Experience a Texas Gem

Beaumont, Texas

eaumont was put on the map with Spindletop and is known for its oil history and heritage. But with a little bit of Cajun and a whole lot of Texas spirit, Beaumont is a city you must experience to understand why locals are just so dang proud to live here. Think gorgeous southern homes & friendly Texans, lush greenery & cool flowing waters, famous country musicians & food festivals, shopping & fine dining. This is Texas like nowhere else. History and Heritage The Lucas Gusher discovered in Beaumont in 1901 is affectionately called “Spindletop,” and prompted an oil boom in America unlike any the country had ever seen before. Overnight, thousands of sightseers, fortune seekers, and “boomers” poured into Beaumont as news of the discovery spread. Flowing at nearly 100,000 barrels a day, the oil discovery ushered in the industrial revolution giving rise to major petroleum companies, many of which are still in business today. Beaumont’s heritage is also visible in our beautifully renovated and historic downtown areas. Museums, historic homes, theatres, trendy restaurants and businesses reside in many of the beautiful historic buildings built with the oil money from Spindletop. New brick paved sidewalks, landscaping and charming street lamps are recent adornments to the downtown area. Music, Art and Culture Many famous musicians have come from Beaumont and Southeast Texas. Some notables are Tracy Byrd and Mark Chesnutt. Other legends include: Janis Joplin, George Jones, The Big Bopper and Blind Willie Johnson. 8

Beaumont has numerous famous artisans, such as Robert Rauschenberg and Keith Carter. In addition, our thriving arts community includes an array of art galleries and studios as well as performing arts venues and organizations. Some of these are the Symphony of Southeast Texas, Beaumont Civic Ballet, Opera Beaumont, The Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Julie Rogers and Jefferson Theatres and others. We’re also known as the “Museum Capital of Texas”. With 19 museums, we have more museums per capita than any other city in the State of Texas… and that’s big! Food and Festivals Beaumont is on the border of Louisiana and boasts some of the best food! With a mix of both Texas & Cajun cultures, we offer visitors delicious crawfish dishes, ettouffe, boudain, jambalaya, gumbo and some of the best BBQ in the state! Beaumont is also known for its fairs and festivals. From the YMBL South Texas State Fair, to Dogtober Fest, to the variety of food festivals hosted each year, there’s always something happening for out-oftowners to enjoy. Nature and Outdoors With such a rich oil history, many are surprised at the abundance of nature in southeast Texas. Beaumont is on the border of the Gulf of Mexico and to our north is the lush Big Thicket National Preserve which is a haven for birders, canoe enthusiasts, hikers and eco-tourists, campers and fisherman. The Neches River also flows through downtown Beaumont where visitors can take guided boat rides aboard the Cardinal Riverboat. Beaumont really is Texas like no where else. A Bed of Roses

Tyler, Texas

T

yler has long been known for the excitement and pageantry of the Texas Rose Festival. This year, the Tyler community will come together to offer a month of activities and workshops to celebrate the flower that put Tyler on the map through the 2nd annual Rose Season. Rose Season spans from October 7-23 with a myriad of attractions and activities every weekend. The most notable and historic of these activities is the 78th annual Texas Rose Festival. Texas Rose Festival takes place October 1315. Activities include the Texas Rose Festival Show, Texas Rose Festival Coronation, Texas Rose Festival Queen’s Tea, and of course the popular Texas Rose Festival Parade. Last year was the inaugural year for Rose Season in Tyler and was widely attended and applauded throughout the community. So much so that the organizers have chosen to keep Rose Season as an annual event and hope to continue to grow the activities and community involvement associated. In 2010, Rose Season brought an estimated economic impact to Tyler of over 2 million dollars. Events surrounding Texas Rose Festival in its first year brought into Tyler an estimated 20,000 tourists, in excess of those attending Texas Rose Festival Events. Rose Season was created to offer more options for tourists who not only wanted to experience the history of Texas Rose Festival, but also sample more other attractions which make Tyler unique. Texas Rose Festival In 1933, during the height of the Great Depression, a group of Tyler civic and community leaders decided to create a festival to showcase Tyler’s rose industry. Thanks to the Oil Boom, Tyler had been somewhat insulated from the reality much of the rest of the country was experiencing. Tyler had real cause to celebrate, so 20

was born the Texas Rose Festival known in the beginning as the Tyler Rose Festival. The annual festivities were quickly adopted and word of the elaborate gowns and awing roses spread statewide. As the years progressed, The Texas Rose Festival played host to multiple dignitaries, First Ladies, and future presidents and gained much national attention. Today, tourists come from all over to be a part of Texas history and participate in this annual celebration. Texas Rose Season, 2011 Tyler celebrates Rose Season with an abundance of activities from family fun to educational and cultural events to horticultural workshops. Throughout the month of October, Tyler’s calendar is overflowing with opportunities. Some activities include wine tastings, disk golf tournament, concerts, marathon, renaissance festival, cooking classes, museum tours, numerous nature activities, self guided and guided rose garden tours, and much more. ith so many beautiful hikes and drives, Fall is the perfect time to hit the trail or road in Colorado. There are some wonderful family-friendly hikes to explore some of the alpine lakes in the Rocky Mountains. Lily Pad Trail in Silverthorne is a 3.2 mile round trip hike that is great for young and old. On this hike you are following in the footsteps of early 19th century fur trappers. Along the way, you might see beavers, chipmunks, elk and even moose. The highlight is the two lakes – Lower Lily Pad Lake and Upper Lily Pad Lake. From mid-summer through fall the lily pads abound in the lakes, especially in Lower Lily Pad Lake. Hanging Lake was named a national natural landmark this year and it is one of Colorado’s most unusual lakes, located about 40 minutes west of Vail or 10 minutes east of Glenwood Springs. Parking is very limited so a tip is to get there by 8:30am or after 3:00pm. It’s a short steep trail so sneakers or hiking shoes are a must. It’s 1.2 miles up to the lake with an elevation gain of 936 feet. The trail is steepest near the top where you climb a stone staircase with a guardrail. The turquoise color to the lake is because of the travertine, which is a form of 26

limestone deposited by mineral springs. The lake was formed when a geological fault caused the lake bed to drop away from the valley floor above. The water flowing into the lake is called Bridal Veil Falls. Before heading back down take the short rocky trail to Sprouting Rock, which was formed from centuries of water dissolving a passage through the limestone to create a spectacular waterfall out of a sheer cliff wall. There’s no swimming or fishing but you can walk into the caves underneath the falls at Hanging Lake or Spouting Rock if you want to cool off. Near Aspen is the Maroon-Snowmass Trail. If you want to hike the whole thing, it’s an 11 mile hike over the saddle to Crested Butte. But you can do a shorter www.thehotelguide.com

hike to Crater Lake. Start at Maroon Lake, which was created by an Ice-age glacier. Most high altitude lakes were created that way. The hike from Maroon Lake to Crater Lake is about 1.5 miles. There are a few short steep inclines along the way but the views are worth it. You will get amazing views of the Maroon Bells, which are considered the most photographed peaks in Colorado. There are so many incredible drives to check out fall foliage. Here are a couple of the most popular: Guanella Pass Scenic and Historic Byway: From the historic town of Georgetown on I-70, take this rambling route south to find pockets of aspen and high-altitude nirvana. Highest elevation on Guanella Pass is 11,699 feet. The aspens are more prevalent on the southern side of the pass. Once you reach Grant, turn right on US 285 and take the highway for 15 minutes to the top of Kenosha Pass, where on the slopes that encircle South Park, the aspens thrive. Trail Ridge Road (US 34) through Rocky Mountain National Park: Take US 36 through Estes Park to the Rocky Mountain National Park. Once in park, drive the highest paved road in the contiguous 48 states. One tip, check the weather forecast as the weather and road conditions can www.thehotelguide.com

CO.

change quickly. Trail Ridge road peaks at 12,183 feet in elevation. You’ll exit the west side of the park and can continue US 34 to Grand Lake. Independence Pass (CO 82): From I-70 take US 24 west. You’ll pick up Independence Pass south ofLeadville. At Twin Lakes, you pick up Highway 82 toward Aspen. Is is beautiful drive through the San Isabel National Forest with picturesque views of the Sawatch Range, home to several of Colorado’s 54 14ers. This pass closes with the first heavy snowfall. Steamboat Springs (CO 40 West): Take I-70 west to Empire and exit onto US 40 West. On your way to Steamboat Springs, you drive through many scenic passes including Berthoud Pass, Muddy Pass, and Rabbit Ears Pass. If you want to check out a ride instead of a drive, then enjoy the leaves by train on the Pike’s Peak Cog Railway or The Royal Gorge Route Railroad.

NY

Grand Hyatt New York Lavish updates abound

ituated in the heart of Manhattan adjacent to Grand Central Terminal, Grand Hyatt New York ushers in a new era with the final phase of its $130 million renovation to transform the guest experience. The hotel boasts redesigned guestrooms, a new restaurant, a refreshed lobby and mezzanine level, creative new social event spaces, a revitalized ballroom, and the innovative gourmet grab-and-go food concept called Market. This past November, more than 150 newly redesigned rooms, spanning two floors of the hotel, became available for guests. As the renovation continues through 2011, the new guestrooms and suites will become available floor-byfloor until all 1,311 rooms have been renovated. New York Central, the highly anticipated new bar and restaurant of Grand Hyatt New York, opened in mid-November and is the only restaurant in New York located above a sidewalk. Several coveted tables appear to float above the street as the city’s excitement passes below. Chef Christian Ragano, who joins the restaurant from Park Hyatt Chicago’s famed NoMI, offers a diverse menu inspired by the flavors of Western Europe. “The renovation of Grand Hyatt New York represents a rebirth, reshaping the legacy of this historic hotel,” said Matthew Adams, Area Vice President - New York for Hyatt Hotels & Resorts. “With the new room designs and New York Central, our new look and feel will exceed expectations of the most discerning travelers, bringing a fresh travel experience to our New York landmark.” Several world-renowned design and architecture firms are collaborating on the transformation of Grand Hyatt New York. The architecture and design firm Bentel & Bentel designed the new lobby, New York Central, Market, and the new meeting rooms. The firm is known

for its contemporary design approach and its work on New York trendsetting restaurants such as The Modern and Eleven Madison Park, in addition to several major hotel projects. The new guestrooms and Empire Ballroom were designed by noted hospitality interior design firm Looney & Associates, whose portfolio includes resorts and hotels around the world. Introducing New Guestrooms: A Decidedly Residential Feel Inside each new room at Grand Hyatt New York, refined hues, lush textures and engaging artwork evoke the mood of a sleek, modern Manhattan residence. The minimalist décor creates a calming sanctuary, far from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan’s heart beating below in the city’s iconic epicenter – Grand Central Terminal. Rather than treating the guestroom as a grouping of individual furnishings placed together, the Looney & Associates approach is to compile a bespoke collection of articles, each dependent upon the other for their purpose and composition. The result is a gracious haven where both leisure and corporate guests can feel comfortable, relaxed, and at home. Warm indirect lighting illuminates tailored furnishings that reinforce the contemporary aesthetic and design in the guestrooms. Australian walnut complements the rooms’ textiles, which entwine tweed, leather, cashmere, and brushed silk in shades of taupe, champagne and plum. The guestroom design deliberately and seamlessly integrates art into the space. In lieu of a conventional head board, the guestroom wall becomes a canvas for Per Fronth, a Norwegian artist whose imagery captures the soul of New York – from the shimmer of twilight to the mystery of night - a dream of the city. Each guestroom configuration offers a distinctive, functional layout that takes full advantage of the hotel’s singular architecture. The largest rooms will be www.thehotelguide.com

converted to VIP suites with design elements that include espresso tinted walnut, expansive glass enclosed showers and opulent lounge areas that reinforce the residential character of the new design. A Bold New Restaurant: New York Central New York Central brings a new sophistication to Grand Hyatt New York, appealing to global travelers and local New Yorkers. The restaurant, designed by Bentel & Bentel, is nearly 6,000 sq. ft. and welcomes guests from two entrances – a grand blue granite staircase or the dedicated elevator located in the lower lobby. Inside, a stunning custom chandelier suspended above the entire space accentuates the curve of the bar and soar over the lounge, casting a twinkling glow visible from the street and lobby below. The illuminated white bar is a centerpiece that can be seen from 42nd Street and incorporates seating around the entire bar. The wine gallery features a 30-foot glass art panel by Per Fronth. The lounge at New York Central features comfortable seating covered in warm gray leathers with white accents and dining-height tables – furniture highly conducive to light bites and cocktails. Silver-gray wooden tables and leather seating adorn the dining room space, and a special Chef’s table will offer an elevated view into the open kitchen. Each table is accented by adjustable lights flowing from the main chandelier. Large parties and private gatherings enjoy a dining area tucked away from the main dining room. A Truly Inspiring Sense of Arrival – The New Lobby at Grand Hyatt New York Signifying a true transformation from the moment of arrival, Bentel & Bentel is creating a new lobby space, set to debut in the spring of 2011, which will incorporate museum quality art. Two large sculptures will bring excitement to the space – one resting in the entrance water wall and another adjacent to the front reception area. A leather seating area will welcome guests to gather for impromptu meetings or to enjoy food from nearby Market. Softly lit screens will form a backdrop for the brightly lit guest check-in desk stations. Spanning across the lobby, columns will be bathed in a warm brown color and the ceiling lighting will transition from day to night, creating the natural colors of a sky overhead. Taking Events to the Next Level Gallery On Lex, an inventive new social catering event area will debuted in spring of 2011 in the space previously occupied by Commodore Grill. The 4,400 sq. ft. space will boast a central entry surrounded by artwork, leather furniture and a cream-colored stone floor. Not to be confused with a typical hotel meeting www.thehotelguide.com

NY room, the venue will feature flexible space that will flow into a central zone with wood floors and stone counters, allowing guests to socialize and interact with the hotel’s culinary team. The front area offers multi-functional seating for breakout meetings or pre-dinner events. Two “pavilions” within the space are clad in the tropical timber, wenge, and walnut woods with a rich colored striped carpet and wood floors, as well as a front wall configured of glass with sheer and blackout curtains. Meet Market: Innovative Grab-and-Go Reinventing Room Service A gourmet “grab-and-go” concept in the main lobby, Market offers the best of New York’s tastes and treats 24-hours-a-day to the Grand Central neighborhood. Market offers locally sourced essentials for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, including hot meals, sandwiches, beer and wine. Featured New York favorites include items from Roasting Plant, Tisserie, Chickalicious and Macaron Café NYC. The hotel continues to offer traditional room service, while this new food and beverage experience caters to the changing needs of today’s travelers. Guests who crave a quick, healthy meal when arriving from a late flight enjoy the ease of Market, as well as visitors seeking high-quality food choices in Midtown. The glowing blue columns and white tile cladding of Market complement the interiors of the lobby area, drawing guests across the generous lobby to this bustling new area. The color scheme creates a feeling of an exterior window wall beyond the lobby. Inside Market, the space features a floating concrete counter, while blackened steel stand-up tables offer space for quick bites under a metal ceiling lit with blue hues. Empire Ballroom Strikes Back The Empire Ballroom renovation kicked off Grand Hyatt New York’s transformation earlier this year and is again welcoming Presidents, royalty and celebrities alike. Originally built in 1917, the restoration of the Empire Ballroom, its storied history and prime location has made it one of the most desirable venues in the U.S. The 18,000 square foot space accommodates 100 to 1,500 guests and can be elegantly divided into five salons. Special touches of the Ballroom include metal grillwork reminiscent of the legendary windows in Grand Central Terminal and original tin tiling throughout, respecting and enhancing the historic nature of the venue. The spectacular chandeliers are comprised of 7,000 individual hand-blown pieces of art glass creating a “champagne cloud,” which gives the ballroom a sense of contemporary New York style. The resort’s dramatic and innovative architecture blends with the surrounding desert landscape. Stonecolored adobe-style structures are grouped in low-rise clusters throughout the property. Key West

A Team Cocktail Kind of Town

by: Lyndsey Huggins

t doesn’t get more Caribbean in the US than Key West. As you drive down the Keys from Miami you can start to feel yourself become more relaxed, you kick the shoes off for flip flops and turn Jimmy Buffett on the radio. The water is a beautiful shade of turquoise blue, the bridges that take you from island to island show that they have a story to tell and once you get to Key West your mind has escaped from reality. While there are many “must do” things in Key West like watch the sunset at Mallory Square, visit Hemingway’s mansion, get a picture at Southernmost Point and eat conch we’re not going to bore you with those. No, we’re gonna get right down to what we think is the most fun thing to do in Key West, bar hop! Duval Street is lined with bars and while we love many of the bars on Duval there are several off the beaten path that deserve a stop as well. So pour a cocktail and read on to find out Team Cocktail’s favorite bars in Key West.

I

1) Rum Bar - Rum Bar is on the south end of Duval and has one of the most extensive rum collections we’ve ever seen with more than 200 brands on the shelf! Bahama Bob, a Key West rum legend, whips up some of the tastiest rum drinks you’ll ever have. It’s a small bar, with only 10 seats, but that’s part of what makes it unique and one of our favorite spots. Tip: ask to try Bob’s Root Juice…if you dare! 2) Willie T’s - This open air bar features live music daily, good food & of course drinks. You can also leave your mark on Willie T’s by signing a dollar bill and plastering it wherever you can find a spot! Team Cocktail even has a dollar there! Tip: If you find the Team Cocktail dollar 36

bill you get a free Team Cocktail t-shirt! 3) Virgilios - Not a rum drinker or looking for something a little more classy? Well then a must stop is Virgilios, Key West’s premier martini bar. From the outside it might not look like much but the inside of Virgilios is classic, classy and relaxing! Enjoy one of their 10 oz martinis, which are delicious, and listen to some live music which they feature every night. Tip: Tell Pip hello from Team Cocktail! 4) Irish Kevin’s - This is one of the most popular bars in Key West and for good reason. No matter what time of day it is a party!! Grab a beer, a drink, a shot, whatever you choose but make sure to join in on the fun! Tip: We dare you to take a phone call in front of the musician. 5) Schooner Wharf - Looking to get off Duval Street and hang with the locals? This is the perfect place. The staff is great, it is always packed with locals and they have a great spot right on the water. After a few cocktails in this local favorite you’ll be canceling your flight home! Tip: Take the camera off from around your neck and just enjoy a night with the locals. Now that we’ve set you up with our 5 favorite bars in Key West, it’s time to book your flight, find an inn and get ready to drink some rum! Enjoy your trip to the Keys and remember to Travel Global, Drink Local! No matter where you go or what you do, just have fun and remember…Travel Global, Drink Local!
