The Horse Report Feeding your mare while she is in foal
By Dr NERIDA RICHARDS
Pregnant mares carry your hopes and dreams, be it for the next champion or just a riding companion.
Regardless of your intention, good care of the mare during pregnancy has long term impacts on both her and her foal’s long term health and athletic capacity.
Here are some tips for feeding pregnant mares to keep them healthy and breeding sound, strong and athletic foals:
1. DON’T LET MARES GET FAT
Mares in their early stages of pregnancy don’t need many, if any additional calories than they needed when they weren’t in foal. Pregnant mares should ideally be maintained at a condition score of six and should not be allowed to exceed a score of seven. Having mares too fat can:
- Reduce their milk production
- Put unnecessary strain on their hooves and joints, making them uncomfortable.
- Lead to difficulty foaling (though this isn’t necessarily proven to occur).
- Make it difficult to fall pregnant again, particularly if a mare is forced to lose weight just prior to or immediately after foaling. As mares progress through their pregnancy, their requirement for energy and protein does increase, so you may find you need to feed additional feed to maintain their body condition score.
If you are feeding pregnant mares, get in the habit of running your hands over them every time you feed them. Doing this means you will quickly pick up if they are putting on more condition than they need and will allow you to adjust their feed intake.
2. DON’T LET MARES GET SKINNY
Apregnant mare shouldn’t be allowed to drop below a condition score of five. Mares that are any lighter will fall away quickly after foaling, reducing the body energy and protein reserves for milk production and also switching off the reproductive cycles, making it difficult or impossible to get in foal again.
Thin mares may also be more susceptible to disease.
If you notice their ribs becoming easier to feel or their topline and rump starting to fall away, you will need to increase the amount of feed they are getting.
Because so much room is taken up in the mare’s abdomen late in the pregnancy you will likely need to feed high energy grains or high energy fibre feeds that use ingredients like sugarbeet pulp or soybean hulls to allow them to increase their energy intake enough to hold their body condition. High fat feeds are useful for late pregnant mares.
3. MAKE SURE MINERAL AND VITAMIN REQUIREMENTS ARE MET
Meeting the mineral and vitamin requirements of pregnant mares during early and late pregnancy is crucial to:
- Promote sound development of their foals.
- Prevent deficiencies like iodine that can affect the thriftiness and survival of newborn foals.
- Prevent problems in the mares like retained placenta and the associated laminitis.
- Maintain a strong immune system in the mare and foal.
- Maintain the long-term health and soundness of the mare for future reproduction.
While pregnant mares can often be maintained on good quality pasture with little additional feed, without supplementation of minerals, a pasture-only diet will almost certainly have quite dramatic deficiencies of copper and zinc and depending on the geographical location may also be very deficient in calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, iodine and selenium.
If the mare doesn’t receive the additional minerals she needs to support herself and her growing foetus she will draw them from her own body reserves. However if she is required to do this for many consecutive breeding seasons, it will eventually have implications for both her and her future foal's’long-term health. One study has shown that foals born to mares early in her breeding career have less structural problems than foals born later in that mare’s life, which may indicate that over consecutive pregnancies, mares can run out of reserves of minerals that directly impact the sound development of her foals. FeedXLallows you to quickly and easily determine your mare’s requirements for these critical minerals as well as vitamins and helps you make sure the diet you are feeding is meeting her requirements.

The Horse Report Understand your pregnant mare’s nutrition needs
From page 4
4. FEED HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN
During pregnancy, a mare requires high quality protein to meet her own requirements and those of her growing foetus.
If the pasture your mare is on is of low quality (for example sub-tropical C4 Type pastures, or pasture that has matured, gone to seed or browned off), add some high quality alfalfa/lucerne hay to raise the quality of protein in the forage component of her diet. If you are using supplementary feeds on low quality pasture, select feeds that use legumes and oilseeds with quality protein, including soybean, lupins, faba/field beans and canola meal.
Low quality protein sources like cottonseed meal shouldn’t be used for pregnant mares. FeedXLwill help you make sure you are feeding enough good quality protein to your mares to produce healthy foals and will also stop you from overfeeding protein which will make your mare’s diet very expensive.
5. MAKE THE MOST OF PASTURE IF YOU HAVE IT
Pasture is an excellent source of energy and protein. Feeding a diet that relies largely on pasture has two main positive effects.
The first is it will make for an economical diet, with pasture being one of your cheapest feeds available.
Secondly, a high fibre diet will keep your mare’s gastrointestinal tract healthy, reducing the risk of problems like colic (something to be avoided in a pregnant mare).
To really know what is in your pasture and what your mare needs in addition for her diet to be balanced, you should have your pasture tested for energy, protein and minerals levels.
Once you have had your pasture tested, we can enter the results into your FeedXL account so you can see what is in and what is missing from your specific pasture. Then you only need to add what is missing from the mare’s diet.
SUMMARY
Because it is so often said that a pregnant mare needs little more than a horse at maintenance, it is sometimes mistakenly thought that mares and particularly early pregnant mares can be fed diets of forage only with little or no supplementation. However while a pasture or good quality hay diet may be sufficient to maintain your mare’s bodyweight, it will almost certainly be lacking in critical nutrient including minerals that can determine if your foal is born structurally sound or not. Keeping mares in the correct body condition, making sure you meet mineral and vitamins requirements from day one of the pregnancy, feeding high quality protein and using pasture when you can will help you to breed sound foals that are healthy and full of life when born.
It will also mean your mares can remain healthy and able to produce strong foals with good structural soundness year in, year out.
Being pregnant may not appear to be hard work but it will take a toll on your mare’s body if she is not properly cared for.

Mudfever is a common condition
By HIFORMAUSTRALIA
Mudfever is a common condition causing scabby inflamed areas on the skin, that mainly affects the pasterns and lower leg region.
It is often seen in muddy and wet conditions, however it is also seen with humidity and changing temperatures, from hot and cold and wet and dry.
It is a fungal infection which breeds with moisture.
However, the real question is this just a symptom to something further going on?
When the horse’s immune system is functioning optimally, it can defend itself from viruses, bacteria and fungus.
This is what the immune system is designed for.
Only when it is not functioning optimally or if the pathogen is extremely robust do we see illness appear.
This can be the case in some cases of mudfever, however it is more common that it is due to a combination of environmental factors and poor immune function.
What does the immune system encompass?
It provides a barrier and defence to the horse’s body from infection.
The skin is the first barrier, followed by the digestive tract; especially the microbiome. This means if the bacteria in the digestive tract are imbalanced the immune system won’t function as well as it should.
Conditions such as scours, ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, worm burden, etc. all will directly affect immune function.
Thinking about this, have a look at the medication your horse has been on, has it had high doses of antibiotics, without following up with probiotics?
If so, they may have reduced immune function as there was noreinoculation of bacteria after antibiotic treatment. If your horse suffers from other diseases
or conditions, this may make them more susceptible to infections as their body is already dealing with a chronic issue. This is more so the case with horses who suffer from autoimmune disorders or are on immuno suppressants or steroid treatment.
Environmental factors such as poor stable management can also lead to a variety of skin conditions such as mud fever. Certain beddings such as straw, breed more bacteria than the likes of wood shavings. Ensuring the bedding is regularly monitored and kept clean as well as ensuring that highly absorbable bedding is used, will reduce the chance of unwanted bacterial growth.
There are dietary changes we can make to ensure our horses’immune systems are functioning efficiently.
Providing the horse with a good quality plant-based oil such as AlphaFlax, can also assist on a cellular level by keeping the skin and coat hydrated.
Dry skin is more likely to crack or break, making it more likely tobe exposed to pathogenic bacteria that can cause mud fever.
Zinc plays a huge role in immune modulation as well as in skin health, maintaining the strength in cellular structure. It is also important to maintain the health of tight gap junctions in between cells which is what helps keep skin and tissue intact.
As zinc can be lacking in some soils it is important to ensure your feed and/or supplement regime includes enough for your horses’individual needs.
The best way to understand this is through a qualified Nutritionist. Feel free to contact us if you would like an individualised diet for your horse or to ensure your horse is meeting their nutritional requirements (03) 9775 6422.

Feeding a horse confined to a stable
By Dr NERIDAMcGilchrist
Feeding a horse confined to a stable… it’s a balancing act… give them plenty of feed to keep them occupied but not so much you have them climbing them walls. Here is a little help on how to do it!
Horses are sometimes required to be confined due to illness or injury with no exercise allowed. It’s certainly not ideal for a horse, but, with some diseases, injuries and surgeries it is critical that a horse does stay confined and calm for long periods of time. As it does for so many things, nutrition… what you feed and how much, makes a very real difference to how well a horse will cope during confinement.
Horses will express the amount of calories they are being fed in their diet in their behaviour.
So if you feed them a lot of energy (calories) they will give you a lot of energy.
Which means feeding a confined horse needs to walk that fine line of enough calories to hold weight so that healing/recovery can occur but not so much that behavior becomes a problem… either from your own safety perspective or for their own safety (the last thing you need an injured horse doing is climbing the walls of a box).
Where it gets really tricky is that mentally they need enough to eat to keep them occupied and of course we need to keep the stomach full to lower the ever present risk of ulcers.
So it’s a classic catch 22 - how do we feed
lots to keep them munching all day without exceeding their calorie requirement?
The answer is in low quality, low calorie hay, if you can find it.
Average quality grassy hay is perfect for these horses because it is low in calories, meaning they can eat a lot of it without blowing their calorie budget. Plus it’s often stemmy and requires a lot of chewing, so it keeps them busy for long periods and makes them salivate a lot which is great for maintaining the health of their stomach. And they don’t particularly like it, so they won’t eat it really quickly… a benefit in keeping them busy and preventing ulcers.
Of course you can’t just feed average quality grass hay, there would be deficiencies in the
diet everywhere that would hinder recovery and general health.
My ‘go to’with these horses is average quality grassy hay, a portion of alfalfa/lucerne hay and a high quality balancer pellet for vitamins and minerals which gives you the quantity/bulk you need to keep the horse sane and it’s gut healthy, the high quality protein needed for healing and it will cover all the vitamin and mineral needs.
FeedXLis a really handy tool when feeding these horses, allowing you to keep a close eye on calories but also making sure you don’t leave deficiencies in the diet that will hinder the healing process which will help get your horse out of confinement as quickly as possible!!

The Horse Report Helpful feeding tips for horses in winter
By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic
Should you make changes to your horse feeding program during cold months?
Sometimes it only takes a small feeding or horse husbandry change to provide significant health benefits to horses over winter. In this article, I investigate some common winter feeding practices and offer tips to boost your horse's winter health.
Avoid respiratory problems
* Avoid feeding dusty feeds and mouldy hay as these can exacerbate respiratory problems and cause digestive and toxicity issues.
* Wherever possible provide feed at ground level so that the horse can eat with a natural posture (they were designed to graze from the ground) which allows the respiratory tract to clear out.
* Steaming or soaking hay for a few minutes can be useful for minimising dust but only feed out as much as the horse will eat in a few hours to avoid mycotoxin contamination from mould growth.
* Horses diagnosed with respiratory diseases such as COPD or RAO will benefit from supplementation with antioxidants including selenium and vitamins C and E at levels higher than found in feeds and multivitamin supplements.
Horse feeding to prevent diarrhea
Accute (sudden, severe) diarrhea can be caused by feeding too much grain, sudden changes in diet, stress, use of painkillers and bacterial or fungal toxins in mouldy hay, lush pasture, old or poorly stored grain.
Chronic (ongoing) diarrhea can be caused by sand in the digestive tract, intestinal worms or starch overload.
If your vet is unable to diagnose the cause, try some or all of the following:
* feed on a mat to limit sand/dirt intake;
* feed plenty of long stem roughage (this is one of the best ways to assist with removal of sand build up in the gut);
* feed salt (10 grams per 100 kilograms horse bodyweight) to encourage drinking;
* give an electrolyte supplement to replace lost electrolytes;
* implement a deworming program as advised by your vet;
* reduce starch (e.g. by removing feeds containing cereal grains or by-products) and increase dietary fibre;
* use probiotics and prebiotics (look for live yeast as well as deactivated prebiotic ingredients);
* provide B group vitamins, including a high dose of B1 (thiamin);
* use a toxin binder containing multiple ingredients to trap, bind or deactivate the broadest possible range of mycotoxins.
* try a different batch of hay; and
* remember to make all feed changes gradually over a two to three week period.
Keep up the water intake
Some horses don't drink enough water during colder weather, which isn't good for their health. You can encourage drinking by:
* always providing fresh clean water that is not too hot or too cold.
* keeping water under cover can help keep it clean (especially if bat or bird droppings are likely to contaminate it) and manage temperature fluctuations.
* emptying and cleaning the water trough every few days to avoid algae, bird droppings, dead insects and the like building up in the water.
* sprinkling salt over free choice hay.
* feed approximately 10 grams of salt per 100 kilograms of horse bodyweight to encourage healthy levels of water intake. Remember to include the salt content of pre-mixed hard feeds
when calculating how much to add.
A nice warm bran mash?
As humans we love the smell of a nice warm bran mash on a cool night but we're not doing our horses any favours by suddenly introducing a new feed like bran occasionally because the hindgut microbes can't adapt for a once-aweek feed.
Make dietary changes very gradually and a few days to introduce a new supplement.
In addition, bran has an inverted calcium to phosphorous ratio so if you do choose to feed it, make it part of a daily ration with added calcium to balance the mineral ratios correctly (aiming for a total daily intake of calcium that is twice the level of phosphorous).
A nice warm stable?
Stabling and confinement can cause low level stress and increase the risk of ulcers, enteroliths and colic.
Horses need frequent movement to be relaxed and for their gut to function properly. If you need to stable, ensure your horse never has an empty haynet.
If you are stabling to keep a horse under lights for a show coat, consider an extra rug and letting him out of the stable when you turn the lights out. continued page 11

The Horse Report Horses may need extra calories in winter
From page 10
Feed horses roughage for mental and physical health
Many horses do not get enough roughage in their diets.
This is particularly true for horses kept in stables and small yards as well as during winter if your pasture growth becomes very slow. Horses need to have access to hay, chaff or grass approximately more than 20 hours every day (although they won't eat constantly 24/7). When they go without food for more than three or four hours, horses become very stressed and unsettled leading to behavioural problems, ulcers, colic and bolting feed which can cause choke.
Most horses need to eat a total of 2% of their bodyweight in dry matter.
Dry matter is the weight of a feed if you put it in the oven on low heat to dry out all the moisture it contains. Fresh grass is low in dry matter and high in water (15 - 30% dry matter; 7085% water) compared to hay (85% dry matter) and grain or pellets which are high in dry matter (90%) and low in water (10%).
A500 kg horse needs 10 kg of dry matter from food. This can mean as much as half to two thirds of a bale of grass or meadow hay every day day or free access to a large bale of hay when pasture is poor or not available.
Horse feeding: Concentrates to prevent weight loss
Although many mature easy-keeper horses and ponies at rest or in light work hold body condition easily from hay and grass alone, others need more calories over-winter to prevent
unwanted loss of weight. Ahard feed is often necessary for ageing horses, thoroughbred types and those in harder work. Keeping warm in cold weather burns body fat, so appropriate use of rugs, wind breaks, shelters and stables helps less thrifty breeds hold condition over winter.
Boosting immunity with omega-3 and antioxidants
Omega-3 oils help to prevent the formation of damaging free radicals in the body and stabilize the immune system. Including omega-3 supplements in the feed can improve general health as well as improving joint and skin health, hoof quality and coat shine.
Omega-3 rich sources suitable for horses include green grass, algal meal, linseeds, chia seeds and fish oils. The recommended feeding rate is 30gm of whole or freshly ground linseeds, 15ml of stabilized linseed oil or 2ml of fish oil per 100 kg of bodyweight.
Chia seeds are lower in omega-3 and need to be fed at about 30% higher than linseeds. Marine-derived omega-3 sources (algal and fish oils) can be more economical to feed because they have the advantage of providing the most active forms of omega-3: DHAand EPA. Omega-3 supplementation is particularly important when hay and grains form the majority of the diet and access to omega-3 rich fresh grass is limited.

Flax Seed Oil provides the richest (almost 60%) natural source ofOmega 3, an essential fatty acid (EFA) which is not generally present in equine foods. Like all animals, horses cannot manufacture this essential fatty acid which is so important for their overall health.

During cold weather, additional antioxidants can boost immune function.
* Even the freshest green grass leaves horses deficient in vitamin E and the levels in many feeds and multi-vitamin supplements are too low to top up the diet.
When choosing a vitamin supplement, look for one with high levels of vitamin E or use an antioxidant booster to top up vitamin E levels.
* Horses produce maintenance levels of vitamin C for much of their lives but sick or stressed horses and those over 16 years of age require more than the body can make. Introduce supplementary vitamin C gradually and wean the horse off it slowly when the extra dietary source is no longer required.
* Many Australian soils are selenium deficient, so this mineral is often added to horse feeds. Additional selenium can be added to boost antioxidant levels when required. Be careful not to double dose on selenium through different feed sources as this is one mineral where toxicity levels are relatively low. Look for organic sources such as selenium yeast in antioxidant supplements.
A note of caution regarding garlic
Although garlic is often promoted as being beneficial for horses, it contains allicin which is good for people but a known toxin to horses. Garlic's antimicrobial action may harm the beneficial microbes in the hindgut.
Feeding garlic long term can cause Heinz body
Ahard feed is often necessary for horses in the winter months to hold condition.
anaemia leading to lowered endurance, energy level and immune function in horses.
Nutraceuticals for joint care
Horses with osteoarthritis often 'feel their bones' and suffer more pain during the cold of winter.
Whilst feeding cannot cure degenerative joint problems, adequate vitamin and mineral supplementation also supports your horse's joint health.
Vitamins B6, C and E and the minerals manganese, copper and zinc are required to help the body build, maintain and repair joint fluids, connective tissues, muscles and bones. Orally ingested hyaluronic acid (HA), MSM, glucosamine and DHAomega-3s are recorded to have anti-inflammatory &/or analgesic (pain relieving) affects in humans, dogs and horses. Oral joint supplements may offer relief and most can be used on veterinary advice in addition to prescribed oral or injectable treatments.

The Horse Report
“BYE BYE FLY”
QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE
ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.
The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).
While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.
Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).
Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.
The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.
KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:
Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.
It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and Camphor oil” which naturally relieves itchy skin.
These significant benefits are also enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can also be applied to surface wounds, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help prevent irritation and possible infection by nuisance insects.
Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extensive field experience has proven KURITCH to be a most effective solution for both preventing and healing distressing skin conditions caused by biting insects.
As well as KURITCH as a repellent, environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.
Midges breed near stagnant water. As they don’t fly more than a few hundred metres from their breeding area, housing or paddocking your horses more than 500 metres from those areas will reduce their exposure to the flies.
Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies.
Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites.
Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.

Listening to your horse isn't pandering
By TANJA KRAUS
This is a really interesting topic and it's one that is quite complicated.
Alot of the ideas that come to mind when we start talking about listening to the horse or watching its body or following its cues seems to bring up in people the idea that we are pandering to the horse.
The Horse Report Trainers feature
Or, more often than not, that we are training the horse wherein he does something negative and we stop doing what we're doing, reinforcing the behavior. This is basically teaching the horse to continue doing the negative behavior because it will stop us from going forward with what we were going to do. Of course, this is absolutely something that can happen and I won't for a minute pretend that it can't.
With appropriate timing and the ability to read your horse’s body language intimately, you are able to use the information that you get, to show the horse that you're listening and that you will slow down and you will help him be more confident in what is happening.
Here is a little horse that I worked with that had suffered some trauma.
He was a fairly green horse and purchased only a few months ago. His new owner had ridden him at a clinic and out and about on her property with no issue, and on a particular day the moon and the stars aligned for a challenging situation in which the horse could not cope. Upon mounting, the horse had reached his tolerance level and bucked causing the owner to have a significant fall.
As a result of the incident, he hasn't been ridden in quite sometime and the last experience was the accident.
We are now ready to bring him back into work and wanted to make sure that it was done in a calm confident and supportive environment, for both him and the owner.
She had been doing some ground work with him and saddling at home and when I started working with him he was already saddled and we began there.
As I started to do ground work I noticed he was quite tense reactive and holding his breath, so my first priority was getting him comfortable moving around on the ground at all three gaits. This doesn't mean simply asking
him to walk, trot and canter both directions.
It's vital to read his body. The reason that it's so important to watch this horse’s body language is because he's very proficient on the ground in understanding what it is that you're asking of him.
So while normally with a green horse or a younger horse you may be able to use a simple walk trot and canter both directions to confirm whether they are okay or not this horse is able to hold himself together emotionally, even if he's not okay because he understands what it is that you're asking him.
So a simple walk, trot and canter in both directions is not enough to keep me or anyone else safe. What I need to do is ask for transitions; ask for turnarounds, changes of direction which change the eye that he's looking at me through and most importantly, observe his body language.
My approach included changing the pace within a gait, so having the requirement of him going faster or slower within walk trot and canter.
This helped to make sure that he was able to listen and execute cues even in movement.
It included me causing the saddle to move, and checking to make sure that he was able to follow energy cues even while he was moving - if he was able to come to a stop despite a rope swinging etc.
One of the most crucial factors of this exercise and this ground work is the multiple rest periods that I allowed the horse to experience. It's not just about going
out there and running him around and changing directions and getting him moving and turning and switching because again he's able to reactively do what I'm asking him to do. At the end of the day, I don't want to get on a reactive horse I want to get on a thinking horse. The thinking horse is created
when we increase pressure to a level that the horse can emotionally and mentally handle and decreasing the pressure to allow thought and processing of that experience.
I cannot stress how important it is to remain within the tolerance level of the horse.

Otherwise we are simply tormenting them and we may be lucky enough so to speak to get them tired enough or overwhelmed enough to ride that day but eventually that tired and overwhelm will wear out and we will find ourselves in a dangerous situation. In the photos, you can see that what I have done after I felt the horse was safe enough to mount or to at least to proceed to working with the idea of mounting, was to use a colt starting technique of bouncing in the stirrup and then stepping down to communicate to the horse that we were heading towards mounting and riding.
This allowed the horse to display his concern and worry, (he demonstrates through teeth grinding, worried eyes, pursed lips, tongue rolling) and then allowed me time to show him that "I see that you're worried, let me step down and give you some time".
Once I had done this a few times he became more relaxed with the process and I was able to proceed with putting weight in the stirrup.
I did this a couple of times, again showing him that I recognised his concern, allowing him time to relax. When I felt safe I stepped up into the saddle.
You can see in the photos that when I first mounted he was quite tense, but because I had spent time showing him that I was lis-
tening, he didn't feel it necessary to react. Instead he allowed me to bend him and talk to him and show him he was okay. We were able to step off in the walk without issue.
I stayed on him for a short session of walk and a little bit of trot to allow him to become confident in the ride and then I dismounted, took all the gear off and allowed him to roll in the sand.
It left him with a great experience for his most recent ride, hopefully replacing the idea that being ridden was scary. We essentially repeated this on day two and the process was a lot quicker.
The owner has gone home now to continue building his confidence in being ridden again.
Taking time doesn't mean that you aren't going do something and it doesn't mean that you're pandering, it means you're listening, you care and you are there to help your horse be more confident in what is happening.
Horses do not enjoy being reactive, it is a last resort or reaction when they are illequipped to manage their worry any longer. For us to take the time to help them through this process builds trust and demonstrates to the horse he can look to us for guidance.

The Horse Report What makes Rose-Hip Vital Equine stand out in a cluttered market?
There are in fact many reasons. It all starts with the humble Rosehip, the berry-like fruit of the wild rose bush species Rosa Canina. A wholefood known to be one of nature’s richest sources of natural vitamin C. A superfood containing 8 naturally occurring vitamins (including C, E, B1 and B6) and 23 minerals (including iron, copper, zinc and magnesium), essential fatty acids (omegas 3, 6 and 9),
You may already know rosehips are often fed to horses for immune system support and a improved circulation and improved digestive function. So you’re probably wondering what makes Rose-Hip Vital® so special?
Rose-Hip Vital® is made from Rosehips manufactured with patented extraction and drying processes which isolate and activate a galactolipid (fatty acid) called GOPO®. GOPO® has clinically proven anti-
The patented processes also concentrate and preserve the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, transforming Rose-Hip Vital® into a product that is both in a category all on its own, and across many; It’s a joint antioxidant and a nutritional supplement. It delivers noticeable improvements to mobility, mood, condition, willingness to move forward, performance and recovery while reducing improving general health and wellbeing, and boosting immunity.
Rose-Hip Vital® is a clinically proven plantand rich source of natural vitamin C. There is no product like it. Unlike other joint supplements, Rose-Hip Vital® is 100% plant-
Rose-Hip Vital® is safe for long term use and it does not swab. It can be used alongside conventional treatments and supplements as well as potentially replacing or reducing the medication.
Horses like it so much, even the fussiest of eaters become more enthusiastic about their feed once Rose-Hip Vital is added. So while Rose-Hip Vital Equine has become a highly use, it also has become highly recommended for improving general health and wellbeing, improving performance and maintaining healthy joints.
How does Rose-Hip Vital® Equine lengthen the lifetime of a working horse?
Vital is comprehensive. There are in excess of placebo controlled clinical trials on people, dogs and horses mainly focusing on antithe unique compound GOPO.
To many people, antioxidants and anti-aging go hand-in-hand. Antioxidants are talked about as the antidote to cell-damaging free radicals. Exercise and the associated stress and increase in oxygen consumption are linked to an increased production of free radicals. When the production of free radicals overwhelms the body’s antioxidant defences, oxidative stress can occur with subsequent research shows horses need natural vitamin C to help block toxic free radical activity, which causes damage throughout the body including joints and cartilage.
Some white blood cells in the body contain granulocytes which enable them to ‘clean’
bacteria in it. Too many of these white blood cells wear down tissue cartilage. In large numbers they can also produce chemical enzymes and toxic freeradicals which cause even more tissue damage. Excess accumulation of white blood cells combined with the release of chemical substances cause’s joint pain
The more becomes, the more the white blood cells are attracted to it –a painful cycle.
protects cartilage. This means it helps to delay the onset of arthritic changes or slow down further cartilage degeneration if it already exists.
In short, if you want to extend the lifetime of your working horse, feed it a natural antirich source of natural vitamin C. Rose-Hip Vital® Equine is your only option, and the results speak for themselves.

MALENY SHOW
Join with us to celebrate 100 years since the first Maleny Show. The Show Society have been working hard and are excited to announce that they have secured the beloved kids character, Bluey, along with younger sister, Bingo, to meet and greet their little (and big) fans as well as performing four exciting live shows. Bluey and Bingo will only be appearing live on Saturday, 3rd June. The Show Committee wanted to present a different feel to the show this year and concentrate more on family friendly, free entertainment throughout the day instead of the more traditional larger night program. Not to worry though, there are still some amazing things to see after dark at the show this year, with a human pyrotechnic show, bike stunts, live music and everyone's favourite fireworks on both nights to round off the event. Horse events run over both days of the show, and nominations are on the day, with full details on the website now. Head to malenyshowsociety.org.au to find out all the details.
Woodchop is back all day Saturday with increased prize money. Also another free attraction on both days is the Dinosaur Adventure Parka combination of lifelike animatronic dinosaur costumes, the robotic dinosaur enclosure and a free fossil dig zone. Handheld Pyrotechnics (human fireworks) show is on both nights. Kris from Flux Entertainment and his team are the only people in Australia that provide this type of show, as seen on Australia's got talent, and to be seen at the Ekka this year, but first they will be right here in Maleny at the show. Sire: Rivington Delta Blues

Quality Lead Rein Pony “Rivington Lady Star”
Elsa is an 11.2hh 11 year old grey mare who is a registered Section Awith WPCS. Elsa is an excellent lead rein pony with impeccable bloodlines and the amazing Rivington temperament. She has a beautiful front and head, lovely ground manners and well established paces.
Elsa has attended Pony Club and small shows with us and was shown to Royal show level with her previous owner.
Elsa is a delight to have at home. She is not fazed by tractors, mowers, cars, kids, chickens, dogs, alpacas or kangaroos. She is quiet and calm to hack out around country roads and the forest. She is easy to catch, tie up, wash, clip around the ears and face, and is good for the farrier. She loads and floats well. Elsa loves children and being showered with love and attention.
Elsa is easy to take out to pony club and shows. She is happy standing all day with a haynet and doesn’t fuss when she unloads at an event. She is quiet forward moving off the lead and would ideally suit a family with a young rider at lead rein level or a confident child off the lead. She has clean legs and no scars. Need to be grass managed.

THE ULTIMATE MOTHERS DREAM!
Freddie is everyone’s favourite when you meet him, he is the ultimate kids pony, and he is always handled by my 2 and 4 year old.
Freddie is the one in the stable that is used for the kids pony rides, or road rides, for the kids to get out and brush and wash. He can be on his own or with others.
He is a top quality Shetland, qualified for grand nationals 2023 and Southern Cross 2023. He has so many winnings, from when first started out as a newcomer, and now this year competing at two Grand National qualification shows and qualifying at both shows.
Freddie is the ultimate Lead rein Shetland, he is also an amazing ridden Shetland. He sits in a frame and does his job for the kids. He goes from the float to the ring no work down. He is now ready to take a little kid to the top. Freddie is a Grand National winning Shetland. He has the best work ethic, but also so well educated. He has no vices, no health issues, good to tie, float and clip.
This is a very hard sale.
Please contact me for further info. Lots and lots of videos with the kids

Petey is an eye catching hunter pony who oozes personality and spunk. He is easy to do anything with, clip, float, shoe, ties up all day, show by himself or with others. Petey requires minimal work during the week and at shows and is truly a pleasure to have around the stables. He has a soft snaffle mouth, a ground covering canter and the smoothest sit trot taking child riders to high level placings at SHC shows. He qualifies easily for royals and rarely comes home without a broad sash.
Petey has attended pony club and enjoys jumping small jumps, riding around the paddock, unphased by cattle, lawn mowers, motorbikes. He is well kid proofed around the stables and is unphased by my three children’s shenanigans and harassment while I attend to other stable duties.
Recently competed at Toowoomba Royal 2023 winning two tickets to Grand Nationals 2024. He has won and placed highly at Sydney Royal Easter Show in 2021 and 2022, won at Toowoomba Royal in his newcomer year and always placed in the top 5 or top 10 at SHC shows. He has been ridden by children as young as 9 and has had multiple riders take him to royal success.

Lorry is now looking for his new home as his rider is no longer riding and he is missing out on the work and attention he craves. Lorry has a very loving personality, always first to the gate for cuddles, loves anyone he meets and can be paddocked happily with or without other horses.
Easy to catch, float, worm, clip and shoe. Lorry is best suited to a dressage or show horse home where he shows most potential to excel.
Lorry has previously competed in the show ring as a show hunter, where he managed to place in many competitions with his previous owners. He features in the 2015 Mitavite SAHorse of The Year gallery, after taking out the win in the Graduate Garland Show/Show Hunter Hack class.
Although Lorry is pretty easy going in most situations, he does need a knowledgeable home with either a competent teen or adult to get the best out of him as he can get anxious at times.

Kiki is truly something special. She is going to be a big girl. Only turning one in Nov and is already about 15.2hh. She has the prettiest face and so well put together for how big she will be. She is going through her gangly yearling stage so isn't probably the best time to advertise but even now she is exquisite.
Beautiful across the ground and has so much presence. I truly believe this mare will reach the top. Only selling as I have a colt born this year which is our 1st home bred so would really like to keep him. He is also going to be huge.

Barra is a stunning true black warmblood gelding with lots of bling. He is such a sweet soul, so very easy to handle and prep.
Started his showing career and already qualified for all royals this 23/24 season. He was amazing to take out with minimal work and then nailed his classes, working very calmly and accurately giving a smooth ride - always coming home with a broad sash.
Barra is also half brother to the highly decorated “Verdict by direction” He has had show jumping training with a professional stable competing to EA80cm. He loves the cross country course, jumping clean and thoroughly enjoying every moment.
He is such a gem but can be cold backed when not in full work, this is easily handled and managed. Don’t let this deter you as he has so many beautiful attributes to make a very competitive mount
Hard sale for owners but Barra deserves an amazing home and to be loved just as much as we did while campaigning him.

Utopia is a 6yo 15.2 1/2hh Anglo mare by Coltura from a lovely TB daughter of Atlantis Prince (GB). Utopia is a lovely eye-catching type with striking good looks and a very elegant front. She is fine and athletic with good confirmation & great feet. She is very pretty and has a sort of WOWfactor about her. She is currently in full work and is coming along very nicely with 3 quality & elastic paces. She has had outings to riders club, trail rides and a local dressage competition. She has also spent time with professional trainers so has a very well-rounded foundation. Utopia has done some jumping and seems to enjoy the experience and shows great scope. She has good technique, and is brave and willing. She has jumped up to 80cm but shows talent far beyond this.
Successful shown in hand as a yearling she handled the travel, change of environment and show ring experience with ease. She has an excellent resting HE for endurance riders with her pedigree being used across Australia and internationally in the endurance field. Utopia is best suited to an experienced rider, or at least a confident intermediate rider that will work closely with a trainer to help her reach a potential.

“BYE BYE FLY BYE FLY”
