South Texas State Fair
T
he road to college basketball’s March Madness leads to the Final Four in South Texas this year. But March tips off madness of another sort in Beaumont for Texas state fairgoers. Great Fun! The YMBL South Texas State Fair, running March 24 through April 3, is the first of five state fairs this year for Texas. The Beaumont attraction is featured at Ford Park off Interstate 10 and benefits the Beaumont Young Men’s Business League. “The YMBL South Texas State Fair is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to the region to enjoy some unique craft and vendor booths, animal shows and rodeo – and of course, exquisite South Texas food,” said Stephanie Molina, director of marketing for the Beaumont Convention & Visitors Bureau. “A portion of the proceeds from the fair supports area charitable organizations, youth projects, civic programs, and other efforts to aid the elderly and those in need.” Tons to do... Visitors to the YMBL South Texas State Fair will also enjoy a carnival midway, live entertainment, petting zoo, photo and quilt contests, and an art show featuring the creative works of Beaumont-area school children. A trip to the fair isn’t complete without sampling the barbecue, 8
Tex-Mex and Cajun cuisine, including the local favorite – fried alligator! Incredible History The YMBL South Texas State Fair dates back to 1907 in Beaumont and moved from a fall event to the current spring dates in 2009. During World War II, the fair continued to operate in part from a request by the U.S. military in an attempt to improve the morale of soldiers stationed in and near Beaumont. The fair has been resilient, surviving the impact of two devastating hurricanes on the South Texas area. In 2005, the South Texas State Fair was cancelled because of the region’s extensive damage from Hurricane Rita, and in 2008, it was cancelled to allow Ford Park to serve as a hurricane relief staging area following the impact of Hurricane Ike. In an effort to unwind after a long day of shopping, eating and just having fun, guests can sit back and enjoy the 42” inch flat panel high definition television sets streaming their favorite shows or movies. Chicago’s Legendary Dining While Oprah’s city has long been known for its excellence in epicurean delights, particularly the famed deep-dish Chicago-style pizza we’ve all heard of and 28
so fondly love, the dining at the JW Marriott is a standalone venue. Its in-house Italian restaurant, The Florentine, offers Italian-American fare with an expected Chicagoan twist. Spring Hits Hudson Valley
Thayer Hotel Renovation stays true to Military Traditions
T
he United States Military Academy at West Point is located 50 miles north of New York City on cliffs high above the Hudson River and is one of the most picturesque locations in America. West Point is the oldest military post in America that has been continuously occupied since President George Washington (then General Washington) established the fort in 1778. General Washington claimed West Point to be “the key to the continent” because of its strategic location on the Hudson River and its significance during the Revolutionary war. The scores of monuments, memorials, relics, and Revolutionary fort ruins, make West Point a national historic landmark and one of the top three tourist attractions in New York. West Point is the ideal location for a scenic, romantic and historic getaway. Spend a day at West Point and come away with a lifetime of memories in the place that President Teddy Roosevelt said “of all the institutions in this country, none is more Absolutely American than West Point.” Not only is West Point a notable historical landmark, but is also the primary training ground for our leaders of tomorrow. Those who visit witness a whole new generation of Americans who are continuing “The Long Gray Line.” Cadets from every state and over 30 countries wear the same uniforms with little change as Generals Grant, Eisenhower, MacArthur, Hap Arnold, Schwarzkopf and Petraeus did as cadets. So whether you are indulging in the historical remnants of Trophy point on a guided tour of West Point, learning about cadet life at the Visitor’s Center Museum, or taking a tour of one of the only three U.S. treasury gold mints, you are sure to walk away with a better understanding of what it means to be American. 32
Accommodations at the Thayer Hotel only serve to enhance the “West Point Experience.” The historic and newly renovated Thayer Hotel is the only hotel located on the actual grounds of an active duty military base and is a 149 room full service hotel with six conference rooms, a world class restaurant and a rooftop lounge overlooking the Hudson River. First erected in 1829 as the West Point Hotel, the Thayer hosted a long list of dignitaries to include Lee, Grant, Sherman, and Poe and in 1929 under the direction on General Douglas MacArthur, was expanded and renamed the Thayer Hotel. Its prominent status of yesterday still lives on today. The Thayer Hotel is synonymous with West Point in its fame and in the present day, is still host to presidents, dignitaries, and celebrities alike. The Thayer’s notoriety is so great that President Ronald Reagan chose it to host the return of the Americans held hostage in Iran and it is often referred to as “America’s Hotel.” Its gothic architecture leaves no doubt that it is born from the same bloodlines as the centuries old buildings at West Point. Its old world charm and ambiance radiate with historical significance. Upon entering through the grand mahogany doors of the www.thehotelguide.com
Thayer Hotel, guests are greeted by a roaring fire and the statuesque portrait of Sylvanius Thayer, “Father of The Military Academy” and for whom the Thayer Hotel was named. Recent renovations throughout have succeeded in modernizing the hotel while keeping with its characteristic old world charm. Breathtaking views of the Hudson River and the Hudson Valley are a recurring theme throughout the hotel. Each of its 149 guest rooms is dedicated to an inspirational West Point Graduate who has been instrumental in shaping West Point and America’s History. Not only does each of its guests enjoy modern and luxurious room accommodations, but also provided is the opportunity to learn about the men and women that helped set the standard for the United States Military Academy through the Thayer Hotel’s Room Dedication program. The hallways are a living museum, each adorned with a beautiful brass plaque outside each guest room door, telling the story of the honored graduate for whom that room is named. This unique attribute sets the Thayer apart from any other hotel in the world. The newly renovated dining room, christened “MacArthur’s Restaurant” after General Douglas MacArthur, is fine dining at its best. With its visually stimulating décor, incredible views of the Hudson River and a decadent menu of appetizers, entrees and desserts, you will feel certain that you are in the presence of royalty. If it’s a more casual meal you desire, then step into “General Patton’s Tavern”. Located adjacent to “MacArthur’s”; “Patton’s” is decorated as an Army sports bar and offers a lighter menu, a vast array of spirits, and plush leather couches to sink into after a busy day of sightseeing, shopping or meetings. Enjoy a romantic al fresco dining experience with outdoor cafe dining on “President Thomas Jefferson’s Patio.” Seduce your senses as a cool summer breeze caresses your face and the sun kissed horizon bids the

day adieu. The Thayer Hotel offers the perfect setting to fall in love all over again. For nightlife, look no further than the Thayer Hotel’s rooftop terrace bar, “Zulu Time,” the number one hot spot for high-end nightlife in the Hudson Valley. Set against the panoramic views of the Hudson River Valley, Zulu Time Lounge is the ideal meeting place for a casual get together, after work happy hour, and a night out with your friends. For the sports enthusiast, you are in luck. There is never a shortage of USMA sporting events to attend just inside the gates of West Point. What better way to support our future military leaders than by sitting in the stands cheering on their athletic efforts. Watch a soccer game and be inspired when both teams stop play in the midst of a rush on the goal- when the bugle sounds Retreat to lower the flag at sunset. The Thayer Hotel strives to create an unforgettable experience for its guests and give them memories that will last a lifetime. A Tour of the Caribbean & Fun Cocktail inspired clothing and accessory company. We're a drinking company with a clothing problem.

onging for the college years where Spring Break meant crazy times on a beach? Well we have found three amazing beaches in the Caribbean where you won’t have to worry about running in to drunk college kids, but you may find some “big kids” having a great time. So if you’re looking for lots of fun in the sun you should check out these beautiful and super fun Caribbean destinations.
L
St. Croix - Rhythm’s at Rainbow Beach What makes a good beach bar great? We think it’s an energetic & friendly bartender, unique local cocktails (loaded with rum, preferably), live music and a beautiful beach. Well that is exactly what you will find at Rhythm’s Beach Bar on St. Croix. Rhythm’s is almost (I repeat almost) walking distance from the cruise ship terminal and is not a tourist trap. The locals love this party bar on the island and so do we. If you’re feeling adventurous you can rent some water sport gear or if you just want to imbibe in some local cocktails let us recommend the Lime in the Coconut! They are delicious and pack a buzz filled punch! Around 3pm the party vibe picks up as they have live local music! While we were there only during the day we hear their parties go late in to the night! St. Kitt’s - Reggae Beach Bar & Grill It seems that St. Kitt’s is often looked over by the traditional travel publications, but we are here to tell you this is one fun island! Reggae Beach Bar is about a 2030 min ride from the Cruise ship port, but is worth the time and cash. You’ll get to do lots of island sight seeing on your trip to the beach and then when you arrive the party begins! Grab your beach chair of choice, and let the friendly staff take care of you. Cocktails delivered to your beach chair, aloe massages, monkeys, music, Wilber the huge hog, and a party deck in the water…what more could 36
you ask for? If you’re ready for a fun day we suggest taking a few buckets of beer out to the floating deck, enjoy the sun and the view of the island! Barbados - The Boatyard We love this Spring Break meets tropical island destination. Because this hot spot is owned by a nonlocal, the cab drivers hate to bring you here. But if you are looking for a fun day of drinking and playing on the beach, this is the place. It’s a short cab ride from the cruise ship terminal, has a gorgeous powder white sand beach, a dock with a rope swing, and music playing all day. It is the ultimate beach party! They have many specialty drinks such as the Shark Bite, but more often than not, a Banks Beer or rum & coke will do the trick. Listen for the bell at two o’clock every afternoon, it means free shots!! So if you’re ready to party, head on in and line up around the bar. And just so you know, the free shots are not served in glasses, they are poured right out of the bottle into your mouth! No matter where you go or what you do, just have fun and remember…Travel Global, Drink Local! Party with us! www.teamcocktail.com www.facebook.com/teamcocktail www.twitter.com/teamcocktail www.youtube.com/teamcocktail

ARIA Las Vegas
Las Vegas Elegance at it’s Finest
by: Mike Taylor
s we thought about what hotel in Vegas would make a beautiful anniversary trip, we decided on the newest addition to the strip, ARIA Resort and Casino. With this resort being less than 8 months old, we hoped they worked out all the opening kinks and issues. We opted for the air/hotel package direct from the website www.arialasvegas.com. For $1,700 we booked flight and a three-night stay in the 1,050 sq ft. Sky Suite. The resort was expecting our arrival with a limo driver waiting at the baggage claim area with a sign “ARIA Resort and Casino – Taylor”. The driver was a very sweet lady who was quickly welcoming us to Las Vegas and offered us a sincere “Happy Anniversary”. We were then whisked away in a silver stretch limousine with cold water waiting in the cup holders for the short drive to the resort. Upon arrival, we entered the private V. I. P. Exclusive porte-cochere entry accessed via limousine only. This was so nice because we did not have to fight through a casino like most resorts on the strip. Being that it was 9am, there were various juices and breakfast snacks such as muffins, donuts, and pastries that welcomed us in the Sky Suite Lounge at check-in. In this same area daily from 4-9pm, there are top shelf alcohol drinks being served as well as various cheeses and snacks. When entering the room, there were red rose petals that I had planned along with a chilled bottle of champagne awaiting us. The room was everything we expected and more. Walking in, the sheers and curtains open slowly and music begins to play. Light slowly begin to brighten and we enter on a path of red rose petals that lead to the bedroom and on the bed was a huge heart that was shaped out of more red rose petals. The living room was complete with a 52” flat screen HD TV as well as the bedroom. In the massive bathroom, there was another small TV along with a spectacular oversized Jacuzzi tub

smack dab in the middle of the bathroom. Elegance at its best. A comfortable seating area in the shower with beautiful tile from floor to ceiling. The room is complete with wet bar, mini bar, safe and a very cool remote that controls everything from curtains to temperature and lighting in the room. Service and professionalism at its best with ARIA. I would highly recommend this resort to anyone that is ready for something in Vegas that is truly different from everyone else. It is extremely clean and crisp. Unlike most resorts, every corner of this looks different and you can navigate easily through the entire casino and resort by the spectacular landmarks of eating places as well as modern art. We must mention that Jean George Steakhouse is a must see when you visit. This restaurant was not only beautiful, it was top notch service at its finest. The food was amazing and the atmosphere was astonishing. Bravo! This is our new vacation resort!
