hen most people think of St. Thomas, they picture swarms of tourists engulfing the shorelines as they step out of their mega cruise ships. Perhaps they envision it simply as a stepping stone to the much-less developed island of St. John. But as the second largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands (and arguably the most popular), St. Thomas offers any traveler the perfect tropical getaway. Tucked away in seclusion, about a half hour’s drive from the airport of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas’ capital city, lays the beautiful Mediterranean-inspired oasis that is The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas. With the perfect backdrop of the deep ocean blue hues of the 26

Caribbean Sea, The Ritz-Carlton sits immaculately on the shores of Great Bay. 15 Years of Excellence This island resort opened its doors to travelers 15 years ago this December, marking 15 years of excellence in luxury accommodations and impeccable service. The resort sits on 30-acres of lush vegetation and tropical surroundings, all while providing the romantic pair that private Caribbean getaway they envisioned. Luxurious Accommodations To say that a Ritz room is anything but ordinary is an understatement. The St. Thomas property offers 180 luxurious guest rooms, including ocean view suites and

Much like an all-inclusive resort would offer, water sports are included at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas. For the active pair looking to do more than just lounge poolside, paddle boats, kayaks, Hobie Cats, windsurfers and snorkel equipment are all complimentary at the resort. Team Cocktail

by: Lyndsey Huggins

eam Cocktail may have been created on the white sand beaches of the Caribbean but that doesn’t limit our travels to other tropical destinations. Which is why we decided to check out an island a little closer to home, Maui. If you’re looking for a lush, tropical paradise, but don’t have time to get a passport, we highly suggest checking out this amazing U.S. island destination. As Team Cocktail and we like to enjoy life in a t-shirt, shorts, flip flops…and with a drink in hand which fits in perfectly with the aloha lifestyle. So as we do on all of our travels we set out to find the best beaches, bars, restaurants and sights that allow our laid back personalities to come through.

T

BEST BEACH This was a tie so here are our top two! Kaanapali Beach: This West Maui beach offers three miles of white sand and crystal clear water and was once named America’s Best Beach. If you like having access to resorts, bars, restaurants and shopping this is the perfect beach for you. The beach is a short walk from the action and provides a great place to relax. Napili Beach: If you are looking for something more laid back and quite, this is it! The crescent shaped Napili Bay Beach has fairly calm waters and beautiful views. Since there are no major resorts or restaurants near by we suggest packing a cooler. If you travel like Team Cocktail, don’t forget to include a 6 pack of your favorite local brew. We suggest the Longboard Lager! BEST SUNSET Merriman’s Restaurant I’m sure guidebooks and frequent Maui travelers will disagree with us on this but we loved watching the sunset from Merriman’s, a restaurant in Kapalua. They have extensive outdoor seating with spectacular, unobstructed 36

views of the sunset. Oh and they mix some great cocktails! If you go please find Sally and tell her Team Cocktail sent you. She was our favorite server on the island. BEST RESTAURANT The Gazebo: This charming little tiki hut of a restaurant is situated in Napili Bay. It is part of a small condo community and does an amazing business. The macadamia nut & banana pancakes (with the whipped cream) are the BEST breakfast food we have ever had. You will have to wait in line as it is probably one the most popular restaurants on the island, but trust us, you won’t be disappointed. Tip: Bring a cooler with your favorite beverages i.e. bloody mary’s, mimosa’s, etc. They don’t serve alcohol but you can bring your own in. Brilliant! BEST LOCAL BEER Kona Brewing Company: Longboard Island Lager Our motto is Travel Global, Drink Local. While we suggest that you try all of the Kona Brewing Company beers to find out which one you like for yourself. We did our own taste test and our favorite was the Longboard Island Lager. They describe it as “a delicate, slightly spicy, hop aroma compliments the malty body of this beer.” We describe it as refreshing and delicious! Cheers! www.thehotelguide.com
