SUMMER FUN

rhinos, K oalas, turtles, jelly
fish, pendulum and outdoor adventures – it’s truly going to be a wild summer in San Antonio. A top U.S. destination for families seeking a fun and affordable vacation, the Alamo City offers a myriad of kid-friendly attractions and is a quick nonstop flight from numerous major U.S. cities. In recent years, the city has been undergoing a head-to-toe expansion with family-friendly experiences taking a lead, and this summer, new offerings at popular destinations Six Flags Fiesta Texas, SeaWorld San Antonio and the San Antonio Zoo will be complemented by exciting debuts including SEA LIFE San Antonio Aquarium and the just-opened Legoland Discovery Center Playground. Rounding out the options for families are a variety of kid-friendly public spaces such as the recently revamped Hemisfair, the new Confluence Park and Pearl, as well as additional unique attractions such as the city’s iconic 15-mile-long River Walk and the Doseum, an interactive STEM-focused museum dedicated entirely to children. Here are some highlights of what’s new for this summer along with some key family-friendly restaurants and accommodations. San Antonio Zoo: Now through September 2, visitors can enjoy a summer down under as the San Antonio Zoo introduces “Wild Australia.” After more than two decades, koalas are coming back to the zoo with this all-new Australian-themed attraction. Experiences and educational activities will include an Australian Aviary and the all-new Roo Walkabout. The San Antonio Zoo is a unique combination of global conservation, wildlife education and family fun. “Wild Australia” is included with standard admission and free for Annual Pass holders. park will celebrate its 40th anniversary with summer fun while giving back. Aside from riding tubes on the famous park river, visitors can ride a continuous wave on the park’s inland surf ride, Boogie Bahn, fly high on the Sky Coaster, tube on the Torrent wave river and get rocketed uphill on the Master Blaster Water Coaster. This year, Schlitterbahn will host its fourth annual American Heroes Week with free admission to members of the military, police, firefighters and EMTs during May 27 through June 2. SONOMA COUNTY
drive & experience california S
ummer’s here: You and your “horses” need some fresh air and exercise. Sonoma County’s roads are built for horsepower. So, put the top down or open the sunroof. Take time to savor the natural beauty as you cruise along hidden gems like the Pacific Coast Highway, a “foodie freeway,” or a classic Wine Country drive. At almost any given angle, the views in Sonoma County demand attention. Observe neat rows of vineyards stretching over gentle hills, ocean surf pounding against rocky bluffs, or towering giants — coastal redwoods — holding aloft a green canopy that seems to pierce the sky. Here are a few of the spectacular drives in Sonoma County. Classic California Coast: The iconic Highway 1 hugs Pacific coastline through Sonoma County for 50-plus miles. Start at the south end – Bodega Bay and head north to the Gualala River. The winding, dramatic drive is studded with overlooks until you reach Jenner. Then the road gets curvy. The grays, blues, whites, and silvers of the changing ocean and sky give way to the greens of the forest that rise sharply up by the passenger’s side. Stop along the way to wade in a sheltered cove, stretch your legs at a hidden beach, glimpse the distant past, and enjoy the natural beauty. The Need for Speed: Start at Sonoma Raceway, in Eastern Sonoma County, and drive north on Arnold Drive/121. Continue on Highway 12 into downtown Sonoma – the birthplace of California as a U.S. territory. Continue on Highway 12 through
the famed Sonoma Valley wine region into Santa Rosa. (Sonoma Raceway offers drag racing most every Wednesday night through Nov. 14 for fans who would like to race the quarter-mile drag strip.) “Foodie Freeway”: Highway 116 from Sonoma to Jenner takes in the major regions of Sonoma County. Start at Gloria Ferrer and travel through the countryside to Jenner’s River’s End – one of the best sunset spots on the coast. You’ll encounter grapes, cheese, sheep, cows, The Barlow in Sebastopol, a hexagonal plaza (Cotati), some apples, redwoods, a river, and the Pacific. Classic Wine Country Drive: Healdsburg to Lake Sonoma: Enjoy the historic town plaza in Healdsburg, then drive north on Dry Creek Road. Have your designated drivers handy: This premier wine region will entice you to stop for a taste, or two. Finish your drive to Lake Sonoma and be stunned by this beautiful reservoir that supplies drinking water to Sonoma and Marin counties. Delectable Destination: Valley Ford and Freestone, from Petaluma: Start in Petaluma and drive out to Valley Ford, stop for lunch or a snack at Rocker Oysterfeller’s. Turn inland towards Freestone (stop at Wild Flour Bakery for amazing bread). Continue through Sebastopol and stop for wine and lunch or a snack at Russian River Vineyards. Continue on via Westside Road to Healdsburg. At the end of a long day of “riding,” stop in at a local watering hole and discover a new favorite wine, brew, or cocktail as you nosh on regional delicacies. Have a good night’s rest and hit the “trails” again tomorrow.

TEXAS GULF COAST
a myriad of fun awaits W
ith the wide variety of entertainment and attractions along the Texas Gulf Coast, a surprise visit from family turned into a weekend of fun for adults and kids alike. Whether on water, on land, or up in the air, we all discovered something new, and made great family memories in the process. Working hard, following the rules, and being responsible are all key to being successful in life. Every now and then, however, it’s nice—even healthy—to let your inner child loose for a little play date and bring your kids along. There’s hardly a better place for that than the Texas Gulf Coast. There, families will find numerous ways to engage the imagination and tickle the fancy. A few of our friends with children visited over the summer, so we had the opportunity to revisit some popular kid-oriented destinations. The Bay Area Galveston Island (45 minutes south of Houston) is a historic, beautiful, and ideal destination for family
fun, but there are two great attractions at the halfway point that make for memorable stops. Family Fun Even pulling into Space Center Houston was exciting. Out on the lawn was a replica of the space shuttle Independence piggybacked on the enormous and historic 747 jetliner that ferried the actual shuttles into space. One of the area’s top attractions, NASA’s Johnson Space Center draws more than 800,000 visitors a year. All the exhibits orbit around space science and exploration. There was an interactive display showing what it would be like to live on the International Space Station, and we all felt dwarfed but delighted by the huge Saturn V rocket. The Stellar Science Show was an amusing way to learn about space, thanks to an entertaining host who explained complex “science stuff” in a way that we mortals could understand. A five-minute drive down NASA Parkway was Kemah Boardwalk. This unique attraction looked just like an old-timey amusement park, and was right on
WWW.THEHOTELGUIDE.COM
the water between Trinity and Galveston Bays. Even pulling into Space Center Houston was exciting. Out on the lawn was a replica of the space shuttle Independence piggybacked on the enormous and historic 747 jetliner that ferried the actual shuttles into space. The brave ones in our group went directly to the Boardwalk Bullet, a 96-foot-tall wooden roller coaster, while the rest of us opted for the Double-Decker Carousel, where we could choose to ride on dragons, sea monsters, or unicorns. After lunch at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., we went to the Stingray Reef to pet and feed live stingrays, and walked through the rainforest exhibit to see but NOT pet and feed snakes, scorpions, and tarantulas. Galveston Island The only thing difficult about going to Galveston is to narrow down the possibilities. As a treat, we checked into the Hotel Galvez—a luxurious historic hotel on the Galveston Seawall with a great pool area, plus courtesy bikes and helmets for tooling about the town. Right then, however, we were ready to get wet, so we headed to Schlitterbahn Waterpark, a 33acre water wonderland of slides, chutes, rapids, and water coasters. After a twirl on the Loopy Luge, we were tubing along the Kristal River discussing the delightful “Schlitterbahn Experience” with another guest. We talked about the original park in New Braunfels, the one we’d been to on South Padre Island, and my fellow floater said the state’s newest Schlitterbahn was soon to open in Corpus Christi. After a walk along the Seawall and a free roundtrip ride across Galveston Bay on the old Bolivar Ferry, we had pizza on The Strand, a historic avenue near the harbor. On Sunday morning, we all indulged in the Hotel Galvez Sunday brunch, named one of “Texas’ Best Brunches” by Southern Living. Then it was off to the Pleasure Pier. Designed to resemble the original Pleasure Pier that opened in the 1940s, the current 1,100-footlong wooden pier was filled with rides, midway games, and another roller coaster—the Iron Shark— with its loops and curves visible for miles either way
17
down the beach. After a walk along the Seawall and a free roundtrip ride across Galveston Bay on the old Bolivar Ferry, we had pizza on The Strand, a historic avenue near the harbor. We all rode the Pirate’s Plunge, a log flume ride with two drops of more than 40 feet, but I—a proud but safe wimp—watched as the others rode the Texas Star Flyer and the Sea Dragon. The Coastal Bend About three hours south of Houston is one of our favorite sections of the Gulf Coast. Anchored by Corpus Christi, the region offers beaches, birdwatching, dolphin sightings, and history lessons— specifically in the form of a 910-foot-long, World War II-era aircraft carrier. The USS Lexington was commissioned in 1943, and saw action in nearly every major operation in the Pacific theater. Now in permanent residence in Corpus Christi Bay, the ship is open for tours. After we explored all 20 of both the vintage and modern aircraft on its deck, we went below to see how sailors experienced day-to-day life on the ship. Ready for some waves, we took the short drive to Port Aransas, a picturesque beach town that’s especially welcoming for families. Not only does it have a long, sandy shoreline, but it’s also full of fun, kidoriented activities. We rented a couple of beach buggies and cruised around town, stopping to get our pictures taken inside the giant shark mouth at the Destination Beach & Surf Gift Shop. After lunch, we signed up for Sandcastle Building Lessons and, together we created our own “beach town.” FUN FACT When the Galveston Seawall was built in 1904, it was a model of modern construction, hailed in newspapers and journals across the country as the “epitome of American pluck.” What was a three-mile bulwark against high tides is now a 10-mile gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Bikes, roller blades, and pedal carts are a common sight on the wall, and several piers run to restaurants, shops, and entertainment.

NEVADA
summer has never been hotter N
evada welcomes stargazers, thespians, kayakers, exotic car enthusiasts and pool partygoers with a summer of events and Nevada adventure. With star parties in Ely, drag races in Fallon, and world-class performances throughout RenoTahoe, summer in Nevada combines desert heat with a splash of entertainment. Here’s how to get outside and explore the state this season. Stargazing and Stripes Not only does Nevada have some of the most impressive Fourth of July fireworks shows in the nation — including the acclaimed Lights on the Lake in Lake Tahoe and various rooftop displays throughout Las Vegas — it also has some of the darkest skies in the U.S. Jump aboard the Ely Star Train with the Dark Rangers of Great Basin National Park for a guided astronomy tour. Tours are available at 7:30 p.m. July 12, Aug. 2 and Sept. 6. Named an International Dark Sky Park in 2016, Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada boasts weekly Dark Ranger programs, telescope viewing sessions and full-moon hikes. Don’t miss the 10th annual Astronomy Festival Sept. 26-28. On your way out, take a trip through the Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park, just 10 miles south of Ely, for even darker skies and clearer views. The six beehive-shaped charcoal ovens were used in the late 1800s to help process silver and pro-
vide shelter for travelers. Art and Cantaloupes Reno’s 23rd annual Artown festival, July 1-31, showcases artists and musicians with more than 500 events and 100 workshops around the community. Events range from music, dance and theater, to film, history, literary events and workshops. Headliners at the Hawkins Amphitheater at Bartley Ranch include Pink Martini, July 9 — an international, 12-piece orchestra fusing classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop music; Sheléa, July 18 — a traditional pop, jazz, R&B and soul vocalist; The SteelDrivers July 25
WWW.THEHOTELGUIDE.COM
— a Nashville-based bluegrass band; and the Koresh Dance Company, July 26. For a perfect midsummer night’s eve, gather lakeside at Sand Harbor State Park for the annual Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Aug. 5 to July 25, featuring “The Taming of the Shrew” and Million Dollar Quartet. Catch the natural alpenglow, a reddish luminescence across the high Sierra, as the sun sets behind the outdoor amphitheater. One of Nevada’s longest-running agricultural festivals, the Fallon Cantaloupe Festival, celebrates the area’s special Hearts O’ Gold cantaloupe and other farm-fresh delights, Aug. 25. Enjoy cantaloupe-flavored everything, live music, family events (including a cornhole tournament), and Cantaloupe 5k and Fun Run. Full Throttle Summer Rev your engines— it’s octane season. With classic car shows and record-breaking speeds, Nevada’s raceways come alive this summer. Don’t miss Bonneville Speed Week on the Bonneville Salt Flats, (just a 15-minute drive from West Wendover), where racers attempt to break land-speed records in hot rods, roadsters, motorcycles, streamliners, diesel trucks and more.
19
In Fallon, you can cheer on experienced and junior drag racers at the Top Gun Speedway through September. Ever want to get your hands on a Lamborghini? For exotic car lovers, head to Speed Vegas where guests can race Ferraris, Porches and other luxury vehicles around a 1.5-mile banked track. For classic car connoisseurs, Hot August Nights returns to Reno, Sparks and Virginia City in August. Poodle skirts and cuffed jeans are back in fashion at this weeklong celebration of rock’n’roll and yesteryear as thousands of classic cars parade the streets. America’s Best Pool Parties For a sizzling summer experience, head to the neon oasis of Las Vegas for its iconic daytime pool parties. Featuring chart-topping DJs, private VIP cabanas and bikini contests, Las Vegas’ pools provide an adult summer playground that ensures the party doesn’t have to end when the sun comes up. Sip handcrafted piña coladas and float on a giant inflatable flamingo at the new NoMad Las Vegas rooftop pool. Shower in champagne and listen to beats by Calvin Harris at Wet Republic, the longest running day club in Las Vegas. Indulge in over-the-top entertainment and beach chic attire at Encore Beach Club at the Wynn, with live entertainment including David Guetta and The Chainsmokers. Take a dip in the Marquee Dayclub, one of three pools at The Cosmopolitan; or dig your toes in Mandalay Bay’s 2,700 tons of sand surrounding a quarter-mile-long lazy river. New Walker River State Recreation Area Despite being known for its expansive desert terrain and rugged mountain ranges, Nevada is also home to lesser known alpine lakes, meandering rivers and cool blue desert oases. Among them, the 62-mile Walker River weaves throughout the Great Basin Area in western Nevada. The new Walker River State Recreation Area is the result of several land acquisitions, which now contains four recreation units: the Pitchfork Ranch, Rafter 7 Ranch, Flying M Ranch and the Nine Mile Ranch. Among them, the Elbow section of the Nine Mile Ranch and the Pitchfork Ranch are the first to open to the public. Visitors can camp, hunt, fish, go off-roading or enjoy a family float along the East Fork’s Class I and Class II rapids.

TASTE OF MONTANA
a surpising culinary scene T
When it comes to Montana, one of the most underrated elements of the state is its culinary scene. While it may not be top of mind when it comes to planning a summer vacation, Montana’s food and drink options are vibrant, mouthwatering and sure to complement any trip. Plus, with the state’s rich agricultural industry, there are plenty of ways to taste the flavors of Montana—such as huckleberries, Flathead cherries and bison—in the form of locally grown products and Montanamade dishes, desserts and drinks. There are several culinary hotspots found throughout Montana, with anchors that include Billings, Bozeman, Missoula and Whitefish. Montana’s largest city, Billings has a robust food and drink scene, with several restaurants that showcase some of the best in dining, from steakhouses to seafood and locally sourced entrees and spirits. It’s also home to the state’s only selfguided, walkable brewery district. The 1.5-mile-long brewery route is in downtown Billings and includes six breweries, two distilleries and a cider house. A beautiful and easy 2.5-hour drive from Billings, Bozeman is an elegant western town that’s become a hub for outdoor activities like fishing, skiing, mountain biking and hiking in and around the six
mountain ranges that surround the city. After a day of exploring, venture to one of Bozeman’s distinct neighborhoods. Both Downtown Bozeman and the Cannery District are great places to experience the flavors of this corner of Montana. Local favorites include Montana Ale Works, Dave’s Sushi, Open Range, Feed Café and more. Sitting at the confluence of five valleys, Missoula is the second-largest city in Montana and its historic downtown is one of the best dining locations in the state. From craft breweries and distilleries, to restaurants that specialize in Montana-centric meals, travelers are sure to find palate-pleasing entrees and treats in the Garden City. The state’s most famous ice cream shop—Big Dipper—also got its start in Missoula and is a favorite summer destination. If you want to sample locally made
WWW.THEHOTELGUIDE.COM
beer, consider taking a guided tour of the city’s breweries with River City Brews Rafting Tours or a pedal-powered tour with Thirst Gear. A scenic drive north of Missoula, and located an easy 30 minutes west of Glacier National Park, is the mountain community of Whitefish. While home to around 7,500 residents, Whitefish’s dining scene is one that you’d expect to find in a much larger city. In this mountain town, chefs focus on sourcing fresh and local ingredients to create distinct menu offerings. When you travel to Whitefish, you’ll find an array of diverse restaurant options—including Southern-inspired cuisine, Italian, sushi and steak— as well as bakeries, breweries and distilleries. But rest assured, Montana’s local flavor and culinary offerings expand far beyond these urban hubs. Local favorites and small-town gems include pizza at Moose’s Saloon in Kalispell, pork chop sandwiches at Pork Chop John’s in Butte, hamburgers at Parker’s Restaurant in Drummond, Serrano’s in East Glacier Park and the Jersey
21
Lilly in Ingomar, as well as a variety of incredible restaurants in Big Sky. As you travel through the state, be sure to keep your eyes open for a variety of trails that will lead you to more mouth-watering and thirst-quenching destinations. Sip on a local brew by exploring the stops that make up the Montana Brewers Trail. Chances are, along your travels you’ll see barley fields where many Montana brewers source their grains before transforming them into beers that are distinctly Montana-made. Try sweet treats on Central Montana’s Pie Trail. This expansive trail focuses on all things pie as it winds through 19 drool-worthy destinations in 15 communities, with numerous towns and cities to explore along the way. Learn more about Montana’s culinary scene, including craft distilleries, cideries and meaderies, wineries, breweries and farmers markets, at WWW.VISITMT.COM.

TRAVELING?
5 tips for healthy eating
by: Bridget Therese
raveling and staying healthy can sometimes be a challenge. Below, our Wellness Travel Expert, Bridget Therese offers some convenient solutions for your next adventure.
T
1) BRING SNACKS - It may sound like a lot of trouble, but trust me on this one! If you have a favorite protein bar or even a meal replacement shake, this is a great opportunity to pack them and bring them with you. Why? Because if you can get small yet satisfying meals in throughout the day, you will be way less likely to splurge on other high calorie meals. Another bonus, it will save you money and time! 2) PLAN YOUR SPLURGES No true vacation is complete without that amazing breakfast or dinner, let’s be honest! But instead of having 18 amazing dinners, plan just a couple that you can look forward to and know that you will enjoy every moment of it to your little hearts content. Not every meal has to be epic, but plan a couple epic meals and enjoy the heck out of it, guilt free! 3) PLAN WHERE TO EAT AHEAD OF TIME - When you aren’t having one of your epic meals, do make healthy choices. One of the best ways to do this is to research restaurants as part of your travel and trip planning. Find a few places that offer healthier options. The great thing about traveling these days is that more and more restaurants are offering healthier choices. You just need to do a little foot work and scout them out. Planning ahead of time saves
the “where do you wanna eat? I don’t know, where do you wanna eat?” conversation and keeps you on the healthy track. 4) DON’T BE AFRAID TO MODIFY YOUR MENU ITEMS - I’m not saying be that person who orders the Roasted Chicken with Asiago Polenta and Truffled Mushrooms and then asks them to remove everything cook it on different spices and basically makes up a whole new dish on the spot! No, I’m talking about simple changes that won’t embarrass your friends and family, but still save the calories. Try asking for veggies to be steamed, or cooked “dry” no butter or oil. Ask for your fajitas to be cooked dry, ask for whole wheat pancakes, and egg white omelets. There are simple modifications that can you can request but go a long way. 5) CAREFUL WITH DRINKS - Just like planning out your splurge meals, be mindful of your drinks too. Those calories add up really quickly! Especially on vacation, it’s easy to keep the drinks flowing, but don’t forget about water! When you are in a hot beachy climate, it’s extra important to hydrate. Alternate drinks with water, don’t have drinks with every meal and always plan a sober ride. WELLNESS TRAVEL
luxury resort REVĪVŌ
S
etting a new standard for wellness retreats in Asia, luxury resort REVĪVŌ officially opened on the 30th March on 3 hectares of lush land in Bali. Meaning “I’ll live again”, the concept of REVĪVŌ is to soothe the spirit and rejuvenate the body through enriching the mind with a complete journey including relaxation activities, spa and holistic medicine treatments, and a personalised nutritional programme. The resort offers 16 Balinese-style suites, including two 4-bedroom villas that can be booked for more exclusive retreats, a restaurant, bar and pool side lounge, spa, hybrid fitness area and events space. BEAUTIFUL LOCATION Located amidst the breezy hills of Nusa Dua in south Bali, REVĪVŌ is surrounded by teak forest, dense tropical rainforest and the Indian ocean for the ultimate decompression from bustling city life. The resort offers bespoke programs based on
each individual’s needs, with the goal of achieving holistic “healing” through mind training and selfawareness, as opposed to treating specific illness or injuries. While each retreat can be tailor-made to suit individual goals, there is a regular schedule of immersive programs lead by experts in each area, which range in duration from 3 to 14 days long. This includes: • Emotional balance and mind training • Detox & organic weight loss • Sleep well • Anti-ageing & longevity • Destress & Relax • Mother-to-be Fitness is a key component of each retreat, which REVĪVŌ incorporates through a hybrid fitness area located on 8,000 square metres of verdant and peaceful land towards the rear of the resort. The area is comprised of a yoga barn, a martial arts hall,

a reformer Pilates studio, a gym with TRX, boxing and kinesis equipment, a 25-metre-long lap pool for aqua workouts and a 1,500 square metre landscaped park for outdoor exercises. The fitness offering focuses on hybrid workouts, with as much emphasis placed on inspiration as perspiration. There is a balance between the more intensive Yang - with heart-pumping HIIT sessions, and the softer Yin - with yoga and other gentler meditative and restorative practices like Qi Gong and meditation to simultaneously cultivate physical, mental and spiritual well-being. From group classes to private sessions or teacher trainings, the experience is completely customizable to support unique fitness and wellness goals. FOOD & BEVERAGE The food and beverage programme is equally important and is comprised of a restaurant, a Bar, and a pool side lounge, each of which operate under the philosophy of serving fresh, wholesome, organic and balanced meals for guests. Each venue serves food and drinks as close to their natural state as possible, with a mission to sharpen and delight taste buds, while continuously supporting health. Carefully designed by REVĪVŌ’s creative nutritionist chef, Aliwalu, the menus offer a selection of healthy recipes made with seasonal ingredients that will be adapted to suit each guest’s nutritional needs. The focus is on high protein dishes, which have a balanced amount of healthy fats, are low in carbs and free from gluten - with a Balinese twist. Using the finest organic ingredients, REVĪVŌ aims
27
to support local farmers, sustainable agriculture and environmentally friendly products, with no additives, preservatives or refined or processed ingredients in any of the dishes. HOLISTIC SPA The third component of REVĪVŌ is the holistic spa, which brings together authentic ancient Balinese healing traditions, aroma, hydro and chromo therapies and facilities to nurture the body and achieve overall well-being and balance. The spa stays true to the age-old tradition of using elements from the surrounding environments to heal – each therapeutic treatment, restorative massage and nurturing body and facial treatment is customised by highly skilled therapists using herbal-infused oils, aromas and massage techniques. The spa is comprised of five double treatment rooms, each with their own outdoor bath, and features two hydro jet Vichy shower beds, hot and chill plunge pools, a Jacuzzi, infrared saunas, steam rooms, gorgeous changing rooms, an aromatic garden and a salt water floating pool set amidst tropical greenery. TELEHEALTH
N
healthcare just a click away
obody plans on getting strep throat or twisting their ankle while on vacation or traveling for work. But when it happens, you can use your iPhone, Android or any mobile device to access a physician, get medical advice or, if needed, a prescription. It’s called telehealth, the delivery of healthcare via phone, tablet or computer, and it has the potential to save every consumer – and our nation’s healthcare system, including employers -- substantial amounts of time and money. Telehealth makes it possible for everyone to access quality, affordable care: • Individuals with limited benefits or little-to-no insurance coverage • Travelers who are on-the-road for business or recreation and need medical attention for non-emergent illnesses • People who forget to pack their prescription medications – or simply run out of Rx products COST-EFFECTIVE, CONVENIENT The fastest-growing segment of services in telehealth are those connecting consumers with clinicians 24/7. Typically, these are for nonemergency issues such as colds, flu, earaches and skin rashes, and they cost around $45 per consultation, compared with approximately $100 at a doctor’s office, $160 at an urgent-care clinic or $750+ at an emergency room. Some direct-to-consumer services enable users to connect 24/7 via phone or video with a boardcertified physician who can either prescribe medication or provide advice on what to do. They also offer nurse advice lines to provide answers to medical questions day or night, and the ability to email a specialist to get a quick response from a physician, dentist, pharmacist or other healthcare specialist. The popularity of telehealth comes on the heels of a trend in which employers are moving away from fully-insured health plans toward self-insurance, as
well as the rise of consumer-driven health plans or high-deductible plans that shift more of the costburden and decision-making responsibility onto the employees and their families. Bottom line: Telehealth makes it possible for everyone to drastically reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses. SAVES TIME, INCREASES PRODUCTIVITY Scheduling a doctor visit requires time off from work, dealing with unpredictable medical bills, and long wait times. For many, it can take an average of 24 days to schedule an appointment with a doctor, and can mean waiting for at least an hour to see the doctor. With the growing doctor shortage, fueled by aging baby boomers and population growth, this situation is likely to get worse. By providing access to medical advice more quickly than traditional office visits, telehealth can prevent individuals from needing care or getting sicker than necessary, and can also minimize lost productivity costs. FINDING RIGHT TELEHEALTH SERVICE Employers and consumers should look for a direct-to-consumer healthcare service that offers comphrehensive, nationwide telehealth connectivy at a low annual rate that covers the entire family. The service should rely on the highest quality physicians and use a large number of guidelines developed specifically for delivering care remotely, including a five-point scale for determining whether a sore throat, for example, is likely due to streptococcus infection that warrants antibiotics. By increasing access to physicians and specialists, telehealth can help ensure that patients receive the right care, at the right place, at the right time. KENYA, AFRICA
a true memory-making destination K
enya has been able to remain a must-visit safari destination for decades thanks to its iconic national parks and game reserves, and the irresistible drawcard that is the Great Wildebeest Migration. On top of that, Kenya has demonstrated an amazing ability to reinvent itself and remain relevant even as newer destinations clamor for attention. This year will see some awesome new luxury safari lodges open throughout Kenya – here’s our guide to the very best of them. If you’re considering a safari vacation in East Africa during 2019, at least some of these exciting new luxury safari lodges should be on your itinerary. Let us tell you why. Mugie House This is the latest go-to address in the Governor’s Camp Collection and is situated on a private 80-square-mile conservancy within the fabled Laikipia County. Originally dating from the 1980s, Mugie House is currently undergoing extensive renovations in order to be ready for its October 2019 opening. From its position on a ridge, Mugie House and the nine guest cottages overlook a waterhole which is consistently popular with local wildlife (including
big cats). This new luxury property offers the opportunity to enjoy moments of relaxation like afternoon tea as tropical birds flit around the gardens. Equally, more active pursuits including canoeing on the large dam that forms the focal point of the conservancy. The numerous small islands in the dam provide ideal spots for picnic lunches (including ingredients grown in Mugie House’s own organic vegetable garden) and sundowners. While out on the water, guest may well encounter elephants cooling off in the dam. Back at the lodge, the spa and private plunge pools will add to the relaxed ambience, and allow

guests to recharge their safari batteries between game drives. Mara Nyika Mara Nyika is the latest offering from Great Plains and combines delightful privacy with the expansive backdrop of the private Naboisho Conservancy. Game drives also enter the Masai Mara, but there is more than enough wildlife in the conservancy to justify this being the focus of each guest’s stay. Mara Nyika is due to open in August 2019, but its design is such a wonderful distillation of all that is best about the Kenyan safari experience that it will have a timeless quality to it. Light canvas tents under immediately recognizable flattopped thorn trees convey the romance and beauty of Kenya at first glance, while early reports on the local game suggesting that is prolific. Guests will be able to channel their child as they use the suspended treehouse-style walkways between their tents and the main area. Privacy was a key consideration in the design of the camp, and is entirely in keeping with the seclusion of the setting. Mara Nyika promises guests the freedom to simply be themselves and enjoy the best of Kenya’s safari offering. Loisaba Lodo Springs With just eight individual tented guest rooms,
33
Loisaba Lodo Springs is another new luxury safari lodge in Kenya that puts a premium on privacy. That said, it’s situated in a high-traffic area – if you count migrating elephants as ‘traffic’. The lodge is situated in the Loisaba Conservancy, a private protected area of some 57 000 acres within an important migratory corridor for these amazing animals. Loisaba is also vital to the future of lions, wild dogs and the little-known but hugely impressive Grévy’s zebra. With views extending all the way to the jagged, snow-capped magnificence of Mount Kenya, this area really does feel like the epicenter of the safari world. The lodge draws on years of experience in creating special places of sanctuary for humans, with the combined luxuries of space and simplicity. Everything a guest needs to feel pampered is immediately to hand, but there is nothing superfluous – in short, nothing is permitted to take away from the spectacular vistas and the sense of complete freedom. Loisaba Lodo Springs is a place to breathe deeply and slowly. Sarara Reteti House Sarara Reteti House is only due to open in early 2020, but from what we’re hearing it will certainly be worth the wait! Designed for exclusive-use bookings, this seven-bedroom safari house will be designed with family and multi-generational travel in mind. We’re seeing a huge increase in this kind of travel, so we’re excited to have a new luxury property that we can offer to families who like to vacation together. Scenically and culturally distinct, northern Kenya is generally drier than the rest of the country. This serves to concentrate wildlife around rivers and other sources of water, and the Samburu region is known for its elephant herds. It is of course also home to the Samburu people, who, like the Maasai, have proudly clung to their tribal traditions. From its setting within the Namunyak Conservancy, guests will also be able to visit the life-changing Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, and explore this stunning and unforgettable region. Activities on offer will include day and night game continued on next page

drives, guided bush walks, hikes in the forests of the Mathews Mountains, fly camping, horse riding and Samburu cultural community visits. Geoffrey Kent Suite at Olonana Geoffrey Kent is one of the pioneers of modern Kenyan safaris, and we’re sure he must be immensely proud of this new ultra-luxury suite that bears his name. The latest addition to Sanctuary Olonana in the Masai Mara, the Geoffrey Kent Suite at Olonana is surprisingly modern in design, but its architecture is intended to make the most of its spectacular setting on the banks of the Mara River. The two private bedrooms offer superb views thanks to the combination of floor-to-ceiling windows and wraparound decking that will allow guests to view the landscape and wildlife from every angle. The bathrooms can be opened up entirely to the

bush, enabling the romance of a starlit bath. The in-suite chef is always available to create snacks and meals as required, and these can be served either in the suite or in the outdoor private boma overlooking a hippo pool. Soft golden light and the opportunity – thanks to a dedicated private guide and vehicle – to shape their day exactly as they wish to – contributes to guests having a sense of being immersed not just in enviable luxury, but in the magic and mystery of Kenya itself. While these new lodges are likely to get a lot of attention this year, they are by no means the only stunning accommodation options in Kenya. PORTLAND, MAINE
what i discovered
by: Marie Hernandez, www.seriouslytravel.com
O
h how I love to explore a new destination. When I got the chance to explore Maine I couldn’t pack fast enough. Here’s what I discovered in Portland, Maine. Those that follow me regularly know that I usually spend a considerable amount of time abroad. My marketing and social media clients keep me busy with video/ drone and photography production but they also afford me the ability to explore some of the world’s most beautiful destinations. When I am stateside I try to spend a little time exploring my home country. This time, I had the opportunity to spend some time in Portland, Maine. I hadn’t been to Maine in more than 30 years so my curiosity was peaked. As I usually do, I reached out to a few hotels, restaurants, and tour companies for sponsorships. The following reviews can’t possibly cover completely the amazing experiences that I had. First stop… Inn By The Sea May is the time of year when spring is pushing through and trying to warm up the Northern East coast of the US. Although still cold, Maine’s beaches are vibrant with wildlife and plant life waking up from the winter. Inn By The Sea is situated on a gorgeous one-mile stretch of beach. From the nano second I arrived I was treated like royalty and knew I was in for the treat of a lifetime.
A smiling reception staff that, knowing I was on my way, had my room waiting and greeted me. Check in was incredibly quick and while I was waiting to meet manager, Rauni Kew, I was treated to a visit with the foster pup that was playing in the reception area. The team at Inn By The Sea works with the local animal shelter to help place dogs that need a forever home by fostering them in the hotel. (How in credible is that?) I was greeted by the manager and given a site tour of the beautiful ocean front hotel. Although modern and upgraded to meet the luxurious standards of her visitors, the hotel has its historical touches and “stories” throughout. My room wasn’t simply a room. I was given a two-bedroom suite with beautiful views of the grounds and the ocean. The staff has forgotten nothing within the suites and rooms at the hotel, including the most lavish bedding and linens. continued on next page

It was very hard for me to get out and experience the rest of the hotel. My suite had a fireplace where I sat and enjoyed some wonderful wines while looking out at the gorgeous surrounding grounds. I also relished the full kitchen and a bathroom with soaking tub Soaking tubs are another of my indulgences and this one came with comforts like bath bombs and fragrant soaps and lotions. With every single amenity, (click here to view more photos) I enjoyed a relaxing and indulgent two days of the best Inn By The Sea has to offer. This luxury hotel is recognized for green hotel practices, which makes it a wonderfully responsible and perfect place to spend any special occasion or family vacation. Only a short distance from downtown Portland, the hotel is perfectly located making it easy to feel like you’ve traveled to a far off luxurious destination. It’s close enough so visitors can explore and enjoy activities and restaurants throughout Portland. I found no reason to leave the hotel grounds. The Spa I love spas. In fact they are one of my favorite services to experience. I’ve visited many spas all over the world and tried an array of treatments. Our Portland Spa is dedicated to ensuring its guests experience the best indulgences. I enjoyed the Sea Waves 60-minute treatment and was whisked away on a magical, luxurious, relaxing journey of pure bliss. My masseur was extremely knowledgeable and recommended oils that worked wonderfully with my treatment. Before and after, I enjoyed a beautiful sanctuary with my own locker and luxuriously soft robe, and sandals. I also had access to private steam rooms, a wonderful 5 head shower experience, beverages and snacks that were perfect before and after my treatment. A visit to Inn By The Sea is not complete without a visit to their amazing spa. The Restaurant Eating at the onsite restaurant, Sea Glass is a gastronomical affair like none other. The chef creates magic with fresh, locally sourced food for every
37
palate and every food consideration. In addition to his amazing creations, Chef Andrew offers new and innovative vegan specialties that even this carnivore absolutely loved! Each meal at the hotel was an indulgence and I felt like royalty. From the blueberry butter that accompanied the freshly baked breads to the Local Lobster Toast at breakfast, to the Spring Pea & Burrata every bite was a unique and delicious experience. At the end of the day a wonderful experience at any hotel whether a luxury facility or a hostel is determined by how welcoming a guest feels and how the staff interacts with them. Inn By The Sea gets it right on all aspects. Although I was there for a sponsorship, I also witnessed the attention and care the staff gave other visitors. It was no less special than my own. Each person was greeted and treated with kindness, genuine care of their comfort and experience, and with a friendly and warm smile and attitude. I can’t recommend Inn By The Sea enough. Portland Harbor Hotel - A City Retreat My next stop would find me in the heart of the Old Port District. Surrounded by a vibrant foodie and music scene, Portland Harbor Hotel offers the best for its guests. The rooms have been renovated and are beautifully decorated and spacious. Each includes a variety of amenities and what you don’t find in the room can be delivered to you in seconds.
38
I checked in early, as I like to do, to allow me to explore the facility. My warm and cozy room had accents of Maine’s costal life. The luxuriously comfortable linens make it hard to want to leave. Again, I enjoyed a wonderful bathroom with a soaking tub, gorgeous marble counter tops, spacious shower, soaps, shampoos, and lotions that were plentiful. There is a quaint workspace that is perfect for someone like me who has to work a little during my visits. The staff was more than welcoming and helpful in so many ways. One of the amenities that surprised me was the free car service the hotel offers to its guests. I used it quite often since I was not familiar with the area. The drivers were helpful, kind, and easy to talk to. It’s very nice to have a service like this for guests who have appointments or need a ride somewhere they are not familiar with. The Restaurant Oh what a treat I experienced at Blue Fin! I have eaten in many restaurants around the world. I’ve had amazing experiences, met amazing chefs, and indulged in some of the world’s most amazing meals. But my experience with Chef Gil Plaster is, hands down, one of the best experiences I’ve had to date. I can honestly say that he is a genius. His passion for his craft is not just palpable, but contagious. After meeting him and listening to his background and how he pursued his career, I knew that I was going to experience a gastronomical delight. But what I thought was going to be incredible turned out to be almost unbelievable. Chef Plaster decided he would cook for me pesonally. Each dish was preceded by a description of what he was going to prepare, where the inspiration for it came from and how he had put his own special spin on it. I don’t know how chef did it but everything he told me I would be tasting, in the order in which he said I would taste it, was exactly as he detailed. He explained that everything he used was locally
WWW.THEHOTELGUIDE.COM
sourced. He was very proud of the fact that he was instrumental in introducing Southeast Asian spices with a mix of Latin flavors into the seafood central of Maine. I have never tasted such amazing dishes… ever! I was honored to be one of the people who get to experience chef Gil’s genius and would tell any foodie to go to Portland just to eat at one of his tables. The rest of the staff and facility is equally amazing at what they do and their genuine care and consideration for their guests is evident in the various events and extra attention they take each day. From outside fire pits to enjoy wine and snacks in their courtyard, to a full bar where you can enjoy a variety of cocktails in front of the fireplace. Every aspect of the hotel is designed for comfort and luxury. My last few days found me at Captain Lord Manor Located in Kennebunkport a 25-minute drive from Portland, Captain Lord Manor is an oasis for those who want to get away from city life. This amazing bed and breakfast is known a Maine’s Top Rated Kennebunkport Inn and after my stay, I completely understand why. Owned and operated by Rick Litchfield and Bev Davis, this amazingly warm and intimate manor offers the best of modern amenities while still staying true to the old world beauty of the area. Each room holds a special design and comfort with amenities not usually found in most manors. My suite was called The Regulator. It was uber luxurious and a perfect place to relax after a day of exploring Kennebunkport. As you can probably guess by now, a soaking tub is something that I love to experience. The one at Captain Lord Manor is out of this world! Beautifully deep, and set in a wonderfully comfortable and luxurious setting, the tub in my suite was one I didn’t want to leave. During my three-day stay, I enjoyed 4 wonderfully relaxing soaks in the tub and had to force myself to get out! I also enjoyed the fact that the seating area I the main part of the house is set up to encourage

guests to turn off their phones, put down the social media interaction and talk to each other. The comfortable couches and relaxing atmosphere make for great conversation. There is always nice music playing and there is always someone around to chat with. Breakfast Each morning breakfast is served with the ringing of a bell. The night before the staff posts what will be served and the times breakfast will be available. Most days, there are two different times to indulge in the full, home cooked breakfast. One for early risers and one for those who like to lie around and enjoy their room a bit more.

I sat back and enjoyed some of the best seafood Maine has to offer. I started with a house special; charred Brussels sprouts with blue cheese, pecans, and scallions. It was a wonderful rendition of a common veggie and was amazing. Next came flavorful crab cakes that were sweet and clearly extremely fresh. That was followed up with sea scallops that couldn’t be but a few hours old. They were perfectly seared and served. I couldn’t leave without trying the lobster mac & cheese.
