LE MONASTERE DES AUGUSTINES a unique wellness adventure T

o understand the uniqueness of Le Monastère des Augustines, we must go back 386 years. Founded in 1639 by three Augustinian Nuns, this Monastery Hospital was the first on the continent north of Mexico, laying the foundations for our current healthcare system. Historical Significance These women were hospital owners, nurses, pharmacists and entrepreneurs. Faced with their community’s decline, the Augustinian Sisters began a 20-years reflection process to entrust the public with safeguarding their heritage. Completely restored, Le Monastère des Augustines reopened in 2015 as a secular and modern haven of culture and wellness, where healing bodies & souls has always been the mission. A “Nurturing Sanctuary” There is something very special about the spirit of the place. Many visitors refer to it as a nurtuing sanctuary. Perhaps it is the compassion and the care that makes them

feel in a safe space and allows them to slowly let go and to let us take care of them with love and tenderness. Holistic Health Approach The guest’s journey at Le Monastère is inspired by the way the the Augustinians lived their lives through action and contemplation. What we offer is based on holistic health principals where the healing focuses on the body, the mind, the emotional and spiritual pillars. We believe that when those four pillars are strong and stable you can live a healthy life. Every guest lives a unique experience as we personalize the wellness packages to respect the needs of every individual. It all begins with a call from our staff prior to their visit to plan their stay. True Connection... We offer all visitors several ways to connect with the Augustinian heritage: experiential accommodation, a museum, archive centre, a program of activities around holistic health and culture, a mindful & healthy cuisine and spa treatments.

“A State of Calm” At Le Monastère, we favor a state of calm and slowness where we invite guests to savor silence and contemplation, to be mindful and to explore their senses. We also encourage disconnection with outside distractions to reconnect with the heart, to hear their inner voice, to feel their bodies, to feel their souls. We believe that everyone has what it takes inside of them to heal, but unfortunately nowadays everyone is so busy, and everything goes so fast that we seem to have forgotten how slowing down, reconnecting to oneself and simply being instead of doing can have an incredible impact on our wellbeing. Monkman. Made is one of Bali’s most legendary surfing pioneers and one of the most successful and respected locals, having travelled the world and surfing as a sponsored Quiksilver team rider. He made history as the first Balinese surfer to travel to Hawaii, making his mark by surfing Hawaii’s famed Pipeline surf break. Likewise, Holly has over twenty years of experience both in professional surfing, as well

as in the surf industry. In her youth, she was a sponsored professional surfer, and later helped develop the careers of several world tour surfer champions as Roxy’s Global Sports Marketing Manager. “Kuta has long been known as a surfing hotspot, and to be in partnership with Mamaka and be a part of the Ovolo family is exciting as it will certainly attract surfers from around the globe to ride the waves of the Kuta Beach once more.” said Made Switra, Co-Founder of Quiksilver Bali Surf Academy. History Lesson Surfing was first introduced in Indonesia by an American couple, Bob and Louis Koke. Around the mid-1930s, they embarked on a trip to Bali and decided to settle on the exotic island. Bob, an avid surfer who first experienced surf culture during his time in Hawaii, became the first person to surf the waves of Kuta Beach. He taught some of the locals to surf, which sparked

35

the beginning of the island’s long and unique surf history. Back then, surfboards were commonly crafted out of hollowed-out teak wood, which was heavy and quite difficult to manoeuvre. In the late 1930s, Made Switra’s grandfather, who had a penchant for shaping wooden boards, discovered Bob Koke’s abandoned surfboard and decided to bring it home. It was then that he created the first-ever handmade surfboard in Bali, which was carved to an iconic shape made out of wood from local trees. This legendary surfboard is now showcased in all its glory in Mamaka’s lobby. On the partnership, Joel Bartlett, General Manager of Mamaka by Ovolo says “At Mamaka, we aim to provide guests with good vibrations and enjoy the ultimate Bali experience. To have Quiksilver Bali Surf Academy as our official partner, our goal is we aim to give guests an exceptional surfing experience through the surf academy’s outstanding surf lessons, given all within our prime location ast the birthplace of Bali’s surf culture.” For more information and booking, please visit ovolohotels.com/mamaka/mamaka-bali-surf-academy/

A COLOMBIAN ADVENTURE solo traveling, making memories

by: Melissa Mireles

edellin, the city of eternal spring. It has an enticing name, doesn’t it? It displayed more than great weather, providing a variety of delicious food, architecture, landscapes, history, agriculture, and outdoor activities. A great fit for anyone who visits. My Solo Trip I started my solo trip in the center of Medellin, staying at the InterContinental Medellin Hotel. During my first evening, I dined in the famous Andrés Carne de Res Restaurant where the music inspired my Latin side to come out and play, everyone swayed in ways one didn’t know they could. As an active individual, I strive to make my trips compliment my lifestyle. I made my way to the Centro de Boterno where it was busy with fast moving locals and shopping centers. It was also the home to Antioquia Museum where Colombian natives Fernando Boterno’s and Pedro Nel Gomez large galleries were displayed. A Rich History Medellin has a rich history and presently continues to heal. Comuna-13 was once a notoriously dangerous part of Medellin but has been positively influenced by art and community functions. I recall the streets packed with vibrant colors, children playing sports, and polychromatic brick homes with mountains in the background. With an interest in agriculture, I met with Medellin Adventure Trails for an ATV tour around the beautiful plantations of Guarne and Rio Negro. The animals and

M

flower farms provided more than a great view, it displayed the importance of farming in Colombia. Today it provides a fifth of Colombian jobs. We finished the tour at Truchera la Honda, a popular recreational trout farm. I had the best coconut rice of my life that day, a sweet end to my 5-day trip in Medellin. Explore Cartagena I then traveled to the historic city of beauty lying within colonial stone walls, Cartagena for 2 days. Residing at Hotel Casa Lola Deluxe Gallery represented Colombian realism because every

corner told a story, and its ambience reflected the different cultures that forged Cartagena. Additionally, providing an exquisite menu of Caribbean food. Balconies with flowers, cobblestone streets, and colonial architecture were very popular in Cartagena. People displayed their tropical and bohemian style clothing with purpose. Given my short stay, I made it a priority to participate in the city’s free walking tour to learn its history. I enjoyed learning about Cartagena’s role in the expansion of the Spanish Empire, inquisition, and pirate attacks. I recommend anyone who travels to take a free walking tour of the city, it allows you to learn and helps you determine what drives your interest for the rest of your stay. Beach time.. A trip isn’t complete without touching sand and wa-

ter. I visited Playa Blanca the next day. Located in the south of Cartagena on the island of Baru, known for its clear water and seafood selection. While heavily congested with visitors, I enjoyed sipping on a Paloma, watching children play, and meditating while floating in the water. Serenity. *While Cartagena’s hub is filled with beauty, I do not recommend women to travel alone to outside barrios.

TRAVEL IS BACK

may we never be the same by: Adam Asher

ravel is back. But will it ever be the same? My name is Adam Asher. I make documentaries and podcasts that showcase inspiring humanitarian organizations worldwide. I missed travel. I’m glad it’s back. But I hope it’s changed forever. The pandemic was a dreadfully monumental time. It affected everything. Regardless of how we may feel about these last couple years and all that came with them, we can agree on this: the pandemic changed our lives. And it will forever be the point in time that separates the way it once was from the way it is. The pandemic brought about great fear and frustration. It took loved ones and friends, opportunity and revenue. It damaged our health, our mindset, and our ability to move around. It kept the world from us. And it kept us from each other. We’ve all suffered. What we’ve been through is a terrible thing. And I’m glad it is ending. I’m glad we now have

T

the chance to get back to living, to build the new normal that awaits us. But I don’t want things to be as they were. I want something more. As we seek to put this awful time in human history behind us, let us not forget what we learned from it. Let us not fall back into old patterns and perspectives. Let’s go beyond status quo. The pandemic taught us that life is a gift, that the way things are right now is a gift. It showed us that we must live—without delay or excuse. We must make the choice to do those things that matter. We must make the time to go and explore, to see and do and love. Because life can change in an instant. The pandemic taught us what it means to lose. The people and the opportunities we loved so much were here one day and gone the next. We had. We lost. And we were powerless to stop it. We were confronted by a reality we don’t much like yet must embrace: we are vulnerable.

The last two years also taught us that people are precious. We witnessed the worldwide suffering, the unthinkable toll. We watched as loved ones and strangers suffered. It caused fear and frustration, yes. But it also brought about compassion. And compassion is good. So much about this era will be rightfully remembered as negative. It wasn’t a good thing. But it did remind us of good things. It did teach us that we must live with a sense of gratitude for each new day. We must live in humility, aware of our own weakness and limitation. And we simply must value those around us. As we now plan and take our next amazing trip, may we cherish it like never before. May we remember that every dinner with an ocean view is beautiful. Every cup of coffee on a mountain balcony is delicious. Every stamp in the passport is a treasure. Every moment with that loved one is precious. It’s all a gift.

43

My advice? Book. Go. See. And love. Remember that everyone you encounter along the way has been through one of the toughest seasons in their life. They too have lost. They too have felt powerless. And the kindness you show them will mean the world. Travel is back. May we never be the same.
