Message from Terri Mauldin ... Welcome to 2011! I am really looking forward to all the wonderful things the Down Syndrome Association of San Antonio has in store for the New Year! As we close 2010, I would like to reflect on what a great year it was for not only the DSASA, but for the Down syndrome community, as well. The DSASA added so many new families over the past year, so that now we are serving over 700 families with almost 5,000 contacts in our database. More and more people in our community are finding out about the DSA, and we love that we can let everyone know the great things the DSA does and how wonderful our kids are. Another wonderful step for our kids was the passing of Rosa’s Law. This law will change all references in federal law from “mental retardation” to “intellectual disability” and it will also change the reference of a “mentally retarded individual” to “an individual with an intellectual disability”. Effective February 4, Alice Gomez, the DSA Office Manager will no longer be with the DSA. We want to take this opportunity to thank Alice for all she has done for us the past 7 years and we wish her all the best!

All the events we held in 2010, from the monthly social activities to the Buddy Walk to the Holiday Party, were so well attended that we Terri Mauldin know the DSA is making an impact. Over 4,000 people attended the Buddy Walk, raising over $130,000, and over 750 enjoyed the festivities of the Holiday Party. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following people for their hard work at the Holiday Party: • Richard Hughes for providing all the wonderful dancing music • Chris Reilly Photography for taking such awesome photos • Bubie Stelzig for being a wonderful Santa Claus • All the volunteers that helped with set up, registration, kitchen duty, and clean up. I also want to thank the members of our Board of Directors for their dedication this past year in helping the DSASA become an incredible organization! I look forward to enjoying 2011 with each and every one of you!

Medicaid Buy-In

Applications are being accepted for the new Medicaid Buy-In for Children program. Created by the Texas Legislature in 2009, the program allows families whose incomes do not meet Medicaid eligibility requirements to purchase Medicaid coverage. Families with a child (age 18 or younger) who meets SSI disability criteria and whose adjusted gross income is up to 300% of the federal poverty level (approximately $66,700 for a family of four) may pay premiums to access Medicaid. Normally these families would not be eligible for Medicaid because their income is too high. Benefits include doctor and hospital visits (including emergency care), prescriptions, dental care, mental health care, speech therapy, physical therapy, regular checkups and family planning. For more information or to apply, dial 2-1-1 or visit www.yourtexasbenefits.com.

Adult Matters!

by Julie Cheatwood - Adult Matters! Director

Adult Matters! is a social program specifically designed for our adults with DS ages 18 and older. The focus is on providing an environment to help them further develop their social skills, build friendships among other adults with DS, and offer them safe and appropriate interactions within the community. In order to foster that environment, we encourage them to invite an age-appropriate peer (another adult with special needs) to participate with them. DSA will pay the participation fee for both of them as well as a 1:4 chaperone ratio. We realize that our adults depend on family and friends for transportation to and from these activities, so we will always try to plan activities that offer a place where parents/guardians can gather nearby (restaurant, coffee shop, etc.) and visit with each other during the event. Please RSVP for each event to Nana Knowles at nknowles@dsasa.org or 210-349-4372.

Meet Adam By Karen Leitko

Adam recently celebrated his 29th birthday with friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. He began his education almost immediately after birth at the Brighton School. Then it was on through the public school system. While in high school, Adam Adam created a work of art which was later displayed at then Governor George W. Bush’s office in the state Capitol. He was also a representative at the Disability Leadership Conference. He has been competitively employed for nine years and lives in a group home with 3 other housemates. Adam loves to fish with his friends Travis and Tony, as well as with his parents. He even has the nickname “Catfish” which is boldly emblazoned on the front of a cap which was a gift from Tony. He

loves Brad Paisley’s “Fishing Song”, too! In addition to getting together with friends, Adam also enjoys watching sports and going to the movies, is an avid golfer, loves the Spurs, and enjoys listening to all types of music. Traveling is another one of Adam’s loves. In May he visited Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, among other places. On the trip back home, he was privileged to be on an “Honor Flight” and got to visit with many men and women who served in World War II. Adam hopes that his next trip will be to the Bahamas! More than anything, Adam adores spending time with his extended family. He is looking forward to the arrival of baby boys in the spring - his cousin and wife are expecting twin boys!

Meet Your Board GARY STINNETT, Board of Directors & Finance Committee by Lisa Drozdick Gary Stinnett joined the DSASA Board of Directors in December of 2009 following a request by Christy Anderson, the current Vice Courtney, Gary, Laura Chairperson of the Board. He also & Nicholas Stinnett serves on the finance committee. Gary wanted to become involved and make a difference in a growing, charitable organization. Although he does not have a child with Down syndrome, he is close friends with Kevin and Christy Anderson, whose son Drew has Down syndrome. Prior to Drew’s birth, Gary admits that he knew very little about Down syndrome. He has learned a lot over the years and is eager to see the DSASA grow and become a one-stop, local resource for those families expecting or who have kids or family members with Down syndrome. He would like to see the DSASA continue and increase educational, support, and entertainment programs for children, adults, and families touched by Down syndrome. Gary is Vice President of the Wash Tub car washes based in San Antonio. He has worked for the company for 21 years, starting out washing cars while attending UTSA. When he started, there were only 3 locations; now the Wash Tub operates 20 full service car washes and employs over 1,200 people. The large retail presence of Wash Tub throughout San Antonio offers some unique awareness opportunities for the DSASA. Gary is married to Laura Stinnett, and they have a 14-year-old daughter Courtney and an 11-year-old son Nicholas. His kids are quite active and are “at that age where they always have something going on - sports, social etc. Thankfully they are not old enough to drive yet, so most of our free time is spent watching volleyball and basketball games and practices.” Although Gary has been a San Antonio resident since 1986, he moved around quite a bit when he was younger, including Lubbock, Amarillo and Arlington, prior to San Antonio. Thank you, Gary, for sharing your time and insight with the Down Syndrome Association of San Antonio!
