A Bed of Roses

yler has long been known for the excitement and pageantry of the Texas Rose Festival. This year, the Tyler community will come together to offer a month of activities and workshops to celebrate the flower that put Tyler on the map through the 2nd annual Rose Season. Rose Season spans from October 7-23 with a myriad of attractions and activities every weekend. The most notable and historic of these activities is the 78th annual Texas Rose Festival. Texas Rose Festival takes place October 1315. Activities include the Texas Rose Festival Show, Texas Rose Festival Coronation, Texas Rose Festival Queen’s Tea, and of course the popular Texas Rose Festival Parade. Last year was the inaugural year for Rose Season in Tyler and was widely attended and applauded throughout the community. So much so that the organizers have chosen to keep Rose Season as an annual event and hope to continue to grow the activities and community involvement associated. In 2010, Rose Season brought an estimated economic impact to Tyler of over 2 million dollars. Events surrounding Texas Rose Festival in its first year brought into Tyler an estimated 20,000 tourists, in excess of those attending Texas Rose Festival Events. Rose Season was created to offer more options for tourists who not only wanted to experience the history of Texas Rose Festival, but also sample more other attractions which make Tyler unique. Texas Rose Festival In 1933, during the height of the Great Depression, a group of Tyler civic and community leaders decided to create a festival to showcase Tyler’s rose industry. Thanks to the Oil Boom, Tyler had been somewhat insulated from the reality much of the rest of the country was experiencing. Tyler had real cause to celebrate, so 20
was born the Texas Rose Festival known in the beginning as the Tyler Rose Festival. The annual festivities were quickly adopted and word of the elaborate gowns and awing roses spread statewide. As the years progressed, The Texas Rose Festival played host to multiple dignitaries, First Ladies, and future presidents and gained much national attention. ith so many beautiful hikes and drives, Fall is the perfect time to hit the trail or road in Colorado. There are some wonderful family-friendly hikes to explore some of the alpine lakes in the Rocky Mountains. Lily Pad Trail in Silverthorne is a 3.2 mile round trip hike that is great for young and old. On this hike you are following in the footsteps of early 19th century fur trappers. Along the way, you might see beavers, chipmunks, elk and even moose. The highlight is the two lakes – Lower Lily Pad Lake and Upper Lily Pad Lake. From mid-summer through fall the lily pads abound in the lakes, especially in Lower Lily Pad Lake. Hanging Lake was named a national natural landmark this year and it is one of Colorado’s most unusual lakes, located about 40 minutes west of Vail or 10 minutes east of Glenwood Springs. Parking is very limited so a tip is to get there by 8:30am or after 3:00pm. It’s a short steep trail so sneakers or hiking shoes are a must. It’s 1.2 miles up to the lake with an elevation gain of 936 feet. The trail is steepest near the top where you climb a stone staircase with a guardrail. The turquoise color to the lake is because of the travertine, which is a form of 26
limestone deposited by mineral springs. The lake was formed when a geological fault caused the lake bed to drop away from the valley floor above. The water flowing into the lake is called Bridal Veil Falls. Before heading back down take the short rocky trail to Sprouting Rock, which was formed from centuries of water dissolving a passage through the limestone to create a spectacular waterfall out of a sheer cliff wall. There’s no swimming or fishing but you can walk into the caves underneath the falls at Hanging Lake or Spouting Rock if you want to cool off. Near Aspen is the Maroon-Snowmass Trail. If you want to hike the whole thing, it’s an 11 mile hike over the saddle to Crested Butte. But you can do a shorter www.thehotelguide.com
hike to Crater Lake. Start at Maroon Lake, which was created by an Ice-age glacier. Most high altitude lakes were created that way. The hike from Maroon Lake to Crater Lake is about 1.5 miles. There are a few short steep inclines along the way but the views are worth it. You will get amazing views of the Maroon Bells, which are considered the most photographed peaks in Colorado. There are so many incredible drives to check out fall foliage. Here are a couple of the most popular: Guanella Pass Scenic and Historic Byway: From the historic town of Georgetown on I-70, take this rambling route south to find pockets of aspen and high-altitude nirvana. Highest elevation on Guanella Pass is 11,699 feet. The aspens are more prevalent on the southern side of the pass. Once you reach Grant, turn right on US 285 and take the highway for 15 minutes to the top of Kenosha Pass, where on the slopes that encircle South Park, the aspens thrive. Trail Ridge Road (US 34) through Rocky Mountain National Park: Take US 36 through Estes Park to the Rocky Mountain National Park. change quickly. Trail Ridge road peaks at 12,183 feet in elevation. You’ll exit the west side of the park and can continue US 34 to Grand Lake. Independence Pass (CO 82): From I-70 take US 24 west. You’ll pick up Independence Pass south ofLeadville. At Twin Lakes, you pick up Highway 82 toward Aspen. Is is beautiful drive through the San Isabel National Forest with picturesque views of the Sawatch Range, home to several of Colorado’s 54 14ers. This pass closes with the first heavy snowfall. Steamboat Springs (CO 40 West): Take I-70 west to Empire and exit onto US 40 West. On your way to Steamboat Springs, you drive through many scenic passes including Berthoud Pass, Muddy Pass, and Rabbit Ears Pass. If you want to check out a ride instead of a drive, then enjoy the leaves by train on the Pike’s Peak Cog Railway or The Royal Gorge Route Railroad.

Key West
A Team Cocktail Kind of Town

t doesn’t get more Caribbean in the US than Key West. As you drive down the Keys from Miami you can start to feel yourself become more relaxed, you kick the shoes off for flip flops and turn Jimmy Buffett on the radio. The water is a beautiful shade of turquoise blue, the bridges that take you from island to island show that they have a story to tell and once you get to Key West your mind has escaped from reality. While there are many “must do” things in Key West like watch the sunset at Mallory Square, visit Hemingway’s mansion, get a picture at Southernmost Point and eat conch we’re not going to bore you with those. No, we’re gonna get right down to what we think is the most fun thing to do in Key West, bar hop! Duval Street is lined with bars and while we love many of the bars on Duval there are several off the beaten path that deserve a stop as well. So pour a cocktail and read on to find out Team Cocktail’s favorite bars in Key West.

1) Rum Bar - Rum Bar is on the south end of Duval and has one of the most extensive rum collections we’ve ever seen with more than 200 brands on the shelf! Bahama Bob, a Key West rum legend, whips up some of the tastiest rum drinks you’ll ever have. It’s a small bar, with only 10 seats, but that’s part of what makes it unique and one of our favorite spots. Tip: ask to try Bob’s Root Juice…if you dare! 2) Willie T’s - This open air bar features live music daily, good food & of course drinks. You can also leave your mark on Willie T’s by signing a dollar bill and plastering it wherever you can find a spot! Team Cocktail even has a dollar there! Tip: If you find the Team Cocktail dollar 36
bill you get a free Team Cocktail t-shirt! 3) Virgilios - Not a rum drinker or looking for something a little more classy? Well then a must stop is Virgilios, Key West’s premier martini bar. From the outside it might not look like much but the inside of Virgilios is classic, classy and relaxing! Enjoy one of their 10 oz martinis, which are delicious, and listen to some live music which they feature every night. Tip: Tell Pip hello from Team Cocktail! 4) Irish Kevin’s - This is one of the most popular bars in Key West and for good reason. No matter what time of day it is a party!! Grab a beer, a drink, a shot, whatever you choose but make sure to join in on the fun! Tip: We dare you to take a phone call in front of the musician. 5) Schooner Wharf - Looking to get off Duval Street and hang with the locals? This is the perfect place. The staff is great, it is always packed with locals and they have a great spot right on the water. After a few cocktails in this local favorite you’ll be canceling your flight home! Tip: Take the camera off from around your neck and just enjoy a night with the locals.
