Important Information for 2013 Regarding Existing Out of Competition Rules

All horses nominated to stake races will be eligible for out of competition testing from the day of nomination. Several drugs were added to Out of Competition Testing for 2011 including Zilpaterol, Ractopamine or any similar agent. If you have any questions about any of these rules, please refer to Indiana Code 71 IAC 8.5-2-5 and 71 IAC 8.5-3-4. You may also contact the Indiana Horse Racing Commission at http://www. in.gov/hrc/ or (317) 233-3120. How This Affects You • Once a horse is nominated to a stake race, he WILL be in the pool of horses used for selection of Out of Competition Testing. • If the owner/trainer has been contacted and notified that their horse has been selected for Out of Competition Testing, that horse must be produced at the track by the time provided by the IHRC. • If the horse is not brought to the race track within the allotted time, the horse will be ineligible to race in Indiana for one year. • The current trainer MUST be named at the time of nomination. If there is a change of trainer at any time, the new information must be forwarded to the Q.H.R.A.I. immediately. • If a nominated horse becomes lame, sick or for any other reason will NOT compete in the trials or finals, he must be officially scratched through the QHRAI (prior to being contacted by IHRC) or he will remain eligible for ALL Out of Competition Rules. • Except for stake races where high money earners are preferred, there will be no refunds of nominations or payments. By signing and submitting this stakes nomination form, the trainer is hereby agreeing to abide by Indiana Horse Racing code. Once this nomination is received by QHRAI, you will receive a reminder for next payment date and a list of nominated horses. Sustaining payments must be submitted on time whether or not you receive this reminder. Nomina¬tions and sustaining payments will be added to the stakes purses. A 20% marketing and administration fee will be withheld from all open stakes nomination and sustaining payments. Late payments - If nomination is missed - double the missed nomination plus the first sustaining payment. Must be postmarked by the first sustaining payment date. Late pay after first sustaining payment is double missed payments plus $5,000 plus 2nd sustaining payment. Must be postmarked by June 1st. No late Nominations or payments accepted after June 1st (or after final sustaining payment date, whichever is earliest).

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

H

ow about this crazy weather? Sixty five degrees in January is normal....if you live in Florida! Definitely not normal if you live in Indiana. To keep the roller coaster of temperatures going, a couple of days it will be back to a high of seventeen. No wonder there are so many people running around sick. Our horses were happy to get their winter blankets off for a few days, although a few took the opportunity to find the biggest mud hole and take a roll. I hope you are all wintering well and that your horses are staying warm and eating good too. We’re gearing up for foaling and breeding season around here at our place, so that means rearranging horses to new stalls and turn outs as well as cleaning and repairing on the barn. Does it ever end? We’re starting to plan our April Events issue, so if you or your local organization need to advertise your event, be sure to contact us for space reservation no later than March 10th. Remember our April issue will be available FREE at several events including the Hoosier Horse Fair. Until next month....bundle up...or not... and Remember to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

Does anyone run their horses without wraps/ boots?

soquinn Posted 2013-01-24 2:24 PM (#6614426) Subject: Does anyone run their horses without wraps/ boots? Elite Veteran Posts: 1151 Location: Southeast Georgia Does anyone run their horses without wraps/ boots? I’m asking because when I work one of my horses at home or practice I only use bell boots but when I’m making a run I use eithe SMB ventech or classic equine boots or polos. He has a tendency to stumble with the leg protection on. I’m wondering if they restrict his movement or he thinks that they do. Has anyone else run across this before? Should I go to an old school splint boot or none or what? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated :)

KylaKris Extreme Veteran Posts: 548 I don’t use boots in the practice pen, but I do when I run. I did have a mare once that would get bogged down real bad in deep ground so she ran without in those situations and did better. I have seen some run without boots or shoes on their horses and they never had a problem. 1left2right Mrs. Txdad Posts: 13497 Location: the fantasy txdad married I never use any boot for everyday and practice runs...and these would be fast practice runs. I do boot all the way around at a race or rodeo...though not sure why. None of my current mounts interfere at all. Makes no sense seeing as they are running just as fast in a practice run but, I make no sense most of the time anyway. In heavy mud/rain I will not boot. They just get really heavy when they get soaked. rachellyn80 Jr. Detective Posts: 6251 Location: Beggs, OK The older gelding that I am rodeo’ing on won’t fire with “real” boots or polos on. He

wears open front eventing boots and bells. Everyone else wears SMB Elites and bells.

melaself Expert Posts: 2596 I don’t use anything for everyday riding and training. But when I run I use leather splint boots and no turn bell boots for impact protection only. And I know for a fact that they hit because I see the marks. But as for using anything for support...I don’t. I believe in conditioning my horses to have strong legs and there is no better support than what God gave them. Lopin’ Leopard Member Posts: 17 Location: Washington I run mine without, he runs better without the restriction. We practice/condition without as well. He’s that in-between size, either they are too small or too large. It’s safer to run without instead of having improper leg protection on. If I had a clumsy enough horse that was knicking himself bad enough to have to wear boots I wouldn’t want to run them. Leg protection doesn’t keep them from tripping. linds Expert Posts: 1722 Location: WI I only use bells at home and will make practice runs or breeze. I always use polos at races, though. If it’s really muddy, I won’t use them on the hind legs. The environment is different and you just never know what’s going to happen. He knows the ground at home. Timber Creek Elite Veteran Posts: 660 Location: SD I had a horse that would run faster if he just had bell boots on then if I had leg wraps on him too. Grippen N Rippen Elite Veteran Posts: 806 Location: KS I won’t unless I have something that is habitually interferring. So most of what I run is bootless. I also feel in most cases if a horse is correct conformationally and you have their

feet balanced correctly - front and back - they will rarely interfere. When I do boot up it’s with a simple splint boot.

Frankie has to have rear polos because he will kick himself in behind during a run. Not often but when he does, he draws blood pretty good.

Priscilla Extreme Veteran Posts: 341 Location: KS I have one that I only run in bell boots, he does not like splint boots, since he doesn’t hit himself I don’t put them on him. My other gelding runs in Iconoclast boots on the front and bell boots, nothing else.

Southtxponygirl A Somebody to Everybody Posts: 16209 Location: Seguin Texas I never run without bells boots, but if the ground is deep I will put on splint boots also.

soquinn Elite Veteran Posts: 1151 Location: Southeast Georgia Thanks guys! I exhibition him & ride other places with only bell boots too so it’s not that he’s used to the dirt at home. He’s also very well shod, that’s a pet peeve of mine. He never interferes, but I’ve just always booted my horses up during runs just in case. I don’t suppose it would hurt to run him in bell boots only. Just paranoid that something will happen. Thanks so much for all of the feedback :) luvinrunnin Creator of the Dunskin Posts: 35554 I often just run in bell boots. Savanna hasn’t put sports boots on Jack in at least a year. Just bell boots. IF your horses’ feet are well balanced and trimmed properly then they ought not interfere or clip unless there is a structural fault. I ran in just bell boots for a while but have been putting sports boots on lately. I have been putting polos on my mom’s horse. He has weird size/shape front legs and I feel he needs them. missroselee Damn Yankee Posts: 9478 Location: Somewhere between raising hell and Amazing Grace I do most everything bare legged until I have a good reason to put something on. Now quite often I will go ahead and use polos on the front based on conditions.

dianeguinn Lady Di Posts: 20288 Location: OK Me. I know the horse in my avatar has boots on, but later decided that I had less injuries before I started using boots, so sold them all and haven’t used boots since 2006. hammer_time Money Eating Baggage Owner Posts: 5911 Location: San Diego for now! I had a pole bending mare that ran best with leather splint boots. I ride my gelding in them as well. ETA: bells ALWAYS. casualdust07 You get what you give Posts: 8581 Location: Texas we had one that ran in overreach boots only. he hated boots. when we bought him we were uncomfortable with it, but he truly hated boots. Lisantwist Sexy Bee Yacht Posts: 5371 Location: WA I see a lot of people mentioning interfering as for their reason to use boots or not. What about support for their suspensory system? I use front and back boots at races and when doing fast work at home. A lot of time at home I will use polos (for fast work). Always bell boots. Pretty quick simple protection.

News BOAH Lifts Piroplasmosis Testing Requirement INDIANAPOLIS (25 January 2013)-The members of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) voted to lift the testing requirement for equine piroplasmosis (EP) at Indiana race tracks, beginning Feb. 1, 2013. Two years ago, in response to a growing number of cases of the disease at thoroughbred and quarter horse race tracks around the country, Board members imposed a testing requirement to protect Indiana’s racing industry. However, since then, awareness of the disease, increased testing and prevention efforts have reduced the number of cases dramatically. Since the risk of acquiring EP has declined, BOAH opted to eliminate the testing requirement in time for this year’s racing season. The change is expected to save race horse owners between $211,250 and $390,000 in testing expenses annually. About Equine Piroplasmosis Equine piroplasmosis is caused by two parasitic organisms, Theileria equi and Babesia caballi. Although, Equine Piroplasmosis is primarily transmitted to horses by ticks, this bloodborne disease has been spread mechanically from animal to animal by contaminated needles. Cases of Equine Piroplasmosis can be mild or acute, depending on the virulence of the parasite. Acutely affected equine can have fever, anemia, jaundiced mucous membranes, swollen abdomens, and labored breathing. Chronic carriers are the source of most infections. The disease is endemic to much of the globe, but not the United States

A New Bandaging Solution For Veterinarians Havana, Florida—January 22, 2013—Sox for Horses, Inc. president Ray Petterson is the kind of horseman who has always tried to steer clear of quick fixes in favor of long term solutions. Instead of introducing chemical repellants onto his horses’ skin to deter biting insects, he began looking at the whole picture and created Summer Whinnys™ socks for horses as a noninvasive barrier against bug bites. Summer Whinnys have since transcended summer fly protection to demonstrate their unique efficacy in wound, sore, and injury protection, especially in hard-to-bandage areas. Veterinarians share with Petterson their stories of wounds and sores resistant to antibiotics, which have benefited from the gentle, natural protection of his horse socks. Wellington, Florida-based Steve Soule, DVM, says, “Leg sores have hit epidemic proportions in southern Florida, where flies never go away. Sores are not responding to antibiotics as well as they used to.” For the 2013 Winter Equestrian Festival season, Dr. Soule will be using Summer Whinnys as specialized ‘breathing barriers’ between flies and equine clients’ sores. More veterinary testimonials can be found on the Sox For Horses website http://soxforhorses.com.

In addition to an even-pressure fit along the leg (essential for long term and multifunctional use), antimicrobial fibers woven into each set of Summer Whinnys™ make them an ideal alternative bandaging application. Antimicrobial fibers incorporated into the yarn, spun specifically for Sox For Horses, are embedded with copper and silver ions, inhibiting the growth of bacteria, fungi, and mold in the socks. “Now, in one sock, you have the barrier against filth and flies so essential to sore, wound, and injury protection. The breathable fibers allow a clean, aerated environment that helps minimize inflammation and infection,” said Petterson. “In the long run, it is more cost effective than other bandaging options that are thrown away after each dressing.” Petterson is humbled by the requests from the veterinary community: “I’ve always believed that Summer Whinnys belong in this part of our horse world. Every possible benefit to horses was taken into consideration when we were inventing these socks, from the yarn fibers offering cool, durable, antimicrobial protection, to the actual construction which had to deliver equal -- but not unnecessary – compression around the leg while allowing freedom of motion for pastern and fetlock joints. Meaning, the socks will not easily be driven or pulled down by ordinary equine activity. “I wanted to do this right the first time, and make a sock that could help veterinarians handle the issues like non-responding summer sores, as well as wounds and injury protection, all year around. In an inexpensive manner, using socks meant to last through multiple uses, fly protection has been addressed in a whole new and effective way. It won’t be long,” he posits, “before more vets refer Summer Whinnys to their clients. Sox For Horses belong in barns for many reasons; as the ultimate in fly protection is just one.” Sox For Horses, Inc. will give veterinarians a free Summer Whinnys sample sock upon request. For unique bandaging situations, Sox For Horses will work with veterinarians to tailor socks with special modifications or knitting designs. Learn more by calling the helpful Sox For Horses staff, (850) 907-5724, or email info@whinnywarmers.com.

Kentucky Equine Survey Releases Initial Findings By Holly Wiemers LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 22, 2013) – Kentucky is home to 242,400 horses and the total value of the state’s equine and equinerelated assets is estimated at $23.4 billion, according to the 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey. The comprehensive statewide survey of all breeds of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules was the first such study since 1977. Conducted between June and October 2012 by the Kentucky field office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, with support and assistance by the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and the Kentucky Horse Council, the survey’s results identified 35,000 equine operations and 1.1 million acres devoted to equine use. The results are a snapshot of the 2011 calendar year. “The value of Kentucky’s equine and equine-related assets, such as land and buildings, is significantly larger than other states for which we have data, and it serves to underscore that Kentucky is the Horse Capital of the World,” said Jill Stowe, UK associate professor in agricultural economics and project lead. “Upcoming economic impact analysis results will provide even more details regarding the importance of the industry to the state’s economy.”

Page 15

News Phase 1 of the study was a statewide survey of equine operations that included an inventory of all breeds of equine, including horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. It included a look at sales, income, expenses and assets of those operations. County-level results from Phase 1 are expected soon. Phase 2 of the project will entail an economic impact analysis of Kentucky’s equine industry. Phase 2 information will be available mid-2013. With regard to the inventory of Kentucky’s equine operations, the study determined that 56 percent are farms or ranches and 30 percent are for personal use, while 3 percent are boarding, training or riding facilities. Breeding operations accounted for 2 percent. The vast majority of horses inventoried were light horses (216,300), followed by donkeys and mules (14,000), ponies (7,000) and draft horses (5,100). Thoroughbreds are the most prevalent breed in the state (54,000), followed by Quarter Horses (42,000), Tennessee Walking Horses (36,000), Saddlebreds (14,000), donkeys, mules and burros, Mountain Horse breeds (12,500) and Standardbreds (9,500). “The University of Kentucky study objectively and scientifically validates the importance of the horse industry to our state. This may well be the most significant body of work ever undertaken to estimate the economic significance of horses to Kentucky,” said Norman K. Luba, executive director of the North American Equine Ranching Information Council. “As horse industry enthusiasts, we are indebted to the University of Kentucky, the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund and the Kentucky Horse Council.” The primary use of the majority of Kentucky’s equines is trail riding/ pleasure (79,500), followed by broodmares (38,000), horses currently idle/not working (33,000), competition/show (24,500), horses currently growing, including yearlings, weanlings and foals (23,000), racing (15,000), work/transportation (12,500), breeding stallions (3,900) and other activities (13,000). “Kentucky’s horse industry is important to a diverse set of people across the Commonwealth, from the 9-year-old 4-H member with her pony to the retired school teacher who just took up trail riding,” said Anna Zinkhon, Kentucky Horse Council Board president. “It is the Kentucky Horse Council’s goal to keep this industry alive and growing. The Kentucky Equine Survey provides us with the numbers, so we’ll know how to develop programs to emphasize strengths as well as work on improving areas of need. It is an important window into the future.” According to the study, the estimated value of the 242,400 equines in Kentucky is about $6.3 billion. In addition, the estimated value of equine-related assets, including land and buildings, vehicles and equipment, feed and supplies and tack and equestrian clothing, is $17.1 billion, bringing the total value of Kentucky’s equine and equine-related assets to $23.4 billion. The total of all equine-related sales and income for equine operations in 2011 was about $1.1 billion. That total came from sales of all equines, estimated to be $521.1 million, and $491 million in income from services provided, including both breeding and non-breeding services such as training, lessons, boarding, farrier, transportation, purses, incentives, etc. The study found that total equine-related expenditures by equine operations in 2011 totaled about $1.2 billion. Capital expenditures by equine operations, including the purchase of equines, real estate and improvements and equipment, were estimated to be $337 million. Operating expenditures, including expenses paid for boarding, feed, bedding,

veterinary, supplies, farrier services, breeding, maintenance and repair, insurance premiums, utilities and fuel, taxes, rent and/or lease, fees and payments, shipping and travel, training and other fees, totaled $839 million. Notably, 77 percent of these operating expenses were spent in Kentucky. “We are pleased that this Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund investment made by the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board will provide benefits to one of our state’s signature industries,” said Roger Thomas, executive director of the Governor’s Office of Agricultural Policy. “The results of this survey will validate the economic benefits of all breeds of equine to Kentucky’s overall economy.” “The College of Agriculture is proud of this project because first and foremost, it represents the best available methods of surveying that universities and government can provide. But the most compelling aspect of this study is that our future policy discussions can be guided by solid numbers. We thank the Kentucky Horse Council and the Governor’s Office of Ag Policy as well as our numerous donors, for recognizing how much the Horse Capital of the World needs a sound foundation for policy decisions,” said Nancy Cox, associate dean for research in UK’s College of Agriculture, Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station director and administrative leader for UK Ag Equine Programs. Funding for the project was provided by the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund, along with the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, the Kentucky Horse Council and numerous other industry organizations and individuals, a complete listing of which can be found on the project’s website. More information about the 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey can be found on the UK Ag Equine Programs website at http://www2.ca.uky. edu/equine/kyequinesurvey or on Kentucky Horse Council’s website at http://www.kentuckyhorse.org/. A copy of the complete Phase 1 results, including county-level breakdowns, will also be posted on both of these websites when they become available.

In 2007, Chris Cox made his first appearance and blew the crowd away with a spectacular performance. In 2008, the competition was neck-and-neck until the moment the winning envelope was opened; then, Cox proved that he was still the best with a repeat win. At the beginning of Winters’ 2009 training session, he explained to the crowd that his training approach was to train his colt as if it were just another day on the ranch. For Winters, this method included riding his colt in the obstacle course and freestyle performance in a halter rather than a bridle and bit. This feat made him the first champion to ride his colt to victory bitless. In 2010, Cameron proved to be more than just a bench warmer by winning the world champion title. Road to the Horse made a game changing decision in 2011 in bringing the Remuda colts from the legendary 6666 Ranch in Guthrie, Texas,

to be paired with the Legends of the horsemanship world. Clinton Anderson, Chris Cox and Pat Parelli stepped into the round pens writing history in this unforgettable competition for the title of World Champion. In the end, it was Cox’s earnest determination that won the judges’ favor and earned him the Road to the Horse Triple Crown; this achievement was undeniable proof that he was the unstoppable champion. In 2012, all plans changed as Tootie expanded her search for the best clinician to the international level. Two competitors from Australia, Guy McLean and Dan James; two competitors from Canada, Jonathan Field and Glenn Stewart; and two competitors from the United States, Cameron and Parelli were selected. McLean and James cleaned house and took the road down under, and thereby proving that nothing could stand in their way, including Bland’s obstacles. In 2013, the Road to the Horse legends will return to celebrate 10 years of exhilarating action. Never before have these competitors met under the same roof at the same time. Road to the Horse International 2012 champions James and McLean will return to defend their title as coltstarting world champions against newcomers Sarah Winters and Obbie Schlom. About Road to the Horse: (March 15-17, 2013- Lexington, Kentucky) Road to the Horse is an exclusive horsemanship experience that combines valuable education and thrilling entertainment! News Upset trial winners earn spots in South Florida Quarter Horse Derby Trials

Ganadores de sendero malestar ganan en South Florida Quarter Horse Trails

HIALEAH, Fla., (January 26, 2013) - Saturday’s four trial races for the South Florida Quarter Horse Derby saw both upset trial winners and favorites make the final list of ten. The Derby, which will be held February 17, covers 440 yards for three-year-olds and up with a purse of $100,000 added. The biggest upset of the trials, which were run as races four through seven on Saturday’s card, was MI ANGELA, who rated the second-fastest of all qualifiers carrying odds of 16-1. The three-year-old Jet Black Patriot filly was ridden by Agustin Silva, who also piloted qualifier JESSARACEAWAY in the sixth race. Mi Angela was bred in Texas by Michael Pohl and is trained by Rolando Almanza. This is her second straight win following her maiden victory at Hialeah on January 12. Mi Angela completed her trial in 21.912 seconds. She is owned by Cesar Rosales.

Hialeah, Fla.

Also surprising bettors was 15-1 upset PANTHER SPEED, who had the third-fastest qualifying time of 21.914 in the day’s fourth race. Guided by Francisco Ramirez, Jr., the daughter of Panther Mountain fought for her lead early and held off hard-fighting JAMES ON THE RUN (whose 21.944-second finish also qualified him for the Derby). Panther Speed comes to the race following a disappointing ninth in the Hialeah Lassie Futurity, during which she was pinched back in her second career start. A homebred for owner Ted Abrams, she is trained by Donnie Strickland. The fastest qualifying time among the four trials was that of CARVERSON, who won the seventh race by an authoritative length over Mi Angela in 21.751 seconds. Carverson’s form got off to a bumpy start when the gray colt bucked his rider in his first start in June at Indiana Downs. Once he learned his job it seems however, that he and trainer Rogelio Martinez haven’t looked back. His record boasts a win in his trial for the Hialeah Laddie Futurity, with a fourth-place finish in the final. Bred by Pazazz Quarterhorses, Ltd., Carverson is owned by Jose Herrera. Jockeys Agustin Silva, Manuel Gutierrez, Freddie Martinez, and Raul Gutierrez will all have their pick of mounts in the Derby, as all four piloted two qualifiers each. The complete list of qualifiers is as follows: 1. CARVERSON, 21.751 seconds. Trained by Rogelio Martinez, ridden by Manuel Gutierrez. 2. MI ANGELA, 21.912 seconds. Trained by Roland Almanza, ridden by Agustin Silva. 3. PANTHER SPEED, 21.914 seconds. Trained by Donnie Strickland, ridden by Francisco Ramirez, Jr. 4. HEY LIST, 21.918 seconds. Trained by Yoani Abreu, ridden by Gerardo Garrido. 5. JAMES ON THE RUN, 21.944 seconds. Trained by Brandon Muniz, ridden by Raul Gutierrez. 6. RAWHIDE CREEK, 21.985 seconds. Trained by John Stinebaugh, ridden by Freddie Martinez. 7. NOMOMONKEYBIZNESS, 22.026 seconds. Trained by Darlene Hay, ridden by Raul Gutierrez. 8. JESSARACEAWAY, 22.048 seconds. Trained by Guillermo Valdiva, ridden by Agustin Silva. 9. HABITS SECRET, 22.130 seconds. Trained by Ricardo Martinez, ridden by Manuel Gutierrez. 10. STREAKIN CARTER, 22.146 seconds. Trained by Brandon Muniz, ridden by Francisco Ramirez, Jr.

CARVERSON, 21.751 segundos. Entranado por Rogelio Martinez, montado por Manuel Gutierrez. 2. MI ANGELA, 21.912 segundos. Entrenado por Rolando Almanza, montado por Agustin Silva. 3. PANTHER SPEED, 21.914 segundos. Entrenado por Donnie Strickland, montado por Francisco Ramirez, Jr,. 4. HEY LIST, 21.918 segundos. Your QHRAI Executive Officers are continuing to meet with our industry partners and key people in the Statehouse!! Look for current Legislative updates to be posted at QHRAI.NET!!

Provides Continuing Education Class for Trainers, and an Owners Profitability Conference in Conjunction with SSA Auction and QHRAI Banquet

T

he Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana was proud to expand the format of the Stallion Service Auction and Annual Awards Banquet at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Indianapolis Airport, this year to a two day event so we could offer a Continuing Education Class for Trainers, and an Owners Profitability Conference on January 4th, the day before our Annual Stallion Service Auction and Awards Banquet. We hosted these two very important meetings to share information with our horsemen. The Trainers seminar we offered was one of several that were offered to trainers in 2012/13 to meet the IHRC requirement of Continuing Education for horsemen wanting to get their trainer’s license in 2013. Dr. Roger Beam, owner of Midwest Equine and Vet Hospital in Trafalgar, Indiana was the guest speaker and discussed topics including Catastrophic Injuries in Race Horses, Joint Treatment in Race Horses, factors to consider before injecting a joint, alternative therapies and Medication Withdrawal Times. Tom Mosley, QHRAI’s Director of Industry Relations discussed Trainer Responsibility when racing in Indiana. The trainers meeting was attended by over 70 horsemen, QHRAI’s largest attended Trainers Seminar to date, and was very well received. Dinner was provided at the conclusion of the Trainers seminar and then

participants returned to the amphitheater for the New Owners Profitability Conference. Horsemen who have been involved in racing as an owner, breeder or trainer from 1 to 40 years attended and many people showed up who are just thinking about getting involved in racing Quarter Horses in Indiana. The over 90 participants in this seminar learned about the racing opportunities that are in Indiana now. Tom Mosley reviewed statistics

Page 26

showing conditions, purse money and awards that are available in 2013 and a summary of these distributions from 2012. Tom also discussed important factors that make a great race horse ranging from genetics to environmental factors, things to consider when purchasing a race horse prospect, and how to get started. Chris Duke, President of QHRAI spoke to the packed room from an owner’s perspective and Dickey Benton and Tom Mosley discussed training race horses from the trainer’s perspective. Factual information is a valuable tool to have and QHRAI is committed to provide information to our horsemen to help make all of us as successful as possible in the nearly 5 Million Dollar Industry right here in Indiana. QHRAI is happy that so many people chose to attend these meetings and based on the interest shown by participants (both new and experienced owners and trainers) and by the questions they asked, it is a great indication of the continuing and new interests developing in one of the fastest growing Quarter Horse racing programs in the world.

Stallions that were not sold on January 5th at the Auction will still be available for purchase until July 1st. Check out the list in this magazine if you are still looking for a great deal on a valuable breeding so you can be eligible for a piece of the money in 2016!! T h i s year ’s Stallion Service Auction holds the record for the most horses sold (80), the most money in sales ($76,000), by far the highest attended auction during the day and during the Banquet and Awards Program Saturday evening. It also holds the record for the most marriage proposals during the event!! Congratulations to Jim Gabbard and Rhonda Harmon! Jim surprised Rhonda by proposing to her “on stage” in front of their Quarter Horse family!! You are great friends and we wish you both the very best of luck.

Guest speaker for the evening was Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM, from Florida. Dr. Fisch is actively involved in the Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association, serving as the President since 2011. He is also the founder and owner of AVS Equine Hospital in Tallahassee where he practices Veterinary medicine.

Day two of the expanded format included a light lunch and social time from 11:00 - 12:00 outside the amphitheater and the re-play of the 2012 Stallion Service Auction Futurity and Derby kicked off the 2013 QHRAI Stallion Service Auction at 12:00 noon. The PACKED amphitheater quieted quickly to watch the start of each race as if it were the first time to see them run, and Tiny’s First Pepsi and Successful Dash each still crossed the finish line first in “their” race. QH racing is truly an EXCITING sport and watching these great races put everyone in the right mindset to start the bidding for the 2013 Stallion Service Auction. And boy did the bidding start and GO STRONG. Auctioneers Ted Begley and Greg Bonfer and Pedigree man Tom Mosley sold 80 stallion services for a total of $76,000 by the time the last hip number was sold at 3:00 pm. You read that right, 80 stallion services bringing $76,000 in three (3) hours!! The high seller of the day was Carters Cartel, $5,500, purchased by Dale Nasby of Greenfield, IN, followed by Bigtime Favorite, $3,900, purchased by Peggy Ann Kent of W Harrision, IN, and Captain Courage, $3,500, purchased by Guadalupe Arevalo of South Bend, IN. Indiana Horsemen heard that the 2013 SSA Futurity and Derby are being run for added money, and they came to the auction so they can plan to be a part of the SSA program in 2016 where the Futurity will likely be over $200,000 and the Derby should be near $100,000.

Dianne Bennett was presented the President’s Award for 2013. QHRAI was proud to induct seven new members and one horse into the 2012 Hall of Fame. Duane Swingley was the MC for the inductions, who was then inducted into the hall of fame himself!! Congratulations to inductees Sterlie Bertram, Roy Eiler, Jerry Goodman, Duane Keiser, Charlie Mullinex, Gene York and Duane Swingley. Congratulations also go to Make Me Rich and his connections as the Horse inducted to the Hall of Fame. The night was enjoyed by this group of people, their families and Quarter Horse friends as they reminisced about fast horses and stories from “some years back”. The 2012 awards were given out, the silent auction came to a close and the night concluded with the Post Parade Party where everyone enjoyed the music of the Roger Brown Band and had a late night pizza party!!

NATIONAL NEWS AND UPDATES Note From the President Hello Barrel Racers!

Let me start by expressing our sincere thanks to all of those who attended our 2013 Futurity and Preferred Show in Murfreesboro, TN. The show was a great success as the futurity entries grew by fifty seven percent from last year. Total entries for the show were up by eleven percent. We seemed to have a lot of contestants happy with the show which is always a plus!

Charity & Contributions

With each preferred show the IBRA selects a charity to support. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be the benefactor of the 2013 Futurity & Preferred Show held in Murfreesboro, TN. “St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, is one of the world’s premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance. No child is denied treatment because of a family’s inability to pay.” IBRA will contribute $500 to the Hospital plus additional monthly contributions in recognition of our event. The Needham’s performed and delivered Gods message to a nice size crowd at the Preferred Show in Murfreesboro. I confirmed in a follow up conversation that they were well supported and they expressed deep gratitude to the IBRA and our members. The IBRA received a request for support from the Kentucky 4-H for an upcoming Equine Festival geared specifically towards youth. We received the following words of thanks from 4-H: “ The Kentucky Equine Youth Festival would like to thank you for your sponsorship of this event. We feel as though programs such as the Youth Festival are vital to preserving the future of the horse industry. Your contribution makes you a Friend of the Festival. With this you receive your organization’s name in the event program and on our webpage. If you have any questions please let me know. Thanks again for your support of the Equine Youth Festival.” -Amy Lawyer

Upcoming Preferred Show

The IBRA will return to Circle G in Lewisburg, OH for our annual Futurity & Preferred Show. The layout will be relatively similar to the show we just concluded in Murfreesboro. $7,500 Added Futurity, $10,000 Guaranteed, plus an additional $2,500 added to the show. The futurity will have an updated payout as follows; payout will be eighty percent, seventy percent of which will pay to the 1D and thirty percent to the 2D. Number of places will depend on entries. In closing I hope that you all make it to your next show safely and return home the same. I am very proud to be a part of an barrel racing organization that gives back to the community and I thank you all for your support! Shane Cline, IBRA President

early 800 entries ran at the Tennessee Miller Coliseum January 18th-20th for the International Barrel Racing Association’s annual Futurity and Preferred Show in Murfreesboro, TN. Over $45,000 was paid out to 136 check winners. Out of all who ran, two riders stood out above the rest. Craig Brooks conquered the Futurity while Jimmy Cagle dominated the Open classes! A four year old filly by the name of RUREADYTODESIGN, or Mia as she is affectionately known, carried Brooks to his 2nd IBRA Futurity Average win. The combo raked in $5,186 for their efforts in the Futurity plus an additional $560 by rolling into Saturdays Open where they placed third. Mia is clearly a talented horse placing ahead of 65 futurity horses in two go rounds. The truly impressive part, however, is that she also placed ahead of 260 horses in Saturday’s Open with her 15.650 rollover and 141 horses on Sunday placing 7th in the Open with her rollover of 15.825. When asked what makes Mia special to him, Brooks had the following to say: “I have always been impressed with the try Mia gives me. I tell people I will always take a horse with heart and try over a horse with a ton of ability that lacks try any day.” 502-239-4000 office 502-239-4100 fax Shane@ibra.us

Page 32

Brooks owns Mia with his Partners Michael and Terri Pitcher of Troutman, NC. “I bought Mia’s dam off the track as a three year old and she was clocking and showing a lot of talent before an injury sidelined her. I decided to keep her as a broodmare because I felt she had showed me enough talent and try that I wanted to see what she would produce. I had rode some horses for Michael and Terri and they had bought a breeding to Designer Red and they were not able to get their mare caught so they asked if they could use my mare and we could just be partners on the foal.” Craig’s success did not end with Mia. His horse Leaving Hot Memories placed 3rd in the first go as well adding another $778 check to his earnings.

Friday & Saturday Open 1D & 2D - Jimmy Cagle

Friday Open 3D - Timothy Butler

Friday Open 4D - Susan Ray While Brooks was the talk of the futurity, Jimmy Cagle set the pace for the weekend. Dashin Live Rockette, typically ridden by Jimmy’s wife Jamie, ran the fastest time of the weekend with a 15.462. The pair won the Open on Friday and Saturday as well as the Masters class. When asked why she wasn’t riding her horse, Jamie laughingly responded, “Its just too cold!.” When it came time to pick up checks, however, Jamie said she wasn’t sure how she was going to pull Jimmy off her horse. The combo picked up $1,949 which includes $160 bonus money for being IBRA Members! As if this wasn’t enough Jimmy and his stand out horse

TWR Dash D Hefa also won the 2D of the Open Friday and Saturday and placed 4th in the Masters class for a combined earnings of $1,210 including bonus money of $120. Cagle continued to rake in the cash placing 1st in the 2D of the Futurity avg. aboard Frenchman’s Cricket and 4th in the 2D of the average on Zanes Zebedee. Barks N Bits w/ Bella

Barks N Bits with our favorite Jack Russel Terrier...

I’ll Hold Down the Fort I don’t recall a time in recent history (in dog years, I suppose) that it has been this cold for this long. Maybe it’s just that I am getting older and don’t appreciate the “crispness” in the air....and maybe it’s just been plain cold. Either way you look at it, below freezing on the thermometer is no place for a short haired dog of 12 pounds. (OK, maybe I exaggerated a bit...I might weigh 13 pounds.) Even with me donning my stylish blue coat - slash- dog blanket, it doesn’t take long for me to get my fill of the chill, if you know what I mean. As a matter of fact, I’d just as soon stay inside while the people (and Freckles - she has a lot more hair than me...) head out to take care of the barn chores and the horses twice a day. I’ve made it clear that a quick trip out to “take care of business” is plenty for me. I can make that happen with a lap of barking around the yard - mostly for the people’s benefit - and a couple deposits to Mother Earth. It isn’t but a

few minutes and I’m jumping on the back porch steps waiting for the door to open and welcome me back into the warmth and comfort of my life as Bella, Her Honorable Jack Russel Queen of the Ranch. My people have figured out that I would rather “hold down the fort” while they bundle up in their layers upon layers of additional clothing to head outside. I mean, it really shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that if the people need three layers of clothing, it’s too cold for me to be out there for long. I have to admit, they are pretty good about understanding “Bella talk,” so when I hear them calling my name while they are all pulling on the coveralls and the Siberian Snow boots, I just give them the “I Ain’t Goin’” stance. They get it. There are those few times that I decide to tag along and ask them for my dog coat - slash blanket. The littlest one likes to be the one to help dress me....go figure.

and Duke with the mousing and the trailing of fresh rabbit tracks. It is a lot of fun. But, the fun doesn’t last long. When the pads of my feet go numb from cold, I have to go find the lady. She really understands “Bella talk” and knows when it’s time to pick me up and warm the footsies. The only bad part about the warming of the footsies is that I have to ride around in the lady’s coat to make it happen. That’s when I have flashbacks of Princess Annabelle and her antics. She did a lot of riding around in coats in her day. I don’t want to be stereotyped as one of those kind of dogs. (You know those lapdogs that people carry around in bags and purses....gag.) For now, I’m spending most of these cold days holding down the fort and keeping the footsies warm on my own.

Bella

Later,

Anyway, on the occasions I decide to take part in the trip outside, I do like to help Freckles

Glitter By Horses & Heels

Welcome to February, I’m very excited to introduce you to something brand new & exciting. It’s actually a very personal project for a sparkly new tack line & me. My sister & I have taken a new venture together. Introducing Glitter by Horses & Heels; Glitter is a new tack line for the individual who wants to stand out in and out of the arena. It’s the ultimate in sparkle & is something new that hasn’t been done before in the equine world.

Glitter For You Glitter For Your Horse Each piece of leather is hand painted with loose glitter to create a look that is brilliant and strong. Pieces can be customized with different colors & designs. There are two different application techniques; solid glitter and glitter wash, which is a more opaque look that is especially suited for tooled leather. Page 40

Glitter It Up "Meet the girl behind Horses & Heels" I’m Raquel; I live out there where the city meets the country. One day I’m wearing stilettos, the next day it’s spurs. I have an obsession with cowboy boots, Christian Louboutin, cosmetics and cooking. I have been riding since I was two-years old, have competed in just about every discipline & now I focus on barrel racing. I love speed & athletic horses, not to mention lots of sparkly things.

Only the finest leather & hardware is used for all round looks, function and quality. You can also have a pair of your old leather or tack painted if you are ready for an updated look. All of the photos are examples of pieces available. Questions? Email raquel@horsesandheels.com Do you have specific outfit/design requests or questions? t’s been a month, how are you doing on your resolutions? I had a couple of practical ones, and so far, I’m doing well.

fairly, we must choose and implement carefully any corrective measures. If not, we endanger our child’s and possibly our own spirit.

I’m sure that there might be some old-fashioned cowboys around, who would disagree, but I believe we can’t truly make a horse do anything. They outweigh us by hundreds of pounds. Their strength is significantly greater than ours. And “size + strength + attitude = immovable object.” At best, even with extreme measures, all we can hope for is to make them more likely to do something, not actually make them do it.

When it comes to my resolutions, my behavior will change when I embrace the principle that positive results of a new choice are more enjoyable than an old choice. Just like our horses must be persuaded to change, we have to be convinced that it’s better to not smoke, eat, drink too much of anything or _______ (insert bad habit here). Whether we focus on new benefits or old detriments, we have to be convinced the new behavior is better than the old habit.

Effective training comes with teaching the consequence of an “undesired choice” is also undesirable, and therefore, the horse chooses to comply. A stubborn horse that refuses to go in a trailer or an arena has to be “reprogrammed” to believe going in the trailer or arena is not as bad as staying outside it. But remember, if we make the consequences too severe or we choose an unreasonable punishment, we may break the spirit of the horse. And once broken, a horse may never find his spirit again. We may relate “training” only to horses, but we are also “training” our children in our homes daily. And I would hope we are constantly “training” ourselves towards improvement. The fundamental precept of all training must be – the reward of good behavior is greater than the “pain” of negative behavior. To enforce that principle affectively and

But, and I believe this is the key, even if we are convinced to change, we will still not change until we want to change! A horse is somewhat simplistic in its outlook. It will do what pleases us because pleasing us brings the horse reward. When the horse wants to do the new behavior, training becomes easier and more productive because all we are teaching is “the how to”, not “the want to” plus “the how to.” Just like our four-footed friends, we will change more effectively and quickly when we want to change. I pray for strength and good results for you as you train your horses and your kids (oh, and yourselves, too) in the coming year. LivExceptionally, Chris

Article By Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM

This month Dr. Fisch answers a question from one of our readers.

We have approximately 20 horses that we keep stalled at night and turn out in pastures/lots during the day. With the cold temperatures we get in the winter, what is the best way to make sure these horses are drinking enough water and how else besides blanketing can we help them to stay warm?

G

etting enough water is essential for the horse’s health during the winter even though they do not sweat as much and need water as much for cooling as they do during the summer. When eating dry hay your horse needs more moisture for digestion than he does when eating grass. The water temperature is important too; if the water is too We would like to help you get your horse health questions answered by a knowledgeable equine veterinarian. Submit your questions to us via email, we will present them to a qualified veteranarian that specialize in equine health and then publish the question along with the vet’s response in a future issue of The Horse Resource. cold the horse may not drink enough and can suffer from impaction colic. Solutions include checking the water often to make sure ice has not formed on it, and breaking the ice if it forms; adding hot water at feeding time to bring the water temperature up to a comfortable temperature (be careful not to make it too hot); insulating your water bucket to keep the water liquid longer. You can do this by placing it in a larger container with insulating material in between and/or adding a tank heater. Always be sure there is no danger of electric shock. Check the water level at each feeding to be sure your horse is drinking.

If you anticipate your horse getting chilled on any given day or night, you can help without blanketing. When he’s truly cold, he’ll shiver. Digesting roughage creates heat. The chewing and biological processing of hay is a good natural body warmer. Feeding hay will usually be enough to raise his temperature and stop the shivering. This must always be good quality hay. It should be without dust or mold. It does not have to be high in protein; the carbohydrates provide the energy, so you don’t need a more expensive legume like alfalfa mix hay. Grass hay is fine. Throwing your horse a few extra flakes of hay on those cold nights, or when it is windy during the day, will go a long way toward helping your horse stay warm during cold weather. Actually intense summer heat is much harder on horses than the cold as long as they have some good hay to munch on and plenty of water to drink.

1st Ohio Cowboy Mounted Shooters Burr..if you reading the Fast Horse Resource and live in the Midwest you would fully understand the phrase, “if you don’t like the weather just wait 7 minutes and it will change!” Two weeks ago we were riding very “stinky” ponies at the park in T-shirts, the next week we had 3-4 inches of rain, and this week it is tough to make ourselves go out of the warm house into the freezing temps to go the barn just to feed and clean stalls. Humm.wonder what it will be next week? Snow???? 1st Ohio’s members and friends are getting ready for the 2012 Year End Banquet to celebrate and reward the “top to bottom” shooters. This festive event gives all of us the opportunity to chat and catch up on what’s been happening since the last 1st Ohio shoot in October. It’s a great excuse to get out of the house and enjoy an evening with friends and extended family with dinner, awards, some dancing and even a photographer for a special memory keepsake. Several clubs in the tri-state area are hosting practice shoots this winter. These practices give us all a chance to help each other with any problems, help us start a new horse and provide an opportunity for anyone interested to check out Cowboy Mounted Shooting. You and your horse get to listen to the gunfire and you may have the opportunity to test your skills at shooting balloons. You can check out what’s going on in your neighborhood by going to www.cowboymountedshooting. com and click on a club near you to find out where and what time. If you are interested in shooting, make the contact and take your horse to practice. Most horses relax much faster if they have a “seasoned horse” buddy next to them on their debut as a shootin’ horse. You will probably be very surprised to find out how quickly most accept the gunfire. The shooters are becoming very famous for their “pot luck socials”, dinners held on some shooting weekends on Saturday night. We all share covered dishes and spend the evening around the campfire enjoying the latest news and of course, the shooting critique for the day! If you have a special signature pot luck receipt to share, send it to me. I’m sharing one with you this month that is really easy to make and bake at home, it travels great and still tastes good heating up in the microwave.

TEEN CORRAL w/Clint Van

Happy Valentines Day Hi, I hope everybody weathered the snows... I don’t want to rub it in, but I went to Florida the day after Christmas and stayed for two weeks in the warm weather.

I spent some time riding my colts and enjoying the sunshine. But, now it’s back to cold Indiana. That means college and work for me too.

Dreaming of warmer weather.....

Crystal Caudill

This month it’s going to be rather short. I interviewed Crystal Caudill from Sunman, Indiana. Crystal is 18 years old and she describes her love for her horse ..(how appropriate for Valentines Day!)

Page 48

TEEN CORRAL w/Clint Van

My favorite arena would be Lone Star Arena in Milan, Indiana. It’s where my love for barrel racing started and it has grown from there. Unfortunatly, rodeos aren’t held there anymore, but since I know the owners I’m able to go there and practice the pattern whenever I want. What I love most about my horse, Sassy Star is that her name matches her personality. When it’s practice time at home, she can be as sassy as can be. If you pay attention to anything else but her, she’ll do anything she can for your attention. When she gets into the arena she loves the roar of the crowd and runs her heart out. When we get back home I can throw my two year old godchild on her back and she’ll follow me around like a puppy dog. She won’t act hyper like she would at a show. She’s a trustworthy mare who will do anything for me.

I ask of her when we run the pattern. She gives it her all. At the end of the run we thank the Lord for the ride we had, decent or not. We come out of the arena with a smile knowing we gave it our all We may not be the best or even close, but we have heart and we love the sport. Happy Valentine’s day! Tight turns..run fast.

What I love most about barrel racing is the connection I have with my horse while we’re running. We love the roar of the crowd and she does anything

Clint

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

December 2012 brought our members together to celebrate our 20112012 IJRA rodeo season. This year we met in Greenfield, Indiana and have the White family to thank for organizing and putting together the event. Thank you Chris Keller for heading up the awards again this year, a job that takes a lot of time, phone calls, and emails. Many IJRA and Board members showed up early to help prepare for the banquet and it didn’t go unnoticed! We would also like to thank John Beals Photography who provided many of the pictures for this article as well as captured a lot of great memories at the banquet. If you didn’t get your pictures at the banquet, John now has a website johnbealsphoto.lifepics. com where you can view his work. Our auction was led by Buddy Lowe who graciously stepped up to help

out. Scott Colby went above and beyond with his amazing horse shoe creations helping members to buy early Christmas gifts for loved ones and also helping IJRA raise $1282.50 at the auction for 2012-2013 year end awards. Thank you everyone who brought a donated item or bid at the auction. Our members received many great awards such as jackets, saddles, buckles, headstalls, saddle pads, backpacks, picture frames and more. We would like to thank the sponsors who supported the kids throughout the season. Please visit our IJRA-Indiana Junior Rodeo Association page to follow us throughout the year as well as to get connected with the great sponsors who support us!

Recipient of the Kenny Steffen/Chad Hittle Award

Thank you Jack Overshiner for capturing the meaning of the KenneySteffen/Chad Hittle Award and for keeping the history of this award available to all. THE KENNY STEFFEN/CHAD HITTLE AWARD IS DEDICATED TO THE LEGACY OF TWO MEN WHO SET A STANDARD DURING THEIR ASSOCIATION WITH THE INDIANA JUNIOR RODEO ASSOCIATION. THEY ARE HONORED EACH YEAR BY THE PRESENTATION OF THE AWARD TO THE COWBOY OR COWGIRL THAT BEST REPRESENTS THE VALUES OF “DEDICATION, SPORTSMANSHIP”, “SHARING” AND “RESPECT”. “DEDICATION”- TO THE SPORT OF RODEO “SPORTSMANSHIP”- TO OTHERS “SHARING”- OF THEIR TIME AND TALENT, TO HELP OTHERS “RESPECT”- OF THEIR PEERS, FAMILY, AND FRIENDS THE RECIPIENT IS CHOSEN BY IJRA CONTESTANTS, K THROUGH 8th GRADE. OF THE MANY AWARDS IJRA HANDS OUT EVERY SEASON, THE STEFFEN/HITTLE AWARD MAY WELL BE THE “PINNICLE” OF ACCOMPLISHMENT IN OUR ASSOCIATION. RODEO HAS MANY CONTESTANTS, ALL DOING THEIR BEST, NEVER QUITTING, Alison Hittle (left) and Kenny IN EVERY EVENT. BUT WHEN IT’S ALL DONE, THE DUST SETTLES, AND THE Steffen/Chad Hittle Mental Attitude Award winner, Abbi TALLEY IS MADE, WE COME DOWN TO “ONE WINNER”. THE SAME CAN BE White (right) SAID OF THE CHOSEN RECIPIENT OF THE STEFFEN/HITTLE AWARD. ALL OF OUR KIDS TRY THEIR BEST, NEVER QUIT. AND IN OUR EYES, THEY ARE ALL “WINNERS”. YOU’VE ALL HEARD ME SAY “IT AIN’T JUST ABOUT WINNING IN IJRA”...., I SAY THAT BECAUSE IJRA IS MUCH DEEPER THAN THAT. AND THE STEFFEN/HITTLE AWARD SPEAKS TO THOSE VALUES OF “DEDICATION”, SPORTSMANSHIP”, “SHARING”, AND “RESPECT”. BY GETTING THE STEFFEN/HITTLE AWARD THE RECIPIENT IS INDUCTED INTO A GROUP OF THE HIGHEST REGARD IN IJRA. CHOSEN BY THEIR PEERS, AND CONSIDERED TO BE “A WINNER”. THE RECIPIENT WILL GO ON TO OTHER THINGS, PLACES AND AWARDS. BUT I FOR ONE SUSPECT THIS AWARD, THIS NIGHT, WILL BE REMEMBERED AS ONE OF THEIR BEST. THE RECIPIENT THIS YEAR DESERVES EVERY ACCOLADE THE AWARD IS ABOUT. A PERSON DEDICATED TO THEIR SPORT, WHO ALWAYS DOES THEIR BEST, ALWAYS DISPLAYS SPORTSMANSHIP, SHARES OF THEIR TIME, AND TALENT, WORKS WITH THE YOUNGER KIDS, AND HAS THE RESPECT OF ALL OF THE IJRA FAMILY. Winter Fun for IHSRA

On February 16, 2013 the IHSRA will have the annual Mid Winter Meeting and Cowboy Prom. This is a fun time for contestants and their families to all come together after the winter break to cover some very important topics, such as board elections, new information, and the spring rodeo schedule. Also, our student officers will give a recap of their trip to the national midwinter meeting, which will be held in Fort Worth Texas in late January. I will be attending along with our student secretary Korri Allen, our Queen Camrie Goodson, her mother Lola Goodson and our National Director Terry Haller. After the meeting, all of the kids will go change into their dance clothes and have the annual cowboy prom! This is a chance for all of us cowboys and cowgirls to dress up in our best, and a chance to see each other when we are not covered in dirt, sweat, and grit as we normally are at the rodeos! The dance is always a lot of fun, and is always a memorable experience for all of us. While the kids are dancing the night away, the parents will be at the scholarship benefit auction. This is just another example of how IHSRA gives back to the contestants! The scholarship foundation of the IHSRA is one of the greatest aspects of the IHSRA. The Scholarship Foundation of the IHSRA helps our seniors with college expenses, and helps to send those seniors off with blessings as they pursue higher education! As mentioned previously, we student officers will be traveling the end of January to visit the great state of Texas for our national mid winter meeting. In Fort Worth, we will also get the chance to go to the Fort Worth stock show and pro rodeo! We will also be getting down to business in meetings, where we will be present for discussions regarding any new rules and changes to the NHSRA rule book, as well as helping plan a schedule for the National High School Rodeo Finals in Rock Springs, Wyoming this year. It’s going to be as it was last year at the meeting, a great experience to have direct input during meetings with national student officers and national directors regarding things that effect us all. I hope we student officers can make Indiana proud!

My thank you to IHSRA

After an amazing fall rodeo season, it is nice to sit back, relax, and plan for the spring. I know I am not the only contestant who is ready for the spring season, where I can see many of my friends again and get the chance to compete with a great bunch of people! This is my senior year and I will be extremely sad to leave my IHSRA family! But, in the rodeo world, there are always more friends to be made and people to meet. It’s unbelievable how lucky we all are to be in such an amazing organization like the IHSRA that lifts people up as they do, and also makes everyone feel right at home. I’m proud to be in this association and can’t even imagine who I would be or where my life would have ended up with out its support and unending opportunities. Through IHSRA I have not only developed a great sense of responsibility, but I have been given the chance to excel in my future through college rodeo. Many past IHSRA contestants have gotten the amazing opportunity to become college level athletes, competing for various colleges and expanding their talents. It is crazy how my one decision to join the IHSRA has shaped my life so much. Thank you IHSRA and my rodeo family!

You Make A Better Door Than A Window Have you ever heard that phrase? I’ve heard it several times - usually when I was standing in front of the television, blocking someone’s view. I’ll also have to admit that I have used the same phrase when my kids are blocking my view of something! It basically means that you’re in the way and blocking someone else’s view. So, are you? Are you blocking someone else’s view? By that I mean, are you standing in someone’s way to Jesus? Are you hindering someone’s salvation because you aren’t walking the walk? Sure, we are all guilty of making mistakes. We are human and it’s inevitable that we will follow our flesh once in a while, but are you consciously trying to live so others will see Jesus in you? Or are you standing there like a closed door that won’t open? Have you ever really thought about how many people you influence in your day to day life? People can get so caught up in what others are doing - sometimes they want to be part of it, they may want to condemn it and talk about it in judgement or they may be uninterested and completely ignore it. We forget that people are taking note of us in the same way. Do they want to be part of what we are doing, do they want to pass judgment and talk about us or do they even pay any attention to us? Are you providing a “window” of faith that those around you can look through and see something they want to be a part of? Just like the song we sang in Sunday School - “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine...” We need to be sure that our life is a window that has a desirable view. Matthew 5:16 (NIV) In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. 2 Corinthians 4:6 (NIV) For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.

There is one window in my bedroom that I look out every morning. It is a beautiful view of a tree in our front yard. The tree is usually occupied by a couple of doves and depending on the weather, it may be covered in frost or the tree may be sporting new “buds.” It is just a beautiful view to behold as the sun is rising. (The birds chirping in the background during

Page 54

the warmer months is even a bonus.) I make a point to look out that window each morning to soak in the view. I want to be that kind of window for Jesus. I want to be a window that causes others to stop and take the time to see what’s on the other side. There really is a lot of thought that could go into this subject of doors and windows. Ideally we want to be a window to Jesus. In that case, it is up to us to keep our windows clean, just like in our homes. Not that I am a fan of cleaning windows....but if they need it and you do clean them...what a difference it can make as far as how the view appears.

Dirty windows don’t do justice to what’s on the other side. As a matter of fact, a dirty window can almost be worse than a door. Doors block the view, but dirty windows can alter the view. This is somewhat like a Christian who isn’t walking in faith with Jesus. They can become a stumbling block to their brother. 1 Corinthians 8:9 9Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak.

This month, let’s try to be clean windows that allow a good clear view of Jesus and his saving grace, not a dirty window or a door blocking the view. Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

On the Trail

By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church

STRANGER IN CAMP Gathered around the fire The boys were bone tired Been punchin` cows for days That’s why they were hired

He said I hate to ask But could I have a plate Boys I couldn’t tell ya The last time I ate

The sky was a sight Purple, white and blue Then Paul asked the stranger Pard do we know you?

The coffee in their hands Came from Cookies pot They drank it like water It was black and hot

And that coffee smells good Sure could use a cup By the looks of things You have enough to fill you up

He looked at the sky Said I’m not from these parts I was sent to your camp To see what’s in your hearts

Now the sun was still sleepin` Stars were over head Ram-rod come ridin` in Said Cookie get`em fed

The boys looked at him This stranger in the night Trying to see him better There by the fire light

You boys ride the Brand Owned by the father above So he sent me here To see if you’d show his love

As they filled their plates With chow pipin` hot Cookie looked at the boy Said that`ll hit the spot

Jim said sure mister Let me get you some chow When it comes to grub Cookie sure knows how

That’s when he rode in This stranger in the night He looked like an angel There by the fires light

Cookie filled his plate And Steve got him a cup The stranger sat to eat As the sun woke on up

Hebrews 13:2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. By: Bro. Brad Curtis 10/24/11 Vilonia, AR

One Last (& most important) thought…

Happy Valentines Day Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Salvation is a gift and a choice...... Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you? But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

TA-DAH!

I was boarding my horses at a stable near my home. This particular facility allowed me to work off the largest part of my board by doing various chores. One afternoon I was alone to handle the feeding, not an uncommon situation and one I had done many times before. Behind the stalls ran a narrow passage used to carry grain to the individual feed buckets. At the end of the passage was a small door that opened to the barn area. After filling the last bucket I passed through the door to begin cleaning. I left the door unattended for just a moment to toss a shovel full of manure on the pile outside. In ten seconds, maybe ten seconds, I returned through the same small door to find a thousand pound horse standing nonchalantly in the aisle way, completely trapped. This gelding was black and in the poor lighting, I nearly walked into him. He stood as if magically plucked out of the pasture and delivered to this position by some evil prankster. There wasn’t room to turn him and maneuvering backwards around the small door would be a near impossibility. The opposite side wall was stone with a barn-floor ceiling two feet above our heads. In front of us the passage narrowed further ending at a stairway. The only hopeful direction was to our right where I would need to remove waist-high stall boards. Even with the boards removed he still had to jump over a beam which was further complicated by the angle and small space to land in. To proceed I had to assume firstly, he would try to jump, secondly, make the jump, and most importantly not go berserk in the process. Seeing no other option and bordering on frantic myself, I began to rip out the old boards that blocked our escape. The cracking and banging that followed were enough to spook the calmest of horses, yet this guy stood quietly, his nose nudged up against a large barn fan watching my efforts without apparent concern. When the boards were cleared and the fan pushed as far forward as it would go, I looked at the small area we had to work with. He needed to jump through a hole three feet wide and two feet high, with just a couple feet of head clearance, and at that very sharp angle. I was hoping that when I finished the hole would look bigger but if anything it looked more difficult than I had imagined.

Page 66

I walked back to him with halter in hand trying to project a calm confidence. I remember avoiding eye contact so as not to give away my nervousness. He seemed to have a sense of what was about to happen. Up to this point he hadn't moved a muscle, and in a second I was going to ask him to take a step for the first time. If he panicked it was going to be disastrous. There was no place to run. Halter on and lead rope in hand I led him to his mark. Stepping through the hole I gave him a cluck of encouragement and with one step he launched his thousand pound mass through the narrow opening effortlessly landing in the only place he could with barely inches to spare. The grace and athleticism was a beautiful thing to witness, until the smallness of the landing space became dangerously apparent. I hadn’t accounted for my own escape. I was pushed back as far as the stall dimensions would allow nearly sitting in the feed bucket when the horse quit coming. The aptly named Freedom performed his miraculous stunt without touching a board. I squeezed by and opened the stall door. Freedom very deliberately trotted out to the pasture never breaking a sweat. As he settled in on a nice patch of grass he must have been wondering what all the fuss was about.

Mystery of the Month T ??

his month we have a Mystery family for our readers to identify. This family has been very successful in the horse industry. Obviously there was some success at the World Championship Quarter Horse Show, we’ll give you that....but not a year. I don’t think we’ll have to give much more of a hint than that this month. We’ll tell you a little more about this family once we have a winner. If you can identify this family of three, maybe the year and the horse - then send us an email or give us a call to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”

Call 765-744-7363 or email thehorseresource@msn.com with your answer! Good luck!

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner! We finally have a winner for our last Mystery of the Month. Our western store mystery gang was doing some hat shopping.......or maybe they weren’t. The group that stumped several people over the past two months were.... Drumroll, please........ Jimmy Warner, Richard Arsenault and Angie Stivers Moore! (Thanks to Connie Stivers for sending in this picture!) We had several guess that could name one or two, but not all three. Cindy Mason of Mount Washington, Kentucky knew the trio and chose a hat for her prize. Congrats, Cindy! If you can identify these three and maybe the year then send us an email or give us a call to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.” Call 765-744-7363 or email thehorseresource@ msn.com with your answer!

We Need Your Pictures From the Past..... We have almost ran out of photos!.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse business today. Or if you have pictures of a well known horse or event....that will mix things up a bit. We’re up for some new mysterys if you are!! Keep sending us those photos!! Send via email to thehorseresource@msn.com or mail to 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302
