Australia 13th in Para -Dressage in Tokyo By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Australia finished in 13th position in the Team competition at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games on a score of 206.458% as the Team competition concluded with the Grade V and Grade IV divisions at Baji Koen Equestrian Park. The competition was run over two days, starting with the athletes from Grades I, II and III performing first, leaving Grades IV and V to seal the fate of each country. While qualified Teams competing at the Games can have up to four Athletes taking part in the competition, for the Team Event only three athletes per team are allowed to be nominated to compete, meaning there is no drop score. Representing Australia in the Team competition was: Grade III – Emma Booth and Zidane Grade IV – Sharon Jarvis and Romanos Grade V – Amelia White and Genius Each of the Australian combinations did an outstanding job, displaying their ability to compete under difficult conditions on the world's greatest sporting stage. On the opening evening, Emma Booth and Zidane were Australia's first combination in the arena, and despite a few small errors, the duo earned 68.000% in the Grade III class. "It wasn’t our best performance. I made an error of course which obviously at this level you just can’t afford to be doing and that

along with a few other little mistakes afterwards the score just wasn’t up where it needed to be. But you know we went out and did the job and I think did the best we could given the situation,” Emma said. “Afterwards it is hard to keep your mind really focused after they have rung the bell early on in the test." Amelia White and Genius were the second pair to complete the Team Test, opening day two of competition in the Grade V division. Amelia and Genius looked stunning in the main arena throughout the duration of their test and secured a score of 70.558%, just less than 1% behind their Personal Best score. "He was really good, I think he definitely improved on the score from the previous test which was a goal,” Amelia said. “:I think there is always more in the tank and I think if you ask me if I am happy the answer is

Emotional end to Paralympic career From page 3 Sharon made history at Tokyo by becoming the only Paraequestrian athlete to represent Australia at three Games, and it is on this note that Sharon has made the decision to retire from international competition. "The part that makes it a lot harder is that I made a choice before Tokyo that this would be my last Games, so that was my last ride at a Paralympics," Sharon said. “The Paralympics have given me so much, I was a bit lost during my teenage years and didn’t know where I belonged.” “When I found the Paralympics I suddenly belonged to a family that was incredibly inclusive.” When reflecting on her Paralympic career Sharon said she hopes that she has been able to inspire others, even if just one person, to follow their dreams, no matter what that dream is. At the conclusion of the test, the three-time Paralympian was visibly emotional, and spoke of her bond with her horse Romanos

and thanked his owner, who had given her the opportunity to ride such a wonderful horse at her final Paralympic Games. “After Tokyo he will be returned to his owners, it’s very emotional as I’ve absolutely loved riding him,” she said. “We have had a wonderful two years together, where I have

been able to improve my skills and learn so much.” Sharon has no plans to leave the sport she loves entirely in the future, and she aims to give back to the sport by working as the EA High Performance ParaEquestrian Pathways Coordinator. Stefanie Maraun, EA Para-

Equestrian Manager, was proud of the overall performance of all combinations throughout the Team competition. “With the conclusion of the Team competition, I would like to congratulate all three riders on their performances, which has put Australia into thirteenth position,” she said. “The Australian riders held their own against some world-class combinations competing in Tokyo. “These performances couldn’t be achieved without all the support teams behind each of these riders, so a congratulations must also be extended to all those involved in getting the combinations to this point. “I would also like to acknowledge the incredible achievement of Sharon Jarvis, making history to become the only Para-equestrian athlete to represent Australia on three occasions and to wish her well in her future. We are lucky that Sharon will continue to inspire and contribute to Para-equestrian sport in Australia.”

How do you communicate with a Para Dressage horse? Supplied by FEI The unique bond between a horse and human, are important factors for success in elite equestrian sports. But what does this mean exactly for Para Dressage athletes competing at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games? While able-bodied Dressage athletes use a combination of hand, leg, and weight signals to communicate with their horses, some Para Dressage athletes require the use of compensating aids to make up for the physical or sensory limitation resulting from their disabilities. “Walking the way that I do is normal for me and so when I learned to ride, I also learnt in a way that was normal for me,” five time gold medallist Natasha Baker (GBR) said. “As I have minimal feeling from my hips down, my legs just hang when I'm on a horse, and they naturally follow the movement of the horse. When you see my legs moving, that's not me. It’s a completely involuntary movement. “This is the reason why I have to train my horses to different aids and am reliant on my voice. I train my horses to the smallest Page 4

of noises or words so they know exactly what I'm asking. “It can be a simple sound so they know that I want to go more forward or a command like ‘trot’ under my voice, and they know exactly what I mean.” While there is a broad range of movement that is standard for able-bodied Dressage athletes, Para Equestrians have to find and develop their own style of communication with their horse in order to compensate for their unique disabilities. Where necessary, athletes are allowed to use a variety of special equipment and aids which include specially designed saddles that assist the athlete with balance and support. Also permitted are the use of elastic bands to keep feet in stirrups, whips in each hand and adapted reins. In the case of Laurentia Tan from Singapore who developed cerebral palsy and profound deafness after birth, she relies on people to tell her when the music begins and ends and has a greater dependency on feeling in order to communicate with her horse. “I can ride different horses but I must have my own customised

looped reins, which are important partly because they are customised to the way I hold them,” Tan explained. “But the reins, which are the connection between my hands and the horse’s mouth, are like a telephone line which make my conversation with my horse soft, steady and ‘elastic’. “This contact is different depending on the horse I ride and is absolutely essential for me to bring out their best performance. “I am also sensitive to the feeling through my seat which facilitates the conversation between me and my horse. I can execute a good square halt through my seat. I can feel when my horse does a perfect straight square halt under me and when to give a correction if one leg is out of place.” As other Para Dressage athletes will attest, learning to interpret their horses’ body language is one of the keys to a successful sporting relationship. But training a horse to adapt and respond to the use of compensating aids also plays an important role in the development of the horse and athlete connection.

“Before a horse is ridden by a Para Athlete, it is first trained by an able-bodied rider with classic training aids and then retrained to adapt to the athlete’s disability,” Team USA’s Head of Para Equestrian Coach Development and High Performance Michel Assouline said. “The horse is trained to what the person does not have. So if an athlete does not have the full use their legs for example, the horse will be trained to receive cues and signals with a series of taps given through a compensating aid, instead of the legs. An athlete can also learn to use their voice and seat to communicate with their horse. “For athletes who are unable to use their legs, a tap becomes like a conductor’s baton, which signals to the horse when they should move. “An able-bodied trainer will usually begin this process and will train the horse by not using their legs, but with the tapping. So by the time the athlete takes over, the horse is already aware of what these cues represent. On average it takes around six months to a year for the horse to be truly confident and trustworthy.”

The Horse Report

Wolf teeth and what to do with them By SAMANTHA GUNTER, AEDP Wolf teeth, are often a question of concern in owners of young horses. The general consensus is that your young horse should have them removed before breaking. However, I will outline exactly why this thought process exists and why it isn’t always the best course of action. Firstly, what are wolf teeth and why do they exist in our horses? Wolf teeth are the remains of the ancient horse’s first premolar. Ancient fossils tell us that horses used to have seven molars with which to grind. This is attributed to the fact that the horse used to survive primarily in forest landscapes and eat bush-like food, much more like goats and sheep. When they migrated onto the plains and started consuming rougher grasses, their molars compensated by becoming bigger and flatter- making it easier to grind the rough grasses of their new landscape. Their first premolar became somewhat obsolete and today’s tiny wolf tooth is the result of this evolvement.

Nowadays the wolf tooth pokes through just in front of the horse’s first premolar by the age of one and they are completely useless to the horse’s masticatory needs. About 70% of horses will get wolf teeth, sometimes two (bilateral), sometimes only one (unilateral). They can be found most often in the upper jaw, but the occasional horse will also develop them in their lower jaw, however, this is much more rare. Blind wolf teeth refer to wolf teeth that develop under the gum and never erupt. So, why are these little teeth a problem and what will your dentist do about them? The consensus up until now has been to remove all wolf teeth in bitted horses. Wolf teeth are sensitive teeth, sitting in innervated gum and often with very little root hold-

The main problem associated with wolf teeth is their interference with the bit, hence why they are requested to be removed.

ing them in place. In fact, if wolf teeth are not extracted, a lot of wolf teeth will eventually fall out around the age of 10, give or take. The main problem associated with wolf teeth is their interference with the bit. When a bit is in the horse’s mouth, it shouldn’t touch the premolars unless pulled dramatically back in the mouth. Racing and polo stables tend to routinely remove all wolf teeth before breaking due to the nature of the sport- involving quite hard hand-to-mouth contact which can pull the bit back so as to contact the teeth. In pleasure and other sport horses, however, a new approach is slowly being adopted. When any tooth erupts in the horse’s mouth, the longer it has to erupt, the easier and kinder it is to extract. For example, pulling a molar out of a five-year-old will be a much bigger and intrusive job than pulling it out of a 25-year- old. The same principle exists for wolf teeth and it is this concept that is making some qualified

dentists rethink the previous ‘extract-every-wolf-tooth’ practise. Every horse is different and every wolf tooth is different. In today’s equine dentistry world, the phrase ‘less-is-more’ is being practised increasingly often. As with the grinding of the sharp points, the less your dentist can intrude with the horse’s natural grinding surface, the better. Remembering that this industry is relatively young, new information and concepts are being discussed and researched all the time. Therefore, what was once the assumed practice of pulling wolf teeth out of every horse is now being replaced by a case-by-case analysis. If a young horse is going to be broken and the impact of their wolf teeth is negligible in regards to the contact this horse will have with the bit, then leaving the wolf teeth a little longer will only make the entire process less invasive for the horse.

Change in approach to dealing with wolf teeth

AFTER- VET CARE

Equicare Australia 24 hour care and rehabilitation

From page 5 Especially if the horse is likely to be broken, then left for a while, less is definitely more when it comes to extracting teeth from a young horse’s mouth. While it is a known consequence that wolf teeth can affect the ridden horse, more often then not their removal can be left until a slightly older age, by which time the teeth will be fully erupted and relatively easy to remove. This is something I discuss with each individual owner, explaining the pros and cons of both courses of action and in most cases owners are happy to leave the tooth to mature a bit more. A young horse should be seen by a qualified dentist every six months, at which point the state of the wolf teeth in question, the amount of work the horse is doing, and the behaviours of the horse under saddle are all re-evaluated. Dentistry is now more than ever an industry of horsemen and women evaluating the best course of action for your individual horse. There is no hard and fast answer when it comes to wolf teeth, just many individual cases that need to be considered as such.

The Horse Report

Creating the winning glow of inner health By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic Producing a show horse in optimal health with a natural gleam of inner health does not happen overnight or by accident. It takes expert attention to detail, focusing on the daily diet, gut health, grooming, rugs, training and exercise management to create a glorious healthy show horse. Creating coat colour and shine Nutrition is of critical importance to produce intense coat colour and a natural shine. The most important nutrients for coat condition are copper and zinc (needed to produce melanin pigment), biotin and vitamin B6 (needed to produce keratin, the protein from which hair and hooves are made) and oils (for skin health and shine). In spring and autumn, it is common to see horses shining with apparent good health but are they really in optimum health? Green grass is rich in natural fats which make the coat shine even if the horse is mineral deficient. Horses always need mineral supplementation to balance the mineral deficiencies from their forage-based diets and to correctly balance critical mineral ratios. A mineral deficient horse can be 'healthy' (in that the horse is not unwell) but it cannot be in optimum health without a well-balanced diet supplying all nutritional needs. MINERALS Good nutrition can bring out the best coat colour a horse is genetically programmed to have. It is necessary to feed enough copper and zinc to allow the body to make the pigments that colour hair. The levels of copper and zinc also need to be balanced in relation to total dietary iron and manganese intake. When the levels of copper and zinc are not balanced with the iron status of the forage, a horse's coat can appear lighter than normal, faded or 'sun-bleached.' Many horse owners recognise that horses grazing poor quality pasture need supplementation but it is not well understood that even the best quality pasture possible does not give a horse the ideal balance of minerals. "Not all horses need a multi-vitamin supplement but every horse needs some supplementary vitamin E and minerals added to balance critical mineral ratios, even if they are grazing the best pasture in the country!" continued page 11

Page 10

Nutrition plays a crucial role in helping a horse produce a winning coat color and shine.

The short purple bars in this graph illustrate the mineral deficiencies in copper, zinc, selenium and iodine that commonly occur in grazing horses, even when their pasture contains prime quality, leafy, green grass. (Source: FeedXL).

Correcting mineral ratio imbalances from page 10 Providing the correct balance of minerals across the entire diet is important to allow the horse to absorb them in the right proportions. The relationships between total intake of calcium and phosphorous, and between copper, zinc, iron and manganese are critical. If mineral ratios are unbalanced, a horse can be deficient in a mineral even when the diet supplies 100% or more of the daily requirement. How do you know when the diet is right? The only way to know if your horse's diet is balanced is to measure or estimate the mineral levels of everything the horse eats and compare the amounts and ratios to the daily nutritional requirements. The "Nutritional Requirements of Horses" can be found free online in a book of the same name, published by the National Research Council (NRC) in 2007. Equine nutritionists use computer programs to check total intake and each of the important nutrients. They calculate the critical mineral ratios to check they are within recommended ranges (it is surprising how often they are not). When choosing a mineral balancer powder, pellet or feed, look for one that balances these ratios over the whole diet. Pre-mixed feeds can only balance mineral levels correctly if used at the recommended rate. Horses fed less than the recommended rate will need a mineral balancer powder or pellet to top up mineral levels. The implications of providing correct mineral balance run much deeper than just coat colour. Zinc and copper are microminerals necessary for healthy skin, hair and hooves. Scientific research has shown that the horn from hooves containing lower zinc concentrations are not as hard and strong as those with higher levels of zinc.

The horse pictured top left shows the shine from grazing green pasture, but his coat appears brown due to a copper/zinc/iron imbalance. After correcting these mineral ratios by reducing iron intake and increasing the level of supplemental copper and zinc, he was able to show his true genetic colour black.

Copper imbalance and deficiency also causes rough, 'hooked' hairs giving a 'wormy' appearance which can be confused with the dull-coated, ill-thrifty look caused by worms, calcium deficiency or ingestion of mycotoxins. These photos show the same horse before and after correcting a dietary copper imbalance. Zinc is used in more than 100 enzymes in the body responsible for a large number of cell functions including energy metabolism, cell division and keratinization (growth of hair and hooves). Copper forms an important part of numerous enzymes in the body, including some responsible for connective tissue formation, pigmentation of coat colour, cell res-

piration and antioxidant functions. What about sun-bleaching? The term "a sun-bleached appearance" is often used to describe a coat that is lighter than it was genetically designed to be due to diet deficient in copper or containing unbalanced copper, zinc, iron and manganese levels. However, sunlight does react with sweat on the coat resulting in true

bleaching, even when the mineral balance of the diet is correct. The UV rays from the sun damage melanin, the pigment which colours hair. The salt in sweat strips the protective oils and waxes from the hair cuticle, so that individual hairs stand upright with exposed, rough surfaces that give the coat a dry, rough appearance. continued page 12

Preventing horses ‘sun-bleaching’ From page 11 To prevent true sun-bleaching it is necessary to hose sweat off thoroughly at least daily in addition to feeding a correctly balanced diet. Coats can also appear dull or bleached just before shedding begins at the turn of season. If your horse's diet is properly balanced, you will soon see the rich and shiny new coat underneath as you brush out the dead hairs. Over time, a well-balanced diet in conjunction with good rugging, stable or paddock management and hoof care practices will lead to growth of the best mane, tail and hoof tissue that a horse is genetically programmed to produce. OILS Even when a grazing horse is apparently shining with good health, the diet will be mineral deficient unless supplemented. The shine in that instance comes from the naturally occurring oils in the grass regardless of the mineral balance of the diet. Whilst any type of oil in the diet can help with shine, a healthy diet for a horse will balance the polyunsaturated fatty acid ratios towards the levels and ratios naturally found in grass. Grass contains about four times the amount of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids than omega-6. Dried grass (hay and chaff), grains and most other vegetable oils (including canola and sunflower seeds or oil) are much higher in pro-inflammatory omega-6 compared to omega-3. A horse eating lots of hay or hard feed needs more omega-3 added to the diet to increase the omega 3 to 6 ratio to a level similar to grass. Omega 3 rich supplements containing whole or freshly ground linseeds, stabilized linseed oil, DHA or EPA-rich algal meal and fish oils are best if your horse is relying on hay for roughage or is on a high grain diet. Marine-sourced forms of omega-3 (DHA and EPA) provide unique health benefits. EPA omega-3s are particularly potent in promoting healthy skin and connective tissue. DHA is essential for brain and nervous system function. These omega-3s are particularly useful for helping to manage itchy skin, arthritis, respiratory disease and other inflammatory conditions. Stable lights Artificial lighting can be used to maintain a short summer coat out-of-season. Light influences melatonin levels in the brain and when melatonin levels are gradually increasing or decreasing, the brain releases hormones to begin coat shedding so a new summer or winter coat comes through. Rug management Making a horse hot will not hasten the loss of a winter coat and sweat retained under a rug can cause bleaching. Development of a summer coat is a daylength response. Using heavy rugs will not trigger coat shedding, although the rug's physical movement over the coat does help to remove loose hairs. Page 12

In cold weather, individual hairs stand upright to insulate the horse, giving a fluffy appearance. Rugs smooth individual hairs down over the body which creates a sleeker appearance. Keeping the horse covered and warm on a cold show day until it enters the ring allows the horse to display a better show coat. Grooming The old adage that elbow grease creates a shining coat is true. Grooming stimulates blood flow to the skin which nourishes the hair follicle. Harder brushes stimulate the skin's natural oil production from the sebaceous glands. Soft brushes distribute the oils along the hair follicle, smoothing the cuticle scales and creating a sleek, shining coat. Silicone 'show shine' sprays also coat and smooth down the outer scales on the hair cuticle, but they do tend to attract dust and can be sticky to touch.

This broodmare is the epitome of good health achieved by well-balanced diet.

What to expect when expecting (equine edition) By Dr MATTHEW MACKEE BVSc The Rivers Equine Vets

My mare is in her last trimester what do I need to do to get her ready for foaling down? Vaccinations - The mare should have tetanus prophylaxis six weeks prior to foaling down, maintain Hendra Virus prophylaxis (some studs require equine herpes virus vaccination . consult your veterinarian) Worming - regular worming protocol with last worming recommended four to six weeks prior to due date Housing - The mare should be placed in foaling environment two to three weeks prior to expecting foaling date z Clean adequate room, quiet and away from stressors (ideally 12ft x 12ft in size) z Straw preferable over shavings Nutrition - It is recommended that mares are fed a well-balanced ration diet and in the last trimester (last three - four months) of pregnancy it is recommended to feed one to five times maintenance. This will increase to two times maintenance once the foal is born in early lactation. It is recommended to provide good quality leafy hay ab-lib throughout the last trimester and early lactation Miscellaneous - Caslick removal two to four weeks prior to foaling down. What should I have on hand when my mare is close to foaling? It is always recommended to have a foaling kit on-hand (Foaling kits are available from The Rivers Equine Vets for information email: admin@theriversequinevets.com.au) z Head torch z Tail wraps z Disposable gloves z Clock/ stopwatch (keep a check of time since birth) z Chlorhexidine/ betadine z Cotton wool roll z Garbage bag z Foal enema z Stethoscope

It’s best not to disturb the mare during the early stages of foaling.

What are the signs that my mare is close to foaling? z

Mammary gland development - can begin as early as eight months gestation z There is NOTICEABLE enlargement two to six days prior (top right photo) z”Waxing-up” this is actually small droplets of colostrum and this occurs two to four days prior (bottom right photo) z Vulval conformation changes - swelling, relaxed “flabby”, elongation and increased space between the labia z NOTE: There should be no vaginal discharge present until imminent parturition z ”Dropping” relaxation of the abdominal and pelvic ligaments z Behavioural changes - pacing, flank watching, flehmen response, lying down, ”nesting”, pawing at ground and more Continued page 15

What To Expect When Expecting (Equine Edition) From page 14 My mare is showing signs of imminent parturition what do I need to look for? z The mare will undergo three stages of parturition: STAGE I - Coordinated Uterine Contractions z This is where the mare can be seen expressing different behaviours such as holding her tail out, getting up and down, looking at flank and many more behaviours that can easily be confused with colic z Do not disturb the mare during this stage z This stage normally takes up to one hour STAGE II - Foal Delivery This is initially seen as the amniotic sac (white bag) that will protrude from the vulva of the mare z This will then be followed by normally one or two front limbs and shortly after the nose of the foal (this is normal presentation of the foal) z The foal will then be delivered within a short period of time - normally in normal presentation assistance is not required, however, it is recommended to be present for this stage of the pregnancy in case of complications. z This stage normally takes no longer than 30 minutes z

STAGE III -Expulsion of Foetal Membranes (Placenta) z The placenta should be expelled within three hours in its entirety z Once expelled. Do not throw this away and save for examination The foal has been delivered, now what? Mare z Check the mare’s vulva for injuries z Monitor for placental expulsion (within three hours) . Keep and examine the placenta in entirety z Allow the mare to bond with the foal (particularly if maiden mare)

Foal ”1-2-3 Rule” STANDING - one hour - Greater than two hours - call your veterinarian z SUCKLING - two hours - Greater than three hours - call your veterinarian z DEFAECATION - three hours - Greater than three hours give enema - Given enema and still no defaecation within 15 minutes of treatment - call your veterinarian z URINATION – six to 10 hours z

Umbilicus - DO NOT CUT THE UMBILICUS - This will break naturally at birth - Apply 0.5% chlorhexidine solution or 1% iodine solution (Betadine) to the foals umbilicus to avoid infection two to three times daily for three to five days

I’m worried my foal hasn’t had enough colostrum what should I do? • Call your veterinarian to arrange a simple IgG test to assess adequate passive transfer of immunity from the mare • This test is performed between 12 – 24 hours after foaling My foal is up drinking, defaecating and appears normal, should I get a veterinarian to assess him/her? • This largely depends on your experience and competence • If you are inexperienced or unsure then call your veterinarian to check the foal over thoroughly when suitable within 24 hours. Treating Ross River with Diet and Herbs By VICTORIA FERGUSON There is a lot of Ross River Fever about at the moment, even though it is the end of winter, I have been treating this successfully with my prescribed herbal remedies for many years, so if you would like some help, please contact me. Here's a case history from last year featuring Kaye Watson's dressage pony Calypso. Kaye Watson's beautiful dressage pony Calypso returned to the arena at the Nationals to take a 2nd & 3rd in the Novice Pony classes ridden by Jessie Fleming. Kaye consulted me in March to prescribe and dispense herbal remedies for Clippy who was under severe viral attack. She had been at the vet hospital twice, but was not fully recovering from respiratory infections and muscle stiffness, with a weakened immune system and filled legs with recurrent breakouts. Kaye understood that the mare needed at least a full blood cycle of herbal treatment (12 weeks), and this was carried out using liquid herbal extracts syringed orally twice daily. Clippy loved her herbs from day one and was also enthusiastic

ANTI-VIRAL HERBS We herbalists have a number of proven anti-viral herbs to attack viruses of all kinds. Thanks to the extensive work of Stephen Harrod Buhner in America, we can select herbs to target particular viruses, so knowing which viruses are in residence is pretty important. Having said that fortunately there are quite a few herbs which also have broad anti-viral activity. I have treated many horses for viruses and post-viral syndrome over the years and continue to do so, if you would like help, please contact me via email at enquiries@victoriaferguson.com .au For more information on my consultation service have a look at my website … www.victoriaferguson.com.au/c onsultations

out and only has a diameter of 10 cm and a capacity of approximately 45L. We know quite a bit about the anatomy and physiology of the GI tract and it does seem a little bit out of whack. But in the wild as nature had intended, the horse will survive extremely well because he or she is not expected to ingest large amounts of feed at one time but rather is out grazing continually moving around stopping to rest when required, to drink and sleep.

Roughage is undoubtedly the most important basis of the equine diet and horses really should consume approximately 1.5 to 3% of their body weight on a daily basis, it is recommended that at least half of horse's diet should be roughage in the form of hay or pasture. The equine gastrointestinal system is easily upset and if sudden changes are made in the diet it can definitely increase the risk of colic and other digestive issues. Continued page 21

www.hiform.com.au

The question 'what is the right amount of hay for my horse and how should I feed it?' is often asked. Horses are strict herbivores, grazing on good quality pasture or being supplied good quality hays will ensure a healthy digestive system. Once we move away from the idea of feeding roughage, within a short time start we begin to experience problems with our horse's digestive system. This can lead to serious problems such as ulcers, diarrhoea, choke and worst of all colic. We suggest feeding a feed that is not wet or soaked because this does not encourage the normal process at the point of the mouth and the mouth is the first contact your horse makes with his feed. If you are using supplements, you will be required to dampen the feed but this means damp bordering on dry, not wet or soaked. When one first looks at the horse’s digestive tract you could be excused for thinking that it was a mistake. Take the equine stomach, it is very small considering the size of the horse and only has a small capacity very similar to that of a Safeway or Coles shopping bag, not very big. The small intestine is approximately 22 meters in length if you were to stretch it

Many parts of Australia experience low rainfal, and subsequently, very poor pasture growth. When the weather gets cooler, we are getting a lot of questions from horse owners with little or no pasture, on how best to replace the grass component of their horse’s diet. The choice of possible hay types, given the current season, may be more down to availability than any other factors, but where available, good quality pasture/meadow/grass hay is normally a good starting point. No matter what sort of hay you can get (and provided your horse or pony doesn't have any additional issues affecting hay type/consumption), the guidelines around amounts generally follow the same rules. Here is a quick guide to the main questions. How much hay should I feed? Horses need to eat a minimum of 1-1.5% (on a Dry Matter basis) of their body weight in roughage per day just to keep their gut happy and healthy. Majority of hays contain around 85-90% dry matter. Horses will typically consume between 2-2.5% of their body weight overall each day as a combination of pasture, hay

Equine Health Feature

History and symptoms of Hendra Virus Hendra Virus was discovered following an outbreak of illness in horses in a large racing stable in the suburb of Hendra, Brisbane in 1994. The natural host for Hendra Virus is the flying fox. The virus can spread from flying foxes to horses, horses to horses and rarely, from horses to people. Since Hendra Virus was identified in 1994, more than 90 horses are known to have been infected. These animals have either died as a direct result of their infection or have been euthanised. Several hundred people have been exposed to Hendra Virus infected horses but have not been infected. However, seven people have been confirmed to have Hendra Virus following high levels of exposure to infected horses. Four of these people died, the most recent in 2009. While the exact route of infection is unknown, it is thought that horses may contract Hendra Virus infection from sniffing or eating matter recently contaminated with flying fox urine, saliva or birth products. Spread is possible wherever horses have close contact with body fluids of an infected horse. Small amounts of the virus may be present in a horse's body fluids, particularly nasal secretions, for a few days before they become sick. The seven confirmed human cases all became infected following high level exposures to respiratory secretions and/or blood of a horse infected with Hendra Virus, following activities such as assisting with post mortem examination of a dead horse without adequate personal protective equipment (PPE), performing certain veterinary procedures or having extensive exposure to respiratory secretions without adequate PPE. Other people have reported similar contact with

Hendra symptoms in horses Hendra Virus can cause a range of symptoms in horses. Usually a sudden fever and either respiratory or neurological illness and rapid death. In some cases the onset of illness is gradual

Hendra virus can be spread from horses to humans. infected horses but have remained well and their blood tests have shown no evidence of infection. No one with a lower level exposure (e.g. grooming, feeding, patting) has ever developed Hendra Virus infection or shown evidence of infection in blood tests. Hendra Virus is killed by heat, drying and cleaning with detergents. A vaccine to prevent Hendra Virus infection in horses has been available since November 2012. While the vaccine has been shown to be safe and to provide high levels of protection in horses, continued efforts to reduce exposure of horses to Hendra Virus are essential. It is important to protect horse food and water from contamination by flying fox fluids, isolate sick horses early while awaiting test results, and pay attention to standard hygiene and cleaning practices. Symptoms can include: * Laboured breathing * Frothy &/or blood stained nasal discharge * A temperature (usually but not always higher than 40°C) * Neurological changes, including tilting of the head, loss of vision, abnormal muscle twitching, weakness and loss of balance * Colic like discomfort. Most cases in horses are fatal but occasionally a horse will survive the infection. The reported mortality rate in infected horses is greater than 70%.

Hendra symptoms in people If you have been in contact with an infected horse please seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms typically develop between five and 21 days after contact with an infectious horse. Fever, cough, sore throat, headache and tiredness are common initial symptoms. Meningitis or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) can then develop, causing headache, high fever, and drowsiness, convulsions and coma. Hendra Virus infection can be fatal. Equitana Melbourne rescheduled until 2022 By ROD LOCKWOOD The COVID pandemic is a nightmare that will not go away, devastating small businesses and locking us down for weeks on end. It is depressing to see border closures, social distancing rules and curfews restricting us, but we all need to respect the health requirements. For EQUITANA here we are yet again, devastated to advise that for a third time, due to the uncertainty created by the impacts of the Delta variant of COVID-19, we have been left with no choice but to cancel this edition of the event. There is still too much uncertainty in the current environment to proceed in November. It is deeply disappointing that the equine community from around Australia will not be able to come together to enjoy the fun and excitement of EQUITANA Melbourne for the second year in a row – we had such high hopes! We are confident that moving the event to 10 to 13 November 2022 will finally see us enjoying EQUITANA Melbourne in all her glory. More of the population will be vaccinated, we will have the ability to cross state borders more freely and we’ll be able to deliver the EQUITANA Melbourne that we all love. The pandemic has had a stranglehold on the events industry, with over 18 months of sporadic deliveries, dozens of cancellations and missed experiences throughout. As passionate providers of events, our team desperately wants to continue to deliver unforgettable events for our attendees long into the future. As for right now, to achieve that goal, we need your support.

For those who can, we ask that you please retain your tickets and support this event and join us for EQUITANA Melbourne in November 2022. We can’t wait to be back at the Melbourne Showgrounds with you next year for what is going to be one hell of a celebration. We promise it will be worth the wait. All purchased tickets are valid for the 2022 event, and as a way to say thank you for supporting us, all Super Ticket and Day Ticket holders who roll their ticket over for 2022 will be given a voucher to spend in the

exhibition halls at the event. Ticket holders who are not able to attend the new dates will be able to apply for a refund, minus admin fees until 24/09/21. TicketBooth will be in touch with all ticket holders directly with more information. We send a heartfelt thanks to all our EQUITANA Melbourne community for sticking with us during this time, your support means the world to us. With the expected transition to post-COVID normalcy, EQUITANA Melbourne 2022 will return as Australia’s greatest equine show.

RESCHEDULED TO 10 TO 13 NOVEMBER 2022

Aussies claim silver in Jumping Nations Cup By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA The Australian Nations Cup Jumping Team has ascended the podium at the CSIO3* Nations Cup Competition, Drammen in Norway to claim second place. In a nail biting competition that went down to the wire, the Australian team finished in equal second alongside Belgium and France, just behind the winning team of Ireland. The first round of the competition saw the Australians in the hunt for a victory from the beginning with all three Australian combinations jumping a clear round. Impressively Australia was the only country that had all riders who entered the arena during the first round jump clear, and with only three riders on the team (most other teams had four riders which allowed for a drop score) the pace set by Australia saw them as a forced to be reckoned with. Jake Hunter riding Jativia also jumping a second clear round anchoring the Australians in the top of the field. This performance is made even more impressive by considering the young jumper was making his Nations Cup debut at Drammen. When asked about how he felt competing for Australia for the first time Jake said: "Seriously delighted hopefully many more to come. Amy Graham and Hilary Scott have minded me well."

Page 28

Fellow team members, Amy Graham riding Coleraine des Bergeries and Hilary Scott riding Oaks Milkyway, both had one rail in the second round which was still able to secure Australia second place.. Unlike Jake both Amy and Hilary have previous experience representing Australia at Nations Cup events with both riders part of the 2020 bronze medal winning team in Wellington, USA. The past 12 months have proved tough for all Australian riders with the disruptions caused by COVID-19, and for

our Europe based riders the terrifying spread of EHV-1 last year which unfortunately saw Amy Graham and her team with a positive case. "I was so excited to be here and with Hilary and Jake, they are so professional and supportive, it’s a privilege to jump with them. Coco (Coleraine des Bergeries) is still returning to form from her EHV-1 sickness, I was nervous about us as a pair performing well enough, but she was gold and really stepped up,” Amy said. “Thank you to the EA High Performance Program and

Todd Hinde (EA High Performance Jumping Manager) for supporting us," . The Australian Team consisted of: Amy Graham and Coleraine des Bergeries, owned by Amy and Phillipe Jardot Jake Hunter and Jativia, owned by Global Event Horses, Brian Morrison and Chris Hunt Hilary Scott and Oaks Milkyway, owned by Alice Cameron/Oaks Sport Horses The team Chef d’Equipe for the competition was Caroline Graham.

Whiskers to stay put for EA competitions By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA The EA Board has voted to implement the recent FEI rule to ban the trimming of horse sensory hairs across all EA National Disciplines in the interests of horse welfare. At the 2020 FEI General Assembly, a new rule that prohibits the clipping/shaving of sensory hairs was passed as part of the veterinary regulations, which came into effect on 1st July 2021. Vibrissae, or sensory hairs/whiskers, are the long stiff hairs growing on the chin, mouth and around the eyes and are used as organs of touch by the horse. The FEI Veterinary Committee believes that the horse’s sensory hairs must not be trimmed or removed as it reduces the horse’s sensory ability. The FEI rule, which states that horses are not permitted to compete in FEI events “if the horse’s sensory hairs have been clipped and/or shaven or in any other way removed

unless individual sensory hairs have been removed by a veterinarian to prevent pain or discomfort for the horse," will

now also apply to all EA National Disciplines. There will be a transition period from now until 1st January

2022, when the rule will come into full effect. No elimination or penalty will be incurred during the transition period.

The power is in the rider’s presence By TANJA KRAUS

I help a lot of horse and rider combinations with a lot of different challenges Anxious horse Anxious rider Balance Psychology Discipline Specific Training Connection Biomechanics Rehabilitation The list just keeps going. But the one thing that remains consistent no matter what the training, what the 'problem', what the purpose - it begins with the presence of the rider. And presence begins on the ground, in fact it begins before you even catch your horse, it begins with you and the way you make your coffee in the morning. Your horse is present all the time - that's all he knows how to be and our biggest breakdown between horse and human is because we are not. Feel - begins with presence Timing - begins with presence Skills - begin with presence Everything begins with your ability to be present, observe without judgement or attachment, and hold your space. You see here in this picture of Ginger

Coops and I herding a cow - we are both focused on the cow. I had Phil Monaghan on the fence, walking me through the process. I had to be able to listen to him without losing my focus on the cow and feel on Ginger Coops - that's what made the session so successful, and helped Ginger

Coops immediately know what it was that we were doing. Be present - it truly is a gift. For more information, - visit www.horsemanshipforperformance.com and subscribe to the newsletter for free articles and updates.

REARING BIT WITH BRAKES

Rearing Bit with Brakes Introducing the 5 star-rated patented design Rearing Bit with Brakes for complete control. Rearing bits have not changed since their inception until now. The award-winning Australian company, Intelligent Inventions, recipient of 13 international awards, has created another winner: the revolutionary Rearing Bit with Brakes. Featuring the internationally renowned Winning Tongue Plate (WTP) bit, the Rearing Bit with Brakes is made from steel and includes two adjustable chains which apply nose, chin, and poll pressure, stopping unruly stallions and horses in their tracks. This Rearing bit has proven to create easy leverage over the horse to subdue unwanted behaviours, giving the handler total control for sales, race days, and daily. Endorsed by trainers, handlers, veterinarians, and stud farms "It has been a game-changer." - Greg Booth, Trainer/Vet. "We were able to remove the earmuffs. He has been an angel to lead around and stops them getting their tongue over." - Nicole Luke, Trainer. These are a breakthrough." - Ruby Chatterton, Foreman. "You will be amazed at the difference they can make." - Mel Leitch, Trainer The Rearing bit may be used in front of the horse's bit for control in the race-day parade ring. The bit is ideal for yearlings and young stallions at auction to reinforce pressure and release, teaching the horse to respond kindly. Tanja celebrates 10 years of TKH By TANJA KRAUS I can't even begin to explain the gratitude I am feeling right now, I've spent the weekend celebrating a decade in business - 10 years of being wholly and solely 'Tanja Kraus Horsemanship'. I've spent a couple of hours looking for some photos and all I can say is wow. I knew it wouldn't be possible to share most of the photos and experiences from the past 10 years, and so I thought I would do a few 'flashbacks' - my first client horse, my first private lesson clients, my first clinics - things like that, and to be honest, I cannot wipe the smile off my face after going through 10 years of memories. I started out by taking on outside horses for starting undersaddle. After about a year, I was teaching private lessons, then I started clinics - kids’ clinics were first, then adults, the rest you could say is history. It’s not possible to thank everyone, or mention everyone by name, and I do appreciate all of you - everyone who has been a student, been to a clinic, hosted a clinic, sent me a horse, purchased a DVD or e-book, 'liked or shared' something on Facebook - the list just goes on. You truly cannot have a successful business in this industry without the constant support of so many and for that I thank each and every one of you, and count you in my gratitude each and every day. But for some fun, I thought I’d do a few 'flashbacks'. From Lisa Foxridge at Farm Polish Arabian

Horses, who sent me my very first client horse to start - Teles A Story - to Karen from Greenfield's Stud who was one of my first private students. Her weekly lessons grew into colt starting, lessons, trailer loading, foal playing (oh I mean training). Haylee and Kava were in those first few years too, Megan from Hoofmatters who did it all sent me horses, did clinics and privates and has recommended countless people to me. Corine, my BFF, who not only trusted me with her beloved Fig, and her kid’s pony, but beyonce - the first racehorse I ever started. Not to mention the constant, unwavering support - be it a listening ear, pep talks, positivity, or the odd day drink when the occasion called for it. Phil - well what can I say - not much. He’s been there for the highs, the lows and to talk me off the ledge more than once. From the immediate encouragement when I said I was thinking about 'hanging out my shingle' ( "just do it" were the profound words

Horses helping humans By SUE SPENCE When I started Horses Helping Humans (HHH) 16 years ago, I had no idea it would become an award-winning program and earn the reputation it has of being an outcome based Equine Intervention so popular with family and youth services and for my story to be published by Pan Macmillan. We have now had 1000s of students through the program with proven outcomes of helping change lives for the better. It was these outcomes, which led me to license HHH so the program would help those in other communities. Becoming a licensee means you actually become part of your local community as only one license is granted per area. eg ( HHH Gold Coast, HHH Sunshine Coast etc ) Helping you become a respected youth and family service within your government boundary lines assures the quality and outcomes delivered at a professional level are the same in every area. This assures that case workers and counsellors in all areas can confidently refer to HHH for communications intervention and assist them with opening the doors of communication with their challenging clients. This helps them immensely when applying for their own funding, as HHH is a known program for helping with rePage 32

engagement back into school or study. Youth and family services, school chaplains or counsellors, mental health organisations, child protection, homeless youth, DV services and the Justice Dept refer the students we work with. The training covers extensive communication and body language techniques as well as requiring horsemanship ground skills to be of a high level. (The program is based on professional horsemanship, self-regulation and life skills which translate straight into everyday life situations.) The License includes full business set up, extensive hands-on individual training with me at HHH on the Gold Coast as well as me working with Licensees at their property with their horses. It also includes, me speaking at Licensees’ local Youth and Family interagency meetings to discuss outcomes and the referral system, I contact local council, MPs and training colleges, my attendance at the opening as I organise a media launch and offer ongoing support. Everything from invoice templates and advertising, referral forms, training manuals, videos, workbooks for youth workers, horsemanship, media releases upon opening, follow up and our annual conference is included. It is the most rewarding career and it is a blessing to be able to help so many make positive changes in their lives.

he used to convince me), to then having to deal with the simple - logo design, adverts etc to the complicated "this is happening what should I do about it". He’s been there, day in, day out with a listening ear, a shoulder, or a kick up the butt depending on what was needed at the time. A great horseman in his own right, bought me my first Western saddle, I’m blessed to walk beside you. And then you have the mentors. Ken Faulkner showing me a world with horses that I did not know existed (Ken was talking about energy and connection before they were buzzwords) and Eitan, well those who have had the privilege of being in the same room know what I’m talking about. All the 'stuff' along the way - the making of DVD's, the magazine covers and articles, photoshoots, the books, the competitions, the travel. And the horses. Some I meet briefly, some for a while, some for a long time. Some fill you with joy, some break your heart, but each one of them teaches me something that I can share.

Holstein Park Jumanji 5 year old, 16.2 bay warmblood gelding. Sire: Holstein Park Jazzlander ( Jazz x Lander) Dam: Holstein Park Lorette (L’Espoir x Lander) A rare opportunity to purchase a quality young horse that has already had competition experience & proven himself as an easy calm quality competition horse. Jimmy as he is known around here, has been bought along slowly as a young horse and has just started working towards the novice level work. This is a seriously nice horse with the temperament and trainability to go through to the FEI levels. Three super paces, big walk, lovely trot and a highlight being the canter. These paces are only going to develop even more in time. Not a spooky or hot horse, just goes nicely off your leg. Really good in the contact. This is absolutely 100% my loss and someone elses gain. Will only be sold to a competition home under good instruction as I would really love to see him progress through into the FEI levels. This was a very very hard decision and was definitely not taken lightly. All I can say is I am going to regret letting this one go! ‘Babs’ as she is affectionately known as, is by the very successful sire Turberry Tom Kitten. She successfully competed at royal level with previous owners together with Show horse council comps and has always come home with the ribbons. Babs recently started her dressage career and at her first comp received very high scores in both her tests. She received lovely comments by both judges and spectators. Babs has lovely big movement that allows her not only to excel in the show ring but succeed in the dressage arena too. She is most suited to a confident child wanting to go up the levels and would also make a very versatile interschool’s mount. She’s a pony that always tries to please her rider so she’s capable of anything that’s asked. She needs minimal work down at shows and is super easy to prepare. The Horse Report

From Paddock to Show Ring Words by Alice Clarke Part 1 of 6. More to come in upcoming issues. Time to bring in that pony and transform him into your star… but not sure where you start? Every pony is different and every person has their own way of doing things, but we try to follow the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principal. We break it down into 6 categories which we will go through in the next 5 issues in coming months. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Maintenance Feeding Housing/Rugging Work/Training Show Gear for Horse/Rider Presentation

MAINTENANCE This is important, the basics when owning any horse and addressing your duty of care. These principals are a must before you start your show preparation and be done on a regular basis. No amount of money or work will transform your pony if you don’t practice the basics of pony/horse care. WORMING Your horse needs to be on a regular worming program appropriate to its age and environment. Young-stock are particularly susceptible to worm burdens so if your unsure your local vet can help you. It’s also a good

Page 44

idea to rotate using different brands or wormer. It’s been proven over time the worms can become resistant to the same wormer. HOOF CARE As the old saying goes, no hoof, no horse. It is critical to ensure your horses hooves are maintained regularly. ,QFRUUHFW KRRI FDUH FDQ DIIHFW PRYHPHQW FRQ¿UPDWLRQ and soundness. EQUINE DENTISTY A horses teeth continue to grow throughout it’s lifetime. To maintain optimal food absorption and to ensure comfort during its work your horse needs to be seen by D YHW RU TXDOL¿HG HTXLQH GHQWLVW RQ D UHJXODU EDVHV HANDLING This might sound silly but your pony must have basic handling. You should be able to catch it, lead it, brush it all over and handle it safely. Every time you interact with your pony you are in fact teaching it. It’s good to practice and teach your horse to stand still and tie up quietly for periods of time. This is important when it comes time for clipping and show prepping your horse as we will discuss in more detail in a later issue. Last but not least. It is important to spend this initial time with your equine building a relationship and trust, a true partnership. Just remember, horses are masters of body language not the English language. What you put in is what you will get back. Practice all this then you will be ready for Step 2 in the next PRINTED issue.

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin. These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
