Watermark Hotel & Spa

A True

River Walk Oasis

I

magine being pampered like you can only dream of. At the Watermark Hotel and Spa, that is just business as usual. Situated on the inviting and world-famous San Antonio River Walk, the Watermark beckons visitors to bask in the lap of luxury. History Lesson... An adaptive re-creation of the façade of the 19th century L. Frank Saddlery Building, which originally occupied the site, the Hotel features 98 luxurious guest rooms and suites ranging from 425 to 600square feet, each featuring soaring 12-foot ceilings, expansive windows, marble baths, separate shower/ tub enclosures, Jacuzzi baths and stylish steel four poster beds. Historic photographs, hand-cut metal artifacts, specially commissioned artworks by renowned Texas and California artists, along with custom-made furnishings decorate the hotel. High ceilings and large windows allow in natural light during the day and the twinkling lights of the River Walk in the evening. The stylish four poster beds dressed with Egyptian cotton sheets are made even more romantic by diaphanous drapery behind the upholstered headboard that give the room a cozy atmosphere. The attention to detail is superb and shows in the ample leathertopped desk that is perfect for in-room dining or as a work surface, and the deep club chairs paired with a suede ottoman. Award-Winning Spa A luxurious, 17,000square-foot, European-style Mobil Four Star spa encompasses the second floor of the Watermark. Nineteen sumptuous treatment rooms, four spa suites, his and her changing areas, serene relaxation lounges, Vichy shower, hydrotherapy tubs and a full-service hair and nail salon are just a sampling of the services. Private label products, using ingredients indigenous to Texas and San Antonio, include shampoo, conditioner, bath soaps and body treatments. 6

Spa services, for both men and women, include facials, massages, aromatherapy, reflexology, shiatsu, body wraps, manicures, pedicures and a range of spa therapy that leave one refreshed and relaxed. Dining Options Pesca on the River® is a high-energy restaurant featuring the freshest seafood flown in daily from around the world. Caliente Harley-Davidson Enjoying a Sizzling Summer

by: Rudy Arispe

S

ince opening its doors in 2006, Caliente Harley-Davidson has been doing steady business by supplying the hottest bikes to Harley lovers as San Antonio’s premier Harley dealership. Caliente Harley-Davidson is a 40,000-square-foot facility that offers the latest Harley models along with clothes and accessories. It features a 15,000-square-foot showroom, customer lounge with free Internet, classrooms for training courses and on-site rentals. Managing Partner Fred Bosshardt took time out to talk about the dealership’s support of the upcoming Muscular Dystrophy Association Black and Blue gala and the hottest deals this summer. What separates Caliente from other Harley dealerships: As San Antonio’s premier Harley dealership, it’s important to us to provide significant value to customers in these tough economic times. We are able to provide this through the quality of staff and the facility we have, as well as our products and services. We’re proud to be San Antonio’s only locallyowned Harley dealership, and we are a drug-free workplace. Tell me about the 2nd annual MDA Black and Blue gala: The purpose of the gala is to raise funds for research on neuromuscular diseases that affect more than one million Americans. Last year, we raised $20,000. We’re still working out details, but this year’s event will be sometime in November. Ruben V is on board to provide entertainment. You can check www.calienteharley.com for updates. 8

Why does Caliente support local charities: My wife, (coowner) Paige, and business partner, Bob Beadle, and I believe in supporting the community. We’re very fortunate that we have a strong, loyal customer base, and it’s important to give back to those in need. What’s hot this summer for Harley fans: Harley has some great models for 2009, and the 2010 models will be coming out soon. The hot thing right now is the great deals on the current year models. The engineering design changes they did for 2009 are outstanding. This along with the updated style points really make for a great bike. How do you keep cool in this blistering Texas heat: I drink a lot of liquids, and when I get on my bike I try to ride during hours when it’s not so hot. But it’s always cool when you’re on a Harley. www.thehotelguide.com

E

Corpus Christi A Shore Thing....

very city has its own individual characteristics that make it stand out from every other city out there. New York has the Empire State Building. Los Angeles has the Hollywood sign. Chicago is known for the brisk winds that blow in off Lake Michigan and Austin touts itself as the “Live Music Capital of Texas.” So what is it that makes Corpus Christi so special? What can you find here that you can’t find anywhere else, or, at least, that you can’t find in most other cities you visit? What’s in a Name? You can start with the name, for one. You’ll find only one city on the entire planet that goes by the name Corpus Christi, which is Latin for “Body of Christ.” The name comes from the bay of the same name, which is said to have been discovered by Alonzo Álvarez de Piñeda on the Roman Catholic feast day of Corpus Christi. Aquatics and more... The Texas State Aquarium is another uniquely Corpus Christi experience. The official aquarium of Texas is one of the top 10 aquariums in the nation and specializes in chronicling the biodiversity of the Gulf of Mexico. The Texas State Aquarium is dedicated to the study of flora and fauna of the Gulf of Mexico and adjacent coastline. It features a 132,000gallon aquarium with a reproduction of an offshore oil rig, a smaller, more colorful aquarium with a reproduction of a coral reef and numerous other tanks and exhibits featuring sea turtles, Texas river otters and birds of prey. Corpus Christi Beach is also home to another popular Texas tourist attraction. The USS Lexington, a World War II-era decommissioned aircraft carrier, is moored just off the beach a short walk north of the aquarium. A concrete ramp leads visitors up to the hangar deck, where they begin their tour of one of the most decorated aircraft carriers in U.S. Navy history. Several air-conditioned, self-guided tours lead visitors through the captain’s quarters, admiral’s quarters, navigation and flag bridge, sick bay and engine room. A large-screen movie theatre, gift shop, food court and flight simulator add to the enjoyment. But the main draw is the flight deck, where vintage aircraft from the 14

World War II era and onward stand on static display. Ocean Drive... The city’s Ocean Drive offers a driving experience not enjoyed by most cities. This popular avenue runs along Corpus Christi Bay and features several fine homes. The city’s favorite park – Cole Park – is located on Ocean Drive overlooking the bay. KidsPlace is a huge wooden play area in the park with stairs, ramps, ladders and lots of cool tunnels. The opportunity to commune with nature is among the main reasons people visit Corpus Christi. The endangered whooping cranes spend their winters at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge north of Corpus Christi, and each summer scads www.thehotelguide.com

TEXAS of endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle hatchlings are released into the wild. While on your nature jaunt, you don’t want to miss the South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center which has become one of the region’s top nature tourism destinations showcasing colorful, exotic floral exhibits blended with vast conserved areas of native habitat and natural wetlands. The 180-acre site is an integral part of the city’s growing Oso Creek Greenbelt system and is a part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Water Sports... Corpus Christi is a perfect setting for water sports enthusiasts. Not only is the area teeming with water, it’s also one of the windiest spots in the nation, which means sailors, windsurfers and kitesurfers will never find themselves longing for a good breeze. Water sports include sailing, surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, scuba diving, riding personal watercraft, motor-boating, parasailing and paddleboating. Sailing has long been a popular sport in the Corpus Christi area. The Corpus Christi marina is evidence of that, with boats packing the slips and the bayfront dotted with billowing white sails many evenings and almost every weekend. Windsurfing... Corpus Christi has been home to one of the top windsurfing competitions in the world for several years. Kitesurfing and other extreme sports have been added in recent years. The four-day event now includes skateboarding and bicycle stunt performances at the annual Velocity Games/U.S. Open Windsurfing & Kiteboarding Championships. www.thehotelguide.com

One of the best spots in the world to windsurf can be found at Bird Island Basin at Padre Island National Seashore. The water is shallow and the winds steady at this popular spot, which attracts people from all over the world. Surfing, too... Surfing is popular along the Texas coast as well. Surfers can be found near the piers and jetties on Padre and Mustang islands. Popular spots include the beaches of Port Aransas, J.P. Luby Surf Park and Bob Hall Pier in the Corpus Christi section of Padre Island. Kayaking Kayaking has become a popular water sport in recent years. Kayaks are for sale or rent at spots all along the Texas coast, including Corpus Christi, Port Aransas and Rockport. Kayaking guide services will rent you a kayak and take you to popular kayaking spots for exploring and fishing and will pick you up when you’re done. Personal watercraft are available for rent at city marinas, beaches and roadways along area waterways. Scuba diving in Corpus Christi will take you to offshore oil and gas platforms, or to destinations outside the area. Finally, the kids will enjoy renting a paddleboat and cruising around the sheltered waters of the marina. Take Me Out to the Ballpark The Corpus Christi Hooks, owned in part by Hall-of-Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, are the Double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. The field is within the shadow of the Harbor Bridge and overlooks the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, where barges and tankers provide a monumental backdrop to the games. Contact Us... L’Auberge du Lac A Louisiana Masterpiece

article by: Dale Blasingame

hat do you get when you mix Las Vegas with the Texas Hill Country? Sounds strange, but it’s the best way to describe L’auberge du Lac Casino Resort - an oasis in the Louisiana outback. Incredible Scenery L’auberge du Lac is just a few miles off of I-10 in Lake Charles. The hotel was inspired by the Hill Country - one of the most gorgeous areas in the entire country - and it shows. As soon as you walk inside, you can’t help but notice the dark woods, natural stones and fireplaces in the lobby. One of the most interesting things about L’auberge du Lac is, like the mega-resorts in Las Vegas, everything you need to relax or have fun is all located on one property. Plenty of Rooms First, let’s start with the hotel rooms. There are more than 1,000 of them at L’auberge du Lac. The standard rooms have that Las Vegas elegance - easily comparable with the best hotels on the Strip. There are also three different types of suites here. They feature hardwood ceilings - a truly unique feature that will cause you stop and stare for a few minutes. The best part of it all, the rooms have breathtaking views of either the pool or golf course. Outdoor Recreation Speaking of pools, you’ve probably heard about the pools at Hard Rock or Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas - and this one at L’auberge du Lac ranks right up there. It has everything you need to relax: two huge, swim-

W

ming areas (including an adults area), a lazy river with inner tubes to float, a swim-up bar and private cabanas. You can also grab lunch at Nevie Beach Club. One piece of advice: be there for a Thursday during the summer so you can witness the Party by the Pool. It’s just you and a couple thousand of your closest friends, with some great music by national acts like Everclear and

Blue October. Golf Anyone? L’auberge du Lac also has its own 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Tom Fazio. You really get the experience of the Louisiana environment at the Contraband Bayou Golf Club because it’s built right into the course. If battling the lakes and marshes is too much for you, there’s also a driving range to practice on your game. Shopping and Spas If golf’s not your thing, how about some shopping? L’auberge du Lac has its own area of shops where you can buy everything from jewelry to clothes to lingerie. After that, you can head over to the spa and get a massage. A day at the pool, golf course or shops can build up quite an appetite. Luckily, L’auberge du Lac has several restaurants to keep you well fed. The lineup is highlighted by Snake River Grill - the steakhouse that made its name in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. L’auberge du Lac features the only www.thehotelguide.com

Snake River Grill

article by: Dale Blasingame

’m starting to get pretty spoiled. I’ve had the chance to eat at some of the top steakhouses in the world recently. Now I can add Snake River Grill to that list. There are only two Snake River Grills in the entire country. The original is in Jackson Hole, Wyoming - one of the most gorgeous skiing spots you‘ll ever see. The only other location is inside L’Auberge du Lac Hotel and Casino in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Incredible Ambiance As soon as walk in, you instantly feel like you’re in some type of exclusive ski lodge - a hard feat to pull off in southwest Louisiana. There are dark woods everywhere, a fireplace, natural stones. It really sets the mood for a fantastic dining experience. Delectable Dining The menu has something for everyone and they‘ve catered it to bring in the local flavor. Start with an appetizer. They have everything from onion rings battered in Shiner Bock beer to Louisiana crab cakes. But this is a steakhouse - so they also have delicious prime sirloin

steak tacos and lamb chop lollipops. From there, it’s on to the main course. I had the 14- ounce New York strip and a baked potato. It definitely hit the spot. The steak was so tender and juicy. It practically melted in my mouth. It really was a perfect piece of meat. The menu is also full of other steaks - filet mignon, porterhouse, ribeye and even Kobe strip loins. Picking a cut of meat (and the sauce to accompany it) may be the toughest decision you make here. If steak isn’t your thing, don’t worry. Snake River Grill has an extensive list of fish, Maine lobster and chicken to choose from. One tip - if you’re by yourself, avoid the wait and try to sit at the bar. They offer a full menu there and you can usually grab a spot immediately. Spoil Yourself So go ahead and spoil yourself. Take a break from the gambling and the shopping and the golf to enjoy Snake River Grill. 27

A Myriad of Things to Do

Lake Charles, LA.

article by: Dale Blasingame

When was the last time you’ve been to Lake Charles, Louisiana? Chances are - it’s now a totally different city. Perfect Roadtrip Lake Charles is a perfect road trip distance for most people in Texas. It’s two and a half hours from Houston and a five-hour drive from San Antonio or Dallas. But did you know you can now fly to Lake Charles? Continental offers service from Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston and you can also catch non-stop flights to and from Dallas on American Airlines. That service just started earlier this summer. Very convenient. Gambling Anyone? The first thing that comes to mind when you hear “Lake Charles” is probably gambling - and with good reason. It’s home to several casinos, including the spectacular L’Auberge du Lac and the Isle of Capri. There are even more casinos, including Coushatta, just down the road. Lake Charles is actually the closest casino destination for two of the country’s seven biggest cities, Houston and San Antonio. You can find everything you need there to get your gambling fix - slots, blackjack, poker and buffets. Creole Nature Trail There’s more to Lake Charles than the casinos. How about enjoying Mother Nature? Lake Charles is part of the Creole Nature Trail - 180 miles of bayous, marshland and shoreline in southwest Louisiana. This area is actually known as an All-American Road, the highest designation from the US Department of Transportation.

You can see alligators and hundreds of birds in their natural habitats in the Louisiana Outbreak. There’s also several areas for great fishing and hunting. Beaches, too Don’t forget about the beaches. Lake Charles has the only white sand inland beach on the entire Gulf Coast. There’s also a boardwalk that connects the beach to several of the city’s parks. There are even more beaches a short drive down to the coast. Mardi Gras It’s hard to not think about Mardi Gras when you go to Louisiana. That’s the case in Lake Charles - which has the largest display of Mardi Gras costumes in the entire world at its Mardi Gras Museum. You can learn all about the celebration, King Cakes and even see what it’s like to get on a Mardi Gras float. Golfing And if that’s not enough, Lake Charles has some great golf courses. In fact, there are six of them there - all with their own unique challenges and scenery. So, when’s the next time you’re going to Lake Charles? Better make a vacation out of it. There’s a lot to see. Budget Travel in Sin City

Las Vegas

or those looking to make the most of their travel budget while visiting the “Entertainment Capital of the World,” there are several options for the value-conscious visitor. Here are just a few: Free attractions line the Las Vegas Strip and they’re not hard to find. The Mirage’s volcano erupts in a lagoon filled with waterfalls and palm trees every 15 minutes from dusk to midnight. The Mirage has joined forces with legendary Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, Indian music sensation Zakir Hussein, and the Fountains of Bellagio design firm WET to create an all-new audio/visual spectacle for its famous volcano attration. WET forges a primal volcanic environment of sound, light, music and heat with choreographed FireShooters, which send massive fireballs more than 12 feet into the air. The volcano attraction features a state-of-the-art sound system with music and sound specially created by Hart and Hussein. Next door, nightly passersby can catch the “Sirens of TI” at Treasure Island. The revamped version showcases the popular pyrotechnic war as male renegade pirates battle “sexy sirens” of Sirens’ Cove. Performances run every 90 minutes beginning at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, the world-famous Fountains at Bellagio thrill visitors with more than 1,000 water-emitting devices choreographed to music by artists such as Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Whitney Houston and Andrea Bocelli. At The Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, the newly reinvented “Show in the Sky” features dancers in costume fashions on floats suspended above the crowd. Three different performances include sexy and seductive “scenes” coordinated to today’s top music hits. Downtown’s famous, casino-lined street is now the Fremont Street Experience, a 175,700-square-foot pedestrian area covered by a continuous canopy studded with more than 14 million lights. Each evening on the hour, this canopy comes alive with spectacular light-and-sound shows. From Las Vegas Hilton to Luxor to JW Marriott, most major resorts offer free lounge entertainment that is

available practically around the clock. Great Attractions Low-priced attractions abound as well. “The Mac King Comedy Hour” at Harrah’s Las Vegas is a great show value, with tickets priced at less than $24.95. The show contains quirky humor, visual gags and King’s sleight-of-hand, all delivered in a tongue-in-cheek fashion. Cheap Buffets For lunchtime bargain-hunters, nothing beats the classic $1.99 shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino, the oldest hotel in Las Vegas. For gourmet on a budget, many Las Vegas buffets now offer fare from around the world and at a reasonable price. The Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino’s Carnival World Buffet offers more 300 offerings and 70 dessert dishes from around the world - from pizza to omelets to teppan yaki to fresh pasta. Another example is Paris Las Vegas’ Le Village Buffet which showcases five provinces of France. Each station is themed for a particular province and features a different facade designed to replicate the architecture of that region. What could be more romantic than renewing your wedding vows in Las Vegas? Show her that you love her all over again with reasonably priced Renewal of Vows packages. Priced from just $195, couples can relive their special day at Chapel of the Flowers. Renewal of Vows includes use of the chapel, a candle-lighting ceremony, traditional music, courtesy limousine service, a DVD of the ceremony and much more. Shopping Discounts Looking for discounts at the mall? Go to www.VisitLasVegas.com. Under “Shopping,” users can download the Shop Las Vegas Passport coupon redeemable for gifts and discounts at most Las Vegas malls including Fashion Show, Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood and Las Vegas Premium Outlets to name a few. While you’re at the malls, check out the variety of free entertainment they offer, from singing gondoliers at Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian to the Forum Shops’ Roman statues that come to life inside Caesars Palace. 31

Life on the Rails

by: Javier Garza

eflecting back on my recent run on the Big Iron Horse, I find myself thinking about the people I met & reconnected with while riding the rails and adding memorable stories that will last me a lifetime. Every person that passes through our lives on their own rails makes a contribution to our life stories. There are those who play tremendous roles and make lasting impressions, but sometimes a brief special appearance before life takes them on another set of rail tracks creates a meaningful connection. It is a rare gift when they suddenly reappear in our lives after a long absence. Essence of the Rails Though the world may seem full of more people than we could ever possible ever know, we are drawn to those people with similar energy, which eventually will bring us together time & time again just like the railroads that criss-cross the country. On first meeting, the characters in our life stories may seem familiar. We may know each other from past lives or perhaps we recognize a kindred spirit. But when the steel rails of fate bring old friends back into our lives, there is always a reason. They may act as messengers, reminding us of a part of ourselves we have forgotten to nurture. They might appear to give us a chance to react in a new way to an old situation. They may even up unresolved issues so that we may complete them, giving us a chance to move forward along the railroad of life. Whether old friends, previous romances, or once and future partners, their reappearance is more than mere chance. They may never know what they bring into our lives, but the renewed contact is a gift. If this hasn’t happened to you, maybe you are meant

R

36

to initiate contact by seeking out old friends. If old friends come to mind via dreams, use their appearance as an excuse to get in touch. If an old song, a recently visited place or even a movie reminds you of them, reach out to share the gift of renewed contact. Special Gifts... What ever side of the tracks of connection/reconnection you fall on, be sure to look beyond the surprise of the moment to enjoy the deeper gift that this revelation from the rails brings..

Cowboys and More in Bandera

Silver Spur Guest Ranch

by: Laura Reynolds Moodie

ast September we were looking for a way to appease our five- year-old who wanted desperately to go camping. Now, Myron and I are NOT campers (him actually less so than me) so I started to look online and found Silver Spur Guest Ranch in Bandera. You have to understand that we have two boys -- an unbelievably bright, precocious five-year old and an autistic, developmentally-delayed special needs nineyear old who has sensory issues. We got up there on Friday evening and found out that we were it -- we were the ONLY guests scheduled for the weekend. My first thought was that this was a nightmare -- why on earth would they do all the advertised activities for only four people?! Surely they would cancel activities, etc. because it wasn’t worth doing for so few of us. I couldn’t have been more wrong! Instead this became a weekend that literally revolved around us thanks to the amazing staff. All About Us... There was a hayride every evening (whenever we were ready and finished with dinner!), and a campfire and s’mores when we returned. The food was great and tailored to the fact that our cook realized he was cooking for kids (though he was sure to include great things for us adults as well) and the staff made the weekend memorable for us all! We rode horseback and hiked. Best of all, from my perspective as a mother of a special needs child who does not really like to go new places, they bent over backwards to accommodate us and Logan. When we arrived, Logan was too upset to go into the building (everything was different and he was screaming and crying). Dinner was just about ready so Myron and I did what we always do, we traded off eating dinner and walking around outside with Logan. As I was finishing dinner, the cook brought out a box with dinner for Logan saying he figured at some point maybe when he calmed down that he might decide he was hungry. The next morning Logan had calmed down enough to go into

the main building for breakfast and the staff and cook greeted him as if they were old friends. We headed to the barn to go horseback riding (and as usual I was pretty wary because you never know how people will act with someone like Logan). The horse wrangler asked if we had ridden before (I had a few years ago, Myron had even more years ago -- middle school trip to YO Ranch I think -- Lawson had never ridden, Logan has been riding for the past few years at a therapeutic riding center in Pipe Creek). The wrangler had no reservations, just got us all up on horses and headed out. Horseback riding is calming for Logan so he was happy as a clam and Lawson enjoyed learning. It was a wonderful time -- everyone able to participate and no stress for me! Working with Our Family.... The entire weekend went this way, they indulged Lawson’s love of tractors by taking him to the barn to show him their John Deere, they realized Logan was a marshmallow fan and made sure there were plenty when we were out by the campfire. One night while we were doing a hayride, our driver stopped to show us the longhorns and made sure to pull up on the far side of them since he figured putting Logan too close would upset him. It was an amazing weekend for all of us. Now, again we were the only guests, but they could have just as easily canceled activities or reduced staff since we were the “only” ones, but instead they used the situation to OUR advantage and provided us with unbelievable service. Rave Reviews... Accommodations are what you would expect from a “dude ranch” -- rustic cabins with tile floors. We had a TV and all the regular hotel amenities (not sure that there was a phone, actually). Meals were very good and lots of it - breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus snacks and drinks left out during the day. It was almost a year ago and Lawson is still talking about it and asking when we can go back. Click here for more information. 37

Great Family Vacation Value

Jamaica Hilton

by: Alex Charpentier

ooking for a great destination for an affordable, convenient, family vacation? Look no further than the Hilton Rose Hall in Montego Bay, Jamaica. We took our annual family vacation there in early June of this year and were very satisfied with the value the resort provided us. Jamaica-Bound After weeks of on-line searching we booked our vacation directly through the airline and Costco Travel. For our family of four, an all-inclusive, six day, five night package was just under $3,000. Jamaica was not my first choice, having been there 12 years ago, but given our reduced vacation budget this year it offered us the most for our money. Jamaica has long offered the convenience of charter flights, inclusive airport transport and all-inclusive meal programs; a formula that has since been copied by many other family vacation destination spots. We prefer to travel with known hotel brands so that we can earn reward points for future vacation upgrades and additional free nights. My husband, who handles most of our big purchases due to his keen ability to find the best deals shopped around the internet for several weeks, at Hilton.com and every travel website imaginable before settling on Costco travel. Major Upgrade This top-rated family resort according to most popular travel websites recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation that can be felt in all of the public spaces. The five restaurants, fitness center, lobby and guest rooms are up to par with what one would expect from a stateside Hilton hotel. The check-in process was seamless and we were upgraded to a partial ocean view based on our Hilton Gold card status. Every room has a balcony with furniture that was ideal for taking in the gorgeous Caribbean sunsets.

L

38

For the Kids... For children under the age of 13 the resort offered the perfect mix of activities and amenities. With two water slides, a lazy river and two swimming pools our seven year old spent the entire day in the water. There were more than enough inner tubes for all guests, children and adults, to use on the lazy river and water slides. Every day at noon the staff held a series of organized sports and contests that ranged from an egg toss to a hula-hoop contest that attracted kids of all ages and their parents and rewarded winners with great souvenir prizes. In the evening a steel pulse band played for several hours before and after scheduled nightly themed entertainment. Food and Dining The main pool where the aforementioned water features are located boasts a walk up bar and grill with swim up access. Every day the food and beverage team offered up a new rum based cocktail of the day with a selection of fresh tropical fruit juices. The resort offers three luncheon restaurant options on a daily basis and depending on the day of the week three to four dinner restaurant options. We tried each restaurant once and were very pleased. Reservations for the restaurants can be conveniently made upon arrival through the concierge. Incredible Stafff The staff at the hotel was professional and friendly and all of our needs were met upon request. The other guests that we talked with also seemed pleased with their choice of resort and were very satisfied with the experience Hilton provided. Nice & French Riviera

Experiences

by: Jody Truly

he French Riviera... It’s absolute georgeousness amid humming mopeds and pooches pooping on the sidewalk... you look up at the snow covered French Alps on one side and the Mediterranean on the other and you’re in heaven. While walking on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice you might pass by a pair of 80 year old women walking their old little pooches while being swiftly passed by a shirtless man on rollerblades. It truly is a place where everyone can relax and take a deep breath. Europeans walk and walking in most any city on the Côte d’Azur can get you to beachside restaurants, pubs, shopping and entertainment. During the summer months there are lovely, but pricey, restaurants along any of the beaches. In Nice make sure to breeze through the Zone Pietone for some shopping and eating (La Pizza Cresci for unbelievable pizza). The Cours Saleya in old town Nice has a breathtaking flower market in the AM, great dining (Le Safari) and a fun night market with lots of things you will think you need. Buy a table cloth from Provence to remember the trip and eat up on the baguettes because it’s impossible to find such crispy and soft perfection in bread anywhere else. Cities along the coast will give you a fantastic rock (not sand) beach experience, high end shopping if you wish, Italian gelato and food, and people watching... Saint Tropez, Cannes, Antibes, Monaco. If you are looking to take a day or two away from the beach try St. Paul de Vence, Biot or Eze. The historic village of St. Paul de Vence is a great place to take your time and wander in and out of unique art galleries and shops. It’s quaint atmosphere is complemented with stone steps leading you up and through the village to

an amazing view over the cemetary and surrounding hillside. Travel back down from the village and any art lover must stop at the Fondation Maeght. It’s on exceptionally kept grounds with many modern pieces housed inside. The village of Biot brings you glass like you have never seen! The glassblowers are right before your eyes creating the pieces that they sell. There is also a wonderful village to shop for pottery and enjoy lunch. Eze is a clifftop village between Nice and Monaco. You are in for a hike up, but it’s worth the sore legs and sweat to see the amazing sea view from so high up. There is a unique cactus garden at the very top along with, of course, wonderful restaurants. A few pointers: • Rent a car and drive the coast to Monaco. • If you stay in Nice, pick a hotel between the fancy schmancy Hotel Negresco and Old Nice… there are plenty to choose from. • Spend the extra cash to rent a parasol and cot on the beach and take time to relax and listen to the water crash into the rocks on the beach. • Try using their language (even if you feel dumb) because they will appreciate it. 39
