Message from Terri Mauldin ... 2013 is off to a great start for the Down Syndrome Association of South Texas! We have attended several resource fairs to get our information into the hands of families needing support and information. We have also held several events for the families, including a formal dance for the adults and a day at the San Antonio Zoo for the Teens, Playgroup and Kid Connection participants. On April 1st, the D.A.D.S. (Dads Appreciating Down Syndrome) group held their 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at the Club at Sonterra. We had a beautiful day with many golfers enjoying the great course and weather. See Page 8 for a listing of all the supporters and the winners! The DSASTX is planning a very busy summer and fall! We have the Annual Spring Picnic at Landa Park on Sunday, May 19th and the Buddy Walk on Saturday, September 28th at Heroes Stadium. If you have a company or organization that is interested in sponsorship opportunities for the Buddy Walk, please contact me.

Help Us Give Support

As mentioned previously, on Saturday, March 2nd the Adult Matters participants attended the 4th Annual Spring Formal. This event was held at Aldaco’s at Sunset Station. Everyone was Terri Mauldin dressed up in their formal attire for a terrific evening of fun and dancing. I want to thank the RK Group for donating the party room, Richard Hughes for the DJ services, Lupita Martinez for the wonderful photos, and the ladies (and gentleman) from the San Antonio Junior Forum for helping us as volunteers. This was an extremely successful event, and we can’t wait for next year! I hope everyone has a good start to the summer and I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the next event!

Meet Natalia

Natalia is 13 years old. She started playing the piano about 2 years ago. Everything started with her sister Andrea, 7 years younger. Natalia was accompanying her to the piano classes, and after one month Natalia insisted that she wanted to play the piano, too. The piano teacher, Susan Hong, did not have any experience with kids with disabilities, so when we approached her she said she could not take her. Natalia kept insisting, so Mrs. Hong agreed to give her an opportunity. Natalia got so excited that she agreed to obey Mrs. Natalia Diaz Hong and practice at home. Since Mrs. Hong did not know the typical modified technique for special kids, Natalia learned the same way as her sister, and her mother had to learn how to read the lessons so Natalia could practice at home. About six months after she started playing the piano, Natalia participated in the Christmas show. The first time, she did it with assistance, and she did so well that Mrs. Hong let her participate in the other shows with the typical kids. In December 2012, Natalia was invited to participate in a special kids show at one of the local churches. It was a phenomenal show with many special kids showing off their musical talents. We felt very proud that Natalia was part of such an amazing event! Next, Natalia was invited to participate in the Gold Cup at UTSA on January 26th. For this event she had to take a written test in which she required some help from the instructors because of her speech disability, but she did not require any help playing the piano by herself in front of three judges in a special room with the doors closed. She obtained a blue ribbon for her performance which represents a superior performance. Now she will go for a second round. Natalia has proven that despite her severe speech impairment, she is still able to perform well in different disciplines, first by winning the HEB reusable bag drawing contest two years in a row and now by playing a musical instrument. Congratulations to Natalia, as well as her mother, Mrs. Susan Hong, and her teachers.

Board Chairman

Saturday - June 8 - 8:30 am

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, concerned citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” — Margaret Mead I am thrilled to assume the position of Chairman of the Board for this incredible organization and believe that we are on the cusp of some great things! Our goal as board members is to lead the organization by listening and learning from you ... our stakeholders.

Edward R. Leos

We will begin having a strategic planning session next month that will review all of our goals, core values and ways to make that happen. Your board is committed to making the Down Syndrome Association of South Texas an intricate and viable organization for all of our families. As chairman, it is my desire to help lead the organization over the next several years into something that we can all continue to be proud of. Sincerely, Edward R. Leos – Chairman of the Board Down Syndrome Association of South Texas

D.A.D.S.

Dads Appreciating Down Syndrome, or D.A.D.S., is a committee or community group (within a local Down syndrome support organization) of fathers of children who happen to have Down syndrome. We hesitate to call ourself a “support group”, even though we do, in many ways, support each other. We invite expert speakers to discuss medical, educational, financial, social, and any other issues that affect our children’s lives. And of course, we share stories and experiences that are unique to fathers of children with Down syndrome. WEDNESDAY, MAY 22 San Antonio Missions vs. Arkansas Travelers at 7:05 pm. Please RSVP to Kerin at 210-349-4372 or kcroft@dsastx.org before Monday, May 20th. JULY MEETING TBD

Welcome to all our new friends! We are Bill and Jackie Shockley of Rockport, Texas. Several years ago we began our celebration on the beach in loving memory of our granddaughter, Audrey Shockley who was born with Down syndrome. With only a few friends and family we scheduled a day to celebrate the short life we were able to enjoy with her. We wanted a way to give back to the Down Syndrome Association for all the guidance and support they gave to our son Ray, Audrey's father. What could be better than a day at the beach! Now every year we gather together for a day of fun and food, providing a safe enjoyable outlet for all the wonderful families and friends we have met. What a great way to extend support to the families, friends and adults that have been touch by Down syndrome. The celebration continues to grow and evolve into the tremendous support group that we have today. We are very fortunate to have so many people get involved and enjoy this annual event ... We hope to see you there!! For more information or to contribute time, supplies, ideas or funds to continue Audrey's Day at the Beach please contact: Jackie Shockley • 361-729-2529 PO Box 1509 • Rockport, TX 78381

At the D.A.D.S. Golf Tournament, two of our self-advocates, Stephanie Crane and Jessaca Bond, were riding around with volunteers greeting the golfers and cheering them on. One of the teams asked the girls if they wanted to hit the ball for them. Stephanie drove the ball so far that the team used her shot and ended up with a birdie at the hole. Afterwards, one of the team members asked Stephanie to autograph the ball. At the dinner/awards ceremony that evening, the story was told and the auction for the ball began. It started at $20, then $40, then $60 – the excitement in the room was building and Stephanie was on her feet cheering them on. Then we hear, “$500!” Thanks to Phil Zaccaria for purchasing the autographed ball signed by Stephanie Crane to help benefit the D.A.D.S. program!
