Enjoy creek views, open fields and dense woods, bluffs, hills and long straightaways -- nature at its finest! Dogs are welcome, just make sure to keep them on a leash. Country backroads with smoking barns. Even Tennessee’s fifth-largest city with a population of more than 200,000 (total county) still offers plenty of rural highways and backroads. Fields are being harvested and tobacco barns can still be found firing the crop that made Clarksville one of the wealthiest cities in the nation in the mid19th century. You can learn about how the tobacco trade influenced Clarksville’s history at the Customs House Museum and Fort Defiance Civil War Park. Oktoberfests. That’s right, “fests” plural. First is the Wags and Wings Family Fun & Oktoberfest September 28-29 at the Clarksville Regional Airport. A portion of this

can be tough when you start to take in all the factors. The course condition and character, the service the facility provides, the company you are with and how you’re playing for the day just to name a few. The list is endless and every golfer has different values. For some, it might take place at their local country club, playing with their favorite foursome early on a Saturday morning before the dew fully lifts. Others might judge a great golf experience by the competition it brings and how they stack up. But one factor that all golf enthusiasts can relate to is the feeling of exploration. It is that sense of adventure that teases golfers’ imaginations and fuels the desire for epic golf trips. Have you felt that urge for an adventure lately? If so, we have one place in mind that will not only provide an amazing golf adventure but might redefine the way you rank your next golf experience. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. The history of Bandon Dunes is packed into the last 20 years but you wouldn’t guess that when stepping foot on property. The old world feel and tribute to “Golf as it was meant to be” is noticed around every corner. First opening in 1999, Bandon Dunes is perched on a bluff high above the Pacific Ocean. enthusiast with that passion for adventure. In 2020, their highly anticipated 5th golf course, the Sheep Ranch is due to open with rave reviews. boutique hotel, attracts visitors from around the country and the world when they visit Virginia’s beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Since the property first opened in November 2015, it has been featured in multiple national publications, including Southern Living magazine. The hotel has become well known for its “Keeping Room” library and the uniqueness of its history and design. Then and Now... Hotel Laurance was originally founded in 1883 when the proprietor, Joseph Parkinson, named the hotel after his wife, Laura. Today Hotel Laurance proudly honors its historic roots with original exposed brick accents, carefully curated artifacts, and of course, its namesake. The hotel is now a newly renovated boutique hotel with 12 luxury guest suites and chic décor which tastefully showcase the “historic grace meets modern elegance” aesthetic of the property. With no two rooms alike, each has its own unique personality and design, providing guests with a new experience with each visit. The suites are designed with a “home away from home” feel in mind as most of the rooms feature full kitchens, sitting areas, and bedrooms. Each room has a private bath and amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi and smart TVs. Hotel Laurance also features two stunning event spaces which are perfect for intimate weddings, rehearsal dinners, milestone birthdays and anniversaries,

and retreats. Award-Winning Boutique Hotel Since its opening, Hotel Laurance has been featured in Washingtonian magazine, forbes.com, Southern Living magazine, and Conde Nast Traveler. Washingtonian listed Hotel Laurance as one of the best places to stay in the Shenandoah Valley and praised the hotel for its décor which “sport subway tiles, hardwood plank floors, distressed furniture, and designer details such as busts and golden sconces that hark back to its origins.” Forbes.com recommends Hotel Laurance as the only place to stay when visiting the world-famous Luray Caverns. Hotel Laurance introduced the increasingly popular boutique hotel market into the area and continues to boost tourism to the area with an increase of travelers from outside of Virginia and from outside of the country thanks to its coverage in the media. The uniqueness of the property and its exquisite interior design have redefined the standard of lodging in the area. Hotel Laurance aims to be the premier destination for visitors to the Shenandoah Valley for years to come. Visit: www.HotelLaurance.com.

PGA NATIONAL RESORT

world-class golf experience he PGA National Resort & Spa is a world-class golf, spa, vacation and meeting destination. The legendary resort is a AAA Four Diamond hotel featuring 90 holes of championship golf on five courses; 40,000-square-foot European Spa with 32 treatment areas and exclusive “Waters of the World” outdoor mineral pools; superlative 33,000-square-foot health and racquet club with 18 Har Tru tennis courts (11 lit for night play); 39,000 square feet of selfcontained conference and meetings space; and nine on-site restaurants and lounges. GOLF EXPERIENCE Tee off on any of the resort’s five award-winning golf courses: The Champion, The Palmer, The Fazio, The Squire and The Estates. The recently-renovated Jack Nicklaus-designed Champion layout features the notorious “BearTrap” – a series of three demanding holes that are often considered the toughest stretch in the game. PGA TOUR players, fans and guests will discover significant changes to The Champion Course at the Honda Classic following a comprehensive renovation by Jack Nicklaus and his design company. Most notable are the removal of Palmetto palms on the right side of No. 1 and left side of No. 9. One-third of an acre (14,400 sq. ft.) was also recaptured on the putting surfaces, returning them to the native design Jack Nicklaus and his team implemented 16 years ago.

T

The green complexes on The Champion were re-built, shaped and grassed with Tif-Eagle Bermuda. This results in seamless transitions from green surrounds to putting surfaces and tighter relationships with respect to greenside bunkers. The changes allow for consistency in a variety of weather conditions and make one of the true “bucket list” courses in the game even more compelling. The layout reopened last November to rave reviews. PGA National provides numerous golf services and facilities including the David Leadbetter Golf Academy and David Pelz Scoring Game School for individual instruction and group clinics; Every Ball Counts – the world’s first science-based, statistics-driven training system for golf improvement at its off-site Estates Course; three practice facilities, providing over 150 stations for long- and short-game tune-ups: and state-of-the-art, and Cool Club offering PGA TOUR level club fitting. OREGON’S ADVENTURE COAST

a food revolution & more By Janice Langlinais

here is a food revolution happening on Oregon’s Southern Coast. When I first arrived here, fresh fish was readily available, but most restaurants fried it, along with “chips” for your typical fish & chips meal. Don’t get me wrong, those fish & chips were probably the best I’d ever tasted because the fish came straight off the commercial fishing docks in the quaint village of Charleston, just 10 miles west of Coos Bay. Fresh Foods Over the past few years, though, restaurants and food purveyors have moved to a more healthy, farm to fork menu, utilizing the freshest produce and berries from local farmers. These creative chefs are finding new and inventive ways to pair fish, meats, and seasonal produce into delectable dishes. These young entrepreneurs love sharing these new culinary styles, flavors and fresh philosophies with their diners. Adventures Abound I love to share my destination with friends and visitors. Recently, I took a few new friends on a day filled with adventure and some of the best eats around. We started our day off with breakfast at Noster Kitchen in Coos Bay’s downtown. We were delighted to find a menu filled with bowls comprised of fresh, organic ingredients along with a hearty serving of steel cut oats or eggs. My personal favorite is the Sweetie Pie, which tops steel cut oats with apples, coconut, cinnamon, chia seeds

T

and brown sugar. It is a great way to start a day filled with adventures. From Hiking to Comfort Food... After a hike along the ruggedly beautiful coastline between Sunset Bay State Park and Cape Arago State Park on the Cape Arago Loop outside of Charleston, it was time for lunch. A trip into North Bend provided us with some delicious options – vegan fare at The Tin Thistle Café or culinary-institute-inspired comfort foods at Wildflour Café. It was a tough decision! We opted for Wildflour Café and

some of the best sourdough bread we have had on any coast. The turkey, cranberry, brie panini was a flavor sensation and the lemonlavender cupcake polished off the meal nicely. Sand Dunes The afternoon was spent careening over 500 foot tall sand dunes of Oregon’s National Sand Dunes Recreation Area. We opted for the tour with Spinreel Dune Buggy & ATV Rentals. Having a knowledgeable driver ensured we not only had a great time, but we were shown some of the most amazing sights from the tops of dunes we might not have found on our own. At the top of one dune, we could see for miles across the Pacific Ocean and then we took a narrow path through more dunes that led us to the beach where the Pacific lapped at our ATV’s fat wheels. What a ride! And finally dinner. We had so many options to choose from. Fresh fish tacos from Shark Bites Café in downtown Coos Bay or woodfired gourmet pizza at Front Street Provisioners or the eclectic take on pub food at Coos Bay’s only craft brewery, 7 Devils Brewery. We opted for 7 Devils as there was also live music on the outside patio, which topped off our day of adventure and amazing food finds perfectly.

17

Replete and rather tired from our day of adventure on Oregon’s Adventure Coast, we said our fond farewells and I look forward to the next time I get to share my small slice of heaven with visitors from near and far. More Info... Before you go, visit www.OregonsAdventureCoast.com for lodging, dining and adventure options. Stop in at any of the three Visitor Information Centers for the best advice on where to eat and what to do. Coos Bay Visitor Center, 50 Central Avenue, open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 11am-3pm, seasonally on Sun 10am2pm. North Bend Visitor Center, 1380 Sherman Ave, open daily 9am-5pm. while enjoying a once-in-a-lifetime experience. One of those opportunities is coming to Scottsdale’s Starfire Golf Club Nov. 15, 2019 when it plays host to the 9th Annual Driving Out Domestic Violence Celebrity Gala and Golf Tournament. Each foursome teeing off in the morning is paired with a current or former professional athlete and the night closes out just as glitzy, with a Celebrity Gala catered by Dominick’s Steakhouse at Ross Aviation in the Scottsdale Airpark. Proceeds will benefit Chrysalis’ domestic violence programs, which serves more than 1,400 people in Arizona each year. To participate in the tournament, visit Driving Out Domestic Violence. At Grayhawk Golf Club’s Quill Creek Café, the popular Wednesday Night Party is soon to return to the patio. Starting Sept. 25 and running through Nov. 27, guests can enjoy live acoustic performances by local artists from 5-8:30 p.m. The parties also include outstanding appetizer and drink specials on the restaurant’s most popular items, such as the Grande Margaritas, craft beers, prime rib and chicken sliders. When it comes to putting interesting new twists on the “auld game,” no one does it better than the Boulders Resort & Spa Scottsdale. Starting this fall, the resort’s Birdies, Birds & Beyond experience will combine top-notch golf instruction with one-of-a-kind nature experience. The program begins with a morning of golf instruction followed by a guided tour via golf cart of the Boulders’ two stunningly beautiful golf courses. Along the way, guests will encounter and learn about the indigenous wildlife – ranging from javelina and desert cottontails to mule deer and elusive bobcats – that call the courses home. Cameras are encouraged. For a different kind of on-course experience, guests can opt for the Boulders Golf Club’s new Golf Fitness Starter Program, taught by LPGA Professional and Certified Fitness Trainer, Nicole Cavarra. The program helps players improve their golf game by increasing their flexibility, strength and biomechanics. It also teaches techniques to improve functional motion and burn more calories while on the golf course. Additionally, students receive a customized Golf Fitness Starter Program to take home, enabling them to continue to make progress. To learn more about both these programs, contact the instruction team at the Boulders Golf Club. For more information about Scottsdale’s golf scene, visit ExperienceScottsdaleGolf.com.

MEXICO CITY MARKETS

locals guide for buying fresh by: Sara Quiriconi exico may be better known for its tacos, tequilas and tamales. However, just as fresh and local are the foods from the outdoor mercaditos. What is a mercadito? At these markets, you can expect to find anything and everything from clothing, sweets, cables for your phone, to fruits, herbs and handmade guacamole. Mexico City, the country’s capital, host an array of markets throughout the week. Sunday mornings are particularly special, with many families working together, others coming from church, and gringos like myself, pouring to the streets with pesos in hand to do their compras, or, shopping. Want to find the freshest of fresh fruits you can find in this concrete jungle? Then, skip the grocery stores, and head to the markets. Here are 7 tips to help you shop like a local while exploring the mercaditos in Mexico City: 7 Tips To Shop the Local Mercaditos of Mexico:

M

1. Bring Pesos: There are no credit cards accepted here, and any U.S. dollar or foreign currency typically isn’t accepted, nor will warrant you the correct change. There are ATMs on the streets you can use; however, expect to pay a pretty penny in bank fees. Plan ahead before arriving, getting some pesos back on your home turf. 2. BYOB (bring your own bags): Plastic waste is a global issue, and there’s no shortage of plastic bags being

used in these markets. Why? They’re cheap, easy and disposable. Bring a reusable bag that folds up to keep always in your carry-on and bring with you anywhere you travel. The locals and the planet thank you. 3. Pass on Samples: Unless it has a peel like a banana, pass. The outside skins of the fruits and veggies aren’t washed (promise you) and if you have a sensitive stomach like myself (gringos!), one trial bite can cause you three days of travelers’ diarrhea. Wash what you buy thoroughly once you’re back at the apartment or hotel, then enjoy (safely)! 4. Don’t haggle or bargain: While it is a market, it’s not the price is right. Not all prices are marked; however, it’s good manners not to argue with the pricing. Nod kindly and accept. If it’s really more than you wanted to pay, simply say with honesty and kindness, “Disculpe, pero, no gracias,” and move on. 5. Leave your “best” at home: The big rings, your

fancy watch, the designer handbag, and all of your traveler cash — just leave it back at the hotel or apartment and go basic. While the markets are safe, being “local” isn’t about showing off your high-end goods. Plus, you can be upcharged for your produce if it appears you have it. And, in that case, definitely don’t bargain (see #4). 6. Go deep beyond the perimeters: It can be easy to shop what’s just on the outside stands. However, the further in you’re willing to explore, the better prices, and even better discoveries you may find. Plus, travel is all about discovery, so why play safe with just skirting what’s on the outside? 7. Talk with the merchants: A mercadito goes way beyond your typical grocery store. Here, you can talk to, converse and ask their expertise for what you’re looking for. Want a papaya today? They won’t sell you something that isn’t ripe for now. Craving an aguacate to have with your breakfast mañana? Get ready for the best avocado toast you’ve ever had on both sides of the border. They know their product, and what they’re doing. Ask, and trust! Now that you’ve got the basic buying tips down, it’s

time to get you prepared with the language that will help you along the way. Just in case, Spanish isn’t your first, second, or any one of your languages. Phrases to Get you Started 1. ¿Cuánto cuesta este? How much is this? 2. Para hoy/mañana. For today/tomorrow. 3. ¿Cómo se llama esta fruta/verdura? What do you call this fruit/vegetable? 4. Tengo una bolsa, ¡gracias! I have a bag, thanks! 5. Me gustaría un poco mas/menos. I would like a bit more/less. 6. Disculpe, pero, no gracia. Sorry, but no thanks. 7. Muchas gracias, ¡buen fin! Thank you so much, have a great weekend! A basic rule of thumb when it comes to shopping in any foreign country: being kind and a smile go a long way. Traveling has that magical ability to bring us all closer together in a single human race called kindness. For more information on Sara, you can find her at www.LiveFreeWarrior.com

REPLENISH ATX

self-care when traveling elf-caring while traveling can be difficult as we are ripped from everything in our comfy, predictable bubbles and placed in a new environment full of potential and new experiences! Although all this “newness can be invigorating, we cannot take for granted our need to for self-care and the soothing comforts of home. As we take flight into the magical bliss of vacation and travel, finding ways to ground ourselves and practice mindfulness can be a great act of self care. A Piece of Home This may seem silly but bringing a small piece of home that is part of your daily ritual can be incredibly grounding and soothing to your psyche as you venture into the unknown. This may be a pillow case, your favorite face towel, photograph, or a meaningful item given to you by a loved one. This grounding object may bring great comfort and solace if a moment of home-sickness or disconnect arises. Try Something New Seemingly the antithesis of the previous tip: pushing yourself to try something new can bring about a surge of empowerment, self-esteem, and meaning to your trip. This may mean trying a new food, going on a thrilling excursion, or simply striking up a meaningful conversation with a stranger. Pushing past feelings of fear or discomfort or striking an item off our proverbial bucket list may allow us to return home with a new sense of accomplishment and self worth. Ritual Retention Sometimes we get in a funk when we travel because we

S

lose our cathartic rituals that usually take up vital space in our daily lives. Practicing mindfulness around continuing these rituals can allow us to nourish our minds and bodies and maintain a felt safety in our new location. If you wake up every morning and do the same stretches, do them in your hotel room too! If you wind down at night with your favorite decaf tea, make sure you pack a few in your luggage so you can feel connected to your grounding rituals no matter when you lay your head that evening. Create Your Own Adventure You know the familiar shelves of vibrant activity pamphlets that scream at you in the Hotel Lobby? Sure these are packed with fun tourist-y things to do but you can also create your OWN ADVENTURE. Look up the most beautiful park and have a tea party. Bring a great novel to a nearby rooftop lounge. Find a way to combine the local scenery with something you already love to do. This can be a great way to combine new exciting experiences with old comforting ones. Ultimately, practicing mindful self-care while traveling comes down to planning, implementation, and self reflection. If we remain cognizant of our own needs: (physical, mental, emotional) as we trek to new thrilling settings, we remain grounded in who we are and obtain a newfound ability to truly benefit from these experiences. ITALY

franciacorta berlucchi wines by: Carla Pallares, www.yemayaswimwear.com

ust one hour east of Milan is Franciacorta, a region infused with cultural significance and a thriving wine making tradition. I would say it’s Italy’s best kept wine secret. The Franciacorta region is known for ‘metodo classico’ sparkling wine using Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Bianco which is the traditional method for producing this wine. Wine undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle to produce bubbles. This method tends to be more labor and resource intensive due to more storage capability and man-power needs. The first official Franciacorta sparkling wine was produced in 1961. This abundant area quickly established itself as one of the country’s premiere wine regions thanks to its high-quality cultivation and precise production standards. Berlucchi is Franciacorta’s largest winery and produces over 4 million bottles per year and please note it’s where the sparkling wine was first invented. As many of my friends and family know, I am the biggest sparkling wine fan, visiting this wonderful place was a memorable one for me. This family owned winery is one of a kind and I absolutely recommend visiting this place if you ever have the chance. With so much beautiful history about the family, vineyard and science of it all, Berlucchi is a must on your

next Italian adventure.

J

History: Back in the 1950’s, Mr. Berlucchi, a very wealthy landowner hired the talented Franco Ziliani to improve the quality of one of the most popular table wines at that time. Ziliani had traveled to various places in Champagne and noted that the Franciacorta region had a very similar climate and growing conditions. He decided to take a chance at making sparkling wine in the classic traditional style. After experimenting and perfecting, the first batch of Franciacorta bottles were produced in the early 1960’s. It is now managed by Ziliani’s three children who sustain to push their dad’s history. Ziliani’s children continue to promote Franciacorta as a global wine destination, reinforcing the environmental sustainability that they are known for and sharing it globally with all of us. Method: The technique and science used to make each and every bottle of wine is truly remarkable. Every grape is hand-picked into boxes and are then brought to the press house. Then, they are separated into equal lots according to the grape mixture, vineyard and its specific character-

37

istics. Next, they are transferred into inclined presses which produces a very slow and precise pressure. Following this, the wine goes through a maturation process. Finally, they rest in steel or oak and each and every single one is analyzed and tasted to decide if it’s exactly up to standards for sale and distribution. Tour: The winery guided tour is a definite must in my book if you are in or close to Northern Italy. I learned so much during the tour that I never would have known about it if I did not visit this wine region. The story and history of the Berlucchi family, to where they are now and how far its come is extraordinary. From the kindness of the staff, to the gorgeous grounds and history, you will want to take a whole suitcase full of wine back with you. After a detailed and memorable tour, you can expect an amazing tasting and salud of award winning wines combined with high quality meats and cheeses. At the conclusion of the experience, you’ll find yourself in a stylish wine shop where you can purchase some of your favorites from the day. They even make it easy for you to ship your wines back to your home regardless of where that might be. Every wine/ champagne lover should make the trip to Berlucchi to taste for themselves. It’s such a charming short ride from

Milan, I definitely say to put it on top of your itinerary. It was so incredible to feel so remote yet be so close to Milan, one of my favorite cities in Italy. I was also very happy to have had this great experience with my family but can definitely see myself coming here again with some friends or that special someone. It’s that kind of place. A very special place. If you are looking to book a tour or know more go here.
