Splashtown
Celebrating 25 Years
I
t was 25 years ago when Splashtown opened its water park on Interstate-35 filled with brightly-colored, twisting slides, a relaxing and cool lazy river called Siesta Del Rio, and Texas’ largest half-million gallon wave pool. This 2009 season, the water park will open for the weekends now and will operate daily beginning June 5. What a Celebration! To celebrate its 25th Anniversary, Spashtown is unveiling a totally revamped activity pool called “Crystal Falls” that features seven new waterslides and 250 feet of twisting excitement through a mountain of rocks and waterfalls. Affordable Entertainment... Splashtown is the most affordable water park in town when visitors bring any can or bottle of Big Red to the ticket booth and pay only $15.99 per guest – adult or child. “In some cases, the same amount of money you pay to park your car at some of the other theme parks, you pay for admission at Splashtown. In this economy, Splashtown is the better deal,” said Keith D. Kinney, president of Splashtown. “And the cool thing about our park is we are large enough to offer a ton of fun, yet small enough keep an eye on your kids.” Experience “Dive-In” Movies “Dive-In Movies” occurs at dusk every Friday night beginning in June. Visitors can enjoy watching a movie while relaxing in the wave pool. inding yourself in Fredericksburg is truly like finding yourself in a part of the Old World. Fredericksburg, with its German flair, historic buildings, attractions, outdoor activities, shopping and fine food, offers something for the entire family. Fredericksburg has always prized its deep German roots that stem from its founding in 1846 by a group of German settlers led by John O. Meusebach. State Attractions and More... Among Fredericksburg area attractions are three state parks, one municipal park, one wildlife management area and a national park. They are the Admiral Nimitz State Historical Park, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, LBJ State and National Parks, Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park and The Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area. The National Museum of the Pacific War is dedicated to everyone who served in the Pacific in World War II under Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. Admiral Nimitz, the last of the five star admirals, was a native son of Fredericksburg. His grandparents were among the first settlers in the community and were the builders and proprietors of the Steamboat Hotel (c. 1852), the original building on the site. The complex now consists of (1) the Admiral Nimitz Museum (the restored hotel), which houses on the first floor the history of Fredericksburg and the story of Admiral Nimitz’s life; (2) the George Bush Gallery with life size and lifelike exhibits from American and Japanese battles during the War in the Pacific; (3) the Garden of Peace, a gift from the people of Japan; (4) the Pacific Combat Zone, lined with rare aircraft, tanks and guns from that era; (5) the Memorial Wall, commemorating individuals and groups from the war; (6) the Plaza of the Presidents, which recognizes the World War II contributions of ten U.S. Presidents from Franklin Roosevelt to George Bush; and (7) the Admiral Nimitz Foundation Bookstore, filled with hundreds of books and gifts relating to WW II. Enchanted Rock Enchanted Rock is a 1,643-acre park that is home to the second largest granite dome in North America. The grounds feature 60 primitive campsites as well as shade and picnic areas. A moderately strenuous trail leads visitors to the top for a spectacular view, while other areas provide challenges for serious rock climbers. Enchanted Rock received its name

www.thehotelguide.com through Indian folklore that was passed through generations of native tribes. LBJ State & National Parks... The LBJ State and National Parks offer a historical look at the late President of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson. The orientation/visitor center for the national park is located in Johnson City, as well as the Boyhood Home and the Johnson Settlement. At the LBJ Ranchlands, located 16 miles east of Fredericksburg near Stonewall, a guided bus tour shows visitors the Texas White House, Old Junction School, LBJ’s Birthplace and the Johnson Family cemetery. An additional attraction at the LBJ State Park is the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farmstead that depicts pioneer farm life. Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, located approximately three miles from Main Street, features an 18-hole golf course, picnic pavilions, The Live Oak Wilderness Trail, a swimming pool, an RV park and a “fishing hole.” The Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area, or otherwise known as “The Bat Tunnel”, is open nightly from June through October. This abandoned railroad tunnel has become home to over one million Mexican free-tailed bats, which emerge each evening around dusk. Historical Attractions... Fredericksburg is also filled with historical attractions such as the Vereins Kirche (Society’s Church) and the Pioneer Museum Complex that are both owned by the Gillespie County Historical Society. The Pioneer Museum
Complex provides a glimpse of early life in Fredericksburg. Included on the site are the Kammlah House and Store, the Fassel Home, the WaltonSmith Log Cabin, the Weber Sunday House, the White Oak Schoolhouse and more. The city’s architecture has also been preserved in a beautiful historic district. One of the outstanding features in the historical district are the quaint Sunday Houses, which are very small homes built in town by the German pioneers. At the time, most of the families lived in the rural areas surrounding Fredericksburg where they farmed and ranched. On weekends, however, they came to town to get supplies, visit neighbors and attend church and stayed in their “in town” homes giving them the name, “Sunday House.” Special Events for Everyone In addition to attractions, Fredericksburg is always brimming with activity with more than 50 special events and festivals held annually. Events include: The Easter Fires Pageant, horse race meets, Fourth of July Parade, Night In Old Fredericksburg, Fredericksburg Food & Wine Fest, Oktoberfest, arts and crafts fairs, homes tours, Gillespie County Fair, Weihnachten in Fredericksburg and many more. In addition to the beautiful scenery, Gillespie County has excellent hunting for the outdoorsman. The county has an abundant population of white-tailed deer and turkey. Hiking in the state parks and biking on the backroads of the Texas Hill Country are also popular pursuits

Mesquite, Texas: Let’s Rodeo!
he “Daring Darlings of the Rodeo” take over the reins of the Mesquite Championship Rodeo’s chuck wagon race in 2009. The allgirl race adds its own brand of excitement and beauty to the rodeo action, headlined by Kaci Riggs. The girls race twice around the arena at full speed within inches of the wall and each other, sometimes with unpredictable results. There is plenty of competitions going on, including Team Roping which is professional rodeo’s only true team event and will provide added excitement for our rodeo fans. Chuckwagon Racing You don’t want to miss the Chuckwagon Races either. As the story goes, in days gone by, a cowboy’s home was his chuckwagon. After finishing a long day on the range, he’d return to his wagon for some grub, maybe to sing a song or share a story with some friends and finally get some well deserved rest. At the end of the week, all the cowboys in the area would get together and head to town for a little recreation and merriment. Legend has it that the cowboys would race to town in their chuckwagons, and the last to arrive was responsible for buying the first round at the saloon. A fast team and ability to pack up quickly was the name of the game. At the Mesquite Championship Rodeo, this same exciting race can be experienced every weekend. While the actual gear that the cowboy packed up is now replaced by a box or stove, they still use four thoroughbred horses to pull each of two wagons. Both wagons cut a figureeight pattern around a set of barrels, then complete two rounds around the arena, sliding and maneuvering their

way to the finish line. Bareback Riding... Bareback Riding is also another crowd pleaser. Bareback riding, developed in the rodeo arena many years ago, consistently produces some of the wildest action in the sport. A bareback rider begins his ride with his feet placed above the break of the horse’s shoulder. If the cowboy’s feet are not in the correct position when the horse hits the ground on its first jump out of the chute, the cowboy has failed to “mark out” the horse properly and is disqualified. This unique brand of excitement will continue from 8-10 pm every Friday and Saturday through August 29, 2009. Two hours of edge-ofyour-seat action! Houston’s Chic Boutique Property ouston never looked so good. After a $2.5 million renovation, the Hotel Derek has become the chic boutique hotel in the metroplex. he Floating Art Parade gets underway at The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival on April 4, in conjunction with the opening day of the festival. The parade features floating art pieces created and designed by local businesses and organizations. The floats parade down The Waterway from Town Green Park to The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and then parade back towards Town Green Park. The floats remain moored for public viewing throughout the festival. Participants are asked to design and create a float reflecting this year’s theme “Outer Space.” The best entry receives The Waterway Cup, a unique piece of art designed by one of the festival artists. It’s safe to say hamburgers are not on the menu at finedining establishments. In fact, most top chefs would probably get offended if you wanted a burger in his or her restaurant. Not Hubert Keller. Burgers are not only on the menu at one of his spots - they’re in the name! Keller is the chef known for his Fleur de Lys restaurants in San Francisco and Las Vegas. But he also tried something a little more casual in Vegas, opening Burger Bar at Mandalay Place (the shops between Mandalay Bay and Luxor). With that move, he’s credited with creating the upscale burger restaurant, which more and more chefs are now replicating around the country. So what’s on the menu at Burger Bar? Just about everything you could imagine. First of all, you’ll pick from the different types of meat. American Kobe beef, Buffalo, Ridgefield Farm beef, Black Angus beef and Turkey round out the options. There’s also a veggie burger, in case meat isn’t your thing. Then it gets interesting. Picking the toppings could take a while. There are more than 30 of them, including foie gras, black truffles, half lobster and homemade chili - just to name a few. Then, add in eight different types of cheeses and five different bun selections. So you’ve got a lot of choices to make. As for me, I went pretty standard. Ridgefield Farm beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomato and a pickle on a plain bun. I’m not the most ambitious when it comes to stuff like this, but I can honestly say it was the most delicious hamburger I’ve ever had in my life. Oh, and then there’s dessert - or sweet burgers, as they’re called at Burger Bar. Each one resembles a hamburger, with donuts playing the role of buns and your choice of sweetness (chocolate ganache, peanut butter mousse and cheese cake) playing the role of the meat. Delicious. The best part of it all? This place won’t break the bank. Depending on your toppings and beef selection, it could get a bit pricy - but most burgers are less than $10. Burger Bar is a true original. Boutique Hotel Making a Name for Itself

hen you’re planning a trip to Vegas, you normally end up staying at one of the mega-resorts. Those are what most people associate with the bright lights of the Strip. But you don’t see many boutique hotels in Sin City - and that‘s exactly what makes THEhotel at Mandalay Bay stand outfrom the field. THEhotel is the second tower at Mandalay Bay. Even though it’s part of the Mandalay Bay property, it’s considered a completely separate hotel. And believe me, THEhotel has more than enough great aspects to avoid being called any hotel’s “little brother.” First of all, THEhotel has some real character for a newer hotel. Everything in the place is branded with “the” name. So it’s “the cafe,”“the coffee bar,” “the lounge“...I think you get “the picture.” There’s even “the tp” in the bathroom. Yes, even the toilet paper is branded here. All of the rooms at THEhotel are suites and they’re some of the biggest in all of Las Vegas. Each one is 725 square feet, with two rooms and one and a half bathrooms. As soon as you walk into your suite, there’s the half-bath, a wet bar, a full-size couch, a seating area and an entertainment center, featuring a 42” plasma TV. Then you go into the separate bedroom, with another entertainment center. The bedroom has the full bath - with twin sinks, marble, granite, and a separate tub and shower. Oh yeah, there’s another TV in there, too. The lobby area at THEhotel is just stunning. It has dark woods and extremely-high ceilings and some really cool lighted columns. If the place looks familiar, you may have seen it on the big screen. THEhotel’s lobby was featured in a number of scenes in “Ocean’s Thirteen.” One of the other big selling points here is “the bathhouse,” THEhotel‘s spa. The walls are slate, the floors are marble and the water features are everywhere. You can get a massage, a wrap or a facial treatment. There’s also a hair salon and a full gym, called - what else - “the gym.”
If you’re hungry, THEhotel has one of the country’s more unique restaurants, Mix. It really is a place that appeals to all of your senses. From its 24-foot chandelier, to the amazing view from atop THEhotel, to the food from world-renowned chef Alain Ducasse - Mix is something that has to be experienced. That’s not to be confused with Mix Lounge - one of the hottest spots in Las Vegas. Its also at the top of THEhotel, with an absolutely breathtaking view. You really can’t beat enjoying a drink while standing over the Strip - only 64 floors up in the air. Even the bathrooms have an amazing view. Each stall has a little window so you can keep a watch on Las Vegas. Because it’s a boutique hotel, THEhotel doesn’t have its own casino or pool. The good thing is you get access to the facilities at Mandalay Bay, which is just a short walk down the foyer separating the two hotels. That’s especially good news with the pool, since Mandalay Bay’s Beach is hard to top. So if you’re looking for something different, THEhotel may be “the spot”or you. I’m trying to plan a trip to Las Vegas. What’s the best resort for a couple? A place that not only offers gambling, but also great restaurants and clubs, spa amenities and golf. - Rob The Hotel Guide Says... There’s only one hotel on the Strip that meets all those criteria - Wynn (along with Encore, the new tower at Wynn). You’ve got the restaurants SW Steakhouse and Daniel Boulud, just to name a few. There’s even an Italian food tribute to Frank Sinatra. You’ve got the big shows like Le Reve. You’ve got the nightclubs - XS is probably the hottest thing going right now and Wynn also has Tryst and Blush. The Wynn Spa has won several awards. And Wynn is the only hotel on the Strip to have its own golf course. If you don’t mind staying off the Strip, the JW Marriott also has its own golf course.

brother-in-law did it. He looked like he had a good time. At least I think that’s what the expression on his face meant. Finally, two of the best days I’ve had in Las Vegas involved Mother Nature. First, I always recommend a trip out to Red Rock Canyon. There’s hiking, climbing, great places to stop and take beautiful pictures there’s even a trail called Dale’s Trail. As far as I know, it has nothing to do with me. Second, take the drive up to Mount Charleston. It’s only about 30 minutes north of Las Vegas and you’ll feel like you’re in another part of the country. I went just a few weeks ago and experience snow for the first time in my life - in the middle of the desert.

Question #2 We all know that you can gamble in Vegas, but I’m looking for some other things to do there. Have any ideas of places to check out? - Sean I’m not a golfer. The few times I have actually played resulted in several broken clubs. But Las Vegas is home to some of the world’s great golf courses, so I hear. Besides the aforementioned Wynn & JW Marriott courses, my golfer friends say the three courses at the Paiute Resort are a must-play. There’s a lot to take in when you get to Las Vegas for the first time and you’re not going to be able to do everything you wanted to. So know that going in, and it just helps you plan the next trip! Also, the rumors of no clocks in the casino are true. There’s no way to tell time in there for a good reason. As far as money goes - that, my friend, is completely up to you. It all depends on which types of restaurants you want to eat at, how much gambling you’re going to do and what other stuff you are looking to check out. One tip though, always have a supply of $1 bills with you. Tipping keeps the economy moving in Las Vegas - so make sure and help out anyone who helps you, from the doormen to the maids to the taxi drivers to the waiters. ne of the most common things people ask me about Las Vegas is the nightlife. They want to know how to find a cool nightclub, which clubs play the best music, where they’ll have the best time, etc. There are a lot of different factors that go into finding the right club. It’s not as cut and dry as it used to be. So I’ve turned to Mecca Entertainment’s Bill Le for answers. He lives in Las Vegas and it’s his job to get you into the club you’re looking for.

Dale Blasingame: One question I get all the time is, “Are there certain clubs to go to on certain nights?” I know that’s still true to a certain extent, but aren’t the days of “This is the only place to go on this night” over? Bill Le: Pretty much every club is good on a Friday or Saturday. Other than that, all clubs in Vegas have an industry night. So find out which clubs are having industry parties when you’re in town. DB: And just to be clear, industry nights are when workers at other clubs and bars in Las Vegas are invited to come party. BL: Right. DB: So what’s your best advice for someone looking to find a place to have fun in Las Vegas?

DB: Can you give us any secrets people can pull to get special treatment? BL: Act and look the part and always take care of those who take care of you. Always exercise proper club etiquette. If you don’t know what proper “club etiquette” is, then ask. This differs from city to city. DB: Couldn’t agree more about taking care of people. It’s amazing how far a good tip will go with a door guy or a waitress. So if you could only go to three clubs the rest of your life, which three would you choose?
