HOTEL LAURANCE LAURANCE HOTEL
Laurance, LuH otel ray’s distinctive
boutique hotel, attracts visitors from around the country and the world when they visit Virginia’s beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Since the property first opened, it has been featured in multiple national publications, including Southern Living magazine. The hotel has become well known for its “Keeping Room” library and the uniqueness of its history and design. Then and Now... Hotel Laurance was originally founded in 1883 when the proprietor, Joseph Parkinson, named the hotel after his wife, Laura. Today Hotel Laurance proudly honors its historic roots with original exposed brick accents, carefully curated artifacts, and of course, its namesake. The hotel is now a newly renovated boutique hotel with 12 luxury guest suites and chic décor which tastefully showcase the “historic grace meets modern elegance” aesthetic of the property. With no two rooms alike, each has its own unique personality and design, providing guests with a new experience with each visit. The suites are designed with a “home away from home” feel in mind as most of the rooms feature full kitchens, sitting areas, and bedrooms. Each room has a private bath and amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi and smart TVs. Hotel Laurance also features two stunning event spaces which are perfect for intimate weddings, rehearsal dinners, milestone birthdays and anniversaries, and retreats.
Award-Winning Boutique Hotel Since its opening, Hotel Laurance has been featured in Washingtonian magazine, forbes.com, Southern Living magazine, and Conde Nast Traveler. Washingtonian listed Hotel Laurance as one of the best places to stay in the Shenandoah Valley and praised the hotel for its décor which “sport subway tiles, hardwood plank floors, distressed furniture, and designer details such as busts and golden sconces that hark back to its origins.” Forbes.com recommends Hotel Laurance as the only place to stay when visiting the world-famous Luray Caverns. Hotel Laurance introduced the increasingly popular boutique hotel market into the area and continues to boost tourism to the area with an increase of travelers from outside of Virginia and from outside of the country thanks to its coverage in the media. The uniqueness of the property and its exquisite interior design have redefined the standard of lodging in the area. Hotel Laurance aims to be the premier destination for visitors to the Shenandoah Valley for years to come. Visit: www.HotelLaurance.com.

TRAVEL WORKOUTS
no excuses guide to getting it done by: Sara Quiriconi eel like you have a hard time getting in a workout when you’re traveling? Sure, we’re out of our regular routine that we would have being at home. However, for my frequent travelers out there: Get my drift? As a Travel Wellness Agent and personal planner for frequent business travelers, we work together to develop a foolproof plan suggesting where to workout, what to do for exercises, healthy food options, and scheduling in an extra hour before a flight to get some well-being time in. One of the best ways to ensure you get that workout and not and not blame [INSERT EXCUSE HERE] and to wear your fitness attire when you fly. There are quite a few benefits to wearing travel athleisure over your typical work attire, including: - greater circulation, which is incredibly important for heart health, and an issue for airplane travel - easier to maneuver on the plane (have you ever had to put your carry-on in the overhead bin wearing a skirt and heels?)you’ll be ready to go for a workout precisely once you land, even if you’re too early for check-in, you can gain access to the gym facilities and don’t need to change comfort wins Now, you can be comfortable and stylish! On a recent trip to Chicago to speak at a business travel conference on Personal Well-being and frequent travel resilience, I went prepared. Damn right, I walked my walk. The first place I went once I landed? The yoga room in Chicago O’Hare Airport, and then to the gym for some weights and cardio
F
at the hotel. In order to do so, I’ve got to dress Fit to Fly! I’ve partnered with adidas to share 5 of my top picks for travel atheisure that will take you from your flight to your fitness center, excuse-free. Here’s what I’m packing: 1. WEAR YOUR SNEAKERS, PACK YOUR WORK SHOES The Deets: You’ll want a breathable run or cross-training sneaker that is sleek and stylish. Steer away from the bright, obnoxious colors and opt for mono-tones or neutrals for the business readers in the crowd. You’ll want a sneaker with good foot bedding to use for both working out and comfort in the airport and flight that has the ability to tie or slip on and off fairly easily. On that note, pack and extra pair of socks to have for after your workout. Or, just in case you sweat in flight, it’s always good to have an extra set on hand (ahem, foot). 2. PACK A SPILL-PROOF WATER BOTTLE The Deets: For each hour you’re in flight, you loose 8 ounces of
WWW.THEHOTELGUIDE.COM
25
water. Bringing a water bottle with you, you’ll want this for both on the plane and in the gym. Many airports have refillable water bottle stations throughout the terminals these days, so you don’t need to go the plastic bottle route. When you get to the gym, double up on the hydro servings — your body’s already dehydrated from the plane, and sweating can do the same, if you’re not replacing fluids first. 3. LAYERS, LAYERS, AND MORE LAYERS The Deets: There’s a quote: “Life is like an onion: you peel off one layer at a time.” Well, when you travel, dress like an onion and prepare for whatever climate and life can throw at you. As mentioned above, temperatures can fluctuate on a plane, and also from one’s departure origin to another’s arrival destination. Wearing layers can give you options, and it’s saves space in your carry-on. I’m a huge zip-up hoodie fan, because you cover your head and eyes to protect from any germs in flight, or when you want to sleep. With a zipper, you can easily slip it on and off as you need with the varying degrees without having to pull something awkwardly over your head, possibly knocking your neighbor in the shoulder during the process. When you think of hoodies, get the notion that your college varsity sweatshirt is what we have in mind. Think style. 4. BRING A TOWEL THAT DOUBLES AS A BLANKET The Deets: Air temperatures on planes can shift varying degrees, depending on the plane, location and cabin crew. Typically,
they veer on the cold to freezing side of the spectrum, and there’s never a guarantee (even on overnight flights) that you’ll be reserved a blanket to keep covered. Best to bring your own, and one that can double as a workout towel after. 5. PACK IT ALL IN A BACKPACK The Deets: Personally, I’m a huge backpack fan for travel, for a few reasons. They typically have great storage with multiple pockets to easily organize your work, fitness, and healthy snack (you’re bringing healthy snacks, right, warriors!?) all in one place. Plus, the dual straps of a backpack are far healthier for your spine to carry than a single sling bag over one shoulder. Last but not least, plan ahead by scoping out where you’re going to workout by searching airport gyms, nearby airport hotel gyms you can get access to, or if the hotel you’re staying at has a gym you can use. Or, have a workout ready to go that you can do that doesn’t require any equipment, such as Yoga For Travel or 10 Min Traveler Fitness Workout. Visit: www.saraquiriconi.com.

self-care when traveling elf-caring while traveling can be difficult as we are ripped from everything in our comfy, predictable bubbles and placed in a new environment full of potential and new experiences! Although all this “newness” can be invigorating, we cannot take for granted our need to for self-care and the soothing comforts of home. As we take flight into the magical bliss of vacation and travel, finding ways to ground ourselves and practice mindfulness can be a great act of self care. A Piece of Home This may seem silly but bringing a small piece of home that is part of your daily ritual can be incredibly grounding and soothing to your psyche as you venture into the unknown. This may be a pillow case, your favorite face towel, photograph, or a meaningful item given to you by a loved one. This grounding object may bring great comfort and solace if a moment of home-sickness or disconnect arises. Try Something New Seemingly the antithesis of the previous tip: pushing yourself to try something new can bring about a surge of empowerment, self-esteem, and meaning to your trip. This may mean trying a new food, going on a thrilling excursion, or simply striking up a meaningful conversation with a stranger. Pushing past feelings of fear or discomfort or striking an item off our proverbial bucket list may allow us to return home with a new sense of accomplishment and self worth. Ritual Retention Sometimes we get in a funk when we travel because we
S
lose our cathartic rituals that usually take up vital space in our daily lives. Practicing mindfulness around continuing these rituals can allow us to nourish our minds and bodies and maintain a felt safety in our new location. If you wake up every morning and do the same stretches, do them in your hotel room too! If you wind down at night with your favorite decaf tea, make sure you pack a few in your luggage so you can feel connected to your grounding rituals no matter when you lay your head that evening. Create Your Own Adventure You know the familiar shelves of vibrant activity pamphlets that scream at you in the Hotel Lobby? Sure these are packed with fun tourist-y things to do but you can also create your OWN ADVENTURE. Look up the most beautiful park and have a tea party. Bring a great novel to a nearby rooftop lounge. Find a way to combine the local scenery with something you already love to do. This can be a great way to combine new exciting experiences with old comforting ones. Ultimately, practicing mindful self-care while traveling comes down to planning, implementation, and self reflection. If we remain cognizant of our own needs: (physical, mental, emotional) as we trek to new thrilling settings, we remain grounded in who we are and obtain a newfound ability to truly benefit from these experiences. ROOIBERG LODGE
a south african retreat by: Shondalea and Larissa, girlfriendjustgo.com
O
ff the beaten path destinations have suddenly become more in demand and that “bucket list” just became more luxe. Now is the time to really live life as if tomorrow…well, who even knows anything about tomorrow? And if you, like most, are searching for a safe, secluded escape from the madness of the past year, consider the Rooiberg Lodge in South Africa. www.rooiberglodge.co.za I could start by saying South Africa is rich in culture…. blah, blah, blah. Doesn’t everyone claim that? Don’t get me wrong, South Africa, like many beautiful countries, is definitely rich in culture. Now look into the Rand against the Dollar and your Caribbean vacation just got way more EXPENSIVE in comparison! Nestled in the heart of the Klein Karoo, against the backdrop of the beautiful Rooiberg mountain, lies The Rooiberg Lodge. Offering magnificent views and spectacular sunsets, not to mention the abundance of fauna and flora, this lodge is any nature loving globe trotter’s dream! Checking all the boxes, it has become our go to place when visiting South Africa, a true hidden gem. Upon arrival we were greeted in the parking lot just out front, and offered a sherry as our bags were taken to our room, (They came outside-when did you last experience that?) I thought the staff may have confused one of us as a celebrity. The treatment remained the same throughout our visit and it was later explained to me that visitors to the area are only visitors until they arrive, then they become family. The lodge is great for outdoor activities such as moun-
tain biking, hiking and short nature walks. We hiked the Fountain Trail, home to some of the cleanest water on earth and filtered by surrounding plants, it has a sweet taste (think lavender and mint) and is the main drinking water for the lodge. The trail has beautiful vistas and overhangs and is home to a family of baboons, evident as you climb higher. The lovely wafting smell of baboon urine really reminds you that you are in South Africa and the views will completely blow you away. With no shortage of outdoor ventures, you can spend the day meandering through lush vegetation, or just sit and watch the animals drink form the watering hole near your room. If you need some excitement or just want to explore the area, jump on a game drive. Daniel has a fierce knowledge of the fauna and flora (that is if you can tear yourself away from his piercing blue eyes) and although you will not see the “big 5” you will see giraffe, Zebra, Baboons, and several species of antelope. Did I mention Daniel’s piercing blue eyes?
The property borders the Mont Rouge olive grove, home to award winning olive oil. Take the trail around the grove for a nice serene walk but don’t miss a tour of the state-of-the-art processing plant and sample the bounty. Remember to book your olive tour well in advance. The olive caviar is simply amazing. With several accommodations to choose from this lodge can satisfy a range of budgets. From a beautiful campground (next to the watering hole) and a large dorm style building exclusively for backpackers, to chalets and even luxurious suites. It seems small at first glance but don’t be fooled. This lodge has it all and is much larger than it looks. With a conference room and large boma it will accommodate meetings, weddings and the like. If you are looking for a little more luxe, check out the Manor House. It combines modern style suites, large living areas with ample room for friend and family. One offers a private pool and large outdoor grill for braais. (A lovely thing in South Africa) Perfect for getaways with a few friends or perhaps even a romantic stay, this place nails it. Having chosen a two-bedroom chalet, which included a fireplace and all the comforts of home, we were located near the watering hole. Great for animal viewing but also very clean and comfortable, however, I can’t say enough about the mattress on the bed…Sleep OWNED. We put in long hours on our trip and getting out of bed in the morning became a challenge. Cool, crisp evenings spent next to the fireplace with a bottle of wine became the perfect place to share some serious girlfriend laughter. A few of the locals occasionally stopped by to greet us on their way to drink. (Kudu, Giraffe, Zebra, etc.) The resort is very quiet and aside from the occasional call from the Zebra we heard very little. Stargazing should be high on your agenda when in this area as the milky way serves as a reminder that you are far from the city lights. It is truly magical. The food in South Africa is second to none and Rooiberg has nailed it when it comes to first class dining. I
37
ordered the Springbok Carpaccio as if I knew what I was ordering. I was surprised to learn it was well, carpaccio… (new to me) I nearly cried but decided to try it anyway. Turns out it was the best thing I ever dared to venture into but then again, every dish we tried was delish! Let’s just say they KNOW their spices and exactly how to use them. Although I’ve heard stories about the dishes in South Africa, I can assure you we never even saw a menu with questionable items. Some other options included stuffed chicken breast and even rack of lamb as well as vegetarian dishes. The restaurant, decorated in a modern upscale Safari theme, has a nice warm vibe and you can choose to dine inside or out. The views from the deck overlooking the pool and watering hole are perfect for watching the sunset. Grab a drink from the well-stocked bar and relax but keep an eye out for giraffe, zebra, and other locals. If you are up for an adventure, Ruan will open your mind to gin. Just sit back and relax, you are in for a real treat, take it from me you HAVE to book your gin tasting experience. We really enjoyed sipping “sundowners” in the area next to the huge fireplace. Nothing beats the smell of a campfire on a chilly autumn night. Wifi is available in the Manor Suites as well as the restaurant area if you HAVE to connect to the outside world. Do yourself a favor and indulge in some well-earned down time and reconnect to nature, yourself, or family and friends. This Lodge combines serenity and solitude with some of the most tranquil spots on earth. Just being here was like body butter for the mind and soul and after the last year, it felt completely indulgent. They even offer mediations so do yourself a favor and stop by to meet Rudi. She is amazing! From management to housekeeping and kitchen staff, you will be hard pressed to find a more accommodating staff anywhere. The perfect place to escape and unwind with friends or even alone, it is one of South Africa’s best kept secrets and the perfect place to reconnect, recover and reignite life.

CRUISING SURVEY
strong return for the cruising industry expected ruiseline.com and Shipmate have announced the results of a Return to Cruising Survey to coincide with the nearly one-year mark of the suspension of cruising in the United States. These survey questions were designed to cover frequent topics of interest within the Cruiseline. com and Shipmate communities, as well as gather consumer insights on new protocols being incorporated around the cruise industry to ensure passenger health and safety. Survey results included 11,000 traveler respondents. 26% of participants reported being over Age 65, 54% between Ages 46 - 65, and 20% are 45 and under. Overwhelmingly 72% reported that they do not travel with children under the age of 18. 11% reported that they do travel with children under 18, and 17% say it depends on the cruise. The main focus of this survey was to gauge travelers’ confidence in cruising once again. As a whole, 93% of participants responded that they would consider cruising in 2021 or 2022 when operations resume. Of this number, 66% specifically reported they would cruise again as soon as 2021 and 27% reported that they would cruise in 2022. 1% reported that
C
they would not cruise in 2021 or 2022, and 6% reported that they were unsure if they planned on cruising during this time period. “By a large majority, our survey participants said that they are ready to get back on a cruise ship as soon as possible this year. This shows that there is a tremendous demand out there to cruise again after one year of not sailing, and travelers are feeling confident in the new health measures being implemented by the cruise lines,” said Jamie Cash, General Manager of Cruiseline.com and Shipmate. As of now, no formal statements have been made from the CDC or other official organizations regarding vaccine requirements by cruise lines. This topic has been highly speculated and discussed within the Cruiseline.com and Shipmate communities. Of those that responded they would cruise in 2021 or 2022, 72% reported they would cruise if a vaccine is required, 17% would not cruise if a vaccine is required, and 11% reported they are unsure. Many new health and safety guidelines introduced from cruise lines have indicated that masks will be mandatory on cruise ships, spe-

cifically when social distancing is not doable. On February 2, 2021, the CDC issued an order which will require the wearing of face masks by all travelers into, within, or out of the United States which includes wearing face coverings on ships and traveling through cruise ports. In the Return to Cruising Survey of respondents who reported they would cruise in 2021 or 2022, 56% reported they would travel if masks are required, 22% reported they would not cruise if masks will be required, 22% reported they were unsure. From these questions regarding new health protocols, we can conclude from our community response that cruisers are slightly more willing to cruise if a vaccine is required whereas they are a bit less likely to consider cruising if a mask will be required to be worn while onboard. The next part of the Cruiseline.com survey concerned specifics from those who will cruise in 2021 or 2022

regarding their travel preferences. The top three lines that respondents reported they would consider sailing first of all cruise lines were: Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line. Respondents were also asked which regions around the world they would consider cruising to once that particular region is open. 87.9% of individuals reported they would cruise the Caribbean, with Alaska and the Canada/New England regions coming in second and third. The conclusion of the Return to Sailing Survey questioned respondent’s booking preferences. Of those that would cruise in 2021 or 2022, 61% reported ship size nor passenger capacity would be a deciding factor when booking their next cruise, 28% reported ship size and/or passenger capacity will be a determining factor in selecting a cruise, and 11% reported they are unsure at this time.
