A Los Angeles Jewel
Millennium Biltmore he 683-room Millennium Biltmore Hotel Los Angeles was designed in the style of the SpanishItalian Renaissance and opened in 1923 to national acclaim as the largest hotel west of Chicago; it was designated a Historical Cultural Landmark by the City of Los Angeles in 1969. The legendary 11-story structure was designed by famed New York architectural firm Schultze & Weaver, known for The Waldorf=Astoria and Park Lane hotels, with cathedral ceilings hand-painted by Italian artist Giovanni Smeraldi of White House and Vatican fame. Founding Oscar® Banquet The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held their founding banquet in the Crystal Ballroom in 1927, where the design for the “Oscar” statuette was sketched on a Biltmore napkin, and eight Academy Awards banquets were held in the Biltmore Bowl during the 1930s and ‘40s. The hotel was also the host for the 1960 Democratic National Convention, where future President John F. Kennedy campaigned, and for the 1984 Summer Olympic games, accommodating countless dignitaries and celebrities. Perfect Meetings and More The ideal setting for unforgettable social and business functions, more than 70,000 square feet of combined meeting and banquet rooms are resplendent with handoiled wood paneling, ornate carvings, vivid frescoes and sparkling crystal chandeliers. Given the extraordinary ambiance and grandeur, combined with modern luxury, approximately 80-90 storybook weddings are held annually at the grand hotel. The hotel’s iconic architecture attracts location scouts and results in countless films and television shows having been and continuing to be shot at the Millennium Biltmore, including Dark Knight Rises, Mad Men, Bugsy, Chinatown, Ghostbusters, Ocean’s 11, Independence

Florida Destinations Great All Year ‘round
year-round summery vibe and warm, secluded feel work wonders on Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, and their coastal companions, Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch, making it the ultimate Florida beach retreat. Delighted visitors are treated to an overabundance of natural beauty and a mild annual average temperature of 75 degrees. (Extreme summer and winter temperatures are mellowed by the Gulf of Mexico.) A diverse and fragrant floral parade of passion flowers, brilliant hibiscus, striking bougainvillea, cheery alamanda, and fragrant jasmine color the inland landscape. And a 27-mile stretch of powder soft sandy beaches, dotted with wispy sea oats and scrubby Australian pines, lines a shimmering expanse of aquamarine gulf waters, creating an ideal setting for visitors to decompress and sink into leisure. Charming Appeal Nature lovers, serenity seekers and beachgoers find it easy to explore this coastal gem. The area boasts three equally unique locales that charm visitors with their individual appeal: the Mainland, Anna Maria Island, and Longboat Key. On the Mainland, visitors can explore the city of Bradenton situated along the coast, or the Cortez Historic Fishing Village and the quirky and colorful Village of the Arts, a mix of art galleries and shops. On the dreamy barrier island known as Anna Maria, visitors wander pastel-washed seaside cottages found neatly tucked
A
away in little byways. A convenient trolley system allows easy travel from the northern-most point of the island all the way down to Coquina Beach at the southern tip. Drifting over the Longboat Pass Bridge leads to the 11-mile-long Longboat Key, a pristine and soothing beach destination just south of Anna Maria Island. Beach aficionados can practice the lost art of doing absolutely nothing guilt-free, but there is plenty of activity to be found for those who want to do more than just snooze in a hammock. The area’s famed liquid asset – sparkling gulf water – offers up the chance to swim, water ski, sail, kayak, snorkel, scuba dive, and fish in the Florida sun. Florida’s Gulf Islands offer an ample supply of boat docks, marinas, fishing piers, boat rentals, and excursion boat tours. On dry land, golfers are smitten with the dozens of exceptional courses, and tennis buffs can raise a racquet at IMG’s world-renowned Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy. Close Destinations Wrapped in this coastal paradise, it is easy to forget its accessibility to nearby Sarasota and St. Petersburg. Enjoy a quick jaunt to Sarasota to experience The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art or the stylish St. Armand’s Circle shops and restaurants. A short drive across the Sunshine Skyway Bridge brings visitors to St. Petersburg, where they can marvel at the famous art of eccentric Salvador Dali at the Salvador Dali Museum, or stroll along BayWalk, a Mediterranean- themed downtown waterfront entertainment

complex. Avid shoppers don’t have to miss a beat during their beach stay, indulging in an excursion to nearby Ellenton, home of the Prime Outlets with over 135 brand name outlet stores. Finding delight in the details, visitors have come to expect gracious and personalized service in each little beach town. Most accommodations on Anna Maria Island feature the comfy extras guests adore: pillow-top mattresses, extra large plush towels, private patios, gas barbecue grills, and bicycles for navigating around the island. Anna Maria Island is graced with a lovely ensemble of boutique inns and cozy mini-resorts that make guests feel like long-awaited friends. On Longboat Key, visitors can choose from posh digs to family style accommodations, showcasing the gulf’s snowy-white dunes and turquoise waters, and making every guest feel right at home. Florida’s Gulf Islands fulfill more than just an appetite for fun, serving up a scrumptious collection of dining options. For those who crave seafood, you will not be disappointed. From beach shacks offering the best crab cake you’ll ever devour, to gourmet fare at award winning establishments, local restaurants are www.thehotelguide.com
FL bound to please even the most finicky diners. Here, dining alfresco makes everything taste better, so most eateries, from swanky to casual, offer breezy outdoor seating with stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico. For those staying in accommodations with kitchen facilities, it’s a snap to create personal culinary creations with fresh fish and stone crab purchased at local markets or right off the boat at area marinas. As they cross small bridges to the barrier islands, visitors encounter unabashed natural beauty. Rich with native wildlife such as manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, and tropical birds, this destination is reminiscent of a yet to be discovered Florida beach hamlet. Nature tours and scenic state parks allow visitors to revel in Florida’s natural splendor. Clearly marked hiking trails make easy going for those who want to unwind and appreciate the unspoiled beauty. Back on the beach, vacationers can stroll along shoreline strewn with seashells and the occasional perfect sand dollar. Together, the unhurried pace and natural wonders of Florida’s Gulf Islands sweetly solicit the affection and devotion of anyone who’s ever napped on a beach blanket. The new program, developed by Wine Spectator’s premier wine experts and the brand’s global food and beverage team, offers guests a specially curated menu of premium wines and weekly tasting events. Sheraton Hotels piloted the new program in 19 global properties with tremendous success. Ninety-five percent of guests said they are “very likely” or “likely” to return to another Social Hour and would recommend the program to others and sixty-six percent would be more inclined to purchase wine while traveling if there was a premium wine program offered. Raise a Glass The Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel will offer guests a specially curated menu of premium wine including Sheraton Selects, an upgraded premium wine menu comprised of a rotation of eight or more wines by the glass, all rated by Wine Spectator. All Sheraton Selects wines will be rated above 85 and at least four offerings will be rated 90+. “For over thirty years, Wine Spectator has been committed to educating wine lovers and making fine wines accessible,” said Marvin Shanken, editor and publisher of Wine Spectator. “We are pleased to partner with Sheraton Social Hour, bringing together wine lovers www.thehotelguide.com

Monaci delle Terre Nere
ITALY
Mediterranean Bliss
ocated on a gravel road dating back to the times when monks settled at the foot of Mount Etna, the intimate nobiliary house ‘Monaci delle Terre Nere’ sits amidst an organic farm overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. A Perfect Getaway Creator and charming host Guido Coffa spent five years rescuing the villa from despair investing every drop of his energy to create an intimate, relaxing and stylish home. The six rooms come with rare thoughtfulness and exquisite taste. An old wine press and fresco paintings shimmering through the ceilings are traces of the buidling’s past and are in perfect harmony with wonderfully eccentric paintings by British-Brazilian artist Olivier Mourao, modern furnishings by Flos or B&B Italia and the owner’s personal collection of antiques. Personal Service Guido is also always at hand to arrange whatever your heart desires: an Italian feast at a small restaurant before the other guests arrive, a private tour of Mount Etna — even on a donkey if you dare — or wine tastings at remarkable wineries for some heavy reds and fruity whites from the region. Or from the farm itself: Guido produces an exceptional red wine that’s available for you to sample. At breakfast you’ll get a taste of what the farm has to offer: the black and nutritious earth is giving life to more than 70 different types of fruit, many of which are turned
L

into delicious home-made jams or freshly squeezed juices. Add warm bread rolls, prosciutto, salami, cheese with pistacios and strong coffee and you’ll be prepared to explore what the region has to offer. Awesome Surroundings Besides the craters of Mount Etna, there is famous Taormina with its Greek Theatre and Medieval Quarter, the fish market of Catania as well as the coast, of course, with fashionable Isola Bella in Taormina and 18km of sandy beaches stretching between Catania and Syracuse. But you may just want to take it easy and relax at the farm — just chosing the right spot is not easy: there is a day bed protected by massive oak trees, the back garden for views of Mount Etna or the natural terraces opening to the farm with its many olive and clementine trees to gaze over the Mediterranean Sea. And if you are lucky you’ll witness some lava fireworks at Mount Etna — which like everything else at ‘Monaci delle Terre Nere’ is a truly memorable experience. Live the “Island Lifestyle”
by: Lyndsey Fliehs Higgins
ecently, Shawn from Coastlines & Tanlines, a little latitudes native, asked us a question that we get asked often. How do you live an island lifestyle and keep salt in your veins but live so far from the ocean? And even more than that, how do you own a beach inspired clothing company that is based out of the midwest? After all, South Dakota (although it is the tropical Dakota) & Kansas couldn’t be more landlocked or further from the beach. Well we have a very easy answer. We live by 5 simple rules. These rules help keep us sane during the cold winter months, and smelling like coconut rum all year long.
R
1. Stocked bar. Have a well stocked bar that includes all the ingredients needed to make your favorite island drink. Painkillers, daiquiri’s, margarita’s, bushwhackers, pina colada’s, rum & coke…the list goes on. Just whatever you do, make sure you always have your bar stocked because you never know when that island drink itch is going to strike you! 2. Island Music. To help get in a tropical state of mind it’s important to have a good playlist ready to go at all times. Kenny Chesney, Jimmy Buffett, Zac Brown Band, Pirate Sessions, whatever gets you in the island mood. Crank up the tunes, pour yourself a cocktail and imagine feeling the sand between your toes. 3. Appropriate apparel. T-shirt (Team Cocktail of course), Flip Flops, Boardshorts, hats and whatever else gets you in the island mood. Wear these daily if you can even if it’s just for a couple hours when you’re at home relaxing. If you’re like us, you’ll wear these everyday, all day! So now you’ve got your cocktail, Island music and beach clothes on…it’s like your almost on the island! 4. Fun friends with an island state of mind. Whether you met them on Facebook through island inspired fan pages (such as Team Cocktail & Coastlines & Tanlines) 38 www.thehotelguide.com
Experiences
www.thehotelguide.com
or they are your next door neighbor, it’s important to have friends who share the island state of mind. Find those friends that love to share a good bottle of rum, great stories of the last island vacation you all were on, and who are ready to party it up with you at a moments notice. AND finally…the most important rule of all... 5. Have your next tropical vacation booked before you get back from the one you’re on! There is nothing worse than the last day of great beach vacation. BUT if you already have your next vacation on the books, you have something to look forward to! This is how the annual Team Cocktail Cruise got started and continues to grow every year! If you don’t have your next tropical vacation booked, get on it! There are so many great options such as the Conched in Key West Bar Crawl in September or the Team Cocktail Cruise in January! We follow these simple rules and live the island lifestyle every day. We may be in the midwest physically, but mentally we are always bellied up to our favorite beach bar, in our favorite TC t-shirt, with all of our Team Cocktail friends around us, listening to the local island musician and drinking the local brew or cocktail. As we say…Travel Global, Drink Local!! Visit them online at www.teamcocktail.com. 39
