LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor
I
t’s Hoosier Horse Fair & Expo time again! My calendar is starting to fill with horse related activities and I love it! This time of year is always exciting and fun. There are plenty of shows listed in our Calendar of Events both in print and on-line...take a look!
Things are starting to turn green and the hay field is starting to grow again. It’s time to go through and clean up the tack and brush the winter hair off of those ponies. (Don’t we all love that?) All of our horses have been working part-time lately. Hopefully they will be happy to get back to their full-time jobs. This month we’ve included photo coverage from the 2016 Breeders’ Cup and it was well worth the wait. Steve has once again done a wonderful job of catching the excitement in photos. We hope you enjoy it! Until next month.......clean that tack, brush and curry those horses, get that horse hair out of your mouth.......and most importantly, don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

Always check with your vet before starting any treatment. scwebster I dont have experience with this condition. I know some people manage it in their performance horses just fine. Is this a genetic defect that is passed down? If a mare has it does this eliminate her from being a brood mare canidate? streakysox Yes, it is genetic and yes it would eliminate a mare as a candidate for a broodmare. GLP My vet told me it could be genetic or it could be from injury. I had a BA75 gelding with a club foot on the right and an old, big scar on the left, the vet said he thought the club foot was a result of the left foot’s cut. This horse was a late 2 yr. old when My dad bought him at the BFA sale way back in the mid ‘80’s. Opinions may have changed since then. stayceem Yes, club foot can be genetic or injury. I have seen a few injury related or some due to growing to rapidly.
ridejg I have read it can be genetic or from injury, even a difficult birth can be a reason. jewishprincess There is no evidence of HOW it occurs or WHY it occurs. I would not breed livestock with it, just as a rule of thumb but with that being said. My old man has had one since I bought him as a 3 year old. We trim it naturally, don’t try to correct it, and he’s never taken a lame step. Doesn’t impair his ability. It’s a cosmetic blemish as far as I’m concerned. I’d take one with a club foot over a bleeder or cibber ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. streakysox There is a lady who lives near me. She has a mare with a club foot and everyone of her babies has had a club foot also, no matter who the mare was bred to. Murphy RE: streakysox Except for when it’s from an injury, incorrect farrier work, etc., .... so not always genetic.
streakysox RE: Murphy I just don’t remember saying that it could not be from an injury. This was obviously not from an injury and I was just trying to answer a question. Actually I am rather surprised that someone read my post. Murphy RE: streakysox How is it obviously not from an injury? The OP doesn’t really even have info, just asking if it’s genetic or not. Chandler’s Mom A breeder told me he sees it sometimes as a result of growing too fast. Something like the bones grow so quickly that the tendons/ligs don’t stretch fast enough, which causes the hoof to wear that way. Trimming when they’re young can. correct it but trying to correct when they’re older is a bad idea.
go to sale as long yearlings and have perfect feet. I kept the club footed gelding. His xrays show a “normal” foot inside. JRJ Years ago I owned one and it was genetic..I went to several different vets, fed great products and even traveled over 2 hours one way to a farrier..I want to say there’s different degrees of it. Mine was really bad and he had to stay stall bound for a very long time to get some growth. I’ve seen some horses that are super minor and you can barely even notice it. I wouldn’t breed anything with a club foot and I won’t own another one..Just me..Too many good solid/sound horses out there. Good luck! :-) Read More at www.barrelhorseworld.com
iloveequine40 We have a mare that’s foaled 7 babies. Her 2nd foal had a club foot and he’s the only one. They

The short go will begin anew; all qualified teams begin short go with zero points. Winners of short go will be determined using the same points system. Payback: 100% of the entry fees plus $2,000 added. 75% of the total purse will be split between the winning team. The remaining 25% will be paid out to the 3 fastest times of the finals paid 50%, 30%, 20%. Example: If there are 40 teams X 100 EF= $4,000 + $2,000 added = $6,000 purse. 75% is $4,500 split between winning team ($900 each) 25% is $1,500 paid to 3 fastest times. $750 to the fastest, $450 to second, $300 to third.

he Breeders’ Cup World Championships returned to beautiful Santa Anita Park on November 4th and 5th, 2016. Here is a photographic journey through the amazing weekend of racing highlighted by two epic showdowns: the undefeated Songbird versus champion Beholder in the Distaff and the 2014 Horse of the Year, all-time earnings leader and undefeated in 2016, California Chrome versus the unknown potential of Saratoga’s track record setting, Arrogate, in the Classic.

Former Breeders’ Cup Champ, Runhappy, broke poorly but accelerated to the lead with the talented Dortmund. Texas Chrome and Accelerate rounded out the top four until Gun Runner took third in the clubhouse turn. Runhappy stretched his lead on the backstretch while Dortmund and Gun Runner settled off the pace. Tamarkuz raced near the back of the pack until beginning his move, four-wide around the far turn. Runhappy faded and Gun Runner challenged Dortmund for the lead but Tamarkuz accelerated down the center of the track, passing Dortmund and Gun Runner to win going away by 3 1/2 lengths.
Lull, Roly Poly and Sweeping Paddy made the early lead while New Money Honey tucked in by the rail. Hydrangea sat inside of New Money Honey and moved into fourth around the first turn. Lull separated from the field around the clubhouse turn, opening a 3 1/2 length lead on the backstretch. Lull eventually tired and New Money took the lead from the outside, crossing the finish 1/2 length ahead of deep-closing, Coasted.

2016 Breeders’ Cup Opposite Page Top L to R: The undefeated three-year-old, Songbird, walks on the track prior to the Distaff; Beholder makes her way to the starting gate for the last time in his storied career. DISTAFF- The centerpiece of Breeders’ Cup Friday featured a Distaff matchup between multiple Breeders’ Cup and Eclipse Award winner, Beholder, against the undefeated and also previous Breeders’ Cup winner, Songbird. The race was the final of six-year-old Beholder’s Hall-of-Fame Career and first against the three-yearold Songbird. Some believed Beholder lost a step compared to her epic 2015 campaign and she subsequently went off as the third betting choice behind Songbird and Stellar Wind; the latter whom defeated Beholder twice earlier in the year. Songbird (post one) and Beholder (post eight) bookended the field in the gate. Both broke well and made for the lead while Stellar Wind was slow at the start and shuffled back. Songbird officially set the pace with I’m a Chatterbox in second and Beholder rating in third. Curlina moved ahead of Beholder around the turn, but the champion mare sat comfortably off the pace and in clear position. Stellar Wind fought back into fifth after her slow start. Beholder began to move past Curalina and Songbird maintained an easy pace on the lead, looking as if the race was hers to lose. Gary Stevens asked Beholder to quicken as the field entered the final turn. I’m a Chatterbox and Beholder shortened Songbird’s lead but the former couldn’t sustain her run. Songbird and Beholder entered the stretch, engaged in battle. Songbird held her lead by a nose with less than a furlong to go. Beholder refused to quit, inching even closer until she was a whisker ahead of her valiant counterpart at the end. The race was immediately considered one of the best moment of the 2016 racing season and served as a rare example of an outcome exceeding it’s lofty expectations. Stellar Wind finished fourth behind Forever Unbridled. This Page Top: Gary Stevens acknowledges the cheers for Beholder from the Santa Anita crowd This Page Bottom:Despite finishing second, Mike Smith is all smiles and proud of his Songbird after a historic race in the Distaff

Above: Noted and Quoted sped to the early lead with Champagne Room racing second on her outside. The two maintained position as Noted and Quoted slowed the pace down the backstretch. American Gal glided into third after starting near the back. Champagne Room veered wide on the final turn, spinning to lead. Noted and Quoted tired and Champagne Room extended the lead while Valadorna put in a late run and passed American Gal in second. Champagne Room fought off Valadorna’s change and hit the board in first at odds of 30-1.
Above: Catch a Glimpse and Avenge led the field from the gate. Avenge eventually settled alone on the lead, galloping quick fractions over the firm Santa Anita turf. Avenge rounded the final turn while Catch a Glimpse drifted back. Former Breeders’ Cup Champion, Lady Eli, moved out and charged the leader. Lady Eli briefly grabbed the lead until a huge, late run by Queen’s Trust caught her on the wire.

L to R from Top: The Dirt Mile field leaving the gate; FILLY AND MARE SPRINT - The early lead was hotly contested with Gloryzapper emerging as the front runner. Paulassilverling and Finest City raced outside Gloryzapper as they flew down the backstretch and entered the turn. Finest City hung three-wide but remained glued to the pacesetter. Paulassilverling took the lead with Gloryzapper falling back. Finest City went with Paulassilverlining as defending champ, Wavell Avenue made a bid on the outside. Finest City surged to the lead and fought back the late run by Wavell Avenue, crossing the wire 3/4 lengths in front. MILE - What a View broke sharply on the inside with Midnight Storm in second on the outside. Miss Temple City raced third with Limato fourth, Photo Call fifth and defending champ, Tepin, in sixth. What a View blazed through the opening quarter, distancing herself from the field. What a View kept the torrid pace through 1/2 mile, leading into the final turn. Tourist moved on the rail and passed Tepin. Midnight Storm took the lead as they entered the stretch and Tourist continued to move on the rail. Tepin seemed to flounder and fall back until making a ferocious late run, picking off horses and looking to defend her title. ARROGATE
With twelve races complete, the $6,000,000 Classic remained with the anticipated matchup between California Chrome and upstart, Arrogate. Arrogate loaded last before the gates flew open and California Chrome zipped to the early lead. Arrogate also broke well, but chose to settle off the pace and to the outside of Chrome, Melatonin, Effinex and Frosted. California Chrome lead the field around the clubhouse turn with Melatonin sticking to his outside. Arrogate moved past Effinex and Frosted and into third, just two lengths behind Chrome. California Chrome was easy on the lead, with his race seemingly unfolding perfectly. He began to leave Melatonin while Arrogate held in third. Chrome accelerated the pace and continued increasing the gap with Melatonin. Arrogate dropped to the inside as they rounded the turn for home, easily passing the tiring Melatonin but remaining just over two lengths behind Chrome. Mike Smith pressed Arrogate as Victor Espinoza looked behind multiple times, appearing confident that Chrome had the race. He was wrong. Arrogate was relentless and by the time Espinoza realized it, the big roan horse was right on Chrome’s heals. The two superstars separated themselves by over ten lengths from the rest of the field. Chrome tried repeatedly to turn back Arrogate, but he couldn’t hold him off any longer. The now budding three-year-old Arrogate ran down the future Hall-of-Famer and 2014 Horse of the Year in the final yards, spoiling the storybook end to California Chrome’s previously undefeated season. Steve Heuertz Bio It started with a horse named Cowboy. Disregarded and discounted, this nine-year-old Red Dun Quarter Horse left his life as a ranch horse in South Dakota and ventured a new path into the life of Steve Heuertz in 2004. Shortly thereafter, a bond was formed that fully catapulted Steve into the world of the horse where he became fascinated with the wonderful capabilities of this majestic animal. Of particular interest were the speed, endurance and competitive spirit demonstrated by the equine heroes within the sport of Thoroughbred Racing. Although initially satisfied with observing from afar, Steve became increasingly captivated by the sport and turned toward capturing the splendor of racing via his other passion, photography. The result was a recipe where he could combine his great love for horses, racing and photography into one harmonious blend that was greater than the sum of its parts. Since then, racing has taken Steve across the country to such wonderful places as Saratoga Race Course, Churchill Downs, Santa Anita Park, Pimlico Race Course, Belmont Park, Keeneland and Hooiser Park. During these travels, Steve has been fortunate to witness and photograph equally wonderful races such as the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes (racing’s famed Triple Crown) as well as the Travers Stakes, Santa Anita Derby, Indiana Derby, Stephen Foster Handicap and Breeders’ Cup, among others. However, residing in the Chicago suburb of St. Charles, IL, Steve regu-
larly frequents Arlington Park and Hawthorne Race Course where he has enjoyed capturing magnificent races like the Arlington Million and Hawthorne Gold Cup. Today, Steve’s passion for horses, racing and photography is like a fire that continues to be Steve Heuertz; stoked. While either behind Steve’s horse and the lens capturing the thrill of loyal friend, Cowboy, a Grade 1 race or in the sada 21-year-old, Red dle loping around a field with Dun Quarter Horse Cowboy, Steve as learned to operate under the simple truth that the more he is able to involve the horse in his life, the happier his days become.

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION
By Christa Conway
Are We There Yet? I can’t tell you how many times I pestered my dad with those words when I was a child, or how many times my own children have asked me that question. If you’ve ever travelled any significant distance with children in the back seat, you’ve probably heard those words more than once. My kids still ask ME and they are teenagers with smart phones that can tell them exactly where we are and how far the destination is away. I often reassure them and then tell them to follow along on their phone in Maps. (I used to do this with our oldest on the old fashioned Atlas...lol!) There must be something about hearing the words from me, their mother, that gives them comfort and reassurance that we are in fact going to get where we are heading. They could look it up on their phones from the get go, they are smart kids and definitely know how to use those phones way better than I do, but for some reason they always seem to look to me (or their dad) first for the answer of the question, “Are we there yet?” I am guilty too of this need for reassurance that I’m going to get where I’m heading...although sometimes I take detours and stop along the way more than I should, I am headed on a path to a final destination. We all are. I often throw up my hands and ask God, “Are we there yet?” and “How much longer?” I’m not necessarily referring to the final destination, but maybe just wondering how much farther to the other side of a particular mountain we’ve been climbing.
Jonah 2:2 and he said, “I called out of my distress to the LORD, And He answered me I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice.
After crying out, I too have a reference in God’s word that I can go to for guidance. I even use my phone version quite often. But sometimes I just call out to Him directly and wait for an answer of peace from the Holy Spirit.
Psalm 50:15 Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me.”
Why not just go to the Bible and read it for myself right off the bat? Maybe the same reason my kids ask me first instead of their phones... comfort and reassurance from my Father.
INSPIRATION
Jeremiah 33:3 ‘Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’
Please don’t misunderstand, we ought to reference scripture and confirm our path through God’s word, most assuredly. Sometimes the conversation with Him is so much more of what we need to get through a situation and we can go to scripture for more guidance. The Bible tells us in many places of examples of people calling out to Him and that we should call out to Him. Isaiah 65:24 “It will also come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear.
Page 46
Psalm 61:2 From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Romans 10:12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; for “whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” I’d say that last verse is the most important. If you have not called on the Lord to save you, it’s time. Don’t put it off any longer because soon we will all get to where we are going. I know where I’m going, do you? I just don’t know when I’ll get there yet. ;)
Happy Trails & God Bless! Love in Christ, Christa
On the Trail
By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church
THE RISING SON Pete stepped out of the saddle Knelt to watch the sun rise Looked at his pony Smoke Then he closed his eyes
When I see a mountain Or grass, green and knee high It reminds me you’re up there Watchin` from the sky
The coyotes singing Is a reminder too An enemy is out there Who was defeated by you
He was put on that cross Died and put in another’s grave But He is a rising Son And I’m no longer sins slave
Said Lord thanks for today And this western sky above There is beauty all around That shows your grace and love
If Smokes stumbles on a rock I think of the corner stone The rock of my foundation And thank Him for this roan
There are times I’ll see a snake Slithering in the sand I was once like him Before I came to The Brand
Yep Lord every morning` When the sun rises in the sky I’m thankful for your grace And your son that came to die
As I watch the herd Under the stars at night My heart is always thankful There will be the morning light
When I get off the trail Yep the narrow way A cactus will remind me There is a price to pay
But Lord every morning` When the sun rises in the sky I think of your only Son Who saved a sinner such as I

One Last (& Most Important) Thought… Read past issues of the Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!
Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for ALL of OUR sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day. He defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed - born again! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15
That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

LOOKING A Soul’s Journey
True North
- Reprint from 2012
Within all of us, there is a “compass” that directs our paths. It’s a sense of “true north”, which has been established by our morals, our values, our sense of “right and wrong”. It is “who we are”; “what we value”; and “what we truly cherish” that determine where we want “to go”. And those same things are the framework in which we make the decisions to get where we are going.
INSPIRATION
With my limited knowledge of physics and magnetic/electrical forces, I understand that a compass recognizes some constant force within the earth; and that, regardless of how lost we might be, the compass always points in the same direction – North. The same is true of our internal com-
We can wander aimlessly with no reference point, but “true north” is always, and will continue to always be “true north”.
pass. It is a constant force in our existence. How we use it and how we follow it is determined by the exercise of our own will; but it is “me” that changes, not the compass. No matter how lost I am on my journey, my internal “true north” remains constant. It’s always the same! Our ignoring the compass or our willful disregard for its power may change its influence on our life; but it does not change the direction in which it would point us, if given the chance. We can hide the compass in our pocket and never look at it. We can wander
aimlessly with no reference point, but “true north” is always, and will continue to always be “true north”. We can bury the compass in a drawer or in a box in the attic; but back there in dark corner of a drawer or box, it’s still pointing the same direction – North. The questions that must be answered begin with “What is our ‘true north’?” And then once the direction is determined; we must decide “Will I follow the compass that keeps me pointed toward my ‘true north’?”

BarksWaiting N Bits for that Rabbit
It’s that time of year again...time for the rabbit -- or “Easter Bunny.” as the people refer to him. I’ve been waiting for his return.
Last year he left me some goodies, so I am torn as to whether or not I should chase him out of the yard. And which rabbit...errrr, bunny, is this Easter Bunny? I’ve seen several rabbits hopping around the yard and hay field, but
I cannot remember the last day that we had without rain - as I am typing, the rain is still falling. Our pastures are all sopping wet and there is water standing everywhere around the ranch. The only good thing is that it has been a steady rain so far, no torrential downpours.... yet. I’m not sure what the weatherman has in store for us over the next few days....I just heard the word rain alot when the people had him on the TV. Hopefully I don’t float away before next month’s deadline comes around. As for the other indoor doggie around here
Bella
none have left me any baskets of goodies. How do I know which rabbits to chase and which ones to tell, “Thank you?” Such a dilemma....until next month, I’ll be waiting on the right rabbit and hoping he remembers my basket of yummies. Later>>>
Flashback with Bella From what I hear, the weather has been extreme in more places than where I live, but all I can testify to from first hand experience is that our weather has been wet, wet wet!!

Rain, Rain, GO AWAY!
Excerpt from Barks N Bits, Spring 2011
(aka “Princess Annabelle of Poo” - I kind of like that new nickname!!), she hasn’t been out much. She doesn’t do well when the ground is sopping wet. You see, her belly almost drags the ground and it just stays wet the whole time she is outdoors. Imagine people fingers after staying in the bathtub for too long and then you can imagine what her belly is like after too long in the wet grass. Yeah, I have to admit, I kind of feel for her...but don’t tell. Since the Princess has been spending most of her time on the couch and the neighbor dog, Duke, hasn’t crossed the muddy field to visit, I have got to spend a little more time with the outside dogs that live here. (In case you don’t remember, there are three.) I thought I’d introduce them this month. The outside gang consists of two sisters Freckles and Puddles. Their names kind of tell a little about them. Freckles has, well, freckles on her face. She has OCD, if dogs can have that. She loves golf balls and is a golfers dream....she will fetch them all day long! Her sister, who looks just like her was to be named Speckles - (sometimes I don’t understand the people’s sense of humor...) but she had
a couple accidents as a pup and the rest is history for Puddles. Puddles has become my mousing partner. We have spent a lot of time mastering the art of tag-team mousing. I won’t go into detail here....but we do it well. The third of the trio is named Shep. He is the only “boy” dog that lives here on the ranch and he was quite the introvert when he first showed up. He has gradually came out of his shell and likes to think he is a ladies man - although the only competition he gets is an occasional challenge from the portly Duke of next door. The outside gang really isn’t that bad, I just hate it when they want to play and they are soaking wet, which seems to be constantly these days.... Until next month.... I’ll be trying to stay dry...

“Will I ever be able to race my horse again” the owner asked the vet. The vet replied, “You certainly will, and you’ll probably beat her too!” Did you hear about the man who couldn’t tell the difference between his two horses? His friend suggested measuring them, that didn’t help though, the man discovered that the brown horse was only an inch taller than the white one!
