LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor

H

appy New Year! I hope you all had a very blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year! We had a wonderful Christmas spent with family and friends. Our kids are past the point of the early Christmas morning anticipation, but we’ll make the most of it as long as we can!

A couple days after Christmas we had the sad task of laying to rest one of our horses that had been with us a very long time. It was one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make, but I wouldn’t have changed any part of having him here up until the end. You can read more about this special horse in the Christian Cowboy Corral this month. Thank you for allowing me to share the experience and the memories of this special horse with you all. If you’re making resolutions this year, I hope you keep them. If you’re not making resolutions, I hope you still make 2017 a great year. Remember, we always have a choice. We can’t always choose our circumstances, but we can choose how we react to them. Until next month.......spend some time with an old equine friend.......and most importantly, don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk” - Hard to Catch If you have visited “Barrel Talk” on BarrelHorseWorld.com, then you’ll have an idea of what to expect here. If you are not familiar with this “on-line hot spot,” be prepared to read interesting comments from other people in the horse world. We try to include topics that might be helpful and/or meaningful to our readers. To read more visit www.barrelhorseworld.com. Be advised that advice found below is not endorsed by The Horse Resource. Always check with your vet before starting any treatment. Hard to Catch Horse Flamin10 Usually when it’s time to feed my mare comes up in the pasture, she gets fed, locked up, and I then do what I need to with her (ride, give meds, whatever needs to be done). I’ve had her 3.5 years and she’s been like that always..don’t show her the halter and always provide food to catch her. Lately she’s been not wanting to go in her stall and as such she can’t be caught. I’ve tried everything I know for 3.5 years to break her of this and I’m out of knowledge at this point. Once she’s caught she’s fine, it’s the catching part that is strategic at this point. BARRELHORSE USA Stop grabbing when trying to catch her .... Put a broodmare neck band on her ... changes their attitude ... and rub on horse before sneaking a hand on the neck band to lead her with. Use this also when you take her halter off to turn her loose .. make her stay with you while you pet around on her ... Since she has been taught not to be caught ... put her in a dry lot or round pen with a halter and a 15ft slick poly lead rope with no knots in the end as a drag line .... this way you can walk out step on lead rope and walk on it

Page 6

almost to the horse or if she shows signs of jerking it out from under your foot ... if she runs .. jerk her around to face you aggressively then pet on her ... most never figure out how they got caught. You have to do this frequently for probably several months to develop a getting caught habit ... then she might surprise you and want to be caught .. Use this long lead to short longe her with and just work her and have her come to you while longeing her ... just mess with her mind and make her like it .. lol Bucket training with all the things above ... have a neck band on her all the time ... any time you catch her above ... give her a bite out of the bucket .... when she starts coming to the bucket ... let her eat a bite and do not try to catch her just turn and walk away a few steps and get her to following the bucket then start petting and using the neck band to catch her with ... do this even with the halter and drag line on ... While you are doing all of this stuff ... act like you don’t want to catch her .. walk away .. go pet one tied at the fence and give it a bite out of the bucket ... If she wants to act like a nut in a pen and avoid you .... get aggressive and

let her know she can be caught per the above techniques ... you need to start being the boss and then be subtle about it ... lol GOOD LUCK ... plastic neck bands run around $3.. OhMax I had a hard to catch gelding who also had little respect for you on the ground. Once we went to round penning and working on ground respect the catching issue started to get better. I started with a bucket of grain and made sure I kept a non threatening posture, I wouldn’t walk directly at him (because in ththe round pen we were working on getting him OUT of my space) and anytime he took a step towards me I stopped and let him come to me. He was out on 15 acres so if he got amped up and running it was a lost cause unless he ran up into the dry lot to the barn. The bucket stopped having grain and started having treats, then it was empty and I hand fed him the treat, then the bucket went away and eventually sometimes there was a treat sometimes there wasn’t. Nita Good suggestions above. You could also try this: set aside a day to work

with her where you can walk out to her, give treats or feed (whatever your routine is) put on her halter and after a minute, just take it off and walk away. Do it several times in a day, until she acts like it’s no big deal. You may have to start from square one the next day you do this, depending on how bad she has gotten. Do that until you can walk up, put on the halter (without feed or treats) then give her treats and turn her loose. Let the halter become a signal that she is about to receive her treats. After she catches on, you will have to be proactive with her halter training. There will be days when you go to catch her and she reverts back to the bad behavior. At the *first* sign of hesitation, you will have to be ready to drop everything and do some training with her. That’s the only way to make it stick! Don’t think of it as actually catching her as the goal. Her submitting to you as soon as you ask is your goal.

Mississippi

The 2015-2016 season for Mississippi IBRA was a huge success. The season which began in 2015 with the kickoff of the Kudzu Klassic Series produced by Coldwater Cross at the Marshall County Fairgrounds in Holly Springs, Mississippi were all IBRA Mississippi sanctioned as well as Jack’s Jackpots at the Northwest Multipurpose Arena in Senatobia, Mississippi. Add to that some co Sanctioned shows with Tennessee IBRA in Memphis, and the season was complete. The season ended with a Finale State Show held at Marshall County Fairgrounds in August 2016. Looking into the future, IBRA Mississippi is growing with leaps and bounds. The season runs from August 1st until July 31st with memberships being available on line or at every sanctioned event. Anyone can visit www.IBRA.us for a complete listing of sanctioned barrel races locally and on the national level as well as the Facebook page IBRA Mississippi for all announcements and updates. Sherri Surman, the IBRA Mississippi state director, believes IBRA Mississippi has the best producers and the best arena crews and staff there can be at every event.

Congratulations to all the year- end awards winners and to Kate Quinn who won the Most Improved Youth Rider Buckle sponsored by Hewlett & Dunn Jean and Boot Barn, Halls Feed and Seed, and Monsoon Silver. There were lot of great sponsors who made it possible for the producers to have these sanctioned events: Team Jennine Century 21, Landers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Southaven, Barton Heating and Air, Full Circle Equine Veterinarian Services, Wade INC, State Farm Ryan T England, agent, Van’s Leather Crafts and Tack, John Quinn, Remax, H&R Agripower, Just Horsing around Saddle and Tack, and Wilburn Plumbing. BARREL RACING

Indiana Barrel Racing Futurity Keeps Rolling After 42 Years Troy Crumrine continued his dominance in the 38 entry Indiana Barrel Futurity held at the Hoosier Horse Park in Edinburgh, Indiana. Out of the over 40 years the Futurity has been held, Troy has won eight of them starting in 1993. Troy’s mount this year is an awesome gray gelding, MCM Imasharpguy, sired by A Sharp Frenchman and out of Mulberry Canyon Moon. Troy campaigned Mulberry Canyon Moon most of her barrel racing career, she has winnings of over $350,000. Matt & Bendi Dunn of Missouri own both MCM Imasharpguy and Mulberry Canyon Moon. Matt & Bendi are raising some of the best barrel racing and race horse prospects out there. Second in the average went to Jamie Cagle riding Victorious Dash. Jamie and Jimmie Cagle have a trailer load of really nice horses, both Open and Futurity age.

Craig Brooks came with two really nice mounts and placed in both goes and the average ending up third in the Futurity. Craig is leading the BFA Futurity Year End Points at this time with Heavens Sakes owned by Brad Lieblong.

Youth Champion

BARREL RACING

Saturday’s 4D was super competitive as well with 199 entries. Jimmy Bryant won the 4D riding Cowboy with a time of 14.763. This horse spends most of his time in the winner’s circle and Jimmy does a great job of riding him. Chris Coffey and Streaking Romance ran a close 2nd with a time of 14.875.

Youth Winners

The youth class had 43 competitors racing for the first place prize and the Jim “Otis” Pitcock Memorial buckle. This year’s Youth Champion was Lane Hornberger riding Butlers Policy with a time of 15.091. Overall it was a great weekend that went much better than expected. For over 20 of the 42 years that this futurity committee has put on this show the same people have planned all year and worked all weekend to try and have a

Target Saddle

show that the exhibitors will enjoy and plan on attending every year. This year the week before the show two of those futurity committee people suffered serious horse related injuries and were unable to attend. Bob Jaqua and Vickie Benefiel both were out of commission for the weekend but were with us in spirit. Two 40 year futurity members were also greatly missed. Jeanette Smith had to move to Texas with her family and Mel Daniels passed away not long after the futurity in 2015. They both were missed by everyone. We want to thank some of the people who stepped up to help make the show a success. Lee & Christa Standeford, Wayne Stapleton, Kathy Finn, Todd Adair, Amber Bryant, Christa Conway, Carol Ann Coffey and everyone involved with the Kiss Program. We are very fortunate to be approved by some of the best Barrel Racing Associations out there: BFA, FUTURE FORTUNES, IBRA, KISS, BOTB & NPBA. Thank you to our annual sponsors and the new ones we had this year. Without their generosity there would be no show! A big Thank You goes out to JT International Distributors, Inc. & Tough 1 for donating several of our awards including a Target Saddle that was won by Sheila Jones. Indiana Futurity and QHRAI’s Certified Indiana Bred Program Pr omoting 2nd Car e ers

BARREL RACING

For the past five years the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana has worked with the Indiana Barrel Racing Futurity Association to help with a 2nd career program for Certified Indiana Bred Race Horses. The QHRAI has helped by sponsoring the side pot purse money for Certified Indiana Bred Horses that have had at least one start in a race. Each year there has been an increase in eligible entries that have entered and ran for the added money. Hopefully as word gets out about this great program more people will look into buying a horse that is eligible to run. There are a lot of advantages of taking the route of buying a race prospect, running it at the track as a two year old (and maybe part of their 3 year old year) and then starting it on the barrels as a 2nd career. Besides the excitement that comes with having a race horse, the potential for winning races and large purses with Indiana’s great racing program, people that have went this route also find that most of these horses are very well bred and have been exposed to lots of sights at the race track. These prospects already know how to run and most have the mind set to go on and succeed in another career. The opportunity is not just for the futurity age horses. If a person purchases an older Indiana Certified race horse and then barrel races that horse, the horse would be eligible for QHRAI sponsored money in the Open barrel race at the Indiana Futurity. The 2016 Certified Indiana Bred Futurity winner was Stefanie Duke riding PYC Speedwagon winning $800 for the first. This four year old gelding is also Future Fortunes eligible as he was sired by PYC Paint Your Wagon. Chris Duke ran this gelding at the track his two year old year and he was still small and didn’t show the speed needed for a top race horse so Chris & Stefanie started him on the barrels. Chris showed Tejereta, the Dam of Speedwagon in barrels. Tejereta was the 1994 Indiana Barrel Racing Association Futurity winner. Charlie Peoples was 2nd on Bootylichous winning $400 and Nathan Peoples was 3rd on Jess Smashed Again owned by Mike Reed winning $300 The added Certified Indiana Bred Money for the Open was a close contest. First place went to Nathan Peoples riding Jess Smashed Again owned by Mike Reed was first winning $410 with less than two tenths separating first and fifth. Several of the horses placing in this class were sired by stallions standing at Southern Indiana Equine owned by Amy Youngblood, DVM. Amy also organized and runs the KISS Breeding Program. If interested in any further information about the Certified Indiana Bred Program you can go to www.indianaquarterhorseracing.com and find contact information. Watch for the annual QHRAI Speed Sale in October of each year.

Randy Smith Wins Third Leading Quarter Horse Trainer Title At Indiana Grand Racing & Casino

Horses from Smith’s stable earned 44 wins this season, just two shy of his record of 46 in 2015. Smith also went over the $1 million marker again for the second straight year in purse earnings. He is the only Quarter Horse trainer in the history of Indiana Grand to eclipse that mark. Smith, who races a lot of younger horses, is currently ranked 10th in the nation for wins among all Quarter Horse trainers this season and is among the country’s top 12 in purse earnings.

Photo by Linscott Photography – Smith is joined by his wife, Debbie, along with their youngest daughter, Chelsie Waier, as well as their three granddaughters for the presentation of the Leading Quarter Horse Trainer award for 2016. Making the presentation was Jon Schuster, vice president and general manager, (far right) along with Kevin Greely, director of racing.

“We would like to thank Randy and his team for racing here again this year,” said Jon Schuster, vice president and general manager of racing at Indiana Grand. “He’s had another successful year and we appreciate his participation in our Quarter Horse racing program.” Smith was joined by his wife, Debbie, his youngest daughter, Chelsie Waier, and his three granddaughters in the winner’s circle for the presentation. Pina, Packer Share Honor As Leading Quarter Horse Jockey SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 29, 2016 – It’s been a big year for Quarter Horse jockey Rolando Pina. Earlier this season, he scored his first stakes win aboard Parti Favor and the stakes win was followed up by other stakes wins aboard CB Come Fly With Me and Stinkin Rich. Pina and Berkley Packer tied atop the standings with 28 wins apiece to share the honor as the meet’s top Quarter Horse jockeys for 2016 at Indiana Grand. Pina rode first call for Trainer Joe Davis, who also had a breakout year and finished third in the trainer standings. Pina has been a threat then entire season and has traded the top spot with both Packer and Cesar Esqueda several times. Pina and Packer ended their seasons with 28 wins apiece to equal the record for most wins by a Quarter Horse jockey in one season, which was set in 2013 by Harold Collins. Pina moves into the top 25 all-time

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 29, 2016 – Randy Smith was awarded his third consecutive Leading Quarter Horse Trainer title Saturday, Oct. 29 during the final night of racing for the 2016 racing season. Smith, a native of Broughton, Ill. nearly matched his record setting year of 2015 when he rewrote the record books for most wins by a Quarter Horse trainer in one meet as well as most purse earnings by a Quarter Horse trainer in one season.

“It feels good to win this award,” said the soft spoken Smith. “We started off slow but it picked up. You have to look behind any success to find what makes that happen and you have to have good help. I also appreciate all the owners for our stable. You also have to have good owners to be successful.”

leading Quarter Horse jockeys this year in only his third season of riding at Indiana Grand. “I want to thank Joe Davis and all the owners for this opportunity,” said Pina. “I never thought I would ever be able to do this. It’s been a great year.” Packer, a seasoned rider, spent his second season riding at Indiana Grand. He came into the 2015 meet halfway through the 120day season and immediately started winning races. He rode first call for Leading Quarter Horse trainer Randy Smith and had several stakes wins during the meet, including wins aboard Beach Cartel, Three-YearOld Quarter Horse of the Year in 2015. The Idaho native plans to return in the spring of 2017 for another season of Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana. Packer left the meet early and was unavailable for the awards ceremony on closing night.

Conway and Duncan, accompanied by members of the QHRAI, attended the event Thursday, Oct. 27 through Sunday, Oct. 30. Duncan scored extremely well on the test to finish second overall and earn an additional $2,000 scholarship from AQHA. Duncan comes from a family involved in performance horses. The 16-year-old has competed in barrel racing in the past but is currently showing in both western pleasure and hunter under saddle. Although she has never been involved in Quarter Horse racing, she seized the opportunity to learn about the business side of racing as well as employment opportunities in the horse industry. “TRIPLE CROWN 2016”

Story and Photos by Steve Heuertz (Unless Noted)

One year after American Pharoah’s triumphant sweep of the Triple Crown, the series began anew with thoughts and hopes that another could become the “Affirmed” to American Pharoah’s “Seattle Slew.” Here is a photographic journey chronicling the events of the 2016 Triple Crown.

Kentucky Derby (G1)

Louisville, Kentucky - Churchill Downs - May 7, 2016 Race 12 - For Three-Year-Olds - 1 1/4 Miles on Dirt $2,000,000 Guaranteed (Available Money $2,391,600) Horse: Nyquist, Bay Colt, by Uncle Mo out of Seeking Gabrielle, by Forestry. The Derby trophy is on display as a full field of 20 horses (and two also eligibles) are entered in the race. Nyquist is installed as the 3-1 favorite from post 13. Exaggerator is the second choice at 8-1 with Creator listed at 10-1. -NBC’s Kenny Rice interviews Doug O’Neill during the post position broadcast. Nyquist’s trainer aims for his second Kentucky Derby win. O’Neill won the 2012 edition with I’ll Have Another. -The undefeated, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and Eclipse winning Juvenile Champion Male, Nyquist, gallops at Churchill Downs two days before the Derby. Nyquist became consensus favorite after his dominating win in the Florida Derby (G1) over the previously unbeaten, Mohaymen. -Nyquist poses after his morning bath. -The Triple Crown leaves Louisville, Kentucky and moves to Baltimore, Maryland and the home turf of 10-year-old, Ben’s Cat. -Clouds move over Belmont Park. The weather was beautiful all day but the forecast called for possible rain near post time for the Belmont Stakes. -With the defection of Nyquist from the Belmont Stakes (the Derby winner spiked a fever shortly after the Preakness), Exaggerator was made the 9-5 favorite while his fellow Derby contender, Creator (who skipped the Preakness), was listed at 10-1. Creator won by the smallest of margins, a nose over the very game Destin. -Kent Desormeaux and Exaggerator are disappointed in the outcome. -The Triple Crown ended with three different horses winning each race. While no Triple Crown was won, the rain passed over Belmont Park and left a lone rainbow, hovering in the sky. At the end of the rainbow were the painted silks of Zayat Stables, underneath a gazebo in the Belmont infield. After the Kentucky Derby many believed the undefeated Nyquist had the potential to win the Triple Crown, but the subsequent weeks reminded us of how difficult the task remains and how special one must be to accomplish it. One year earlier, American Pharoah was exactly that, a treasure for all of racing, far greater than any pot of gold.

Steve Heuertz Bio

It started with a horse named Cowboy. Disregarded and discounted, this nine-year-old Red Dun Quarter Horse left his life as a ranch horse in South Dakota and ventured a new path into the life of Steve Heuertz in 2004. Shortly thereafter, a bond was formed that fully catapulted Steve into the world of the horse where he became fascinated with the wonderful capabilities of this majestic animal. Of particular interest were the speed, endurance and competitive spirit demonstrated by the equine heroes within the sport of Thoroughbred Racing. Although initially satisfied with observing from afar, Steve became increasingly captivated by the sport and turned toward capturing the splendor of racing via his other passion, photography. The result was a recipe where he could combine his great love for horses, racing and photography into one harmonious blend that was greater than the sum of its parts. Since then, racing has taken Steve across the country to such wonderful places as Saratoga Race Course, Churchill Downs, Santa Anita Park, Pimlico Race Course, Belmont Park, Keeneland and Hooiser Park. During these travels, Steve has been fortunate to witness and photograph equally wonderful races such as the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes (racing’s famed Triple Crown) as well as the Travers Steve Heuertz; Stakes, Santa Anita Derby, Indiana Derby, SteSteve’s horse and phen Foster Handicap and Breeders’ Cup, among loyal friend, Cowboy, a others. However, residing in the Chicago suburb 20-year-old, Red Dun of St. Charles, IL, Steve regularly frequents ArQuarter Horse lington Park and Hawthorne Race Course where he has enjoyed capturing magnificent races like the Arlington Million and Hawthorne Gold Cup. Today, Steve’s passion for horses, racing and photography is like a fire that continues to be stoked. While either behind the lens capturing the thrill of a Grade 1 race or in the saddle loping around a field with Cowboy, Steve as learned to operate under the simple truth that the more he is able to involve the horse in his life, the happier his days become.

We had some more catching up to do - see this month we’ll feature a couple teens in Teen Corral and reminisce some more about summer with Clint.

YOUTH

I hope everyone had a Happy Holidays! This month my interview is with Andee. I left my pitchfork at the trailer and borrowed hers all weekend... always good to have nice stall neighbors at shows. What a very nice family.

The only person you should be better than is the person you were yesterday.

Horses: I have four horses, they are all a huge blessing to me. My first horse is Banjo. She is 8 years old. She is very spoiled and would live in the house if you let her! One of her quirks is she hates being alone and she doesn’t like it when she isn’t getting the attention she wants! She is a chestnut but stays dirty!! My second horse is Jae, she is 7 years old. She is also very spoiled and loves to please. Her quirks are she doesn’t like people touching her face, but we are working on that. Other then that, she is very laid back and cool! She is a Perlino and stays dirty as well!!

YOUTH

My third horse is Fame, he is 3 years old. He is a big baby, a gentle giant! I haven’t really had him long enough to know his quirks but as far as I know he doesn’t have any right now. He is a palomino and cute as can be!! My fourth and final horse is Solo! He is 20 years old and is a retired old man! His quirks are he hates rocks because they hurt his feet and he likes to buck if you spur him, but he’s too old to actually throw someone off!! He is a sorrel and likes to lay down! Accomplishments: I have put a lot of time and hours in my horses. I have built them up and trained them to be good athletes and I am very proud of them and their accomplishments. They have won me many checks, awards and tack such as breast collars, headstalls, and even a saddle.

Teen Corral w/ Clint Van The dream is free, The hustle is sold separately. YOUTH

Keep warm out there! This month I also interviewed...

Madison Sandra Schloemer Parents: Doug and Sharrie Schloemer. My dad is an attorney that coowns a firm (Poston, Seifried & Schloemer) in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky with two partners, and my mom works as an ER Registrar at Cincinnati Children’s. Siblings: I have an older half-brother Justin Smith who is 37, and a younger sister, McKayla Schloemer who is 17. Mentor: My mentor as I was growing up around horses and learning to train was Ralph Adams. I spent HOURS leaning on round pen fences just watching him work with horses, and when it was my turn to be inside the round pen, he was right there with me, always watching and steering me in the right direction. I am so unbelievably grateful for everything he has taught me. Do family members ride?: My mom is equally as passionate about horses as me. My sister enjoyed riding as well, just not quite as much as the two of us! My dad has never been a horse man. However we were always able to get him on a horse a couple times a year.

Name: Madison Sandra Schloemer Age: 18 School: Batesville High School Class of 2016 College: I will be attending The University of Findlay in the fall to pursue a double major in Pre-Physical Therapy and English Equestrian Studies with an eventing emphasis. My equine major requires me to spend 3 hours a day, 5 days a week, in the barn, as well as learning in a classroom setting. Classes and riding classes are all very similar during freshman and sophomore year, but in my final two years of studying I will have the choice of focusing on either training horses or training people. I have gone back and forth on this decision, but as of now I believe I will go the route of becoming a riding instructor. Additionally, I am also very interested in becoming a part of the competitive eventing team at the university.

Page 34

Horses: My family has sold our horse farm and all of our horses in the past year in preparation for my sister and I attending college. But when we did have horses, my personal horses were: Rio, a 14.3hh grey Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse that we unfortunately had to euthanize when he was only 8 years old, due to chronic and extremely persistent “tying up” episodes. Rio was an incredible horse, even though he was a “gaited” horse he also had the 4 normal gaits, and I took full advantage of this. Rio could perform some lateral movements as well as flying lead changes. He was so sweet, gentle, and intelligent. I still miss him! Moose, a 16.2hh 6 year old dark bay Paint with a blaze and blue eyes. I named him Moose for his massive size! Moose was an incredibly flighty and nervous horse that presented a huge challenge for me, once when I was watching Ralph work with him in the round pen, he got scared and literally jumped the fence! Nonetheless, Moose taught me so much about the importance of taking the time it takes, and the importance of earning trust. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him. Cisco, an 14.3hh 8 year bay old Quarter Horse. We called Cisco Houdini because he literally escaped everything. Once he even got out of a round pen! That’s actually how I got Cisco, he escaped from his owner’s field and made his way to my family’s property. When I contacted the owner I discovered they were having lots of behavioral problems with Cisco and were very interested in selling. I ended up paying $200 when they were asking $2000! My plan was to retrain Cisco and sell him for profit, however I completely fell in love with this horse and had to keep him for my own.

TEEN CORRAL

w/Clint Van

YOUTH

Hobbies: My hobbies outside of horses and riding are singing, acting, and working out. What did you do with your horses?: My family was very into trail riding and I really enjoyed that as well! However, as soon as I was capable of training and breaking horses, I found that working with young or “problem” horses is where my true passion lies. I broke my first horse, Palmer, at the age of 16. He was probably not the best choice for my very first break, as he was incredibly rude and disrespectful. However Palmer turned out to be a sweet and gentle horse, and I still wish to this day I had bought him instead of sending him back to his owners after I was finished breaking him. I also took dressage and jumping lessons whenever I got the off chance.

Favorites Truck: Dark brown F-150 or 250 with dark

brown and tan interior Trailer: I hope to one day own a Featherlite Movie: This Means War Music: Country Book: Gone With the Wind Food: Graham crackers

Accomplishments/goals: I am very proud of the many behavioral issues I was able to properly address and fix in both old and young horses! I hope this is something I can continue doing in the future. I am also very hopeful to become adept in both dressage and jumping, and garner experience in showing, as this is something I’ve never done. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?: In 10 years, I see myself married and living on a small horse farm of my own, working as a doctor of physical therapy, as well as a riding instructor on the side. Any advice to fellow horse friends?: First and foremost, I would encourage people to never stop believing in their dreams. Never in a million years did I even dream I would be pursuing an equine major; I didn’t think I would even touch a horse again for 10+ years! However my pursuit of an accelerated physical therapy program brought me to Findlay, an institute I truly thought would never be in my reach of attending. It feels like a dream that I will be there in a month, riding incredible horses and learning from the best of the best. Furthermore, I encourage people to understand that there is ALWAYS room to learn. I jump at every opportunity to watch talented people work with horses and learn from others. Working with horses is difficult, and there will always be more to learn, and new things to try.

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

By Christa Conway

Saying Goodbye Tomorrow morning is going to be hard. As I write this I am also texting back and forth with my vet about our appointment tomorrow. Most of the times when he stops in it is for basic maintenance, well care for our family’s horses or for an ultrasound on a broodmare, maybe checking a newborn foal. Not this time. This is a day I have been dreading for many years. I am overwhelmed with feelings of thankfulness and sadness all rolled into one of honor and responsibility. Tomorrow I have to say goodbye to a beloved horse. This has been one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. I do not take it lightly and was hoping it wouldn’t come to this. It would have been so much easier if he had went on his own, but that is not the case. I have lost horses in the past and even had to put a few down for reasons that were undeniable. Some have been much harder than others and I still feel the tears well up when I think about them. This one will be one of those that I won’t be able to talk about for a long time (if not forever) without emotions overtaking me. Lucks Bold Story, aka “Lucky” is one of those horses that has left a huge imprint on my heart and on my life. I could go on for hours about the rodeos and the barrel races he won with my grandpa, my mom, me and my daughter. That’s right, four generations - not to mention some other lucky people that got to ride him.

He moves a lot slower now, when he walks drags his toes. He takes his sweet time wherever he goes. The sorrel hairs outnumbered, gray hairs take their place All over his soft muzzle and on his sweet face. From his kind eyes to his tail, age is starting to show, But I’ll never tell and he doesn’t know.

My grandpa bought him as a yearling. He carried my grandpa to futurity checks, mom to derby checks and me to the International Finals Rodeo.

I wonder if he still thinks he can run, If he thinks about rodeos and the races he won.

I have precious memories of my daughter (at three years old) leading him around the yard like a big dog. He was crazy about her and she was him.

He used to be one of the toughest around, Winning came natural for him, so we found.

We sold him to a youth rider with the promise of a return to our farm someday for our kids and then retirement with us.

He won at the barrel races and at the horse shows, He shined when he raced at the big rodeos.

He continued to win and then returned home when my daughter was eight. I remember her flying through the alley and I was yelling “slow him down!” A friend walked by as I yelled and said, “Mom, it’s a barrel RACE!”

We won buckles and saddles, he was such a great mount, So many great memories, too many to count.

He taught her how to go fast, but he also taught her how to be responsible. He didn’t have the best legs and she learned how to feed him supplements, wrap and mud his legs and take care of him for taking care of her.

He was so very quick and made barrel racing fun, It was his name, but I was the “Lucky” one.

He had a heart bigger than himself and would’ve continued to run if we had asked him. However, we wanted to retire him sound, so we retired him about four years ago. He has been teaching our weanlings manners, keeping our stallion company and sneaking through every open gate on the property ever since. He was never one for letting you love on him, but he loved treats and would sometimes let you scratch under his neck.

INSPIRATION

The years have not been so kind to his knees, They are stiff and a lot bigger than they used to be.

He was one of the prettiest horses I ever got to ride and one of the quickest too. He loved to roll in the biggest mud hole he cold find and he also loved to run barrels in the mud...he was as sure footed as they come. I will be there with him when he takes his last breath. I will be a mess, but I owe him that much. His body has failed him, but his spirit is connected to mine and he needs to know he was loved right up until the end. Will I see him again? Yes, I will.

Page 38

He’d have kept running on heart, but his legs wouldn’t last, He’d have to leave barrel racing as part of his past. What matters more to me than all of the wins, He’ll finish out his time here with all of his friends. So, here on our farm is where he’ll be, Teaching the babies or keeping the stud company. Until that sad day comes when it’s his time… Cause my old friend doesn’t owe me a dime. In honor of “Lucky” – Lucks Bold Story Happy Trails & God Bless! Love in Christ, Christa

On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

THE LITTLE MARE When He walked into the barn She stood there in her stall Not the best looking mare Her frame a bit too small

Anyone could see She loved this cowhand He was her owner You could tell by the brand

At first it appeared She would be put down Then a king come riding up A cowboy hat was His crown

He had saved her life And given her a new home On His green pastures She was free to roam

While He brushed her She never move an inch Calm as she could be Nothing made her flinch

This mare had been wild Running free on the plains Not knowing about a saddle Bridle or reins

He bought her for a price One out of love This kingly cowboy Had been sent from above

When she was turned out Free to run and graze The mare was the object Of the cowboys praise

As He reached down And lifted her hoof She could be trusted Her past was the proof

Then captured in a corral One dark and hellish night Bucking and kicking She put up an awful fight

From that day on The mare never put up a fight For her cowboy Was a heavenly sight

Proverbs 31:30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

One Last (& Most Important) Thought… Read past issues of the Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for ALL of OUR sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day. He defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed - born again! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

No Resolutions - Just Solutions

M

y old buddy, Bob Pavey, used to tell me the first thing you taught a horse to do was to stand still. I can hear him saying, “You can’t let him run, unless you can make him stand.” A countless number of evenings were spent sitting on Ace (who knew how to stand) watching Bob hold a cigarette in one hand and a cold beer in the other while he made a new horse stand where he wanted.

INSPIRATION

One of the finest gentlemen I’ve ever met, Steve Cole, would tell me, “A good horse you ask, you never tell.” Steve has forgotten more about horses than I will ever know. One of the favorite parts of every show was listening to Steve tell stories of great horse he had loved. We spent many a morning sitting outside his motor home with a cup of coffee in hand fighting off the morning chill. In everything she did, Angie Cunningham showed me how to be gentle and tough. Several years ago, I remember talking to her about my son, Taylor, being afraid of her. She asked, “Why in the world would he be afraid of me?” I explained I understood his fear completely. After all, I told

her, “I’m afraid of you, too.” Yet, Angie would do anything for you. They aren’t kids anymore, but a whole bunch of “Youth” riders demonstrated their ability to ride without any fear halfin, half-out, or not in a saddle at all. I may have been half-in, half-out or all the way out, but I always carried fear with me. As I wrote these words, there were ten days left in 2016. I spent some time pondering the past and considering the future. I asked if I wanted to repeat my mistakes or find a new approach to the coming year. Resolutions seem like wishful thinking, not a plan. Solutions are a change achieved in a plan and reached through a process. It’s been a long time since I’ve shared a cold beer and a campfire with Bob. I miss those mornings with Steve Cole listening to him tell stories about days gone by. I still see Angie every once in awhile at the feed store and she still is the unique combination of grace and toughness reserved, I think, for country, farm and horse women. Time has passed and all those kids, including my own, are no longer kids.

However, no matter how old I am, I’m still learning. With the beginning of a new year, the lessons taught by friends about horses are good ones for me. I need to learn to stand. Standing strong, standing firm, standing true, once seem to be lost arts anymore. I need to ask, not tell. Requests go much further than demands whether it’s horses or family, friends, and others. I need to learn to be gently tough and toughly gentle. Most importantly, I need to know when to be which. Change comes when fear is crushed. I can choose to change, but only if I am willing to push through the fear. In this new year, I wish for you the ability to stand; the wisdom to ask and not tell; to know when to be gentle and when to be tough; and to ride through life without fear LivExceptionally, Chris

BGray arks N Bits Bella Hairs are a Sign of Wisdom, Right?

Barks N Bits w/Bella

w/

come to realize it has something to do with the color of the hairs on my face. They are turning a shade of white not unlike the rest of most of my body, but the people say they are gray. I guess these “gray” hairs are associated with dogs (and people) that are...... wiser. I mean, I didn’t get really comfortable with the keyboard and computer until I already had a few gray hairs on my face. If you ask me, I think that the gray hairs brought a sense of self and of confidence.

Last month I mentioned how people were always asking how old I am...you’ll have to check out my website and read last month’s Barks N Bits to find out my answer.

www.barksnbits.com How’s that for a website plug? I will admit that I have been hearing that question asked a lot more lately and I have

I kind of like my gray hairs. They give me character and distinguish me from the other pooches around here. They also get me respect from said pooches as well as the people that live here. I can remember the doberman that used to live here, Sam. She had a lot of gray hairs and was the smartest dog I’ve ever known. Everyone respected her - dogs, people, even cats....I guess it could have had something to do with the fact that she was a vicious looking DOBERMAN...lol! But, she really was a very wise dog.

Flashback with Bella

Sam taught me many things and one of those things was loyalty. She was the most loyal friend to her people family. I always admired that in her and like to think I’ve put some of the things she taught me to use in my life. I wonder if Miss Maybelline looks up to me in the same way. Well, I know she has to look “up” to me...her legs are only three inches long! (I couldn’t resist!!) I’ve learned a lot in my dog years and can tell you that I have and earned every one of those gray hairs. Until next month,

Bella

Part 2 Neighbors..... and Being Neighborly Excerpt from Barks N Bits, Winter 2011

Big Ole’ Duke, the neighbor dog, hasn’t been down in a while. I think his owners got tired of running down here to get him every other day. I’m not sure if I should say this or not, but I guess it can’t hurt since the other dogs around here can’t read. I wouldn’t want them to think I am getting soft - since I am the senior dog around here. But, I have to admit that I kind of miss the big lug. I know last month I complained of him hanging around all the time and all, but he really wasn’t so bad. He kind of kept the three big dogs busy so I could get in some good mousing time out in the barn. Although I don’t miss the Duke droppings....they’re probably not as easy to miss now that the snow has melted. I was right. Annabelle found my Christmas present. It didn’t take her long either. Now my brand new dog bed has been “Annified.” And for those who are wondering what the definition of “Annified” is, it is simple....in one word it means “ruined.” That’s right, she got ahold of it and once again - green stuffing now on the outside of the bed, not the inside. Of course, the one person in the house who finds her in the act would be the one who has also been “Annified.” (Once again - the definition is “ruined” - Annie has ruined her.) In a nutshell - Princess Annabelle has her wrapped around her little paw....so when she was caught with the green stuffing hanging out of her mouth, all she got was an “Awww, Annie, are you being bad? Or do you just want a bed of your own?” OMG!!! (FYI - I text 2 - lol!) Poor little Annablle chews up bed number two for yours truly and then she gets sympathy because she doesn’t have her own bed to chew on. I give up. Did I mention that it is finally warming up a bit here? It is great, I can

actually stand to go outside and stay for a while. It’s nice to get away from the little bark box for longer than what it takes to “do my business.” She usually ends up out there with me when the people go to the barn. It doesn’t take her long to beckon the “Annified” one and she has this one convinced to carry her back to the house whenever she yips. Like she couldn’t use the excercise! It is pitiful. She’ll look at me and say “Watch this” and then give out a little yip. Then, here comes the “Annified one” and it’s “Awwww, Annie, are you cold? Do you want me to take you to the house? You poor little thing.....it’s too muddy out here for you, Princess.....” Then as she picks her up, Annie gives me a “sorry about your luck” look and she’s swooped off to the house. All I can say is “GOOD RIDDENS!” More alone time for me. One thorn temporarily removed from my side, now where is that Duke?

Bella

I could use a distraction for these three big outside dogs so I can get to mousing. Until next month.... Don’t get “Annified”
