LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor We’re running a little later than usual this month, but we really wanted to be able to include the IBRA National results in this issue. What an exciting event! Watch for interviews with the new IBRA Champions in future issues. And for those of you who attended any of the production, performance or speed sales over the past couple of months, we hope you found the perfect horse for your program. We have reuslts from several of those sales included this month as well! This is a month to gives thanks and I want to be sure just a few things I am thankful for this year. Don’t forget to make note of yours too:) I am thankful for my faith, my church and my salvation. I am thankful for my family, my friends and my animals. I am thankful for good health, the beautiful seasons here in Indiana and a place to call home. I am thankful for colorful sunsets and quiet evenings in the barn. I am thankful for windburn cheeks, comfortable boots and hoodies. Until next month.... enjoy some windburned cheeks, double up on the chapstick, wear your boots with pride ........and don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback! God Bless and Ride Safe, Christa Conway

Gettin A Horse To Stand Still While Mounting Izzy+coy My gelding will do 100 circles before he will stand to be mounted . I Usually will just stand with my hands on the saddle and go with him until he decides I’m not going anywhere, then he stands still. Is there a way to break this habbit? He’s 12 and I haven’t had him quite a year so I think he’s been getting away with this his entire life so far. Thanks for any suggestions
minute...dismount...and move him around or do some other task... and do it all again. He is anticipating. He is ready to GO! And he has learned the habit. Some of mine have had this habit too when I got them. But some of the worst wrecks I have seen have come from a horse walking off during the mount. Its worth teaching and never allowing them to get back in that habit.
ampratt My guy did this. What worked for me is when he started moving while I tried to get on, he got to move backwards until he learned it was easier to stand still and let me get on. Unfortunately, he is an OTTB so he didn’t really know any better. Most jockeys are hoisted up as the horse is moving forward so he was just doing what he knew. FirstFirewater We always flex their heads to the left when we get on and off... its makes them softer for riding in general and then when they are completely flexed they cannot walk off... It’s amazing how well it works and they take to it nicely
Fairweather Exactly..... Also, you can rock the saddle side to side so they have to get their feet under them. They tend to stand still a little better when you do that. Look at your what you’re doing with your toes and your body when you get on. Are you poking his side with your toe when you step up? Is your body tense? Are you squeezing with your legs at all? Even though you might not mean it, all those things are telling your horse to move as soon as your foot hits the stirrup.
TrailGirl The first step to this is teaching the horse to STAND. That means no fidgeting...and start that from the ground. He should stand quietly when asked. Once he gets that... use that command to get him still before you go to mount. Be consistent and persistent. He must stand. And once you get on he will likely start to walk off before your butt hits the saddle. Halt him and make him STAND. Don’t ride off as soon as you are mounted. Stand there relaxed for a minute. I even sometimes mount...sit relaxed a
Page 4
cavyrunsbarrels My horse stands very well MOST of the time (I thank his previous trainer/owner for teaching him right). But every once in a while he goes rogue and will swing his but away from the mounting block or back up when I go to get on. So when that happens I make every place other than right next to the mounting block unpleasant by making him WORK. Backing up, yielding the haunches, trotting circles, whatever. Once he’s done that for a minute we stand by the mounting block and rest. If he moves again it’s back to work. I’ve never had to do this more than twice. Once on I ALWAYS just sit for a minute. Petting him, relaxing,
I’ll have him flex his neck for me. Then we calmly walk off. I’m not sure if this is the “right” way to do it but it’s worked for us so far. Crowned Image My horses are all 15.3-16/16.1ish I use the mounting block now. My little butt climbs up all three steps and I’m in a position to check them and ask them to “whoa.” Also much easier on their back muscles and spine. Since I started with the block neither of them try to walk off anymore and wait quietly for me to get my stirrups and flex them. If I’m mounting from the ground I do like another said I flex their noses to their girth and get on and they won’t move either. I’m always jealous of those that can climb on in any way shape or form and their horses are stock still! TEACH ME YOUR WAYS! cranky B4 10am My gelding tried to do that sometimes. I just back him up to where we started till he stands still when he does it, in the beginning I had to do that a couple of times I was getting on, but he picked up pretty fast what I wanted him to do. Most of the times he is good now I also flex him left and right when I get on before we move out. So he knows not to walk off immediately. CE’s wrapn3 I’ve found more times than not that when a horse starts doing that the saddle is hurting them. A quick fix is if you turn their head to the right it makes them freeze turning to the left makes them turn more but its more of a long term teaching technique. Turning to the right is just a quick fix
coco~n~cash RE: TrailGirl - I totally agree and when I get on I make mine back up and everytime i stop he backs up its a good habit to get into. Izzy+coy Thanks everyone ! I really appreciate it! Flashin The County Watch this video.... https://youtu.be/NAlPH5tjiPA Trippin I’ve only had this new 16hh gelding for a few months and he was a jerk about moving around when I first got him. I started giving him a treat as I got on and making him bend his face to both sides as I sat there. Now hes a perfect gent. It may be the treats but it could be he likes the saddle better. Southtxponygirl All the horses that I have been around that did this was because they were sore from the rider getting on them wrong, me meaning wrong was pulling on the saddle horn while getting on and hanging and taken to long to get up in the saddle and pulling the horse over at times..this would make them sore. pabarrelracer Try using a mounting block. Worked for mine. luckyjo Yes to the mounting block, even with a short horse. It is much easier on the body of the horse and the rider!

News Patrick Family makes history with three yearend awards at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 31, 2015 – By Tammy Knoc The Patrick Family is no stranger to success in the state of Indiana. Their stable has competed in almost every season since pari-mutuel racing was introduced in 1995 in the state of Indiana. However, Gary, Cindy and Cheyanna Patrick took their success one step higher by earning the Leading Trainer, Leading Owner and Leading Apprentice Jockey awards, which is a first in the history of racing. Gary, who is the track’s all-time leading trainer, completed the 120-race meet with 40 wins and purse earnings of $919,905. The Circleville, Ohio native now has a tally of 281 training wins lifetime at Indiana Grand over Tom Amoss with 229 career wins. The Patrick Stable is unique in the fact they own all of their own horses, making their operation a true family-oriented business. “This is so exciting to win this award this year and it’s really special since no one has ever done this before,” said Patrick on winning three of the categories with his family members. “To be atop the standings with my wife and daughter is fantastic. If I didn’t have Cindy and Cheyanna beside me, our season wouldn’t be like this. To win this many races and own and train all of the horses is very special.” Patrick noted that one of the highlights of the season came from the performance of Daddy Justice, who he acquired through a purchase last year. The three-year-old son of Lantana Mob won three stakes races during the meet and completed the 2015 race meet with four wins in seven starts worth nearly $200,000 in purse earnings. “We buy and race a lot of horses,” said Patrick. “Daddy Justice is the best horse I’ve ever had. He’s just a special horse and has made this meet extra special.” Cindy led the race for leading owner the entire meet. A former jockey herself, she accumulated 37 wins with purses in excess of $843,000. Cindy, who won the leading owner title in 2014, broke her own record of 33 wins last season to establish a new record for most wins in one meet. She also broke the record for most purse earnings by an owner in one season, passing Maggi Moss’s previous record of $747,763 set in 2013. Cindy is now ranked in the top 10 of all-time leading owners at the track. Ironically, Gary still holds the top spot as the track’s all-time leading owner with 201 wins. “This is a pretty nice honor,” said Cindy. “It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. We had horses at both the track and our house. Every day, we had something on the trailer going back and forth.” Gary and Cindy’s only child, Cheyanna, is a success story in many ways. The now 19-year-old won several titles on the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) circuit, winning the All American Youth
Page 10
World as well as titles as Indiana State Champion in the Youth and Open divisions and National Reserve Champion. She began riding Thoroughbreds in 2013 and won 15 races as an apprentice last year at Indiana Grand. She returned this season to earn 26 wins in limited starts due to her obligations with college. Cheyanna is currently a junior at University of South Florida – Tampa where she is studying pre-law and has a goal to become a lawyer for the horse industry in the future. Cheyanna becomes the winner of the inaugural Juan Saez Leading Apprentice Jockey award. The award was named in honor of Saez, who was the leading apprentice rider at Indiana Grand in 2014. Saez was tragically killed in a racing incident on Oct. 14, 2014. To honor and keep his memory alive, the award was named in his honor beginning in 2015. “It’s really special to me to win this award because I knew Juan (Saez) and rode with him,” said Cheyanna. “As soon as I knew about the award being named in his honor, I wanted to try really hard to win it. To be standing here with my mother and father for awards is also very special.” Cheyanna, who rode for other trainers for the first time in 2015 at Indiana Grand, was represented by jockey’s agent Shannon McGovern during her time in Indiana. Cheyanna returned to college in mid August and still had a strong enough lead with 26 wins to secure the Saez Leading Apprentice Jockey award. The Patricks were presented with their awards on the final night of racing for 2015 at Indiana Grand. Kevin Greely, director of racing, Jon Schuster, vice president and general manager of racing, Brian Elmore, vice president of racing at Centaur Gaming and Steve Cahill, clerk of scales, helped make the presentation to the Patricks. They were surrounded by several family members who had come in for the ceremony. Family members included Gary’s son, Johnny Patrick, and his daughter, Amy Happenny, as well as Cindy’s father, Charlie Ridley and his wife, Sandy, who drove in from their home in Oklahoma City, Okla. Ridley provided a hand-crafted exercise saddle for a silent auction to benefit Oriana Rossi, who was injured in a racing incident in July at Indiana Grand. The final tally on the saddle was $1,600 and the winning bid came from a group of four owners from the Randy Klopp Stable. “I usually give five saddles a year for auction for different charities and wanted to do something for Oriana here at Indiana Grand,” said Ridley. “I’m really happy it brought this amount for such a good cause.”

CSR Indoor Performance Arena - Bozeman, Montana Story & Photography by: Larry Larson
Bozeman, MT – One word – STELLAR. The decision to offer a sale merging two of the Nation’s leading Quarter Horse Performance and Breeding Operations has proven to be the right one. Myers Performance Horses, long established as the Nation’s leading 2-Year-Old Prospect Program and home to $9 Million Leading Sire Frenchmans Guy, joined forces with the Copper Spring Ranch for their 2015 Performance Horse Sale. The auction was held on Saturday, August 22nd at the spacious CSR Indoor Performance Arena near Bozeman, Montana offering 59 head including a majority of well-started arena prospects. The performance horse market is huge and records were definitely broken. The 54 head changing hands cashed in approximately $1.5 Million for an overall average of $27,306 selling to 18 states and Canada. Myers Performance Horses, owned by Bill & Deb Myers along with their sons Chad, Billy, Brandon & Brady from near St. Onge, South Dakota, stand the still vibrant 28-year-old Leading Sire Frenchmans Guy, along with A Smooth Guy and Cowboys Cartel SI 93. They have recently introduced their Junior Sires Ima Special Kindaguy and This Guyz A Keeper, both promising young sons of Frenchmans Guy. Two and 3-year-old Arena Prospects and yearling stallion prospects sired by the 3 senior sires and World Speed AA were included in their 2015 sale offering. Copper Spring Ranch, a state-of-the-art facility designed for the breeding and training activities they offer, is owned by Klein & Karen Gilhousen. Managers Brian & Lisa Anderson oversee the daily ranch operation and Dr. Chris Ray operates his Equine Services at the updated veterinary clinic located right on the ranch. They stand the proven producer Prime Talent SI 107 - a Multiple Stakes Winner and race sire of nearly $1.5 Million in earnings with numerous AAAT racehorses. Topping the 2015 Myers Ranch/Copper Spring Ranch Performance Horse Sale was a 2013 Buckskin Mare sired by the CSR stallion Prime Talent. Explosive Talent, paid in full to the Future Fortunes and WPRA Pro Elite Stallion Incentive programs, left the ring on a record-breaking bid of $100,000 from the Cok Family from Montana. The eye catching mare is out of the CSR broodmare Blondies Dy Na Mite – a daughter of Dealing An Ace SI 96 out of an Oklahoma Fuel SI 108 daughter. The CSR second high-seller was Take Me Ta Fame, a 2013 Bay Gelding by Leading Sire Dash Ta Fame SI 113 and out of Betta Takemeserious. His dam is by Frenchmans Guy and a full sister to BFA World Champion Futurity Champion Guys Cash Perks. He found a home in Florida on a bid of $48,000 from the Hatch Family. The CSR consignments sired by Prime Talent had an overall sale average of $21,036. Topping the Myers Ranch consignments was a daughter of A Smooth Guy - a futurity and slot race champion sire. He was the 2013 Future Fortunes Champion Juvenile Sire at the BFA World Championship and the 2015 Future Fortunes Champion Freshman Sire at the Old Fort Days in Arkansas. Guyz Smooth Amber, a 2013 Bay Mare, is out of

their perennial producer Amber Holland SI 88 by Holland Ease SI 109. The ¾ sister to Guys Amberetto, already proving herself in the early 2015 futurities, caught the eye of repeat buyer Harry LaToush from Kansas and a final bid of $56,000. The A Smooth Guy consignments averaged a strong $35,700 with many going into the training programs of the Nation’s leading barrel racing trainers. The Frenchmans Guy consignments broke all records with an amazing $41,714 average and two 2-Year-Old daughters left the ring on bids of $49,000. Flits French Blondie, out of the mare Two Bit Flit, an own daughter of Fire Water Flit SI 86, found a new home with the Plundel’s from Iowa. Out of the Myers Ranch broodmare No Shake For Deb by Royal Shake Em SI 104, the gray mare Guys Girls Shakem Up drew considerable attention and is now in Texas with the Hill Family. Both prospects are enrolled in the Future Fortunes program. Their ranch sire Cowboys Cartel SI 93 is a son of World Champion Producer Corona Cartel SI 97 and out of Multiple World Champion Race Mare Dashing Folly SI 108. His consignments commanded an impressive average of $30,250 and his top seller was Cowgirls Luv Cowboys, a 2013 Bay Mare out of Paddys Irish O Lena by Paddys Irish Whiskey. Ask the Vet with Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM
DIAGNOSIS, PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF COMMON RESPIRATORY DISEASES
T
he main goal of the respiratory system is to transfer oxygen from the air that is breathed to the red blood cells where the oxygen will be transported throughout the body. In addition, carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, is eliminated from the body via the lungs. If this system is compromised in any way it will severely affect the athletic ability of a horse and maybe threaten his life. The lower airway consists of the lungs and bronchi. The lungs have protective mechanisms that help prevent infection. The air we breathe is not sterile and contains many contaminants such as dirt, dust, pollen, chemicals, as well as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The protection actually starts in the upper airway with filtering, humidifying, and warming of the inspired air. The upper respiratory system, trachea, and bronchi are lined with tissue that always is covered with a sticky mucus that traps contaminants in the air . The tissue lining the trachea and bronchi has
by Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM
cells with extremely small hair-like fibers sticking out into the airway called cilia.
PART 1
The cilia increase the surface area of the filtering surface and play an active role in airway protection. The debris that is collected on the surface of the airways actually is transported away from the lungs by these cilia. The small cilia fibers move in a coordinated rhythm to move the thin layer of mucus that floats on top of the cilia and the debris that is stuck to it out of the lungs and up the trachea where the horse will swallow it. Anything that decreases the effectiveness of this process increases the chance for the development of respiratory disease. Factors such as cold air, smoke or chemicals in the air and inflammatory conditions of the airways such as COPD and flu can decrease the cilia defense mechanism. Chemicals like ammonia fumes from poorly cleaned stalls or because of bad barn ventilation are a common cause of decreased ciliary action. Another very important way by which the mucociliary clearance mechanism can be overwhelmed and rendered less effective is not allowing the horse to lower its head during transport. In fact, the transportation process can stress the defense mechanism of the lungs in several ways. The exhaust fumes from a poorly maintained or designed truck can have a negative effect on the cilia’s effectiveness. In addition, a trailer that has poor drainage can allow for the buildup of ammonia fumes. If the ventilation within the trailer is not good, it can make all of these negative factors regarding lung health worse. There have been several scientific papers evaluating the effects of transportation and head posture on lung health. It has been demonstrated that horses confined with their heads elevated for 24 hours developed an accumulation of inflammatory airway secretions that was associated with increased numbers of bacteria in the lower respiratory tract. These findings indicate that hauling horses in a manner which prevents them from lowering their heads during transportation and crosstying may contribute to lower respiratory tract disease. There are other protective mechanisms in place to protect the respiratory system against infection. There are millions of special cells deep within the tissues of the lung that can kill bacteria and inactivate viruses. These cells are neutrophils and macrophages that basically eat the bacteria and viruses. Besides blood work, ultrasound, radiography, endoscopy and respiratory fluid analysis, there are ways to evaluate the respiratory system which include evaluating respiratory rate and character of breathing, A physical examination is required to adequately evaluate the respiratory system. It should be determined if there a nasal discharge, and if so is it a clear and thin, thick and green discharge, thick and yellow discharge? Is it bloody, foul smelling, and does it come from one or both nostrils? Is the air flow from both nostrils normal? Has the horse been coughing, and if so is the cough wet or dry? Are there any painful swellings around the head? Does the horse make a noise while breathing at rest, at work, on inspiration, or expiration? Is there an extra abdominal movement while breathing? Is there a fever? Are there any other horses on the farm with similar signs?
An accurate diagnosis is important for an accurate and successful treatment. Top: Horse gettiing upper respiratory system scoped. Bottom: Horse getting lungs xrayed diagnosing pneumonia.
Page 24
PNEUMONIA Pneumonia means infection of the lung. It does not indicate the cause or the exact location of the infection in the lungs.
Ask the Vet with Dr. Steve Fisch, DVM A properly designed vaccination program is an important part of preventing respiratory disease.
Viral Pneumonia Many of the viral entities affecting the lungs also affect the upper airway. Some of these are Equine Influenza, Equine Herpes Virus and Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA). Equine Influenza--. The equine flu viruses contain a chemical that damages the mucociliary transport mechanism and allows for evasion of the immune system. The damage to the mucociliary transport system can take several days or longer to repair. This leaves the defense mechanisms decreased and exposes the horse up to the possibility of secondary bacterial infection. The disease can be extremely contagious, especially in conditions of crowding and poor ventilation. Influenza most commonly affects two- and three-year-olds. Stresses on the respiratory tract’s immune system and poor vaccination programs are predisposing factors. The incubation period is one to three days. The virus usually affects the upper respiratory tract more than the lungs. Clinical signs usually appear three to five days following exposure to the virus. The clinical signs include fever, anorexia, depression, a clear nasal discharge, and a deep, dry cough. The course of infection is typically from two to ten days if there are no complications. Secondary bacterial infection is a common complication of equine influenza. Horses can shed virus for three to six days after the last signs of illness and should be kept in isolation for that period of time. The treatment generally involves symptomatic care and the use of antibiotics only if a secondary bacterial infection is suspected. One of the greatest risks putting and affected horse back in work too soon. The virus causes a significant amount of tissue damage that requires time to regenerate and heal. If the horse is placed back in work too soon, it is highly likely that complications will develop. In some horses with severe infections, there might be the need for one to two months of rest prior to resumption of training. A recovering horse should be rested at least 21 days past the last sign of infection. Young foals can suffer more severely from equine influenza. They can develop extensive and fatal pneumonia. Regular vaccination can significantly reduce the population at risk and is recommended. For younger athletic horses which might be at greater risk, it is suggested that they be vaccinated at three to four month intervals as opposed to the older horses, which should receive their boosters at six to twelve month intervals. Equine Herpesvirus (Rhino)--Equine herpesvirus, equine rhino, rhino, and rhinopneumonitis are all names for the equine herpesvirus. Rhino means the upper airway and rhinopneumonitis means inflammation of the upper airways and lungs. There are four currently known strains of the equine herpesvirus known as 1, 2, 3, and 4. It is strains 1 and 4 that are associated with respiratory disease in the horse. Respiratory disease related to the herpesvirus most commonly occurs in foals, weanlings, and yearlings. The immunity to herpesvirus infection is short-lived and reinfection is thought to reoccur. In broodmares, there can be abortion related to infection. The equine herpesvirus type 1 has the
ability to cause respiratory disease, abortion, and neurologic disease. Foals can be born suffering from extensive pneumonia and die within 72 hours.. The infection occurs via the inhalation of the virus. The virus does not survive well outside of the body for extended periods of time. Close contact with an infected animal or tissues is important part of transmission. The clinical signs appear one to three days following infection and include fever, anorexia, depression, a clear nasal discharge, and a deep dry cough that cannot be distinguished from influenza. The treatment is largely supportive and a convalescent period of rest is extremely important for reducing the complication rate. Vaccination will not always prevent the disease, but can reduce the severity of the disease. Pregnant mares need to be vaccinated to prevent abortion. Equine Viral Arteritis--The equine arteritis virus causes inflammation of the blood vessels. Transmission of this virus can occur via inhalation or sexual contact. The virus rapidly spreads throughout many of the body’s organs and the disease can produce signs of respiratory distress. The disease also can cause abortion. The incubation period is three to 14 days. The main clinical signs include fever, loss of appetite, depression, and possibly a cough. A clear nasal discharge, a bright reddening of the nasal and ocular tissue, and excessive tear production can also be associated with EVA. The treatment consists mainly of supportive therapy and treatment for any secondary bacterial infection. Rest is very important. Isolation should be maintained for three to four weeks past the last observation of clinical signs to prevent transmission. Most horses recover uneventfully but there can be fatalities. Viral Diagnosis The clinical signs for most of the viral respiratory diseases are very similar. In many cases, the exact cause does not have a significant impact on the treatment, but knowing the specific cause can provide information as how to prevent the disease. A nasal swab can be acquired for an attempt to identify the virus via DNA in the laboratory. This is the most common way to make a diagnosis. In addition, there are several laboratory techniques used in identifying a virus present in a lab sample. Another diagnostic tool is to evaluate the concentration of antibodies in the blood for the suspected virus. Read more next month in this two part series.

Pistolpacking Pepsi Wins with Authority in Hoosier Park Classic
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 10, 2015 – It was a “Pepsi” exacta Saturday, Oct. 10 as Pistolpacking Pepsi and Tinys First Pepsi, stablemates from the Ron Brown Stable, finished one-two in the 19th running of the $86,500 Hoosier Park Classic at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. Ridden by Jose Beltran, Pistolpacking Pepsi led from gate to wire during the 400-yard dash to win in a time of :19.818 seconds, establishing a new stakes record for the event. Drawing post two in the full field of 10 worked to Pistolpacking Pepsi’s advantage as several horses in the center of the pack, including WH Design by Dash, were caught up in tight quarters at the start. Pistolpacking Pepsi had a clean break and was on top in the first few strides of the race. Beach Runner and Rolando Pina also showed good early speed in the center of the track. As the finish line neared, Pistolpacking Pepsi was stronger than ever, rallying home for the win by one and one-half lengths over Tinys First Pepsi and Cesar Esqueda, who closed well to finish a neck ahead of Beach Runner for second. “He (Pistolpacking Pepsi) broke clean and he ran really, really good tonight,” said Beltran, who returned to Indiana Grand from the meet at Prairie Meadows just to ride the standout Indiana bred. “He ran fast and he never stopped. He ran really big tonight.”
HOOSIER PARK CLASSIC Pistolpacking Pepsi
Jesse James Jr - Wave of Pepsi, by Bill Cole Jockey: Jose A Beltran Trainer: Ronald G Brown Owner: Ronald G Brown & Robert A Ray Breeder: Diana J Keiser noted that he gets hand walked a lot and sticks to a regular schedule just like the rest of his barn. “The key to ‘Pistol’ is to keep him happy and fresh,” said Brown. “We don’t turn him out at all during the season because we are afraid he might hurt himself, but he gets turned out all winter, so he gets a break then.” Pistolpacking Pepsi paid $4.20, $2.80, $2.60 across the board as the favorite in the race. His win was one of two on the night for Brown, who also captured a win with WH Kenny G to qualify for the Miss Roxie Little Futurity during one of three trials held earlier in the evening.
Mavara Vegas Wins QHRAI Derby
Pistolpacking Pepsi has now earned four wins in eight starts for 2015, only missing the board once this season. The four-year-old son of Jesse James Jr. increased his career bankroll to more than $400,000 with his win in the Hoosier Park Classic, which was one of three stakes that originated during the first season of pari-mutuel Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana in 1997 at Hoosier Park. Pistolpacking Pepsi has been owned during his whole career by Robert Ray and Brown. I’m excited about both horses (Pistolpacking Pepsi and Tinys First Pepsi) racing so well,” said Brown. “I’m so happy I’d pay $20 for a headache. He (Pistolpacking Pepsi) broke real sharp tonight and he beat some nice horses. To get a “Pepsi” exacta makes it extra special.” Pistolpacking Pepsi remains at Indiana Grand between races. Brown

Trio of Randy Smith Horses Wrap Up Trifecta in $120,200 Sterlie Bertram Memorial
FDD Dynasty - Jess Like Vegas, by Mr Jess Perry Jockey: Alejandro Luna Trainer: Sacramento Chavez Owner: Alejandro Medina Breeder: Dunn Ranch Ltd SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 24, 2015 – Mavara Vegas and Alejandro Luna kicked off the stakes portion of the all-Quarter Horse racing program Saturday, Oct. 24 with a win in the 19th running of the $125,000 QHRAI Derby at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The race is one of three original stakes created during the first year of pari-mutuel Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana held at Hoosier Park in 1997. Starting from the center of the pack in post five, Mavara Vegas broke well for Luna, who shipped in from Los Alamitos to ride the three-yearold chestnut filly by FDD Dynasty. The duo sat in mid pack through the early stages of the race over the muddy racing surface. It looked like Parti Favor and Rolando Pina would have the edge in the latter stages. However, Mavara Vegas kicked into gear and rolled right on by to win the 400-yard dash by three-quarters of a length in a time of :19.744 seconds. Parti Favor was a solid second over a late closing Bye Bye Birdy and Jockey James Flores, the favorites in the race.
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 24, 2015 – It was a clean sweep for Trainer Randy Smith of Broughton, Ill. in the seventh running of the $120,200 Sterlie Bertram Memorial Stakes during the final all-Quarter Horse Night at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino Saturday, Oct. 24. Beach Cartel polished off his sophomore season with a win in the event, posting a one and one-quarter length win as the heavy favorite in the nine-horse final.

QHRAI DERBY Mavara Vegas
Starting from post five, Beach Cartel was lightning quick out of the gate and got good early positioning for Jockey Berkley Packer. The grey son of Escondido Beach put pressure on the rest of the field to catch him the entire 400 yards, a feat that his opponents could not tackle as Beach Cartel glided under the wire for the win over the muddy racing surface due to afternoon rains in the area. Stablemates DNA Dales Quick Cat
Trained by Sacramento Chavez, the win in the QHRAI Derby marks the second stakes win of the season for Mavara Vegas at Indiana Grand. She was also victorious in the $72,000 Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby in early August for owner Alejandro Medina. “She (Mavara Vegas) is just one of those horses that you don’t have to do too much with,” said Chavez, who trains outside of Chicago. “She always races well.” Mavara Vegas paid $8.20, $3.40, $2.80 across the board. It was the third win in four starts for the California-bred filly for 2015. Mavara Vegas increased her career bankroll to more than $122,000 with her win in the QHRAI Derby. Luna, who devotes his time to riding at Los Alamitos, was making only his second start of the meet at Indiana Grand, guiding Mavara Vegas to a second place finish in the QHRAI trials. Earlier this year, Luna won the Grade I Ed Burke Million Futurity at Los Alamitos, marking his 18th Grade I victory.

Members of the Bertram Family were on hand to present the trophy to the Smiths and to Miller for their win with Beach Cartel. The Bertram Memorial was named for longtime Quarter Horse supporter Sterlie Bertram, who had more than 60 horses at one time at the family farm near Modoc, Ind. Bertram was instrumental in getting the Indiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association established and later ventured to Texas to get races approved at the Indiana State Fairgrounds prior to pari-mutuel racing in the state in 1997. (Giovani Vazquez-Gomez) finished second and BV Hello Darlin (Rodney Prescott) held ground along the inside to finish third to sweep the top three spots for Trainer Smith. “This horse (Beach Cartel) leaves great out of the gate for a big horse,” said Packer, who joined the Indiana Grand Quarter Horse riding colony in late summer. “He left in front and was sharp tonight. He struggled a little getting a hold of the muddy track but he overcame that and proved he was the best horse tonight.”
Mo Zoomo upsets in $82,520 Indiana Championships
Beach Cartel now has six wins in nine starts for 2015. Owned and bred by Sheri Miller of Shipshewana, Ind., he increased his career bankroll to more than $175,000 with the victory in the Bertram Memorial. Beach Cartel was unraced at two but has spent his entire career with Trainer Randy Smith, who is in a record-setting year at Indiana Grand with most wins and most purse money earned by a trainer in the history of the track. Smith has recorded 44 wins and his victory with Beach Cartel moved him past the $1 million mark in earnings for the 2015 race meet at Indiana Grand. “He (Beach Cartel) is such a good horse,” said Smith. “He always stays focused and is all about taking care of business. He struggled in an earlier race, too, with a muddy track, but he overcame that tonight.” Beach Cartel paid $3.20, $2.60, $2.40 across the board as the heavy favorite of the field. The time of the 400-yard dash was :19.933 seconds. “We absolutely loved this horse (Beach Cartel) as soon as he got off the trailer,” said Debbie during a post-race interview with Rachel McLaughlin, on-air racing personality at Indiana Grand. “He has been such a great horse for us and for Sheri. We are so excited he won tonight.” When Smith was asked how he was watching all three of his horses in the Bertram Memorial Final at one time, Smith noted, “I was just rooting for a win.” Smith and his wife, Debbie, have always had a love of horses, but it wasn’t until just a few years ago that they decided to turn their focus from their construction business into horse racing full time. They still own several businesses in Southern Illinois and retain their home in Broughton. However, with a full barn of horses, Smith now relocates to Northern Florida each winter to train and get the next crop of young horses ready for racing in Indiana. “This horse (Beach Cartel) has run his races for the year,” said Smith. “He will get turned out now to rest and come back for next year.”
INDIANA CHAMPIONSHIPS Mo Zoomo
Shazoom - Stylish Form, by The Signature Jockey: Jose M. Ruiz Trainer: Sacramento Chavez Owner: Sacramento Chavez Breeder: Vaughn & Jill Cook SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 24, 2015 – A lot of horsepower stepped onto the track Saturday, Oct. 24 for the third running of the Indiana Championships, which included 2014 Horse of the Year Pistolpacking Pepsi and the return of Jettastic, winner of the Alex Picov Memorial Championship at Ajax Downs. However, it was another horse that found his best stride in the center of the track and took home the top prize as Mo Zoomo and Jose Ruiz upset the field for the win in the 400-yard dash. Trained by Sacramento Chavez, who won a stakes race earlier in the night with Mavara Vegas, Mo Zoomo was definitely flying under the radar. The six-year-old sorrel gelding shows bad racing luck in recent starts, posting only one win in four starts for the year. But Saturday’s contest proved to be his night. Mo Zoomo had a clean break and was leading early. Jettastic was showing strong competition along the inside for Jockey Cesar Esqueda and the field is used to the high-powered

Mo Zoomo paid $18.80, $4.20, $2.60 across the board. The Oklahomabred son of Shazoom now has five career wins and purse earnings in excess of $131,000 for Chavez, who also owns the gelding. He had numerous stakes starts at Hialeah, and Chavez plans to take the horse back to Florida again this year. “We will head to Hialeah now for their season this winter,” said Chavez. “And, he (Mo Zoomo) will come back for next season at Indiana Grand.” The time of the 400-yard dash was :19.751 seconds over the muddy surface due to rain in the Shelbyville, Ind. area earlier in the day.

Fantastic Six Pack and Cristian Esqueda closed at the end to finish second, just a neck in front of Megatron Harry and Rodney Prescott for third. “He’s just like Pepsi (Pistolpacking Pepsi),” said Beltran. “He (WH Kenny G) broke really clean and ran hard. He was much better tonight.”

finishing style of Pistolpacking Pepsi and Jose Beltran, who began to surge to the front halfway through the race. In the end, Mo Zoomo had too much momentum and could not be caught by the quick closing style of Pistolpacking Pepsi, winning the race by onehalf length over the race favorite. Jettastic stayed close for third along the inside. When I saw he (Mo Zoomo) got a clean start and was on the lead in the middle of the track, I had no doubt about him winning,” said Chavez, who trains just outside Chicago. “If you give him a chance to run, he can run. He has been very unfortunate. He could have easily been a million dollar earner, he’s just had bad luck in the past.”

Trained by Ron Brown and co-owned by Brown and Robert Ray, the owners behind 2014 Horse of the Year Pistolpacking Pepsi, WH Kenny G leaves his freshman year of racing on a four-race win streak. The win also boosted his yearly earnings tally to more than $138,000. “He (WH Kenny G) is getting better and better with every start,” said Brown. “I thought he would improve tonight over his last start. He ran a little like a snake last time out, but he straightened out better tonight and (Jose) Beltran got him to the wire.” WH Kenny G, the second choice of the field by the bettors, paid $8.80, $4.40, $2.80 across the board. He was bred by Ken and Reba George of Indiana. Brown and Ray purchased WH Kenny G from the Speed Sale in Indiana last fall as a yearling for $12,000.
WH Kenny G Extends Win Streak to Four in Miss Roxie Little Futurity SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 24, 2015 – Post position five proved to be a lucky number Saturday, Oct. 24. Three of the five stakes winners broke from that post, including WH Kenny G and Jockey Jose Beltran in the eighth running of the $193,500 Miss Roxie Little Futurity, Indiana’s second richest Quarter Horse race of all time.
WH Kenny G was a winner in his trial heading into the final, but was overlooked despite being on a three-race win streak. The Gold Medal Jess two-year-old had no problems getting out of the gate and getting on task early. The gelding led from the start and fended off all challengers

“Randy (Haffner) did a great job with this filly (BP Valiant Policy),” said Prescott. “She broke really well and was able to hold on tonight all the way to the wire. Maybe the mud moved her up a little. Whatever it was it was enough to get her home.” BP Valiant Policy is owned and bred by Bill Price of Oklahoma. Price and Haffner have had a longstanding relationship in the Quarter Horse racing industry and have partnered on several horses with other owners in the past. Haffner has brought several of Price’s horses to Indiana and fared well, including BP Mighty Rare, winner of last year’s Leader of the Class Stakes at Indiana Grand. “I’m leaving Wednesday for Oklahoma to go see Bill and to take some horses out there,” said Haffner. “I’m also going to go to the sale while I’m out there.”

BP Valiant Policy Prevails in $133,160 Governor’s Stakes
BP Valiant Policy was an unexpected visitor to the winner’s circle. She paid $52.80, $16.20, $9.60 across the board as the third longest shot of the field. After two starts at Remington Park early in the season, BP Valiant Policy returns to Oklahoma with a bankroll of more than $112,000 in only seven career starts. The Governor’s Stake is one of the three original races created for the first year of pari-mutuel Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana in 1997. The Governor’s Stake was the first pari-mutuel race ever held. Haffner was the trainer of the winner, Easys Night Beat ridden by Carter Riley, who will forever be part of history for pari-mutuel Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana. This is the third win in the Governor’s Stake for Haffner, who also earned the title in 2009 with Stone Heading West, also ridden by Prescott. Haffner and Prescott have had a lot of winners together over the years. Their friendship goes back to their days at Jay County High School in Portland, Ind. In addition to running a farm and training horses with his wife, Lynn, Haffner also serves as president of the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI).
SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Oct. 24, 2015 – BP Valiant Policy has been knocking at the door all year, and she finally got the right break, winning the 19th running of the $133,160 Governor’s Stakes at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. Guided by Jockey Rodney Prescott, the twoyear-old daughter of Valiant Hero covered the 350 yard dash in a time of :17.808 seconds over the muddy track surface. Drawing the inside post one in the full field of 10 proved to be a good spot for BP Valiant Policy. The Randy Haffner trained freshman broke well as usual for Prescott and got good early positioning. She was leading the way along the inside, but several of the horses in the field are known for their closing abilities. However, the wire came too soon for the late closers as BP Valiant Policy, the pint-sized filly, earned her second win of her career by only a head over a host of horses at the wire. Fast N Famous Eagle and Rolando Pina got the best of the rest in the photo for second, finishing a neck in front of Beyondivory and Berkley Packer for third.

Clint www.clintvanvolkenburgh.bodybyvi.com
Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Welcome to New Members! Our 2015-2016 rodeo season has had an amazing kick off! We have many new members and our new board has put lots of time into getting the first few rodeos at the Clermont Lions Club up and going. We have a great group of people that are jumping right in and helping in the arena, donating items, and gathering sponsorship. A big shout out to Katie Hayes who has put in many hours on the phone and in pulling things together to raise money for our association. Katie put together a chicken chase at our October rodeo and the kids had a blast! Thank you for the Yundt/Borman family for donating the chickens!

Excited about the new season and all of our new members! Thank you to our 2015-2016 IJRA Board. Thank you for all you have done for the association and especially for all of the kids. Kelsey & Maci Stark
We are from Franklin, Indiana. Preston and I have two kids, Kelsey and Maci, two dogs, Peanut and Duke, and five horses. Kelsey comes from a rodeo family (myself, her aunt and uncle all competed in rodeo from kindergarden thru senior year, her uncle got a full ride from rodeo to Southern Arkansas University). Kelsey is in first grade and competes in barrels, poles, roping calf head, roping steer head, and mutton bustin’. Maci is in preschool and competes in barrels, poles, goat tail untie, and roping. Our favorite part of IJRA so far is watching all the young kids compete and how nice a few families have been to us welcoming us into the association. But most of all our favorite part (as parents) is watching our children compete in something they love so much. Both the girls have rodeo since they were a couple months old (being held with parents), they officially started riding by themselves when they were two.
Page 38
Kelsey has had her horse Tuff since she was 4 years old. We have competed in open barrel shows and local shows. Our family started junior rodeo to continue on the rodeo tradition in our family. Believing strongly that it teaches our young children respect for others along with respect for animals. It teaches them responsibilities, how to win and lose with a great attitude and most importantly teach them how to have fun and enjoy life.

YOUTH
This year I am competing in the 6-8 breakaway roping, chute dogging, and goat tying. My favorite is breakaway roping I have been barrel racing since I was seven years old. When I was eight years old I won the IBRA 4th Division Open Barrels at the Lewisburg, OH Thanksgiving Show. This is my first year in IJRA. I like all the new friends I have met; it’s a friendly competition and we cheer each other on. Here are some of my favorites: My favorite food is Blue Crab. My favorite TV show is Everybody Loves Raymond. My favorite subject
in school is Language Arts. I also play baseball and basketball, am involved in Student Government and Church Youth Group. My favorite hobbies are rodeo, hunting, and fishing, I would like to thank the Barricklow family for all their help and support teaching me to rodeo! Also, the Zimmerman family, we purchased Bo from them, and they have always been there for me to help.
Dakota Borman
Dakota Borman
My name is Dakota Borman. My family includes Todd, my mom, and myself. I have three horses: Mo, Billy and Bugsy. We also have a dog named Bentley and he goes to every rodeo with us. I help with the family business and I enjoy learning the values of how to be productive and make things work as a business person in the horse world. I play Volleyball and Basketball and that keeps me pretty busy. What I like about IJRA is that no matter if you win or lose you always have friends and family to support you. Doing grand-entry because it gets you pumped up and ready to RODEO. My favorite part so far is when we had the chicken race. I compete in 6,7, 8 division and I do poles, barrels, goat tying, ribbon roping, breakaway and Texas 8. My favorite event is Breakaway because it’s really challenging.
I want to thank Todd my step dad for everything he has done. I appreciate the horsemanship skills and management skills he has taught me. My family for getting me up and down the road and how they show me horses aren’t only recreation or for competition, I can make a career and living in the horse industry. Friends for always being there for me and yelling when I run. This IJRA family welcomed me right in. Thank you!

Communication When you see the word ‘communication,’ what comes to mind? Depending on who you are communicating with plays a big roll in how you perceive the word. I mean, we communicate in so many different ways these days. When communicating with people there is the old fashioned face to face conversation that involves talking - break that down and include tone of voice tone, facial expressions and body language. We now have cell phones that we can use to make a call, text or even facetime with others. We have email accounts and skype...facebook and instagram....even snapchat. Lots and lots of options. One thing that is consistent when we communicate is that there is someone (or something) whom we are communicating. In other words - it takes two (or more) to be in communication. I suppose I have been caught “talking” to myself on plenty of occasions, but I don’t think that qualifies as communication. The definition of the word even clarifies this: communication: the act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone else When communicating with our horses we use some of the same techniques as the face to face with people...voice tone & body language. We also move on to leg pressure, bit contact through our hands, weight distribution and so on when on horseback. So many different ways we communicate with our horses.
INSPIRATION
Of course sometimes in this sense, we forget that they are also communicating back to us. Sometimes all they are saying (through horse talk) is “I don’t understand.” It is our job as a good communicator to try another route to help them receive the message. If we are successful, then the conversation remains two sided and we build a good working relationship with our equine partner. If we get frustrated at the horse, they may “yell” a little louder, “I don’t understand!” At that point if we don’t realize that our method of communicating isn’t working, we may be in trouble. Remember, communication is a two way street and our horses are “talking” to us in their own way when we work with them. As a good horseman, we have to stay “in-tune” and be listening when our horses are trying to tell us something. We could miss an injury or a training issue if we are only “talking” and not listening.
Page 42
How does this apply to our lives as Christians? Start by asking this question: How am I communicating with God? What are the different ways we can communicate with God? Not the same as people and horses... but some similarities. The best way for us to start a conversation with God is by prayer. Jesus gives a good basic outline of how to pray. Matthew 6:9-13. 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. This is a good place to start, but elaborate as if you were talking to a friend (you are!) Spend time with Him in prayer and in scripture.
Do you sometimes feel like it’s a one sided conversation? Do you feel like He is there for you? He is. He has known you since before you were born. He knows your struggles, your weaknesses and strengths. He loves you. God communicates with each of us in many different ways. Just like a good horseman who will try different methods to build a relationship with his horse, God is reaching out to us through different avenues (and has been since before we even realized it.) Most importantly, He has given us His Word. If we will get engaged in the conversation and read what the scriptures have to say, we can see so much through scripture. There is a reason people call it the “Word of God.” 2 Timothy 3:16 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: Communicate with God in conversation today. I think you’ll be happy you did. Happy Trails & God Bless! Love in Christ, Christa
On the Trail
By Brother Brad Curtis of Mountain Top Cowboy Church
THE COLT A better colt couldn’t be found upon all the earth All knew He was special there in the corral, at his birth
The other ranchers were spiteful, said the colt most be tried They picked out their best cowboy, to give the colt a ride
Said I want to sell some horses from my sorry herd to you If you don’t want them, I’ll have them all turned to glue
We could not believe our eyes when he led the colt away The Boss said don’t worry he will return on the third day
From being halter broke to working in the round pen This colt as perfect in every way, without bad habits or sin
After he had rode Him, the cowboy was impressed Said when compared to all others, there is no contest
The Boss said, what will you take for the whole string I’m putting together a herd to present to a mighty king
He said, boys you will learn, there is no need to frown That is still my colt and you can’t keep perfection down.
Whatever was asked, the colt would always submit Like no other on the ranch, he simply had no quit
He will rein, rope, work cows or pleasure ride His gate is smooth, He has the perfect stride
That’s when we heard the words that made us want to revolt He sat there on his old black nag and said I’ll take the colt
As the colt grew, He was the talk across the land Most that seen Him knew, he had his fathers brand
One day the owner of the triple 6 ranch come riding in He was up to no good, you could tell by his devilish grin
You say you want the string; well they don’t come for free To be saved from the triple 6 ranch, the colt is my fee

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10
INSPIRATION
Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!
Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

Don’t Miss the Moments
I
know this is a horse magazine and I have no idea how many of you play golf. However, this story needs to be told to as many people as possible. It’s not about me or my wife. It’s not even about Mr. Overton. It’s about not missing the moments.
“These are your partners for the scramble.”
I didn’t get tired of him telling me to make putts. It sounded a little like my dad telling me to get a hit in the bottom of the 9th or make a shot as the clock ticked down to “0:00.” Dee Dee smiled every time he called her something other than her name. In fact, she liked “Lill” so much, it’s her new “scorecard name” in his honor.
I’d never met them. One was about my age – somewhere around 55 – the other was his father – all 86 years of him. I couldn’t figure out how anyone could wear a long sleeve dress shirt buttoned all the way to the top when the temperature gauge was going to push over 90.
We knew him all of five hours. We shook his hand and told him how much we enjoyed playing with him. He was as gracious as he left, as he was when we met. He told me to treat “her” (Lill, a.k.a. “Sis”, a.k.a. “Dee Dee”) right and to encourage her more.
I’d learned earlier in the morning he’d taught agriculture for more than thirty years. In fact, the man, who introduced us before teeing off, told me he was his favorite teacher. So much his favorite teacher, he had taken all the agricultural classes he could just so he could be in his class.
A few hours later, he was gone. Two golf balls and four golf tees were in his pocket. He’d spent the day with his family; and then, his body, soul and spirit said, “I think I’ll go.”
I’d known him all of fifteen minutes when I hear him say, “Johnson, it’s about time you made a putt!”
His family asked we get a call. They wanted us to know he had spent his last day playing the game he loved. He had even said he enjoyed spending time with us. I know we enjoyed him.
My challenge was five minutes after he decided my wife, Dee Dee, needed a name change. She was “Sis” for two holes; then “Lilly” for three holes; and then, shortened to “Lill” for the last fifteen holes.
I’d like to think he now strolls the luscious fairways of Augusta National; he walks past the deep sand traps of St. Andrews; and stops to enjoy the view of the Pacific from the cliffs of Pebble Beach.
He didn’t go anywhere very quickly, but he was quick witted. He didn’t hit the ball very far, but he had a twinkle in his eye you could see from the other side of the golf course. He didn’t putt very straight, but he was the kind of straight-shooter you wanted to hear talk. He didn’t keep track of the holes very well, but he always knew if one of the three golf ball and four tees he carried in his pockets was missing.
Five hours was all we had with (Roland) Keith Overton. We’ll have much longer with the memory of the time we spent together.

treat (remember last month...the big dogs got in on the treats at the door too.) The lady was out finishing up the morning chores and I heard her call for us all to head up to the house for our breakfast. Freckles, Maybel and I all ran for the house. Duke was still in the garage, snoozing - not unusual. The lady called for him and he came out and ate his treat, but the lady knew he wasn’t himself. We were hoping it was nothing serious.
We all learn as life goes on that we are only here for a short time. I think living on a farm people get an even bigger glimpse of this fact because animals (dogs included) have a much shorter life span than people. I’m not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing, but I can guarantee that the people that live here on our farm have learned to appreciate life...both their lives and those of the animals that live here with them (including mine.) We were reminded of this once again this past month. We knew something was wrong when Duke wasn’t interested in his food or a
The lady got on her phone and called the vet (that’s an animal doctor), they made him an appointment for the following day. Duke hung around the garage the rest of the day and seemed to be doing better. He even ate some food. The little girl that lives here spent some time playing with him and Freckles before the lady made sure they were tucked in their beds in the garage that night after barn chores were completed. The next morning, when we all went out to start over with the next days barn chores, the lady opened the door to let Freckles and Duke out and Good Ole Duke was gone. He had fallen asleep in his bed and didn’t wake up. He just looked like he was taking a nap.
Flashback with Bella
Last month, you’ll recall that Annie had returned home from what I thought must have been some sort of “royal ceremony.” She was wearing what I thought to be some sort of “crown” around her head. And I was sure that I had been dethroned. Well, THANK GOD! I was wrong. Although it may have been easier to just step aside and give her my self-proclaimed title of “Queen” rather than dealing with what was in store.
The next few weeks with “Precious Little Annabelle” were nothing short of torture. Evidently, the “crown” I thought she was wearing was actually some type of collar to keep her from biting at the stitches she acquired after being “fixed.” I’m not sure what they were supposed to have had fixed, but they’d better be seeing about getting their money back. I think she came back worse than she was when she left.
MaybeExcerpt She Got Fixed! from Barks N Bits, 2010
She was more whiny and pitiful than usual, lounging around and “barking orders” like she really had been crowned the new “Queen of the Ranch.” Talk about making a mouse hunting - outdoor loving - Jack-Russell Terrier- “real ranch dog” nauseous. I could hardly stand to be in the same room with her for the first few days. She would give them that “look” and it was, “Oh, poor little Annabelle.....you feelin’ bad since you got fixed?” “Do you want a treat, poor little, cute little puppy? Let me scratch your belly.” Blech. blech,.....BLECH! I like my share of attention and being scratched, but when a dog has moved from sleeping at the foot of the bed, to sleeping under the covers with their head on a pillow......something really does need to be fixed! Annie has even got one of the people convinced that she has “hands” and not feet. “Oh, look how she uses her little feet like they’re hands.” Are you kidding me?
The lady knew right away and she started to cry. I even got a little teary eyed. We all had a soft spot in our hearts for Duke. How could you not? We knew that Duke was an older dog (we’re not sure how old, since he just showed up one day.) The vet seemed to think he may have had cancer, but it could have just been age. We may never know. The people buried Duke alongside some of the other companions that have lived here over the years under a big shade tree in the back yard. They all said their last goodbyes and shed some more tears. Since this month we celebrate Thanksgiving, I want to share this last thought: I am thankful that I live with a family that appreciates life and I know that someday when it’s my time, they will cry over me too. Later,
Bella
And the blame game goes on. Annie can have a mouthful of tissue standing in the middle of a pile of Kleenex Plus (that’s the kind with lotion) and when they walk in the room the response is, “Oh, Annie wouldn’t do that!” And “Queen Bella,” the Jack Russell Terrier, quickly thinks to herself, “Of course not, she’s been fixed, right?”
