LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor
I
hope you have all had a wonderful summer show season and for those of you lucky enough to get to show throughout the winter months, I hope I’ll get to see you at a show this winter. We get a little break from the other pastimes through December. We look forward to a little more barrel racing with our family and friends during that time. Many of you know the juggling act it takes these days to keep your kids involved in school activities and sports (besides the work of having horses!) We are at that stage where we have one in college and one playing at a high level of volleyball (travel and high-school.) Although I miss the weekend warrior life, I wouldn’t trade these years and the memories we’re making for the world. Lord willing, the horses will be there when this season has passed.
Speaking of seasons...have you noticed the leaves on the trees? Until next month.......enjoy the changing seasons, take it all in from the back of your horse or wherever you are in life, and always rememeber to count your blessings on horseback every chance you get! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway
Barrel Talk - Worming Weanlings/Yearlings If you have visited “Barrel Talk” on BarrelHorseWorld.com, then you’ll have an idea of what to expect here. If you are not familiar with this “on-line hot spot,” be prepared to read interesting comments from other people in the horse world. We try to include topics that might be helpful and/or meaningful to our readers. To read more visit www.barrelhorseworld.com. Be advised that advice found below is not endorsed by The Horse Resource. Always check with your vet before starting any treatment. Kay-DRacing. How often do you worm your weanlings? What do you use and when? I’m curious because it was suggested to me that I keep my weanling on a daily wormer throughout the winter. Your thoughts?
(NOTE: these holidays are all 60 days apart) then it is time to start all over with QUEST ON NEW YEAR WEEK This is the worming schedule for everyone at my barn .
horsegirl A vet told me to worm weanlings monthly on a rotation until they reach a year old.
Kay-DRacing. BARRELHORSEUSA - QUESTIONS! At 5-6 months old .. give a whole tube of the P word round worm de-wormer .. (at this age .. 99% are round worms) An entire tube as in 1200lbs worth?! 30 days later give a double dose of ivermectin and continue this in 60 day intervals ... (by this time bot larvae have had time to enter his system) Again, a double dose as in double HIS weight at the time or 2 entire tubes? Maybe I’m thinking too much....
Kay-DRacing. A rotation as in Pyrante, Fenbendazole/Oxibendazole, & Ivermectin according to their weight, correct? horsegirl Yeppers. BARRELHORSE USA Worm your mare 2 weeks prior to birthing so when baby eats some of her poop within 24 hours to start his good gut action ... he does not get a load of round worm eggs . At 5-6 months old .. give a whole tube of the P word round worm de-wormer .. (at this age .. 99% are round worms) 30 days later give a double dose of ivermectin and continue this in 60 day intervals ... (by this time bot larvae have had time to enter his system) I do Quest on New Years week and it is good for 90 days and gets every thing .... at Easter I start my Ivermectin program AND ... on the following Holidays ... JULY 4TH LABOR DAY HALLOWEEN
rockinas I do mine with a boticide (moxidectin or ivermectin) in the fall and then I start them on Strongid 2X daily pellet and keep them on it through the winter. In early spring I deworm again with a boticide (whatever one I didn’t use in the fall) before turn them out in a big pasture for the summer. This has worked for me for years. Kay-DRacing. Thank you! It sounds like this is what they do as well. I’m mainly worried about “over worming”. Do you stop the pellet for a couple of weeks before you use the paste? Going by the weight of the foal, correct? Sorry for all of the questions. I just want to make sure im
doing it correct! BARRELHORSE USA RE: Entire tube at weaning ... you want to make a sure kill and not a maybeso worming it takes about a 100 tubes to even think about overdosing .. Double dosing equals by weight .... you know babies are going to do more spitting and owners are going to squirt more on the ground ... lol I also worm before feeding ... or give them a little feed after worming .. makes more slobbers so they get the entire amount down where the worms are .. lol For whatever reason they don’t get a full killing dose ... you don’t want some to survive and become immune to the wormer ... so load’em up and make your worm kill count!! Kay-DRacing. Thank you! I guess it just feel’s odd to me knowing that I’ll be giving a 5 month old colt an entire 1200lbs worth of wormer haha. rockinas In the fall I start them right on it immediately following the boticide. And in the spring I give the pellets right up until the day I give the boticide and put them out for the summer. I don’t like to overworm either but everyone’s situation is different. Our winters are tough and I have to drylot my weanlings/ yearlings so I do like to keep them on the Strongid as long as they are penned in. I live up north and have access to big pastures, which we rotational graze with cattle. My parasite
load on spring/summer/fall pasture is less than what it would be on a drylot situation, or a small paddock situation where there’s horses in them all the time. You just have to do what’s best for your situation but this is what works best for us. RoaniePonie11 Mocidectin is bad for young horses. My vets say not to risk giving it until at least a year old, maybe even 2. Kay-DRacing. I live in Northern MN so it sounds like we are in similar conditions. Unfortunately, I dont have access to rotational grazing at this time but hope to in the next couple of years. They are in a small pasture with not much grass but access to grass hay 24/7. It almost sounds easiest to do the daily wormer! This is my first young colt like this and he’s making me feel like I dont know didley squat! LOL and I’ve owned horses my entire life SG. I use the same schedule as the adult horses. Daily is great if you have them penned up and they are exposed to more manure than in a pasture rockinas RE: RoaniePonie11. It’s a matter of opinion. My vet says it is only bad if you overdose it. I don’t overdose it and have used it on all of my young horses ever since it first came on the market many years ago. Read More at:

Pina was very involved in all activities associated with PDJF Night at Indiana Grand, knowing the importance of supporting such a worthwhile organization that currently provides funding to 60 jockeys injured in racing incidents across North America, most of which have paralysis or brain injuries. Pina was in the dunk tank early in the evening and was also the anchor on the Tug of War team that took on the track maintenance crew pound for pound. The jockeys won their third straight Tug of War and remain undefeated.
QUARTER HORSE RACING
Six Saturday nights during the 2017 racing season at Indiana Grand are dedicated solely to Quarter Horse racing. The next all-Quarter Horse racing events are Saturday, Oct.7 and Oct. 21 with a first post of 6:05 p.m.
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 29, 2017 – CB Come Fly With Me was the two-year-old Indiana Quarter Horse champion filly last season and has returned as strong as ever for her sophomore year. The Desirio filly solidified her status Saturday, July 29, winning the 15th running of the Blue River Derby at Indiana Grand with Jockey Rolando Pina aboard. Starting from post three in the 10-horse lineup, CB Come Fly With Me broke sharply for Pina and got the first call. The filly, owned and bred by Carolyn Bruce of Lawrenceburg, Ind., seemed to be building up her speed with every stride during the 400-yard dash. Sicario and Cristian Esqueda looked like they might challenge from the inside at one point midway through the race, but CB Come Fly With Me was too strong, running under the wire as a one-half length winner over Sicario, who was later disqualified for interference. Kid Cartel and Giovani VazquezGomez rallied up late and moved into second place followed by HH Kentucky Krome and Oscar Macias for third.
Tinys First Pepsi Finds Second Career For Brown Stable
CB Come Fly With Me returned $5.20, $3.60 and $3.00 across the board as the favorite. She now has five wins in nine starts and her victory in the Blue River Derby placed her over the $225,000 mark for career earnings. Erin Thompson serves as the filly’s trainer and was with Bruce and her husband, Mickey, trackside to accept the trophy for their prized filly. The dam of CB Come Fly With Me has been exceptional for Bruce, producing three standouts thus far, including Stinkin Rich and Perfical in addition to CB Come Fly With Me. “We wanted to name this filly ‘Come Fly With Me’ but it was already taken,” noted Mickey in a previous interview. “So we added the CB for Carolyn in front to retain that name.” CB Come Fly With Me has only finished out of the top two twice in her 11 career starts. All six of her wins have been with Pina, who has only missed being aboard the Indiana bred champion once during her career. He missed a stakes race at Remington Park earlier this season due to a leg injury sustained in the starting gate at Remington Park a month before the race. Pina currently leads the Quarter Horse standings for the second straight year at Indiana Grand. He shared 2016 honors with Berkley Packer. The 2016 title was the first of his career and his first stakes win was also recorded last season at Indiana Grand.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Aug. 1, 2017) — Most trainers are faced with a decision about a horse’s future at some point in their career. That day arrived for Trainer Ron Brown earlier this summer. Tinys First Pepsi has been part of the Brown Stable since his two-year-old season. The now seven-year-old Quarter Horse still had the desire to race, but after earning nearly $300,000 during his career, the former Indiana bred champion had limited options on the racetrack. Tinys First Pepsi made what would become his final start as a racehorse in September 2016, finishing sixth. Although he was only beaten onehalf length for the win, Brown knew it was time to consider retirement.

Stone Cold Leader Tops QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity Trials
Tinys First Pepsi was put into training as the stable’s “pony horse” and has excelled at his new position with the barn. Brown has even turned down offers already from other trainers looking for a dependable “pony horse” but Brown isn’t looking to move him out of his sight. “I bought him (Tinys First Pepsi) and Pistolpacking Pepsi as yearlings from the same guy,” said Brown. “In fact, ‘Tiny’ was my first Quarter Horse. He’s such a kind horse and loved being a racehorse. He just needed a job. Not all retired racehorses can find a job like this but from day one he took to it.” “Tiny” is now the go-to horse for all of Brown’s Thoroughbred and Quarter Horses stabled at Indiana Grand. He even serves as the pony for Pistolpacking Pepsi, another Indiana champion in the Quarter Horse ranks for Brown. Between the two of them, the “Pepsi” boys have garnered Brown and his partner, Robert Ray, nearly $750,000 in purse earnings since 2012. “Tiny” accounted for nearly $300,000 of that tally, winning seven races during his career, including three stakes races. He started 33 times, all of which were recorded in the state of Indiana. His biggest win was in the $117,400 Sterlie Bertram Memorial in 2013 as a three-year-old. His success led into Pistolpacking Pepsi coming on the scene in 2013, winning the Miss Roxie Little Futurity, a stakes that “Tiny” had won the previous season. With their success as two Indiana bred champions, “Tiny” and “Pistol” have been featured on the Brown’s Christmas card the past few years. It’s safe to say that both “Pepsi” boys have earned a home for the duration of their life with the Browns. “If he (Tinys First Pepsi) had not worked out as a pony, he would have been a pasture ornament at our place,” said Brown, who has a 10 acre farm near Connersville, Ind. “They will both have a home for life.” Brown and his wife, Shirley, are very involved in the day to day operations of their barn and are enjoying a “second career” of their own. The Browns owned and operated a very successful trucking business in Connersville before retiring and moving into the racing industry full time at the turn of the century. They started out with just a few Thoroughbreds and later added Quarter Horses to their daily routine. Since that time, Brown has implemented a new rule in the barn. “We are all Pepsi drinkers in our barn,” smiled Brown. “No other soda brands are allowed.”
SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017) – A total of 40 horses vied for a spot among the top 10 to advance to the upcoming $100,000 Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI) Stallion Service Auction (SSA) Futurity final set for Saturday, Aug. 26 at Indiana Grand. It took five trials to determine the front runner for the final and Stone Cold Leader with Rolando Pina earned that honor, winning the fourth of five trials in a time of :17.727 seconds. The program was the third of six all-Quarter Horse racing programs at Indiana Grand for 2017. Starting from post one in the eight-horse lineup, Stone Cold Leader was a step slow out of the starting gate but quickly recovered. By the time the field was halfway through the 350-yard dash, the son of Brookstone Bay was in contention, pulling away for a half-length win in the final strides. SR Shambles and James Flores were close the entire way for second followed by Be Afraid and Danny Martinez who regrouped after shifting wide at the start from the outside to finish third. Stone Cold Leader paid $4.60, $2.60, and $2.10 as the race favorite. The win was his fourth consecutive trip to the winner’s circle for Owner Patrick Richardson of South Carolina and Trainer Erin Thompson. The freshman gelding was purchased out of the Indiana QHRAI Speed Sale last fall for $10,500 and has now pulled in earnings of nearly $120,000. The second fastest trial was won by a horse that broke his maiden in style. Beach Treat, owned and trained by Ron Brown, rallied home under Harold Collins in a time of :17.839 seconds. The Escondido Beach gelding soared to the front and never looked back, posting a half-length win over race favorite WRs Quick Secret and Berkley Packer. JJ James and Juan Pulido finished third. “He (Beach Treat) left good and I switched to the left hand and he took off,” said Collins, who was aboard for the second time. “He let up a little so I switched back to the right and it was over right then. This is a real nice horse.”

“He (Tinys First Pepsi) had just got to where he was a step slow,” said Brown. “We turned him out for almost a year and although he’s not going to race, he still has the mindset to work. I’m tickled to death to find another career for him.”
QHRAI NEWS - Stories by Tammy Knox, Photos by Linscott Photo Beach Treat paid $12.20, $4.40, $3.20 as a mild surprise winner in the race. He was making his fourth career start. It was the first time the sorrel gelding had tried 350 yards, which proved to be a winning ticket for him.

He’s gonna love 400 (yards).” The top 10 qualifiers for the QHRAI SSA, with jockey and time, includes: Stone Cold Leader (Rolando Pina, :17.727); SR Shambles (James Flores, :17.798); Beach Treat (Harold Collins, :17.838); Dicey Dream (Berkley Packer, :17.882); Be Afraid (Danny Martinez, :17.923); WRs Quick Secret (Berkley Packer, :17.938); Rockys Candy Shop (Berkley Packer, :17.942); Twisted Lil Secret (Rodney Prescott, :17.972); DNA Bells Bay (Juan Pulido, :18.040); and HQH Fancy Pants ( James Flores, :18.060). Trainer Jeannette Hoover had two advance to the final (SR Shambles and HQH Fancy Pants). Read on to learn the outcome of the QHRAI SSA Futurity finals held Saturday, Aug. 26, joining the $50,000 QHRAI SSA Derby.
Wh Kenny G Sings Winning Tune In Woodard Trials
In the second trial, Stinkin Rich was all business for Rolando Pina, dominating his trial in a time of :19.961 seconds, the third fastest heading into the final. The grey son of One Famous Eagle stepped out of the gate with no issues, using the first few strides to find his quick gear halfway through the race. In the end, Stinkin Rich, a former Indiana Quarter Horse of the Year and track record holder, was a winner by one-half length over Beach Birdie and Juan Pulido, who stuck close to the leader the entire way. Pistolpacking Pepsi and Harold Collins rallied up for third. Owned by Carolyn Bruce of Lawrenceburg, Ind., Stinkin Rich now has eight career wins in 15 career starts. The majority of his $335,000-plus earnings have been recorded on the Indiana circuit. He is trained by Matt Frazier. Dna Dales Prospect Quickest In QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Derby Trials
SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017) – Former Indiana Quarter Horse champ WH Kenny G used his long stride to rally home first in his trial and also record the fastest time of two trials for the Bob Woodard Memorial Classic, set for Friday, Aug. 25. Ridden by Harold Collins, the four-year-old son of Gold Medal Jess stopped the timer in :19.859 seconds for the 400-yard dash. Starting from post five in the reduced field of six starters, WH Kenny G had a clean start and was close throughout. In the final steps, the gelding’s strides were visibly longer as he overtook his competition to win by an easy one and one-half lengths at the wire. Beach Bum Eddie and Cesar Esqueda did not give up without a fight, finishing second by a neck over WH Design By Dash and Oscar Macias.
SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017) – Three trials were held to determine the final field for the $50,000 Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI) Stallion Service Auction (SSA) Derby and former stakes winner DNA Dales Prospect and Rodney Prescott came alive to win the final trial of the Derby, posting the fastest time. The duo covered the 400-yard dash in a time of :20.007 seconds to secure the top spot on the list of the 10 finalists.
Owned by Robert Ray and Ron Brown, WH Kenny G earned his ninth career win and boosted his career earnings to more than $205,000 with the win. He is trained by Brown, who recorded his second win of the night with Collins during the third all-Quarter Horse racing night of 2017 at Indiana Grand.
Starting from post six, DNA Dales Prospect was the first one out of the gate and got moving early. He maintained ground in the center of the track as Trophy Wife B and Cesar Esqueda and American Purr and James Flores both rallied for the top spot early in the race. In the final strides, DNA Dales Prospect wore down the leaders and hit the wire

Stories by Tammy Knox, Photos by Linscott Photo just a nose ahead of American Purr for the win. Izzy Bleu Bayou and Berkley Packer closed in nicely to finish a neck back in third. Trained by Randy Smith, DNA Dales Prospect was the favorite of the field, paying $7.40, $4.40, and $3.20 across the board. The Coronas Prospect sophomore is owned by Donna and Noel Alexander’s DNA Quarter Horses LLC of Central Illinois. He is now four for seven lifetime as he moves to the QHRAI SSA Derby final slated for Saturday, Aug. 26.
The third and final trial of the evening was won by Dnachrystalsfighter and James Flores. Their time was recorded at :20.206 seconds, giving Smith four wins on the card and two for Packer and owners DNA Quarter Horses. The daughter of Fighter on Fire earned her first win of the season as she steps up into the final for the QHRAI SSA Derby. “She gives it all she’s got every time,” said Smith. “She is a lot better at three than she was a two. She’s come into it (speed) more this year.” The top 10 finalists for the QHRAI SSA Derby, with jockey and time, include: DNA Dales Prospect (Rodney Prescott, :20.007); American Purr (James Flores, :20.008); Gridiron Girl B (Rodney Prescott, :20.053); Izzy Bleu Bayou (Berkley Packer, :20.056); Trophy Wife B (Cesar Esqueda, :20.086); HH Kentucky Krome (Oscar Macias, :20.094); American Cowgirl 42 (Alex Estrada, :20.174); Dnachrystalsfighter (James Flores, :20.206); Tru Lee Quick (Alberto Pusac, :20.224); and Powerful Stone (Cesar Esqueda, :20.302). Smith will saddle three for the final (DNA Dales Prospect, Izzy Bleu Bayou, Dnachrystalsfighter) while Trainer Tony Cunningham will saddle two (Trophy Wife B and Powerful Stone.)
Stinkin Rich Extends Win Streak In Woodard Classic
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 25, 2017 – Stinkin Rich and Jockey Rolando Pina extended their win streak to five and retained the title in the ninth running of the $88,700 Bob Woodard Memorial Classic Friday, Aug. 25 at Indiana Grand. The duo covered the 400-yard dash in a time of :19.781 seconds for trainer, Matt Frazier.. Stinkin Rich was easily detectable out of the starting gate in the center of the pack from post five in the 10-horse lineup. The shiny grey gelding had a clean break and was a factor from the start. A few strides into the race, he claimed the top spot and never looked back. Beach Cartel and Berkley Packer, who started from post three, had to dip down to the inside to find a clear running path and looked like they might threaten at the end while WH Design By Dash and Oscar Macias were rallying hard on the outside. But it was smooth sailing for Stinkin Rich who earned the win by the margin of one-half length over WH Design By Dash on the outside. Also closing in well to finish third was WH Kenny G and Harold Collins to round out the trifecta. “I had some confidence in this horse coming into the race,” said Pina. “He felt real good in the trials and came back real strong. He stood in the gates well today too. I looked around in the gate and he broke out real fine, so I didn’t ask too much of him early. I wanted to save him for the distance. He’s a competition horse so when he sees the other horses he kicks it in on his own.” Owned and bred by Carolyn Bruce of Lawrenceburg, Ind., Stinkin Rich was the heavy favorite of the field, paying $4.60, $3.80, $2.80 across the board. The son of One Famous Eagle has now scored nine career wins, five of which are stakes victories, and has accumulated purse earnings in excess of $391,000, making him the second richest Indiana bred Quarter Horse of all time behind Pistolpacking Pepsi, who has earned more than $450,000 and was also part of the Woodard Memorial Classic field. “I have several horses that are home bred and this one is from the same mare as CB Come Fly With Me,” said Bruce in a post race interview with Peter Lurie, nationally known on-air racing analyst. “I raise them from birth and they are all fairly gentle. I knew early this horse was going to be special. He had the looks and the confirmation from the start. He broke his maiden in his first start. He’s five now but I won’t retire him until he tells me he’s ready to retire. He’ll retire to our farm.”

The change was requested by track officials at Indiana Grand so that all resources can be shifted to Hoosier Park for the monumental two-day Breeders Crown event slated for Friday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Oct. 28 beginning at 6 p.m.
Stinkin Rich In Woodard Classic Stinkin Rich didn’t quite equal his time in the 2016 edition of the Woodard Memorial Classic, where he established a new stakes record of :19.528 seconds. Pina was also aboard for that victory. Stinkin Rich is undefeated since joining forces with Pina, who was the co-leading Quarter Horse jockey last season at Indiana Grand. Pina is currently leading the standings once again this season with 18 wins. The Woodard Memorial Classic is a great lead-in to two Quarter Horse stakes final slated for Saturday, Aug. 26. The 18th running of the $176,578 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity and the 18th running of the $83,901 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Derby will highlight the end of the racing program Saturday as races nine and ten, respectively. There are also three all-Quarter Horse racing nights left in 2017 with the next night dedicated to the sprinters set for Saturday, Sept. 16. Other nights include Saturday, Oct. 7 leading into Saturday, Oct. 21, which is Quarter Horse Stakes Night featuring five stakes and purses in excess of $625,000.
Final day of racing moved to Friday, October 27 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino
Many departments at Indiana Grand are already scheduled to be at Hoosier Park during both nights of the Breeders Crown, including individuals from security, mutuels, food and beverage and marketing. Also, equipment at Indiana Grand is also being relocated to Hoosier Park to enhance their operations and make both evenings as efficient as possible for the large crowds in attendance. “Hosting the Breeders Crown is a massive undertaking for the team at Hoosier Park and we identified early on in the process that additional support from Indiana Grand was crucial,” added Schuster. “This move for our racing season allows us to provide all the necessary resources we have to ensure Hoosier Park can fully accommodate the large number of racing fans that will be coming to Central Indiana over the twoday Breeders Crown event. This is a very historic time for Indiana horse racing and I’m glad we will be a small part of it.” The final week of racing will now offer all afternoon racing cards Tuesday, Oct. 24 through Friday, Oct. 27. First post for all four days will be 2:05 p.m.
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 29, 2017 – The Indiana Horse Racing Commission approved a request to alter the final week of racing at Indiana Grand during its regular monthly meeting Friday, Aug. 25. The 120-day racing season will now include a special day of racing Thursday, Oct. 26 and the final day of racing is slated for Friday, Oct. 27. The altered schedule was requested to show full support of the prestigious $6 million Breeders Crown at Hoosier Park, Indiana Grand’s sister track.

“We want to do everything we can to support Indiana racing and the world harness racing championship Breeders Crown event at Hoosier Park,” said Jon Schuster, vice president and general manager of racing at Indiana Grand. “By adding a special racing program Thursday and ending our season on Friday, Oct. 27, we will provide our horsemen with the same number of racing days and opportunities for this racing season. This change will also allow us to lend more support to Hoosier Park as they host the first Breeders Crown ever held in Indiana.”

Stone Cold Leader Wins $176,578 QHRAI SSA Futurity
QUARTER HORSE RACING
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 26, 2017 – Stone Cold Leader has been tough all year, and he showed just how tough he can be when put to the test. After a less than desirable start, the two-year-old son of Brookstone Bay rallied late in the 350-yard dash to overtake Be Afraid for the win in the $176,578 Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI) Stallion Service Auction (SSA) Futurity Saturday, Aug. 26 at Indiana Grand.
Starting from post three in the 10-horse lineup, Stone Cold Leader was in tight quarters coming out of the gate and did everything he could to keep himself planted between horses. As the field moved on down the track, space began to open up and Jockey Rolando Pina had a tough assignment. Pina had to get Stone Cold Leader back on his game and get his momentum back. Be Afraid and Alonso Rivera had moved into a short lead on the outside and with just steps left to the finish line, victory looked like it would be all his. However, Stone Cold Leader dug in gamely and rallied back quickly, overtaking Be Afraid in the very last stride to win by a head in a time of :17.951. Rockys Candy Shop and Cody Smith finished another nose back in third. Selected as the heavy favorite due to his four-race win streak coming into the QHRAI SSA Futurity, Stone Cold Leader paid $3.40, $2.80, $2.20 across the board. He is now five for six lifetime with purse earnings in excess of $223,000 for owner Patrick Richardson of South Carolina. Richardson, who is a forklift driver for NuCor Steel Berkley, is fairly new to the racing game. He had one horse prior to Stone Cold Leader and went to the QHRAI Speed Sale last fall in Indiana, hoping to snag another yearling. When his plans didn’t work out, he purchased Stone Cold Leader, Hip No. 37, for $10,500. His purchase has paid ten times the dividends and he is now the owner of arguably the best Indiana bred two-year-old in the state. Richardson is always accompanied by many family and friends, who make the 11hour drive up from South Carolina to watch Stone Cold Leader run. Stone Cold Leader is trained by Erin Thompson, who has conditioned the gelding’s schedule very well heading into the Futurity Final. “He (Stone Cold Leader) is a pretty cool cucumber behind the gate,” said Thompson. “Rolando (Pina) always handles him so well. But he (Stone Cold Leader) about gave us a heart attack tonight. He got pushed around a lot and still fought back. It was a great finish.”
Pina is currently leading the Quarter Horse standings once again for 2017. He earned his first leading jockey title last season when he shared the honor with Berkley Packer for Leading Quarter Horse Jockey at Indiana Grand. This season, Pina has recorded 19 wins and well over $500,000 in purse earnings to hold the top spot. This is the second year in a row that Pina has won the QHRAI SSA Futurity, winning the event in 2016 with CB Come Fly With Me in a stakes record time of :17.594 seconds. The win with Stone Cold Leader also marked the 12th trip to the winner’s circle for Thompson, who is among the track’s top five leading Quarter Horse trainers in 2017.

HH Kentucky Krome Wins QHRAI SSA Derby SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 26, 2017 – It took most of the 400-yard distance but HH Kentucky Krome proved to be the quickest at the end, earning the win in the 18th running of the $83,901 Quarter Horse Racing Association (QHRAI) Stallion Service Auction (SSA) Derby Saturday, Aug. 26 at Indiana Grand. Ridden by Oscar Macias, the three-year-old sorrel son of La Jollaroid won the race in a time of :20.098 seconds. Starting from post nine in the 10-horse lineup, HH Kentucky Krome was not the first horse who captured the attention out of the starting gate. Trophy Wife B and Cesar Esqueda got the early nod in mid pack while race favorite Gridiron Girl B and Rodney Prescott pressed on right beside her. It wasn’t until the final strides that the big chestnut appeared he might be a threat at the finish as HH Kentucky Krome hit another gear late in the race. Powering up on the outside, HH Kentucky Krome was able to pass all of his rivals to earn the victory by a neck over Gridiron Girl B for second. DNA Dales Prospect and Cody Smith maintained positioning, just a nose back in the tight photo for third.
HH Kentucky Krome nearly doubled his career earnings with his win in the QHRAI SSA Derby. He now has in excess of $108,000. “He ran a great race tonight,” added Martin. “These owners (Larry Carter and John Myers) have raised him and to my knowledge, this is their first baby that has made it to the track, so I’m very happy for them. And, he has a half-brother coming up next year that looks just like him. If he’s half as good as this one, we will be in great shape.”
Owned by breeders Larry Carter and John Myers, HH Kentucky Krome, the second favorite of the field, paid $7.40, $3.40, $2.60 across the board. The race was his fifth career trip to the winner’s circle in 14 career tries and marked his first career stakes win after several near misses in the finals. He is trained by Paul Martin of Muncie, Ind. “The outside post was ultra important for this horse tonight,” said Martin, who serves as the president of QHRAI. “He has drawn inside post positions for all of the other finals and just had tough trips. We have been waiting for our luck to change and when he drew outside, it really helped.”

Keen Liaison Turns In Quickest Bertram Memorial Trial
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Sept. 16, 2017 – Keen Liaison and Ronald Hisby set the bar in the first of three trials for the upcoming $100,000 Sterlie Bertram Memorial Stakes Saturday, Sept. 16. The duo turned in the fastest time of :20.080 seconds heading into the Saturday, Sept. 30 final at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. Starting from post six as the favorite of the eight-horse field, Keen Liaison had a good break and was all business from start to finish in the 400-yard dash. The three-year-old daughter of Sixes Liaison grabbed the lead early and could not be caught, winning the race by one-half length at the wire. Dreamers Liaison, also a son of Sixes Liaison, kept close the entire race for Rodney Prescott to finish second over Kid Cartel and Giovani Vazquez-Gomez, who came out on top of a close photo for third. Owned by James Black and trained by Erin Thompson, Keen Liaison paid $5.60, $4.00, $2.60 across the board. She is now four for five in 2017, just missing a perfect season by the margin of a nose earlier this year to finish second. Keen Liaison increased her career earnings to more than $78,000 with the win in the Bertram Memorial trial. She will have her eye on the top prize in the final, hoping to win her second stakes race of the year. Keen Liaison won the $98,000 Harley Greene Derby in early June for her connections. In other trial action, Kids Bright Image and Danny Martinez rallied home winners in the final trial, grabbing the win by a nose over Zoomin B Cartel and Berkley Packer. HH Kentucky Krome and Os-
car Macias finished third and will also advance to the final. The time of :20.209 seconds ranks Kids Bright Image third on the list of fastest qualifiers for the Bertram Memorial final behind Keen Liaison and Dreamers Liaison. Owned by Alberto Valadez, Kids Bright Image is trained by Sacramento Chavez. The win was the Kool Quick Kid gelding’s second straight trip to the winner’s circle, now scoring two victories in three outings this year. The final trial of the night was won by Tru Lee Quick and Harold Collins in a time of :20.374 seconds. Our Daily Bread
Not, give us enough bread for the week. Not, give us bread to last the month; just...this day our daily bread....only what we need today. I can only testify to my own personal experience and some will say it’s coincidence or that I am making more of it, but I have witnessed in my life many, many times God’s grace in this matter. My flesh will get to fretting over a bill that is due and the due date is quickly approaching while the mailbox money isn’t showing up. Then BAM.... there it is - on the day I need it, just in time, just enough.
Reciting the Lord’s prayer was common for me as a small child growing up in a Catholic home. I don’t know how old I was when I first heard it or when I was able to repeat the words from memory. My family moved to a Baptist church when I was in grade school, but I still remember that simple prayer I learned so long ago. In all honesty, I only recently (within the last few years) took the time to really dig deep into the words Jesus gives us as a guideline of how to pray. Even more recently I have had cause to focus on the simple words “give us this day our daily bread.”
INSPIRATION
You see, I am a planner and tend to be a worrier. I don’t know if it’s my genetics or my conditioning that has built these traits within me, I just know they are part of who I am. I like to know what’s on the agenda for the week, who is taking care of what chores this evening and how I am going to pay for that unexpected bill and still buy groceries. In other words, I need a plan to prevent the worry from sneaking in. Those traits are also amplified in someone like me who is self-employed and waits on “mailbox money” to pay those unexpected bills and buy groceries. It is a challenge day to day to remind myself that I only have to put my faith in the right place and my (daily) needs will be met. Give us this day our daily bread.
Page 30
her walk.
Coincidence? No way. That’s my Father answering a simple prayer from a simple child of His who struggles with this part of
Should I learn that there is no need to fret? Yes, I know in my heart that He will provide what I need for today. And again, I remind myself why worry about tomorrow when it isn’t here yet?!?! This day...daily bread. Sometimes we get way too far ahead of ourselves and put too much pressure on ourselves and those around us when all we need do is remember to put our faith in Him and talk to him. Even if the only prayer you pray is the Lord’s prayer - it covers everything! (I personally talk to him all day at random times and He ALWAYS listens.) Does this mean that I shouldn’t be prepared and work towards the needs of tomorrow? Of course not, I still go to my office and work everyday and I still send out invoices and expect them to be paid. I just have to realize that God is the true provider of all of my needs, not me, not my husband’s job, etc. It all belongs to God and He is ultimately in control I will handle tomorrow when tomorrow comes, if it’s the Lord’s will (just like we are told to pray in the Lord’s prayer.) James 4:13-15 (NIV) 13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow.
By Christa Conway What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” One of my favorite scriptures is “coincidentally” following the Lord’s prayer in Matthew: Matthew 6:25-34 (NIV) 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. And finally, if you have not memorized the Lord’s prayer like I have, here’s your chance: Matthew 6:9-13 (KJV) 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Winner Winner Lat’s Turkey Dinner Lat saddled up early His best pony Ol Rock He was was black as night Except for one white sock
But this day was different Ol’ Rock was ridin’ pretty well Till a turkey flew off his roost Causin’ Lat a livin’ hell
Yep it went off But Lat weren’t really hurt Just couldn’t believe his eyes As he lay there in the dirt
Now Ol Rock weren’t really solid He was really kinda green Would have been a good’en If he weren’t so stinkin’ mean
Ol Rock broke into Yep he came apart Lat was in trouble Right from the start
That turkey that caused the wreck Fell to the ground dead That misfire from ol Lat’s colt Blew off the gobblers head
Just a bit twitchy And he was bad to bite Shoein’ weren’t that easy More like an all-day fight
First he blew a stirrup Then he lost his seat When he hit the ground It sure weren’t on his feet
So Lat gathered him up Then caught his sorry horse Thankin the Lord above For the days main course
But he was the best That poor ol Lat had He didn’t ride for pleasure Cause it made him fightin’ mad
That’s when it happened When he hit the ground That ol colt on his hip Made a deafenin’ sound
Yep he had a sorry horse And hit the ground that day Almost shot himself But he still had time to pray
He said, Lord thank you For makin’ me a winner Providin’ all I need Cause I’m havin’ turkey for dinner Ephesians 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ By: Bro. Brad Curtis 11/21/12

One Last (& Most Important) Thought… Read past issues of the Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!
Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for ALL of OUR sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day. He defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed - born again! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15
That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Chasing Sunsets
INSPIRATION
I hope you’ve noticed the beautiful fall sunsets we’ve had recently. If not, please slow down a little more in the evening hours and take note of God’s brilliant brushstrokes across the western sky. Being addicted to taking pictures and always searching for the first “perfect photo” and/or the next “really good photo”, I decided I was going to find a good location without obstruction to photograph the sunset. So one evening, I opened the door to my truck; called for Cinch and Cowboy to keep me company; and headed down the road. The first stop had a good view; but I was too late and the sun had already disappeared over the horizon. The next stop had a better view; but again, I was too late. Next thing I know, I’m gunning my truck on gravel roads; powersliding through turns; and heading farther west and farther from home. I finally “caught up” and I jumped out of my truck; ran out in a field; dropped down to my knees to get the right angle; snapped thirty or forty pictures; and the sunset was already gone.
- Reprint from 2012
“Isn’t that what most of us do all the time?” We chase something we can never catch. I ran back to my truck; turned around in the middle of the road; and headed further west. Three or four minutes later, I found another great view. I jumped out again and “click, click, click”. For the next 40 minutes, I crisscrossed countless country roads chasing a sunset. As I drove back home with only a glow left on the horizon in my rearview mirror, I thought “Chris, you were just chasing a sunset. How stupid is that?” In reality, I never came close to “catching” the sunset. It was actually thousands of miles away from me, even when I thought I was close. But, then I thought – “Isn’t that what most of us do all the time?” We chase something we can never catch. We can appreciate the beauty of it. We can enjoy its brilliance. We can relax with it at
the end of the day; but we can never catch it no matter how hard we try or how long we are willing to chase it. It only lasts a few moments. It is here; and it is gone. The sunset only represents the end of another day filled with sunshine. It gets all the glory, all the attention and all the memories. Everyone stops to appreciate the fleeting beauty of its multi-colored luminescence; but take for granted all the preceding moments of warm sunshine. It’s the emotional stimulation of a beautiful sunset that we are drawn to; but the consistent moments of sunshine provide life-giving and sustaining power to our lives. In the end, it’s the sunshine of the entire day, not the fleeting moments of a sunset that will nurture us; keep us living exceptionally; and allow us to develop as we were divinely designed.

Barks N“Bell”a Bits
My cleverness has caught up with me and bit me in the booty. I thought I was being sly and capitalizing on the people thinking I was losing my hearing....well, they decided that in order to keep track of me, I should wear a bell for them to hear.
Well played, well played.
A classic example of a “typical day” here at the ranch could include an unlimited supply of cars and trucks pulling in and out of the driveway, these will almost always get a few barks from the outside dogs, probably a few from your truly and definitely a barking remix from the Princess. The vehicle induced barking is just the tip of the decible iceberg. When the people take us (me and Annie) outside to feed the horses first thing in the morning, our visit includes a “Good Morning” nicker from most every horse on the property. Our visit to the barn also gets the standard laugh from the ranch’s latest animal authority on obnoxiousness, Seven the donkey. He would most likely outdo the “little black bark box” in my book if I had to bring him in the house too. He laughs at everything!
humans,
Until next month, it’s a miracle...do you think they’ll buy into my miraculous ability to hear again? (maybe?)
Flashback with B
Life is NEVER dull - or quiet - around here at the ranch. Sometimes I think that I get more rest when we are on the road somewhere at a horse show or rodeo. I can guarantee you that a quiet day around here is very hard to come by.

Seriously?? ella You think that’s funny? Of course, he has the most annoying and loud laugh I have ever heard. Heeeeee Haw Haw Haw Haw....Heeeeeeeee Haw Haw Haw. I mean, come on.....really? Who laughs like that?
Seven has became a topic of laughter from all points of view, but none get as many laughs as the donkey himself. But I can assure you that most of the time, I just don’t get it. Honestly, I think Seven just has a twisted sense of humor. Most of the things he laughs about are “incidents” created by the little pot stirring donkey himself. He has created quite a name among the visitors here at the ranch. (I think “Court Jester” would be a fitting.) His antics have already included several escapes, chasing dogs and cars (yes, I said it) and aggravating horses every chance he gets. He likes to pull on the horses’ tails, he doesn’t chew on them.... just grabs them with his mouth and then pulls. Some of the horses don’t get his “jokes” either....and they usually let him know right away that he isn’t as funny as he thinks. Some just tolerate him....I call them his enablers!
As for me, I refuse to encourage his ridiculous behavior. He is just a prank playing, loud laughing, ego-maniac who likes to be the center of attention. What’s so funny about that? Until next month.... Keep it down.......
