Maleah Lang-McMahon to represent Australia By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Four of Australia’s top young jumping riders, Charlie Richardson (NSW), Chloe Versteegen (WA), Hayden Parker (Vic) and Maleah LangMcMahon (Qld), came together recently for the final selection event to determine who would represent Australia at the FEI Youth Equestrian Games. The four shortlisted riders, from the seven Australian athletes that qualified, were invited to the final selection event on 19th and 20th April hosted by EA High Performance and held at 'Bimbadeen Park' in NSW, owned by Eventing Olympic medallist Shane Rose and wife Niki Rose. In front of the National Jumping Selectors, each athlete rode four borrowed horses, simulating the competitive conditions under which the FEI Youth Equestrian Games will take place later this year. Participants at the Games will ride unknown horses allocated by a random draw and supplied by the organising committee. Each competitor will get three training days and a welcome competition outside of the official schedule at the FEI Youth Equestrian Games to forge a solid bond with their allotted horse. Following an intensive two day program, it was 18-year-old

Maleah Lang-McMahon who was named as the Australian representative for the Games, which will take place in Aachen Germany from 28th June – 3rd July 2022 as part of the famed CHIO Aachen Equestrian Festival. “The selection event held at Shane Rose’s was an invaluable experience and I feel honoured to have been selected to represent my country in Aachen, it’s truly a dream come true,” Maleah said of her selection. Equestrian Australia High Performance Jumping Manager, Todd Hinde said it was great to see four top young Jumping riders present themselves to such a high standard in front of the National Jumping Selectors. “The professionalism in their attitude, training and riding was exceptional and well beyond their years,” he said.

This historic event for the youth equestrian community will showcase 30 athletes, aged between 15 and 18 years, who will compete in both Individual and Continental Team Jumping. Following the postponement of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Dakar (SEN), the FEI requested the IOC to organise an alternative event to be held in 2022. In agreement with the IOC, the FEI Youth Equestrian Games have been built around the same principles as YOG and will be organised to avoid young athletes being negatively impacted by the absence of the Youth Olympic Games. The event will also host a Culture and Education Program established in cooperation with the IOC. Participants will compete under the same format used in previous editions of the YOG.

“This event is not only important from a selection point of view, but it was also a great opportunity for young riders to be exposed to situations elite athletes face when vying to represent their country. “Congratulations to Maleah on her selection, we look forward to following her journey and wish her all the best in her preparation for the event.” EA would like to congratulate Maleah Lang-McMahon on her selection, as well as all athletes who attended the selection event and those that qualified for the FEI Youth Equestrian Games. EA would also like to extend a thank you to Shane and Niki Rose who generously provided the venue for the selection event as well as the borrowed horses ridden by the athletes. Reducing the stress of waiting for foaling Supplied by MAGIC BREED When it comes to foaling, on-time human intervention, if needed, is crucial to ensure a successful outcome. For more than 40 years, Magic Breed has earned the trust of breeders, stud farms and broodmare owners as a crucial frontline tool to accurately alert foal-watchers when a mare is readying to foal down. Already the benchmark foal-alert product in Australia and New Zealand, the original Magic Breed monitoring system has been dramatically upgraded to take advantage of modern technology. The new Magic Breed product builds on its worldwide reputation and brings the Magic Breed design into the 21st Century with improved range, battery life and many other new features. Called Magic Breed Plus (pictured below), it's not only much more affordable than the original, it also comes with a quantum leap in advanced features and benefits and offers the advantage of dealing directly with the manufacturer who has manufactured the product since day one for the past 40 years. "We know the product inside out, and provide efficient timely customer service!" Magic Breed Plus's operating system

Magic Breed Plus aims to minimise hours of supervision around foaling time.

works on a 917MHz frequency, providing it with greatly improved immunity to interference and superior range - 500m is no problem and in excess of 1km is possible. While this means that it won't work with any of the 27MHz accessories of the original Magic Breed system, Magic Breed guarantees that the performance is so good that an additional antenna won't be necessary. Designed from the ground up to minimise loss of sleep and long hours of supervision around foaling time, the non-invasive transmitter attaches to the halter and

detects when a mare lies down in a foaling position. The addition of an LCD display on the Magic Breed Plus receiver provides a wealth of operator feedback. This includes signal strength and battery level, along with individual identification for up to eight transmitters. Boasting dramatically improved battery life - a single pair of AAA batteries could last an entire breeding season - Magic Breed Plus's system is also useful for detecting Colic and for monitoring horses after major surgery.  continued page 5

Frequently asked questions about Magic Breed  From page 4 Does the Magic Breed Plus work with my old Magic Breed system? Unfortunately, due to the great leap in radio technology used, the Magic Breed Plus system is completely incompatible with the original Magic Breed components. Magic Breed realises this is inconvenient but it was a necessary step to ensure that the Magic Breed Plus could overcome all of the problems many people were having with the old design. Do you still service the original model? As the manufacturer of the original Magic Breed, the company is still providing service and repair to the original system, however this is becoming less feasible as the obsolescent parts are becoming difficult to source. I have a shed in the line of sight between the foaling yard and the receiver location. Is this a problem? Due to its improved radio technology the Magic Breed Plus signal is much better at working its way around obstacles. About the only thing that will have a significant impact on range is having a hill between the mare and the receiver. How long do the transmitter batteries last? I had to change them weekly in my last foaling alarm system. Testing has shown that one pair of AAA batteries in a transmitter can last up to an entire foaling season. Better still is the fact that the Magic Breed Plus will alert the user when the batteries need to be changed, preventing any guesswork or wasteful discarding of batteries that aren't flat. Do you ship to New Zealand?

The Magic Breed Plus foaling monitoring system offers improved range and length of operation as well as being cheaper than the original Magic Breed system.

Magic Breed does! Please get in touch with the manufacturer to arrange the purchase and Magic Breed can deduct the GST. Do you ship outside of Australia/New Zealand? Unfortunately at this stage Magic Breed doesn't. The frequency the Magic Breed Plus operates on is not a legal band in all other countries and furthermore Magic Breed has not attained CE approval for distribution in Europe. What is the price of Magic Breed Plus?

Pricing for the Magic Breed Plus new model has been reduced - the Original System was approximately $800 (has been for years). However for the new, improved system it is $595. In addition, the original warranty period of one year has now been extended to two years for the new model. Where can I get Magic Breed Plus? The Northern Rivers Riding For Disabled By Anna Rimac The Northern Rivers, Riding for the Disabled is located in the hinterland near Ballina Operating for 43 years, RDA Ballina continues to provide riding experiences for all ages and abilities in the Northern Rivers every week. After receiving a generous bequest from Brian McNamara of 'Glen Burnie' (115 acres in Teven), the volunteers, riders, families and friends have converted the cattle property into a fabulous home for their herd of special horses. Part of the development has been to build a 20m X 60m sand arena, with a roof over 20m x 30m and it's available for hire. Plans are also underway to roof the rest of the arena since there is such a huge demand for an indoor in this area. Look out for our crowdfunding campaign on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/RDABallinaDistrict Need a Dry Place to Ride? Remember the RDA has one of the few undercover arenas in the Northern Rivers, available to hire. If you're keen on booking an hour or a day, please email rdagrants@gmail.com for details. Your support in hiring is also a great way to help your community, since fundraising options have also been so limited in the last couple of years due to COVID and keeping the herd healthy carries a huge expense. Likewise, if you would like to get involved and you're able to help by volunteering,

The benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar Farmers and horse trainers have been using Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) to improve and then maintain their horses’ well-being for years. It has an alkalizing effect which puts the horse in a slightly alkalized state. The benefits of this are legendary and its use over hundreds of years have proven beneficial.. It is a valuable tonic if taken internally or applied externally. Top 10 uses for Apple Cider Vinegar 1. Natural insect control When horses are fed ACV daily in their feed, it causes higher levels of thiamine (vitamin B1) to be excreted through their skin, and thus the optimum levels of B vitamins in their system discourages insects including flies and mosquitoes 2. Improves digestion ACV works to acidify the stomach for better digestion and absorption of minerals and help protect your horse from bacteria, parasites and water-borne diseases, and ulcers. Research has also shown that it can slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, which is helpful for those founder-prone ponies/horses that are sensitive to sugar. 5. Helps prevent intestinal enteroliths An alkaline environment in the horse's digestive tract can cause intentional stones to grow to the point of causing dangerous obstructions. The acidifying effect of ACV helps dissolve and prevent enteroliths.

4. Mane and tail conditioner Adding one cup of ACV to a bucket of water for the final rinse of your horse's mane and tail will leave it feelingly incredibly smooth and removes any extra soap residue. 5. Disguise water while travelling If your horse is accustomed to the taste of ACV, bring some along on your next road trip and they'll happily drink unfamiliar water. 6. Wound treatment Spraying fungus, burns, skin infections and other wounds with diluted ACV is a great way to speed healing time by helping to help keep bacteria and insects away. 7. Ease arthritis symptoms Both horses and humans alike have benefited from ACV to help control arthritis joint pain and stiffness.

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com -

8. Treat hoof problems Use apple cider vinegar to treat thrush add 1/4 cup of ACV to a bucket of water to soak a hoof or use it undiluted in a spray bottle. 9. Weed killer If you don't like spraying harmful chemicals then ACV is a great spray alternative. 10. Clean blankets and pads Add some ACV to the rinse water for your saddle pads, blankets and polo wraps. It will help remove soap residue. A benefit for thinskinned horses that are prone to irritation. Recipe for homemade raw Apple Cider Vinegar fly spray. Mix 2 cups of raw apple cider vinegar with 2 cups of water and add 2-3 drops of either lavender or eucalyptus essential oils to make a natural insect repellent spray for horses.

A QUICK GUIDE TO FEEDING HORSES WELL Feeding horses well is not rocket science, but the results you'll see in horse performance and appearance can blow you out of this world!b

Now make sure the diet provides sufficient vitamins and minerals in correct ratios to balance the diet (see next page for details).

Horses fed all the roughage, energy and protein they need to grow, work and play can still lack vitamins and minerals. This will impact on their ability to repair and maintain their bodies.

With 7 scientifically balanced formulas, the Equine Vit&Min range provides a mineral balancing solution to suit horses of all types.

Vitamin shortages are most common when hay or grains form a large part of the diet because vitamins are most abundant in fresh plants. By the time hay has been stored 12 months, it will have lost virtually all of its vitamins.bb Mineral shortages will depend on the plants eaten and the nutrient status of the soil. Zinc, copper, iodine, selenium and vitamin E are almost always deficient in an unfortified diet, even when horses are grazing good quality pastures grown on good soils.b The steps to choose a healthy, balanced diet for your horse are based on a simple, logical process of meeting scientifically defined requirements for each nutrient:b First, make sure you feed enough roughage (grass, hay and chaff) – usually around 1.5 to 2% of the horse’s bodyweight in dry matter per day. If grass isn't at least ankle length in the manure free areas you'll need to feed some grass hay.

Finally ensure there are enough dietary omega-3 fatty acids to balance the omega-6 levels (aim for an omega- 3 to 6 ratio above 2:1). Farmalogic Omega Balancer provides essential omega-3 oils in the three important forms horses n need (DHA, EPA and ALA), making it a superior option to linseeds (flax) or linseed oil alone.

The amount of hard feed required depends on your horse's individual metabolism and stage of life. Therefore an equine food pyramid for a mature easy-keeper will be higher in roughage and lower in concentrate feeds than a balanced ration for a hard working horse or lactating mare.

Provide additional calories (as grains, beet pulp/soy hulls, pellets, mueslis or oils) to suit the work level or breeding status ONLY IF the horse loses weight on roughage alone. Check protein and lysine requirements are met. Mature horses usually get all the protein they need from their roughage. Breeding and growing horses may need a protein rich feed such as full fat soybean meal or lucerne.

Page 10

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com

Notice that the total intake (pie chart) for the easy keeper is mainly roughage with just a small amount of mineral balancer.

The Horse Report Feeding minerals to the recommended daily intake (RDI) isn't enough to ensure adequate nutrition. Some minerals interfere with the absorption of others, so that too much of one can cause a deficiency in another EVEN IF THE DIET SUPPLIES 100% of the horse's daily needs. It is critical that mineral ratios are balanced across the total intake including the grass and hay a horse eats. A hard-keeper or a horse in hard work may require a concentrate feed to maintain a healthy body condition. Some horses may never need a hard feed to hold weight and should just be fed a low calorie mineral balancer such as EVM Premium Balancer Pellets. Other horses will need the amount of hard feed adjusted in response to weight loss or weight gain which occur due to changes in work level or seasonal pasture quality. Not all horses need the calories that a hard feed provides but they all do need a mineral balancer to complement the forage they eat. Minerals can be added through fortified pre-mixed feeds (if fed at the recommended daily rate for your horse) or by powdered or concentrated balancer pellets.

Critical Mineral Ratios Ca:P 1.5-3:1 Ca:oxalates >0.5:1 Ca:Mg 1.2-2:1 Zn:Cu 2-3:1 Fe:Cu 5-10:1 Mn:Cu 3-5:1 Do not look for a mineral supplement with the critical ratios. The right mineral supplement for your horse will contain higher levels of the minerals needed to balance the natural levels in forage. Do choose a supplement or feed with good levels of vitamin E, copper and zinc but NO ADDED IRON because grass is high in iron. It is important not to feed too many minerals as some can cause toxicity. Selenium and iodine can reach toxic levels quite easily.

This makes a happy, healthy gut one of the most important assets we have. This applies not just to us but to our horses and dogs too. B-Complete, by Banana Feeds Australia, is made entirely from green bananas and is the first equine and canine performance supplement that is 100% natural. Bananas have long been known as one of the most important food crops on the planet and are a healthy source of fibre, potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and various antioxidants and phytonutrients. Because B-Complete uses green bananas, the sugar content is low. Full of fibre and antioxidants which are essential for maintaining good gut health for your equine and canine, B-Complete keeps them happy, healthy, incondition and performing at their very best. worth of experience in Australia's horticultural industry) and Robert Borsato (a thirdgeneration banana grower) are passionate about the health benefits and what the Banana Feeds Australia B-Complete can achieve in disease prevention, overall condition and well-being, and improved performance. In 2021 Banana Feeds Australia teamed up with Adelaide University to collaborate on a study on the benefits of a green

banana supplement. The study proved that Green Bananas are a rich source of antioxidants, polyphenols, flavonoids and showed an impact in improving overall gut health to help the prevention of ULCERS in horses. "The horse industry is screaming out for gut health solutions leading to better condition and performance,” Mr. McArthur said. “We have successfully developed a product that is 100% nat-

ural, safe and which can be sustainably used long-term to promote a healthy gut and unlock optimum performance." Tested at international laboratories to be non-swabbing, and perfect for all types of racing, and international competition. Many of Australia's and overseas trainers have been getting tremendous results using BComplete in their stables, with many acknowledging the significant financial gains from its inclusion in their animals' diets. "Win more races, earn more income" is now a popular phrase from their clients. Elite performance is critical in show, dressage, and thoroughbreds, so it's no surprise BComplete is used across Australia and internationally in all of these disciplines, including the preparation of yearlings at recent Magic Millions and Inglis Sales. However, its application is just as relevant to keeping your much-loved horse and dog healthy and happy. You can purchase B-Complete from the website at www.bananafeedsaustralia.com or at one of many stockists all over Australia.

Disease in horses due to insect borne viruses By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip Nut Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist ©2022 Hi Form Australia Pty Ltd

The wet summer especially in Queensland and Northern NSW, with serious flooding, have resulted in an increased risk of insect borne viral infections. Viruses that are transmitted by insect vectors are broadly called arboviruses. Since February 2011, there have been an increased number of reports of horses in Queensland, NSW, South Australia and Victoria displaying two distinct disease syndromes: • muscle and joint soreness • nervous signs. What to look for. The most common clinical signs in horses include, but are not limited to: • a reluctance to walk • a stiff gait • ataxia (uncoordinated) • depression • tremors. How Arboviruses are involved Laboratory testing of samples from horses showing muscle and joint soreness indicates that most infections are probably due to Ross River virus, an Alphavirus (arbovirus sub-group). Laboratory testing of samples from horses with unusual nervous signs suggests that a majority of cases are due to infection with one of several Australian strains of mosquito-borne Flaviviruses that include viruses such as Murray Valley encephalitis virus and Kunjin virus. All testing to date has ruled out Japanese

Recent rain and flooding have resulted in an increased risk of insect borne viral infections.

encephalitis and Hendra viruses, however now with some cases appearing in humans of Japanese encephalitis, we need to be more cautious especially due to the intense flooding seen recently. It is likely that many horses may be infected with arboviruses but only a small proportion of infected horses will become ill. This means that a positive blood test must be carefully interpreted. Repeat testing will be needed to show that antibody levels are rising. Soreness signs are associated with Alphavirus infections Reports of horses showing muscle and joint soreness have mainly originated from northern and central Victoria and South Australia. Signs are predominantly reluctance to

walk, stiff gait and ataxia (uncoordinated). Affected horses usually recover with good husbandry and veterinary care. Nervous signs are associated with Flavivirus infections Reports of horses with nervous signs have originated from: • along the Murray River in Victoria • locations across South Australia from the Riverland, down the length of the Murray and areas both north and south of Adelaide from Port Pirie to the South East • various locations in NSW, including west of the Great Divide, from Mungindi in the north to the Murray River and a significant cluster in the Hawkesbury Valley west of Sydney and also the Upper Hunter Valley.  continued page 15

These initial signs are followed by nervous signs including lack of coordination, high stepping in front limbs, weakness in the hind quarters, muscle twitching and increased responsiveness to touch and sound. In some cases there has been facial paralysis or twitching, especially of the lips. Severely affected horses may fall repeatedly and in rare cases develop convulsions. Most horses with clinical signs recover over several weeks with good husbandry and veterinary care but some have not survived. Protect your horse from annoying insects by rugging and using topical sprays.

Preventative measures for horse owners Building a strong immune system will minimise the risk of infection with arboviruses. Supporting the immune system by supplementation is the most important recommendation for horses that may be susceptible. We recommend using the Oxydane at and increased level of 25-30g per day, the Oxydane also contains powerful antioxidants, so will assist with Phase 1 and 2 detox. Most importantly the Oxydane contains supporting nutrients which will assist in

building and maintaining the immune system. We also recommend the DeTox formula which will also assist with immune function and has a gentle but powerful detoxifying effect. Finally supporting the Gut Micorbiome is essential for this reason we also recommend the use of the BioEquus. With horses that are displaying symptoms, we have a support program available so please contact our office on 1300HIFORM for further advice. Protecting your horse by rugging and using topical sprays such as Coffee's Choice FlyAway or other natural repel-

lents will also reduce the risk of insect bites. Stabling from the late afternoon is also another excellent preventative measure. It is also very important to ensure the correct feeding program to maintain good body weight, health and well-being. It is very likely that horses showing symptoms will be suffering from Oxidative stress, antioxidants will be of enormous benefit in these cases. What is Neem Oil and it what is it used for? Neem oil is an essential oil which some regard as a super oil because of its many benefits which is extracted from the seeds of the neem tree, which is native to India, where it has been used for centuries because of its healing properties. Neem trees grow in tropical regions and semi-tropical climates and it’s trees and leaves contain a special substance known as azadirachtin. Azadiractin contains amazing antiinflammatory and anti-bacterial effects, making it serve as a natural repellent against flying pests like mosquitoes and midges while being absolutely harmless to mammals. Neem oil is also an anti-fungal substance making it a highly sought after product especially to heal fungal infections on animals. Neem oil has proven to be really helpful for treating horses during the warm seasons by using it as a preventative measure against swarms of ticks, mites and mosquitoes which like to make life miserable for grazing horses. In addition, applications of neem oil work to soothe irritations or inflammations caused by insect bites and diseases and is also a moisturizer of dry skin. Recent clinical studies have even shown that neem oil delivers a bet-

ter curative effect on horses than using cortisone. Neem Oil protects horses against summer itch. In the summertime, and or after rain and floods horses dread the coming of midges and irritating insects because of an irritating condition known as summer seasonal recurrent dermatitis (SSRD), or what is more commonly known as sweet itch. This condition occurs as a result of a horse’s allergic reaction to the saliva of a biting insects like midges but can also be caused by black flies or mosquitoes. These pesky insects tear into the skin of a defenseless horse and inject their harmful saliva while feasting on blood. The horse’s skin develops a reac-

tion what causes inflammations and irritations round the tail, croup, ears, chin and mane which are the common areas flying pests bite into. This summer itch is extremely uncomfortable to horses and there is nothing really the horses can do about it so it is especially important that you as an owner intervene and put a stop to the harm. A neem oil-based substance can do a great job in helping to safeguard horses against the nasty bite marks and lesions midges and other flying pests inflict and on top of that, they can speed up the healing of any existing bites and irritations

that were already made on the horse’s coat and skin. A few drops applied onto the mane and tail delivers instant soothing relief for any horse suffering from summer itch. Neem Oil as an insect repellent Neem oil has repellent capabilities that can be used as a general prevention of insects and mosquitoes. Dilute pure neem oil with warm water in a spray bottle and then simply spray the product onto your horse’s coat. However, using neem oil as a repellent only works if you use the product daily.

The Horse Report

Growth rings can serve as indicators of health By DAVID LOVELL BVSC Lots of people like to keep a diary, a record of events that happen or they encounter. In earlier times, this was a meticulous endeavour whereby conscientious people diligently recorded things in a hand written tome. Well, surprise, surprise, the horse has been automatically keeping a very accurate diary of life events for hundreds of years, and what’s more, has been putting it on public display so that all can see what has been happening. Growth rings, (Fever rings or Founder rings), on the horse’s hoof capsule, are feared by many owners and many a horse has been discredited or downgraded because of the presence of visible rings on the hoof capsule. Yes, they can be indicators of a potentially serious underlying problem, however, in well over 90% of the time, they are merely harmless indicators of some event in the horse’s history. The hoof capsule is a very real, living tissue. Every minute of every day, new hoof wall, or horn, is being produced.

Growth rings, while at time, can be indicators of a potentially serious problem, can also be harmless indicators of some event in the horse’s life.

The new tissue pushes the previous growth down the wall towards the ground surface. Although the hoof capsule is relatively inert and has no blood supply of its’ own, the inner layer of the hoof capsule is firmly attached to the underlying sensitive laminae and receives nourishment from this highly vascular tissue. Once the wall reaches the ground surface, under natural conditions the old wall is worn off as the horse traversed the

countryside in daily search of food and water. Domestication has circumvented this natural exercise cycle, interrupted the normal wear and led to a plethora of abnormal disease conditions of the hoof but that is another story. The key event in today’s report relates to the growth and production of the hoof wall at the coronet and this in turn is directly related to the coronary blood supply. Changes or alterations in the

quality and volume of blood circulating through the coronary tissue, has a marked effect on the quality and appearance of the hoof wall. The foot of the horse is in reality quite small, particularly when related to the enormous body weight of the horse that the tiny foot has to support. There is a normal cycle of compression and expansion as the horse moves, relative to the load on the foot during stance.  continued page 19

The Horse Report

Horses need exercise for good circulation  From page 18 The outer hoof wall is relatively hard and strong and allows little expansion to allow blood to flow. Any imbalances or unevenness in the distribution of the load applied to the foot is going to have a marked effect on the quality of the flow. Any reduction in the volume or quality of the blood supply is going to have a very deleterious effect on any hoof wall produced. Most horses with dry shelly feet, cracks, thin soles, and poor feet in general, can relate directly to the quality of the blood supply. Most owners rush immediately to dietary supplements because they believe the horse is “lacking” something. Yes, they are correct but what they are lacking is circulation, not some vitamin or supplement. Domestication of the horse in many circumstances, means horses are restricted to relatively small yards, paddocks, or stalls and they spend a lot of time standing around, moving little. All the time they are not moving, the weight is on the hoof and circulation is impaired. Exercise can be the best supplement to help the horse’s feet, particularly if combined with proper examination, radiographs and shoeing. Such horses are going to have irregular and varying intermittent periods of exercise and consequently circulation and these horses are all going to have different qualities of new hoof wall production. This shows up on the outside of the hoof as a variation in the pattern of growth and is seen as rings on the hoof reflecting different stages in the production cycle of the horn. These irregular patterns of blood supply, and hence growth, are very common. Any single factor that causes some alteration in the horse’s life pattern can induce these growth rings and so in by far the majority of circumstances, all that they mean is that there has been some alteration in the horse’s circulation. Changes in weather, changes in management such as new owners, moving from one prop-

Exercise can be the best supplement to help the horse’s feet. erty to another, changes in diet or work pattern, all are capable of inducing changes in the blood supply to the horse’s foot. Very many people notice rings on the horse’s feet and immediately say that the horse is foundered. Yes, laminitis will cause growth rings, just the same as any other condition that causes inflammation. Laminitis is inflammation in the feet, but any other disease or body condition can also cause increased circulation. A bout of colic, digestive disturbance, respiratory virus, and the list is endless, are all just as likely to induce growth rings in the feet. These “one off” circumstances usually result in a single, very prominent ring in otherwise normal feet, usually occurring on all four feet at the same time. They certainly point to a reasonably dramatic change to the horse, as compared to the multiple rings seen on the “poorer” quality hooves. What is probably more important than the presence of rings, is the nature and character of the rings, In particular their evenness. Horses with chronic laminitis, and many horses with club feet, show diverging rings. Here the distance between the rings at the toe and the heels are very different.

The rings are very close together at the toe, and much wider apart at the heel. This indicates serious mechanical pressure from the “rotated” extensor process of the pedal bone pushing on the back of the coronet and restricting the blood supply. Growth at the heels is normal and unimpeded, so much so that the heels can sometimes grow so quickly that the horse ends up with the so called “Persian slipper” foot of chronic laminitis. Diverging growth rings are a very serious sign and indicate something wrong with the horse. Every bit as serious is the reverse situation where the horse has a negative palmer angle of the pedal bone. In this case, the heels are bearing extra weight, are being crushed, and have reduced blood supply. In this circumstance, the toe wall grows normally and the heel wall is stunted. So in summary, by far the majority of so called “fever” rings on the horse’s hoof are relatively innocuous and simply reflect some circumstance, singular stress, or change in the normal pattern of the horse. Some growth rings are in fact very serious but these can usually be detected by a lack of uniformity or some unusual characteristics.

Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale By MAGIC MILLIONS Outstanding race mare Lighthouse is the latest star confirmed for May's Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast. A recent Group One winner of the Coolmore Classic during the Sydney Autumn Carnival, the mare will be offered in the supplementary catalogue and will go under the hammer on May 24. A stakes winner in her native United States, the daughter of Mizzen Mast has been a revelation in Australia with five wins and three seconds from just 10 starts for trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace. Leading American-based bloodstock agent Jason Litt, of Solis/Litt Bloodstock, said Lighthouse had been a star right from her juvenile days. “We purchased Lighthouse at the breeze up sale for US$375,000 - she's a big, strong and attractive type,” he said. “She breezed her eighth of a mile in 10 seconds - showing

great speed. With this in mind she was very popular with buyers. “Right from the start she showed ability - breaking her maiden at her second start when leading throughout and being group placed before winning a stakes race over 1100 metres.” With connections struggling to find a suitable program of races in the United States, the decision was made by connec-

tions to ship her to Australia. “Alex (Solis II) and I had visited Australia on a number of occasions and were always looking for the right horse to bring and race,” Jason said. “She ended up going to Victoria because that was the same direction she had raced at home. “What she has achieved in a short time in Australia has been remarkable. “To win a Group One at her

eighth start here is amazing! “Lighthouse is by a top sire in the US and she is a great physical that's for sure. “She will present beautifully at the sale.” An eight time winner from just 19 runs, Lighthouse will be offered through the draft of Arrowfield Stud and will join what is shaping as a quality packed supplementary catalogue. “Lighthouse is a spectacular addition to the National Broodmare Sale,” Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. “She showed her class in the US and then went to a whole new level in Australia over the past few months. “She adds to what will be an outstanding line up of racefillies and mares to be offered at the Gold Coast. “It's a privilege to be given the opportunity to offer Lighthouse on behalf of the Roth family's LNJ Foxwood.” The Magic Millions Gold Coast National Sale will commence on May 19.

Trail riders association celebrates 50th Supplied by ATHRA The Australian Trail Horse Riders Association was founded at a meeting held in Gatton, 90km west of Brisbane, in January 1972. The meeting was organised by legendary R.M. Williams during an Australian All Breed Horseman's Congress at the then Gatton Agricultural College. Approximately 60 people attended including the pioneer trail explorer Danny Seymour whose intention was to map a national horse trail from Melbourne to Cooktown. The meeting unanimously agreed to form and association to promote trail horse riding in Australia, citing the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Trail in the USA as examples of what it hoped to achieve. The Australian Trail Riders Association was born, and with it, the National Trail. Shortly after, the name of the Association was changed to include 'Horse' and would now be recognised as the Australian Trail Horse Riders Association (ATHRA). The first ATHRA meetings during 1972 established a strategy which would support the exploration and mapping of the trail. By April 1974, approximately 26 miles of the National Trail had

The Australian Trail Horse Riders Association celebrates 50 years with a gala night of entertainment at Caboolture in May. been mapped starting from Healesville and included the route and sites marked for water, campsites and good grass. By September 1974 the mapped route had doubled to 50 miles. In 1985, it was decided a separate entity would be formed to concentrate on the trail and the Trail Committee proposed that the concept be made to a project to celebrate Australia's Bicentennial in 1988. The new committee obtained

funding of $300,000 to research, mark a route and print guidebooks. In November 1988, this had been accomplished and the Trail was opened. The National Trail was originally conceived as a route for the longdistance horse trekker but is now enjoyed by cyclists and walkers as well. To celebrate 50 years of Trail Riding in Australia, there are a number of Regional Events

planned though-out the country. Activities are being held in Far North Queensland near Cairns, Cardiff in WA, Forrest in Vic and Cobargo in NSW. Many clubs are also holding their own celebration weekends. Given the Association started in Queensland in 1972, the Association is celebrating with a family night of international equine entertainment with renowned Australian horseman Guy McLean who will be presenting an exciting showcase of his performance horses at the Queensland State Equestrian Centre on 28th May. This is then followed up by a week-long event commencing at the Woodford showgrounds, with a gala dinner, a trail challenge event and two days of trail riding, culminating in a three-day self-sufficient pack-ride. ATHRA is proud of the 88 strong clubs it represents though out Australia and last year reached a record numbers of members. As the association continues to grow, ATHRA still offers the best value support for recreational riders in Australia. Ability Horsemanship There is an indescribable joy in riding at a full gallop along a beautiful stretch of coastline, taking a jump on a cross country course, competing at an event, or trail riding with a group of friends on the horse of your dreams. Whatever your discipline, those moments of connection and trust are what we all work for, but what if the stars don't align that day, and we're injured? Lose our confidence? What if our health deteriorates through unrelated illness or age? What happens if our bodies simply can't manage climbing up onto a horse for a ride? How do we satisfy our need to breathe in that horsey smell, feel that soft muzzle, brush that fine coat, get on and ride? The mechanics of mounting can be extremely challenging if you have physical limitations, and yet riding a horse, having them move you is so therapeutic! Stretching stiff hips, extending constricted muscle groups, developing core and pelvic floor strength, it all happens uniquely on the back of a horse. Their walk emulates our own, the steady, rhythmic motion provides our bodies with the muscle memories of our childhood, when things weren't quite so twisted up. Yet, to ride safely when you've been injured, lack confidence, balance or can't stretch, presents an enormous challenge. You need access to a specially trained horse, a safe riding area, an easy way of getting on the horse, and (without wanting to admit it) some help. Using a specially designed, easy access ramp for mounting, trained horses, and safe riding arena, Anna and her experienced team at Ability Horsemanship provide private sessions for people of all ages and abilities. Ability Horsemanship supports you into better mobility, inspires you to develop skills and moves your body, mind and heart. Call now 0416 936 030

Desensitizing horses to scary objects By TANJA KRAUS “Desensitization, Sacking Out, Flagging, Bagging or Exposure training” - depending on who you talk to, any number of these descriptions could either mean the same thing to a trainer, or something completely different. Interpretation in the horse world is so subjective, and therefore many things are considered 'the same' when in actual fact the intention behind them can be very different. I think if you gave that list to any trainer, the same idea or images would come to mind basically taking a horse, taking something that might be frightening to that horse and trying to get the horse to be OK with it. The thing is when you are focused on the 'end result' - aka the horse being 'OK' with something scary, you might consider all of these to be 'the same' because at the end of the day the end result is 'the same'. The vital piece to this puzzle is not what we call the process, it isn't how long it takes to get there, it isn't the end result and

Introducing new things to build a horse’s confidence. it isn't what we use. The most vital part of 'sensitisa-

tion' is how we do it. How we approach the 'scary object' is going to define and shape my horse for his future both in being handled and being ridden. How I approach the 'scary thing' is going to result in preserving my horse’s curiosity and building his confidence. Or it is going to result in a shut down and an intolerant horse? It could result in learned helplessness, or it could result in a horse that is anxious and worried. My focus is on building confident and curious horses. Preserving the very attributes that make them the extraordi-

nary creatures that we want to spend time with. The defining characteristic we are looking for during the 'desensitsing' process - consent. When we conduct the process in a way that waits for the horse’s consent before increasing pressure (and we need to understand 'pressure' to the horse may simply be seeing the 'scary object' in the arena). We should allow the horse an amount of control in the training, which builds his confidence, and in turn holds space for his curiosity to be nurtured. When we tune into our horses’ body language signs, (and I'm talking about the subtle ones, not just the huge in your face, can't be ignored ones), and we allow that information to dictate the pace of the exposure, our horses can remain in a calm and curious state, or in a parasympathetic state, as opposed to a flight/fight/freeze - sympathetic state. When our horses are in a calm (parasympathetic) state, they are able to retain information and learn, as opposed to an anxious state (sympathetic) which results in a lack of retention (learning), and builds a level of distrust in the handler. Continued training in this state will eventually result in either a continually anxious horse or learned helplessness (bombproof). So call it what you want, but focus on the consent to have a fun and engaging training session with your horse. For more information visit the website www.horsemanshipforperformance.com

TECHNYFLEX riders out and about Supplied by TECHNYFLEX Stories from sponsored riders In March, eventing rider John Twomey married Joji Mercer in South Africa. The ceremony and reception took place in the Western Cape Province at Haute Cabriere, a family-owned winery founded in 1694 in Franschhoek, one of the oldest towns of the Republic of South Africa. After a brief honeymoon, John was back competing, teaching, judging and presenting on Horse Hub Pro. His latest topic featured tips on the elusive half halt. John explained "You need to develop your timing and your feel. “If I'm wanting to ride a half halt when I'm sitting in the saddle, I want to close my leg, and then I'm going to engage my seat into my hand so I create extra energy and then I'm going to catch it with the rein. “I want to ride the hindleg into my hand. So, usually, you won't even see my hand move. “But I just create energy using my lower leg and my seat into my hand."

RHYS AND JESS STONES (J and R Equestrian, The Oaks NSW) - There's no stopping these two great riders who have been bringing home a raft of trophies in recent months. Rhys reports: “We finally got to Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre for the Australian Show Horse and Rider Championships. “We were incredibly fortunate to have qualified some of Australia's best show horses to compete at this event and we were so proud of our entire team who all looked amazing and produced flawless workouts - a massive achievement. “It was an honour and an absolute bonus to come away with seven national titles! And we're exceptionally proud to have significantly contributed to Team NSW performances - securing us the win of most successful state.! “Congratulations and thanks to the committee, judges and volunteers who in such trying circumstances pushed forward to pull together yet another top shelf event.” At the recent Sydney Royal Show Rhys and his homebred mare 'Chatina' won a prestigious showjumping event from a field of 276 entries with a clear round of 61 seconds. And in the hack rings Jess Stones, who had been sidelined with an injury, took out 1st section 2, 2nd section 3, Champion Show Hunter, Champion Open Large Pony, Reserve Champion Galloway and a 1st in the Working Hunter Hack.

EA coach of the month - Lara Baker By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Lara Baker is an Introductory Coach based in Pipers River, Northern Tasmania and is in the spotlight as Equestrian Australia (EA) Coach of the Month. Lara shares her story from what started her life-long love of horses, her first competitions and her transition over to coaching. “Up until the age of 5, I was non-verbal due to major anxiety,” Lara said. “My speech therapist had recommended animal therapy as it had proven to be brilliant with helping children learn communication and social skills. “So, when I was six, 6 my mum bought Fern, a little miniature horse. “From then on, my non-horsey family (particularly my mum) transformed gardens into paddocks, machinery sheds into stables and more and more ponies were added to our family. “We were the typical, ‘all the gear and no idea’! “By the age of 9, I competed in my first EA dressage competition on a horse my coach at the time had lent me, Gerri, a gorgeous old Warmblood. “Just three years later when I was 12, I was on a Riding Pony x Thoroughbred, winning our first State Championship title and making the boat trip to the mainland for Interschool Nationals. “During my childhood I had ridden countless lease horses of all different breeds, shapes, and attitudes. “I really feel that being on so many different horses as a child made me the amicable, diverse rider that I am today that focused on training what I had, rather than riding the ‘readymade’ horse. “Horses were my outlet that helped me express myself and regulate emotions, and with the support of my coaches… I had a tiny bit of talent in the discipline of dressage as well. “It was a definite learning curve that my mum, stepdad, and sister were kind enough to experience, all in order to help me. “With the help of many coaches, professionals, sponsors, state teams, mentors and of course my family, my love and passion for dressage grew. “I have only recently turned 20 and am a full-time university student, studying Justice. “I am able to fit in my clients around tutorials, lectures, and assignments with adult riders Page 30

during school hours and children in the afternoons. “We currently have six school horses, Cleo, Nellie, Mr Brown, Emmy-Lou, Karot and Kanga, with our mascot Eccles the donkey. “After my trip to the mainland in 2014, I had outgrown my Riding Pony x Thoroughbred so the hunt began for a mount that I could progress and grow with. “Along came a Clydie x Thoroughbred, short legged, chunky mare called Cleo. “Before living with us, she was a keen showjumper… much braver than I. “So, at the age of 14, she began the shift into dressage. “She was full of the typical mare stubbornness and attitude but loved learning. “Due to her physique, she was quickly known as the bumblebee (aerodynamically impossible), she shouldn’t have been able to do to the things she was able to pull off in the dressage arena. “Because of this, one of our greatest achievements was the 2018 Interschool National Championship event held at Werribee. “We were able to show our peers that you didn’t need the expensive horse to succeed. “But you did need a love for the sport, dedication for improvement and an unbreakable bond with your horse. “Now, at the tender age of 21 she is a favourite among my young riders and is loving her new career teaching kids how to walk, halt, trot, and steer. “Unfortunately, I have had the past few seasons off competing due to health issues. “Over a series of emergency department trips, appointments with surgeons, doctors, and specialists as well as dozens of scans, I was diagnosed with May Thurner Syndrome and Primary Lymphedema.

“Although I am incredibly lucky to be mostly healthy, it has made it difficult to ride due to medications and loss of feeling in my left leg. “But I couldn’t imagine a life without horses and dressage, so with many thanks to my coach Judy Peel and my mum, I gained my EA Introductory Coaching qualifications. “Since becoming a coach, just less than a year ago, I have found a greater love for my sport and dedication for my equestrian community. “The best part of my job is being the type of coach to my kids, that I had when I was their age. “It is such a great feeling to see my clients flourish because of their connection with the horses and seeing them take those improvements into other aspects of their lives. “Alongside uni studies and coaching, I am also on the Tasmanian State Coaching Committee. “It is quite an honour to be working alongside seasoned

equestrians that I have always seen as mentors. “I am incredibly humbled to have been nominated by them for this achievement as well. “It was quite a shock considering I have only recently gained my qualifications and am relatively new to this other side of equestrian pursuits. “In the near future, I want to start my level 1 qualifications and am hoping to progress through the EA coaching scheme. “I want to continue to provide a safe place for riders to progress with their basics, confidence, and knowledge. “Outside of coaching, I am about to begin my journey into ParaEquestrian. “Because my medical issues will be life long and continue to worsen, I am very grateful that EA has Para as a pathway. “Long-term, my goal is to compete internationally one day. I have a long way to go but with the help of my support team I am sure we can achieve it.”

Lara Baker loves sharing her passion for horses with young riders.

What makes Rose-Hip Vital Equine stand out in a cluttered market? There are in fact many reasons. It all starts

with the humble Rosehip, the berry-like fruit of the wild rose bush species Rosa Canina. A wholefood known to be one of nature’s richest sources of natural vitamin C. “BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin. These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
