Pedrotti’s North Wind Ranch Celebrating the Spirit of Texas

areback bronco riding, barrel racing, bull riding, and calf scrambles are staples of the rodeo scene, but the action is not limited to the dusty Texas plains, far from your reach. If you follow the paved path just outside of Loop 1604 on Hausman Road, you unearth for a real Texas treat. Some Great History Pedrotti’s North Wind Ranch is the iconic San Antonio event center that carries a history as big as the Lone Star State. Owner Louie Pedrotti and his team of a skilled event planners, culinary experts, and managers continue to blaze a trail that they started three decades ago. From its simple beginnings as a restaurant and catering company in 1971, the Pedrotti’s brand has evolved into one of the Alamo City’s definitive event destinations. Starting with a catering truck and a modest kitchen, the Pedrottis ran their off-premise catering business for 24 years before expanding and purchasing land. In 1995, the company staked its claim to the 25-acre plot that serves as its current home. It was a transition that gave life to a host of new developments at the company. Two of the first facilities to open at the newly acquired location included the “Shooting Star,” a 12,000 square foot building with no floor or heat and limited air conditioning, and the “Pedrotti’s Rodeo Arena.” In 2000, the growth continued with three additional facilities – the “Brokemill,” the “Patio Room,” and the “Chuckwagon.” The Pedrottis added the spacious 24,000 square foot facility, “Lone Oak” in 2004, followed by the purchase of 20 additional acres in 2008. List of Great Clients Presently, Pedrotti’s has five event center facilities, in addition to the rodeo arena, all of which are heated and air-conditioned. From a floorless, open space and dirt arena, Pedrotti’s has grown by leaps and bounds. Today, the ranch hosts large-scale events for groups siz20

ing anywhere from 200 – 2,000. They work with major conventions with guests coming from across the country, weddings, holiday events, and other corporate banquets for the likes of H.E.B., Nation Wide Insurance, and Eva Longoria Parker’s nonprofit organization, Eva’s Heroes. “It’s a pretty long way to travel,” said Louie Pedrotti, “It’s been a lot of fun on the way, and it’s also been a lot of work.” Weddings too... Recently, Pedrotti’s entered the wedding market. When Louie and Sue’s son, Anthony, joined the team in 2007 as co-director of marketing, Pedrotti’s hosted only a handful of weddings each year. With Anthony’s arrival, and the expertise of co-director of marketing Norma Diaz, the company moved to aggressively alter and adjust itself to meet the needs of brides, grooms, and their guests, and create a wedding wonderland. It was a decision that was met with success – wedding bookings have tripled and clients are excited about the service. “We took the approach to enhance one of our facilities to make it a little more elegant,” said co-director of marketing Anthony Pedrotti, “Every bride- and groom-tobe wants to have a little bit of Texas flavor to their wedding in Texas, so we really hit the nail on the head – we combine glamorous elegance with some Texan flair.” While the brides are booking at record pace, the Pedrottis continue to emphasize the importance of honesty and dedication, providing each client with the event of their dreams. For Pedrotti’s, that is what it’s all about at the end of the day. “Every event is different, and every client is different. You have to stay on your toes to make sure you take care of every need,” said Sue Pedrotti, “It is very interesting putting all the details together for an event on paper. Then seeing it all happen right in front of you. It is like putting together a puzzle” For more information on Pedrotti’s North Wind Ranch, visit www.pedrottis.com or call 210.695.3533. www.thehotelguide.com

other surprise celebrity guests. “I’ve had the good fortune of performing in Las Vegas for more than 25 years, and it has always been a dream of mine to own my own comedy club in the entertainment capital of the world… but Dubai won’t have me,” Garrett quipped. “I am humbled to be able to bring my stand-up friends and colleagues to what I believe will be the best comedy room in Las Vegas.” Featuring comedy seven nights a week, the show times will be Sunday through Thursday at 8 p.m., with two shows on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Big Plans Coming... In December, the Las Vegas Mob Experience is unveiled and will use the latest in “interactive entertainment technology” to re-create the rise and fall of organized crime in Las Vegas. Deanna Barrett

Å Journey to Turkey and So much More

by: Deanna Barrett

hether it is in life, love or travel, I live for the experience. Even in the daily mundane, I try to appreciate the experiences of the day. So imagine my joy when my husband and I were offered the experience to cruise first class around the Mediterranean and visit four countries on one of the top five cruise lines in the world. In my mind, that was a whole lot of experience just waiting for me to discover. The Journey Begins... Due to the national strike in Greece, our journey began with our arrival in Athens, Greece from Houston, Texas one day later than planned. Though jet-lagged and disappointed I was not getting to visit the Parthenon, I didn’t let that get me down. After all, I can sleep when I’m dead and besides, this just gave me one more reason to visit again. But I digress. Once we arrived in Athens, we were whisked to our waiting ship. The Regent Seven Seas Mariner is a stately, first-class cruise ship with a friendly staff that greeted us with champagne and immediately took us to our accommodations. A luxurious, spacious suite with a gorgeous open deck view of the ocean… Ah yes, I had arrived for my new experiences. First Port...Turkey The first port was Kusadasi, Turkey. Not knowing much about Kusadasi, I read that it was a minor port frequented by vessels trading along the Aegean coast. In antiquity, it was overshadowed by Ephesus until Ephesus’ harbor silted up. Today, it is a thriving tourist destination ripe with available holiday homes with views of the Aegean Sea. The morning we arrived, the sun was shining in beautiful

W

blue skies, as we were loaded on buses for our excursions. Winding through the countryside, on our way to our first stop at the House of the Virgin Mary, I was mesmerized by the green fields of low hanging olive trees and the tall, mighty Cypress trees. We wound up the hills until we reached our holiest of destinations, the House of the Virgin Mary. The small stone chapel is believed to be built over the house of the Virgin Mary where the Apostle John took Mary after the Resurrection of Christ and believed to be her last known residence. The area is surrounded by a forest and is cool, inviting and serene. I couldn’t help but feel at peace when walking on the grounds. The chapel is small, intimate and peaceful. The quiet surrealism of the home overpowers everyone that walks through the doors with the only sound coming from the whispers of prayers. The experience of walking where the Blessed Mary had www.thehotelguide.com

walked and drinking water from the same natural spring well Mary had drunk from was one I will take in my heart forever. Epheseus is Next Our next stop was to the ancient city ruins of Ephesus. Much like the city of Pompeii, Ephesus was at one time a thriving metropolis with an advanced civilization. Ephesus had running water with sewer systems, a major port and a city that was mainly comprised of wealthy and middle class people. The architecture of the buildings is intricate and beautiful with detailed mosaics and marble that was used as flooring and streets. For photography buffs that enjoy landscape and architectural prints, this is an ideal destination. Visting the Marketplace in Kusadasi Our final destination was the city market place in Kusadasi. We were shuttled to a fine Turkish rug maker where we were offered the customary welcome drink of hot apple tea. The owners showcased their beautiful cotton and silk rugs, as female workers showed us how the fine rugs are woven on the looms. I was fascinated, as the rugs are very intricate and much more time consuming to make then I had ever imagined. As my husband and I wandered through the market place shopping for Turkish souvenirs amongst the knockoff purses and watches, we laughed at the constant barrage of hawkers and merchants. Unlike Mexico, they never invaded our personal space. If anything, they came across as humorous, sometimes charming salesmen who tried to simply talk to us by asking mundane questions… after in which they tried to convince us to buy their wares. I never felt intimidated and had several laughs along the way as I ate the best chocolate gelato I had ever eaten. My Journey’s Mission... I had decided that in each port, I would only buy something for myself with meaning that symbolized the country we were in. My Turkish experience that I was unconsciously looking for came to me when I wandered www.thehotelguide.com

Experiences

into a little shop on one of the back streets of the market. I entered because of the unique rings the merchant was showcasing in her window. Unlike the other stores, this one was different in that it was filled with unique, artful gifts and products. The store owner was a kind Turkish lady who greeted us with a warm hello. She saw me admiring a carved wooden box inlayed with mother of pearl and only when asked, did she begin to tell me about the artist who had made the box and where in Turkey he found the wood used for the beautiful little box. I was hooked and began asking her more questions. I discovered that she is really an artist/ archeologist who owned the store to offset the cost of her true passion of art and archeology. She shared information about an excavation she was currently on that would someday make Ephesus look small in comparison. As we talked, I was enthralled with her stories and my sweet husband bought me my beloved little box. As we said our goodbyes, she grabbed my hand, wished me well and said “I hope our paths cross again, as I believe they will.” As my husband and I left her shop and walked back to the ship hand-in-hand, we agreed with smiles that we had just had our Turkish experience. To be continued in the next edition. 37
