LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

M

erry Christmas! I hope this month finds you enjoying the holiday season with family, friends and of course, your horses. I don’t have much room this month so I’ll make it short and sweet.

Be sure to check out the special Summer/Fall Recap that includes beautiful pictures from across the country taken by Steve Heuertz. The photos are AMAZING! This will be our last monthly edition of Horses & Heels. Raquel’s website and blog have grown so much, she needs a clone...we’ll definitly miss her, but she has agreed to drop in with a Holiday Guide for next year, so stay tuned! You can always check out what she’s up to at horsesandheels.com. Until next month.........post pictures of your Christmas tree on our facebook page, share an apple with your horse on Christmas morning.....and remember to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk” We have included a small section of “A Little Barrel Talk” for you this month. Remember to visit www.barrelhorseworld.com to read more Barrel Talk.

Those Who Feed Round Bales & Stall Their Horses AmazingStretch - Veteran Posts: 165 So my horses are stalled at night & turned out during the day on a round bale. When they come in & before they go out they all get grain(varies on the horse). Do you guys feed any hay in their stalls at night? I’m not having any issues with any of their weights- I’m just not sure if I should be giving them hay inside too?

out for their horses, all are fat as mud, they are stalled at night, fed a gallon of grain at night & a gallon of grain in the morning, then turned back out. They also give them each a flake of hay in their stalls at night. I can’t tell a difference in how their horses look and how ours look. All are fat as heck. I really thing the hay in the stalls is so they won’t be bored all night and have something to pick at.

classicpotatochip - Extreme Veteran Posts: 446 I would be giving them something to eat for sure. It gives them an outlet and comforts them, would you want to be locked in a 12x12 with nothing to do? Lots of health reasons to feed them in the stall, too. I use cheap grass hay and slow feed nets.

AmazingStretch Oh good! Then everyone is on the same page as me. I feed 2-3 flakes in their stalls tooBut one of my friends acted like I was nuts when I told her not only were they on the round bale, they get square bales inside too

3canchaser01 - Member Posts: 31 Yes, my barn does feed hay at night too. Runnin < C > - Location: Oklahoma yes Ctrygirl14 - Posts: 3226 Location: MN Yes, mine get hay in their stalls at night too. 2 to 4 flakes depending on time of year and horse. Mine come in around 10 at night and go back out at 6. addysmom821 - Member Posts: 45 Yes they need hay at night as well. CorinthCowgirl - Posts:1833 Location: MS Yes. Mine get alfalfa in their stalls in addition to their bermuda round bale. Runaway - Posts: 1572 Yes, round bale all day and hay in the stall at night also. missroselee - Damn Yankee Posts: 10692 Yes, round bales outside, square bales at night. Horses are grazing animals and it’s healther for them to have something to eat 24/7 when possible. dakota88 - Expert Posts: 2028 Mine have a round bale in the pasture pretty much all the time. They get a gallon of grain a day at night & they stay out. I had somebody ask me if my mare was bred cause she is so fat. But my in-laws keep a round bale of hay

Page 4

Gunner11 - Posts: 1542 Location: N TX RE: dakota88 Just curious how much your gallon of grain weighs? That seems like an awful lot to be feeding...probably why they’re so fat angelica - Posts: 2671 Location: Dallas I keep a round bale inside the barn and just use a pitchfork to pull some off and put it in the stall, cheaper than feeding square bales. Bibliafarm - Location: Florida.. RE: dakota88 you give them hay at night becasue horses are grazing animals and they have to graze or munch on hay to keep gut working properly.. not due to being bored.. (well it may be why You all do it ) but for the horses health they should have something to munch on.. also might weigh the gallon.. to much grain isnt good for them at all. Bar N - Posts: 1210 Location: Cecil, Pa Mine have hay 24/7 unlimited in a stall or turned out and they are on dry lots :) Gunner11 My horse has had to be stalled since April because of tendon surgery, and I rigged up some panels so that I could put a round bale right next to his stall so he can have 24/7 hay :) oija - Posts: 911 Location: Joshua, TX RE: dakota88 “all are fat as mud” I’ve never seen fat mud, but I’d like to.

barrelracingchick16 Posts: 1790 Location: Stillwater, OK Yes. The way horses digestive tracts are set up they are meant to be constantly eating and digesting.. I have a similar routine as you do. Turned out on a round-bale during the day and then they are in their stalls at night. The get grain AM and PM, are out on the roundbale all day, and when I bring them in at night they each get 1 small flake of alfalfa and 1-2 flakes of grass hay. If yours are keeping weight well the first thing I would think about dropping down is the grain--- Roughage is a VERY important aspect of a horses diet and they should have access to good quality forage for a good amount (if not all) of the day. CJE - Posts: 7696 Location: Broxton, Ga I stopped putting out a round bale with mine when I had 2 episodes of colic.......and yes some do with no issues.......but I don’t give them to option to eat all they want as in hay anymore......mine are stalled during the day.....morning grain....noon...soaked alfalfa cubes....evening grain...turn out at night with hay I put out... Bibliafarm RE: CJE one of my mares was like that i couldnt leave her on around bale. shed gorge and id be worried. mbellos11 Yes!! Linda D - Been Blessed Posts: 7389 Lots of hay, no grain. Crowned Image - Posts: 1632 Location: MD just started feeding mine round bales I feed them hay at night in their stalls, enough to stuff their hay feeder full. Some nights they don’t finish it and some nights they do. rockinas I pitch off the round bales in the mornings and my stalled horses have hay at night too. I use the slow feed hay nets in the stalls. And for that matter, the horses that I have in on round bale feeders, we have those hay

nets for round bales, too. I don’t think it is ever a good idea to leave a horse off of hay for hours. They are grazing animals and should have something to pick at all the time. A horse without hay for hours is at risk for developing ulcers and bad habits, as well, that come out of boredom. My horses have constant access to hay and/ or pasture 24/7 and never gorge themselves. They know it’s there all the time, whenever they want it so they actually eat LESS than those that are limit fed and then put on free choice hay. CYA Ranch - Posts: 13943 Location: SD RE: rockinas I agree. I used to pitch hay but got too lazy. The only way I pitch now is if I have 1 that needs the Slim Fast Plan. My horses have access to a big round bale 24/7 in the winter months. They’ll eat for a while and you see them standing in the pasture taking a snooze in the sunshine in the afternoons. Just because its there doesn’t mean they’ll eat it constantly. RnRJack - Posts: 550 Location: Cocoa, FL Mine just switched to daytime turn out since it’s not as hot so they’re in their stalls longer, they get two flakes of alfalfa shoved into slow feeder hay nets (they are grazing on, not binge eating, like nature intended them to) and I also give 1-2 flakes of coastle for busy work. As I’m sure many have said they are natural grazing animals so whether they’re locked up or out all day that is what they should be doing. RE: AmazingStretch People at my barn think I over hay as well, they have called me crazy for giving so much hay and coastle as well!! Mine only eat a very small portion of grain and a large amount of forage like they should! beast19 - Veteran Posts: 229 Mine get rounds outside all day, and hay inside at night. I like them to have hay/pasture at all times. It is healthy for them, keeps them from being as bored, and makes me feel good to know they have hay to munch. They get grain according to their individual needs am and pm. www.barrelhorseworld.com

News IPRA Two Event Cowgirl, Megan RInehart Photo by Riggin Bag Photography

By: Tammie Hiatt Megan Rinehart of Guys, TN hopes to have two chances hearing her name called at IFR44. Qualifying for the barrel racing at IFR42 and in the breakaway roping at IFR43, this is the first time she is looking at dual event qualifications. “The IFR wasn’t even a thought to me earlier in the year. My mare tore a tendon in her left hind leg in the spring and has been out all year. The vet just told me I could start legging her up, so I’m anxious to get back on her,” said Megan. “In June I bought a little bay gelding from a girl in Alabama. I had seen the horse before but didn’t know that much about him. She let me lease him for two weeks to see if I liked him before I bought him. He’s way different from my mare Gracie, who is race bred. Peppy is Peppy San Badger breeding and is only 14.3 hands tall.” “Peppy is a very consistent horse, and I really like that about him. You just point and kick. My mare is a lot harder to ride, you have to ride her into the barrels with two hands, with Peppy, I just need to stay out of his way,” she said. “I really think you could just leave the reins lay on his neck and he would run the pattern.”

“Since I do teach, we have to stay pretty close to home. We try to travel farther over the 4th of July. We usually go to Michigan and this year we went to North Washington, PA.,” said Rinehart.

“The deep ground really gets us since he is so small. He does great in big pens, which really surprised me about him and he likes hard ground,” said Rinehart.

A general membership meeting of the FQHRA was held Saturday at AVS Equine. El Reno, Oklahoma, residents Gary Walker and Butch Wise and Morgan Mill, Texas, resident Ben Hudson were all three in Tallahassee, Florida, this weekend where they were elected to the board of directors of the Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association.

“My breakaway horse is also my back-up barrel horse. I’ve had Cisco since 2005. I got him when I was a sophomore in college to run barrels on. He’s pretty hot blooded so my husband, Mitch, started roping on him to give him something else to do. He’s turned into a good roping horse that I can run barrels on if I need to. I rope better on him than anything else. I’m a left handed roper, so that makes it a little harder,” she said. “I have to say Monticello, IL is my favorite IPRA rodeo. I’ve entered it twice now and have won second both years. This year I won around $1,100 there. The first year I went I was riding Gracie and this year I was riding Peppy. This is my “confidence” rodeo, both times I’ve been on new horses and have done well,” said Megan. “I haven’t roped as well this year as I have before. My passion is running barrels and pampering my barrel horses. I don’t feel that way about my roping or my roping horse,” Megan said. “I like working two events at the rodeos though, it keeps me busy. It’s not demanding physically on me and mentally I know that I have another chance to get a check if one run didn’t go well. I guess my second event is my backup plan.” Rinehart is a high school teacher at Adamsville, TN. “I am the Business Tech teacher. I teach computer apps and web design. I am also the yearbook advisor, so that keeps me pretty busy. I’ve been teaching for 6 years and I like teaching at the high school level. It has its ups and downs, but it accommodates my rodeo schedule, so it’s the best of both worlds.”

“I’m sitting 14th in the barrels and 13th in the breakaway roping. I’m really not nervous about being on the bubble, if I get to the IFR that will be great. I’m going to a few more rodeos this month to try and win a little more. I just found out Mitch has to have surgery on his arm and that may change my travel plans. He’s going to be out of commission for about 6 weeks,” commented Megan. “Considering the IFR wasn’t even on my radar, I’d say it’s been a good year,” said Megan. THREE ELECTED TO FQHRA BOARD

El Reno, Oklahoma, residents Gary Walker and Butch Wise and Morgan Mill, Texas, resident Ben Hudson were all three in Tallahassee, Florida, this weekend where they were elected to the board of directors of the Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association (FQHRA). Walker, Wise and Hudson all three serve on the board of directors of the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association. Wise and Hudson both are long-time directors of the American Quarter Horse Association. FQHRA board member and AQHA director John Shaw, Jr., had nominated Wise and Hudson to the Florida board while FQHRA William (Snuffy) Smith nominated Walker. A general membership meeting of the FQHRA was held Saturday at AVS Equine. That meeting was followed by a meeting of the new board of directors. “I am very impressed by what is going on in Florida,” Wise said after the meeting. “Dr. Fisch (Steve Fisch, president of the FQHRA), this board and the association’s members have done an excellent job of positioning Quarter Horse racing for a solid future in Florida. “The racing at Hialeah is very important to the big national picture in racing. It appears that expansion to other tracks in Florida is going to happen. This association has done an excellent job of working with tracks in Florida and with other horsemen in Florida to ensure that racing is successful here. This is truly one of the brightest spots in racing today. I am pleased that we can be part of it.”

in their life and business practices. “We search for professional horsemen and women that we believe are ambassadors to the community and reflect the equine industry in a positive light. These individuals encourage others to become involved in equine events so that they may recognize the positive rewards and impact that horses can play in their lives,” announced Connie Hill with The Southern Belle and OQHA. “These are individuals who do the right thing even when no one is looking; they serve the equine industry and their communities outside the equine world with a servant’s heart and look to improve the community around them for their fellow man. These individuals place the welfare of the horse above the consideration for winning.” The recipient of the 2013 Living The Mission Award is Clark Bradley. Bradley, who has dedicated his life to helping horse enthusiasts achieve their dreams, is an OQHA Past President and has served for more than 40 years on its Board of Directors. His father, Stretch Bradley, was inducted in 1982 into the Quarter Horse Congress Hall Of Fame. “Clark Bradley,” nominated one of his students, “has been an inspiration not only in the classroom and show arena but also in life. He and his wife have been role models that have served students well when life’s stress creeps up as it does for all of us at one time or another.” Another recalled the Clark home as always open: “He is our surrogate parent.” “While I would not want my name revealed,” penned a Findlay alum and nominator, “I feel moved, compelled, to send this nomination for Clark Bradley. I am a Findlay graduate and there were times in my life

during those years that I made some bad choices. Clark could have given up on me, a lot of people would have, my own family did. He never sugarcoated anything for me. He talked to me like an equal and his experience and wisdom made me the successful professional I am today. I owe my happy marriage, my intact family and my successful training business to the experiences I had from one of the greatest mentors in this industry, Clark Bradley. “He literally changes lives by his involvement in the equine industry.” For Bradley, whose timeless horsemanship earned him several top ten finishes at this year’s Congress, including the Ranch Horse Pleasure reserve championship title, the recognition was completely unexpected. “It was a total surprise to me. We were sitting in the stands during a break in the Masters when my wife, Bonnie, told me to stop for a moment and listen to the announcer. I heard them say, ‘...the recipient is Clark Bradley’ and thought, oh my...” Since 2000, Bradley has coached five University of Findlay teams to the IHSA National Championship and AQHA High Point Western Team Trophy (2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010).

Champion Spotlight

Rather than cram everything into one issue for the 2013 IBRA National Finals we thought it would be nice to recognize each Champion individually. Therefore we will feature one of our champions each month. This issue we congratulate 2013 IBRA National Finals 2D Open Champions Kelly Stewart and Im Hannah Montana! Kelly is no stranger to the winners circle with the IBRA. She has won and placed at numerous Preferred, Super and local IBRA shows (far too many to mention) and has done so from North to South. Running barrels since she was 8 years old it has become second nature. Kelly and her father purchased Hannah as a two year old and had their hands full. “She was probably the wildest horse I have ever got to mess with and break.” Since they accomplished their task there has been no turning back. “She’s very special to me because we almost lost her to colitis right before Ft. Smith as a 5 yr old (she is 7 now). No one was certain that she’d ever race again. My entire family has been ecstatic at how well she has come back. At the IBRA finals Hannah never got a good first barrel, so we were real happy about getting lucky and hitting the 2D like

we did. We got her figured out at Congress and she got back in the Sweeps Finals and did real well.” For her 2D Championship Kelly and Hannah were awarded $2,377, a Pro Rider Saddle with saddle rack, a Carrol Leather Trophy Jacket and a Monsoon Trophy Buckle. Congratulations to Im Hannah Montana and her jockey Kelly Stewart on their success. We look forward to sharing the results of our Thanksgiving show with you next month. Sincerely, Shane Cline

It’s Christmas....

Last month’s fashion section had you covered with gift ideas for just about anyone in your life. Now that we are in December, it’s time to start attending all of those holiday events & parties. I’ve created six looks with different shades of green that are festive & fun.

This first outfit features Old Gringo boots, a simple green shirt & feathered accessories. It’s casual & festive all at the same time. (right) Dress up a sweatshirt with a pair of suede pumps & a green suede bag. The sweatshirt is by Tara Kiwi, it’s a comfortable equestrian must for colder months. (below) Dresses & cowboy boots are always in; if the weather is too cold just throw on some leggings or tights underneath.

hen I was a college professor, I taught a Cultural Awareness class. As part of the curriculum, we talked about the struggle between classes – “the haves” and “the have-nots”.

with my two dogs, Cowboy and Cinch. I was sitting in a folding chair, next to a box truck with giant horses painted on it, at a fairground in rural Indiana. They were some of the best things I’ve tasted in a long time.

I don’t know if I’m getting wiser, but I’d suggest the labels need revisions. The “have and are never happy with what they have” and the “have and no matter what they have they’re happy with what they have” may never catch on, but I think they work.

There was no double stuff, no icing, no “new and improved” and they came in a plain plastic bag. It was just me and my two buddies sharing Nila Wafers. And it was as good as it gets!

It doesn’t matter what you have or don’t have. Contentment doesn’t change what you have. It changes how you feel about you, regardless of the situation, and the rest becomes irrelevant. I’m still trying to embrace it daily, but I know when we learn contentment, the simple things in life truly are the best. Why? Simple, they are simple in what they are!

You may not like Nila Wafers, coffee, hamburgers or walks in the park. You may only eat super-dooper double stuffs colored for the holidays. Starbucks might be the bomb-diggity for you. It may be a $100 filet sizzling all the way to your table at Ruth’s place or nothing. A walk holding hands may only work at a 4-star resort. If any of those are true, and you’re satisfied; then knock yourself out!

Coffee in solitude on the porch is savored more than a “Grande Double Latte Something” for $5 with the masses at Starbucks. A hamburger off the grill shared with friends rivals a filet from Ruth Chris. A walk in a local park holding hands feels like a luxurious vacation in some exotic place.

Only ask this simple question - Is it enough? Life seems to be about “more”, “newer”, “fancier” and “gotta have”.

A few weeks ago, I stopped at Kroger and bought some Nila Wafers. It was the first time in years. No Nabisco for me; just Kroger brand because they were cheaper. I ate them “one for me, one for them style”

LivExceptionally With What You Have Today,

Within us is the power of contentment and it has the power to take us back to loving “more” less and loving life more.

Preparations for Foaling A

s 2013 is about to close out, breeders everywhere begin to prepare for that exciting time of year when all the new foals are born. We have all giving our mares their rhinopneumonitis vaccinations at the prescribed times of 5,7 and 9 months and for those mares that conceived in early February or late January 2013, early December is the time to give these mares their basic prefoaling vaccinations of tetanus, encephalitis, flu, rhinopneumonitis and west nile virus. Depending on the history of the farm on which the foals will be born and how much immunity we want the new foal to get from his dam’s colostrum, the mare may also be vaccinated for strangles, roto virus and botulism. All these vaccines raise the antibody level that will be present in the mare’s colostrum. They should be given four to six weeks before the foal is due to be born. Some of the vaccine protocols involve giving a series of two or more vaccinations given in the prefoaling period so it is important to start the process with the time sequence of each vaccine protocol in mind. Since ingesting the mare’s colostrum is the foal’s only way of obtaining immunity to deadly diseases such as tetanus and eastern encephalitis and diseases that can cause death or at least sickness such as flu, EHV1 or rhinopnemonitis, roto virus, botulism and strangles it is imperative that these vaccinations be given as part of the preparation for foaling. Along with making sure the mare is vaccinated properly we need to make sure she has the proper nutrition during her entire pregnancy but especially in the third trimester which is when most of the growth occurs. It is during the last trimester that the mare has the greatest demand for nutrients. A proper amount of protein, essential vitamins and micronutrients are vitally important to intrauterine growth of the foal and to getting the foal off to a healthy and strong start. Proper nutrition also helps insure that the mare has the body condition to promote adequate milk production and to breed back on foal heat. During early pregnancy the mare has the ability to divert an adequate supply of her own nutrients to the foal but in later pregnancy the demands of the developing fetus cannot be met if the mare is on a marginally adequate or inadequate diet. The nutritional level of the mare can greatly influence the health of the foal at birth. In general the mare should be fed a good quality mare and foal feed along with a good quality hay mixture which meets the protein and calcium/ phosphorous requirements for a gestating mare. An example of this mixture would be an amount equal to 2% of the mare’s body weight with about 33% We would like to help you get your horse health questions answered by a knowledgeable equine veterinarian. Submit your questions to us via email, we will present them to a qualified veteranarian that specialize in equine health and then publish the question along with the vet’s response in a future issue of The Horse Resource. by Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM to 50% being an excellent quality legume such as alfalfa or perennial peanut hay. In those ratios the correct calcium/ phosphorous ratios are kept intact and the protein level is high enough to provide for growth of the fetus. Not only are total amounts of certain nutrients important but the ratios of the nutrients to each other are just as important. These ratios can come into play preventing such developmental orthopedic diseases such as OCD.

The next step is to have the mare at the farm where she will foal at least four weeks prior to foaling. This allows her to build colostral immunity to the germs at the farm. About two weeks before her due date make sure that if she has a caslick’s surgery that the caslick’s is taken out. This will prevent her from tearing her reproductive tract during the foaling process. This is about the time we install a foal alarm and start monitoring her for birth of the foal. The foal alert allows us to be at the mare’s side within two minutes of the time the birth process begins. Assuming the birth is normal, the foal needs to nurse within three hours and the placenta needs to be passed within four hours of birth. The foal’s navel is dipped into 25% chlorhexidene solution every few hours until it dries up. An IgG antibody level is determined from a blood sample from the foal at 24 hours of age. If the antibody level is too low we give the foal hyperimmune plasma to get the antibody levels to the correct levels. In order to give the mare her best chance of conceiving on foal heat, we give the mare oxytocin every few hours post-delivery to help expel any blood and contamination in her uterus from the foaling process. About 48 hours post foaling a 5 liter uterine flush with lactated ringers solution helps clean the uterus and helps it involute to its normal size. Depending on how fast the flushing fluid that comes out of the uterus clears up, the uterus is flushed with 1 to 5 liters of LRS every day to every other day until she is in foal heat. If her delivery was normal and her uterus is normal size and the uterine flush is clean then the mare is bred on foal heat as long as she ovulates on day 10 or later postdelivery. The chances of conception when breeding earlier than on a day 10 ovulation are much less than when the uterus has had at least 10 days to involute. A normal birth, uterine flushes and oxytocin injections are vitally important to getting the mare to conceive on foal heat. If everything goes well, you will have a healthy pregnant mare with a healthy foal by her side when the mare is ultrasounded two weeks later and you will have effectively backed the foaling date up by two weeks for the mare’s 2013 foal. Foaling time is a very exciting time. Attention to details can be the key to having a healthy mare and newborn foal.

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!!! I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays. I am off to Oklahoma City for the BFA futurity. This month I interviewed a couple of “Buckeyes” that I have known for a while.

Doubling The Competition

PEYTON

I graduated from Teay Valley in 2012 and am now going to college at Columbus State College.

My parents do not ride now but they taught me how to ride when I was four.

My name is Justin Theado and I’m nineteen years old and I’m from Mount Sterling, OH. My parents are Tom and Jody Theado.

My mom rode when she was little and my dad was in 4-H, but neither of them ride now. My mom taught me to ride when I was about seven years old.

Page 44

My name is Peyton Theado my parents are Tom and Jody Theado. I’m sixteen years old and I go to Teays Valley High School.

I’ve qualified for the Youth World ever since I stared riding. I also placed second in the second go at the Ohio State Show. I would have a few more accomplishments, but downed barrels have cost me a few! My favorite accomplishment would have to be qualifying and running in the Best of the Best in Ohio.

First Buckles JUSTIN (continued)

My favorite accomplishment was when I won the NBHA Ohio Youth Finals in 2011. I’ve been in the top three for district points numerous times. My favorite show is the Best of the Best charity barrel race in September every year. It’s an amazing cause and probably one of the funnest show to watch since there are so many top notch horses there in a single class. The main horse I’ve rode for eight years now is An Angels Treasure or “Andy.” He’s a 12 year old paint horse that I bought from Bob Hamilton when I was 11. Andy’s one of the fastest paint horses I’ve seen and has one of the biggest hearts, but is a horse who you’ll never win a fight against. A funny thing about him is for three or four years, he would destroy blankets when he would pull them over his head and off his body without breaking a single strap, then paw at it and shake it around until all the stuffing came out! I don’t have many hobbies outside of horses but if I could, I’d probably be big into building performance diesel trucks. My mentor for a few years has been Brad Shirey. Brad is the only person I’ve seen that could get on nearly any horse, and be able to ride it better than anyone. He’s probably the best teacher I’ve ever seen and will never get frustrated with someone, no matter what their skill level is. In ten years, I would like to have a good job, a nice house, a family, and of course some nice horses! Any advice I would give is to even though we all want to win, the main thing is to have fun because there are only a few people out there capable of making a career out of barrel racing, the rest of us should sit back and enjoy it while we can. My favorite food is any kind of steak and my favorite restaurant would definitely be Texas Roadhouse. My favorite move would probably be “Red” with Bruce Willis. A bit I have had good luck with many horses is a short-shank twisted mouthpiece with a rope noseband. Although I re-

PEYTON (CONTINUED)

My favorite horse show would have to be the Best of the Best in Ohio also. It’s a charity barrel race for Team Marley! Marley is a 10 year old girl who has Cerebral Palsy, but let me tell you it doesn’t slow her down! I got to eat breakfast with Marley the day of Best of the Best, I was really nervous to make my run, but after eating with Marley, I felt a whole lot better! I think the whole time we talked and were together we just laughed at everything! It made me realize how lucky to barrel race and ride horses everyday, which sometimes we all take for granted. My run in the Best of the Best meant more to me than any other run I have made because it was all for Marley. I ended up placing 11th, I was really happy with that. The main two horses I ride are Tucker and Martha, they’re both bays, Tucker is 13 and Martha is 5. (Tucker is who I rode in the Best of the Best). Tucker is my good horse and Martha is just coming along. Tucker is crazy if he is in a stall where he can’t see another horse next to him he will climb the walls. Martha she’s pretty normal compared to Tucker! Outside of horses I’m pretty busy in school, I do many things in the FFA, along with being on Student Council, National Honors Society, Teen Institute, and I volunteer at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. I’m a pretty busy person. My mentor would be Brad Shirey, if I ever have problems with my horses he’s always the first person I go to. He can always tell me what I’m doing wrong and help me fix the problem. I learn a lot from just watching him ride horses and how he slow works them. He’s, by far, the person I’ve learned the most from while riding horses. In 10 years I hope to see myself as a doctor or a nurse, I haven’t decided which I want to be yet. My advice to any barrel racer is to always smile after any run you have, you never know who might be watching you, and honestly being mad and beating your horse doesn’t accomplish anything. Also, tell everyone they do good it might just make someone’s day by saying that.

ally don’t mind which kind of truck to have, I’ve really like Dodges just because nothing compares to them once they’re modified! If I had to get a trailer today, I would probably get an older Bloomer or a 4-Star. I’m open to about any kind of music as long as its not anything too wild!

My favorite food is Chipotle, movie The Heat, Bit I don’t have one but usually something light, Truck Dodge, Trailer Bloomer, and Music I don’t really have a favorite

Since it’s the Christmas season, I’m probably going to be asking for some soft-ride boots for Andy! The only real family traditions we have are spending Christmas Eve with my dad’s family and spending Christmas Day with my mom, dad, sister, and now my girlfriend of one-year, Miranda!

I live in Mount Sterling, Ohio and for Christmas I want clothes or money I love to shop! Every Christmas Day my family and I go to a movie and every Christmas eve we all get together as a family and celebrate at my uncle John’s. I would just like to thank my parents, my family and every who has ever helped me or supported me in barrel racing, it really does mean a lot to me!

Be proud Be fair Be fast Enjoy the holidays!!! Clint www.clintvanvolkenburgh.bodybyvi.com Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Rodeo News from the

Indiana High School Rodeo Association

The high school rodeo association has many events for guys and gals. This is one of the many aspects that makes rodeo so unique from other competitions. There are six main events for the gals; Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Goat Tying, Breakaway Calf Roping, Team Roping, Cutting, and Shooting. The guys have many events also; Bull Riding, Saddle-Bronc and Bareback, Bull Dogging, Calf Roping, Team Roping, Cutting, and Shooting. The Cutting and Shooting are unique events in the NHSRA. While these are not held at a weekend rodeos, just like the other events, the top four qualify for the National Finals. There are many scholarship opportunities that exist in High School Rodeo, on a state and national level. If you are interested in rodeoing in college or on a collegiate team, this would be a wonderful opportunity to get your name out there.

ant to rodeo but think you can’t? Think again! Durning many of my travels and talking to people about high school rodeo, I have found that many do not know how easy it is to get

Our season starts in August. We usually have a break during December, January, and February, and start up again in March or April. We rodeo 8-10 weekends per season, and points are awarded based upon the competitors placing. These points are cumulative throughout the season. Our state finals is in June. At the end of that weekend, our top four competitors in each event qualify to compete at the National Finals Rodeo (2012-2014 is held in Rock Springs, Wyoming). Nationals is a blast. You meet so many people, and make so many life long friendships during that week. Coincidently, you won’t find harder competition anywhere among this age group. You have the best of the best from 48 states, Canada, and Australia.

Almost every state in the U.S. has a High School Rodeo Team. Even if you’re not in high school yet, there are many other associations for you. Here in Indiana we have an association for almost every age level, Preschool to 12th grade. The Southern Indiana Junior Rodeo Runs Preschool to 8th grade, as does the Indiana Junior Rodeo Association. There is also a National Junior High School Rodeo Association for 6th to 8th graders. This association is run through the National High School Rodeo Association, and has its own National Finals. Rodeo is right here at your fingertips. The friendships you make and the experiences you have make high school rodeo unique and worthwhile. Jessie Hoagland IHSRA Student Secretary

s the year comes to a close, we find ourselves in the middle of the 2013-2014 rodeo season. Our IJRA banquet will be held at the end of January, but I thought this month would be a good time to recognize our 2012-2013 year end All-Around and Event Champions. The top four members listed in each event had the opportunity to compete at the State Finals as well as win year end awards for their placings. All of our members had a great season and we are excited to see what the new season holds for all of you! Our winter break is a great time to set new goals, work on new skills, and practice when you can.

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

Once Saved, Always Saved?

With it being the Christmas season, I really wanted to share something to do with the birth of Jesus and the prophecies that He fulfilled.....but God had other plans.

Repenting and confessing are a requirement for forgiveness. This is our part and then the mercy flows. If we aren’t sorrowful then.............

I was included in some great facebook conversation the other day and felt compelled to share it with all of you.

Becky Morehouse Boll Well, Amy,I am Catholic, so you know my opinion will differ, lol, but you know I love you, and respect you and your unwavering love of our Lord! This is what I am taught. Jesus says in Mark 13:13 that IF WE ENDURE TO THE END, we WILL BE SAVED (future tense, not past). Paul says we WILL be saved (future tense, not past) by fire on the day of our judgment in 1 Corinthians 3:15.

We’ve taken up some extra room this month but hope you’ll take the time to read the opinions of these folks. And remember, this isn’t meant to cause any arguments, just some great views shared in love. (Thank you, Amy Laymon for a great topic!) Amy Laymon Recently I have had two short discussions with some of my close friends. About salvation and falling from grace. My convictions say once saved always saved and some of us do wrong and back slide or maybe our relationship with Christ is not what it ought to be but you are adopted into the family of God and you cannot be unadopted so to speak! Many people I know say no you can fall from grace and if your not living for the Lord, if you would perish, you would be eternally separated. Then where is the fine line of falling from grace? And also I feel if you think that you can fall then when Jesus said “it is finished” then you are taking away from what HE did. I really think either you are saved or not. I know you bear fruit if you are saved and for the longest time I did not and I still have a long way to go. I would love to hear others thoughts on this. And would be a good discussion... share scripture too. Beverly Read We ALL risk falling from grace. Keeping our soul, heart, mind pure is our part of the saving. Anyone can turn from what God intended even though we ‘believe’ in him. It is a daily intention of living with Him as our priority. Of course God’s love and mercy are endless and all the more reason to not turn from those graces by our willful and wrongful acts. Nicole Davis Your correct. We all backslide even a little. That’s where Mercy comes in. Beverly Read Of course we don’t earn salvation...it is a gift. But it is a gift given to the humble of heart... not the proud. Believing is ONLY the first step.

Page 50

Christa Conway I believe once saved, always saved. That being said, if you are really truly saved and to put in simple terms “Jesus is in your heart,” then conviction will be present when making choices against God’s will. The flesh can suppress the convictions, but we always have a choice and we all sin - even after we’re saved. I agree, Amy, who is to say where the line is? As Nicole said, that is where Mercy comes in. The prodigal son was still a son in the father’s eyes. The father was waiting for the son’s return to include him, not to have him earn his place back at the father’s table. Just my thoughts:) Lindsay Devoll I don’t believe you can “fall” from grace in an unintentional manner just by messing up. But I do believe you can choose to lose your salvation if you CHOOSE to turn and purposely reject Christ and go another way. This doesn’t mean like falling into addiction to drugs or alcohol, or even dealing with some really ugly things. If we lost it when we got into porno or drugs or alcohol or anything that we consider “really bad” then the Holy Spirit wouldn’t be able to bring conviction. But He does and He helps us out of those traps set by satan. However, if we at some point, purposely choose to renounce our salvation and love sin more than God then yes, we are seperating ourselves from Him and will continue to be seperated for eternity if we die in that state. It’s a fine line, but it has to do with the heart. We can’t earn salvation by good deeds, therefore we can’t lose it by bad deeds. It was given to use freely when we were already in sin and didn’t deserve it. But you still have to choose to receive it, therefore you can also choose to deny it.

w/ Christa Conway

I hope that makes sense A lot of people spend their lives worrying about the surety of their salvation. I mess up almost daily. God’s grace covers all. The Bible tells us that Love covers a multitude of sins. That verse has more than one meaning but it’s most powerful is that Love is God and He has covered our sin. Beverly Read Agree Becky and Christa....On Christa’s nothing we can do earns our salvation as it is a gift...but I do know keeping the heart loving that the Lord looks upon to give mercy to is a full time job for me lol. The Prodigal’s earning was his’repentence’. Becky Morehouse Boll James 2:24 PLAINLY says - You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. Matthew 5:16 commands us all to do good works as a way to let our light shine before men, so as to give glory to God. In Matthew 25, at the final judgment, only the people who performed good works got into heaven (Matthew 25:31-46). The people who did not were banished into hell. In those verses, Jesus said that whatever we do for the least of our brethren, we do to HIM! Matthew 7:21 says “Not every one who says to me, `Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (In other words, one has to do the good works prescribed in Matthew 25:31-46!) In the book of James, God declares through Scripture that faith without works is dead (James 2:14-17). Who wants dead faith? Dead faith is no faith at all. True faith in Jesus has good works embedded in it. Paul says that scripture makes you complete by equipping

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

you for every good work (2 Timothy 3:1617). Paul also says in Colossians 1:10 that good works are the fruit of our faith; This is so important because Jesus cursed the fig tree in Matthew 21:19 because it did not bear any fruit, and in Matthew 7:19 Jesus says that every tree that does not bear good fruit is to be cut down AND THROWN INTO THE FIRE. Jesus says that we will do greater works than He did (John 14:12). The only useless kind of works are old Jewish works of the law (Galatians 3:10), like circumcision, ritual hand washing, and dietary laws. These useless works of the law are certainly not good works, which we have to do as a result of our faith in Jesus Christ, and which we were created for (Ephesians 2:10). Hebrews 10:24 says to stir up one another to “love and good works”, which indicates that love and good works GO TOGETHER. 1 Timothy 6:18 says that the rich are to also be rich in good deeds, so that they can attain heaven. Titus 3:8 says that those who believe in God must do good deeds, because they are excellent and profitable.

Catholics, just like Jesus Christ and his apostles, don’t do good works in order to be saved; rather, we do good works because that is what Jesus expects us to do if we truly have faith in Him. Doing good deeds is the imitation of Christ’s life on earth, who raised the dead, healed the crippled, and made the blind see. St. Paul says that there are three things that abide; faith, hope, and love, and THE GREATEST of these is LOVE, not faith (1 Corinthians 13:13). Faith in Jesus Christ and the resultant good works go together like heat and light from a flame! Pretty hard to separate those 2! Paula Bailey Yaussi This is all good stuff!! Beverly Read Bravo Becky....works has been given a bad rap incorrectly. We are the hands, feet, mouth of Christ. People who are told that all you have to do is Believe are not being told the whole truth. Kimi Brown Royer There is a learning...a maturing. Just because people are FOLLOWERS of CHRIST does not mean they are CONVERTS. Sounds confusing but Christ told Peter....tonight all will be offended. Peter said ....NO WAY, I won’t....I would die before I would deny you!!! Christ replied...YOU WILL DENY ME....3 times before the cock crows. BUT when you are converted...you will strengthen men. (did you catch that? When you are converted???) Peter was a follower...he LOVE Jesus....was zealous for him....but DENIED him 3 times... just like Jesus said he would.

Judas on the other hand betrayed him also... but he was not converted...he killed himself.

There is a lot to be understood about the maturing of a Christian. There are lots who claim to be followers...JUDAS himself was a follower. BUT the heart condition is what is the most important. The flesh will stumble... but if the SPIRIT of GOD is in a person... (Peter received the HOLY SPIRIT) he will be converted. The flesh may sin...but the SPIRIT can not. SO...like Jesus himself...who was born a BABE and had to grow and mature... SO is the FIRST BORN in each of us. There is a time for every season under heaven. GOD gives us this time to mature...if we are following. Becky Morehouse Boll Again, I want to emphasize the vast amount of respect I have for each of these faithful ladies posting. I believe many faiths will be at the tabe! But I love this discussion and sharing of our mutual love of our Lord. I only want to deepen my faith and the faith of those around me! Christa Conway One more quick thought along that line....I also believe that with “true” salvation also comes the conviction and desire to do good works and be a light for Christ as Becky is saying. The Holy Spirit is present and we have to choose to listen....and we should know our Shepherd’s voice. Yes - Good stuff!! Kimi Brown Royer Beverly Read is correct...because even the demons believe but that is not a belief unto Salvation because it does not create obedience...but rebellion. A belief unto Salvation grows a strong desire to live in obedience to the VOICE of the SPIRIT that lives in the TRUE BELIEVER. Amy Laymon I have been taught by reading the bible that works come from salvation it is not part of salvation. We are saved and then the fruit we bear is shown in our works. As well as baptism is a symbol of our new life in Christ not part of salvation. If we are saved then the first act of obedience is baptism and then works are added as we want to serve because of what Christ did. But back to the main point. All sin is sin. Whether big or small. So where is that line where something is bad enough that you lose your salvation???? That is what does not make sense to me. For example. I know someone that is a Christian. They are living for the Lord but maybe they say eat too much (sin) they shop too much and waste money (sin) so have they fallen from grace? Ok, someone is smoking an drinking a little and they are saved

are they really? How perfect do you have to be??? I just don’t get it. To me either you’re saved or you’re not and Jesus covers it or He doesn’t. Good discussion. And I am having this discussion because I struggle with working and not doing enough for the kingdom! With horses my days always turn into long ones with little time to do those extra things Jesus wants us to do. And I try to share my faith, but then days go by where I don’t. And I don’t pray and read my bible enough....not near enough...and I feel stuck in this horrible spot of no growth. And this goes on year after year. Kimi Brown Royer That is what I was meaning about Peter and Judas. BOTH betrayed Christ....but one had the heart of repentance and one did not....but both were followers. Beer....cigs...etc is not different than overeating. IT is legalism that has drawn the line. When the BIBLE says NOTHING IN EXCESS. When we are in Christ...we are FREE INDEED...and every thing should be in moderation...even shopping. BUT...the “church” has a “SIN-O-METER” that they want to use to measure and judge sin. This is the same as the Pharisee’s. BUT....the sin that is most damaging to the church is not those things with they pick and choose to call sin.... but COVETOUSNESS! The little couple that have never drank or smoked may be just as far from GOD because of their covetous lifestyle as those who are blatantly rebellious. God is the only one that can convict us of our TRUE SIN....and it may not be what OTHER people think sin is. Sabrina Miller Christa what a good way to put it. I grew up in the Catholic School system. Went to church every day before school & then walked across the street to school. One morning sitting in the church I was touched by the holly spirit. It is a feeling I will never forget & have never felt again. I was in grade school but let me tell you it was such a joyous high. It’s something that I hope everyone gets the chance to experience. I do not go to church much but attend every cowboy service that we can when we are gone for the weekend. Not sure about the falling from grace but just thought I would share my experience. Becky Morehouse Boll I know what you mean, Amy, but truly, I see your “works” all over the place. Our family for one thing, is part of our vocation. Being moms, and grandmoms. You are doing God’s works! Remember NONE of us are worthy, and that IS where His grace comes in.

Page 51

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

Christa Conway I love the way Kimi broke it down - even the demons believe in Jesus. So it can’t be only about believing. Accepting Him as your saviour is where the change begins. Like with Peter vs Judas. Conviction is then present and leads to repentance. And best part of all - He knows our hearts:) Really enjoying this post, Amy!

(I have spent many an our of weeping over dead horses, pets). Then that wee small voice said..... I know you love them... I gave them to you as joy for your heart..... Use them for ME! I think you do that, Amy, very well good and faithful servant!

that you cannot be reached. But it has to be a complete rejection, not just getting angry or upset with God.

Beverly Read Agree Clarissa.

Becky Morehouse Boll I know exactly what you mean, Sabrina Miller! I had that same feeling as a youth. Most my young life, till I fell away from the sacraments. I went through some ups and downs. Never really “left” the church, just wasn’t living my life in the sacraments, like I had been taught.

Kimi Brown Royer My husband and me were discussing this just yesterday. My husband is always worried that he loves his horses more than People...and that worries him that he loves them more than GOD. He said...I wonder about my LOVE for GOD sometimes because I have such a difficult time LOVING other people.

The Bible speaks of believers as having eternal life now (1 Jn 5:11-13). This proves “once saved, always saved.”

I let the world, take over, and quite frankly, let myself become lazy, where my faith was concerned. I have since renewed my faith life and try not to miss Mass, and started back to regular confessions. I have had many of those youthful Holy Spirit encounters again!! I went to a confirmation retreat as my nieces sponsor. There was a charamatic Priest who laid hands on me. I have never been so enflamed with the Holy Spirit in my life as from that experience! I weeped and walked around glowing for weeks!! I must do that again! But Satan does try to ensnare us, and keep us from the flame. That is why we MUST do works and be diligent every single day! Christa Conway I also understand where you’re coming from Amy...but you need to know that even though I have never met you in person, but you have lifted me up through facebook many times<3 Beverly Read It’s all about the heart...which is what God looks at. I do know that loving some people is truly a ‘work’ for me. I can give away all the riches for the poor that I have but ...if I do not love.... I do love these discussions...thank you ladies! Clarissa Kopchak The translation for salvation is that it is continual. Meaning that it’s a work in progress so if you think just saying the words then living any way you want to then its not a true conversion. My pastor says he hates that phrase “once saved always saved “ because it’s so misleading. We are all sinners and are going to slip sometimes. Beverly Read One day I was in the barn just gazing at my horses and I thought ...do I love them more than God? I knew that was idolotry. Don’t want that to happen. I told God if that is so.. you can wipe them off the face of the earth.

Page 52

Again we fall back into the FLESH because the NATURAL man is opposed to the things of GOD. OUR FLESH will never love the way GOD loves. BUT...we let are to allow GOD to love thu us. It is only when we learn to walk in the SPIRIT that we learn to LOVE people...in spite of how we FEEL about them. Am I making any sense? We live in a BROKEN VESSEL... and that vessel does not know TRUE LOVE. BUT...we have (each and every one of us) a TREASURE that was breathed into us. AND this TREASURE in earthen vessels is what we must submit to because the VESSEL is weak...but the Treasure is the SPIRIT of GOD. WAITING to be conceived of the HOLY SPIRIT. It is there. That is why we have the example of Marriage. WE are EACH the BRIDE...and we are to BIRTH...thru TRAVAIL the TREASURE... which is conceived thru the HOLY SPIRIT and is this TREASURE that is waiting to be BORN. THUS we are BORN AGAIN...of the SPIRIT. Look at what MARY SAID to the ANGEL when he said she would conceive a child...of the HOLY SPIRIT.... Mary said...”BEHOLD THY HANDMAID, DO UNTO ME ACCORDING TO THY WORD.” I can not even write such a phrase without tears... as this is what GOD is waiting to hear from ALL HIS BRIDE. This TREASURE in EARTHEN VESSELS have been giving to us in example after example...and it is waiting...and once it is BIRTHED...the labor pains will be forgotten. Loving others is part of the LABOR PAINS. It is hard...because we are in the FLESH...and we have conflict. BUT when this BIRTH takes place...we learn to LOVE thru the TREASURE. It wants more for us than we can HOPE OR IMAGINE. Joyce Roston I don’t have scripture right now but our pastor teaches that the only way to fall from grace is to reject God and become so hard hearted

Beverly Read Here’s the scripture you were wanting, Amy.

Sometimes Scripture speaks of believers possessing eternal life now, but it also talks about it as something in the future. When eternal life is described as a present possession of Christians, this is an example of what theologians call “realized eschatology.” This means that Christians participate now in a limited way in what they will experience more fully in the Kingdom of God to come. It doesn’t necessarily imply those who have so partaken of the Kingdom and its gifts can’t be lost (Heb 3:14; 6:4-6). The Bible speaks of eternal life as something future (Mt 19:29; Mk 9:43-47; Ti 1:2; 3:7; Jude 21) and based upon our fidelity, by God’s grace, to his commandments (Mt 19:16-17; 25:46; Jn 3:36; Rom 2:6-10; 1 Tm 6:18-19; Jas 1:12; 2 Tm 2:12). Linda Thomison-Fletcher I was born to Mr, and Mrs Fletcher I live by there rules when I live in there home. I will never be born to any other dad and mom. but if I choice to leave and never speak, or see them again. Do I have the right to ask them for anything “NO” but if I did come back would they let me. “YES” remember the Prodigal Son. God dose not turn away from us we do the turning away. Salvation is more then saying “ I believe In God, and I believe Jesus is the Son of God. It’s giving your life to God. Living for God, Talking to God, Listening to God. It a every day thing . So many times people think going down in front and telling the preacher you believe, and getting baptized is all it takes to get to heaven. Will if that is true then after you do that , you can go back to living the way you want saying the things you always say going the places you always go You don’t have to do anything for God. How would that work if you got marred and then you never talked to your spouse again how long would you stay marred. God Loved US so much He gave us His Son. What can we give Him for His Love. AS we do to others we do to God. do we fall short YES dose He still love us Yes. Amy Laymon Linda Thomison-Fletcher great analogy! Food for thought...Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

COW-CAMP CHRISTMAS ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the camp All sure’nuff cowboys, not a single saddle tramp The stock was all fed and handled with care, In hopes that the Ramrod soon would be there; The cowboy a` sleep, the ground for a bed As for a pillow, a saddle was use to rest their head; Cookie in his apron, I in the saddle As the night hawk, had to watch the cattle When out in the herd there was a great clatter, I drew my pistol to see what was the matter. Away to the herd, on my trusty steed Over rocks and cactus, through the tumble-weed

The moon was full, givin much needed light As I topped the hill, the herd was now in sight When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a ol`fat man, tryin` to rustle a steer Ol` fats well he wasn’t much of hand, I knew in a moment he wasn’t ridin` for the brand. When I got to him, said reach for the sky Rustlin` steers is a good way to die Fats said cowboy I not here to steal or fight But I need a few of these steers just for tonight My last stop was the triple 6 spread They took my reindeer but left me my sled

Cowboy I’m in a terrible way I need somthin` to pull my sleigh Ol` fats stood there with tears in his eyes Said these toys have to be delivered by sunrise I said look here fats you need some real hands Boys that can ride throughout the lands Give me that bag and get out of the way Me and the boy will save the day Rode into camp shouted, and called them by name; “Now, Davie! now, Dan! now, Pete and Skip! On, Coy! on Chuck! on Tom, and Rip! Get to your feet, saddle your hoss The Ramrods not here but fats is our boss

Whoop and ride boys, time to cowboy up No time for your morning` cup

So we hit the trail toy deliver the toys Goin` to all of the good girls and boys

Grab you a bag of toys and hit the trail Like the pony express but this ain’t mail

Shouted back at Cookie don’t be rude I know his over weight but give him some food

Fats handed us bags and all a long list He’d been clinchin` it tight in his fist

That’s when I heard fats exclaim, ere we rode out of sight, “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-night.”

Lookin at fats, said now I have a word While we’re out doin` your job, you watch the heard

By: Bro. Brad Vilonia, AR

With that I said boys ride hard and fast Not sure how long ol` fats can last Fats said thanks for savin` the day And next year I’ll avoid the triple 6 when I come this way

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you? But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Merry “Christ”mas to ALL of our readers!

The JHIS, which was created in October 2008, is a database that stores jockeys’ updated medical histories and enables emergency medical personnel at racetracks to instantly access that information in the event of injury. There is no cost for any racetrack or jockey to participate in the JHIS. It can be accessed via a new module of InCompass’ Race Track Operations system. “Baseline concussion testing has become an integral part of any safety regimen in professional and amateur sports alike,” said James L. Gagliano, president and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club. “The

topic was addressed at the International Jockeys’ Health, Safety & Welfare Conference at Monmouth Park in September, and we’ve all read about the testing being done with football players and, most recently, NASCAR drivers. We are pleased to use the platform of the JHIS to offer this service to the riders.” “On behalf of the Jockeys’ Guild and its members, I want to truly thank The Jockey Club for its continued support for the welfare of riders,” said Terry Meyocks, national manager of the Jockeys’ Guild. “It is my hope that every rider will take advantage of this opportunity, and we look forward to working with the tracks and riders to see that it is widely promoted.” The creation and development of the JHIS featured collaboration among InCompass, The Jockey Club Technology Services Inc., the Jockeys’ Guild, Keeneland and Dr. Barry Schumer, Keeneland’s medical director, who developed the original concept and consulted on the

ITOBA NEWS - Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association project. Keeneland is the only track in the country that requires jockeys to sign up for the JHIS. InCompass, a subsidiary of The Jockey Club, plans to acquire a package of these tests, which would be administered free of charge by a medical professional at each track if the rider agrees to enroll in JHIS. “This is a win-win situation for jockeys if ever there was one,” said Dr. Schumer, who has been associated with Keeneland for more than 30 years. “Baseline concussion testing is a crucial component that will help track medical personnel make appropriate return-to-ride assessments following head injuries. Storing this information securely in the jockey’s JHIS medical history makes it accessible whenever and wherever they ride and helps us protect our rider’s immediate and long-term health and welfare.” “Keeneland is proud to be the first racetrack to introduce baseline concussion testing for jockeys, and we are grateful to The Jockey Club and Dr. Schumer for their continued efforts to enhance the safety of our riders,” said Bill Thomason, president and chief executive officer of Keeneland Association. The Jockey Club, founded in 1894 and dedicated to the improvement of Thoroughbred breeding and racing, is the breed registry for North American Thoroughbreds. In fulfillment of its mission, The Jockey Club provides support and leadership on a wide range of important industry initiatives and it serves the information and technology needs of owners, breeders, media, fans and farms, among others. Additional information is available at jockeyclub.com.

Burch to Retire as President of The Jockey Club Technology Services; Palmer Named as Successor Robert A. (Bobby) Burch, who paved the technology path for The Jockey Club and its affiliated companies over the past 29 years, will retire as president of The Jockey Club Technology Services Inc. (TJCTS) at the end of 2013. He will be succeeded by Vice President of Software Development Harold J. Palmer, who has played an integral role with The Jockey Club enterprise for the past 30 years. The announcement was made today by James L. Gagliano, president and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club. Burch will serve as a consultant to The Jockey Club. “It is difficult, if not impossible, to appreciate the size and scope of technological innovation —from the first personal computers in the early 1980s to the high-performance apps of today — that has evolved in the past three decades, and Bobby Burch richly deserves credit for leading those successful and wide-ranging efforts at The Jockey Club,” Gagliano said. “Technical expertise has become a hallmark of The Jockey Club, and his vast experience and deep knowledge will be invaluable as he transitions into a consulting role for us. “In a similar vein, Harold Palmer has a keen understanding of the Thoroughbred landscape and a wealth of experience with virtually every technological change at The Jockey Club over that same period of time, so he is perfectly suited to manage the strategic direction of TJCTS in the years ahead,” Gagliano said.

Burch joined The Jockey Club staff in 1985, was promoted to vice president, Information Technology Group, in 1997, and to president of TJCTS in 2002. Palmer joined The Jockey Club staff in 1983, was promoted to director, Software Development, in 1997, and to vice president, Software Development, in 2002. TJCTS provides technology solutions that encompass software development, technology consulting, and hosting and managed services, and it operates a 24x7 network operations/data center. Formerly known as The Jockey Club’s Information Technology Group, it was repositioned as a wholly owned subsidiary of The Jockey Club in a 2002 restructuring of The Jockey Club companies. In addition to serving the technological needs of The Jockey Club’s Registry, The Jockey Club Information Systems Inc., InCompass Solutions Inc., and Equibase, TJCTS has also provided various forms of technology solutions for clients such as the New York Racing Association, Daily Racing Form, National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Breeders’ Cup Ltd., Keeneland Association, Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau, and Horse Races Now.

Tips For Winter Lot Mud Prevention Winter and the mud comes in the in-between season is right around the corner. Getting your dry lots as “mudproof’’ as possible helps to keep it manageable as the season gets wetter, according to Laurie Cerny, editor and publisher of good-horsekeeping.com. “We just got three inches of rain in 24 hours. You would think my pens would be mud pits, but they’re not. I attribute this to being diligent about picking up manure daily and raking up any uneaten hay,” Cerny says. “I’ve also learned that if you don’t stay on top of these two tasks you’ll regret it once we get into the winter,” she adds. Here are some other tips for keeping mud under control in your pens: •

Don’t feed hay in pens, or if you do: feed only your best hay. When horses eat all of the hay it won’t get mixed in the dirt, which contributes to mud. • Consider feeding hay pellets in pens; horses don’t waste these. • Position your feeders on the highest spot possible in a pen (this will help drainage away from the spot) and move periodically (this will give the spot a rest). • Pick up manure daily. Manure mixed with dirt instantly creates mud when it rains. • Clean up hay and other bedding that gets drug out of run-in stalls and into outdoor lots. • Create drainage pits in your pens and fill with sand in any other low spots (in front of doors and gates). • Monitor eating patterns. We have a horse that likes to push his hay to the run-in opening and then outside. Moving his hay to another spot in the run-in shed prevents him from rolling it outside and into the lot. Barks N Bits

with our favorite Jack Russel Terrier... Bella &

A Diet? Really? Duke is back to his normal self. His sad spell only lasted a few days and now he is back to helping hunt mice in the barn and barking at anything that steps or drives onto the property. One thing I forgot to mention last month was what Duke found out while visiting the animal doctor. I’m not sure, but maybe this is part of the reason he stayed so sad on our return. Duke had to go on a diet. Yep...I said it. Well, actually, the animal doctor said it....I just repeated it. The animal doctor told the lady that Duke needed to lose some weight and the only way to make that happen was a diet. That meant less food for Duke - and Duke likes food!

Miss Maybelline)

Regroup - with the cat food on a higher shelf in the barn we gave it another try. That worked better and after only a week or so we all started to notice a little more pep in Duke’s step - not to mention his slimming waistline. I’ll have to admit, Duke is looking better.

Duke

At first Duke didn’t seem to mind. He was happy to eat his ration and not complain. It only took the lady a couple days to figure out that Duke was helping himself to the cat food to make up the difference.

I did, however, catch him eating the feed that the horses were dropping this morning. I don’t think it’s enough to ruin his diet, but I do think it helps keep him busy and maybe he thinks he’s outsmarting the people. Needless to say, Duke is on his way to a slimmer and healthier Duke in 2014. I wonder what I can do to bring in the new year? Until next month, Thinking of a resolution.....

Good luck!

Mystery Solved..... Our Mystery last month was a photo taken of a trio from the 1999 NBHA World Championships. Steve Cole of Westfield, Indiana knew this cowgirl - her name is Janet Dahlen and the horse is Leas Magic Moon. The pair were named the 1999 NBHA Senior 1D Champions at the NBHA World Championships. Janet is standing with Talmadge Green and Rick Sykes. (Two men who were instrumental in the creation of the NBHA and the beginning of “Divisional” Barrel Racing.) Janet, her husband (Mike) and family have owned and competed on some of the toughest horses in the country over the years. Janet is still actively competeing from her home in Iowa City, Iowa. On a side note, our winner, Steve Cole, was also named NBHA Senior 1D Champion. Congratulations to our winner. For solving our mystery, they will receive their choice of a FREE subscription, a “horsey T-shirt or a “horsey” hat for their prize. For your chance to win one of our prizes, contact us and take a guess to our Mystery of the Month in each issue. Good Luck!

We Need Your Pictures From the Past..... We have almost ran out of photos!.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse business today.
