DOWN AT THE ZOO

Introduction In this publication the inspiration came from an unlikely source and in this publication we have decided to selected two zoo’s that are truly unique. The two Zoo’s we have chosen are Chester Zoo, England and Budapest Zoo, Hungary, both represent the past and the future and are famous and well known throughout the world. Both have experienced the hardships of war and the turmoil of economic decline and yet they have gone through all this and came out on the other side much stronger.

CHESTER ZOO The main entrance of the zoo hasn't changed much over the years and the car parking facilities have grown to accommodate the increase in visitors In fact outside of London for the third year running it is the most poplar attraction in England and in a press release for 2013 the zoo welcomed 1,409,249 visitors. This was then beaten in 2016 when a staggering 1.9 million people came to visit the zoo. In September 2016 the Zoo announced plans that it was intending to invest £ 7 million as visitor numbers and the demand grows. And they were increasing their efforts to conserve as many endangered species. With this in mind Chester Zoo is leading the way and it’s no wonder that people throughout the country are attracted to it like magnets.

CHERSTER ZOO This old Victorian manor known as Oakfield House was built in 1885 is the home of Chester zoo and it used to be the home of the Mottershead family, who are the founders of the zoo. In fact it was George Mottershead who purchased the building for £ 3,500.00 in 1930 and whilst they lived in the house they used the stables to develop the zoo. Since the 1930’s the zoo has grown and the building is now a listed Grade II building with the National Heritage for England. The Zoo is set in 125 acres of land and contains 500 species and 15,000 animals and has award winning gardens of outstanding beauty. The Zoo has diversified over the years and now offers other facilities such as the zoofari monorail and guided boats that taken you around the lazy river through the numerous islands, both are a great way to see the entire site.

I guess he doesn't want to share so he isn’t monkeying around when it comes down to his food just look at his eyes.

Both of them seemed to be on sentry duty and had that certain look about them

The animals are everywhere in all sort places and just by exploring you will see.

HIDING IN THE TREES This little red panda is on the endangered species list and this one is called Nima, her name in Tibetan means Sun. Recently the pair were successive in breeding and in June 2014 two more cubs added to their numbers, but only the last few months her partner passed away.

As you navigate on the Lazy River you come across scenes like this and the birds do flock together and is such a wonderful sight to see

SO MUCH MORE TO SEE

BUDAPEST ZOO

Budapest Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Europe and did set the beach mark that many other younger zoos then followed. It was established in 1866 as a private institution and was later took over by the city and opened up with an amazing 500 animals that included big cats, hippopotamuses, bears, giraffes and some themed house like the “Elephant House. Also the botanical gardens are amazing and the classic palm house was built in the early part of the 20th century and they have built two new aviaries. The polar bears and the sea lions always pull in the crowds and are real favourites and yet the Hungarian farm brings this extra dimension that many visitors do like.

Also they have musical evening concerts in the zoo that includes jazz and other light music . And with temperatures hitting 40c in the height of summer the cafe is welcomed sought after oasis for refreshments.

DOWN BY THE ELEPHANTS When these buildings were first built the zoo tried to replicate as close as they could the original habitats so through out the zoo what you see is a microscopic collection of regions of the world. This is same in any modern zoo because the animal needs to feel at home in its naturally environment and anything less would to cause them stress. This building with its domes and the blue coloured tiles still looks like an impressive home for these Asian elephants.

IN THE FOREST In this region of the zoo it represented Africa and the orangutan was very curious this day.

At first we thought it was having an argument with a box and it was very focused. After a while it got what it wanted and had emptied all the contents across the ground. Very clever and intelligent and most of all determined to succeed even in this heat!!

DOWN BY THE LAKE The pelican house on this lake was packed with many different types of species of birds as the heat of the day kept on rising. Yet this scene was quite deceptive because the birds looked as if they were resting but this was ideal weather for the turtles .

DON’T LOOK NOW!! In the animal farm there are goats birds and many others, but it was this deer that caught our eye .

And as the heat of the day reached it’s height the polar bears kept on dipping into the icy cold water to cool off, which explained why he came out with blue nose! Both Zoo’s have different beginnings and both share the same heart for preservation of wildlife that is rapidly fading away from our world. Yet there is hope with each new generation of children and benefactors that will defend and protect the rights of other species that share our world. These zoo in our opinion are absolutely amazing.
