. The body uses energy (calories) to stay warm during cold weather and for horses with a lower body condition score it is energy they cannot afford to lose. Providing rugs, wind breaks or shelters will help older and underweight horses use more of their available energy for weight gain and maintenance.

Two things you should do to assist older horses through winter is to keep them warm and feed them plenty of hay.

meadow hay is necessary. Horses need to be able to eat approximately two per cent of their bodyweight in dry matter per day to keep their gut functioning optimally. That equates to at least 10 kg of hay or up to 18 kg of grass per day for a 500 kg horse. Scan the QR code to learn about how much to feed your horse. The horse gut evolved to con-

PROVIDE ADEQUATE ROUGHAGE Plant growth is naturally slower in winter due to longer nights and less sunlight hours for photosynthesis to occur. Plants also become stressed due to cold weather, frosts, drought and water-logged conditions which restricts their growth. As a result there is less pasture available for horses to graze and supplementation with grass or

stantly digest a steady stream of fairly low energy, high fibre forage. When pasture is in limited supply, it is essential to provide enough good quality grass or meadow hay to fill the gap in pasture availability. Hard-keepers and underweight horses will benefit from access to free choice hay whenever pasture is overgrazed or the average length of leaves in the pasture falls below ankle height. For overweight horses and those with metabolic conditions who are prone to laminitis, it is necessary to limit access to short, green or stressed grass as these are higher in the sugars and carbohydrates that can cause weight gain and laminitis. Although spring and autumn are the highest risk times for laminitis, it is important to monitor pasture and horses carefully through winter as well.

When weight loss is necessary, remove horses from pasture and supply low calorie (or soaked) hay at a rate of 1.5 per cent of their bodyweight per day. Slow feeder haynets can help make the daily ration last longer to avoid the stress and gastric ulcer risk associated with leaving horses for hours without roughage. A bonus for horses eating plenty of hay or grass during cold weather is that fibre digestion occurs through fermentation by hindgut microbes which produces heat and has a 'warming' effect. Adequate roughage usually provides enough protein to meet the daily needs of adult horses but some older horses are less efficient at digesting protein and may need extra protein in their diet. Higher protein feeds include lucerne, clover, soy or legume products. ADD CALORIES Some horses will get enough energy (calories) from hay and grass to maintain weight through the winter but many will need a hard feed to maintain weight. Be prepared to increase the size of hard feeds in response to weight loss but always ensure adequate roughage (as pasture or hay) is available before you introduce or increase hard feeds. If you're looking for something to top up a diet to put weight on you don't necessarily need a product that says 'weight gain' on the bag - you only need to add more calories. This is often easiest achieved by feeding more of what you already feed.  Continued page 21

Plenty to consider for older horse’s diets  From page 20 You can increase the level of energy (calories) in the diet with a cereal grain (such as oats or barley), a legume grain (like soy or lupins), a 'super fibre' (such as copra, beet pulp or soy hulls) or oil. You can use these ingredients alone or combination or as part of a premixed pellet or muesli blend. When choosing your grain or energy source, consider how much time and energy you are willing to put into preparation. Whole oats can be fed raw, but other cereal grains such as barley or corn should be fed in a cooked form. You can boil them or buy steamflaked, pelleted, extruded or micronized grains. Super fibres usually require a short period of soaking to absorb water while whole lupins are best soaked for hours to soften the seed coat. Scan the QR code below for more information on feeding for

weight gain. If you are feeding older horses, take into account the condition of your horse's teeth and digestive efficiency when choosing a

Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation can be necessary through winter when horses are reliant on hay for roughage and are fed more omega-6 rich grains, oils and hard feeds. Omega 3 rich supplements containing a combination of ALA, EPA and DHA are the best way to improve the omega 3 to 6 ratio across the whole diet. Omega-3 supplements can also assist horses with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, airway disease, allergies and itchy skin.

Consider an older horse’s teeth and digestive efficiency when choosing a hard feed. hard feed. The amount of hard food that is required depends on the horse's size, level of activity or breeding status, the amount of energy provided by the pasture or hay and the individual's metabolism (easy-keeper or hard keeper). Research shows that some older horses experience a decline in the function and efficiency of their digestive tract but others seem to process feed as robustly as ever. Horses produce less saliva as they age so dampening feeds assists the process of chewing and swallowing. BALANCE THE VITAMINS, MINERALS AND FATTY ACIDS Feeding a correctly formulated diet complete with all the vitamins, minerals and fatty acids in balance allows the horse's body to function optimally. This can result in improved 'fuel efficiency' and immune function to help horses through the stress of winter. Horses will always be deficient

in some minerals and vitamin E, regardless of pasture quality, unless supplemented. Even the best pasture in the world, able to provide more than enough calories and protein to keep horses fat and shiny, fails to provide enough of the microminerals copper or zinc and often selenium and iodine. The macrominerals calcium, phosphorous, salt and magnesium are also frequently needed to balance mineral ratios across the whole diet. Vitamins and minerals can be supplemented by providing the full recommended amount of a quality pre-mixed feed, or by adding a balancer powder or pellet. If feeding a reduced rate of premixed pellets or muesli, use a balancer powder to top up and balance your horse's vitamin and mineral requirements. Remember that it is possible for a horse to be deficient in one mineral even if the recommended daily intake is given unless all minerals are provided in correct mineral ratios.

TIPS FOR CHOOSING HAY FOR WINTER Grass or meadow hay is the best choice to substitute for pasture when grass growth is poor due to seasonality or over-grazing. Lucerne hay is a good way to boost protein intake but should be limited to no more than 30 per cent of the roughage intake. When buying, choose hay that smells sweet and fresh. Look for lots of leaf in the hay stalky hay, and significant amounts of seed heads are signs of poorer quality hay made from mature plants. AVOID HAY THAT IS: - too stalky - dark in colour - dusty - browning (especially on the bottom of bales) - hot to touch - smells of mould - displays visible fungus. When stacking hay in your shed, arrange it so that the oldest hay can be used first. Do you have questions? Contact the author: larissa@farmalogicglobal.com for assistance.

By Equestrian Australia Equestrian Australia (EA) is pleased to announce the selected combinations for the 2022 Oceania Championships, to be held in Victoria at the Melbourne International 3 Day Event from 9th – 13th June, 2022. Australia will field three teams: two Senior teams and one Young Rider team. The Oceania Championships are an important component of the EA High Performance Program, giving athletes the opportunity to gain Championship-level experience in the Southern Hemisphere as part of a representative team. This is consistent with the EA High Performance Program's strategy for developing emerging combinations, and for the majority of the Young Riders selected in 2022, this will be their first appearance on an Australian squad. Prior to the Championships, all team and reserve combinations will attend a staging camp in Victoria that will focus on team culture and competition preparation. The composition of the two Senior teams will also be finalised during this camp. EA High Performance Director, Chris Webb, congratulated the combinations selected for the biennial competition against New Zealand. “Congratulations to all of the selected combinations who have been named to the Australian squads,” Mr. Webb said. “The Oceania Championships are an integral part of the EA High Performance Program’s

Ability Horsemanship There is an indescribable joy in riding at a full gallop along a beautiful stretch of coastline, taking a jump on a cross country course, competing at an event, or trail riding with a group of friends on the horse of your dreams. Whatever your discipline, those moments of connection and trust are what we all work for, but what if the stars don't align that day, and we're injured? Lose our confidence? What if our health deteriorates through unrelated illness or age? What happens if our bodies simply can't manage climbing up onto a horse for a ride? How do we satisfy our need to breathe in that horsey smell, feel that soft muzzle, brush that fine coat, get on and ride? The mechanics of mounting can be extremely challenging if you have physical limitations, and yet riding a horse, having them move you is so therapeutic! Stretching stiff hips, extending constricted muscle groups, developing core and pelvic floor strength, it all happens uniquely on the back of a horse. Their walk emulates our own, the steady, rhythmic motion provides our bodies with the muscle memories of our childhood, when things weren't quite so twisted up. Yet, to ride safely when you've been injured, lack confidence, balance or can't stretch, presents an enormous challenge. You need access to a specially trained horse, a safe riding area, an easy way of getting on the horse, and (without wanting to admit it) some help. Using a specially designed, easy access ramp for mounting, trained horses, and safe riding arena, Anna and her experienced team at Ability Horsemanship provide private sessions for people of all ages and abilities. Ability Horsemanship supports you into better mobility, inspires you to develop skills and moves your body, mind and heart. Call now 0416 936 030

Guide your horses to the answers By TANJA KRAUS We had recently had a horse at a clinic who was fairly green in his education and also had a bit of 'spooking' happening. He had gotten away from the owner on the ground (spooked at something, and pulled away). Even though he has been being ridden, we noticed he was not comfortable with the saddle at all, and in fact was quite spooked when it made a sound (not great when you want to ride him). Phil Monaghan started working with him on the ground. One of the first things Phil had to establish was that the little guy couldn't get away (this can be a huge, and dangerous issue). Phil helped him by teaching him to look to him when he ran off, instead of running off. This began with Phil putting in a hindquarter disengagement to his focus (not needing to physically touch him). This starts on a smaller circle, and then you continue to make the circle bigger, until he is able to come in on the 22' distance -

Phil Monaghan working with horse which was easily spooked and helping to educate the horse in remaining calm.

note this comes from the hindquarters and not from pulling on his head.

!" #$%&! ' ( ) * ) ' ( +, ( -' . / # (( ( ) * ) ' (

Phil also worked on establishing a better feel in the halter. All of this was done with the saddle on - a great way to help him be confident simply moving around with a focus with the saddle on. Phil then asked him to circle at the walk, trot and canter - and at the start, the little horse would take off even at the walk. Phil held space and gently guided him to a stop, or a hindquarter yield when he got anxious, to help expand his 'thinking zone'. So instead of taking off, he began to think that stopping was

a better option, and the stopping allowed him to re-assess the saddle and realise it wasn't so bad. With Phil's kind guidance it didn't take long until he was confident at the walk and tolerating at the trot. He still took off at the canter - it is so important to realise that increasing the gait reduces the horse’s ability to remain calm about something he is worried about. So Phil did the same at the trot gently guided him and showed him it was much more comfortable to come back to a walk, rather than take off. By the close of the session, the little guy was confident at the walk, cautiously confident at the trot, and able to tolerate at the canter. In future sessions the owner will work on increasing this confidence in all gaits until it can be relied upon. The vital parts of this session were; - Phil remaining calm - Phil remaining connected to the horse - Phil keeping the conversation going - Phil showing the horse the comfortable spot - Phil giving the horse time to think, and also helping him I often hear the train of thought "just leave him, he will figure it out" - well, he might, but it's going to be a heck of a lot more stressful for him than if you just helped him along. After all, aren't we supposed to be the "superior" species.

EA Coach of the Month - Nina Fritzell By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Coach of the Month is a regular education series on the Equestrian Australia website. It is a way of highlighting the EA coaches and educators who work with dedication and passion all over Australia. Nina Fritzell is an EA level 1 Vaulting Coach and an FEI level 2 Vaulting Judge and is EA’s May Coach of the Month. Nina shares her story of how she became a Vaulting Coach, her coaching philosophy and why Vaulting should be part of all training. How my passion with horses started “I grew up in Stockholm, Sweden in a non horsey family. “My best friend at primary school was horse mad, so I used to go with her to the local riding school. “I convinced my mum to give me a weekly riding lesson and from there on, I was hooked. At the age of 10 we moved to a country town where of course I found the local riding school to continue my passion. “I pretty much spent all my time at the riding school helping out. “At the age of 15, I finally got my own 15-year-old Arab/New forest pony with no education and to

finance agistment, she had to be used for the riding school as well. “Keeping horses in Sweden is very expensive so that was my only option to keep her. “She ended up being a great little show jumper and we competed successfully until I turned 18.” My transition to coaching “I did my riding instructors course and worked as coach for 5 years at the riding school.

Nina Fritzell and some of her accomplished young Vaulters. Page 30

“In 1987 I went to Australia on holidays and have been here ever since. “Doing track work became my job for the next 25 years and I also competed dressage on some lovely pure bred Arabians. “I have a lot to thank Miguel Tavora for my interest in dressage, I took regular lessons from him while he was giving clinics in SA and also worked for him in Sydney for a year. “Learned some very valuable lessons in dressage fundamentals. “He had this great gift of knowing when to ask for the next step and I always refer back to him when training horses and Vaulters. “In the early 90s I was asked by the Strathalbyn Pony club to be a guest instructor and I suggested we do some Vaulting as I used to vault in Sweden at the riding school for fun. “The kids were hooked so Marion Meuring, who was the chief instructor, and I, started up Vaulting in SA. “We were soon approached by Bob Hennig and from there the first ESA discipline committee for Vaulting started. “Vaulting was very new to Australia so there was a lot of work to get the sport going.” Vaulting Judge and Coach “I became a FEI judge in 1994 and then got my coaching qualifications soon after. “I am now 57-years-old and live on 80 acres in Springton where I run a small agistment business. “I work part time for the University of Adelaide at Roseworthy Vet school where I teach horse and dog

handling/teaching support. “Acacia Gold Vaulting Club is based at my place and we train every Saturday morning. “We have currently vaulters from the age of 3 ½ to 25 yo. “The thing I love about this sport is the inclusiveness, everybody is helping each other and it is a team sport. “The horses we use for training is my 2 17.1hh thoroughbreds Charlie and Fred, aged 18 and 25. “They both raced in their early years and Reggie who is a 12 yo Warmblood owned by Skye Barrowcliffe. “Skye is our oldest Vaulter and is also coaching.” Greatest Achievements “All three horses have been awarded EA Best Vaulting horse of the year. “One of my greatest achievements has been to see some of my students compete internationally and my former student Jamie Hocking has been based in Denmark for over three years studying and competing at the highest level.” Why Vaulting? “I believe vaulting is a very good way to learn harmony with horse, improved balance and confidence so it would be great to see it more widely used in training riders. “Not the competition vaulting just incorporate part of the training.” Coaching Philosophy “My coaching philosophy is to encourage all my students to take advise from different coaches/ people not only from me and always show good sportsmanship win or lose.”

Madam Rouge stars on final day of sale By MAGIC MILLIONS Bidding online, Widden Stud was able to secure to star mare Madam Rogue for $2.4 million and was one of nine lots to sell for seven figures at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast. It will be welcome return to the famous Hunter Valley nursery for the daughter of Zoustar. The original breeder of Madam Rouge, Widden sold her for $310,000 at the 2017 Gold Coast Yearling Sale but astutely retained a 10 per cent share for her racing career. That career netted six wins and almost $1.5 million in prizemoney before she was mated with I Am Invincible in her first season at stud last spring. "We are thrilled," Widden's Antony Thompson said. "We obviously bred her and were involved in racing her we know her intimately. "It was a great ride with Chris Waller and the owners. “So now to be able to buy her and bring her back to Widden is wonderful.

Madam Rouge proved the star of a remarkable third and final day of the 2022 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale

"We bred and raced Sunlight and tried to buy her but we were unable to. “Last year we underbid Mizzy. “These Zoustar mares are the most gorgeous mares - they will be fantastic broodmares. "For mine she was the number one in-foal mare in the sale. “We were able to build an army to go to war and we were able to win that battle."

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com -

Earlier in the day, Victoria's Lucky Vega Syndicate went to $1.7 million to secure the impeccably bred Fantasy (Lot 1084) from the draft of Coolmore Stud. An imported daughter of Invincible Spirit, Fantasy was a winner and group placegetter at the Curragh and was presented in foal to Juddmonte's international champion sire

Frankel. The resultant foal will be a close relation to champions Magical and Rhododendron, who are from Fantasy's half sister Halfway to Heaven and by Frankel's sire Galileo. It was a big day for mares in foal to Frankel with Easton Angel (Lot 1066), Key (Lot 1145) and Excellent Sunset (Lot 1078) selling for $1.35 million, $1.1 million and $1.05 million respectively. The Written Tycoon Syndicate was leading buyer at the sale with six lots purchased at a gross of $11.81 millions. Their purchases included Away Game ($4 million) and Tofane ($3.2 million). The Newgate Consignment rounded out the sale as leading vendor by gross with over $24 million traded on their 50 lots sold. Arrowfield Stud (eight sold at $525,250 average) edged our Ciaron Maher Racing (four sold at $520,000 average) as leading vendor by average (three or more sold).  Continued page 32

Broodmare sale rated ‘greatest ever’  From page 31 Across three day's of selling the National Broodmare Sale grossed over $123 million on 542 lots sold at an average price of $228,311 and median of $140,000. The clearance rate currently sits at 84 per cent. "I am absolutely delighted," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. "I think it's been one of the great breeding stock sales we've ever held. "Last year was a huge benchmark to meet, it was an incredible sale which obviously included the Shadwell Australasia Dispersal, so to increase our gross, taking out Shadwell, to sell 18 million dollar horses in the past three days is an extraordinary effort. "We thank vendors for entrusting us with these mares and race fillies and the buyers for supporting the product that we have a lot of confidence in with great gusto. "The yearling sale market's been quite extraordinary, racing here in Australia is going from strength to strength and there's a huge amount of confidence in our game and internationals are paying attention, so it's the perfect recipe for a great sale. "I think we had an outstanding line-up of mares, especially young mares, it was a very, very young catalogue, and the market took to it in an emphatic way. "I must thank all of the vendors, their amazing teams and others connected with the logistics of the sale - the weather was very testing during inspections and early in the sale and everyone worked together to help make it an incredible sale." To view the results of the sale or to make an offer on a passed in lot, visit the Magic Millions website. The Gold Coast National Yearling Sale with a quality catalogue of youngsters was expected to draw continued buyer interest. "It's the last major opportunity for buyers to purchase a lot to be eligible for the $14 million plus Magic Millions Race Series and there's a great line up of stock catalogued," Bowditch said. What makes Rose-Hip Vital Equine stand out in a cluttered market? There are in fact many reasons. It all starts

with the humble Rosehip, the berry-like fruit of the wild rose bush species Rosa Canina. A wholefood known to be one of nature’s richest sources of natural vitamin C. “BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin. These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
