LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor

H

ave you got it yet? I have. Well, I’ve always had it, it just gets much worse this time of year! I spend way too much time thinking about it and even more time consumed with how I can pay for it. I know lots of other people that have it. I’ll admit they are mostly girls...but I know quite a few guys that have it too. My daughter has it bad, maybe worse than me. She will eventually have to learn how to take care of it on her own, because I won’t be able to take care of it for her forever. I mean, I don’t think there is a cure. At least I’ve never heard of one. Some people may go into remission, but it’s always there. What is it? Horse fever. It’s not an allergy like hay-fever. It is the desire to spend every extra minute of every day in the barn, working with and riding horses. I’ve had it since I was a kid - third generation to have it and passed on to my kids. There’s no getting over it for me. Until next month.......take care of that Horse fever by spending time in the fresh air - with your horse of course.......and most importantly, don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

Barrel Talk - Fusing Hocks If you have visited “Barrel Talk” on BarrelHorseWorld.com, then you’ll have an idea of what to expect here. If you are not familiar with this “on-line hot spot,” be prepared to read interesting comments from other people in the horse world. We try to include topics that might be helpful and/or meaningful to our readers. To read more visit www.barrelhorseworld.com. Be advised that advice found below is not endorsed by The Horse Resource. Always check with your vet before starting any treatment. Woodys Mama Would you buy a horse with hocks that are fusing or in the process? if all vet records were released? streakysox Personally, I would get my vet’s opinion then move on what he says. Many years ago I got rid of a nice horse because he had hock issues. Looking back, I know his hocks were fusing. If I had just put him out in the pasture for a year and left him alone, he would have been fine. FLITASTIC Absolutely! I would prefer they fused. No more pain and injections. krape Let them fuse on their own.... never anymore pain. Don’t let a vet do surgery....most times that does not work and you are done!! CanCan Alright Woody’s Mama. Back away from my gelding. I saw him first.

Or maybe we both just happened upon different horses at the same time. Woodys Mama I took a mare in to see where she was in the fusing process, her right hock is fused and the left has a little to go. I told him to inject her and he said she didnt need it. She doesnt fit me, and I was going to list her for sale. a few folks I have talked to about her, act like the FH is a deal breaker. Just wanting opinions wishingforsun I have a 7 year old gelding that it is in the process but he is only fusing the middle joint, which my vet said was more rare since they typically fuse both the middle and lower joints. He is about 2/3rds fused in both hocks. He came home from 5 months of cowhorse training with severe muscle and nerve damage in his back a year ago so we have been rehabbing that ever since so I am not sure when the fusing process

actually started. We injected the bottom joints on both, started riding him, and he is burying his hindend like his built to. Yay! I know the fusing process can be quite painful, and I understand that every horse is unique but how long does the process *typically* take? This is my first experience. r_beau For me, it would depend. My Red went through a period of fusing hocks, and fortunetly he is fully fused so we shouldn’t need injections anymore. But for him, he was so advanced that injections did NOT take care of all his pain and I had to give him Previcox on top of it.

are they - do they have any other “negative” things .... etc. And if the fusing hock would be worth it to me. Woodys Mama Thank you all for the input Im trying to find a jockey to show her for me. As soon as I get some credentials and videos I guess I will list her. She is supposed to be finished 1-3d depending on rider, I know she was rodeoed on a lot so no luck finding stats there. Read More at www.barrelhorseworld.com

And some horses never fully fuse, so then you are stuck always trying to manage them. So for me, it would depend on the individual horse - are they in training or finished - what caliber

News - By Tammy Knox (Indiana Grand) Jockey Cheyanna Patrick now college graduate at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – May 11, 2017 – Hard work, dedication, and perseverance are all good traits of a jockey. They are also good traits for a college student and ones that Jockey Cheyanna Patrick applied to her degree in criminology with a minor in Spanish. The 20-year-old graduated from the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa Saturday, May 6 and will enter law school this August at the University of Kentucky College of Law. A native of Brooksville, Fla., Cheyanna spent much of her younger educational years in Pendleton, Ind. while her family raced at Hoosier Park and Indiana Grand from April through November. Always excelling at school work, she was able to begin college at the age of 16 and pressed through to gain her degree early, all while keeping a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Cheyanna was one of 5,700 students that walked across the stage at USF to receive her bachelor’s degree. Her mother, Cindy, and her father, Gary, both in the historical statistics for owning and training Thoroughbreds, respectively at Indiana Grand, took a rare day off from work to be in attendance for such a momentous event for Cheyanna. “It was great to have my family there,” said Cheyanna. “They are my biggest supporters. We also had some family friends there too. It was a special day.” In addition to receiving her degree, Cheyanna also received the King O’Neal Scholar Award. Of the 5,700 in her graduating class, only 34 completed their degrees with a perfect 4.0, placing Cheyanna in an elite group for the honor. “It was hard at times and I had a couple of classes this year that were challenging, but I was able to keep my 4.0 GPA,” said Cheyanna. “I’m excited to start law school August 22.” As with every other aspect of her career thus far, choosing the University of Kentucky’s College of Law was also a goal for Patrick. The University offers specific classes in equine law as well as agricultural law journals, making it a perfect fit for Cheyanna’s dream of working in law someday that will apply to horses and racing. Plus, she will be surrounded by horses and racing while she completes her law degree. “UK’s law school was my top pick because of the classes they offer,” said Cheyanna. “Plus, there are lots of good firms in that area, so I’m hoping I can continue my career in the Lexington area after graduation.” One person that Cheyanna continues to lean on for support and guidance is Thoroughbred Owner Maggi Moss, who is an attorney in the Des Moines, Iowa. Moss wrote a letter of recommendation for Cheyanna to enter law school, which Cheyanna feels was a key component to her acceptance into UK. “I’ve never met Maggi Moss, but we have talked a lot through email the past several years and her assistance and advice have been so helpful,” said Cheyanna. “I hope she will continue to mentor me through law school.” Moss, who was Indiana Grand’s leading owner last season, made her first trip to Indiana for the Indiana Derby in 2016. However, Cheyanna was completing a six-week excursion through the country of Spain, which was associated with her minor in Spanish through USF.

Page 10

Cheyanna was the recipient of the Juan Saez Leading Apprentice Jockey Award at Indiana Grand in 2015. Although being a jockey is not a yearround gig for her, she is back on track this year at Indiana Grand. She has ridden two winners in the first 13 days of racing and also hit another career high when she guided Bipartisan to victory for trainer Carl Deville at Churchill Downs Saturday, April 29. In a riding career that is only parttime, she has won 55 races since beginning her career as a jockey at the age of 16 in 2013. She plans to continue to ride until it’s time to pack up and move to law school. “I will stay here (at Indiana Grand) and ride until law school starts,” said Patrick. “You are not allowed to have a job the first year of law school because it’s a full time job, so I’m not sure how much I will ride after I start school. Also, I’m supposed to do an internship in the summers. I will be a journeyman by then, so maybe I will ride a few here and there next summer.” Horses will always be part of Cheyanna’s life. The former National Barrel Horse Association All American Youth World Title holder still has four or five barrel horses and plans to always stay in touch with that aspect of competition. “Even after I graduate, I will always have barrel horses and will compete,” said Cheyanna. “I will always be involved in horses in some way.” Live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing continues through Saturday, Oct. 28. Racing is conducted Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 2:05 p.m. EST with Saturday racing beginning at 6:05 p.m. EST. Thursday racing will be held July 6 – Aug. 24 at 2:05 p.m. EST. About Indiana Grand Racing & Casino: Indiana Grand Racing & Casino holds multiple awards from industry publications for customer service, entertainment, gaming and dining. Located in Shelbyville, Ind., Indiana Grand features 2,200 of the latest slots and electronic table games in addition to a one-mile dirt race course and a seven-eighths mile turf course offering live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing each year. QUARTER HORSE RACING

Bruce was in attendance to watch Perfical win her first career race. She noted that the name is a little unique, and that a second name has caught on at the barn due to her flaxen main and tail along with her flashy chestnut coloring. “We had a hard time finding a name for her,” said Bruce. “The name comes from my husband (Mickey). When I ask him how things are, he always answers me ‘Perfical.’ So I told him I was going to name her that. But in the barn, she’s known as ‘Barbie’ so during the race, I was shouting ‘Come on Barbie.’”

Perifcal in Line to Carry on Success At Indiana Grand Racing Casino SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – May 09, 2017 – Owner Carolyn Bruce of Lawrenceburg, Ind. has experienced a lot of success in Quarter Horse racing in recent years. First, it was former Horse of the Year in Indiana Stinkin Rich, then last year, CB Come Fly With Me captured freshman filly honors with numerous wins. Now the youngest foal to hit the track from 2016 Broodmare of the Year Miss Scarlet looks to carry on the tradition. Starting from post seven, Perfical, rallied out of the gate and had control of the $16,000 two-year-old maiden race from the start, scooting home to a three-quarter length easy win under jockey Juan Pulido. Got Sand in My Shoes and Cesar Esqueda finished second over Sixes Loaded to Fly and Harold Collins for third in the 250yard dash over a muddy track. Owned by Bruce and trained by Joe Davis, Perfical was making only her second career start for her connections. The time of the dash was :13.751 seconds.

Davis, who had four entrants spread out over a pair of two-year-old maiden races on the day, has a lot to look forward to in 2017. In the final Quarter Horse race of the night, Stone Cold Leader accepted the challenge and broke his maiden as well, cruising to victory by a neck over Chick on the Beach (Esqueda). A Royal Bay and Harold Collins rounded out the top three in a time of :13.425 seconds. It was the first start back for 2016 Leading Jockey Rolando Pina, so the win with Stone Cold Leader was extra special for Davis to have his jockey back aboard. “We bought this colt out of the Indiana sale last fall,” said Davis. “The owner, Patrick Richardson, who is from South Carolina, actually had another one picked out but we got this one instead. He’s still a little green but he’s going to be a nice colt.” The Indiana sired Stone Cold Leader was also making his second career start. His maiden voyage was at Remington Park in March where he finished a good closing second. He will have several opportunities to shine in stakes action for the 2017 season at Indiana Grand.

“We had her out at Remington this winter and she got a bad gluteal pouch infection,” said Davis. “By the time we had her cleared up, it was time for the (Oklahoma) Futurity trials but she really wasn’t back 100 percent. She ran a good race out there, though, so it gave us a sign she had some talent.” Davis, who is the trainer of CB Come Fly With Me, sees some similarities in Perfical and his standout filly from last year. Although they don’t share the same coloring, they both have some willingness and talent on the track. “This one (Perfical) was the easiest to break of the bunch,” said Davis. “She’s really smart. I’ve had her a little longer too. I’ve had her

Page 12

Photos by Linscott Photography Pina and Davis ventured to Remington Park this past winter to race. Pina was injured in a starting gate mishap in early March that sidelined him with a pair of breaks just above his ankle. However, keeping him off the track was not an option and as soon as he got the okay from the doctor, he was back in action. “I’ve been galloping for about a week,” said Pina. “It’s still a little sore, but I couldn’t wait to get back riding and it sure feels better now (after winning his first start back.) Plus, I think the adrenaline makes me forget and it’s not there anymore.”

Indiana Grand will host six all-Quarter Horse nights in 2017 with the first one slated for Saturday, June 3. Other all-Quarter Horse racing events include July 8, Aug. 12, Sept. 16, Oct. 7 and Oct. 21.

Owned by Enrique Ibarra, Jess Kool Lady earned her third career win in four starts for trainer Victor Olivo. Olivo, who retired from riding in 2015, converted over to training last season and has already seen success from his small stable. Jess Kool Lady had two wins in three outings at Indiana Grand as a two year old last fall. Olivo then traveled to Oklahoma for the Oklahoma Derby trials at Remington Park in early March, turning in the fastest trial time before finishing fourth in the Grade III $250,000 final two weeks later. Purchased for $5,000 at the Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma, Jess Kool Lady now possesses almost $60,000 in career earnings for Ibarra. The partnership between Olivo and Ibarra is fairly new, but the friendship dates back more than a decade. “I actually bought a horse off Enrique (Ibarra) about 10 years ago,” said Olivo. “I also rode for him, too and we had a good friendship. When he found out I was training, he sent me two horses. He thought the other one was a better horse, but I told him this one (Jess Kool Lady) could run so he kept her and sold the other one.” Jess Kool Lady joined Olivo’s barn, which has now grown to 20 head, last August. Her first start, she was an impressive second before returning for a win before the end of the season. “She (Jess Kool Lady) doesn’t like the whip much,” said Olivo. “Giovani (Vazquez-Gomez) did a good job with her in her last race. He didn’t do anything aggressive with her. She runs much better without pressure from the rider.”

QUARTER HORSE RACING

Pina tied for 2016 Leading Jockey honors last season with Berkley Packer. Both jockeys scored 28 wins apiece to tie the record with Harold Collins (2013) for most wins recorded by a Quarter Horse jockey in a single season. It was the first career title for Pina.

QHRAI NEWS

The previous track record for 350 yards was established first in 2010 by Debs RQD and Manuel Gutierrez for Trainer Rolando Almanza in a time of :17.390. Swooners Only Eye and Harold Collins equaled that time in 2015 to share the record.

Jess Kool Lady Sets New Track Record at Indiana Grand Racing Casino SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – May 3, 2017 – A driving rainstorm didn’t deter Jess Kool Lady from displaying her best stride at Indiana Grand Friday, April 28. The three-year-old daughter of Apollitical Jess completed the 300 yard distance in a time of :17.384 seconds to establish the new mark. Jess Kool Lady and jockey Giovani Vasquez-Gomez began from post two in the impressive field of 10 starters that included several stakes winners. The duo made their presence known early in the race and rallied home on the inside to win by one-half length over My Royal Wagon and Harold Collins. WH Kenny G and Rodney Prescott rounded out the trifecta.

Quarter Horse racing is included in almost every racing program at Indiana Grand at the end of the card. Six Saturday nights have been dedicated to the sprinters, with all Quarter Horse action slated for June 3, July 8, Aug. 12, Sept. 16, Oct. 7 and Oct. 21. The Busters Claim the 2017 SE Match Race Championship! Chris Coffey, Bubby Skimehorn, Miranda Goff, Mikayla Conklin and Elaina McKinney teamed up to win over $3,000! The team won by a pretty good margin with the nearest team being 10 points away. This is not the first win for Chris Coffey or Bubby Skimehorn. Both have been on the winning Match Race teams before proving their ability to gather a winning team! The Match Race portion allows riders to join in a team effort for a sport that is traditionally a solo game. Each division awards the same number of points to the top twenty riders of that division making it competitive for riders and horses of all levels. Of course in addition to the Match Race was a full fledge Preferred Show Schedule. While the Busters may have won the Match Race, Bert Thompson-Skimehorn won about everything else! Bert and Shez Truly Old Times won all three Opens, Friday and Sunday’s Adult Class and the fastest time of the Match Race. Between all those classes and her IBRA Member bonus money Bert collected nearly $3,000 for the weekend with Shez Truly Old Times or Kaylynn as she is affectionately known. On top of all that money she won Wild Cards for the National Finals. I can’t wait to see what this pair accomplishes in Murfreesboro! You can find full results from the show along with pictures in the following pages. With the conclusion of the South East Match Race held in Liberty, KY, the IBRA will be headed to Dillsburg, PA for the North East Match Race and Preferred Show. This show will be the 5th Preferred Show of the season with a full show schedule for Open, Youth, Masters and Adult. There will be $6,500 added to the show and a $10,000 Guaranteed on Saturday. The Match Race itself will have $2,000 added and will payback 100%. The Match Race entry fee is only $25 per person. Stalls and Hookups are being reserved now so send in your reservations today! There will be no late fees to enter at the show but there is a $500 pre-entry bonus drawing for those who pre-enter their classes. The Final Preferred Show for the 2017 Season and final opportunity to earn Wild Cards before State Finals will be the Rebel Soule held by Dawn and Clea in Syracuse, NY. This marks the first time that an outside producer has hosted a IBRA Preferred Show and we are confident that Dawn and Clea will continue to produce their shows in stellar fashion! This will allow our Northern members including those in Canada a closer opportunity to run with the IBRA and earn points to qualify for Nationals and Wild Cards! Pro-Riders back! The IBRA is incredibly excited to have Pro-Rider Saddles back as our official IBRA Saddle. The trophy saddles from Pro-rider will start on a base level with basket stamping or a floral design. Depending on each states situation some will be able to offer upgrades at year end, some states will be allowing their members to order additional upgrades and some states will be wanting to hand out awards at their state show. Your individual state directors will be able to offer more information in that regard as we draw closer. All of the saddles will be built in Pro-Rider quality and the trophy saddles will have the same saddle tree as their premium saddles. We would like to extend our thanks to WR and Wanda from Diamond Cross for their support over the last two seasons and we wish them the best for the future. Stay tuned to the July issue as we will have National Finals information and Results from the upcoming NE Match Race and Preferred Show. Thank you all for your continued support of the IBRA!

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

By Christa Conway

Where Will I Shine? Have you ever ridden a horse that just didn’t like it’s job? I ride barrel horses and have ridden and trained a few that just did not want to be a barrel horse. Some of these horses were just not athletic enough, some weren’t fast enough and some couldn’t handle the pressure of the show atmosphere. Did that mean that those horses were no good for anything? Of course not. They may not have been superstars in the barrel pen, but they went on to be superstars in other disciplines and in other people’s eyes. They just had to find their niche. As a trainer it is my job to figure out if that horse has what it takes to be a good barrel horse or to know that maybe this horse is better suited to some other type of work. Some made great kid’s horses, some made cowboy mounted shooting horses, some just made great companions - but they were all great once they found out where they could shine. Not all horses are the same and it only hurts the horses to treat them all the same. Even if they have the talent to be a great barrel horse, they don’t all progress at the same speed, so comparing them only creates frustration in the trainer and the horse. Treat them as individuals. Treat them as superstars of being themselves until you figure out what it is they are good at doing. Challenge them at their learning pace, not yours or any other horse’s. And please remember that comparison and goal setting are two very different things. When I compare my horse to another horse, I get frustrated with where I am and blame the horse today. When I set a goal for this horse to be at the level of training of another horse, then I realistically know that this takes time and training and get to work at making it happen. Can you relate? If you can relate to all horses not being cut out to fit the mold of a barrel horse (or a reining horse, or a jumping horse, etc...) then you should be able to see where I’m going when I say that all people are not cut out the same either. We should never compare ourselves to others - as riders or as Christians. We are all made differently and will shine in different areas. It takes all of us working to our potential - seperately and together - to keep the body of Christ at it’s best.

INSPIRATION

God made us. There is only one me, only one you. Scriptures tells us that we are each special in our own way: Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. Psalm 139:14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. We all have a purpose and are a part of God’s overall plan. 1 Corinthians 12:27 Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it.

Page 28

Romans 12:4-5 For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. If you’re having trouble figuring out what your purpose is...where you will shine brightest for the Lord....ask him to show you. Spend time in prayer and listen for His guidance. Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Submit to God, let God put you where He wants you and you will be a superstar for Him!

Happy Trails & God Bless! Love in Christ, Christa

On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

BACK IN THE SADDLE I was ridin’ along at night Had a little barrel fever Had stayed at the bit house Couldn’t seem to leave’r

It was then she kind ’a stumbled I came out of that ol’ kak Seemed to fall for mile Landin’ on my back

No chow or water Is this how it would end In this dark hole Without a single friend

I reached my hands up My rope was hang from the horn Swearin’ the whole time To stay off that ol’ mashed corn

My ol’ pony knew her way home She was a good ol’ stick Gouged her with some iron She began to hit a lick

I had gone over the edge Into an hellish pit Layin’ there in pain Mad enough to spit

It was then I realized The Almighty was above I remembered that ol’ sin buster Preachin’ about His love

When I came out ‘a that pit Hugged that little mare Said Lord I know it was you We’re going to make quite a pair

Getting near the ranch I turned my pony loose We were kickin’ up some dust Me and my ol’ cayuse

All of the ranch hands were gone On a cattle drive No one knew I was here How could I survive

I cried out with all my heart Lord, I repent of my ways Get me out of this pit I’ll help you gather strays

Climbed back in the saddle Feelin’ a bit restored Singin’ a new song One about my Lord

Now one more ridge to ride Then it was all downhill I dug in my irons No more time to kill

As time passed in that pit My head began to clear Feeling pretty alone Knowin’ death was near

Lookin’ up I see my ol’ pony Standin’ at the pit’s rim Felt a little like cryin’ My future wasn’t so dark n grim

One Last (& Most Important) Thought… Read past issues of the Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for ALL of OUR sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day. He defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed - born again! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

LOOKING A Soul’s Journey

Living Exceptionally Why is it that we always doubt the lifechanging, the amazing, the different; but we embrace the usual, the negative, the “normal.” If things change in our lives or if things improve, we often ask, “well, yes, it’s good; but how long will it last?”; or say, “yes, things are good now; but it won’t last.” Why can’t it last?

INSPIRATION

God gives us life every day; so why wouldn’t we embrace it completely, totally, with all that we have? If we love; then love completely! If we enjoy something; then enjoy it all the way to the very core of our being. If we are angry; then be angry with fire in our souls. Half-hearted living is not living at all. It’s existing; and existing isn’t living!

- Reprint from 2012

Half-hearted living is not living at all. It’s existing; and existing isn’t living!

I hope I don’t live my life for the rest of my days on this earth at “half speed” or “safely.” I’m not talking about being foolish; but I am talking about “living exceptionally.” And by “living exceptionally” I mean living completely committed to whatever I’m doing each moment of each day.

If I’m cleaning stalls; then I ought to do it with gratitude of what God has given me. If I’m working with a horse; then I ought to do it in complete appreciation of the glory of the God shown in the creation of these majestic beings. And if I’m walking in the woods communicating or writing words, like these; then I should make it the best conversation with the Creator I’ve ever had or the best words I’ve ever written.

But today, I struggle with one thing — why would God care enough or trust me enough to entrust me in all my weakness with His work in my life? Won’t it be wasted by me, as I have wasted it before? Won’t I pass from this “phase” to another? Is this the way that life should be? And, my friends, I have no answers! But, I do know that all I can do is keep trying to do live more exceptionally every day!

There’s Critters and Then There’s Varmints

Last month I was waiting on the egg toting Easter Bunny. I never caught a glimpse of him...but he did leave me some doggy treats in my Easter basket. Maybe I’ll spot the sweet little critter next year. Shortly after the bunny left all the Easter baskets, we had some chickens meet their demise by a varmint (or varmints) that broke into the chicken coop and terrorized the hens for a good couple weeks. It got so bad that even after reinforcing the walls and fencing, the lady had to take drastic measures and she moved all the (remaining) chickens into the horse trailer for safety. That was something to witness every evening at roosting time. All of these hens learned where there safe place was and would line up politely at the horse trailer’s escape door and take turns jumping in one by one. The funniest thing was when the lady had the trailer out a little too late and the hens would seem lost until they seen their home on wheels returning. Then they would do a happy dance as the lady backed down the driveway. I

wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own two eyes. This horse trailer arrangement went on for at least three weeks while the lady tried to capture the chicken terrorizing varmints. After a late night snack of peanut butter (and maple syrup down my back) from what I now know is a live trap, I realized the lady was trying to trap the varmints too. I won’t elaborate much more on the trapping of this Jack Russell, except to say that the peanut butter was worth the few minutes of panic and the bath that followed. It took a little while, but the lady was persistent. She finally spotted the varmint one day as she was working around the chicken coop. Would you believe it was a WHOLE FAMILY of OPOSSUMS! There was a mom, dad and babies! So, the trap was set in a better location - I stayed away this time - and they caught one!

Flashback with Bella

I’d like to let you in on how the past month has went for yours truly. If there is such a thing as a “normal” month (let alone day) I have definitely NOT had one. It all started with the addition of a new creature here at the ranch. I was out minding my own business, probably catching mice or running off other unwanted varmits when I heard a commotion in the barn lot. A trailer had arrived and I heard all of the outside dogs carrying on as usual. (And of course the little black bark box had to put in her two cents.) I headed over to find out what all of the fuss was about. You see, a trailer isn’t that much news around here, but this smelled a little different than your usual everyday, run of the mill “horse” trailer. There was something a little different going on and was I ever surprised to find out what was about to be unloaded from this funny smelling trailer. The fella that was driving the truck made his way to the back of the trailer and before he could open the door, I heard the most awful sound, something I had never heard before.... and I’ve been a lot of places in all my dog

That same day, they pulled up the floorboards of the chicken coop and snared another one! My people are the real deal when it comes to varmint catching. That thing was pretty scary on the end of the snare! I’m no chicken (pun intended), but I wouldn’t have wanted to wrestle with that mad mama opossum! The lady and the rest of the crew that live here took the opossums away. Good riddance! Now the chickens are back in the chicken house and the horse trailer is for horses only. What have we learned? Critters = Good Varmints = Bad

Is There Really Such a Thing as Normal?

years! I was actually a little scared to see what was going to emerge from this smelly...and now noisy trailer. At that point I was hoping that whatever it was....it was fond of Jack Russel dogs. When the man opened the door, there it stood.....a ball of fur about the size of the neighbor dog, Duke. I couldn’t see it’s eyes (to be honest, I wasn’t sure if it had any.) It looked a lot like a miniature version of the big horses that the people around here spend alot of time riding....but there was no way they would be able to ride this scrawny thing! To top it all off it has the longest ears I have ever seen...and they stood up straight - all on their own!!! They didn’t fall over and flop around like Princess Annabelle’s ears always do. So strange! And then as I was checking out this odd little creature - from a safe distance of course - it let out that strange sound again. This time it sounded like “Yee Haw.” I figured maybe the critter thought it should try to fit in at the ranch and hollar like a cowboy. As I looked around, all of the people were

laughing. I kind of felt sorry for the little guy, who’s eyes were now showing through the fur on his face. The lady of the ranch took the time to brush him a little and I heard her call him a donkey. Finally - the new critter had been identified....a donkey.....and a miniature one at that!! This should get interesting..... To be continued........ Until next month.... “Yee Haw!!!”
