Caliente Harley-Davidson Home of the Hottest Bikes

®

by: Rudy Arispe

S

ince opening its doors in 2006, Caliente Harley-Davidson has been doing steady business by supplying the hottest bikes to Harley lovers as San Antonio’s premier Harley dealership. Caliente Harley-Davidson is a 40,000-square-foot facility that offers the latest Harley models along with clothes and accessories. It features a 15,000-square-foot showroom, customer lounge with free Internet, classrooms for training courses and on-site rentals. Managing Partner Fred Bosshardt took time out to talk about the dealership’s support of the upcoming Muscular Dystrophy Association Black and Blue gala and the hottest deals around. What separates Caliente from other Harley dealerships: As San Antonio’s premier Harley dealership, it’s important to us to provide significant value to customers in these tough economic times. We are able to provide this through the quality of staff and the facility we have, as well as our products and services. We’re proud to be San Antonio’s only locallyowned Harley dealership, and we are a drug-free workplace. Tell me about the 2nd annual MDA Black and Blue gala: The purpose of the gala is to raise funds for research on neuromuscular diseases that affect more than one million Americans. Last year, we raised $20,000. We’re still working out details, but this year’s event will be sometime in November. Ruben V is on board to provide entertainment. You can check www.calienteharley.com for updates. 8

Why does Caliente support local charities: My wife, (coowner) Paige, and business partner, Bob Beadle, and I believe in supporting the community. We’re very fortunate that we have a strong, loyal customer base, and it’s important to give back to those in need. What was hot this past summer for Harley fans: Harley has some great models for 2009, and the 2010 models will be coming out soon. The hot thing right now is the great deals on the current year models. The engineering design changes they did for 2009 are outstanding. This along with the updated style points really make for a great bike. How do you keep cool in this blistering Texas heat: I drink a lot of liquids, and when I get on my bike I try to ride during hours when it’s not so hot. But it’s always cool when you’re on a Harley. www.thehotelguide.com

St Lucia

Restoration and Renewal

Jalousie Plantation, St. Lucia

radled on 192 acres of virgin rainforest in the embrace of St Lucia’s World Heritage-listed Pitons it is hard to imagine a location more conducive to relaxation and rejuvenation than Jalousie Plantation’s Rainforest Spa. Widely regarded as the island’s spiritual heart, the lush foliage and soaring mountain vistas of Val des Pitons provide the perfect backdrop for guests wishing to unwind and to experience a period of re-creation in its truest sense—a time for reflection, renewal and a break from the everyday stresses of life. In addition to the luxurious international Flora Spa treatments, the spa menu features all-natural local treatments which make extensive use of coconut, bananas, fresh aloe, cocoa, honey and other locally-grown fruit and herbs. There are seven treatment rooms at the Rainforest Spa and two private outdoor treatment cabanas with panoramic views so that clients have the option of having their treatments in air-conditioned comfort or au naturel in the shadow of the majestic Pitons. A separate salon specialises in manicures, pedicures, bridal make-up and hair services.

C

BEAUTY BY NATURE’S BOUNTY As everything goes organic, Jalousie’s Rainforest Spa features a selection of treatments designed to be as nourishing on the outside of the body, as their ingredients are to the inside. Free from chemicals, these all-natural rituals utilize the bounty of St Lucia unleashing beauty secrets the islanders have known for centuries. 26

Bananas, the local pride, to firm, tighten and smooth away wrinkles; coconut to exfoliate, aloe vera to rejuvenate and rich cocoa butter to heal and hydrate…pampering the skin has never made mouths water as these treatments do. The Rainforest Spa also has a range of signature treatments designed to connect clients to Jalousie Plantation’s very special location— harnessing the nourishing properties of nearby volcanic springs, and fertile cocoa plantations. The following rituals are among Jalousie Plantation’s unique spa experiences: Sensational Cocoa Melange This sensual journey begins with a tour of the neighbouring Fond Doux Estate which highlights the history of cocoa. Clients can see how cocoa is grown, taste the raw beans and see how they are dried in the sun before being roasted and pounded into fragrant cocoa sticks. Each person will return to Jalousie with a cocoa stick which is then grated, mixed with locally produced honey and used as a mask for the entire body. A cocoa oil massage follows and the whole experience is capped off with a mug of cocoa tea and other chocolate treats. Solar Sun Soother Aloe Vera Wrap Fresh aloe is used in a wrap crafted to soothe, hydrate and decrease redness and itching associated with overexposure to the sun. Suphur Seduction This treatment begins with an unforgettable trip to St Lucia’s very own Volcanic Sulphur Springs and a tour of the bubbling mud pools of this ancient and active volcano. Therapists guide and care for each client, slathering them in mineral-rich sulphur mud which is then left to tighten and dry in the sun, aiding in the natural exfoliation and detoxification of the skin. The next stop www.thehotelguide.com

is the volcano-warmed waters of the Piton Falls for an all-natural shower before returning to the Rainforest Spa.for refreshments and a choice of either a cooling leg and foot or soothing back massage. Caribbean Glow Sea Salt and freshly grated coconut are used in this gentle and reviving body scrub. The scrub exfoliates the dead skin cells, helps circulation, smoothes and rejuvenates skin. Skin Precision Secret banana and honey facial Banana and honey are combined to create a moisture-rich mask which nourishes and firms dry skin. Brown Sugar Scrub Brown sugar, oatmeal, coconut and essential oils are combined in this scrub which exfoliates and replenishes the skin to leave it silky and smooth. AYUREVEDIC TREATMENTS The Rainforest also offers an extensive range of Ayurevedic treatment for complete well-being and balance. Ayurveda is a system of natural healing which evolved on the Indian Sub- Continent some 3,000-5,000 years ago. In traditional Ayurveda it is believed that human beings are considered to be an inverted tree with the head as the root, the body as the trunk and limbs as the branches of the tree. Ayurveda is a series of holistic practices that encompass yoga, meditation, detoxification, massage, herbs and tinctures all specific to the individuals ‘dosha’ characteristics. The three mind-body constitutions or ‘doshas’ are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. A brief questionnaire (dosha analysis) is given to identify the dosha type that is most prominent and the appropriate products to be used. Among the Ayurvedic treatments available are: www.thehotelguide.com

St. Lucia

Abhyanga, synchronized massage A unique four-hand massage conducted by two therapists. Warm nourishing ‘dosha’ specific oils are worked into the body while providing a smooth, rhythmical massage flow working on the energy points of the body (chakras). Shirodhara This ancient Ayurvedic treatment is one of the most relaxing therapies, it awakens the third eye (ajna chakra) and lulls the entire body into a state of tranquility and peace, creating a soothing effect on the nervous system. It consists of massage to the head and shoulders to relax, followed by a streamline flow of dosha balancing oil that is slowly poured onto the forehead and a foot massage. Udvartana A specialised herbal treatment for weight reduction, cellulite and thorough exfoliation. A blend of purifying herbs is vigorously massaged into the body for approximately 35 minutes to detoxify the blood, nourish the outer tissue layers and breakdown fatty deposits. This concludes with a gentle touch over the body with a soothing herbal gel. A range of treatments is also available on Jalousie Plantation’s perfect white sand beach. Enjoy everything from a relaxing shoulder and scalp massage with cooling menthol, to a mini-manicure or pedicure—the emphasis is on winding away cares for the perfect vacation experience. For more information and bookings, contact Jalousie Plantation’s Rainforest Spa on telephone +1 758 456 8000. www.thejalousieplantation.com 27

A Myriad of Things to Do

Lake Charles, LA.

article by: Dale Blasingame

When was the last time you’ve been to Lake Charles, Louisiana? Chances are - it’s now a totally different city. Perfect Roadtrip Lake Charles is a perfect road trip distance for most people in Texas. It’s two and a half hours from Houston and a five-hour drive from San Antonio or Dallas. But did you know you can now fly to Lake Charles? Continental offers service from Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston and you can also catch non-stop flights to and from Dallas on American Airlines. That service just started earlier this summer. Very convenient. Gambling Anyone? The first thing that comes to mind when you hear “Lake Charles” is probably gambling - and with good reason. It’s home to several casinos, including the spectacular L’Auberge du Lac and the Isle of Capri. There are even more casinos, including Coushatta, just down the road. Lake Charles is actually the closest casino destination for two of the country’s seven biggest cities, Houston and San Antonio. You can find everything you need there to get your gambling fix - slots, blackjack, poker and buffets. Creole Nature Trail There’s more to Lake Charles than the casinos. How about enjoying Mother Nature? Lake Charles is part of the Creole Nature Trail - 180 miles of bayous, marshland and shoreline in southwest Louisiana. This area is actually known as an All-American Road, the highest designation from the US Department of Transportation.

I

28

You can see alligators and hundreds of birds in their natural habitats in the Louisiana Outbreak. There’s also several areas for great fishing and hunting. Beaches, too Don’t forget about the beaches. Lake Charles has the only white sand inland beach on the entire Gulf Coast. There’s also a boardwalk that connects the beach to several of the city’s parks. There are even more beaches a short drive down to the coast. Mardi Gras It’s hard to not think about Mardi Gras when you go to Louisiana. That’s the case in Lake Charles - which has the largest display of Mardi Gras costumes in the entire world at its Mardi Gras Museum. You can learn all about the celebration, King Cakes and even see what it’s like to get on a Mardi Gras float. Golfing And if that’s not enough, Lake Charles has some great golf courses. In fact, there are six of them there - all with their own unique challenges and scenery. So, when’s the next time you’re going to Lake Charles? Better make a vacation out of it. There’s a lot to see. Budget Travel in Sin City

Las Vegas

or those looking to make the most of their travel budget while visiting the “Entertainment Capital of the World,” there are several options for the value-conscious visitor. Here are just a few: Free attractions line the Las Vegas Strip and they’re not hard to find. The Mirage’s volcano erupts in a lagoon filled with waterfalls and palm trees every 15 minutes from dusk to midnight. The Mirage has joined forces with legendary Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, Indian music sensation Zakir Hussein, and the Fountains of Bellagio design firm WET to create an all-new audio/visual spectacle for its famous volcano attration. WET forges a primal volcanic environment of sound, light, music and heat with choreographed FireShooters, which send massive fireballs more than 12 feet into the air. The volcano attraction features a state-of-the-art sound system with music and sound specially created by Hart and Hussein. Next door, nightly passersby can catch the “Sirens of TI” at Treasure Island. The revamped version showcases the popular pyrotechnic war as male renegade pirates battle “sexy sirens” of Sirens’ Cove. Performances run every 90 minutes beginning at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, the world-famous Fountains at Bellagio thrill visitors with more than 1,000 water-emitting devices choreographed to music by artists such as Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Whitney Houston and Andrea Bocelli. At The Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, the newly reinvented “Show in the Sky” features dancers in costume fashions on floats suspended above the crowd. Three different performances include sexy and seductive “scenes” coordinated to today’s top music hits. Downtown’s famous, casino-lined street is now the Fremont Street Experience, a 175,700-square-foot pedestrian area covered by a continuous canopy studded with more than 14 million lights. Each evening on the hour, this canopy comes alive with spectacular light-and-sound shows. From Las Vegas Hilton to Luxor to JW Marriott, most major resorts offer free lounge entertainment that is

available practically around the clock. Great Attractions Low-priced attractions abound as well. “The Mac King Comedy Hour” at Harrah’s Las Vegas is a great show value, with tickets priced at less than $24.95. The show contains quirky humor, visual gags and King’s sleight-of-hand, all delivered in a tongue-in-cheek fashion. Cheap Buffets For lunchtime bargain-hunters, nothing beats the classic $1.99 shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino, the oldest hotel in Las Vegas. For gourmet on a budget, many Las Vegas buffets now offer fare from around the world and at a reasonable price. The Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino’s Carnival World Buffet offers more 300 offerings and 70 dessert dishes from around the world - from pizza to omelets to teppan yaki to fresh pasta. Another example is Paris Las Vegas’ Le Village Buffet which showcases five provinces of France. Each station is themed for a particular province and features a different facade designed to replicate the architecture of that region. What could be more romantic than renewing your wedding vows in Las Vegas? Show her that you love her all over again with reasonably priced Renewal of Vows packages. Priced from just $195, couples can relive their special day at Chapel of the Flowers. Renewal of Vows includes use of the chapel, a candle-lighting ceremony, traditional music, courtesy limousine service, a DVD of the ceremony and much more. Shopping Discounts Looking for discounts at the mall? Go to www.VisitLasVegas.com. Under “Shopping,” users can download the Shop Las Vegas Passport coupon redeemable for gifts and discounts at most Las Vegas malls including Fashion Show, Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood and Las Vegas Premium Outlets to name a few. While you’re at the malls, check out the variety of free entertainment they offer, from singing gondoliers at Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian to the Forum Shops’ Roman statues that come to life inside Caesars Palace. 31

Great Places to Sleep with a Ghost

Bed & Breakfasts

ysterical or historical, ghostly spirits make themselves as comfortable in America’s B&Bs as living guests do, and not just in the dead of night. No one’s sure if it’s the great breakfasts, the warm hospitality, or the atmosphere of these historic homes, but the friendly spirits simply don’t want to leave. In a recent B&B survey, conducted by BedandBreakfast.com, innkeepers revealed that nearly 20 percent (an estimated 3600) of the inns in the United States are haunted. This leaves ample opportunity to sleep with a ghost for those who seek experiences with the the world beyond.

H

Although innkeepers are often afraid to share stories about hosting ghosts for fear of scaring guests, more than 100 B&Bs dare to reveal their ghostly happenings and haunted hospitality here. Red Garter B&B, Williams, AZ: Owner-innkeeper John Holst describes himself as a “hardcore skeptic” when it comes to ghostly apparitions. But he has come to terms with his B&B’s resident ghost, named Eve. This two-story 1897 Victorian Romanesque-style bed and breakfast, once considered the rowdiest abode on Williams’ Saloon Row, operated as a bar and bordello until the 1940s. A steep flight of steps known as the “Cowboy’s Endurance Test” led to the girls upstairs. Holst is pretty sure that one of the women of the night never left. While most guests have a good night’s sleep, a few have said they felt the bed shake, heard someone going up and down the stairs or felt something touching their arms, according to Holst. Come experience it for yourself with nightly ‘Walking Ghost Tours’ until Halloween and ‘Ghost Tales of the Grand Canyon Area’ through the winter. Brannan Cottage Inn, Calistoga, CA: Built in 1860, this inn offers two haunted rooms available for the brave and curious. Visit in October to enjoy plenty of lights and creepy Halloween fashion. The Groveland Hotel, Groveland, CA: An old gold-miner named Lyle was found dead with a box of dynamite under his bed here yet still prefers to hang around. Spirited storyteller and innkeeper Peggy Mosley has a collection of Lyle stories compiled from employees and guests that she loves to tell. Although a recluse in life, Lyle’s spirit tends to the playful. He particularly dislikes women’s cosmetics on ‘his’ dresser and has been known to move such items to a nearby sink. One Groveland Hotel guest watched as her new makeup ‘hopped’ over 32

the back of the dresser and landed on the floor. Lyle is a great tease who likes to tinker with lights and water, and enjoys moving items around desktops. Strawberry Creek Inn B&B, Idyllwild, CA: According to a local clairvoyant, at least six spirits haunt this house, which has been through many incarnations as a dentist office, restaurant, and a home for troubled boys. On several occasions, guests complained that their rooms were freezing cold, yet when the innkeepers checked, the rooms actually seemed warm. The clairvoyant explained that is the ghostly way of showing displeasure with a person. One persnickety spirit is believed to be a housewife who is quite protective of the house. Pictures have actually flown from walls in the private cottage here too, and sometimes doors are held shut. One guest saw the spirit of a little girl who asked “Are you my mommy?” Gate House Inn, Jackson, CA: According to the innkeepers of this historic Queen Anne mansion, a “Garden Ghost” appeared soon after the unruly overgrowth around the mansion was cleared away for new gardens. An innkeeper actually reported a “tap” on his shoulder while working outside. Although no paranormal activity has been reported within the inn, the surrounding land has a ghostly presence. MacCallum House Inn, Mendocino, CA: According to town lore, Donald MacCallum – born in 1880 as the only son of Daisy and Alexander MacCallum – never truly left the second floor. Many guests over the years have testified to strange and unexplained happenings in room 4, where Donald slept from the time he was an infant. The Napa Inn B&B, Napa, CA:, Emma Krasov, writing for RealTravelAdventures.com reveals that with the building’s many transformations from a home for delinquent boys to the city’s Police Station, it’s no surprise that spirits are hanging on. Emma writes “Some friendly ghosts from the old photographs on the wall next to a piano were watching the ever changing carnival of strangers, now inhabiting their former family rooms.” Guests are assured that all ghosts are friendly and welcoming. Albert Shafsky House B&B Inn, Placerville, CA: Albert Shafsky built his home in 1902 – and according to the innkeepers here, he’s still hanging around. Shafsky sometimes locks guests out of their rooms and leaves www.thehotelguide.com

pennies in strange places. An apparition fitting his description has even been seen standing at the foot of one guest’s bed.

US spirits here, documented by investigators of the paranormal. Stay over Halloween or any other time of year, and you just might experience them.

Queen Anne Hotel, San Francisco, CA: Built as a girls’ finishing school following the Gold Rush, the headmistress apparently hasn’t given up her role of tending to the needs of the building’s occupants. Dozens of accounts speak of “Miss Mary Lake” appearing briefly in a mirror or being noticed as a hot or cold spot in a room. There’s even an odd report of Mary tucking in a napping traveler with the blanket snugly tucked all the way around the bed. The occurrences all happen in what’s referred to as “Miss Mary Lake Suite” or “the haunted room” (No. 410). No wonder this is the hotel’s most popular room among those seeking a chance at the third dimension. Celebrity psychic Nancy Bradley and Paranormals “Gold Rush Ghosts” have verified that the building is haunted and confirm the ghosts are friendly. It’s the first stop on the Pacific Heights Ghost Trek.

Texas White House, Fort Worth, TX: The ghost here is believed to be the husband of the only family who ever lived in the house. He died here and now haunts his old bedroom (now the Lone Star Room). Interestingly, the ghost sightings occur when a single woman is staying in the room. One woman awoke in the middle of the night, feeling that someone was lying on the bed beside her, back to back. She says that for several minutes she lay perfectly still, then she felt the “person” start to move off of the bed. At that point she turned over very quickly to see who it was, and no one was there. The overhead light then came on, even though no one had turned it on. Another woman awoke feeling someone getting into bed with her. She turned over immediately to see who it was, but no one was there. Immediately afterwards, her cell phone, which was plugged in several feet away, began to beep and wouldn’t stop for several seconds. She says that her phone had never done that before. A third woman reported that she felt a presence in the corner. Later that night she felt the same presence again on the other side of the bed. Thus far, all of the presences have been “friendly.”

Santa Paula Inn, Santa Paula, CA: Built in 1912 as the town’s mortuary, this building was destroyed when the St, Francis Dam broke and 900 buildings were washed away. More than 200 bodies were stacked up here for loved ones to identify. Most have moved on, but a few continue to hang around reminding guests to “wash away” cares at this peaceful inn. Ghost Rails Inn, Alberton, MT: A century ago, the old Milwaukee Railroad paused here to take on water and change crews; the inn was built to house the railroad workers. When the Milwaukee Road abandoned services and pulled up the tracks in the 1970s, the town of Alberton nearly disappeared. It’s coming back to life today as a bedroom community for nearby Missoula, just 30 minutes away. The railroading days live on in the form of a phantom brakeman, still awaiting his call upstairs in the old hotel, according to the tales of those who’ve seen him. Bottger Mansion of Old Town, Albuquerque, NM: Resident ghosts sigh, pace, and sometimes even dance. There are three confirmed, and more likely six contented www.thehotelguide.com

Prince Solms Inn Bed & Breakfast, New Braunfels, TX: In the early 1900s, a young woman clad in a lacy wedding dress waited for her husband to arrive for their wedding at this inn. He did not appear, and despite a thorough search, he was deemed to have disappeared. The woman vowed to reside at the inn until he came and stayed on the staff for the next 20 years until her death in the late 1920s, still awaiting her true love. In 1930, a man arrived by horseback in search of a woman, and when he climbed the stairs to find her, innkeepers reported seeing the woman waiting in her wedding dress. The couple embraced then slowly disappeared. No one ever came to claim his horse, tied to the hitching post. Since then, there have been numerous sightings of a woman in her wedding dress. Stories from the Second Barstool on the Left

by: Javier Garza

am Beauty, I am Love I am friendship, the unconditional comforter. I am that which forgives and promptly forgets. The Spirit of Wine sang into my glass, and I listened with love to her odorous music; her flushed and magnificent song. I took one sip; closed my eyes and every beautiful thing I had ever known or experienced crowded into my memory..” Once again I find myself at my usual spot, the 2nd barstool from the left at the place I have come to know as my “Fortress of Solitude” aka The Wine Cellar Bistro & Boutique in San Marcos, Texas. Brian Montegomery is the owner of my “watering hole”. I’ve been frequenting this place since March of 2005 and I can still remember the very first bottle I tried at this wine bar. It was the 2002 Sunhidol Gamza from the Donau Valley (Bulgaria). Since then I was hooked. Why? Good question. Believe me there are several wine bars that I have visited in Austin with wine lists that even impressed a Cork-Dork like me. Now, does the Wine Cellar have an impressive collection of classified first growth Borbeaux? Any California Cult Cabernets? Answer, no. So why am I drawn to this place over & over again? The Wine Cellar boasts a “collection” NONE of the other wine bars in the Austin area I doubt will ever possess. This impressive “collection “ is his staff. Most are college kids, wait I mean young adults trying to make ends meet while pursuing their education, that have a GENUINE passion for wine. Each one of them I know on a first name basis, which, is always comforting. I get most of my enjoyment from the lively discussions about wines and I love when they tell me about the wine book I recommended to them. It tells me they take pride in their jobs and are eager to learn. I can see the excitement in their eyes when they ask me if I’ve tried a certain wine. Wine by nature, is a complex subject. Now, I don’t claim to be the Child-Prodigy, Boy Genius of Wine Culture, but I can hold my own on ANY discussion about wine and can spot the infamous “pseudo-intellectual wannabe wine experts” that work at most of the wine bars in Austin. You shouldn’t be made to feel like an idiot because you don’t know the difference between “a Bordeaux & a Claret”. I bring this up because I asked an employee over at Cru in Austin what the difference was. She only babbled a bunch of regurgitated crap to me for 20 minutes and afterwards she had another fellow employee come over & elaborate on the subject in greater

“I

36

detail. Once I informed them that they were wrong, I got snubbed by 2/3 of the entire staff! How dare a customer insult their wine intelligence. The couple at the next table over came to my rescue, they did tell them that I was right. I tell you, if looks could kill, I’d be pushing daisies right now. Oh, and before I forget, do you know what the difference between a Bordeaux & a Claret? Claret is the term the British use when referring to a French Bordeaux, it’s the same wine..... Will the above scenario ever happen at the Wine Cellar in San Marcos? I’ve been going there just over 4 years and I’ve NEVER seen it happen. That’s the reason why I GLADLY offer a sample from my bottle to the staff and sometimes to what ever customer walks in. The only sure-fire way to learn about wine is to go out and try different wines. I religiously keep a highly detailed wine journal and I also insist that the staff write their own tasting notes. Mind you taste is subjective; just because I like a particular wine doesn’t mean that you will like it. Wines are meant to be shared with friends and invariably they lead to fascinating discussions. Which, on the advice of the Wine Cellar staff & numerous customers have led to this collection of my tasting notes from the Cask Room. - Javier “The Self Proclaimed Certified Cork-Dork” www.thehotelguide.com

Journey of Friends and Family

Las Vegas Style

Experiences

by: Isha St. Amour

ne of the places my husband Bruce and I enjoy going to is Las Vegas. It has always been a great experience with much laughter. We were fortunate that this time around we were able to share our experience with our closest friends.

O

Once we arrived in McCarran Airport in Las Vegas, we took the shuttle to the rental car center where we got our minivan. Yes, I said minivan J. The process with the car rental went pretty smooth.

On our last night, we bought some tickets to see Nickelback perform at the MGM Grand. Opening the concert for Nickelback were Papa Roach and Hinder. We had a fabulous time at the concert. We were screaming like teenagers! Although we didn’t come back rich with money, we came back rich in other ways, the ones that count most in life: fond memories and the cherished moments with our great friends.

We were in Vegas for two nights and stayed at the Excalibur. There was no particular reason for staying there other than I wanted to stay in that side of the strip. On our first day, we walked most of the strip taking pictures every two seconds with three different cameras. We went to dinner at the Tender Steak & Seafood Restaurant located at the Luxor Hotel prior to going to see Cirque du Soleil, Criss Angel’s magic show, Believe. There was a lot of anticipation in seeing this show as we had watched some of his work in television. We were all very disappointed. The actual show put me to sleep. I would not recommend it at all. The second day we decided to go to the old Strip. Although I was a little reluctant to go there, I was very happy we did. We were able to see the pictures in real life from old Vegas movies. Later, we did more sightseeing and walking at the new Strip, visited several hotels along the way and took lots of pictures. One of the hotels I loved was the Wynn Hotel. In one word, beautiful! www.thehotelguide.com

Tortuga Bay is an Amazing Jewel

Experiences

Dominican Republic

by: Jody Truly

unta Cana rests on the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic. It is truly a must-see for anyone seeking beach paradise! An interesting and notable fact is that Punta Cana has only been around for the last 40 years, growing up to be a true resort and tourist destination. When flying in you will notice that everyone on the plane is a tourist just like you. Now, this could be a bad thing if you are going for peace and quiet... here is where I will help you out with the amazing jewel of a hotel called Tortuga Bay. Tortuga Bay, which is one part of the Puntacana Resort & Club, is the definition of amazing and I am left with only positive things to say. The staff is top notch, helpful and friendly, but never in your face. The service will leave you wanting nothing, especially since the hotel gives you a cell phone to call your bungalow manager at any time from anywhere on the amazingly large property. The views of crystal blue water and white sand are breathtaking from almost anywhere on the resort. The breeze off the water keeps you cool, but so does the breeze from driving around your own personal golf cart during your stay! The Six Senses Spa has amazing service and a lavish menu that will leave you relaxed and energized. I recommend the hot stone massage and facial. The championship La Cana Golf Course, of which we didn’t participate, was designed by P.B. Dye and looked lovely. There are countless other water and land activities you can enjoy as well... if you feel like moving! Otherwise, you will spend your “down time” trying to figure out if the numbers would ever crunch to have a second home on their property. It’s truly that great! For those of you that like simplicity, the resort offers a whisking service when you deboard the plane. This means that a personal greeter and golf cart is waiting for you and you only... you feel like a celebrity for a brief moment in time! LIkewise, on the way home you get to breeze past everyone in security and wait in an air conditioned VIP room. La-tee-

da! For those of you that like to be able to brag in your circles, the entire resort of Tortuga Bay was designed by the Dominican world renowned designer, Oscar de la Renta. Each room is perfectly poised in dark woods, whites, yellows, and a splash of color here and there. For those of you that like to talk eco-friendly, this resort has an ecological preserve loaded with native plants and animals which you can explore at your leisure. And for those of you that just want to be left alone, you will see very few people in this secluded and pristine resort. So I say all of this and you may think you will be left without a single dime and an arm and leg after you get finished paying for it.... and, yes, it is pricey. However, if you like luxury and don’t like to pay for it, check out their specials! A few other things worth noting is the food is not the best I’ve ever eaten, but still very satisfying, the complimentary plantain chips and caribbean salsa by the pool are to die for, full breakfast is included and can be delivered to your room for only a $10 service charge, and the staff will do anything to make your stay more comfortable and enjoyable. A+++

Machu Pichu

The Ascent to Heaven by: Lina Cuartas

achu Picchu was the holiest of sites for the Incas; the civilization that had managed to dominate Peru when the European explorers arrived. It was the axis of the empire, surrounded by a lush valley fed by one of the biggest tributaries of the Amazon River, the Urubamba. It was a pilgrimage site, a meeting place of roads leading far into South and Central America. It also seems to have been a place of higher learning of a visionary sort. I had dreamed about a place where I could touch the stars. Life was simple, but harmonious. I had seen this fortification of stone surrounded by friendly emerald peeks and guarded by a blanket of uninterrupted heavens. It turned out to be the legendary Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu was a successful city, with a magical and religious structure of power. It was a place where skills were mastered and taught. The Incas were peaceful, stealthy conquerors. They managed to dominate rivals either by marrying into their royal families or by stealing their tutelary, or protective gods. Then, they chose the Masters at the craft for which each culture was known; such as textiles, pottery or metal works and took them to Machu Picchu to teach their craft to the few lucky ones chosen to live in the Holy place. When you first get to Machu Picchu, the sheer size of the separate construction areas is impressive. There are houses, storage rooms, offertory chambers and gathering spaces made with stones that were polished to fit like jigsaw puzzles. They were hauled from nearby mountains and the Urubamba River on rolling logs and lifted onto levers, with precise incisions for maneuvering and holes for drainage. A complex duct network feeds the every single building with water; in an astounding display of hydraulics knowledge that rivals our own technology. There are so many details that also reveal knowledge

and sophistication! There are abundant terraces dominating the design that give the city the layered look that we have seen in all the famous Machu Picchu photographs. There were three distinct purposes for the terraces. The wider, taller ones were for agriculture. The slightly narrower and steeper ones were meant for support and to prevent erosion. The longer ones, abundant in the courtyard and pathways, were ornamental and frequently also had animals, such as vicuùas, on them. The awe and wonder that this mystical place inspires has even made visitors wonder if the construction was the work of extraterrestrial beings. No such has thing has ever been demonstrated, but they definitely were extraordinary terrestrial beings. Their mastery of agriculture was phenomenal. Pollen traces of products that are harvested in the jungle, such as sugar cane, pineapple and cotton have been found in the different terraces designed for cultivation. Each level had a distinct degree of acidity or alkalinity, an angle of sunlight, a type of soil and temperature, and they used these factors to domesticate an amazing variety of potatoes, corn, fruits, and even to adapt harvests from other environments and manage to make them thrive by manipulating the varying conditions each terrace offered. We seem to be in such desperate need to learn to live in this precious planet without destroying its resources forever, and I see that there is so much wisdom that is at a terrifying risk of loss if we don’t look back at what a great civilization like the Incas can teach us. We came as tourists, and learned about lessons in tolerance, diversity, respect for nature’s laws and rhythms, water conservation, crop rotation, climate change and witnessed the beautiful simplicity of lives dedicated to enhance fertility and aspirations of holiness, without the need for much material wealth. The Incas are still alive in the Quechua that is spoken throughout the Cuzco region, in these welcoming people that are eager to share the stories of their ancestors and to teach us everything that still lives in their memories. Let us not wait any longer and be willing to learn and listen. 39
