Equestrian Australia health and safety progress By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Equestrian Australia (Equestrian Australia) aims to provide a healthy and safe environment (competition and training) to protect riders, horses, coaches and officials. In 2019, a Coronial inquest following two rider fatalities resulted in 31 recommendations to be implemented to improve safety across the sport of Eventing. This opportunity for Equestrian Australia to raise the level of health and safety across the entire sport has been fully embraced. Since 2019, Equestrian Australia has done a lot of work in the health and safety space. It has developed, and continues to build on, a strategic health and safety plan that encompasses rider and athlete safety through providing an improved safety environment and comprehensive training and education; promotion of best-practice equine welfare; and strategically designed events that minimise risk. In April 2021, an audit was conducted to review where Equestrian Australia is at follow-

ing the inquest. The results were 18 recommendations had been completed, with an additional 11 recommendations in progress. Four months on, as of August 2021, seven more recommendations have been fully completed, bringing the total to 25, and Equestrian Australia is making strong headway in completing the remaining six. Equestrian Australia has
improved and will continue to improve, health and safety within equestrian fields using such measures as effective data reporting, concussion training, helmet tagging and medical service provider registration. Equestrian Australia has sought feedback from members, including athletes, coaches and officials, as the voice and opinion of all stakeholders is important. Health and safety for all is the
number one priority for Equestrian Australia and it will continue to further develop and improve upon the Health and Safety Strategic Plan. Wounds - to stitch or not to stitch Whatever the owner decides as the best way to deal with a wound, it is always going to be expensive. People rarely realise the ongoing costs of nursing a laceration and every bandage change and medication gradually accumulates into a sizeable figure. It makes sense to elect to obtain the best possible treatment and in the end, get the best value for money spent. At Redlands, we believe it is in everyone's best interest to hospitalise the horse and so we offer very reasonable inclusive packages for horses to agist in such circumstances. The reality is that once the wound is properly sutured and bandaged, there is usually not a lot that needs to be done each day other than maintaining strict confinement and monitoring the horse. Healing time is much quicker, and the end result far more optimum. The biggest "expense" of a horse sustaining an injury such as this is the "down time" waiting for healing during which the horse cannot be ridden or used. Continued page 7
By DAVID LOVELL BSVS To stitch or not to stitch - the answer to that question is so easy - yes. All wounds will do better and heal much more quickly if they are sutured. The reality is often different as there can be many reasons why a decision is made not to stitch a wound. By far the overwhelmingly majority of reasons for electing not to properly attend to a wound are cost. Be particularly aware that it is not the cost of the actual stitch up that is prohibitive, but the after care is where the real expense occurs. There is absolutely no point at all in going to the trouble of suturing a wound if the management is not prepared to do whatever is necessary to maximally enhance the healing capabilities of the wound. There are very few wounds that will not require strict stall confinement for usually three to six weeks before there is sufficient healing to allow any relaxation. Very few owners are prepared to do this, and yet, it is easily
Horse owners need to treat a wound properly, not only by suturing a wound but provide proper after care to ensure a successful
the most critical factor in a rapid resolution. There are many reasons, often not having a stall available being one, but more often it is a combination of not being prepared to put in the extra work in maintaining a horse in a stall 24 hours a day, and a perception that it is "cruel" to the horse to be locked up. This is certainly not true; however, many horses appear to be very upset when suddenly confined in their own environment, particularly if other horses are being let out. Horses are creatures of habit and "herd" animals and like to

be able to stick to their daily routine. In many circumstances, the sensible and most cost effective decision is to consider agisting the horse during the healing process. The horse is always much more relaxed and settles quickly into a routine at a new environment. Even more cost effective is to consider hospitalising the horse at a veterinary clinic. Now, professional supervision by people experienced with assessing progress and dealing with wounds is available and the end result is more likely to be advantageous.

Wound management B a l a n c e d P r o n g s From page 6 Most significant wounds will take six to 12 weeks to heal if properly sutured and managed. Those that are left to heal as open wounds, or sutured and not properly maintained so that they end up breaking down, can be expected to keep the horse out of action for six to 12 months so the primary benefit of quick and proper attention is a more rapid return to work Almost all wounds can be stitched, irrespective of how "bad" they may look. Some that are severely traumatised or with a lot of skin missing, may be difficult. Those on the front of joints where there is a lot of movements can be challenging but each must be assessed and decisions made. Certainly injuries that involve tendons or ligaments, where bone is exposed, or around the coronet or joints must be attended to if satisfactory outcomes are to be anticipated. The so called 'Golden Period" for suturing wounds is within the first six to 12 hours after occurrence. The tissues are fresh and contamination is usually at a minimum giving a much better chance of success, but even wounds that are a few days old can usually be attended to. Some wounds may even do better if left for a few days to allow the body to clean up some of the damaged tissue and to create healthier tissues for healing. The most critical factor in success at suturing is the technique and how the wound is stitched. Every student at veterinary school is given instruction in Halsted's very simple seven principles of surgery and adherence to these basic principles is the first step to success. In lacerations and wounds, the principles of "Preserving adequate blood supply", "Eliminating Dead Space", and "Minimising Tension", are most important. Experience is obviously a major benefit in getting the best result, however, once the wound is sutured, after care is almost always the most important factor in obtaining satisfactory healing. Here, the most essential element for success is eliminating movement of the sutured area. There is absolutely no way on earth that the most perfect stitch up is going to heal, if the opposing tissues are constantly moving and pulling the edges apart. This is the major reason for stall confinement, but many wounds require bandaging, splints, and
Performance Equine Dentistry
casts. Everyone always wants to blame "infection" for wounds breaking down. This is rarely the case. Proper debridement and flushing of the wound gets rid of the bacteria and dead tissue and if the wound is properly dealt with, movement is almost always the prime culprit causing failure. This is where most attention in aftercare should be directed. Be well assured that no amount of "penicillin", which everyone seems to demand, will compensate for any degree of movement of the sutured area. Almost always, the most serious wounds are those on the lower limbs. There is very little muscle and support tissue here, and consequently usually a poorer blood supply, and this is the area where most movement is going to occur. These wounds very often involve critical musculo-skeletal structures and damage can be devastating to the career of the horse. I believe proper attention to almost all of these structures can be successfully dealt with, but proper professional attention is essential. Many body area injuries can look quite spectacular, but they are often the least serious and most will heal, often with surprisingly little scarring. Wounds to the head are usually the easiest to deal with. I always say to my junior vets that they should try to be the one to get to a head wound first as they will always look good because of the usual outcome. There is minimal movement here, but more importantly, the blood supply is far superior to other body areas. Horses by nature are reactive animals and this explosive nature and flight as a primary means of defence, means that they will often sustain injuries. If your horse is unfortunate to develop a laceration, be sure to obtain proper veterinary attention and advice.

opposed to other animals that have much higher protein diets and this is the reason that true kidney disease is relatively rare in the horse as it is protein breakdown chemicals that damage the kidneys. The horse's diet, however, has very high quantities of minerals, salts, and ash materials and excess quantities of these agents are primarily excreted via the kidneys. For excretion to occur, the different chemicals have to be dissolved in solution for them to filter out of the body and it is

this requirement for solubility that is responsible for the vast majority of so called kidney disease we see in the horse. Two key factors are necessary for solution. One is sufficient volume of fluid and the other is the pH or acidity of the urine. Obviously if the horse is dehydrated or down in total body water, the quantity of fluid to dissolve the salts is deficient and they can accumulate in the kidney tubules and bladder. Also, the normal horse’s urine is quite alkaline (a function of the natural forage diet) and some of the salts require a more acid environment for solubility. Once again, excess mineral materials can build up in the kidneys and `clog’ the tubules. This situation occurs very commonly in horses, particularly those on high grain or pellet diets, and the outcome of this is what we see as perceived kidney disease. Such horses are seen to stretch out, strain, and pass small quantities of urine, often being very thickened and displaying varying discolorations. Horses exhibiting such symptoms should have their diet and work programs evaluated. Management attention to relative factors is important as well as providing proprietary kidney function mixtures and ensuring the horse is drinking. The problem is usually easily resolved. Myoglobinuria is also a not uncommon condition of the urinary tract. True myoglobinuria results from a horse `tying-up’ which is a severe muscle disease from exertion where there is a lot of muscle damage and breakdown releasing myoglobin which is a muscle protein. This substance is excreted via

Nothing fascinates horse owners more than the colour of their horse's wee and yes, the colour, quantity and character of the urine is very important. Understanding what you are seeing is not quite so simple. The true facts of the matter are that primary kidney and urinary tract disease in the horse fortunately is very rare. What we are seeing is almost always indicative of the function and normality of other body systems and an understanding of this is important to all horse owners. The kidney is an extremely important organ in all animals because it serves a critical function in the excretion of waste products from the body. If these toxic materials are not eliminated from the body, they build up and poison the system. Normal functioning kidneys are very important in the control and balance of the body electrolyte levels and nature has devised very intricate and complicated inbuilt control mechanisms to ensure these critical elements are kept within optimum levels. Horses primarily are grass, forage and grain eaters as
the kidneys and causes a red or port wine discolouration. Horses that have severe muscle exertion, but not necessarily tyingup can also have considerable muscle damage and these waste products can cause extra load on the kidneys. In these cases, urinary alkalising agents such as products containing sodium acid citrate are commonly given. There are some serious primary diseases. One the more common would be calculi or `stones'. These vary from very big single stones down to many smaller ones. Bigger ones are more common in females and the smaller ones seem more common in males. Signs include straining, small amounts often, blood, incontinence and staining the legs. Proper veterinary examination is required. Cystitis, or bladder inflammation occurs. This is rarely a primary bacterial problem, more often simply irritation of the bladder wall from high contents on insoluble crystals and mineral matter. Tumours are very rare. Actual kidney disease itself is quite rare and most commonly occurs as a complication of severe endo-toxaemia and dehydration. A number of chemicals and plant poisonings can severely affect the kidney but these are not common. There are some bacteria that can cause primary kidney disease, more often in younger animals and foals. Ruptured bladder in foals is relatively common due to trauma during the birthing process. `Urine pooling’ in mares is relatively common and can be a cause of infertility. It occurs, often after several foals or when the mare gets older and the floor of the vagina sinks due to stretching. Some of the urine when voiding actually runs forward and pools on the floor of the anterior vagina resulting in inflammation and irritation. `Stall Wetters’, or more correctly polyuria/polydyspia, can be very frustrating and difficult to treat. Once again, this is rarely a medical condition although there are a couple of diseases such as diabetes and Cushings disease that have to be considered. More often than not this is a behavioural problem and usually results from some form of stress to the horse. Each case has to be carefully evaluated and assessed.

Mycotoxins and using toxin binders By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic Mycotoxins are harmful substances produced by bacteria and fungi that grow on forage and grains. They can be present in pastures and grains pre and post-harvest or may build up if unprocessed grains or manufactured feeds are not well stored. They cannot be detected by smell, taste or the naked eye. Endophytes are fungi that live on pasture plants in a mutually beneficial (symbiotic) relationship. Endophytes produce harmful mycotoxins. Toxin levels tend to be higher during drought and in rapidly growing plants. What are the effects of mycotoxins? Mycotoxins can impact on gastrointestinal function, disrupting the intestinal mucosa and the gut microflora before being absorbed into the bloodstream where they can damage organs. The symptoms of mycotoxin load in horses can be very broad depending on the type and amount of toxin present. Some horses seem to be more susceptible than others. Symptoms may include: * Unpredictable, irritable or spooky behaviour, out of character for the horse's temperament * Lethargy and reduced appetite * Dull coat * Diarrhea * Photosensitivity ('sunburnt' pink skin) * Staggers * Facial muscle tremors or paralysis * Anaemia * Unusual sweat patches * Bloated belly on a thin horse * Abortion * Reduced milk production * Small foals * Infertility. How do toxin binders work? Mycotoxins have differing chemical and molecular properties which means that a sin-
Dispose of any mouldy hay to reduce the risk of toxin contamination.
gle binder is not effective against all mycotoxins. The most common toxin binders used in animal health are: Mineral clays which bind polar mycotoxins with electromagnetic charges and trap nonpolar toxins between layers. Aflatoxins have a flat structure so they can be trapped between the layers of mineral clay structures like meat in a sandwich. Mineral clays are not effective against DON and ZEN mycotoxins. Organic binders such as cellulose, chitosan, polysaccharides from yeast cell walls or glucomannans, MOS and peptidoglycans. Organic binders use polarity to attract the oppositely charged mycotoxins. They are effective at binding aflatoxins, T-2, DON and ochratoxin. Yeast-based toxin binders are not effective against most grass endophytes. Activated charcoals bind with their porous structure and are commonly used to treat drug overdose and poisoning in humans and animals. They are not recommended for daily use as they also adsorb nutrients such as minerals or drugs. Toxin deactivators use biotransformation with enzymes for targeted deactivation of specific mycotoxins. This approach is most effective for non-
polarised or non-adsorbable toxins. What makes a good toxin binder? The effectiveness of toxin binders can be improved by combining a number of active ingredients to broaden the range of toxins they can bind in the gut. They may also provide additional nutraceutical support through the addition of antioxidants, botanical extracts and probiotics. When selecting a toxin binder for your horse, ask for evidence that it doesn't tie up important nutrients including vitamins and minerals. Management of severely mycotoxin affected horses may be enhanced with the addition of antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase, Vitamin C and Vitamin E to reduce the negative impact of free radical tissue damage associated with the presence of toxins in the body. Reduce the risk of aflatoxin contamination by only feeding forages, grains and feeds that have been well-stored. Discard any damp, stained or smelly feed. If toxin binders do not rapidly assist your horse with mild symptoms, remove the horse from the pasture and seek veterinary advice.

What to expect when expecting (equine edition) By Dr MATTHEW MACKEE BVSc The Rivers Equine Vets
My mare is in her last trimester what do I need to do to get her ready for foaling down? Vaccinations - The mare should have tetanus prophylaxis six weeks prior to foaling down, maintain Hendra Virus prophylaxis (some studs require equine herpes virus vaccination . consult your veterinarian) Worming - regular worming protocol with last worming recommended four to six weeks prior to due date Housing - The mare should be placed in foaling environment two to three weeks prior to expecting foaling date z Clean adequate room, quiet and away from stressors (ideally 12ft x 12ft in size) z Straw preferable over shavings Nutrition - It is recommended that mares are fed a well-balanced ration diet and in the last trimester (last three - four months) of pregnancy it is recommended to feed one to five times maintenance. This will increase to two times maintenance once the foal is born in early lactation. It is recommended to provide good quality leafy hay ab-lib throughout the last trimester and early lactation Miscellaneous - Caslick removal two to four weeks prior to foaling down. What should I have on hand when my mare is close to foaling? It is always recommended to have a foaling kit on-hand (Foaling kits are available from The Rivers Equine Vets for information email: admin@theriversequinevets.com.au) z Head torch z Tail wraps z Disposable gloves z Clock/ stopwatch (keep a check of time since birth) z Chlorhexidine/ betadine z Cotton wool roll z Garbage bag z Foal enema z Stethoscope
It’s best not to disturb the mare during the early stages of foaling.
What are the signs that my mare is close to foaling? z
Mammary gland development - can begin as early as eight months gestation z There is NOTICEABLE enlargement two to six days prior (top right photo) z”Waxing-up” this is actually small droplets of colostrum and this occurs two to four days prior (bottom right photo) z Vulval conformation changes - swelling, relaxed “flabby”, elongation and increased space between the labia z NOTE: There should be no vaginal discharge present until imminent parturition z ”Dropping” relaxation of the abdominal and pelvic ligaments z Behavioural changes - pacing, flank watching, flehmen response, lying down, ”nesting”, pawing at ground and more Continued page 15

What To Expect When Expecting (Equine Edition) From page 14 My mare is showing signs of imminent parturition what do I need to look for? z The mare will undergo three stages of parturition: STAGE I - Coordinated Uterine Contractions z This is where the mare can be seen expressing different behaviours such as holding her tail out, getting up and down, looking at flank and many more behaviours that can easily be confused with colic z Do not disturb the mare during this stage z This stage normally takes up to one hour STAGE II - Foal Delivery This is initially seen as the amniotic sac (white bag) that will protrude from the vulva of the mare z This will then be followed by normally one or two front limbs and shortly after the nose of the foal (this is normal presentation of the foal) z The foal will then be delivered within a short period of time - normally in normal presentation assistance is not required, however, it is recommended to be present for this stage of the pregnancy in case of complications. z This stage normally takes no longer than 30 minutes z
STAGE III -Expulsion of Foetal Membranes (Placenta) z The placenta should be expelled within three hours in its entirety z Once expelled. Do not throw this away and save for examination The foal has been delivered, now what? Mare z Check the mare’s vulva for injuries z Monitor for placental expulsion (within three hours) . Keep and examine the placenta in entirety z Allow the mare to bond with the foal (particularly if maiden mare)
Foal ”1-2-3 Rule” STANDING - one hour - Greater than two hours - call your veterinarian z SUCKLING - two hours - Greater than three hours - call your veterinarian z DEFAECATION - three hours - Greater than three hours give enema - Given enema and still no defaecation within 15 minutes of treatment - call your veterinarian z URINATION – six to 10 hours z
Umbilicus - DO NOT CUT THE UMBILICUS - This will break naturally at birth - Apply 0.5% chlorhexidine solution or 1% iodine solution (Betadine) to the foals umbilicus to avoid infection two to three times daily for three to five days
I’m worried my foal hasn’t had enough colostrum what should I do? • Call your veterinarian to arrange a simple IgG test to assess adequate passive transfer of immunity from the mare • This test is performed between 12 – 24 hours after foaling My foal is up drinking, defaecating and appears normal, should I get a veterinarian to assess him/her? • This largely depends on your experience and competence • If you are inexperienced or unsure then call your veterinarian to check the foal over thoroughly when suitable within 24 hours. Useful herbs for horses and their humans By VICTORIA FERGUSON Famous for its unique ability to aid the body in the speedy and firm uniting of fractures, research confirms that Comfrey stimulates formation of bone cells, connective tissue matrix and collagen precursors and cartilage matrix cells. The wide ranging actions of Comfrey make it one of the most useful for horses and their humans, especially for its ability to accelerate healing of fractures as well as bone, tendon and ligament damage and to promote cartilage repair in early arthritis and rheumatoid diseases. Green poultice One of the best ways to use Comfrey is to select medium age/size leaves to make a green leaf poultice to bring down swellings in legs, as well as a valuable first aid/early treatment for all bone, joint, tendon and ligament injuries. It’s important to know that any trauma to a joint can be a site for osteo-arthritis later on, so prevention is the way to go. To make a green leaf poultice, crush the leaves in a blender or mash with a mortar and pestle, then spread on a nappy or some gauze roll and bandage on to the affected area. Take the poultice off after a few hours and apply a new one the following day. Comfrey is cultivated and grows wild in many countries. Symphytum aspericum (Prickly Comfrey) is a fodder plant in Europe and I recall the British team bringing Comfrey hay to the Olympic Games in Sydney. available, an infused oil is easily made from finely ground dried root and olive oil. Ideally use 15% Comfrey to 85% olive oil in an airtight glass jar, stirring it round occasionally, it will take about a month if kept out of the sunlight but will be ready in a couple of weeks if left in the sunlight. Strain well, into brown glass jars in a cool place out of sunlight and the oil will keep for a couple of years. My neighbour has a broken foot at present and was pleased to receive a bottle of Comfrey oil, as she has used it before when she had a badly damaged knee. Comfrey oil resolves bruising and takes the pain out of laminitic hooves, as well as damaged ligaments and tendons, capped hocks and big knees. Massage well into the coronet band regularly to stimulate healthy hoof growth. The actions of Comfrey are cell proliferating,

anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, anti-ulcer, demulcent and vulnerary. I have heard of horses eating Comfrey plants back to the ground with no ill effects. Animals know more about healing themselves than we ever will which is clear from these cases. However, pyrrolizidine alkaloids which can cause liver toxicity are present in Comfrey and this is the reason why this most useful of herbs remains controversial. Their toxicity is highly variable due to the changes in distribution between root and leaf, between and within species as well as individuals of those species. For example, the young shooting leaves are higher than mature leaves, which is why it is advised to use mature leaves. The really old leaves are often very dry so best to select the medium-sized mature leaves to make a poultice and you can also dry the leaves to reconstitute with water to use when fresh are not available. Comfrey should not be used for wound healing until the risk of infection is over, to prevent encapsulation of any infection, especially in a deep wound due to the accelerated healing effected. Comfrey is easily grown, shooting from the tiniest piece of the fresh root, but prefers a shady position, with plenty of moisture, dies back in winter and cannot tolerate frost. Equine health and improving digestion By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine Nutritional Therapist, Medical Herbalist and Product Formulator. ©2021 Hi Form Australia PL Increasing the health and well-being of your horse, improving digestion, improving skin and coat condition, boosting the immune system and slashing your feed bill is not difficult to achieve. In this article I show you how.
Small Intestine Major digestion and absorption of proteins, fats and carbohydrates to glucose. Absorption site for calcium, iron and other minerals, electrolytes and B complex vitamins. Large Intestine Bacterial fermentation of fibre, cellulose and carbohydrates. Bacterial synthesis of vitamins, protein and water absorption. What To Feed? Feeding a diet that is designed for the species is essential; this involves feeding a
natural diet. Horses have the most remarkable grinding process within the mouth able to pulverise a handful of whole oats in just seconds. They are the only species in the world that have this particular jaw action and remember that the anatomy and physiology of horses has not changed but the way we are feeding has. The onset of fast food for horses with its socalled time saving approach has only complicated the situation, not just for horses but for horse owners as well. Continued Page 21

The Horse’s Digestive System Horses grind their feed very thoroughly to a size less than 20mm so as to prepare it for digestion within the small intestine. Fermentation and the breakdown of fibre do not occur until the feed reaches the hindgut. Horses that tend to eat too quickly or ones with poor teeth will cut down the required process allowing the feed to reach the hindgut not fully digested. This can lead to digestive upsets. Horses take about 1000 jaw, mastication movements to chew 1kg of grain and about 3000 to chew hay, pretty amazing when you think about it, 1kg of grain is a reasonable amount of grain. Routine checks of your horse’s teeth is essential to maintain the condition particularly with horses that are feed hard feeds and are working reasonably hard. Sharp edges can develop on the cheek or large pre-molars and molar teeth. The horse has a bottom jaw that is not as wide as the top jaw, sharp points may develop due to the side-to-side action of the jaw, which is required to grind the feed well.

Just as fast food in the human world has created a number of health problems, the same has occurred in the horse world. Health concerns include obesity often leading to Laminitis, colic, digestive problems, ulcers, loss of weight temperament changes etc. It is essential for us to consume a healthy diet for our health and well being, it is no different for horses. Horses cannot make life choices where feeding is concerned as their lives are in our hands. Balancing a feed ration to suit the horse’s individual needs is not complicated but essential to achieve optimum health. This can be achieved by simple controllable feeding methods and supplements that deliver their promises. Generally speaking a natural diet including whole oats or barley, chaffs plenty of good quality hay and a supporting supplement is all that is required. EquiTrace wins Best Start-Up Award By LUCY SAUNDERS EquiTrace, a unique app that combines identity, GPS and medical records data using a scanner, a microchip and a mobile phone, has won Enterprise Ireland and the National Ploughing Assoc Best Start-Up Award and best Vet Tech company in the 11th Innovation Arena Awards. The awards, given out at the National Ploughing Championships in non-Covid years, recognise Irish innovations in agritech. “This award feels like a recognition of the hard work we've had to do to get here - a boost before the hard work of the next stage of growing a global business,” Jennifer Corley, CEO and cofounder said. “We've got at least a hundred things to spend the money on, not least of which is developing a new website.” Paula Fitzsimons, director of Going for Growth, said: "From the time I first met her, Jennifer Corley had a clear vision of the type of innovation that she and Kevin believed was necessary within the equine sector. “They have worked tirelessly to bring this idea to reality. “We have been delighted within Going for Growth, which is sponsored by Enterprise Ireland and KPMG, to support Jennifer during the early stages of her entrepreneurial journey. “Her Going for Growth voluntary Lead Entrepreneurs, Susan Spence, Fidelma McGuirk and Áine Denn, expect Jennifer's well-deserved accolades to inspire the next stage of growth for the company. “We look forward to continuing to support her, as Equitrace builds on world markets and fulfils its global potential.” James Maloney, Innovation Arena Awards Manager, Enterprise Ireland said, “The winner of our first ever Vet Technology Award as well as the overall Best Start-Up award at this year's Innovation Arena Awards is a simple to use and effective solution to the issue of traceability in the equine industry.” “There's huge potential for EquiTrace globally in the equine industry and Enterprise Ireland looks forward to supporting the company in finding new opportunities for their innovative product.” Technology challenges included creating a system that actually was useable in yard or field environments, could work in a low internet world and be able to recognise that there were three sex statuses for horses - mares, stallions and geldings. “Stables are often low or no inter-
Dr Kevin and Jennifer Corley co-founders of Equitrace. net environments, and we worked hard to make the App work seamlessly in such environments, syncing as soon as internet connectivity is restored,” CTO Dr Paul Hayton said. Following support during the beta testing stage, Merck Animal Health, known as MSD Animal Health outside the United Stated and Canada, a division of Merck & Co., Inc., Kenilworth in the USA , announced its strategic US partnership with EquiTrace on 8 September 2021. The app can work in conjunction with Merck Animal Health's BioThermo® microchips, allowing horse care professionals to instantly read, graph and monitor a horse's temperature easily. “This partnership is a natural extension of our commitment to delivering innovative infectious disease management solutions to support improved horse care,” Ron McDaniel, Director of U.S. Equine Sales, Merck Animal Health said. EquiTrace uses a scanner, an app on a mobile phone and a microchip in the horse itself. The co-founders of the company, Ms Corley, equine surgeon, and Dr Kevin Corley, specialist in equine medicine and critical care, have over 50 years experience working in the sector, so knew that it was important to make EquiTrace simple and straightforward to use. Horses and technology have been a difficult fit, which is the main reason that the industry has been very slow to digitise. There are good practical reasons for this - think about using a laptop on a stable yard or in a field with horses and it is obvious how vulnerable the hardware is and how few opportunities there are in such environments to sit down and type. EquiTrace completed research that confirmed that 75% of farms are still using pen and paper records, at a time when regulatory authorities like Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board (IHRB) are asking for more information, more often from trainers and owners. The mission of EquiTrace is to
make a real impact on horse health and welfare by bringing the industry into the digital age. It's important that it is done in a practical way that will appeal to everyone from the handlers to the trainers, vets and ultimately regulatory authorities. “Horse welfare is our priority,” Dr Kevin Corley, co-founder said. “Eliminating human error, saving time, capturing high quality data is ultimately in everyone's best interest. “EquiTrace helps the horse world ensure that the right horse runs in the right race, that infectious diseases like strangles or herpes can be tracked and managed more effectively, supports treatment management to help avoid positive drugs tests and makes it much
easier to track a horse through its whole life, supporting welfare initiatives for horses after their initial competitive career is over, something that we all want to happen, especially if we watched the recent Panorama program.” Enterprise Ireland (EI) has been a part of the EquiTrace story from the start, as mentors from EI and EI-supported initiatives Mairead English-Maher, Paula Fitzsimons, Aine Denn and Fidelma McGuirk have helped Jennifer Corley, an equine surgeon and founder of a previous veterinary app company, develop a truly global vision for EquiTrace. EquiTrace is already in use in USA, New Zealand, England, Sweden and Italy as well as Ireland. EquiTrace is a subscription service, with a basic service for $1.60 Aus per month per horse and a premium subscription at $3.20 per month per horse. A scanner available from EquiTrace as a one-time cost is required to operate the system, ranging in price from $400 Aus to $645. EquiTrace works with all ISO-compliant microchips and some of the service offerings will be dependent on the type of chip in the horse. EquiTrace is available on Apple and Google appstores orcontact EquiTrace directly.

Transporting horses in NSW Frequently asked questions Do I need a TSS ? A Transported Stock Statement (TSS) is a form which records the movement of a horse/s from one property to another. A TSS is a requirement of the Local Land Services Act 2013 and Local Land Services Regulation 2014 for the purposes of tracing horse movements for biosecurity purposes. A TSS is also useful in helping the NSW Police identify stock theft. A dedicated TSS for Horse Movement is now available online from the Local Land Services website and used repeatedly. It needs to be printed and completed with the details of the individual journey, including date and signature. You can download the TSS for Horse Movement at w.lls.nsw.gov.au/horseTSS When horses are transported into and around NSW it is a legal requirement for the person moving horses to carry a TSS unless the horses fall under one of these exemptions: • horses transported to or from an agricultural show, gymkhana, exhibition, pony club meeting, or similar function conducted by an incorporated club, entity orassociation. • racehorses or harness racing horses, or • working horses being moved to or from any place for work, or • horses being moved under a stock permit issued under the Local Land Services Act 2013, or • horses being moved under a control order, emergency order, biosecurity direction, permit issued, or a biosecurity zone established under the Biosecurity Act 2015, or • horses being transported from interstate and travel within NSW up to 30 km before proceeding back into the other state or territory as part of an unbroken journey,or • horses being transported across or along a road from one part of a property to another which would be adjoining except for being separated by the road, or • horses being transported to a place for treatment by a veterinary practitioner. If you are attending an event such as an agricultural show, gymkhana or similar function, as described above, it is advisable to have proof of the event with you to claim the TSS exemption. If you do not meet the above criteria, you need to have a completed TSS with you. If you are transporting a horse to a single destination and returning to the property of origin on the same date, then one TSS is required. If the trip involves an overnight Page 28
stay, then another TSS is required. The TSS must be kept for at least two years following the horse/s movement and applies to: • an owner of stock who is transporting their own stock by vehicle • an owner of stock who provides another person who is transporting the stock with a TSS • a person in charge of a vehicle transporting stock who is provided with a TSS • a consignee who is provided with a TSS Common horse movements which require a TSS include (but are not limited to) when a horse is moved: • to a farrier to be shod • to a new grazing block • for recreational rides outside of an organised event or exempt activity listed above • for breeding purposes for non-thoroughbreds or non-Standardbreds • to a riding school for a riding lesson, or • to a trail ride NSW Police launched Operation Stock Check on 4 August 2020 resulting in more monitoring of people trucking horses and other livestock around NSW. Be prepared, you are likely to be pulled over and asked by the NSW Police for a TSS for the horse you may be moving. If you do not have a TSS with you or your horse does not meet any of the above exemptions, you may be fined.
What is a Property Identification Code (PIC)? A PIC identifies land where livestock are kept and is required for the property you keep your horse or horses on, even if this is on a temporary basis such as an agistment property. You need to know the PIC of the land on which your horse is kept so you can record this on the TSS next to where it asks for the address of where the horse is loaded. A PIC is a unique eight-character code assigned by Local Land Services to properties with livestock and recorded in the District Register for each Local Land Services region. This Register holds information identifying land including property names, locations and contact details of the trading entity and PIC manager. You should include a destination PIC in the TSS however sometimes this is not possible How do I obtain a Property Identification Code (PIC)? PIC applications are made to Local Land Services and a fee applies. Please lodge an enquiry through the online form www.lls.nsw.gov.au/contactus or call 1300 795 299

NEW REARING BIT WITH BRAKES Introducing the 5 star-rated patented design Rearing Bit with Brakes for complete control.
Rearing bits have not changed since their inception until now. The award-winning Australian company, Intelligent Inventions, recipient of 13 international awards, has launched another winner: the revolutionary Rearing Bit with Brakes. Featuring the internationally renowned Winning Tongue Plate (WTP) bit, the Rearing Bit with Brakes is made from steel and includes two adjustable chains which apply nose, chin, and poll pressure, stopping unruly horses in their tracks. It is proven to create easy leverage over the horse to subdue unwanted behaviours, giving the handler total control for sales, race days, and daily training. Endorsed by trainers, handlers, veterinarians and stud farms: “It has been a game-changer.” – Greg Booth, Trainer/Vet. “We were able to remove the earmuffs. He has been an angel to lead around and stops them getting their tongue over.” – Nicole Luke, Trainer.
“These are a breakthrough.” – Ruby Chatterton, Foreman. “You will be amazed at the difference they can make.” – Mel Leitch, Trainer. The Rearing Bit with Brakes may be used in front of the horse’s bit for control in the race-day parade ring. It is also ideal for yearlings and young stallions at auction to reinforce pressure and release, teaching the horse to respond kindly.

Getting to know the horse you have By TANJA KRAUS
Ginger Coops has been going pretty well in the two rein setup I have had him in, but I wasn't 100 percent happy, so I tried him in a spade bit for the two rein setup. I was really happy and more importantly he seemed happier in this setup. I'm always focused on choosing the right equipment for the horse. When it comes to an off-the-track Thoroughbred, who has experience and a strong opinion on bits/equipment, it is important to try different things and find what works for him. I tried him in the hackamore first, then the snaffle but found him quite defensive and resistant in both. Whilst the frogmouth and spade may appear 'harsh' to many people, I've found that they are different enough to what he is used to, and function in a completely different way, which allows him to engage and communicate with me during the rides. Once you abandon the idea that the bit is for control and embrace the idea that the bit is for communication, and two way communication, it opens up a whole new world
Building a foundation with your horse is essential for getting the best of of him or h e r.

Horses helping humans By SUE SPENCE When I started Horses Helping Humans (HHH) 16 years ago, I had no idea it would become an award-winning program and earn the reputation it has of being an outcome based Equine Intervention so popular with family and youth services and for my story to be published by Pan Macmillan. We have now had 1000s of students through the program with proven outcomes of helping change lives for the better. It was these outcomes, which led me to license HHH so the program would help those in other communities. Becoming a licensee means you actually become part of your local community as only one license is granted per area. eg ( HHH Gold Coast, HHH Sunshine Coast etc ) Helping you become a respected youth and family service within your government boundary lines assures the quality and outcomes delivered at a professional level are the same in every area. This assures that case workers and counsellors in all areas can confidently refer to HHH for communications intervention and assist them with opening the doors of communication with their challenging clients. This helps them immensely when applying for their own funding, as HHH is a known program for helping with re-engagement back
into school or study. Youth and family services, school chaplains or counsellors, mental health organisations, child protection, homeless youth, DV services and the Justice Dept refer the students we work with. The training covers extensive communication and body language techniques as well as requiring horsemanship ground skills to be of a high level. (The program is based on professional horsemanship, self-regulation and life skills which translate straight into everyday life.) The License includes full business set up, extensive hands-on individual training with me at HHH on the Gold Coast as well as me working with Licensees at their property with their horses. It also includes, me speaking at Licensees’ local Youth and Family interagency meetings to discuss outcomes and the referral system, I contact local council, MPs and training colleges, my attendance at the opening as I organise a media launch and offer ongoing support. Everything from invoice templates and advertising, referral forms, training manuals, videos, workbooks for youth workers, horsemanship, media releases upon opening, follow up and our annual conference is included. It is the most rewarding career and it is a blessing to be able to help so many make positive changes in their lives.
Your Dream Career Starts Here... ™

The Baji Koen Equestrian Park Tokyo Supplied by FEI The Baji Koen Equestrian Park has won plaudits from the international equestrian community for the top notch facilities that have played a key role in the high quality of competition during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. But the Japan Racing Association (JRA) which owns and run the facilities, has far reaching plans to ensure barrier free access to equestrian sport. JRA has worked towards the development and preparation of the Equestrian Park, not just with the delivery of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in mind, but also with a view to boosting the long-term development of the sport. “We began planning the redevelopment of the venue even before Tokyo won the right to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” adviser to the JRA’s horse-affairs division Takahiro Nishio said. “The Equestrian Park was not initially built to cater to the specific needs and requirements of people with disabilities. “But through our preparations for the Paralympic Games, we have gained a better understanding of what we need to do to create a safe and welcoming structure which allows people with different impairments to fully enjoy all that equestrian sport has to offer. “All our development plans have been created to include accessibility requirements for people with disabilities so that the Equestrian Park, which also functions as a city park, can bring clear benefits to our community even after the Paralympic Games have ended.” Opened in 1940, the Equestrian Park was created to provide training for riders and horses, and to host equestrian competitions as well as educational and training programs. The venue was scheduled to host the equestrian competitions at the 1940 Olympic Games which were cancelled on account of war. It was a natural choice for the equestrian events at the Olympic Games that were subsequently held in Tokyo in 1964. While the original plan for equestrian put forward by the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee was for a temporary venue in the Tokyo Bay area, the JRA and the Japanese Equestrian Federation (JEF) pushed for the Page 38

alternative which was to reuse the 1964 Olympic equestrian venue at Baji Koen. The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) were in full support of this as the Equestrian Park would deliver a more tangible and useful legacy for equestrian sport in Japan. Post Paralympic Games, the JRA has ambitious plans to create pathways and programs that allow riders engaged in therapeutic programs to gradually move into Para Dressage competition. There are currently only a few therapeutic riding clubs in the country and the JRA wants to put in place the necessary structures that will allow these programs to develop across Japan. “The JRA has provided athletes at the Olympic and Paralympic Games with some incredible facilities in which to compete,” FEI Director of Games Operations Tim Hadaway said. “JRA has gone over and above with their support and have provided specialists like veterinarians, farriers, footing maintenance staff and equestrian instructors. “Through their affiliated companies, the JRA also provided feed and bedding, transportation of competition horses and turf maintenance advice for the fieldof-play on the Sea Forest Cross Country Course to ensure the best possible conditions for the equestrian competitions. “All the work the JRA has done to date is laying a solid founda-
tion for the development of Para Equestrian sport in Japan and they have led the way by example, through their support of the Japan Para Dressage team.” Mitsuhide Miyaji, Sho Inaba, Katsuji Taskashima and Soshi Yoshigoe are the four members of the Para Dressage team who trained and prepared for the Paralympic Games at the Equestrian Park and with the full support of the JRA. Mitsuhide Miyaji, 63, used to work as an assistant trainer at the JRA before he suffered a stroke in July 2005 and was left without feeling on the right side of his body. Tokyo 2020 is his second Paralympic Games after Rio 2016, where he was the only equestrian representative from Japan. A former jockey with the JRA, Katushi Takashima, 28, was injured during a race that left the right side of his body paralysed. He participated in the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018 and Tokyo 2020 was his first appearance at a Paralympic Games. Twenty six year-old Sho Inaba, who made his Paralympic debut in Tokyo 2020, was born with cerebral palsy that affected his lower limbs and he took up riding at the age of eight for rehabilitation in his hip joint. He represented his country at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018 where he finished 14th.
The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games was also a first for 21 year-old Soshi Yoshigoe who is a student at Nippon Sport Science University. He took up horse riding as part of his rehabilitation program but it was not until high school that he became interested in Para Dressage. Encouraged by the President of his University and colleagues, he has made his mark on the Para Equestrian scene in Japan. All four athletes hope that the Paralympics will be the catalyst for the continued development of Para Equestrian and other disability sports in Japan. “Until now, there has been little recognition of Para Sports in this country,” Mitsuhide Miyaji said. “But the Paralympics have been a good opportunity for many people to learn about Para Equestrian and for them to see how people with various disabilities can get involved in the sport. “There was no coverage of Para Equestrian Sport in Japan when I took part in the Paralympic Games in Rio 2016. But in the build up to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, there have been many live broadcasts in Japan because of the collaboration between the JRA and Green Channel, the Satellite Broadcasting Foundation for Horseracing, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. “This has allowed people to see for themselves what the sport has to offer.”

Holstein Park Jumanji 5 year old, 16.2 bay warmblood gelding. Sire: Holstein Park Jazzlander ( Jazz x Lander) Dam: Holstein Park Lorette (L’Espoir x Lander) A rare opportunity to purchase a quality young horse that has already had competition experience & proven himself as an easy calm quality competition horse. Jimmy as he is known around here, has been bought along slowly as a young horse and has just started working towards the novice level work. This is a seriously nice horse with the temperament and trainability to go through to the FEI levels. Three super paces, big walk, lovely trot and a highlight being the canter. These paces are only going to develop even more in time. Not a spooky or hot horse, just goes nicely off your leg. Really good in the contact. This is absolutely 100% my loss and someone elses gain. Will only be sold to a competition home under good instruction as I would really love to see him progress through into the FEI levels. This was a very very hard decision and was definitely not taken lightly. All I can say is I am going to regret letting this one go! The Horse Report
From Paddock to Show Ring Words by Alice Clarke Part 1 of 6. More to come in upcoming issues. Time to bring in that pony and transform him into your star… but not sure where you start? Every pony is different and every person has their own way of doing things, but we try to follow the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principal. We break it down into 6 categories which we will go through in the next 5 issues in coming months. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Maintenance Feeding Housing/Rugging Work/Training Show Gear for Horse/Rider Presentation
MAINTENANCE This is important, the basics when owning any horse and addressing your duty of care. These principals are a must before you start your show preparation and be done on a regular basis. No amount of money or work will transform your pony if you don’t practice the basics of pony/horse care. WORMING Your horse needs to be on a regular worming program appropriate to its age and environment. Young-stock are particularly susceptible to worm burdens so if your unsure your local vet can help you. It’s also a good
Page 44
idea to rotate using different brands or wormer. It’s been proven over time the worms can become resistant to the same wormer. HOOF CARE As the old saying goes, no hoof, no horse. It is critical to ensure your horses hooves are maintained regularly. ,QFRUUHFW KRRI FDUH FDQ DIIHFW PRYHPHQW FRQ¿UPDWLRQ and soundness. EQUINE DENTISTY A horses teeth continue to grow throughout it’s lifetime. To maintain optimal food absorption and to ensure comfort during its work your horse needs to be seen by D YHW RU TXDOL¿HG HTXLQH GHQWLVW RQ D UHJXODU EDVHV HANDLING This might sound silly but your pony must have basic handling. You should be able to catch it, lead it, brush it all over and handle it safely. Every time you interact with your pony you are in fact teaching it. It’s good to practice and teach your horse to stand still and tie up quietly for periods of time. This is important when it comes time for clipping and show prepping your horse as we will discuss in more detail in a later issue. Last but not least. It is important to spend this initial time with your equine building a relationship and trust, a true partnership. Just remember, horses are masters of body language not the English language. What you put in is what you will get back. Practice all this then you will be ready for Step 2 in the next PRINTED issue.

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.
T
he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).
While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).
KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin. These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.
Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.
As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.
The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.
Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.
KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS
Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
