San Antonio Zoo

Celebrating 100 Years In 1914, Woodrow Wilson was the president of the United States, popular music was ragtime, jazz, and the blues, and we drove around in a “Tin Lizzie,” a Ford Model T touring car. 1914 was an exciting year in many regards, but it would come to be a monumental year for the San Antonio Zoo. That year, Colonel George W. Brackenridge deeded a scenic plot of land to the City of San Antonio for the public viewing of elk, buffalo, deer, several monkeys, two lions, and four bears. Thanks to the visionaries of that era, that small plot of land has grown to 56 acres and is home to over 9,000 animals of 750 species. They did well to preserve all that nature and the good will of Colonel Brackenridge had to offer. 100 YEARS OF TRANSFORMATION The San Antonio Zoo has experienced many exciting groundbreaking opportunities in its’ first 100 years. Just after the San Antonio Zoological Society was formed in 1928, the introduction of revolutionary cageless exhibits and rare animals quickly transformed the San Antonio Zoo into one of the leading zoos in the nation; a position it proudly maintains to this day. The zoo is a place where families come to relax and enjoy themselves, where memories are made, and where imaginations run wild. Where else can you see the world’s largest reptiles, hear the haunting calls of gibbons swinging high in the sky, watch an okapi pluck leaves with its foot-long tongue, or meet a hippo face to face? OVER A HALF A CENTURY From its work with whooping cranes that began in the 1950s, to a partnership with Texas Parks & Wildlife

I

in supporting the endangered Attwater’s prairie chicken in the 1990s, the zoo has an established history of Texas conservation. Overall, the zoo participates in over 230 endangered species programs and plays a major role in breeding endangered animals worldwide. GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS Today, new exhibits are just as groundbreaking as those unveiled in the 1920s. Consider the underwater viewing and immersive experience of Africa Live! Phase I, the lush vegetation and sky-high aviary of Africa Live! Phase II, or the spacious and natural habitat of Gibbon Forest. This year the Zoo launches Zootennial Plaza, which includes a one-of-akind, 50-foot carousel that displays meticulously handpainted animal figurines, such as a whooping crane, horned lizard, and even a Texas Jackelope. The plaza also boasts a beautiful, state-of-the-art restaurant, complete with an Executive Chef, a first for the San Antonio Zoo, and an elegant VIP room. WILD SINCE 1914 One hundred years later and looking into the future, the San Antonio Zoo provides the highest standard of care for its animal and plant collection, a diverse educational and high quality recreational experience, and all the resources at its disposal for conservation of the Earth’s flora and fauna. Natural Bridge Caverns

pick Texas’ Largest Underground Adventure s

A

fascinating trip awaits guests of NATURAL BRIDGE CAVERNS, the largest show cave in Texas. What makes the Discovery Tour so awe-inspiring? The caverns, located in the Texas Hill Country and minutes from San Antonio, contain cave formations that are centuries in the making and still growing today. In March of 1960, four college students from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio obtained permission to explore the area. Lured by an amazing 60-foot limestone bridge and a large sinkhole, the explorers made numerous attempts to find the large underground passages they theorized were there. On their fourth expedition, Orion Knox Jr. felt a cool draft from a rubble-filled crawlway. Such air currents often indicate the presence of additional rooms or passages. Upon clearing this 60foot crawlway, the explorers made their way through two miles of vast cavern passage before returning to the surface to tell the landowners of their amazing discovery. The discoverers knew immediately what an astonishing find they had made and the land owners decided to develop the first ½ mile, the most spectacular part of the caverns, for the enjoyment of guests from around the world. Natural Bridge Caverns’ Discovery Tour was developed with two main goals in mind: preservation of the cavern system and comfort of its guests. The result is one of the world’s premier show caverns. The Discovery was opened to the public on July 3, 1964 and dedicated by Texas Governor John B. Connelly as a “Jewel in the crown of Texas’ attractions.” Natural Bridge Caverns has also been designated a State Historical Site and a Registered National Natural Landmark.

Guided Tours Your guided tour, which takes approximately 75 minutes, will take you through vast underground rooms. Discover Sherwood Forest, the Castle of the White Giants and the Hall of the Mountain King, a room the size of a football field. Amazing delicate crystalline formations and gigantic stone monuments fill these beautiful underground chambers. Since Natural Bridge Caverns opened to the public, hundreds of thousands of guests from all over the world have enjoyed the Discovery Tour. You are invited to see this spectacular natural wonder, too. For more information, visit Natural Bridge Caverns online at www.naturalbridgecaverns.com.

TEXAS

Denton, Texas

McCutcheons Crown Horse Country

he day is blue sky and sun, early morning temps typical of Texas day. The north edge of Denton recedes in the rearview mirror and the road ahead dips and curves into rolling green terrain, lush after recent rains. Carefully painted wood, pipe and wire fences hem in wide pastureland on the left, the right, and beyond view far ahead. Ranchstyle houses dot hilltops clustered by even larger barns and multiple outbuildings. Horses graze and frolic completing the peaceful scene that is Denton County’s largest agricultural industry. Horse Country Denton city is just minutes out of sight, and we are in the heart of the North Texas Horse Country, home to more than 350 horse farms and 25,000 horses. Every equine breed and discipline is represented among these ranches making this the most diverse equine concentration in the world. A couple of miles across the Trinity River’s Elm Fork and Greenbelt Park, spreads Green Valley Ranch, a leading ranch in the discipline and breeding of equine reining horses. Just past its entrance, a country lane meanders north through smattering remnants of tiny Green Valley, population around 50 in its peak at the turn of the 20th century. Another green McCutcheon AquaTredexpanse stretches some 200 acres behind a gate announcing Tom McCutcheon Reining Horses. This is our destination today. A paved drive leads past a modest home to a large barn fronting a mammoth covered arena. Our small entourage enters the tall doorway and steps into a lofty breezeway. Stalls line both sides, great doors open at either end. Smells of leather, hay and horseflesh mingle on the cool, fresh air. A horse nearby neighs and several nuzzles poke out of stalls to scope out the new arrivals. Award-Winning The ranch headquarters is a mini museum showcasing scores of trophies, photographs, ribbons, and saddles, all telling the story of the famous McCutcheons and their globally renown reining empire. Tom McCutcheon was born into the performing horse business, his father and brothers trainers, as well. He was a member of the

2003 USA Reining Team, winner of the Team Gold Medal at the World Equestrian Games in Spain that year. He took the Individual Gold Medal at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky where he was also on the gold medal winning Team USA. He will represent Team USA again this September in the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France. Tom’s wife Mandy is a champion in her own right, inducted into the National Reining Horses Association Hall of Fame in 2011. She is the only woman and only non-professional reining athlete in the sport’s history to make the World Equestrian Reining team and surpass $2 million in earnings. Hard at Work Headquarters’ back wall is solid glass overlooking the arena where trainers are busy working out several steeds. One has her horse drilling tight circles. Around the arena’s edge, another is cantering, picking up speed before dashing into center ring in the famous crouched, sliding stop for which the sport is most known. Yet another is cooling down his mount to prevent sore muscles after a workout. Besides training and breeding, the McCutcheon Ranch is a premier Equine Rehabilitation Center and Spa. The ranch’s head therapist holds a woven lead for a honey-maned horse working out in the aquatred. Warm water up to his shoulders, his body moves methodically, his gait without stress on the underwater treadmill. Another therapist monitors the 35-degree saltwater bath for a huge black stallion soaking his joints, only his head visible above the bath’s walls. Back in the stalls, Gunners Special Nite shows his unique white face and translucent blues eyes. Tom’s mount in the 2010 gold medal win, this stud’s seed is most coveted among the five stallions standing now at McCutcheon’s, every purchaser hoping another whitefaced, blue-eyed foal will result. Hundreds of visitors to the North Texas Horse Country enjoy scenes like this on tours every year. It is one of our most important and impressive attractions. Behind every gate is something different from the farm across the fence. It is extraordinary and true to our brand: Denton. Original. Independent. www.DiscoverDenton.com.

Lone Star Court

Austin’s Authentic Americana

new upscale, retro-inspired, motor court concept is coming to Austin courtesy of the Valencia Group. Nostalgia will meet modern at the Lone Star Court, with an aesthetic that’s authentically Austin and Texas Hill Country from the art in the rooms to the unique outdoor environment. According to Doyle Graham, Jr., President and CEO of the Valencia Group, “This is the most exciting new concept in the hotel industry. Lone Star Court will be a 21st century re-interpretation of the nostalgic motor court. At the same time, it will capture the essence of Austin and the Texas Hill Country; it will be one of a kind and totally unique to Texas’ capital city.” True Texas Lone Star Court will have 123 retro-inspired guest rooms with high-tech amenities. True to Austin, Lone Star Court will feature live music by an outdoor fire pit, a dipping pool reminiscent of Hill Country swimming holes, and an onsite food trailer court. Lone Star Court will draw business as well as leisure travelers to its unique “ranch-tech” property, and the restaurant and bar will be a destination for Austinites as well as visitors. A Place to Meet The property will have approximately 2,000 square feet of interior meeting space, an outdoor covered pavilion of 1,600 square feet, and an adjacent open air lawn that adds 1,800 square feet to the total available meeting space. The Valencia Group Lone Star Court is a new concept created by Valencia Group, a Houston-based company known for its luxury independent Hotel Valencias in San Antonio and San

Jose, the Hotel Sorella CITYCENTRE in Houston and recently Hotel Sorella Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. Why the Vintage Concept? During the early days of auto tourism beginning in the mid 1940s, roadside campsites led entrepreneurs to create quaint, cabin-like places for travelers to stay. Simple cottage camps began to evolve into more sophisticated full-service motor courts, and the number of motels in America tripled to more than 60,000 by the 1960s. The new, more modern motor courts along great American highways featured “air cooled by refrigeration,” television, coin-operated radios, tiled bathrooms, easy chairs, and Serta Perfect Sleepers. After decades of booming business, mom-and-pop motels began to disappear in 1956 with the Federal-Aid Highway Act that funded construction of the interstate highway system. With little means to move their facilities or re-route traffic, these gems of the road gave way to corporate chains staking their claims along the new highways. Lone Star Court will take visitors back to the heyday of the roadside motor court experience, where guests can discover an era of authentic Americana along with modern amenities and the excitement of Austin. More Information To find out more about Lone Star Court, visit them online at www.lonestarcourt.com.

A Fairytale Family Getaway to San Francisco Bay

Featured Weekender

By: Christa Thompson, www.thefairytaletraveler.com

e wanted that last “hoorah”. We wanted to explore a place we had never seen, to go on one last adventure before school started and make one more memory before the grind of the morning rush and afternoon homework kicked in. We wanted fresh cool air, breathtaking scenery, elevation, the ocean, and wildlife -and we wanted it all to be wrapped around a city where we could wander the streets, take in the culture, learn something new, and find a kid-friendly evening adventure. Clearly this was a fairytale -and then we thought of San Francisco. Before long we were packing the truck and heading up the Pacific Coast Highway from Santa Barbara to San Francisco, “the City”. Destination San Francisco Famous for scenic beauty, cultural attractions, diverse communities and landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz, Chinatown, Union Square and much more, San Francisco wrapped in all its fog, is one of the most European of American cities. One we were sure to find a few good legends in, and even learn something new. The Journey is Just as Important as the Destination Now most commuters from Santa Barbara would take the five and a half hour short route to San Francisco by driving up the 101, but we aren’t “most people” -we are adventure hunters, nature lovers, and love the journey as much as the destination. So, we chose to take the Pacific Coast Highway -the world-famous State Route 1 that hugs the craggy cliffs of California’s coast along the wild waters of the Pacific Ocean. There was no turning back, we were in for a scenic journey along some of the most picturesque vistas in the world. We found our way to several stop offs where we took photos and stretched our legs. The views were far more

W

CA

incredible than anyone could have ever explained, including myself in this story. We chased each other through flower lined trails, hiked down cliffs, and marveled in the idea that we were surrounded by seamless beauty and nature. We spent most of the day taking our time -taking it in. In Carmel-by-the-Sea we found local wine and chocolate. In Half Moon Bay we explored a little fishing wharf and a beautiful seaside hotel called the Oceano Hotel & Spa; a place we certainly could’ve stayed for a while and just 35 miles south of San Francisco. The journey to San Francisco was an attraction in itself leaving us teeming with adventure and excited to get into the City -we had a surprise for our son. This was a special night for him. For the first time ever, we were staying in not just any “kid-friendly” hotel, we were staying at the Hotel Union Square which boasts a very special Kid’s Suite. Hotel Union Square Kid’s Suite The very special Kid’s Suite at Hotel Union Square in the heart of San Francisco is fitted for children and parents. This enormous half grown-up half kid room is beyond complete with flat screen TV’s, a child-themed play area, Nintendo Wii, a computer, books, toys, and colorful decor inviting your child to play on their side of the room while you enjoy a view of Union Square in the heart of San Francisco from your swank king sized bed. This is the Holy Grail of family-friendly. Not to mention the hotel was super posh, staffed by exceptionally friendly people, and located in one of the most convenient parts of San Francisco. We were so elated with the digs, we didn’t want to leave! We decided to order in and enjoy our sweet space before it was time to hop on the vintage inspired F-Line to Fisherman’s Wharf for the Alcatraz Evening Tour. Afterall, this was an adventure and just because the sun was setting it didn’t mean we had to send our mini adventurer to bed. Besides, what better way is

28 www.thehotelguide.com

there to catch the sunset than from a cruise to one of the most notorious prisons in the world! Tip: Taking the F-Line to Fisherman’s Wharf is a great way to get to the Alcatraz Evening Tour, but you’ll have to take a cab back if you don’t want to walk. The FLine runs but it doesn’t always stop. Evening Alcatraz tickets sell out months in advance. Be mindful of this tour as it is very much in demand. Alcatraz Evening Tour Our evening was filled with adventure as we learned all about the history of Alcatraz and the legendary prisoners that were once there. Night had fallen, the air was cool, and we took to the street for a relaxing trek back to Union Square. There’s something about the City at night that adds a new ambiance. Day Two We had one more day in San Francisco. For once my son wanted to stay in the room, he was smitten by the Kid’s Suite -but we had something else in mind and we set off for Fisherman’s Wharf again to Ride the Duck for a quick tour of San Francisco and a mini-cruise all in one. We learned about the different neighborhoods in the City, the heritage and a few tourist attractions. It was a great way to sample San Francisco and wait for it, the vehicle turns into a boat! Fisherman’s Wharf was a perfect place for the Ride the Duck experience and gave us easy access to the Dungeon, Explorwww.thehotelguide.com

atorium, and the California Academy of Sciences where we spent our day learning about legends, history, and even seeing Skulls! The San Francisco Dungeon Originating from the U.K. the San Francisco Dungeon was a great way to explore famous legends of California’s Gold Rush, Barbary Coast gangs and Alcatraz prisoners. This one-hour walk theatrical storytelling attraction was complete with 360-degree sets, actors, special effects, and an underground boat ride.

Exploratorium We loved the hands-on experience at Exploratorium. This was a great way for my son to let loose, expand his mind, and learn about the world around him. California Academy of Sciences At the California Academy of Sciences we explored the Skulls exhibit exploring the science of vertebrate animals, how they lived, died and evolved. From sea lion skulls to the “bone cleaners”, the Skulls exhibit was exciting and educational, and a perfect way to wrap up the last day of our Fairytale Getaway to San Francisco Bay. We prevailed victorious, our mission complete. We found everything we were looking for and we did it in two days. No pressure, no schedule, just the open road, the breathtaking views, a city filled with culture, stories and education, and the best Kid’s Suite a kid could hope for. The only downside was checking out. 29

Universal Orlando Resort’s All New Diagon Alley

Magical Imagination

FL

By: Christa Thompson, www.thefairytaletraveler.com

all me spoiled but there are few things that will get me to arrive at a theme park in the middle of summer in Florida. Nothing is worse than 98 degrees rolled in cattle drives of rude and rather sloppy humans. For travelers like me, it’s a vacation nightmare. So what on earth would possibly land me at Universal Studios Orlando smack in the middle of August with an ear to ear grin on my face? There I was, at the all new Diagon Alley going against every rule in my theme park book, and I couldn’t have been happier. No it wasn’t the Butterbeer ice cream, even though it’s quite possibly is the best thing I’ve ever consumed, it was something far more special than that. One look at the newest attraction at Universal Studios and you will be enamored. From the cobblestone streets to the fire-breathing dragon commanding your attention from atop Gringotts Bank, every single detail of Diagon Alley is remarkably recreated right from the books and movies. Having collaborated with J.K. Rowling and film production designers, Universal Studios created not only the replica of Diagon Alley, King’s Cross and Leicester Square, but they proactively sought design features to implemented policies that keep traffic flowing ensuring a special experience is avail-

able to guests. We experienced this first hand when my son was “chosen” at Ollivanders Wands to have his wand magically selected for him. A truly touching experience for the Harry Potter megafan mom such as myself. Which leads me to the complete remastering of this article. Experience the Magic I could write for you, another guide to Diagon Alley -but you can find 2,000 words of that here. Instead, I want to share with you the magic. Not that Disney magic, the magic of movies coming to life, the magic of standing in the middle of a scene, the magic of watching your children glow with wonder as they make

www.thehotelguide.com

their way through the enchanted streets of Diagon Alley with their interactive wands in tow. I want to remind you, because us adults we so easily forget -this is a magic that creates a spark, one little spark that illuminates the mind. That’s all it takes to awaken the imagination. I want to dig much deeper here, past the entertainment, past the merchandise, and past the travel tips. I want to tell you just how much of an impact Universal Studios had on my evolving imagination and how very special it was to see that seed planted in my own son as he explored new, bigger and better movie magic with Diagon Alley. Favorite Things One of my favorite things in Diagon Alley is the interactive wands, and no they aren’t paying me to say that. Hands down, the interactive wands are the biggest catalyst of imagination in all of the Harry Potter lands. You get to bounce around, awesome map in hand leading you to find special spell locations. With the flick of your magic wand, you make things move right before your eyes. Another really cool spot for the imagination is Knockturn Alley. This dark, cool, and creepy corner of Diagon Alley really makes you wonder what lurks www.thehotelguide.com

around the bend. It’s ominous design is flawlessly created, right down to the talking shrunken heads. Finally, the talking Goblins in Gringotts Exchange and in Gringotts Bank seem beyond their years in animatronic technology. The Gringotts Exchange Goblin will answer your questions, no matter what you ask! If that’s not magic made for a kid’s imagination, I don’t know what is. Watching my son wave his wand as he whooshed around bouncing his feet from one magic spell point to the next, seeing his eyes widen as a Goblin answered his questions, and chasing him through the dark Knockturn Alley -that was indeed magic. That is exactly what Universal Studios is all about, and why on a hot summer day I found myself standing in a cattle drive of people with an ear to ear grin. 37

Best Historic Hotels

California’s Wild West

By: Christa Thompson, www.thefairytaletraveler.com

great way to wrap up summer is by taking the family on a wild west adventure through California’s Gold Country. From Placerville, a historic gold mining town just miles from the first gold discovery site, to Groveland minutes from the world-famous Yosemite National Park -California is teeming with adventure, breathtaking landscape and hands on history. Check out my top three choices for a familyfriendly wild west weekend.

A

The Historic Cary House Hotel, Placerville - The Cary House Hotel is legendary and has seen some of history’s most notable names. opened in 1857 by William Cary this then three-story hotel had 77 luxurious rooms. Only the wealthiest of people would stay here from famous politicians to gold striking miners. The Cary House Hotel was suited for people with money. With guest book signatures by Mark Twain and Buffalo Bill. Today, the Cary House sits with four stories and 40 rooms. If you stay at the Historic Cary Hotel, you’d be adding yourself to the guest list after legends like Buffalo Bill, Black Bart (a famous stagecoach robber), Mark Twain, Ulysses S. Grant, Elvis and many more. www.caryhouse.com The Groveland Hotel, Groveland - Situated just miles from the entrance to the world-famous Yosemite National Park is the tiny and charming historic town of Groveland, home to the Groveland Hotel. This historic building

sits next to California’s oldest saloon and is a popular stopping point for travelers today. Its vintage decor and comfortable rooms really provide a historic ambiance. With a full service casual yet fine dining restaurant, outdoor dining courtyard, saloon and massive award-winning wine selection, this is a great place to stay if Yosemite is your destination. www.groveland.com The City Hotel, Columbia State Historic Park - The only thing missing from this historic hotel is the dirt road. The City Hotel sits on Main Street in the Columbia State Historic Park, a living museum of California’s Gold Country and American Wild West. This is one of the most pristinely preserved working heritage parks I have ever explored, and bam smack in the middle of it is the City Hotel, a fully operating historic hotel, part of the park itself. The staff, like all of the staff in the park, are dressed in time-period clothing and all of the furniture antique. If you really want to get a feel for the “way it was” this is your place. www.parks. ca.gov/columbia 41
