LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor We’re almost there! I am thinking about green grass and sunshine. I can picture the flowers blooming and hear the birds chirping, can you? Are you ready for spring? I know I am! I’m even looking forward to horse hair flying in the air as my four legged friends begin shedding that winter hair. We have lots of tack sales, trade shows and swap meets to keep us busy in the meantime. Check out the Calendar of Events to find an event close to you. Clean out that tack room and swap off the things you aren’t using to make room for the new and go bid on some goodies for you and your horse. Until next month.... Think warm spring-like thoughts, clean out that tack room, get to a tack sale or swap, if you are really “feeling it” pick a nice day and spend some time in the saddle, but whatever you do, make every second count....and don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

Maiden Mare.....Too Old? ecranch Is 18 years old to breed a maiden mare? She is a successful rodeo horse and we would like to give her a break and raise a colt out of her. Do most maiden mares foals tend to be small? Thanks! Warriors Mom Get a good exam done on her, flush her, culture her, bred her...all you can do is try...your chances of her getting in foal are alot less....most maiden mares, not matter age will produce a smaller foal....but not always I have had maiden mares that foaled smaller foals and the baby was a good height and weight and maturity. I have had some older maiden get in foal no prob, I have other that took me 5x + to get in foal. All depends on how the reproductive system of your mare looks. I would take her to a good repro vet have her examined during normal estrus, and again at ovulation. You may have to use some HCG or possibly regumate. Its always a gamble. Lil_Pony35 Every vet in the entire world will tell you that it’s much harder to get an older mare to settle and carry to term as a maiden. It’s not impossible but you can guarantee it will be more expensive. Follow the recommendations of the last post and make sure she is a little on the fatter side when you go to breed. I hope she settles for ya!! Tdove If she is reproductive healthy, not too old. MinorRed It’s not only if she will settle but how hard will the foaling be on her. At that age with her not having any foals her cervix could be slightly hardened, this will make foaling difficult on her. I have seen it go both ways. Older maidens settle first try and have an easy foaling, as well as hard breeders and foaling complications. There are always risk to breeding mares.
Page 4
Blondes Are Wild I bred my mare as an 18 year old. We had to AI her 3 times that year, and the vet had to perform magic tricks and a fertility dance. We finally got her to take, and she had a healthy foal. Her baby was actually quote large. Unfortunately, I was only able to get one baby out of that mare, but I am lucky enough to have one amazing filly out of the most amazing mare I have and probably will ever ride! soonergirl98 No, but I would do a culture and biopsy before paying a stud fee to make sure she is reproductively sound GLP My sister got two of her rodeo mares bred as a maidens at 18 and had no problems getting them bred. However, I believe it was live cover. The mares did fine and had easy pregnancies and deliveries. The babies were healthy. streakysox I would take her to a good repro vet have her examined during normal estrus, and again at ovulation. You may have to use some HCG or possibly regumate. Its always a gamble. Yes those first foals are always smaller. Mine was the first foal of a mare that was about 14-2 and he turned out to only be 16-1. No telling how tall he would have been if he hadn’t been the first foal runninroan I have a mare that had her first foal at 16. She’s now in foal with her 3rd baby. Both her 2014 baby and 2015 baby were nice sized foals. My friend had a maiden mare, same age as mine. She tried to AI her 3 times with no luck, she tried again the next spring, once again no luck. She finally pasture bred her and she caught and had a filly the next spring. My mare was pasture bred all 3 times. Ran with other mares and a stud and caught on her first heat cycle with him. Caught easily the next 2 times as well. I realize that most stal-
lion and mare owners don’t do this much anymore(pasture breed). I totally understand why, can’t take the risk of hurting the stud or the mare. I went that route because I was very familiar with that stud and the band of mare he ran with. It’s not for everyone and it’s better to be safe than sorry and not risk the chance of them getting hurt! Not that you were even considering pasture breeding anyway. Just wanted to share my experience with my maiden mare. Good luck with your mare! Runninbay It bothers me when people say mare’s first foal is going to be small. Thats complete BS. To the OP, I bred my maiden mare at 15, she had the filly at 16 and it was all very textbook. Go for it! ThreeCorners Many first foals ARE smaller at birth. However, by weaning they are just as big as any other foals and will grow as big as genetically designed and if fed properly. We bred a older maiden mare. We only got 2 foals from her. Her first colt was smaller at birth, however he is 15.3 as an adult and his mother is just a tick under 15 hands so he’s alot bigger then her. So if anyone trys to say they are smaller, well yes but only at birth, One of mother nature’s devine designs to help ease the first foaling. wishes4kissez Oh geez my maiden mare had a giant foal the first time born big and measures like she will be 16H at maturity. She’s due with her second by the same stud in about 10 weeks I wonder how big this one will be if the first is always smaller!! punkypower My mare was 22, bred the second day if not the first day of her cycle. No probelms. Baby was smaller and still is smaller as a 4 year old. I did have to wean her at 16 weeks and then had to put my mare down several months later, not sure if it was related to pre-
gancy/birthing/nursing or not. RunfastNTurn Sooo.. how old is considered to old for a non maiden mare? Whiteboy Lots of people say there is a higher chance of complications/problems after the age of 10. Obviously the older they are the higher the risk. quikchik I bred my maiden mare at 18. I had a repro exam done and the vet said everything looked good. When she looked like she was coming in, I took her to the vet for a check, he said it was perfect timing, ordered the semen, and she took that first time. I think he gave her some sort of shot at that time, but I didn’t have to do anything. She had a big filly with no trouble, just laid down in the pasture and had her. The filly is about the same height as her dam right now coming 3, which is small. I wasn’t expecting 16+ out of 14.1 & 14.3, so I’m happy with her. My mare hasn’t been as good since she came back though. Not sure if it is related or not, but she doesn’t quite fire like she used to, and there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with her physically. She is a great mom, and I love my filly, so I would do it again though. kickincowgirl I had a 21 year old maiden last year... I was super nervous about it.. But I talked to my vet, he examined her and said he didn’t see why not. Had no issues getting her bred. Mare carried full term and had no problems with delivery. She had a tiny, nothing but legs filly in May. I had to help her up and nurse the first time but after that, no issues.. She was and is still full of spunk! Now she’s 8 months old, & built like a tank! both are very healthy.

Hay Options - Quality is the Deciding Factor Reprint from January 2013
Š Jarihin | Dreamstime.com
Article By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM
This month Dr. Fisch answers a question from one of our readers.
Doc,
I have some questions about hay. First of all I have heard horses can get diseases from wild animals defecating in the hay. Is that true? Second, since there is supposed to be another shortage of hay, what is the best kind of hay to feed and how can I get the most bang for my buck? Yes your horses can get diseases from animals such as opossums defecating in the hay, feed, or just on the grass. They can be carriers of an organism called sarcocystis neurona which causes EPM or Equine Protozoal Myelitis. EPM is a neurological disease that can cause symptoms anywhere from periodic stumbling to complete inability to walk. So one way to prevent this disease is to keep opossums out of your feed and hay supply. The best kind of hay to feed is excellent quality hay, meaning excellent quality Coastal Bermuda grass hay is better than medium or poor quality alfalfa hay. Hay should be dust free, dry and smell good and fresh. You can get your hay analyzed by the Department of Agriculture or the local ag extension office. This is more important to have done depending on what class of horses you are feeding. Proper protein, calcium and phosphorous levels are very important in growing, lactating and pregnant horses. It is also important to a slightly lesser degree in performance horses. Horses hanging out in a pasture or Page 28
who go for an occasional weekend ride have more latitude with their nutritional requirements. When deciding what hay to buy, always let quality be the deciding factor. You may be able to buy lower quality hay for less money but you will need to feed more of it and it usually causes digestive or respiratory problems somewhere down the line. So in the end you probably pay more for the lower quality hay. Your horses’ diet should be based on the forage with grain as a supplement and not the other way around. If forage is the basis of the diet, it needs to be excellent quality for maximum health and performance. Recurrent airway obstruction, otherwise known as heaves, chronic obstructive lung disease, chronic airway disease, etc. is a common respiratory disease which shows signs of bronchospasm, mucous production and an accumulation of cells called neutrophils which indicate infection or inflammation and it is many times caused by feeding dusty or moldy hay. The main indicator of this disease is a recurrent cough. This cough may express itself as anything from a one or two coughs as the horse starts working to a horse that spends most of the day coughing. The more extreme cases exhibit respiratory difficulty. The majority of RAO cases are the result of hypersensitivity in the lungs to inhaled allergens. The most common antigens are dust and molds. Periodic bronchoconstriction will cause an accumulation of mucus and neutrophils. Most of these cases are in horses kept in barns. There is a
expense and are probably less valuable than history, physical exam and a BAL.
similar condition in the southern part of the United States that is called summer pasture associated obstructive disease. The condition in these horses usually improves when the horse is stabled because it is usually caused by certain grasses and their seed heads. Besides a chronic cough of varying degrees, other signs include nasal discharge and labored expiration of air. Horses with severe cases will have “heave lines”. The heave lines are actually hypertrophied abdominal muscles which assist in pushing air out of the lungs. The reason the lungs need assistance in getting the air out of the lungs versus into the lungs such as in cases of pneumonia, is that the bronchioles are swollen to such an extent that the air is trapped in the bronchioles and alveoli where the exchange of oxygen takes place. The more advanced cases will exhibit flared nostrils and increased respiratory rates. When the lungs are listened to the veterinarian will hear expiratory wheezes in the lungs and there may be a rattle in the trachea from excess mucous. Some horses end up spending so much energy breathing that they actually loose weight. Blood work will many times be normal unless there is a secondary bacterial infection. If the case has been fairly long standing, there will many times be a secondary bacterial infection and that infection will need to be treated with the appropriate antibiotics. The diagnosis is many times based on clinical signs and history of the horse. The most accurate way to diagnose RAO is with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). Certain cells such as neutrophils and eosinophils in the BAL are indicators of RAO. A BAL is fairly easy to perform. A special tube is inserted into the lungs and 60 to 200 mls of sterile lactated ringers is infused into the lungs. When the horse coughs the fluid back up it is collected in the same tube and evaluated microscopically. This fluid can be cultured but the better way to culture the lungs is with a transtracheal wash (TTW). A TTW is a little more invasive than a BAL because it requires that a small incision be made into the trachea. However the fluid that is obtained is more accurate for culture for infection as it doesn’t pass through the nose but comes straight from the trachea. It is performed with a small amount of sterile fluid being infused into the lungs and collecting what the horse coughs up similar to the BAL. The fluid is cultured and the horse is treated with the appropriate antibiotics. Other ways to add to the diagnostic data are thoracic radiographs and ultrasound. However these diagnostic modalities greatly add to the We would like to help you get your horse health questions answered by a knowledgeable equine veterinarian. The most important treatment by far for RAO is to manage the environment. Many horses will respond very favorably to merely decreasing the amount of mold and dust in the environment. Make sure the shavings are clean and dust free. Round bales can be major culprits in creating RAO horses. Round bales that get any amount of mold in them at all require the horse to put his head directly into the mold and dust and breathe them into his lungs. Hay should be free of dust and if need be the hay should be watered down before feeding. Grain should also be dust free and soaked if needed. Pastures should be kept mowed and as free of weeds and grass that is seeding out as possible. There are a few treatments for RAO including acupuncture, systemic corticosteroids, clenbuterol, and some aerosolized corticosteroids have been used successfully to treat RAO. It is important to remember that even with drug therapy if the environment is not treated and the causative agent not removed, then it will be difficult to treat many cases of RAO. Systemic corticosteroids have the negative side affect of suppressing the immune system and being a possible cause of laminitis. Clenbuterol is expensive and can cause high heart rates and sweating when given at high doses. It is a good bronchodilator however and does not have laminitis causing properties. The aerosol corticosteroids work well in many cases but they require treatment every 4 to 12hours. They are normally effective in mild to moderate cases of RAO and can be used along with systemic therapy in more severe cases. Due to the low bioavailability the aerosolized corticosteroid have less potential for adrenal gland suppression. There are different types of aerosolized corticosteroids so it is good to discuss these with your equine veterinarian and decide which one will work best in your situation. There will usually be a response with most of these treatments within 24 hours but all treatments should be based on an accurate diagnosis and examination by your equine veterinarian. As always an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Always keep your barn, feed and hay as dust and mold free as possible. Early and accurate diagnosis is always better than a delayed diagnosis and treatment. If RAO has gone on in the lungs for some time, the damage and fibrosis in the lungs may be irreversible. RAO is like a snowball. The longer it goes untreated the worse it gets and the more irreversible it becomes. Whenever you have the first inkling that your horse has a respiratory problem, always get it checked out by your equine veterinarian. The initial stages of RAO can prevent a horse from performing to his maximum ability. The advanced stages may prevent him from living. I’ll bet you never thought that the hay you choose to feed your horses could have such positive or negative consequences. Life is all about choices. Make sure you make the right ones. Like most other decisions, taking the time to choose quality over other factors will be healthier for your horses and more cost effective for you.

The holiday excitement is starting to fade, the decorations and lights have all been taken down and put away for next December. New Year Resolutions are in place and hopefully being followed with enthusiasm and direction. Some of us use this time to clean our tack and replace the worn items on saddles, bridles, all equipment in general. Some of us use this time to start a new horse or tune up a seasoned horse going back to basics and slow work. Some of us use this time to pull the shoes and turn our ponies out for some R&R.
COWBOY MOUNTED SHOOTING
1st Ohio members take this time to get our shoots for the up coming season booked at the arena. We strive to make any changes needed to insure that our shoots are a first class, quality, fun and a safe experience for all of our shooters. New ideas are discussed and tweeked for added excitement for every shoot weekend. Our first shoot of the summer is Memorial Weekend and we start that off with a Buckle Shoot, all 24 classes win a buckle. We are also planning a Team event and possibly a Boarder War shoot with a club in a near by state. There was mention of a Clean up Shoot and something about a Jimmy Buffet shoot! Our Charity Shoot is always on the first weekend of October and the planning committee for that shoot is already working on new ideas. Details for all our shoots will be finalized and posted on our website at 1stohio.com and posted on the Cowboy Mounted Shooting website at cmsaevents.com, The 1st Ohio Year End Banquet for 2015 is currently the big planning topic. February News
A nice hot bowl of chili sure sounds good for dinner on this chili day! One of the chilliest days of the season today and some snow to boot! I know I shouldn’t complain about the weather, this winter has been warm and so comfortable until today. I guess because I have not had to deal with the cold, wind and snow that it just seems so much colder, windier and more snowy than it actually is. After all, IT IS JANUARY/ FEBRUARY its supposed to be cold and snowy! My ponies are out and enjoying playing in the snow, well that is all but one...he thinks he should be in a heated barn with special pampering! We have some members that are in need of extra special prayers. If you recall, Dan App had some shoulder surgery this fall. His shoulder is still not quite past that 75% yet so lets get him to 100% quickly so he is really for the Spring shoots. His Cowgirl, Connie had some surgery on her knee a short time ago, from what I understand, some cleaning up of the joint. If I know Connie, she is already jumping up & down, stretching, kicking and almost ready to give the cowgirl shooters a run
CMSA News for their money this spring. Bobby Ruwe had a total knee replacement on December 21st. Now those of you that know Bobby very well, know that he is having a hard time not doing too much-cause he can’t sit still for 5 minutes! We “all” will be glad to see these shooters get back in the saddle as soon as possible, after all, its hard for a good Cowboy/girl not to be riding that special pony. There is a new club in Kentucky, they are the CMSA Kentucky Sharp Shooters. They had a practice shoot at Circle Bar C indoor arena at LaGrange in January. Bobby, Ian & I drove down to meet some of the members and invite them to the 1st Ohio Shoots. Some of the Ky Cowtown Rangers also came to practice. The sharp shooters will be hosting their first match on February 13th at the Circle Bar C and another practice there March 5th. The Sharp Shooters will be hosting their summer practices and matches at the Bullitt County Fairgrounds, around Sheperdsville, Kentucky. You can check the details on the CMSA events web site. The members we met all are very excited to get started and are looking forward to hosting and traveling to Mid West Region Shoots. It was great visiting with everyone, we wish the Ky Sharp Shooters a successful season with growth and fun in the CMSA’s Midwest Region! If you haven’t sent your membership for 1st Ohio yet this year... what are you waiting for? We plan to have nothing but FUN in 2016! Special new challenges with some new themes for
our shoots. We are looking forward to a positive, productive year with our family of members and extending an invitation to new shooters interested in Cowboy Mounted Shooting. We will be shooting in Williamstown, Kentucky at the Cowtown Arena on April 30th, and May 1st. Mark the dates on your calendar, come and join us! We should have some interesting photos from the 1st Ohio’s Year End Banquet for the next issue of The Horse Resource! One of my New Year resolutions is to take more pictures at our events to give everyone a chance to see how much FUN we have when we are all together. Sooo...with that said, don’t procrastinate any longer. Make the contact, call up your “I want to be a COWBOY attitude, load up Ole’Buck and come to the event. Clint Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

2016 Goal Setting
Photos provided by IJRA or as noted
by Tim McGraw. This song rings in my ears every time my goals come to mind, or I’m practicing. I guess it means that if I want it all, I’ll have to lay it all out on the line. I have set multiple goals for this year. My 2015/2016 IJRA goals are to be all-around champion, champion heeler, champion breakaway roper, champion goat tyer, champion barrel racer, at least reserve in ribbon roping, and at least reserve in pole bending. I work toward these goals by riding every chance I get, roping the dummy, tying goats, and running so that I can accomplish my goals. My 2015/2016 CINCH goals are to be the CINCH All-Around Champion, champion heeler, champion barrel racer, and champion breakaway roper. I want to qualify for the NJHFR in all of my events: barrels, team roping, breakaway, ribbon roping, poles, and goat tying. At nationals, I want to be at least the reserve all-around champion, and have the best time ever. These goals have helped me practice more, and I can’t wait for rodeo season to start back up. ~Sage
When I started IJRA, I never set goals. I practiced and hoped for the best. In the 2014-2015 CINCH season, I qualified for the NJHFR in Des Moines, Iowa. Until the moment where I had been told I qualified, I had never set a goal. Once I realized that I had two months to prepare, I started worrying. I didn’t know what I had to do to do well at nationals. I was qualified, so that was all that mattered, right? I was completely wrong. As the finals date edged nearer, I had the craziest idea. Why not set a goal to work toward? I set mental goals to go out to nationals and have clean barrel runs, get a times in ribbon roping, and catch in team roping. As a sixth grader, the thought of nationals was terrifying. Every day, I was out in the barn riding my barrel and team roping horse, and running. I had the itch to do well, and nothing could calm it. As I counted down the days, I worked harder than I ever had before. I pushed myself, in hope that my hard work would pay off. As I backed Diamond in to the heeling box, I realized how much goals mattered. I told myself that I worked to get here, and gave it my all. I ended up catching in the team roping, and that made me feel 110% better. I knew that I could do it, but I needed something to push me. I needed a goal to work towards. The rest of the week went okay. It wasn’t great, but I hadn’t set my goals early enough. I got three out of six times all week. No, I wasn’t thrilled, but I just set a goal to do better. Rodeo has taught me something. That there is a difference between a goal and a wish or a dream. Once you set a goal, you don’t forget it. You know your goals like the back of your hand. They’re always there in the back of your mind, pushing you to become better. My goals are on my mind 24/7. I think about them at school, in the truck, and while I’m riding and practicing. There’s a song called “How Bad Do You Want It?”
Page 34
This year for IJRA have 4 goals that I want to accomplish. One is I want to be faster in goats and tie in 15’s. Another goal of mine is to catch most of my calves and steers which will take a lot of practice. I also want to run a poles and place 1st or 2nd and maybe win 1st 2nd or 3rd in barrels. The goal that I have wanted to win since I was about 5 is to win the all-around in my age group. This one isn’t really a goal but some year I would really want my back number to be 49 because that is my lucky number and I might give me luck to do my goals. ~Drew

Improve my times in barrels and poles only new horse Ruger! Faster goat tying times and better dismounts... To catch as many breakaway calves as possible!!! After losing my big beautiful mare “Shady” just before Christmas last year, I didn’t know what to do... She and I had just started working well together after about 10 months of working together. I used several other horses to get through the rest of the rodeo season and finally in July of this past year, we found another horse for me! A horse that had been close by all along! Ruger my 5 year old buckskin came from my future sister-in -law and had been trained by my Mom as a 2-3 year old and my oldest brother for heeling as a 4 year old! I got to ride him for the first time at a big barrel show only in the warm up arena but I loved him right away!!
My number one goal for 2016 is to make the short go at the Junior High National Finals in pole bending. The last 2 years I was just 6 holes out from making it!! I would also like to exceed in my other events as well. I have a new roping horse and also started heeling this year. It would be nice for me & Lizzy to really start clicking together in our roping events!! I really want to get an 8 second goat tie this year too!! Over all, I would just like to have a successful year as I close out my last year in IJRA and Junior High. ~Maci
After that Mom convinced Hannah to sell him to us and she finally said yes!! We are working on poles now with him and he seems to like everything he does! I can’t wait to see what this next rodeo season to see how much we improve!! ~Lillian

Princess Spotlight

Secondly, as the IJRA Princess, I want to put on clinics during the rodeo season. I can remember that we had a clinic at C Bar C on our one day rodeo. On our clinic day, we had people help with the goat clinic and the barrel/pole clinic. It makes me feel so good to help others become a better competitor in their favorite events. Thirdly, I want to find more sponsors for IJRA. I would like more people to sponsor IJRA so that other kid can have as much fun as I have in this association. Our sponsorship money goes to year-end awards and gives kids the opportunity to rodeo at different places. The reason I want to find sponsorship money is so that this association can stay alive for years to come. This association has taught me so many things. Being the IJRA Princess has taught me to be responsible. I’m now the one in charge of finding people to carry flags, organizing the grand entry, keeping track of flags and flag holders, finding songs for grand entry, and making sure that everyone who wants to join in, can. Before I became princess, I thought it looked easy. It really isn’t. Being the princess has caused me to learn responsibility by making sure I get everything done. Being a member in rodeo taught me to be responsible, too. I had to brush, feed, saddle, and take care of my horses. That taught me responsibility. But being the rodeo princess has given me tasks only I can do, and I can’t have help. My parents have always helped me with my horses, but when I became the princess, princess tasks were all up to me. This was something I had to do myself, and being responsible helped with that. My responsibility has gone to a whole new level.

This is my 8th year as a member, and let me tell you, it’s been quite the experience. I’ve made tons of friends, and they’re all a big part of why I am the competitor I am today. IJRA isn’t just about rodeoing. It’s about building friendships, becoming better competitors, learning to be responsible, and having fun. Don’t forget to find sponsors so we can keep this association going! -2015/2016 IJRA Princess Sage Thomas
First, as the IJRA Princess, I want to help kids get involved. When I was younger, my favorite part of rodeo was the grand entry. It’s all I wanted to do. Now that I am the princess, I want to help other kids get the opportunity to carry flags in the grand entry. To do this, I go around during our break and ask kids if they want to be in the grand entry. This way I can give kids an opportunity to come find me and let me know they want to carry a flag so that I can have one. This is one of my favorite parts of being the princess because all of the K12ers get the biggest smiles on their faces.

Hi. My name is Sage Thomas and I am the 2015-2016 IJRA Princess. I’m 13 years old and this is my 8th year as a member in IJRA. My favorite event is team roping. I have always looked up to the IJRA Princesses, and now it’s finally my turn. As the princess, there are three main things I want to focus on this year. 1. Getting more kids involved. 2. Putting on clinics during the year. And 3. Getting sponsors.

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

What Mountain Are You Going Around? Have you ever ridden a horse that seemed to need a refresher course about the same issue over and over again? Maybe they tend to get a little “pushy” on the bit, maybe they tend to want to drop their shoulder while doing slow work or maybe they are insecure and need your help over and over again to reassure them of themselves and their job and of their talent. I have a gelding now that is very insecure. Though you’d never guess it by watching him with other horses. He is quite a bully when it comes to socializing and he has no issues being confident without a rider. It has taken me quite some time to get him to be bold in his movements while I am in the saddle. I have had to work on the same things over and over at different times to allow him to be confident in what his job is with me on his back. He used to be very “ratey” and would tend to run scared. He seemed to be scared of the bit, scared of me or scared of whatever else he could find. I’m not a good match to a “ratey” horse, I like my horses to run more free, but still allow me to help them a little in the turns. This horse was intimidated to run hard into a barrel, although sometimes when he would run “scared,” it was then hard to get his attention and have him relax in the turn to work to his potential.
INSPIRATION
I’m not sure if this is making sense or not, but the point I am trying to make is that I found myself taking this horse back to the training pen and “around the same mountain” over and over. Just when I’d think he’s got it, he’d prove me wrong and back around we’d go. What it finally took for me to get through to him was to get him to realize that he could trust me to guide him. He had to learn that I wasn’t going to jerk on his face or whip him for results. I knew where he was supposed to be and I knew what path he needed to take to get there. We had to build a relationship... and going around and around that mountain together is what it finally took for him to follow my lead and stop the madness. He realized I was willing to go on the journey with him and that if he put his trust in me we would avoid the mountain the next time. You see where I am going with this, right? The story with the horse might very well be true, but what I am trying to get at is this: If you find yourself going around and around the same mountain...climbing the same hill.... fighting the same battle - however you want to put it - over and over again...there is a
Page 38
reason. God is trying to show you something! He’s taking you back to the same place in the training pen and there is a reason.
that I make it safely to the other side. He has never let me down. BUT, if I were a horse I’d be spending a lot of time in the training pen.
God wants to show you that you can do it. He wants to show you the right way to do it. He wants you to know that he is there with you on your journey. He knows where you need to be, He knows the path that will get you there. You just have to be WILLING to let him guide you.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around the lesson of my particular mountain. Maybe I need to get familiar enough with the territory to avoid the panic at the beginning. Maybe I just need to remember that God is ALWAYS with me. Maybe my pride gets me back at the same point in the path each time. Maybe I depend too much on my own skill and then panic. Maybe this will be the last time around.
No two horses are alike. No two horses take the exact same path of training. No two people walk the same path to finding their purpose. I do guarantee you that most of us have to go around a mountain more than once in our lifetime. There is one mountain that I have been around so many times that I have a path worn. The crazy part is each time I start around this mountain, I have the same reaction. I get scared and I panic. I feel lost and alone. It has happened so many times that the path is familiar, which makes it even crazier that it scares me. On each trip before, I have finally realized that God is right there with me an just like the number of times before, God will make sure
Just like my horse probably wondered why we kept working on the same things over and over, but did his best to go where I was guiding him, I’ll keep trying to go where God is guiding me and wondering when we’ll take the final lap around this mountain. In the meantime, if you are making another lap around your mountain, allow God to take you to the training pen and be a good learner so you can move on to the next. And please keep me in your prayers as I make my way around my own mountain again, (hopefully for the last time!) Happy Trails & God Bless! Love in Christ, Christa

BUNKHOUSE DOOR Sittin` in the bunkhouse About to hit the hay All were bone tired It had been a long hot day
Now boy’s dad sent me He says y’all are the best But even good cowboys Need a day of rest
One last thing boys I’m going stand guard I broke down the bunkhouse door I must have hit it a bit too hard
It weren’t just this day But all the days before That’s when he come bustin` in Through the bunkhouse door
When you’re run down And workin` every day Well boy’s You forget to kneel and pray
So in the morning` I’ll be the bunkhouse door You’ll have to go through me To see what my dad has in store
Pete jumped to his feet Went for his gun Then he noticed It was the ranch owner’s son
Dad said for you boy’s To sleep in late As for the branding Well….. it can wait
John 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
He said holster that hog-leg Sorry for bustin` through the door I’m here with good news Not to start some bunkhouse war
Dad said in the mornin` To come to his place on the hill Cookie will prepare a feast Not some campfire meal

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

Falling in Love with God I
’ve never been Catholic, so a confessional booth is completely foreign to me. Someone sitting on the other side of a screen listening to my sins makes the Baptist kid in me squirm in the pew.
I have my own means of confession – the keyboard. My contrition passes through my fingertips and through an invisible screen called cyberspace out to satellites rotating around the earth and back to anyone interested in reading. So, welcome to my confessional. I love Dee Dee. I love being in love with her. One look, one smile, one touch can move me. My dogs drive me crazy, but I see them as friends, more than pets. Underneath this somewhat rough exterior, I am a softy. I cry at commercials and inspirational movies. I still get choked up when Old Yeller dies or Rudy makes the tackle in the last game for Notre Dame. I sniffle when the right song comes on the radio. I’m a hopeless romantic, who still holds onto the “fairy tale.” So, why do I bristle when I hear someone say they are deeply in love with Jesus or God? Shouldn’t I smile at them, as if they just told me they love Tom or Mary? Isn’t falling in love with my Creator not only a goal, but a priority? Would it not make sense that longing for time with God felt as normal as missing my wife? I am not ashamed to cry in a theatre. I do not feel embarrassed to write passionately. How can I want to please Dee Dee, but not be as passionate about pleasing God? Why do I label someone in love with Jesus as a “Jesus Freak,” but think a couple walking hand in hand is a beautiful picture of what we want?

Dee Dee is an incredible woman. My mother was a godly, wonderfully good-spirited woman. My dogs are great companions. Most of the time, they are more important than my own needs. The question is - Why would I not work harder for a perfect God, who chose to love me?

Looking — A Soul’s Journey
In human relationships, choices demonstrate our love. It shows importance. I want to tell my wife, through my actions, “I love you!” I cannot love her as I want to be loved. If I truly love her, I must love her, as she wants to be loved.

I only have one answer – my human, selfish nature! I love what I can see. I crave what I can touch. I want what I can feel. God provides none of those to my flesh. I limit my own ability to love Him by my own humanity. I get human touch, response and love from people. As imperfect as they may be, I work harder to get what I want. There it is, again – the selfish factor. And I wonder why I sin so often, really?

My BFFs - I Have Freckles and Maybelline I don’t really have freckles in the sense of pigmented spots on my face and I don’t wear make-up. Come on, I’m a dog! I mean I have a couple of BFFs (that stands for “Best Friends Forever”) named Freckles and Maybelline. You all know Freckles, the loyal friend who was with Duke until the end. She has been around here for a while, so if you’ve read much of what I’ve written, you’ve read about Freckles. I was going to enlighten you all on how she got her name, but I thought a picture would do the job.
There you have it. She is the one with freckles. How clever is that name? (And how clever an I?) Miss Maybelline, you should know is the spotted (people say piebald) dachshund (wiener dog) that lives here with us. She has a makeshift heart on her side and she likes to think she named herself. The people tried to get her to answer to several different names, but she didn’t like the names, so she ignored the people. They finally came
up with Maybelline and she thought it was unique enough to fit her, so she reacted and the name stuck. She has the biggest ears....well, I’ll just share a pic of her too so you get the full effect. Anyway, we’ve all been spending a lot of time inside “hibernating” since it got really cold outside. We mostly hang out in the house keeping the lady company. Life’s pretty good around here. I’m using the slow time to catch up on my reading and watching some NetFlix. I’ve got Freckles hooked on Grey’s Anatomy.

I Was Just Thinking Back...... Excerpt from Barks N Bits, 2010
For those of you who have been keeping up with my dilemma, you can appreciate my fondness for the past. You have surely figured out by now that it was one year ago that “Princess Annabelle” and all her “precious cuteness” moved in.
This month I found myself thinking back about the “Good Old Days.” I can remember getting to sleep...... and sleep. Anytime I wanted to take a nap, I took a nap. Those really were the “Good Old Days.” It seems like that was forever ago. When actually it was just a year ago (seven in dog years.) A year ago, life as I knew it changed. -It was the beginning of the end.
Now my memories are filled with sleepless days and horse-show nightmares. I found proof of the torture that the little black bark-box puts me though.
Once you see these, you should be able to relate even better to my situation. Whose idea was it to get a weiner-dog anyway? Until next month, I’ll be longing for the “Good Old Days,”

Color the Valenti Happy Valentine’s Day!
Get the Facts! • Almost 150 million cards are given each Valentine’s Day. • Over 40,000 Americans work at chocolate companies. • Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. • In the 1840s, Esther Howland started selling the first massproduced valentines in America. • The story of Cupid’s life is one of myth and legend dating back to ancient Greece and Rome. His role in history continues today as the mascot of Saint Valentine’s Day.
Just Joking! Q: What do you call two birds in love? A: Tweethearts! Q: Do skunks celebrate Valentine’s Day? A: Sure, they’re very scent-imental! Q: What did the bat say to his girlfriend?
