The escalation of consumer interest and investment in coffee, tea and home bar/cocktail related products is undeniable. The home and housewares industry has been both immediate and inventive in its response to these interests. In creating this latest portfolio, we often found ourselves reaching past the physical and technical aspects of the products we reviewed to deliver a perspective on sustainable growth in these three categories while also addressing the larger and more important question of “Why?”
Beyond the attraction of “new and next” in the products which most impressed our team, the best among them shared an indefinable magnetism. Once we had made our final selections the “X Factor” became obvious. The best of the best created a new, improved or personalized experience.
In 1999, Joseph Pine and James Gilmore introduced the concept of the Experience Economy1, a new way of thinking about customer experiences to attract them and earn their loyalty. As proof, Pine and Gilmore pointed to Apple, Disney, LEGO and Starbucks among others. Initially, the concept focused on the consumers’ experience within that company’s retail environment. Today we must factor in a new reality: the experience economy has become a value factor at the item level. Moreover, it affects choice and opinion beyond the sale and well into the consumer’s ownership and use of products.
The offered experiences vary broadly across the items in this portfolio. Some promise ease of use, expanded functionality, superior durability or personalized results. As you review this portfolio, and your future assortments, consider the experiences promised and the value they add.

We asked consumers... What has the greatest influence on your decision to buy?
What are a few directional trends
to watch relating to coffee, tea, beer, wine and cocktails in the home space?
Joe Derochowski VP, Home Industry Advisor, Circana
Consumers are eating more meals at home in part to save money and as such we see beverage consumption has increased. Coffee and tea are hot … pun intended. Innovation in the coffee and tea space means without leaving home we can make more of the specialty drinks we love, like lattes, cappuccinos and other coffee and tea beverages. In addition, consumers are entertaining more so we see beer and cocktail makers up; wine, martini, and margarita glass unit sales are up. Bottom line, in our efforts to save money we are eating and entertaining more at home which is good for the home industry.
GRAEF - PAGE 16
The act of brewing or buying coffee has become deeply embedded in American culture. For many, it has moved beyond an act of routine to one of ritual. We associate it with comfort and familiarity in stressful times, and a well-deserved reward in others. Coffee has become a social symbol. For many, it plays the role of mood enhancer, fueling energy and creativity for work that needs doing or celebrating a job well done.
As design and technology have evolved around coffee, experience has become an insperience—easily allowing us to create at home those beverages and moments formerly confined to the local coffee shop. More importantly, we can experiment, create and even customize our brews. For the home brewer, today’s coffee experience now offers the comfort of rhythmic regularity and the flexibility to adapt to our changing appetites. Home brewing makes possible both financial and time savings, not to mention reducing our consumption of disposable paper, plastics and even gas.
And so we celebrate in the following pages just a few of the products advancing ease and experience for the home brewer.
46% of consumers surveyed make coffee, espresso and related specialties a part of everyday meals.
Coffee beverages are important when entertaining and celebrating as well, selected by 44% of respondents.
What factors are currently driving consumer excitement and demand for new products and technologies for home-crafted coffee and tea enthusiasts?
Consumer demand for home-crafted coffee and tea, both hot and cold brew, has never been higher. Brands that want to captivate this market need to remember two things—make it doable and make it delicious. Make it doable with sophisticated equipment that is easy and intuitive to use. And make it delicious with uncompromising brewing techniques, a wide variety of beverage choices and multiple options to personalize or flavor your beverage to taste.

Has social media affected the evolution of the ‘Home Bar’ trend? What about at-home creation of cocktails, mocktails and interests in wine, whiskey and beer?
Adrian Bredeson Co-Owner, E-Power Marketing
Social media has shaken up the home bar scene, inspiring people to explore niche spirits, liqueurs and bar tools. A growing community of at-home bartenders exchanging recipes, tips and trends has turned the home bar into a stylish social hub. Brands can tap into this trend by offering curated barware and glassware that elevate the experience, helping consumers craft stunning cocktails right at home.
The expansion of the Home Bar stands as one of the pandemic’s silver linings. Our house-bound period gave us the time to explore our bar craftsmanship, and after our confinement a hunger for re-socialization gave us a platform to share our skills when at-home entertaining resurged.
What’s more, social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have played an important role as hubs for sharing creativity and inspiration for new recipes, hacks and trends. Home barcraft has expanded to include cocktails, mocktails, beer and ales, wines and whiskeys.
As these trends evolve, demand has increased for products that add ease to creation and style to presentation. Bar carts are back, laden with tools, trays and tumblers that bring a new decorative and functional focus to our living spaces.
What follows are a few of the products that fed our love for innovation and imagination at recent global markets.
MIXED DRINKS
When it comes to everyday meals nearly 1/3 of consumers serve wine with Millennials leading the pack by almost 10%.
How have at-home dining and entertaining experiences evolved since the end of the pandemic? What effect are those changes having on the products we are attracted to?
Gary Inman President and Principal, Gary Inman Interior Design
Isolation engenders a longing for togetherness. Our need to hug friends, share smiles and simply occupy the same space is powerful. Many of us came out of the pandemic with dreams of chic cocktail parties and elegantly curated dinners. A chance to celebrate our humanity. It also stimulated a desire to collect the accoutrements of entertaining from fine china to artisan-made glasses, bar carts and cabinets, fancy kitchenware and comfortable furniture indoors and outdoors. Cheers to fine living!

A BAR ABOVE
It’s clear that consumers are demanding new technologies in creating and presenting coffee, tea and home bar creations. How have product aesthetics and design attributes such as form and color evolved to suit consumer needs and desires?
Adrian Bredeson Co-Owner, E-Power Marketing
Michelle Lamb Founder and Editorial Director The Trend Curve™
Aesthetics play a key role, beginning with color. Not since the 1950s have there been so many hues and palettes. This is as true for the increasing number of small appliances meant to be stored on countertops as it is for glassware that becomes décor when displayed on a home bar. Texture is enhancing serving items like carafes, with ribbing a standout. Color blocking, metallic enhancements and unique shapes are emerging trends for stemware. Going forward, this will make decorative value even more important in the category.
Maximilian Riedel CEO and President, Riedel
At Riedel, we constantly innovate to meet evolving consumer and trade demands, creating functional, high-quality glassware for all levels of wine drinkers–from novices to sommeliers. With my “O” collection, we introduced the first stemless wine glass in response to a demand for more casual, space-saving options. Later, we expanded our Drink Specific Glassware collection with larger versions of the Sour and Nick & Nora glasses to accommodate growing preferences. Listening to customers and embracing new ideas is key to creating memorable products.
