LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A Letter from the Editor

S

ummer is quickly fading into fall...where does the time go? It will be blanket season before we know it. And Halloween, Boo and Boo!

Until then we are enjoying the sunshine and summertime activities. We had a great time at the Indiana State Fair Free Stage watching one of my favorite duos, Big & Rich, entertain with a little help from Cowboy Troy. They were great and Cowboy Troy stuck around for pictures after the concert. *Side note: Big & Rich provide our music of choice when headed to a horse shows and rodeos or just riding in the truck! Not much room for words from me this month, so I’ll just leave you with this: Enjoy what’s left of summer with some friends at a fair, a rodeo. a horse show, a concert....or just take a ride on horseback together! Until next month.... I’ll enjoy the rest of my summer with friends too.... Oh, and don’t forget to count your blessings on horseback!

God Bless and Ride Safe,

A Little “Barrel Talk”

If you have visited “Barrel Talk” on BarrelHorseWorld.com, then you’ll have an idea of what to expect here. If you are not familiar with this “on-line hot spot,” be prepared to read interesting comments from other people in the horse world. We try to include topics that might be helpful and/or meaningful to our readers. To read more visit www.barrelhorseworld.com. Be advised that advice found below is not endorsed by The Horse Resource. Always check with your vet before starting any treatment.

How to Prevent Making a Bleeder tin can What are some things we can do to prevent our horses from bleeding, can they be healed? rattleandroll Main thing to prevent is conditioning and fitness for the horse. The horse has to been conditioned to what his job is. A sports medicine vet once told me that barrel racers are notorious for just going out and loping a few circles during the week but then on the weekend asking a horse to run full out. Their lungs are not conditioned to this. He suggested about once a week to sprint 250 yards or so. Build up capillary strength. Runninbay To my knowledge there is nothing that can prevent a horse from becoming a bleeder. Most horses that sprint - like race horses and barrel horses - will bleed. Some bleed more often than others. Causes range from the air temperature, to the hardness of the ground they are running on, and sometimes just the anatomy of a particular horse. Coughing during/after a horse runs is a well known sign, as well as slowing down prematurely. And obvioulsly bleeding from the nose is a sure sign. There are ways to treat it. Lasix is the most popular method and some people believe it is the only way. However, even Lasix does not stop it completely. Nasal strips are also a great tool to make sure they are able to get the oxygen they need and take some stress off the respiratory system. rachellyn80 Conditioning is key... Most bleed-

Page 4

ers that I’ve been around are not truly fit before they are asked to perform. Once a horse bleeds, they are more predisposed to bleeding again, but that’s not to say that they can’t be made healthier. Dust and allergies also play a role, as well as humidity I’m sure. Lingering respiratory issues...You just have to know your horse and pay attention to what they’re telling you. An alley issue will always start out as anxiety. 3rdtimesacharm My vet said the same thing. He rides polo horses, he said if you keep them fit they won’t bleed. I feed oats. I took one of mine off oats and he started bleeding, put him back on oats and he stopped. Never had a bleeder on oats. Runninbay I have to disagree to an extent about keeping them fit. Yes, I’m sure it helps a ton but I know of two horses that bleed that are in great shape! So I’m not convinced that will keep them from bleeding. sixpatches The one I had bleed on me was in fantastic shape. Had a track vet and the first words out his mouth was there is no way it is a fitness issue.I do believe they better be in shape or they will but that isn’t the only cause. KylaKris While I think them being in shape does help, nutrition is the biggest factor to me in helping prevent or to keep one under control. Horses’ bodies are designed to graze most of the day with a constant variety

of vegetation. When we keep them stalled up getting straight alfalfa with sweet feed day in and day out, how can you expect their body to be healthy. Horses are not meant to tolerate these kinds of feeds, especially those with molasses or other high sugar content. IMO, if you take a look at your feed program you will get better answers. cow pie Feed to win is a great book to have. I know of several race trainers that don’t have bleeders. Nutrition is one. The other is common sense knowing when to stop before blowing out the capilaries. Griz I’d second this, look at ALL the extremely fit racehorses who bleed. miss_n_cinch13 Although, in my opinion, oats are a better feed options, they will not keep one from bleeding. KylaKris I agree with this. If you look at what they are being fed rather than how conditioned they are, it will give you a better idea of why they might bleed. jewishprincess IMO only. I disagree. Yes. Racehorses are fit. BUT. How often do they blow them out like they do during a race? yes they breeze them during the week. But when racing, they are full out sprinting for the win. Same with barrel horses. I’m sure respitory issues can play a factor. But IMO it’s a matter of conditioning the LUNGS.***notice I didn’t say the horse***you have to

condition the lungs for sprinting. loping doesn’t do that. only sprinting does. Lmichaels I have a bleeder and for mine - I try #1 to keep him pain free. As pain can cause your blood pressure to go up increasing the risk of bleeding. I avoid dust and dusty areas as much as possible. I dont clean stalls or sweep the barn while he is near it and that has helped a bunch. I wet his hay too. I give him MSM daily to help with any inflammation in airway. I give mine lasix and kentucky red when he runs, We ride him 5 days a week and do some sprints during the week too to keep his lungs conditioned.I rest him for a few weeks every 3-4 months to give his lungs a break and time to heal if any issues are going on and I like to give him time off from the lasix and kentucky red just to let his body reset itself I try not to keep him in the stall too much as I want him out with his head down so the nasal cavities can drain naturally. I feed all mine on the ground as well as hay on the ground in tubs Biggest thing to me is you have a bleed occur to give them time off and do antibiotics and a trachea wash if your vet can do it.

Fun with Freckles... & #catselfies

We helped the lady clean out the chicken house. (That was a sad day for all of us, especially the lady, since Chuck isn’t here anymore.) I think the lady is considering getting more chickens. I never did understand why she liked Chuck so much - he chased her more than any of the other people around here. They had a weird understanding. While the lady cleaned, Freckles and I looked for mice. We caught a few that dared to test our mousing skills. Of course the cats were nowhere to be found when there was work to be done...probably somewhere taking catselfies.

This month I thought I’d fill you in on the adventures that Freckles and I have had recently. We always have a great time together. She is such a quiet dog that I sometimes forget she is here. Unless she wants the people to throw a golf ball...then she is almost as bad as Duke at supper-time with her barking! She loves to chase the golf ball and brings it right back to chase it again. I just sit back and watch her. I suppose that she would be a golfer’s dream dog, hmmm? Freckles and I did a lot of fun stuff this past month. We went mole hunting with the lady of the farm. We didn’t catch any moles, but got really muddy in the process of looking! Freckles and I like to hunt moles even when the lady isn’t helping. It’s really fun until you get a nose full of dirt.

Speaking of kitties here’s another #catselfie from Sully himself...he’s such a camera hog! We also kept up the regular farm patrolling/ guard dog duties. I usually leave that to Freckles and Duke, but I’ve been pitching in more now that the weather is nice. Come winter they can have that job back. I’m a fair weather guard dog and will be inside with Miss Maybelline when the snow starts to blow.

Flashback with Bella

Freckles also got to take her first solo trip to a horse show with the people. She filled me in on it when she got home and showed me some pics of the new friends she made. She is quite a people pup...me not so much. She loves attentiona and cuddles - she can have them all. I do like the idea of going to a horse show with Freckles. She can do all the socializing while I do all the snoozing.

That’s it for this month.... Oh, and just in case you didn’t figure out where all the kitty names came from last month...it was Monsters, Inc (the movie.)

The Story of “Princess Annabelle” Continues

Excerpt from Barks N Bits, 2010

So, last month I let you all in on how Annie has earned the blessing of the “table scrap gods.” How she has managed to get both of us some good eats from our people....and how I was thinking that because of this it wasn’t so bad having her around. The rush of calories must’ve fogged my judgment. I digress. I am back to “tolerating” the little “black barkbox” honing in on my territory. She seems to gain attitude with each passing day and I cannot believe that she almost had me hooked with the “food face” she uses to get the good stuff. (Although, I will admit that she has aided in the aquisition of a pork chop bone or a piece of bacon for yours truly.....she does not and will not ever have this Jack Russell fooled.) I have to watch my back. I can tell you that much. I know what she is up to, and I know you will say...”Oh, Bella, you are overreacting, she is just a cute little weenie.” But I am onto her. Incident #1: I used to have a nice little bed that was all mine. I used to spend time all snuggled up in front of the fire in my bed. Until Annie came along, that is. My people brought a bed home for her to use so

I wouldn’t have to share. Cute little Annie decided that my bed suited her better and then she decided that it’s innards would serve a better purpose on the oustide and proceeded to pull the stuffing all out. After a couple of unsuccessful sewing repairs, my bed has since found it’s way into the trash barrel. Score one for Annie. I am starting to keep tabs and have a couple of other things to report to you, but I will have to include them next month. I don’t want Annie to know that I am onto her. For now, she is still including me in the fruits of her begging sprees with the “food face.” Keep it on the down low.

From Steve Heuertz’s “Belmont Stake 146” article published in The “Fast” Horse Resource:

“...the Triple Crown is, in many ways, purposefully designed as exceedingly difficult and possibly even unfair. In fact, it is this difficulty that makes it so special and one of the rarest accomplishments in sports. Changing this format would essentially cheapen the experience and allure that is the Triple Crown. Instead, it’s inherent difficulty is what draws us back to it, continually waiting for the one to receive the baton passed from Affirmed. Until then, we will continue to wait, for as long as it takes.”

The wait is over. Coming next month in The “Fast” Horse Resource -

News Coyote Rock Ranch Veterinary Scholarships Available in 2016

AQHA members studying veterinary science have the opportunity to earn one of two $75,000 Coyote Rock Ranch Veterinary Scholarships; the deadline to apply is December 1.

An avid horsewoman and generous donor to the American Quarter Horse Foundation, Penny Knight of Hillsboro, Oregon, has recently created the Coyote Rock Ranch Veterinary Scholarship. Two $75,000 scholarships will be awarded to fourth-year veterinary students who intend to pursue a career through an equine-focused veterinary practice upon graduation. Knight is a strong advocate for horse health and hopes that with the help of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, she can offer this great opportunity to benefit our next generation of veterinarians. “I created this scholarship to help like-minded individuals who are pursuing their dream in equine veterinary medicine,” Knight said. “Helping future veterinarians is one way I am able to give back to the industry I hold dear to my heart, and I will continue my support for years to come.”

volvement, as well as the applicant’s outstanding leadership and communication skills. For veterinary related scholarships, AQHF and AAEP are partnering to ensure eligible applicants are aware of major scholarships. Deadline to apply is December 1, 2015. The Coyote Rock Ranch Veterinary Scholarship is just one of many American Quarter Horse Foundation scholarship opportunities offered each year. The Foundation provides financial assistance to AQHA and American Quarter Horse Youth Association members through general, career-path and state or regional scholarships. CHALEE GILLILAND MEMORIAL

Barrels &Bling 2015 C Bar C Expo Center - Cloverdale, Indiana Oh Wow!!

C Bar C in Cloverdale, Indiana was the place to be for the third annual Barrels and Bling Memorial barrel race over the July 4th holiday weekend!! Participants from 13 states showed up and over 1,255 barrel and pole runs were made! Ninety-five Pee Wees competed for the B&L Saddles that were awarded to the Pee Wee divisional winners! What a class!

Friday Winners

Rhoda Carnahan and Sharp and Sassy swept the weekend winning all three days of Open Barrels and the side pot Master Barrels. Rhoda and Sassy posted the fastest time of the weekend and were awarded the fastest time halter hand tooled by Mary Wagner! There was a lot of barrel racing and pole bending going on, but the favorite event was the photo booth! This year the silent auction brought $4,000 that was giving to a three year old young man with B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This little boy has spent the last three months going to Riley Children’s Hospital weekly for chemo treatments. His family was one of the first few families Chalee met when she started in junior rodeo. This was the first year that KISS (Kentucky Indiana Speed Stallions) gave incentive money to both the Open Pole class on Friday and the Open Barrel Class on Saturday. Winning $1,250 in the Poles was TT Redneck Rickibobby, owned by Eric Schulkers, and ridden by Trent Tobin. Wining $2,750 for the Barrels was Lexi Gonterman riding Leo’s Packin Jet, owned by Lexi Gonterman. A check of $1,339 was given to the Chalee Foundation. All made possible from selling breedings on the online KISS Stallion Service Auction. Thank you KISS. Go check them out at www.kissstallions.com Friday night started the show with 95 pole benders in the open and youth poles, then on to 348 in the open barrels with side pots running all night.

Thank you to Brad Johnson and his 2015 NPBA Champion Pole mare, Stylish French Fire, for sponsoring Team Bling 2015! Next we all were treated to 11 year old Cami Moriarity and her 19 year old barrel horse, Beetlejuice, doing some fantastic tricks like the Hipppodrome, Indian Hideaway, Cossack (suicide drag) and the Saddle Layover in their trick riding routine.

The National Anthem was performed, acapella, by Casey Sparks and the benediction was, again, wonderfully and eloquently spoken by Jon Hemmer. Jon Hemmer preached and Richard Smith provided the musical blessings at Cowboy Church to start our Sunday and refreshed us for the long day ahead.

Our photographer and webcaster was Brent Puhl, please visit his website at http://puhlsphotography.com Once again, the barrel racing community has shown the love and compassion to support a family and a foundation! Thank you all who volunteered, who shopped, who came to visit and watch, and those who ran!! A huge thank you to our sponsors who might not even know what barrel racing is about! Without all of you, we could not have achieved all that we did!! Chalee Gilliland was an 11 year old barrel racer that had Cystic Fibrosis, a life threatening genetic disease that causes severe damage to the lungs and digestive system. Chalee passed away suddenly and without warning on September 22, 2012. Her parents, Robert and Susan, created a foundation to honor its 11-year-old namesake’s endless spirit by inspiring and empowering those with the greatest needs. The Chalee Gilliland Foundation, Inc. is specifically driven to provide financial and emotional support to those with Cystic Fibrosis, the barrel racing community, and animal organizations.

BARREL RACING

This month I would like to highlight our 1D TOP DOG team. That would be the duo of Angie Cunningham and TDL Smoke N Ice. Angie bought and started training Smoke N Ice, aka “Joker,” for barrels in October 2012. Angie says she really loves training barrel horses and that Smoke N Ice is a lot of fun when he gives her a good run. “Usually, when I do my part, he does what I trained him to do and he makes it all look easy. I always enjoy trying to get the best run I can with my horses and even if I don’t end up winning, it still feels great,” stated Angie. I asked Angie if she would recommend the barrel racing sport for families. “Yes, I love the competition of barrel racing. I also enjoy going and spending time with friends and having my daughters show with me. Barrel racing is great family sport and everyone is so supportive.”

Indiana State Show Championships Preview Featuring Indiana 1D Top Dog, Angie Cunningham Well, I don’t know about everyone else, but I had a great time at the State Show this year. I appreciate everyone’s patience with me as I go through my cancer treatments. Everyone was great! Next month, Jessie Jameson will write about the state show in the Horse Resource INDIANA IBRA pages.

The only other comment Angie added is that she is looking forward to the IBRA Nationals in October. It should be great fun! Indiana IBRA State Director Linda Stapleton

Since acquiring Mavara Vegas, her connections have tallied two wins in two starts with purse earnings just under the $50,000 mark. The win in the Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby marks her first try against stakes company, setting her up nicely for the remainder of the season at Indiana Grand. “We will bring her back for the other Derby coming up at Indiana Grand,” said Chavez. “Then, we have plans to take her to Hialeah this winter.”

FDD Dynasty- Jess Like Vegas, By Mr Jess Perry Jockey: Jose Ruiz Trainer: Sacramento Chavez Owner: Alejandro Medina Breeder: Dunn Ranch Ltd

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 1, 2015 – She was the fastest trial winner leading into the $71,840 Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby and Mavara Vegas proved she was the fastest overall, taking home the title by a neck over Fast Man Vic and Alvaro HernandezLopez Saturday, Aug. 1 during the third all-Quarter Horse racing program for 2015 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. Mavara Vegas and Jockey Jose Ruiz avoided any issues coming out of the gate and found a clear path to get in gear for the 400 yard dash. Mavara Vegas took the lead early and put pressure on the remainder of the nine horse field to chase her down as the field neared the wire. Fast Man Vic had the best chance to catch her but came up short by a neck at the finish line in a time of :19.807 seconds. Eye Popping and Jose Beltran rallied from the outside to finish third.

The stakes win with Mavara Vegas is the first for Chavez at Indiana Grand. Chavez, who also runs at Prairie Meadows, oversees the training of 22 horses at his farm. Growing up around horses, he is an electrician by trade and obtained his trainer’s license four years ago. He is well on his way to showing his career change to Quarter Horse racing was a good move.

The California-bred Mavara Vegas is owned by Alejandro Medina and is trained by Sacramento Chavez. The chestnut daughter of FDD Dynasty is now two for two for her new connections. “The owner (Medina) bought her last fall and she (Mavara Vegas) was hurt and we didn’t even know if she would race,” said Chavez, who is based out of his farm in Grant Park near Kankakee in northern Illinois. “She had a small chip in her knee but this year she was sound. We had x-rays done and everything was fine so we decided to try to race her. I was pretty sure she would race good tonight, but I didn’t know she would win.”

In the late stages of the race, Beach Cartel began to stretch out his stride and got an advantage over Stinkin Rich, winning by three-quarters of a length. Ms Fool Me Once stayed steady for third. Beach Cartel paid $5.00, $3.20, $2.60 across the board as the race favorite. Beach Cartel, owned and bred by Sheri Miller, is now three for five in his brief career. Unraced at two, the grey gelding has earned in excess of $96,000.

BLUE RIVER DERBY - Beach Cartel Escondido Beach - Flashin Dee Dee, by First to Flash Jockey: Juan Guerrero Trainer: Randy Smith Owner: Sheri Miller Breeder: Sheri Miller

Beach Cartel Tough in Blue River Derby SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 1, 2015 – The team of Trainer Randy Smith and Jockey Juan Guerrero scored their second stakes win of the night Saturday, Aug. 1 when Beach Cartel reeled in the title of the 13th running of the $122,700 Blue River Derby at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The duo covered the 400-yard distance in a time of :20.126 seconds to provide Smith and Guerrero with a training and riding triple on the third all-Quarter Horse racing program of 2015. Horses were loaded into the gate awaiting just a few horses to step in when Hand of Doom, one of the top choices in the race, became fractious. As a result, the field was backed out and Hand of Doom was scratched, providing a slight delay before the running of the Blue River Derby. Horses were reloaded and the three horses on the inside, which included Beach Cartel in the middle, broke smoothly en route to the finish line. Massive bumping took place from the starters on the outside, giving an advantage early on to the trio of horses on the inside. Ms Fool Me Once and Cristian Esqueda kept close tabs on Beach Cartel from the inside while Stinkin Rich and Shanley Jackson applied pressure to the leader from the outside. The latter two proved to be the two to catch as the wire neared.

Smith is now in his second year with Guerrero as part of his team. The two hooked up before the start of the meet at Indiana Grand last year, earning both the training and riding titles in the Quarter Horse ranks. Smith set a record last year with 28 wins in one season, a record he is sure to reset in 2015. Guerrero is in the same situation, currently sitting at 24 wins for the year with the mark of 28 wins set by Harold Collins in 2013 well within his reach just halfway through the 2015 racing season. “Juan (Guerrero) is part of that good help in the barn,” said Smith. “He is there every morning at 5 a.m. and works very hard. We go to a farm in Florida during the winter and he breaks all the babies, so he has been with this horse (Beach Cartel) since the very beginning.” The Smith Team was busy once again during the all-Quarter Horse racing night, starting 14 horses over nine races. In all, Smith has a 64-horse stable and shuffles them in and out during the racing season. “We have a couple of farms around here we utilize,” said Smith. “This horse (Beach Cartel) will get some time off now so he can just be a horse. The next race for him will be the SSA Derby (Stallion Service Auction Derby Sept. 12).” Smith’s team also includes his wife, Debbie, who continues to manage the family’s other businesses back at their home in Broughton, Ill. The Smiths were involved in construction before they shifted into Quarter Horse racing full time about four years ago. The win with Beach Cartel was the third on the night for the Smith Stable. They also picked up wins in the $35,440 2015 Speed Sale Stakes with My Louisiana Rod as well as a $17,500 allowance race with BV Hello Darlin in the third race.

“He (Beach Cartel) started out rough, but a light came on as a three-year-old and he hasn’t backed up since,” said Smith, who is primed to set a new record for most wins in one season as a trainer, already earning 27 wins this year. “He’s a good keeper and he gets the same care as the rest of them. But I have to credit my help. You can have the best horse in the world, but without good help, you won’t get far.”

WH Design By Dash Extends Win Streak to Three in Leader of the Class Stakes SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 1, 2015 – WH Design by Dash and Jockey Victor Olivo know each other well. Olivo has been aboard the four-year-old son of Brimmstone in all but one of his 20 lifetime starts. The duo teamed up once again Saturday, Aug.1 to earn another stakes win in the third running of the $34,480 Leader of the Class Stakes at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. WH Design by Dash was caught a little off guard when the gates sprung open, moving a step slow from the gate. However, he knew what to do once the race began and got into gear with his big stride to close in gracefully and pass up the competition for the win by one half length over Cant Catcha Corona and Juan Guerrero, who had led nearly every step of the 350-yard dash along the inside. Sparky McClone and Shanley Jackson got the best of the rest in a tight photo for third. “He (WH Design by Dash) was leaning in the gate at the break,” said Olivo. “All the other jockeys did a good job of keeping straight and he was able to get going.”

The third running of the Leader of the Class Stakes was part of the third night in 2015 dedicated to all Quarter Horse racing at Indiana Grand. To complement the race card, the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana (QHRAI) provided school supplies to kids along with several drawings, including

Genetic Testing - Part 2 WHAT ARE THESE GENETIC DISEASES? SYMPTOMS? TREATMENTS?

GBED or Glycogen branching enzyme deficiency doesn’t allow a foal to store enough sugar in its cells for energy, and it usually dies before 2 months of age. These foals are often still born. It is caused by an autosomal recessive disease caused by mutation in the GBE1 gene. GBED affects approximately 8-10 % of American Quarter Horses. An estimated 3 or more percent of second- and third-term abortions or stillbirths are caused by GBED.

The mutation of the GBE1 gene reduces the function of the glycogen branching enzyme so that cardiac and skeletal muscle and the liver and the brain cannot store and mobilize glycogen. Because glycogen provides energy to the muscles, the inability to properly store and mobilize it leads to muscle weakness and eventually death. GBED results in second- and third-term abortions and stillborn foals. Many aborted and stillborn foals whose cause of death was not previously identified might have had GBED. Foals that survive birth generally die or are euthanized within 8 weeks of age. Although a few foals have survived to the age of 4 months, GBED is always fatal.

The horse in the picture is positive for HERDA. Picture compliments of AQHA.

HERDA or hereditary equine regional dermal asthenia causes the skin on a horse’s back to peel away. Early signs include the presence of weeping skin, easily tented skin that doesn’t return to its initial position, sloughing skin, hematomas, wounds, and scars. The disorder is caused by an autosomal recessive disease caused by a mutation in the peptidyl-prolylisomerase B gene. Approximately 3.5 percent of American Quarter Horses are carriers. Collagen makes up connective tissues such as muscles, bones, skin and cartilage. The mutation in the PPIB gene results in defective collagen that causes the outer layer of the skin to divide from the layer underneath. Many times raw wounds are caused by the outer layer of skin sloughing off. Young horses with HERDA might appear to have an unusual number of cuts and nicks on their skin, but the disease is most often noticed then the horse starts training under saddle. The pressure of the saddle on the back causes the skin to tear and separate, leaving raw areas. These areas are slow to heal,

Page 30

and many horses with HERD Aare euthanized due to slow-healing injuries. HYPP or hyperkalemic periodic paralysis is a muscle condition that leads to uncontrolled muscle twitching or profound muscle weakness. In severe cases, it can lead to collapse and death. HYPP traces back to the stallion Impressive. HYPP was seen in Impressive’s sons and daughters, because to be expressed, the disease does not require two copies of the defective gene. However, successive generations of offspring that received two defective genes often show more severe versions of the disease. The disorder is caused by nn autosomal dominant disease caused by point mutation in the SCN4A gene. It affects approximately 1.5 percent of all Quarter Horses and as many as 56 percent of all halter horses. HYPP affects both horses and humans. The genetic defect causes a disruption of the sodium ion channel which is a tiny gateway in the membrane of muscle cells. The genetic defect disrupts the channel’s normal opening and closing, such that uncontrolled sodium influxes occur. These influxes, in turn, change the voltage current of muscle cells, causing uncontrolled muscle twitching or profound muscle weakness. High levels of potassium in the blood usually are present when the disruptions in the ion channel occur. This disruption in the conduction of the nerve impulses causes muscle tremors and even temporarily paralysis in affected horses. In severe cases, HYPP can cause collapse or sudden death. As the following guidelines demonstrate, a horse that has HYPP demands special care and the special care increases time and financial costs. There are certain management practices that assist in the control of HYPP. They include establishing a regular feeding and exercise schedule. Fasting and water deprivation should be avoided. Horses do better if allowed access to a paddock or pasture rather than strict stall confinement. Daily or nightly turnout is helps in preventing symptoms. Adult horses do very well on grass or oat hay alone or pasture. If it is necessary to use alfalfa to balance the ration for growing horses, then mix alfalfa with grass hay or oat hay and grain with oats being the best grain to decrease potassium content of diet. Feed equal amounts of hay and grain two or three times daily. Rapid changes in die should be avoided. Provide access to a white salt block or feed loose salt. Administer acetazolamide, a diuretic that decreases the level of potassium in the blood. Many halter horse owners continue alfalfa hay as the only roughage, but maintain their horses on this drug for all or most of their lives. Acetazolamide is a forbidden substance under AQHA and AHSA regulations. Your veterinarian should always be informed of the HYPP condition prior to any general anesthesia, which might precipitate an episode of paralysis. Maintain acetazolamide therapy before and after surgery or anesthesia. Always err on the side of being conservative while hauling. Be sure to stop and water horses every two hours. If a horse shows mild symptoms exercise the horse either by walking or longing. Exercise stimulates adrenaline, which helps replace potassium inside cells. However, one should use caution as the horse could stumble and fall while having muscle tremors. Feeding grain such as oats, dry corn,-oats, barley, or light Karo syrup for glucose supplement stimulates the release of insulin and promotes potassium uptake by cells. Administering acetazolamide orally (3 mg/kg) increases potassium excretion from the kidney and also affects glucose metabolism. For severe attacks call your veterinarian who may treat with fluid therapy and administration of calcium gluconate IV, dextrose 5% IV and insulin.

There are two types of PSSM. Genetic testing determined that some horses with PSSM had a specific mutation in GYS1. This is PSSM Type 1. Other horses did not have the mutation in the GYS1 gene and these are the PSSM Type 2. Horses identified as having a moderate to severe form of the disease according to the muscle biopsy were more likely to have PSSMType 1 than horses with a milder version of the disease. Type1 PSSM defines horses with a GYS1 mutation and these are mostly seen in Quarter Horse, Paint, and Appaloosa purebreds or crosses, draft breeds, Morgans, and Tennessee Walking Horses. Type 2 PSSM is found in a variety of other breeds, and its cause is not yet known. It is believed the disease is to have arisen from a single horse about 1,200-1,500 years ago. While the physical attributes of affected horses vary widely, the extent of the muscle metabolic problem ranges from unrecognized subclinical disease to overt exertional rhabdomyolysis (tying up) to recumbency that necessitates euthanasia. 8% of Quarter Horses have the GYS1 mutation. Re-evaluation of horses tested by muscle biopsy and found to have indicated that about 75% of PSSM Quarter Horses had the GYS1 mutation.

Cowboy mounted shooting is a re-enactment of the old west 1880’s. It is the nation’s fastest growing equestrian sport. Competitors wearing two single action .45 caliber revolvers race against the clock through a variety of course patterns while firing at balloon targets. Each revolver is loaded with five rounds of specially prepared blank ammunition. Scoring is based on the elapsed time plus penalties for each missed balloon or knocked over barrel. This sport requires the ability to control the horse through many turns and speed changes while cocking and firing the revolvers, holstering one when it’s empty, and then drawing the other to complete the course.

IS NOT THE ABILITY TO WAIT, BUT THE ABILITY TO KEEP A GOOD ATTITUDE WHILE WAITING. Any one else in your fmaily ride? No one else In my family rides now. My dad rode Tennessee Walking Horses when he was younger. How long have you been riding? How did you get started? In 2008 grandmother passed away. She was always telling my dad to buy me a pony because she thought that was all a little girl needed. I had always had a love for horses but never really thought about riding until 2011. I began taking lessons at a nearby barn and joined a drill team. I quickly fell in love and bought my first horse, Mister. I always had a passion for barrel racing but I didn’t know anything about it and my horse was new to it as well. I quit drill team this year to pursue my passion of barrel racing. I sold my horse and bought my current barrel horse, Red Bent Bug, or Tris. Tell us about your horses... Red Bent Bug, aka Tris, is a 12 year old Appendix mare. She is solid black, around 15.2hh, and very stocky. I’ve only owned her for about 2 and a half months. She is a very nosy girl, always into everything! I’ve never ridden a horse with such a passion for what she does. She loves her job and gives it everything she’s got every time I run her. She’s such a fun horse to work with. She’s gotten me so far in the short time I’ve had her and given me a lot of confidence to do this. Accomplishments? In the short time I’ve had her I haven’t been able to show her a whole lot. The first show I rode her at was in Madison, Indiana. I placed first in the 2D and won $330. I’ve shown her at a few other shows always placing in the top 5 of the 2D. To qualify for the 4H horse show you have to show at your district show and qualify. I placed top 5 in all my classes, qualifying me for state in every class! At the state show I won my barrel division!

Goals? I have a lot of goals for my career! I hope to be able to ride in pro rodeo and make it to the NFR. I’m going to Quarter Horse Congress this fall and a goal of mine is to win a class there. I’m also aiming towards making it to the NBHA worlds.

Favorites

Favorite barrel racer and why? My favorite barrel racer is Fallon Taylor. She’s an awesome rider and she is who she wants to be. She is in the pro rodeo and won the NFR in 2014. She always has a way of standing out and being herself and I think that’s a hard thing to do these days but she rocks it. I look up to her a lot. What would you like improved in barrel racing? I would like to improve a lot in barrel racing since I just got started. I would love to start placing in the 1D. Me and my horse have a lot of work to do together but I know we can get there! What is your favorite thing about barrel racing? My favorite thing about barrel racing would have to be the rush it gives you. It’s only the 16 seconds that you’re in there but they’re so important and crucial. I have a need for speed and this fills it.

Mentor? I have a lot of mentors that help me succeed! My first mentor is Sheila Jones. She is the owner of the barn where I board my horse and a great barrel racer. She sold me Tris and is always helping me out whenever she can. She never lets a bad run bring her down and she always keeps going. She’s helped me with so much already and I’m glad to have her there for me! Another mentor of mine is Clint Vanvolkenburgh. He has helped me out a lot and worked with my horse as well. He’s taught me a lot about barrel racing and I know he always has tips and pointers to give me. A very important mentor to me is my best friend, Anna Doll. We met eachother through drill team and we immediately became good friends. We are always helping eachother and being supportive. She is very helpful to me, always picking me up when I’m down, showing me the bright side, making me hurt from laughing, and pushing me forward. She is also beginning to barrel race so we’re starting all of this together. She’s an amazing person that I’m glad to call my best friend.

Other hobbies? I don’t have many hobbies, horses take up all my time lol. One thing I really enjoy is finding new music and listening to it. I do that in all my free time. I’m always listening to new music and getting involved in it! Plans after high school? As far as my plans for after high school, well they’re totally unsolved yet. I know for sure I want to go to college and major in something to do with Equine. I would love to train horses or be a professional rider. Any advice to fellow competitors? Advice I always give is to not worry about what others think of you and your horse! it’s all about having fun! I was always too nervous to show before I purchased Tris because I knew there was always better people than me. But you have to start somewhere and have fun with the ride! -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Enjoy the Ride,

Clint Van

www.clintvanvolkenburgh.bodybyvi.com

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Join us for the 25th Anniversary Season of the Indiana Junior Rodeo Association

C

alling all Barrel Racers, Pole Benders, Ropers, Goat Tyers, Rough Stock Riders and cowboys and cowgirls in Indiana who are in Kindergarten through the 8th grade. The new IJRA season is starting back up again and will be holding their first rodeo of the season in Clermont, IN on September 12th and 13th. We are excited to meet our new members and hope if you would like to join us you will contact a board member or speak with a current IJRA member. Here are some commonly asked questions that may get you started in seeing if IJRA is a great fit for a Junior High aged person you know.

What is IJRA?

The Indiana Junior Rodeo Association is an association for boys and girls in Indiana or surrounding states that are in Kindergarten – 8th grade. IJRA was founded in 1989 and incorporated in 1990 with the intension of better educating and promoting the sport of rodeo for youth in Indiana. This year is the 25th anniversary for our association and we still have families and members who strive to build skills that our children can use in High School Rodeo and beyond. Our association also promotes the building of character and sportsmanship in our young

cowboys and cowgirls. We stress responsibility, cooperation, and good conduct in our participants. We see IJRA as a way to help out children develop into outgoing and productive individuals in the ir communities.

What events can my child compete in and who do they compete against?

Our age divisions are broken down based on grade level. Kids in Kindergarten, First, and Second grade compete together and are broken down into a Boys and Girls Division. Kids in Third, Fourth, and Fifth grades are also compete in a division that is also broken down into Boys and Girls events. Members in Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth grade also have their own division which is divided by Boys and Girls events as well. In some of the events such as Team Roping, boys and girls compete together in that for the year end championship. Each division has its own events that kids can compete in based on what is offered to that age division. All three of the age divisions have an All-Around Champion in both boys and girls at the end of the year. For information on what events are available to each age division, please go to our website at www.injra.org and look for the Membership Tab and then click on Membership Forms. Events offered include: barrel racing, pole bending, roping events, goat tying, and rough stock events.

IJRA News How much does IJRA cost?

How often do you rodeo and how many days?

IJRA usually competes one time a month for a weekend. Slack is normally run in the morning and then the performance at night. Each day is considered one rodeo, you can compete one day or both. Most families come in on Friday, stay overnight and then compete on Saturday and Sunday. If your family can only fit in one day a weekend, then that works too. IJRA usually has rodeos from the start of the season in September until October, then we break for the winter. Spring rodeos usually start up around April and then the season ends with the State Finals in August.

YOUTH

Each family pays a $30 membership fee each year which is good for all contestants in that family. Each event has an entry fee which can be found in the Membership forms under the Membership Tab. Entry fees can range from $10$25 per event. There are other fees such as a timer fee, sometimes an arena fee, electric fees if needed and offered, insurance fee, and sometimes stall fees if available. Each member is asked to bring in $150 in sponsorship money to assist with awards, sponsorship can be acquired all at once at one business or by finding some smaller sponsorships that total $150.

Why should our family join IJRA?

There are many reasons why joining IJRA is a great thing for your family. Our association gives the kids the chance to compete with other kids their age after they practice all month. IJRA encourages kids to work harder and work together. Rodeo isn’t the only great thing about IJRA, most families will tell you that the reason they are members are because of the experiences their kids have while being part of the association. The kids want to come to the rodeos to see their friends from all over the state that love to do the same thing they love to do. They compete together and they play together. Families cheer each other on in and out of the arena. IJRA is what families do together, they sleep in tight quarters, they work together to load and unload the trailer, get together for carry in dinners and eat as a rodeo family with all of the other families, and they build lasting friendships with other parents or kids. For more information please check out or website at www. injra.org. You can find a lot of necessary information on there or also feel free to contact a Board Member directly to have your questions answered.

The Stupid Rats Keep Winning

T

here’s nothing wrong with what you’re doing. You’re anything but lazy. You’re providing. You’re taking care of others. Look up “responsible adult” in the dictionary. It’s you, my friend, who are pictured there.

When they died, you said “I’ve got to slow down”. You promised to those around you, “I’ll stop and smell the roses.” Maybe, you did for a day or two. It might have been a few weeks or months.

And yet, the stupid rats are still winning!

And yet, the rats are still winning.

They saw you coming. You were just walking along; minding your own business; enjoying life. They opened up the door and invited you in. Their talk of success and recognition was so enticing you didn’t even notice the cage.

You stepped back up on the wheel. It’s exhausting. It’s self-sustaining. Each success brings a brief sense of accomplishment, the crush of exhaustion and the realization you must keep moving forward. “Keeping up with the Jones’” pushes you. New payments on something new keep you spinning. The “want” of something newer and better keeps you pushing forward.

The wheel was right there. You stepped up on it with anticipation. Others you respected said, “Go ahead! Step up there. It’ll be fun!” You didn’t see the glaze covering their eyes. It only took one step. Ahhhhhhh, accomplishment! Ohhhhhh, success! You took another and another; it moved faster and faster. In a few weeks, a month, a year, you found yourself running. You tried to stop. You wanted to stop. Unfortunately, the pace had become uncomfortably comfortable and you had become “comfortably numb”. The stupid rats were winning!

Don’t have any! I wish I did. I’m too busy on my wheel next to you. Even writing about stupid rats is part of keeping my wheel going. All I can say is “I am sorry”. I really wish I could help. Like you, I know I need to step off. It is absurd, but has become normal. It’s unacceptable, but my choice. It’s demanding and rewarding. And, I feel stuck! Those stupid, stupid, stupid rats; they just keep winning.

CHRISTIAN COWBOY COLLECTION

By Christa Conway

Know When to Fold’em... Last month we talked about knowing when to hold’em. This month we move on to knowing when to fold’em, walk away and sometimes even to run. Last month focused on pressure and the release of pressure...timing is everything for young horses and (potential) young believers. And God’s timing is perfect. From last month: “When too much pressure is applied to many young horses, they will react by fighting back - so will people. Psalms 32:9 Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee. I have started young horses that took right to the saddle and bit and never even thought about fighting. I have also started other young horses (with the same basic program) that fought me every step of the way and took days or weeks to get past the bucking fits.” I’ll add here that there have been a few of those from the latter bunch that ended up being more rank or difficult than I had the time, skill or patience to deal with. I had to realize that I wasn’t the right one to bring them to their potential and call on some help. Some of those difficult ones went on to other trainers and with a different approach were able to meet their potential. There were also a few that just wouldn’t come around with me or anyone else.

INSPIRATION

The point here is that I had to know when to “fold’em.” I had used my ability to try to reach those difficult horses with no results. Why? Did I beat myself up thinking I was a failure? No! There are many ways to train a horse and all trainers are a little different. Not all horses are the same and not all methods work on all horses. It may just take the right trainer at the right time with the right method to bring out the very best in that horse. That being said, I think it takes a special kind of trainer to realize when they need a little help or they need to send a horse on to a colleague with a little different method. Just like we, as Christians, need to realize that although we should never be ashamed to proclaim our faith and witness to the lost, we should also realize if our approach just isn’t working. We may do more harm than good. Maybe we just aren’t the right “trainer” for the job. It might be time to enlist the help

Page 42

of another “trainer” with a different method while we step back and do our part by praying for that person as our contribution to them finding their salvation and their way in Christ. More from last month: “As a horse trainer, I’ve learned not to give up on those tough ones - they usually make the best horses. It is the pressure and release and lots of patience that give them a chance to come around. And when they do, it is amazing.” With our non-Christian friends it is often the same way. It is those who fought against it the hardest that eventually make the best warriors for Christ. Just two examples that should ring a bell: The Apostle Paul and C.S. Lewis.” How do we know when it is time to ask for another mentor to step in and us to step aside? Pray. Ask God for peace about the situation. It’s tough to “fold’em,” but like with the young horses, it’s better to ask for help than to ruin a horse or get yourself hurt. Speaking of getting hurt, there’s the other line of that song that says to walk away..or even run. Is that even an option? Should we ever walk away?

I tried to find scripture about this and was reminded of “shaking the dust from your feet.” Matthew 10:14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. There may come a time when we have to walk away from those who rebuke us and our sharing of the gospel. But, before we walk away, we should do everything we can to reach out to those God puts on our hearts, keeping in mind that we are the servants and He is the Master and there is a “training”plan in place (for them and us.) We should not walk away angry, but should continue with prayer for those who refuse to hear God’s truth. Just like the young horse has a choice to give in to the pressure of the bit, we all have a choice to answer the knocking on the door to our heart.... or to ignore it. I chose to answer the door and continue to pray that others will as well. Happy Trails & God Bless! Love in Christ, Christa

One Last (& most important) thought… Salvation is a gift and a choice......

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

INSPIRATION

Read past issues of our Christian Cowboy Collection and the Christian Barrel Racer’s Newsletter at the website below!

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

Sent to trainer Wayne Mogge at the beginning of the meet specifically to run in the Don K. Memorial Starter Series, Candy Waltz now has two wins and one second in four starts for owner William Brauns. He pushed his career earnings to just over the $200,000 mark with the win in a time of 1:37.0. “I have known the owner for a long time and he’s a friend of mine,” said Mogge in a previous press release following his first win in the first leg of the Don K. Starter Series. “I trained for him in the past. They specifically sent him (Candy Waltz) to Indiana for the Don K. series and that runs almost the entire meet.”

Sweet Victory For Candy Waltz In Friday Opener By Tammy Knox @ Indiana Grand

THOROUGHBRED RACING

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 7, 2015 – It looked more like a stakes field than an allowance optional claiming event with several talented horses in the first race Friday, Aug. 7 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. In the end, it was Candy Waltz who scored the sweet victory for Jockey Israel Ocampo in the one mile event over the dirt. Starting from post five in the six-horse field, Candy Waltz was a threat from the start, sitting right outside pacesetter Mister Pollard and jockey Abdiel Jaen. Heading down the backstretch, Candy Waltz continued to press the pace of the race through early fractions of :23.67 and :46.69 and 1:11.06 through the first threequarters of the mile before taking over the top spot.

The field of six included four former stakes winners. All but one entrant has accumulated more than $150,000 in career earnings. Mister Pollard is a two-time stakes winner at Indiana Grand, winning the $85,000 Hoosier Breeders Sophomore Stakes last year and coming right back for a win in the $150,000 To Much Coffee Stakes on closing night at Indiana Grand in 2014. Candy Waltz was the favorite, paying $4.40, $3.00, $2.40 across the board. Ocampo has been aboard the six-year-old son of Candy Ride for all four starts at Indiana Grand this year. His win in the first race aboard Candy Waltz was the beginning of a good day. Ocampo went on to win the eighth race on the card with Boss Barney’s Babe, a $38,000 allowance optional claiming event, to score a riding double for the day. Ocampo, who is in his first year of competition at Indiana Grand, has been among the track’s top five all season. He is currently in contention for third place with 38 wins and his mounts have accumulated just under $1 million through the first half of the race meet.

In the stretch, Thank You Kisses and Rodney Prescott rallied from off the pace to pose a threat to Candy Waltz, and the two exchanged time at the top spot down the stretch several times, but in the end, Candy Waltz was too much for Thank You Kisses, win-

William Henry Harrison Stakes, as the favorite in the race. As expected, Son of a Nut rallied out on top early for jockey Albin Jimenez. Devil’s Due West, another grey ridden by Fernando De La Cruz, joined the front runner along the inside while Memphisinmay and Joe Rocco Jr. showed early speed from the outside. Around the turn, Son of a Nut was able to get the top spot to lead the field through the first quarter in :24.05 seconds, tracked closely by Devil’s Due West and Memphisinmay. Down the backstretch, De La Cruz let Devil’s Due West out a notch and was on the lead past the halfway mark in :48.48 before Son of a Nut regained control and led the field into the turn. Memphisinmay was not backing down on the outside and was joined by Prince Grand and Robby Albarado on the far outside for the move around the turn. At the top of the stretch, it was a three horse battle across the track as Son of a Nut held the inside position and Memphisinmay remained to the inside of Prince Grand. Halfway down the lane, Son of a Nut and Memphisinmay shook loose from Prince Grand and began a duel to the finish. Memphisinmay was able to move forward just enough to get the final nod on the outside as they passed under the wire in a time of 1:42.64. Son of a Nut was more than three and one-half lengths ahead of the rest of the field with Daddy Justice and Rafael Hernandez moving up for third.

By Tammy Knox @ Indiana Grand SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 12, 2015 – It was a battle of the grey horses right down to the wire and Memphisinmay was the winner of the battle, winning by the bob of a head over Son of a Nut in the $150,000-guaranteed Governor’s Stake. The race was one of three stakes on the card for the Wednesday, Aug. 12 racing program at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. A field of 10 assembled for the 12th running of the Governor’s Stake running one mile, 70 yards with Son of a Nut, undefeated in four previous starts, including the $85,000 Sagamore Sired Stakes and the $85,000

info@itoba.com

“If he (Memphisinmay) gets inside of horses, he gets a little intimidated,” said Gorder. “We told Joe (Rocco Jr.) to keep him engaged and to keep him outside of another horse. I thought he’d be in the second or third flight of horses today, but he showed more speed. He sort of ran like he did at Oaklawn this year.”

Memphisinmay Earns First Stakes Win In $150,000 Governor’s Stake

Memphisinmay was a shock to the bettors, paying $25.40, $8.80, $6.60 across the board. The win marked the first stakes win of his career for the grey son of Rockport Harbor and his third win in eight starts for 2015. Memphisinmay more than doubled his career earnings for owner Brent Gasaway, pushing his bankroll to more than $150,000 with the win. The Indiana bred colt was born and raised by Justice Farm and Greg Justice, who are also the breeders on third place finisher Daddy Justice, who was the first winner from their sire Lantana Mob last year at two. Kellyn Gorder has trained Memphisinmay since being purchased as a two-yearold from the Ocala Breeders Sale in the spring of 2014.

After posting four starts at two, Memphisinmay is now three for 12 in his career. Two of his three wins have been recorded at Indiana Grand and the distance seems to be suitable, with all three wins near the distance in the Governor’s Stakes. Memphisinmay will have more stakes opportunities at Indiana Grand as the season moves into the final months of the 120-day race meet.

stretch. The closers in the race began to kick into gear, including Lady Fog Horn and Leading Rider Albin Jimenez, who had the best chance of chasing down Comforter in the stretch. Race favorite Heart’s Song and Brian Hernandez Jr. were also on the move on the far outside with hopes of using the stretch to close in on the leaders. Halfway through the lane, Lady Fog Horn took over the top spot and rallied home convincingly for the win by one and one-quarter lengths over a hard charging Heart’s Song for second on the outside. Comforter maintained ground along the inside and was the best of the rest to finish third. Lady Fog Horn earned her third win in five outings for 2015 with her victory in the Indiana First Lady Stakes. The homebred owned and bred by Stuart Grant’s The Elkstone Group LLC. Lady Fog Horn nearly doubled her career bankroll to more than $184,000 with her first career stakes win. She has now won three of her last four starts, finishing third to both Heart’s Song and Comforter in her last race, the $85,000 Ellen’s Lucky Star Stakes at Indiana Grand.

THOROUGHBRED RACING

“There were three or four in here that had speed, so we told Albin (Jimenez) to sit chilly and wait,” said Granitz. “There was a good pace in this race, which worked for us. The last time out she got stuck on the inside, so we wanted to make sure she had time in this race to get out and run.” Lady Fog Horn paid $11.80, $4.60, $3.20 across the board. With several stakes races left on the schedule for 2015, she has many options as far as her next outing.

Lady Fog Horn Captures Title In $150,000 Indiana First Lady Stakes By Tammy Knox @ Indiana Grand

“Her next stop will probably be the $200,000 stake for three-year-old fillies (Indiana Grand – Listed Stake) on September 9,” said Granitz. “Mr. Grant wants to run her on the turf, and there is an Indiana Stake that same day, so you never know because she runs well on the dirt too. She’s really an open door because she can run either way, but the main goal is to try the open stakes next time out.”

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 12, 2015 – Lady Fog Horn alerted the field she was on a mission and blasted past her opponents in the stretch to win the 12th running of the $150,000-Guaranteed Indiana First Lady Stakes Wednesday, Aug. 12 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The Zavata filly posted a time of 1:42.12 for the one mile, 70 yard race.

Grant, a lawyer who resides in Wilmington, Del., has been a longtime owner in the Thoroughbred industry. He has had several good horses in the past five years, including Grace Hall, who won the Indiana Oaks in 2012 and went on to finish fourth in the Grade I $2 million Breeders’ Cup Lady’s Classic at Santa Anita that same year. Grant also owns Camden Training Center in South Carolina and is an active breeder in the business.

Comforter and Indiana’s all-time leading jockey by wins Rodney Prescott rallied out of the gate and got the top spot early on. The duo set brisk fractions of :23.40 and :47.37 seconds the first half of the race and continued to hold on to the top spot by open lengths until the top of the

“Mr. Grant wanted to foal some mares that had incentives of the casino money and brought some to Indiana,” said Granitz, who is a longtime successful trainer on the Chicago racing circuit. “I just got off the phone with him to tell him about the race and he is very pleased.”

No Peeking!

Ian Boettcher knew that our Mystery cover featured Bobby Ruwe riding “Short Horse.” This was Bobby’s first time to grace our cover in May of 2009. He also made the cover in July of 2010! Bobby whas been instrumental in the growth of the popular sport of Cowboy Mounted Shooting. For being the first to give us the correct answer, Ian wins his choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”

Congrats to our winner!
