LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

T

his month finds us looking towards Thanksgiving and the Christmas season that follows. I’ve never been much for the Black Friday shopping....I prefer to avoid the crowds and do my best to make sure I get as much done in as few trips as possible. I also love shopping on-line! If you love shopping on-line, then you need to check out the ideas that Raquel has shared with us in this month’s Horses and Heels. Great gift ideas for friends and loved ones you can buy from the comfort of your home. That’s my kind of Christmas shopping! You’ll find out that Bella gets a little emotional on us this month as she tells Duke’s story. I’ll admit, I got a few tears in my eyes as I was reading along. I’m so glad that he has a forever home. Please, be sure to take extra good care of your animals as the cold winter months approach. Check out the IBRA News section to read about this year’s IBRA Nationals. You’ll also want to follow up over the next year as the IBRA features one of 2013’s Champions each month. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I want to say, “Thank you!” I want to let each one of you know how much we appreciate you. We hope you have a very blessed and wonderful Thanksgiving! Until next month.........thank you, Lord, for all of my blessings, ......... remember to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

A Little “Barrel Talk” We have included a small section of “A Little Barrel Talk” for you this month. Remember to visit www.barrelhorseworld.com to read more Barrel Talk.

What Would You Try? cecollins0811 Posts: 9 If you could try any other equine discipline what would you choose? Personally I would like to try Show Jumping. It’s a lot alike with barrel racing actually since you only compete against the clock and you get a penalty knocking over poles. Doesn’t matter if your horse is the prettiest or who has the most silver lol. JRC Posts: 420 Three day eventing cowgirlchic Posts: 2652 I’ve dabbled in quite a few things, but I would love to try cutting or mounted shooting. I’ll never get back in an english saddle as long as I live. halter_ego Posts: 590 I ditched the barrel racing several years ago, and moved toward reined cow horse. I love it! It has been a life long dream of mine. (I only barrel raced because it was a lot less expensive and no need for cattle) I am now in a spot where I can afford to compete in the reined cow horse limited age events and I wouldn’t give it up for the world. Imharrypotter Posts: 363 extreme trail and mounted shooting. I would love to be able to rope. Karlaw Posts: 1044 If I had the money I would try cutting Murphy I think cross country would be pretty cool. Bibliafarm I want to be a cowboy and go round cattle up..all day.. not in freezing weather though. lol.. thats my dream.

Page 4

mruggles Posts: 4498 i would love to try the mounted shooting.........but im not sure if anybody would actually give me a gun(even one loaded with black powder)......and then let me get on a horse.....pretty iffy........ also cross country jumping Nateracer Posts: 2503 I’ve been as close to mounted shooting as sitting by the arena on my horse and watching. Barrel race was in the other arena. Nate didn’t freak out, so I’d love to try it on him. My other dream is to go on a horse round up. There is a vacation spot where they round up the herd of horses. Sounds like a blast! MsDuchessGoTe Posts: 1289 I’ve dabbled in everything but would really like to show Hunters cn1705 Posts: 297 I really want to try cutting! Hopefully someday!! graciemay Posts: 6394 I think I would love to jump again, not compete, but just for pleasure. But, somewhere deep down, I know I’ve lost my nerve, and will likely never do it again. speedjunkie Posts: 696 I have already competed in many disciplines - I ended up barrel racing as you really only have to compete against yourself and there are NO JUDGES! I was burned out in the show world. but if I were to do something else it would probably be Cross County - if I could find the right horse. if not then mounted shooting.

pippy Posts: 362 If I lived in the South, cutting no doubt. But up here in MI - Show Jumping! The1CowgirlsEnvy Posts: 584 I used to show reined cow horses and I love love love it, but alas I am a poor white girl so I run barrels lol but it would either be that or showing Hunter/ jumpers Ctrygirl14 Posts: 3161 Mounted Shooting! HorseyGirl Posts: 57 Three day eventing, for sure. TwistedK Posts: 4442 I started my riding as an equitation/hunter/ jumper rider. I’ve done lower level dressage too! I do find that it makes me a more balanced rider! I really want to try mounted shooting!!! and breakaway roping oija Posts: 839 Mounted archery. Reason1991 Fox Hunting. I have been a couple of times and it is an rush when the hounds get on the trail and start barking. It can be scary running around on the trails, but just like barrel racing a good horse makes it even more enjoyable. hoofs_in_motion Mounted shooting....that way if the zombie apocolypse ever comes, I’ll be wicked awesome shooting off my horse. AbbyDunRunnin Definitley 3 day eventing.

barrelracr131 I’ve dabbled in most english events. I would love to drive a 6 horse Draft Hitch. They are beautiful. bccanchaser16 Reiners again. I miss it. NinitheNinja I’d like to try endurance... my mare has some Arab in her and is the kind of horse that has boundless energy. The difficult thing would be trying to find time to condition her for it, she’s fit but I don’t know if she’s currently fit enough to (comfortably) trot for many miles at a time. Cross-country also sounds like a lot of fun. And mounted shooting! spitzh Trick Riding. mruggles i have been know to do that on a regular basis...........lol the suicide drag is my favourite, i seem to have a knack for it hammer_time Dressage or jumping. I’d like to learn something way out of my element. After watching the novice reining stuff at the Del Mar horse show, I’m quite confident I could have won the whole thing, had my horse been there. It’s just simply asking for cues and having a broke horse! From what I could see. Now at the pro level-yeah I get that. Hard stuff. Reining would be too in line with what I already know in the western world. Jumping and dressage would be way out of my element. www.barrelhorseworld.com

Top Barrel Racers Recover After Tragic Losses

“I never dreamed after the year we had last year that Oskar and I would be looking at making the IFR,” said Gabrielle. “I’m really looking forward to it.”

IFR44 Hopeful Gabrielle Oder

By: Tammie Hiatt With the rodeo season heading into the home stretch for IFR hopefuls, Gabrielle Oder of Hamilton, OH is among the barrel racers staking their claim in the top 15. “I am so excited to be in the top 15 this year,” said Gabrielle. “Last year was a rough year for me. My horse was a horse show barrel horse and he wasn’t adjusting well to the rodeos. This year, he progressively started handling things better and the IFR became a possible goal for me.” “I love rodeo,” said Oder. “My dad, Chip, was a pick-up man until I was 12, so I grew up going to rodeos. I’ve always had a horse and Dad has been a big influence on my horses.” Gabrielle’s rodeo horse is a 6-year-old sorrel gelding out of High Brow Cat. “His registered name is Dude Winder but we call him Oskar. He has a flax mane and tail and is really flashy. He’s a big horse, nearly 16 hands tall. His original owner brought him to my dad to break and he was the worst one we’d ever gotten in. He definitely has a mind of his own, but he’s a big baby at heart.” “Greg Hoover of Oxford, OH trained him for me and we started taking him to horse shows and the big barrel races. When I turned 18, I decided that I wanted to make a name for myself in the rodeo world. Oskar really struggled last year with the drastic change from the shows to the rodeo arenas.” “My favorite IPRA rodeo, so far, has been Attica, NY. That was the best run I’d made all year. It was flawless and Oskar gave me everything he had and we won the rodeo. That rodeo was the turning point for things coming together for us and we have placed at about every rodeo we’ve went to since then,” commented Oder. “Oskar handles ground good and he loves big arenas. Small pens are really hard for him and I try to avoid them. I only went to 2 rodeos that were on racetracks and I rode my young horse at those.” “I plan to turn him out for 30 days now that St. Tite is over. We didn’t get anything done there this year, but I’ll definitely go back next year. It was a great rodeo,” said Gabrielle. “I’ll haul my 5-year-old buckskin while Oskar rests. He’s another cow-bred horse, Colonel Freckles. Dad just bought three 2-year-olds that are actually running bred. I guess we’ll give them a try.” “I want to go enough the rest of the season to stay in the top 10 of the

September was a life-changing month for two of the top contenders in the IPRA world standings. Tiany Schuster of Krum, TX and Kasi Prather of Ochelata, OK lost their barrel horses while competing at St. Tite, Canada. Both ladies will be competing at IFR44 despite the major losses in their barrel racing careers. Tiany currently holds the number two seat and Kasi retains her fourth place ranking. Tiany Schuster decided in mid-summer to hit the IPRA trail. “Notable Bully really started clicking at the rodeos in March and June 1st I started going to the IPRA rodeos. He started doing really, really well. He was running very consistent and leaving the barrels up. He got me to second in the standings,” said Tiany. “Notable Bully was 13-years-old. I had sold him to Morgan and Cathy Grant and bought him back last December. I set an arena record on him at one of our first rodeos back together in Canada,” said Schuster.

Page 11

News “I generally spend summers in Canada. My boyfriend, Edwin Cameron, has a business there so I like to take my horses and stay a few months. Notable Bully was actually my 2nd string rodeo horse behind Hoosier Fame. But Hoosier was having trouble handling the ground in Quebec and Notable Bully was getting along with it fine.” “When the accident happened I was competing in the Canadian Cup IPRA rodeo at St. Tite. I had placed second in the first go, second in the second go and was running in the short go when it happened. Everything seemed fine until we turned the second barrel and I heard the “pop”. I thought he had over-reached and had a shoe poking into his foot. I was pulling him up when we got to the third barrel and when he turned he picked his leg up and hopped around the barrel,” she describes. “It turned out that he had broken the non-weight bearing bone in his hock. I can’t thank the Gauthier family enough for all of their help. It was so nice of Ben, Jessica Gauthier’s dad, to stay with me every step of the way. I was really falling apart and he stepped in and handled things for me. B.J. Prince and Sylvain were also very helpful through it all,” said Tiany. “It was a hard thing to go through.” “At the pro rodeo at St. Tite the next week, I rode my horse Bound in Black in the first go. There wasn’t much I could say he did right in his run so I knew I was running for round money after that. I rode Hoosier Fame in the second round and placed fourth. On my way back to Texas I ran at Bloomington, IN and Hoosier won that rodeo and then we went to Ft. Worth and won that one as well,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to the IFR,” said Tiany. “It was an exciting year, we started going, started winning and moving up in the standings. I really had my sights on the number one seat; and I still do even though Notably Bully isn’t with me. I’m not sure who I will be riding at the IFR, but I’m going to keep going to the remaining rodeos to stay afloat and hopefully stay where I’m at in the standings.” Kasi Prather had also been looking forward to returning to St. Tite. “Last year I won the second round and third in the short go and set an arena record. I was so proud of Chippy,” recalls Kasi. Rodeo’s Poker Chip or Chippy was raised and trained by Kasi. Chippy got everyone’s attention last year when the six-year-old was entered at only 12 rodeos and won over $8,400 in his first rodeo season, “I knew he was a nice horse, but I didn’t know how good he was,” said Kasi. “I did not anticipate I would be making the IFR in two events last year or again this year.” “When we got to Canada Chippy seemed uneasy. He had never coliced Photos provided by www.ipra.com: Top photo: Notable Bully; bottom photo Rodeos Poker Chip by Way Out West

before and he wasn’t showing any of the normal colic symptoms until it was too late. He just seemed a little fretty but I thought it was because he wasn’t beside Elvis, the horse Walt and I rope on,” said Kasi. “When we realized he was sick, the vet on the rodeo grounds sent us to the University of Montreal, which was 2 ½ hours away. We couldn’t get the GPS location correct and it ended up taking us longer than it should have to get there.” “Chippy was laid out in the trailer when we got there but he got up and stepped off of the trailer and looked around like,” saddle me up, I’m ready to run”. I went in to do the paperwork and when I came back 10 minutes later, he was dripping in sweat and they were prepping him for surgery,” explained Kasi.

Page 12

“Walt and I actually watched part of the surgery on a monitor. He made it through the surgery and we went back to St. Tite. They told us the next 48 hours would be critical. They called me Thursday morning and said he was stable. They called me back at 12:30 and said things were going down hill fast. We had just got out of town headed back to the University when they called again and said he was gone,” said Kasi tearfully. “Stassi Pyne offered me her horse to run at St. Tite, but I just decided it wasn’t meant for me to run barrels there. It just all happened too fast, it was crazy. It will be a while before I am able to go back to that rodeo.” “It’s been a really tough time for me. He qualified me for the Indian National Finals in Las Vegas, the ACRA finals and the IFR. Shane Goff has given me a horse to run and it’s starting to come together with him, so I may run him at Las Vegas. My mom has Chippy’s older brother that she’s offered to me but I don’t’ want to take him in case something would happen to him. I may have his sister back to run by then, she is recovering from colic surgery but may be back in shape by the ACRA finals,” said Kasi. “I had sold a brother of Chippy’s to Kevin and Jennifer Burch from Wilburton three years ago and they brought him back to me after they heard the news. I was so excited to step up on him. He looks just like Chippy did that at that age. He’s started on the barrels and I’m excited about him,” said Prather. As both of these tough ladies are dealing with their losses, they can look back and remember, “it may have been a short time together, but it was a good time.” Rest in peace Notably Bully and Rodeo’s Poker Chip

Hello Everyone, What a great month October was for the IBRA. We had one of our most successful National Finals this year in Cloverdale, IN. As always when moving to a new location there were questions in everyone’s minds as to how the new facility would suit. Well, it fit like a glove. C Bar C owners, Cindy and Carl Harlan along with facility manager, Steve Jackson went above and beyond to make sure everything worked great. We plugged 200 trailers into hookups, packed around 630 horses into stalls and had a total of over 1500 entries in our classes. Thank you to C Bar C Expo for the outstanding accommodations.

Sponsor/Director Race:

Let’s get to the Barrel Racing! What a week of competition. The Sponsors/Directors race got us started. Billy Hatzman and Bandito gave everyone something to shoot for. A continuous supporter of the IBRA Billy has been a sponsor for over a decade. He now serves as a tractor driver at many of our preferred and super shows and this marks his third Championship of the Sponsors/Directors Race at the IBRA National Finals. From the time he arrived on the grounds, Kevin Konopinski and his family were offering their help to the IBRA and C Bar C crew. So much to the point that I think Steve Jackson was trying to hire him by the end of the first day. Well Kevin made sure his hard work would pay off and it did. Kevin rode Takin A Cruz to run a 15.581 winning a 2D Sponsor/Directors Race Championship Buckle and $300. WV Sponsor Amy Campbell and Starlit Dixie Chic won the 3D for a buckle and a paycheck. TN IBRA member/sponsor Nola Gay and Nickys Dark Jack took home the 4D Championship. We thank all of our Sponsor/Directors Race contestants for your extra support of our organization.

A couple familiar faces let the competition know that they meant business in the Guaranteed Race. 2010 IBRA National Finals Champions Trevor Pruitt and Walts Rockin Roll won the race by over 2 tenths of a second. For the second time Jimmy Cagle has won the 2D of an IBRA preferred race this year. At the IBRA Preferred show in Jan. Jimmy won the 1D and 2D on both Friday and Sat. Jimmy and Neidras Cash pulled in $660 of cash for this ride. Michigan member Jerri Hoholik and Strawflyin Cash wound up with a Pro Rider Saddle and $440 for a 3D win. PA member Samantha Hall and Kate took the 4D win. All division winners of the Guaranteed Race won a Brand New Pro Rider Saddle, a IBRA WildCard granting them instant access to the Short Go in next year’s National Finals and of course a hefty paycheck!

IBRA NEWS 2013 IBRA National Champions are Crowned!

For our National Champions we are going to do something a little different this year. Rather than try to cram everything into one write up, we are going to try to interview our Champions and give them extra recognition throughout the year by focusing on each champion individually. Twelve Months until the 2014 National Finals, twelve Champions to recognize. Look for a special section in your upcoming issues of the Horse Resource.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2013 IBRA NATIONAL FINALS CHAMPIONS ASHLEY BROOKS AND JANE!

By the time that Ashley Brooks entered the pen on finals night exactly 2,352 runs had been made since the races began on Tuesday. The fastest time posted of all those was a 14.7 set by Trevor Pruitt in the Guaranteed Race. Ashley and Jane were about to change all of that…. by over a tenth! The crowd was wowed when the timer displayed a 14.647. With the fastest time of the weekend on the leader board the next 248 entries had to think they were likely running for second. And they were. No one came within two tenths of Ashley in the short go. She took home a big check to show off the 3,169 dollars she had earned. She won a Pro Rider Saddle, a Saddle Stand, a Carrol Leather Trophy Jacket, a Champion Buckle from Monsoon Silver and some generous gifts from Oxygen. After the Finals I asked Ashley, What makes your horse so special? Her reply, “We just click!”

Ashley has been riding Jane for about two years now and is starting to rack up quite the resume. She ran second in the All American Youth, qualified for the High School National Finals and won the 2D and the Wild Card that got her here at our Preferred Show hosted by the TN Miller Coliseum in January. Jane is owned by Holly Crook out of Tennessee. When Holly learned she was pregnant a couple years ago that is when Ashley took the reins, she hasn’t looked back since. Ashley requested that we include a special thank you from her to Holly. Ashley also thanks her Mom, her Dad and her whole family for all the support throughout the years. When I asked how she planned to spend the money she had won she said “Pay entries, maintain her horse and keep going.” That’s a pretty good way to stay at the top. Great job Ashley and Congratulations! The top ten of each division (where applicable) are listed below. For a full set of results please visit our website. www.ibra.us. Following the Finals we have been overwhelmed with the positive feedback. I know I speak on behalf of all our staff and directors when I say thank you for another wonderful year. Everyone seemed to be in such high spirits this year and that really makes our job worth doing. It is the goal of the IBRA to help improve our sport and also our association. I personally feel barrel racing is headed in a great direction and I am proud to see so many youth members out there running. We look forward to a bright future. Fun Night

It seems as though more people show up to watch Fun Night than do to watch the Barrel Race and I feel certain that we may have more entries soon in Tug Of War than we do in our Barrel Race. Fun Night is a great time for families to come out and just have fun. Put the money, time, energy and expectations of the race out of their minds and just have a good time. Take a look at some of the shoots captured below and find more on our Face Book (International Barrel Racing Association). Above: Competitors line up for the beginning of the Dog Race; Below left to right: The 2013 Egg Toss Winners are presented their trophies; 2013 Youth Tug of War Champions showing off their trophies; Shane Cline with Terri Stubbs and Luke, the Big Dog Race Winners.

IBRA NEWS Cowboy Church

Thank you for your support of Galilee Ministries. This Ministry is based in Cloverdale, IN but feeds families in 5 Counties. They Prepare 180 bags of food per week. The hat fines raised $205 for the ministry. The silent auction raised $520. And the IBRA will be contributing and additional $275 to make it an even thousand. There were several more monetary donations that were left in the office on Sat. which are not in these totals but greatly appreciated. We will be taking up collections at our Thanksgiving show in the form of canned goods as they are sure to be short after the Thanksgiving holiday. The IBRA home office will be making additional private donations to the ministry as well. Thank you so much to everyone who helped us make this fund raiser/food drive a success. Quarter Horse Day

M

ost of you have already seen the race results from Quarter Horse Day at Indiana Downs on October 12th, but if you weren’t there you missed one heck of a day. The weather was perfect, the rail on the track was jammed with spectators, dining room filled to capacity and the fastest horses in the world were off and running for

over $500,000 in just 9 races. Ty Murray, The most accomplished rodeo athlete in history, holding the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) record of seven all-around world championships, had a huge presence in the festivities at Indiana Grand Race Track in partnership with the Quarter Horse Racing AssociatIon of Indiana (QHRAI) on October 12th. He made his entrance riding a horse to the Winners Circle and participated in many activities during the day including autograph sessions, A mechanical bull, roping contest, live Quarter Horse racing card, and more. The event kicked off at 1:30 P.M. and culminated with a live performance by Cook & Belle and after party at the Grandstands Bar & Grill in the casino. QHRAI President Chris Duke presented Johnnie Jamison with the QHRAI Presidents Award. This award is the highest award bestowed upon an Indiana Horsemen by QHRAI. Johnnie received this award for his significant contributions as the Track Superintendent and Starter for the entire year at Indiana Downs. And then there were the races, here is just a brief recap of the highlighted races. The always exciting 110 Yard dash was won by Multiple Stakes Winner SPEED SMITH, Ridden by Mannuel Guiterrez, Trained by Brian Schling and Owned by Cesar Rosales. No speed index is given for these short races, but they are way cool, the whole race is in front of the grandstands and 15000 pounds of horses and jockeys are blazing down the track 50 miles an hour.

Page 24

W

hen it comes to surprise, The Circle City Stake left very little to the imagination. Big Time Favorite and Royally Bred “Luminaro” crushed the field as expected to win the $17,325

stake. Luminaro is by Separatist and out of the Great mare Quick Moon Sign. Trained by Julio Almanza, Ridden by Cesar Carrillo and Owned by a Grand Father/ Grand Son partnership of Jose Ortiz and Ezequiel Rodriquez. Luminaro won by a length and a half and earned a 97 speed index, put this one in your virtual stable to keep an eye on he is gonna make the big time. The big races just keep coming on of the last days of racing in Indiana for the 2013 season. Next up is the $117,000 Sterlie Bertram Derby, this field was one of the strongest, evenly matched of the day. Indiana Bred 3 year olds very nearly broke the track record when betting favorite Tinys First Pepsi crossed the wire a half length to the good earning a 106 speed index. Tiny is owned and trained by “Big” Ron Brown, and ridden by Rodney Prescott. The winners share pushed Tiny’s earnings to over $219,000 multiple stakes winner. Hard work, good breeding and faith pay off in the $70,840 Governors Stake, when Foose on Fire cross the wire at 3-1. This nice gelded son of Foose has shown his talent all year long and in the able hands of Randy Smith finished up the year with a well deserved big win. Cesar Carillo was aboard for owner Rose Bode, as the connections finish up the year with 4 wins 2 seconds and $59,000 in earnings in 7 starts. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. The 2013 version of the Miss Roxie Little futurity had it all, The purse very good at $136,000 and won by the very successful connections of Owner/Trainer Ron Brown and Ridden by Alberto Pusac, with Pistolpackin Pepsi, the second big win of the day for this team.

Last but not Least the $63,000 QHRAI Derby, a mild upset in this one with Habits Secret going off as an even money favorite but finishing second to Diamonds Edge a Texas Bred Special Leader gelding who certainly earned his pay running a whopping 107 speed index and WHAT A RACE less than 5 hundredths of a second separated the first 4 (that’s a neck and 2 noses) Diamonds Edge is owned and trained by Salvador Rojas . Congratulations to all the connections with the big wins on a GREAT DAY at INDIANA DOWNS. A big thanks to Brian Elmore, Jon Schuster, Kevin Greely and Everyone with Indiana Grand Casino and Centaur for making this all come together. A special thanks to Chris Duke, Michelle Collins and all the other QHRAI directors for all of their hard work and dedication to excellence.

2013 QHRAI

Speed Sale This year marks the third year in a row that the hammer has fallen in the fall at a Racing Quarter Horse Sale in Central Indiana. The weather was perfect and the facility at the Marion County Fairgrounds was as good as it gets. The QHRAI had a great team of people working up front and behind the scenes, It was obvious A LOT of work and prep went into the 3rd Annual QHRAI Speed Sale. Thanks to all of the QHRAI Directors, horsemen and the great staff at the Marion County Fairgrounds and Indy Riders 4-H Horse and Pony Club for helping to make this a great sale!! The Catalog was a little thinner this year but by anyone’s standard the best group of horses that have been offered. Great consignments from solid Owner and Breeding operations, some of the Best Stallions from around the country as well as the best bottom sides not only in Indiana but from around the country were represented throughout the pages of this year’s sale, and right around 3pm the chirping of the Auctioneer began and the sale was off and running. The mark was set when the first horse walked into the ring. Hip #1, an Indiana Bred FDD Dynasty consigned by White Horse Ranch, was the high seller. Cindy DeLong had the winning bid for $11,000. This colt was an outstanding individual by one of the hottest sires going and a bottom side to match. Remember the name WH Shine On Down, a nice baby and this year’s high seller. The QHRAI Speed Sale is without a doubt the place to go for a money making race horses in Indiana. WH Johnnie Boy Red $109,000, WH Design By Dash $67,000, Romped $69,000, Bye Bye Corona $84,000, Achieve the Speed $25,000, Dash Ta Win $38,000, A Royal Hare $35,000 are all Stake Horses who were sold through our sale ring in JUST the first 2 years. There is a Strong market for yearlings, this year 26 were offered and 18 sold, and a good guess is that 5 of the 8 repurchases were there for “show not sold”. As far as other race prospects, we had some very nice horses offered but there was a gap between seller’s value and buyer’s value and we didn’t get many sold. We run for nice purses in Indiana and it’s hard to blame a consigner who wants a good price for a good race horse. It seems that new comers and TB owners and trainers are more willing to make an investment in racing stock than long time QH racing Hoosiers. Indiana Bred horses have one of the highest average earnings in the country and JUST LAST YEARS sale graduates have earned nearly Page 26

$300,000. Breeding, Raising and Racing is great, noble and something to be proud of, but getting a piece of the 300 grand is pretty cool too. On the other end of the racing stock spectrum, it seems as though there is a solid $2,000 - $3,000 barrel market for not so fast sound horses, from an outside perspective it seems a fair trade. Selling Brood Mares is a NO – GO. If one was to guess, the lure of the Fall and Winter Mixed sales in Oklahoma is just too strong. We had, by far, the strongest line up of brood mares in our 3 sales and they were in foal to some of the top stallions is the nation, NO – Go. A similar situation exists for weanlings, we offered very nice weanlings and unless consigners would take less than stud fee, the did not sell, hard to figure but facts are facts. All in All we had a GREAT sale, roughly 50% of the horses that went through the ring sold and sold for fair prices for all concerned. Like any sale there were some that left you scratching your head. 2013 QHRAI Speed Sale Graduates Below is a complete list of horses that “Sold” For a complete list including repurchases please go to INQRacing.com Name

We sold 39 horses and roughly the same number were repurchased, the 39 head that sold grossed right at $100,000. The Leading Consigner was Greg Morrison (Whitehorse Ranch) selling 6 for $20,800 and the leading buyer was Cindy Delong who purchased 6 horses for $23,400. Final Thoughts, YEARLINGS, YEARLINGS, YEARLINGS AND RACING STOCK. I don’t believe the QHRAI could do much more to accommodate breeders, consigners and potential buyers, owners and trainers. The market in Indiana is relatively new, the QHRAI Speed Sale is going to be here for a long, long time and eventually more owners and trainers will recognize that in the first 2 sales alone consigned horses have earned nearly $500,000. Thanks to ALL the consigners and buyers for supporting the QHRAI SPEED SALE and we look forward to seeing you next year.

Dead Stuff

S

aturday I had to clean up some hay cut last week out of a hay field.

For some reason, a strip about 50 feet long and two feet wide had been cut and raked, but never made it into the baler. It was lying on top of the alfalfa. The field was green, lush and already starting to grow again, except the part covered by the brown tangled mess of dry brown hay. That portion was yellowing, dying and showed no growth. The soil was the same for the entire field. Whatever rain had fallen had fallen over the entire field. There was no more shade or sunshine on this part of the field than any other. The only difference between the beautiful and healthy and the ugly and dying was the existence of the dead. My life is like the hay field. My existence is rooted in the soil of my past, my faith, my heritage. I need life giving forces to grow and produce as I was designed. But, just like the alfalfa, I can be healthy and growing or I can be like the part of the field covered by the old, dying grass.

Our relationship with our Creator is the most important relationship we will ever have. The significance of it is the most personal, fundamental decision we will ever make it. Our mental healthiness is found in the balance of what we were, what we are and what we hope to be. Pain and joy can determine our future with others. Hopefully, our pasts hold wonderful memories; realistically, it probably includes painful times, too. Our history can be a classroom in which we have the ability to learn to live better than we ever have. It can be a stranglehold which slowly kills us and prevents our future development. Spiritually, mentally and emotionally, we must remove the “dead hay” of the past from our present or we will never experience growth in the future. It will not remove itself; many, some who call us “friend”, would like to keep it in our lives. Ultimately, we determine if it will remain. Is there dead hay to be removed from your field, my friend?

If I don’t get rid of the dead part in my life, I will die. Spiritually, the dead must be transformed to the living before growth can occur. Mentally, the destructive force of the past must be removed before my mind can be rejuvenated. Emotionally, the pain of heartbreaks must be extracted before I can ever experience new love.

Getting Your Horses Ready For Winter

Another thing to consider with inside show horses is their blankets. Horses in a closed barn generate a lot of heat and the barn will stay relatively warm with the doors and windows closed. With a few horses in the barn so when you add blankets and sheets to the equation, make sure the horses don’t get too hot. Many times if you put your hand under the blanket, you will find that your horse is sweating. You can actually dehydrate a horse by keeping him too hot with too many blankets and sheets. This goes for horses that are put outside with blankets and sheets on also.

© Stephanie Coffman | Dreamstime.com

If you want to keep the hair coat short, the best way to do it is to keep the horses under sixteen hours of light each day. Do not use more than sixteen hours of light as more is not better and is actually worse. One negative to this plan is that your horse’s metabolism is meant to have a certain number of days per year with shorter hours of light. So if you have him under lights all winter you have to be careful in the spring that when you stop the lights that the daylight hours you supply are not actually shorter or your horse will think it is fall and will start to grow hair in the spring.

E

ven though it is already very cold in some areas of the country, winter officially arrives on December 22. Depending on whether your horse is show horse kept inside or a broodmare kept outside in the pasture, there are several things you can do to help your horse through the winter. Contrary to popular opinion, heat is much harder on animals than cold. That being the case we will start off focusing on the horses housed inside for the winter. One of the first things most people do to protect their horses from the cold is to close up the barn. Most of the time the main reason for keeping the horses extra warm is to keep them from growing a winter coat. While a nice slick hair coat is necessary for placing well in shows, a good set of lungs is also necessary. If the barn is closed up too tightly and the ventilation is poor, the ammonia levels will build up in the barn and high ammonia levels can damage the lungs which can lead to pneumonia. The ammonia levels are especially high closer to the floor so when the horse lies down he is breathing high levels of ammonia if the stall has not been properly cleaned and the ventilation is poor. It is very important to keep the stalls well cleaned twice daily but it is even more important if the windows and doors are kept closed. We would like to help you get your horse health questions answered by a knowledgeable equine veterinarian. Submit your questions to us via email, we will present them to a qualified veteranarian that specialize in equine health and then publish the question along with the vet’s response in a future issue of The Horse Resource. Outside horses mainly need a place to get out of the rain and wind. A two sided shelter with walls breaking the prevailing winds is plenty. Depending on where you live you will probably need to increase your horses caloric intake to make up for the energy spent staying warm. A good way to keep your horse warm is to supply plenty of roughage. Eating hay generates heat inside the body and therefore warms the horse from the inside. It is better to provide most of the calories in roughage but if your horse cannot maintain his weight with hay alone then add a well balanced grain mixture to the daily allotment of hay. Your horse should eat about 2% of his body weight in good quality roughage per day. That is twenty pounds for a 1000 pound horse. It is also a good practice to have your horse’s yearly preventive dental care done before the winter if he is an outside horse in a cold climate. Good teeth help him to digest his hay well. One last thing to make sure of in areas where the water freezes is to make sure your horses always have access to water. Lack of water is a sure way to cause your horse to have an impaction colic. Remember, warmth is a good thing but don’t over do it. My horses live in a barn that is well ventilated in the winter. The doors and windows are closed when it is cold but the stalls are kept clean and the air can escape through openings in the roof. They do not wear blankets and their hair coats look great. They are fed a very well balanced diet. Most of winter preparation and care is common sense. Pay attention to your horse and he will tell you what you need to do. Merry Christmas and may God bless you and your family this Christmas season! Stay warm and don’ t eat too much!

The Kelley Girls

Name: Hope Kelley Age: 14, had a birthday in October Horses: I first rode a pony named Dusty Rose, we all rode her first, she was great. I now ride a pony named Rusty, I have ridden him for about 5 years now. He was an Amish buggy pony, he pulled a buggy full of kids to school and my mom found him at a sale barn, although some friends bought him. Their boy did not really like him so they called mom a few months later and asked if she still wanted him. I said Yes, and we went to their house that day and rode him, and we brought him home. For a couple years all I did was long trot on him.

Page 38

Name: Haley Kelley Age: 17, will be 18 in November Horses: I learned how to ride on Dusty Rose, like everybody else, she died this year, she was like 35 ish. For my 6th Birthday grandpa got me Spirit, a 6 year old black and white paint mare, that I rode for 7 years, she was so awesome, and she lives about 10 minutes from our house now. She is 17, she was pretty much a trail horse, I showed her in 4-H. I then rode Lightning for a couple years, he is an older barrel and pole horse. I have not rode this summer, I am just working now and going to school.

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

his month we are spotlighting two of our amazing members who represent and lead our association as the current and past IJRA Princess’.

Alyssa Griffiths is the daughter of Michelle Meier and Cory Griffiths. Alyssa was our 2012-2013 IJRA Princess and also competed in IJRA and the Junior High Division in Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Goat Tying, Ribbon Roping, and Breakaway Roping. Alyssa did a great job as our IJRA Princess and we wish her the best in all of her future dreams and goals, in and out of the arena. IJRA would like to recognize our 2013-2014 Indiana Junior Rodeo Association Princess, Lexy Petro. Lexy is the daughter of John and Jodi Petro and competes in IJRA as well as the Junior High Division in Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Goat Tying, Breakaway Roping, and Ribbon Roping. We are excited to have Lexy leading our association this year, as well as being a mentor and role model for so many kids in and out of IJRA. We would like to share with you the speeches that Lexy and Alyssa gave during this year’s IJRA State Finals Princess Contest. Thank you Alyssa for all of your hard work and time you shared with everyone as Princess. Lexy, we are excited to see what our 2013-2014 season brings as you lead all of our members through grand entries, fun get-togethers, and endless memories. 2013 PRINCESS FAREWELL SPEECH Hey Guys and Gals! I can’t believe this time has arrived. WOW!! That’s all I can say! It has been a wonderful fun filled year serving as your IJRA Princess. I appreciate every single person who has helped me along this journey. Looking back to 2 years ago when I first ran for IJRA Princess, I was quiet and shy. Look at me now! Here I am talking to everyone, outgoing and making lots of new friends along the way, and unforgettable memories. I have overcome talking in front of large groups of people. Thanks to being princess I have become a leader to the IJRA contestants, each and everyone of you has pushed me and supported me at every rodeo. Thank you again! There is a lot of work that goes into being the IJRA princess. (Just ask my mom!) It’s so much more than looking good and doing a hot lap. Its responsibility, leadership, organization, and so much more. You must keep a positive attitude reguardless of your runs outcome. You are the role model for everyone. With this I have learned that with every win there will always be a loss. “Take one in stride” as they say. I have had the wonderful unforgettable opportunity to represent the IJRA at many equine events. A few that are most memorable are the Hoosier Horse fair and at my local Elkhart County 4H Fair. There I was able to organize grand entry for the IPRA rodeo, and gain special recognition infront of over 9000 people at one of this countrys largest county fairs. It was absolutely AMAZING! As I close on this truly amazing chapter in my life,I am honored and blessed to have served as your princess for the last year. I shall move on to my next chapter. RIDE HARD, GO FAST and HAVE FUN!!!!

IJRA News 2014 PRINCESS SPEECH Before I was involved in the IJRA I was: shy, unorganized, didn’t work my horses, and I wasn’t as responsible in taking care of them. Getting involved in the IJRA has helped me to appreciate my horses and my family who helps me to care for them. I feel very blessed that I am able to have horses and a nice place to keep them and know there well taken care of. I also have a great place to practice and help other people learn more about horses and the IJRA. Participating in the IJRA has helped me to grow as a person. I am now more confident and less timid. Thank God for my horse Shiney, he has tought me how to work for things, and not just to have things easy. In Galations 6:9 it states, “and let us not grow weary of doing good for in due season we will reap if we do not give up.” When I first got my horse Shiney he had alley issues. To help fix the problem I had take lessons with him but not only did I take lessons I also spent time trail riding which helped us to bond together. I’m thankful to say that I’m starting to see improvements from the hard work we’ve done together. I have had a great experience in the IJRA. I’ve met a lot of amazing people who have impacted my life greatly. I’ve seen a lot of really good riders, And have competed against some of the best there is. I can honestly say I am a way different person now than I was when I first started. Being here in the IJRA has made me realize the opportunities I’ve been blessed with. LEXI

o you know what it takes to bring a rodeo to your town? The local families in Lanesville Indiana can tell you and it is lots of time, hard work and dedication to the sport of rodeo. Last month on September 28 & 29th the Indiana High School Rodeo Association held a community-supported rodeo named after our largest sponsor, Lucas Oil and the Lanesville Heritage Park where the rodeo was held. The Lucas Oil Heritage Rodeo was a huge success with great weather the first day and some rain and mud on the second day. The Indiana cowboys and cowgirls did a great job of show casing the sport of rodeo to the local folks. Two weeks before the rodeo the Indiana High School put together a float for the parade with several cowboys and cowgirls participating. The rodeo kids won a plaque for the “Best Equestrian Unit! By partici-

pating in the Lanesville Heritage Parade the local high school rodeo kids promoted the upcoming rodeo and sport they love. We want to thank the Floyd County Conservation club who hosted the Indiana High School rodeo kids during their National Rifle Association (NRA) sanctioned competition shooting small bore rifle and trap shooting. The cowboys and cowgirls enjoyed their time on the range. Thanks also to some of the gun club members for being there for assistance and the donuts were also appreciated. The IHSRA also put together a program of all the local sponsors and made them available at the rodeo. What a great way to show off our community sponsors. Thanks to all of them! Our largest sponsor, Lucas Oil also supports Protect the Harvest, which is an energetic new voice in the conflict between animal rights extremists and mainstream America. They represent farmers, ranchers, hunters and animal owners who want to preserve our traditional way of life and defend our food supply from radical animalists. CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

Blurred Lines

w/ Christa Conway

No, not the song. Well, yes, the song, I guess. I mean it started with the song. I was about to drift off to sleep last night and that line came into my head (from the song.) My train of thought would probably scare some of you, so I won’t go into that much detail here....but suffice to say, it started with the song. If you would have used the phrase “Blurred Lines” to me a year ago, I would have said that it made me think of late nights driving from one rodeo to the next. I can tell you - that isn’t what the song is talking about. What I want to try and stretch this over to and write about is how badly our society has blurred the lines between right and wrong. If you had told my great-grandpa thirty years ago some of the things that are going on today, he would have told you that you were crazy. Now, of course, many, many things are better today than thirty years ago. But I have to say that many, many things are worse. Blurred lines - right or wrong? People thinking it’s ok to disrespect other people and kids disrespecting their parents...... very seldom do we hear “Sir” and Ma’am” anymore, actually I’ve probably heard more of the opposite, with kids calling parents things I would have had my mouth washed out with soap for just saying - let alone aimed towards a parent. Is this ok? Blurred lines - right or wrong? People thinking that sex is no big deal and kids following right along.....the average number of sex partners for girls in their early twenties is in double digits. It’s everywhere - in music, in magazines, on TV shows and in the movies. Casual sex, friends with benefits, booty calls - all in primetime TV and PG movies. Is this ok? I could go on, those are just two things that come to mind, but my point is this...we can’t count on society to draw the line between what is right and what is wrong. If we do, it will be very, very blurry.

certain topics, and why there is a line that should be respected. I really do feel like they should be exposed to some of these things only because we can’t shelter them forever....not that I want them to think that I approve of or condone certain behaviors, but I want them to be exposed enough to know how to handle themselves when put in tough situations.

This is true for adults because we become desensitized and even more for our kids because they learn what they live.

Proverbs 22:6 says: Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

A lot of my ranting is because I am a parent and it is tough being a parent in the world we live in today. The only good thing I can think about all of the “goings on” is that it gives me plenty of opportunity to talk to my kids about

This scripture is encouraging for me. It reminds me of the foundation we put on young horses when we are training them, our children will be able to go back to the “training” or foundation instilled in them by us, as parents.

Page 44

But, just as those young horses that are hustled through the basics and miss the fundamentals can be tougher to correct when issues or bad habits pop up, so it is with our kids. If they have not been shown the difference between right and wrong as little ones - how will the handle themselves as they grow older? Basically, blurred lines are worthless. If we want to make a change, the best place to start is at home. Respecting ourselves and each other is the first step. We can then start by distinguishing the line between right and wrong in our own homes - with ourselves and our children. It only gets clearer from there. Once again, I hope this makes sense;) Happy Trails & God Bless!

Winner Winner Lat’s Turkey Dinner Lat saddled up early His best pony Ol Rock He was was black as night Except for one white sock

But this day was different Ol’ Rock was ridin’ pretty well Till a turkey flew off his roost Causin’ Lat a livin’ hell

Yep it went off But Lat weren’t really hurt Just couldn’t believe his eyes As he lay there in the dirt

He said, Lord thank you For makin’ me a winner Providin’ all I need Cause I’m havin’ turkey for dinner

Now Ol Rock weren’t really solid He was really kinda green Would have been a good’en If he weren’t so stinkin’ mean

Ol Rock broke into Yep he came apart Lat was in trouble Right from the start

That turkey that caused the wreck Fell to the ground dead That misfire from ol Lat’s colt Blew off the gobblers head

Ephesians 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

Just a bit twitchy And he was bad to bite Shoein’ weren’t that easy More like an all-day fight

First he blew a stirrup Then he lost his seat When he hit the ground It sure weren’t on his feet

So Lat gathered him up Then caught his sorry horse Thankin the Lord above For the days main course

But he was the best That poor ol Lat had He didn’t ride for pleasure Cause it made him fightin’ mad

That’s when it happened When he hit the ground That ol colt on his hip Made a deafenin’ sound

Yep he had a sorry horse And hit the ground that day Almost shot himself But he still had time to pray

Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you? But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Barks N Bits ella (& Miss Maybelline)

with our favorite Jack Russel Terrier...

This Is Home

The cats have all settled in and made themselves at home - in the top of the barn....and that is fine and dandy with me. The biggest cat is very friendly with the people, she comes out and hangs around with us some during the day. Every once in a while she’ll arch her back, like she’s making sure we don’t get any ideas. The other kitties are a little younger and a lot more skittish. They pretty much stay out of the way of the people - and us. Needless to say, the dogs and cats have came to an agreement. This is our home and it is their home and we just have to learn to get on with it. I think this is a pretty nice place to call home. It’s pretty nice to have been chosen to be part of this family. I have been here since I was just eight weeks old.....kind of like Freckles and Miss Maybelline. We were all chosen by the people as puppies and have lived here most of our lives.

country to fend for himself. Yes, I know, awful, isn’t it? You see, Duke just showed up at the neighbors house one day with another dog, no collars, no tags - just two big healthy Labs out in the middle of the country. Our neighbors started putting food out for the two dogs. The other Lab decided to move on, they weren’t sure what happened to him or where he went. Duke decided to stay and enjoy the food and company of their little dachshund. Duke told me that he really loved his new little friend. Duke also told me that he got very curious about all the excitement happening down the road (at our house), so much so that he had to check it out. That is when we all got introduced to Duke. He meandered down to visit and that is how it started. Duke started coming to visit every day while the people were out doing the barn chores. He would go back to the neighbor’s house in the evenings after the people (and me) returned to the house. Each evening his little dachshund friend would wait at the edge of the neighbor’s field for him.

I think I’ve mentioned how Duke ended up here, but let me tell you a little more of Duke’s story.

One day Duke didn’t come to visit, but we could hear him crying....for two or three days he cried. The people thought maybe the neighbors had put him in the kennel to keep him from wandering down to our house. After talking to the neighbor, the man found out that Duke was not in the kennel.....he was just sad. It turned out that Duke’s little dachshund friend had died and Duke was mourning for his little buddy. I know, I’ll admit, I teared up a little too.

My people seem to think that Duke was dumped. By dumped, I mean taken for a ride in a car with people he had grown to love and trust and then left out in the middle of the

It was probably another day or so before Duke came to visit again. His stays got to be longer and longer until he just decided he wanted to be here all of the time.

Duke, on the other hand, chose the people. I mean, he decided he wanted to live here. I really got to thinking about that this past week when I learned a little more about Duke during a trip to see the animal doctor (they call him the vet.)

Page 48

Duke has now been a permanent fixture here at the farm for over a year and half. I’ve kidded about how he is a “big lug” and how he leaves “dukies” in the yard....but I really do think a lot of the big guy. Remember how he was with the baby foal that died? Getting back to the beginning and our ride to the vet and the reason I decided to share Duke’s story. When we all loaded up into the Suburban to go visit the vet, Duke got very quiet. I never really though much about it until the lady noticed. After the people had him and Freckles get in the back, he just got really sad and mopey. He wouldn’t look at the people, he wouldn’t even lift his head when they called his name. The lady thought something was wrong, she tried to cheer him up before we left the drive and he just looked lost. It was then that the lady said, “I bet he thinks we are taking him away. The last time he was in a vehicle was when he was brought to the country and his last family left him.” Oh my....you talk about pulling at your heart. I almost lost it, and we all know I am not one for the mushy stuff. We tried to convince Duke that we were all returning home - together - .....and of course we all did go back home together. It took Duke a day or so to come out of his sadness. I think he finally realized that this is his home and he isn’t going anywhere. You see, in the beginning he chose us, since then we have all chosen him.

ITOBA POWER BROKER GIVES BOB BAFFERT RECORD WIN IN $500,000-ADDED INDIANA DERBY (G2); PURE FUN TAKES THE $200,000-ADDED INDIANA OAKS (G2) AT INDIANA DOWNS ON SATURDAY SHELBYVILLE, IN (October 5, 2013) – Power Broker powered through the lane to give Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert a record third win in the $500,000-added Indiana Derby (G2) on Saturday at Indiana Downs, and Pure Fun spoiled the party for prohibitive favorite Fiftyshadesofhay in the $200,000-added Indiana Oaks . “He’s a nice horse, we’ve always known it. It just took Bob time to find the right spot for him. He does run good fresh and he certainly showed up today,” said Jimmy Barnes, the top assistant to Baffert, who also won the Derby in 2009 with Misremembered and in 2010 with Lookin at Lucky in 2010. Gary and Mary West’s Power Broker, the 8-5 favorite in the field of 12 3-year-old colts, rated behind the early pace dictated by Ruler of Love and Bradester as they set fractions of :24.03, 47.06, 1:10.42 and 1:35.48. When they hit the top of the lane, Power Broker had moved up to second but had to be steadied when a tiring Bradester drifted out into his path in the stretch. Under Martin Garcia, he then rallied down the middle of the track and kicked clear on a sloppy surface to cross under the wire in 1:41.95 for the 1 1/6 miles to finish 1 ¾ lengths in front of Bradester. Holy Lute also closed willingly to be third, another ½ length back. “Once he (Garcia) got him out there and got him going, he just kept on going. He was starting to draw off. We’re very proud of him,” said Barnes. Bradester’s connections were also proud of his effort. Lightly raced with only four starts and making his first try in stakes company, he relished the off going under Brian Hernandez, Jr. “I think he ran a huge race and we think he has a promising future.” said Dorie Smith, assistant to Eddie Kenneally: Micromanage, Uncaptured, Fordubai, Mr. Palmer, Ruler of Love, Edge of Reality, Bad Hombre, Miraculousmo, and Skilltopaythebills completed the order of finish. Power Broker, who was bred in Kentucky by Jamm Ltd and was a Grade 1 winner as a juvenile, won his second graded stakes race and improved his record to 4-1-1 in 10 starts. With the $286,812 winner’s share of the purse, he upped his bankroll to $864,812.

While Power Broker rewarded the backers in the Derby Day crowd of 5,855 who made him the favorite, 2-5 favorite Fiftyshadesofhay, who is also trained by Baffert and was ridden by Garcia, could fare no better than third in the field of seven 3-year-old fillies. Pure Fun, ridden by Victor Lebron and trained by Ken McPeek for Magdalena Racing, got a perfect trip in the slop as she rated behind fast fractions of :23.61, 1:10.78 and 1:36.98 which the favorite got caught up in. From her stalking position, she was able to put away Fiftyshadesofhay in the stretch while Oscar Party got up for second, 1 ¾ lengths behind. Fiftyshadesofhay finished third, another ¾ lengths behind. The Oaks was the first victory for Pure Fun since the Kentucky Oaks (G1) on May 3, when she suffered an ankle injury. “Coming off the pace, that’s her style,” said Lebron, her regular rider. “Our game plan was to take her back and make that big run she always makes. I know how much kick she can give me. I used it to my advantage when the others were running out of horse.” The rest of the order of finish was Plenty O’Toole, Seaneen Girl, Wild About Irene, and Run Forestry Run. Bred by Royal Oak Farm LLC in Kentucky, Pure Fun is by Pure Prize out of the Key to the Mint mare Chelsea Green. The win was her second in graded stakes company and fourth overall in 12 starts and her earnings are now $482,652. The 19th edition of the Derby and the 18th running of the Oaks were held at Indiana Downs on the one-mile oval for the first time as all previous runnings were at Hoosier Park on the seven-eighths mile surface. An enthusiastic crowd of 5,855 was on hand Saturday. “We are excited to have the Indiana Derby here for the first time and to have all of these big name horses and their connections in attendance,” said Jonathan Schuster, vice president and general manager of racing for Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. “A day like today really puts on display the idea behind one breed, one track and everything Centaur Gaming, in partnership with the breed organizations, has done to continue to take horse racing in this state to the next level.” About Centaur Gaming: Founded in 1993, Indianapolis-based Centaur Gaming’s mission is to bring the entertainment and economic benefits of casino gaming and horse racing to communities across Indiana. Centaur, a privately held Indiana owned and managed company, employs more than 2,000 Indiana residents through the award-winning entertainment destinations of Hoosier Park Racing & Casino in Anderson, Ind. and Indiana Grand Racing & Casino and Indiana Downs in Shelbyville, Ind. ITOBA NEWS - Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association The Jockey Club Releases 2013 Report of Mares Bred Statistics The Jockey Club today released Report of Mares Bred (RMB) statistics for the 2013 breeding season. Based on RMBs received through October 10, 2013, The Jockey Club reports that 1,698 stallions covered 34,174 mares in North America during 2013. The annual statistics represent approximately 90% of the mares that eventually will be reported as bred in 2013. According to historical trends, The Jockey Club expects to receive RMBs representing an additional 3,000 to 4,000 mares bred during the 2013 breeding season. The number of stallions declined 8.8% from the 1,861 reported at this time in 2012, and the number of mares bred fell 3.4% from the 35,391 reported at this time last year. The number of stallions covering 100 or more mares increased by one, from 87 in 2012 to 88 in 2013. These stallions accounted for a greater percentage of the total mares reported bred this year — 34.0% of all mares bred in 2013 versus 31.9% of all mares bred in 2012 as reported at this time last year. RMB statistics for all reported stallions in 2013 are available through the Publications & Resources section of The Jockey Club’s website at jockeyclub.com. Further book size analysis shows a 2.9% increase in the number of mares bred to stallions with a book size of 100 or more in 2013 when compared to 2012 as reported at this time last year; an 11.6% decrease in mares bred to stallions with a book size between 75 and 99; an 11.3% increase in mares bred to stallions with a book size between 50 and 74; a 15.9% decrease in mares bred to stallions with a book size between 25 and 49; and a 5.3% decrease in mares bred to stallions with a book size fewer than 25. The stallion Into Mischief led all stallions with 210 mares bred in 2013. Rounding out the top five were Archarcharch, 187; Harlan’s Holiday, 187; Kitten’s Joy, 184; and Majestic Warrior, 176. Kentucky traditionally leads North America in Thoroughbred breeding activity. During 2013, Kentucky’s 235 reported stallions covered 15,695 mares, or 45.9% of all of the mares reported bred in North America. The number of mares bred to Kentucky stallions increased 2.2% percent compared with the 15,361 reported at this time last year.

Of the top 10 states and provinces by number of mares reported bred in 2012, only Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Texas stallions covered more mares in 2013 than in 2012, as reported at this time last year. The following table shows the top 10 states and provinces, ranked by number of mares reported bred in 2013 through October 10: State/Province

Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association - ITOBA NEWS The Jockey Club, South American Federation Announce Plans for Pan American Conference in NYC The Jockey Club, the breed registry for Thoroughbreds in North America, and the O.S.A.F., which promotes Thoroughbred breeding and racing in nine Latin and South American countries, announced today that The Jockey Club will host a Pan American Conference in the New York metropolitan area Wednesday, June 3, through Saturday, June 6, 2015. The announcement was made Monday, October 7, 2013, at the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities’ 47th International Conference of Horseracing Authorities in Paris, France, by James L. Gagliano, president and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club, and Marcel Zarour, president of the O.S.A.F. The conference, coinciding with the 2015 Belmont Stakes, will be held on a biannual basis in the future. The organization and agenda for this conference will fall under the direction of Horacio Esposito, the president of the Latin American Racing Channel and special advisor to the president of O.S.A.F., Pablo Kavulakian, director of the Latin American Racing Channel, and Gagliano. Among the prospective topics are simulcasting, medication, harmonization of rules, international ratings and classifications, marketing, stud book issues, the importing and exporting of bloodstock, and Thoroughbred ownership. “The International Federation of Horseracing Authorities was built and thrives on communication and collaboration among racing nations, and we are very pleased to see the Pan American countries come together to share opportunities, challenges and best practices that will enhance

Thoroughbred breeding and racing,” said Louis Romanet, chairman of the IFHA. “We eagerly look forward to the Pan American Conference in New York in 2015.” “Thoroughbreds from South American countries continue to compete successfully throughout the world, and this conference will be educational not only for our various constituents but also for those from breeding and racing organizations from other parts of the world,” said Zarour. “The Jockey Club has been an active member of the international community on many fronts for many years, and we are proud to help organize and co-host this important event,” said Gagliano. “And just as the annual IFHA international conference features a world class race with the Arc de Triomphe, the Pan Am Conference will conclude with the Belmont Stakes, the oldest race in the Triple Crown series.” O.S.A.F. is the South American Association for the promotion of Thoroughbred Race Horse Breeding in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Mystery of the Month Our Mystery this month is a photo by Kenneth Springer taken of a trio from the 1999 NBHA World Championships. The lady in the picture has owned and ridden some of the toughest horses in the country over the years. Most barrel racers will recognize the cowboys in the picture as well. Can you tell us the names of those in the picture? The name of the horse and the location of the event? If you know the identity of our Mystery group, be the first to send us an email or give us a call with the correct answer to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”

Call us at 765-744-7363 or email

Good luck!

Mystery Solved.....

We have a winner! Amy Elliott of Brookston, Indiana identified our Mystery group from our last month’s issue. Our Mystery identities are as follows from left to right: John Paige (Trainer), Dee Paige, Carl Newell (Owner - holding horse), Doug Paige (jockey), Ike McCarthy (cowboy hat) and Phyllis Paige. The horse is Doolins Image (sired by Geddes Bill Doolin.) The picture was taken at Carmi, Illinois. Carl Newell is stil an active member of the racing industry today. Joy Goodman also answered correctly. Congratulations to our winner. For solving our mystery, they will receive their choice of a FREE subscription, a “horsey T-shirt or a “horsey” hat for their prize. For your chance to win one of our prizes, contact us and take a guess to our Mystery of the Month in each issue. Good Luck!

We Need Your Pictures From the Past..... We have almost ran out of photos!.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse business today. Or if you have pictures of a well known horse or event....that will mix things up a bit. We’re up for some new mysterys if you are!! Keep sending us those photos!!
