Downs KEEPING UP WITH
Message from Terri Mauldin ... The Down Syndrome Association of San Antonio is in the process of some staff changes! I want to welcome Angie Cronin to the Down Syndrome Association as the new Volunteer/Office Coordinator. Angie was previously the Administrative Assistant/Assistant Volunteer Coordinator for the Alpha Home. She has lots of experience training and recruiting volunteers, so we are very excited to have her join the DSASA! It is with sadness that Nana Knowles has resigned as the Special Events Coordinator. Nana was with the DSASA for over two years and made quite a connection with all our families. Please join me in wishing Nana much success as she moves on to a new opportunity. I would like to welcome our new Special Events Coordinator, Stephanie Anderson. She was involved with the DSASA as chairman of the Hoot ’n Holler event for the New Braunfels Branch. We are certainly blessed to have such a dynamic person join our organization. Congratulations to Richard Glancey! Richard signed up for our monthly H.U.G.S. donation program, and his name was drawn as the winner of the Spurs vs. Warrior tickets! Thank
you, Richard, and all the others that are giving so graciously through this wonderful program. If you would like to sign up to give, see the homepage on our website, www.dsasa.org. Terri Mauldin This is a very busy time for the DSASA with many events coming up over the next few months. Inside this newsletter, you will find information about the Annual Spring Picnic, Audrey’s Day at the Beach, and of course, the Buddy Walk! These are all in addition to the monthly activities we plan for our families. On Saturday, March 12, the Adult Matters! participants attended the 2nd Annual Spring Formal. This event was held at Aldaco’s at Sunset Station, and everyone was beautifully dressed in their formal attire. I want to thank Aldaco’s for the party room, Richard Hughes for the DJ services, Chris Reilly for the wonderful photos, and the ladies (and gentleman) from the San Antonio Junior Forum for volunteering. This was an extremely successful event - we can’t wait for next year!

THE NATIONAL DOWN SYNDROME CONGRESS ANNUAL CONVENTION IS COMING TO SAN ANTONIO. What a great opportunity for parents, educators, therapists, and others interested in learning more about Down syndrome! Friday, August 5 - Sunday, August 7 JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! Visit www.ndsccenter.org to register as a Volunteer or as an attendee for the General Convention, Youth & Adults Conference, and Brothers & Sisters Conference. The General Convention offers parents and professionals an opportunity to learn from the best speakers from around the world and share experiences with one another. To enhance the convention experience, the Pre-Conference Sessions on Friday offer an opportunity to go in-depth on a single topic. Teens and adults with Down syndrome (age 15 and over) will be empowered at the Youth & Adults Conference. Siblings of individuals with Down syndrome (middle school through college) will have a chance to learn and be heard at the Brothers & Sisters Conference. This year, we'll be offering Kids’ Camp, a supervised place for younger kids to gather while the rest of the family attends conference workshops. It truly is like a giant family reunion! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Volunteer support is vital to making this a memorable event for attendees. The DSA is supporting the convention by providing over 300 volunteers age 18 or over. Our most important volunteer need is support for the Youth & Adults Conference. In order to provide the best experience possible for these self-advocates (youth & adults ages 15 and older with Down syndrome), we need extensive support over the three days (approximately 85 people each day!). The volunteers guide and interact with the self-advocates throughout the events of the day. Though it is not a requirement to commit to all three days, the consistency and familiarity created by having the same volunteers provide support throughout the conference is ideal. No previous experience is necessary just flexibility, the desire to interact directly with selfadvocates and the willingness to have fun. Other volunteer opportunities through the general convention include registration, audiovisual support, session hosts, bilingual Spanish speakers, and floaters. If you are interested in volunteering or if

Adult Matters! by Julie Cheatwood - Adult Matters! Director
Adult Matters! is a social program specifically designed for our adults with DS ages 18 and older. The focus is on providing an environment to help them further develop their social skills, build friendships among other adults with DS, and offer them safe and appropriate interactions within the community. In order to foster that environment, we encourage them to invite an age-appropriate peer (another adult with special needs) to participate with them. DSA will pay the participation fee for both of them as well as a 1:4 chaperone ratio. We realize that our adults depend on family and friends for transportation to and from these activities, so we will always try to plan activities that offer a place where parents/guardians can gather nearby (restaurant, coffee shop, etc.) and visit with each other during the event. Please RSVP for each event to Stephanie Anderson at sanderson@dsasa.org or 210-349-4372. SUNDAY, MAY 15 - ANNUAL DSA PICNIC Please see page 4 for details. SATURDAY, JUNE 11 - AUDREY’S DAY AT THE BEACH Please see page 4 for details. SATURDAY, JULY 16 - PUTT PUTT Ice and Golf Center at Northwoods, 17530 Henderson Pass. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The DSASA will pay for the adult and an age appropriate peer (18 years and older with disabilities) to play a round of putt putt. Bring money for snacks and drinks. Please RSVP no later than July 13th. SATURDAY, AUGUST 27 - DSASA FAMILY DAY AT SPLASHTOWN Please see page 4 for details.

Meet Your Board MICHELLE PETTIT, Governance and Development Committees by Gary Stinnett Michelle Pettit is a 20-year employee of H-E-B and currently the Director of Human Resources for Corporate. She joined the DSASA Board of Directors in July of 2010 and serves on the Governance and Development Committees. Although Michelle just recently joined the Board, she has made a significant impact within both committees. Michelle is married to Scott Pettit, and they have four children, Morgan age 21, Christopher 19, Kendall 12, and Hayden 7. They also have one granddaughter, Hanna Beth 3. Scott also happens to work for H-E-B and, yes, they met at work! Michelle’s connection with Down syndrome is through her favorite cousin, Douglas Spitler. The two grew up together in small town Kansas, and although Douglas was 6 years older than Michelle, she adored him. He was always willing to play games with her! This life-long affinity for those with Down syndrome is the reason she felt compelled to join the DSASA. Michelle would like to see the DSASA reach more kids and adults in the San Antonio area and bring about more awareness to the programs offered that would best meet their needs. Thank you, Michelle, for your contributions to the DSASA!

Keeping Up With Downs
Meet Anthony
Mom: Her last name is LaGrange, because she got married, but she lives in Temple. Mom: Anthony, what is your favorite musical instrument?
By Elizabeth Carnes
Anthony: Drums.
When I was asked to write an article on my son Anthony I thought, “I don’t want it to be a typical mom story; I want people reading to get to hear what Anthony has to say.” So I interviewed him. If you find yourself a little lost at times, remember, he’s sixteen; much of what’s going on in his life is confusing to me, as well! I hope you enjoy “life according to Anthony”; I’ll fill in a few missing pieces along the way (italics).
Mom: Drums, and do you have a drum set?
Mom: This is an interview with Anthony Carnes. (I figured I should start off with something he’d be interested and excited about) Anthony, what is your favorite band?
Anthony: In Pennsylvania to see my aunt, she puts eyeliner on me, and she takes care of me, she makes me chocolate-chip cookies and hot chocolate and she makes the best pancakes. (The lead singer of the Newsboys wears eyeliner)
Anthony: My favorite band is The Newsboys, and I like them because they are a perfect band. (The Newsboys are a Christian band from Australia that Anthony is very fond of)
Anthony: No. Mom: Would you like a drum set? Anthony: Yes. Mom: Anthony what do you do for fun; do you play any sports? Anthony: I play basketball and soccer. At soccer we have a great team. Mom: Cool, basketball & soccer. And who are your friends that you play those sports with? Anthony: Amanda, Billy, Gabriel and all those kids. Mom: Where’s your favorite place to go on vacation?
Mom: Wow, she lets you do all the things mom doesn’t. That does sound like a good aunt. And Anthony where do you live?
Mom: What do you like about The Newsboys?
Anthony: Australia.
Anthony: They know about Christ, and they love God so much, and they sing praises to the Lord.
Mom: Australia!? Wow, that’s a long way from San Antonio, Texas isn’t it?
Mom: Okay, Anthony how old are you?
Anthony: Yeah.
Anthony: Sixteen year old.
Mom: What’s your favorite animal?
Mom: And Anthony, what school do you go to?
Anthony: Jaws.
Anthony: High School Madison.
Mom What’s Jaws, what kind of animal?
Mom: And what is your favorite thing about Madison High School?
Anthony: A great white shark.
Anthony: Cafeteria.
Anthony: Because they’re the most dangerous animals on earth.
Mom: The cafeteria, and what do you like most about the cafeteria?
Mom: Have you ever seen a great white shark in person?
Mom: And why do you like great white sharks so much?
Anthony: Chicken fried steak.
Anthony: Well in the ocean, I saw one before in the movie, and in every beaches.
Mom: Anthony, do you have any brothers and sisters?
Mom: Wow, have you ever been to the beach?
Anthony: Well, one’s named Jonathan and the other one’s named Kristina.
Anthony: Well, you took me once in New Jersey, and I saw the ocean.
Mom: And do they both live with you?
Mom: That’s right I did ... let’s see, what do you love the most about your church?
Anthony: Yes. Mom: Does your sister live with you? Anthony: So much! (I later figured out he thought I said love, not live) Mom: Does your sister live in the same house as you? Anthony: No Mom: No, where does she live? Anthony: She lives in LaGrange.
Anthony: At my church, I just worship the Lord, and I see my friends like Kalvin and Josiah, Isaiah, my favorite best friends I love them, and Bruce Blakey my first best friend because I like me and him to talk together about Christ and the gospel and how to spread the gospel for the people. Mom: Well, Anthony, I just want to say thanks for answering all of Mom’s questions. I hope that people will read this and realize you are a smart and very interesting kid. Anthony: Yeah, me too. Can I go play now?
