The secrets of family business

I

t was around 11.00am on a Thursday morning and Lionel Lee was standing with his Mum, Yenda, addressing his team following the official proceedings to open the Miele Specialist store at the inner Sydney suburb of Drummoyne. A fleet of expensive vehicles with tinted windows had just whisked away VIPs including Miele co-owner Reinhard Zinkann, Miele global MD Dr Axel Kniehl as well as local executives Sjaak Brouwer and Chris Kotis. With his management team and store staff around him, Lionel started crying spontaneously. He told his staff these were tears of pride as he was so humbled by what the business had created. Lionel told his team how proud he was of them and what they had achieved, while also remembering his father and brother who he would have loved to have been there to see the first joint venture of its kind and the largest Miele branded experience centre globally. The Miele Specialist store in Drummoyne which was previously the location for another joint venture with Sony, took almost three years to transform from a traditional Bing Lee store to its current single-brand focus. So the story goes, Kniehl was in the former Bing Lee store for a matter of minutes before he had a frank and open discussion with Lionel which ended with a handshake committing both parties to a future concept. It is purely because of close and long-lasting personal relationships that the Miele Specialist store came to fruition and this represents the icing on the 60th birthday cake for the Bing Lee retail business.

As both family-owned companies, Miele and Bing Lee have benefited from the generational change that has brought new insights and opportunities to their businesses. For the current co-owner of Miele, Zinkann believes stores like the Miele Specialist store in Drummoyne deliver a clear difference to the online retailing environment. Drawing on his global experience, Zinkann claims that no matter how amazing your web pages are, online can never give you the feel, the smell, the touch, or the face-to-face discussions of an in-store experience. And for Miele, with the launch of products such as the Blizzard bagless machine now rolling out through stores nationally as well as the imminent launch of the Smartline Two-In-One hob and hood, Dialog oven and Scout RX2 robotic vacuum cleaner, it will be the instore experience that communicates the features and benefits to the consumer. But for Lionel, in celebrating Bing Lee’s 60th anniversary this year, he thanks two important groups of people – his 603 staff that work in the business every day and he also recognises the value of his suppliers like Miele – without whom he would not have a business. The secret to the success of both Bing Lee and Miele is that they are more than just family companies – their business partners are also treated as members of the family.

Betta Home Living to open Brisbane training centre Betta Home Living has announced it will open a training centre in Brisbane and will represent the first of other training centres planned throughout the country. The 1200 square metre training centre, located at Underwood in the south-east of Brisbane’s CBD, is scheduled to open before Christmas and will also operate as a standalone store. According to Betta Home Living chief executive officer, Graeme Cunningham, the training centre will be used by new franchisees for induction purposes as well as head office management and existing members. “This is the first training centre where we will be helping to develop our staff in not just retail sales but management training as well as other areas of the business such as inventory management,” he said. “The training centre will lift the level of professionalism within the business and incorporate both furniture and electrical products. Every key category will be presented with the best displays to represent the opportunities available and cooking will have a particular focus as a specialist category within the layout of the store. We are looking to grow the number of stores currently involved in our cooking program which is now in place across 35 of our stores.

“I have always believed that the group needed this training centre and there are plans to open more around the country with the aim to have at least one in each state over the next five years. The Betta group is very different to when it started over a decade ago and we need to do this to improve at every level of the business. As new franchisees join our company, we need to provide an appropriate induction program. We also have a lot of great existing retailers who can benefit from training programs, sales strategies as well as modules in administration and management. Our suppliers are keen to support with product training and this is designed for them to use as well,” he said. AR

Mitchell & Brown re-joins Retravision Regional WA electrical retailer, Mitchell & Brown, has re-joined the Retravision group after a 13-year absence. In an exclusive interview with Appliance Retailer, Mitchell & Brown managing director, Steve Nanninga said, the decision for him and his business partner Greg Brown to re-join the Retravision group made sense for the future of the business. “It can be challenging to be a single independent over here in regional Western Australia in terms of having that really close contact with suppliers. So by joining Retravision, this gives us some power and strength. “In a tough market, we can see some synergies to be part of the Retravision group and to grow our brand alongside what they are doing throughout Western Australia. From our perspective, nothing has changed in our business other than we have added Retravision back in,” Nanninga said. David Dorsett-Lynn, who acquired the licence to exclusively franchise the Retravision business in Western Australia, has welcomed the Mitchell & Brown business back into the group.

BY JAMES WELLS

“Retravision is very pleased to have an exceptional retailer like Mitchell & Brown join with us and both Steve and Greg provide outstanding service in the Geraldton and surrounding areas,” Dorsett-Lynn told Appliance Retailer. The Mitchell & Brown business opened almost half a century ago and over this time has transitioned from a Retravision member, to a member of the Narta buying group and now back to Retravision. “Colin Brown and Doug King started off as King & Brown 48 years ago, before becoming Geraldton Mitchell & Brown has re-joined the Retravision group

Retravision and then Mitchell & Brown when Barry Mitchell was brought into the business and we started selling computers and mobile phones 22 years ago. For the first 35 years we were members of Retravision and in 2004, we became standalone members of Narta as at that time we could see synergies in that decision. But the market has changed again and it is good to go back to where we started,” Nanninga said. The Geraldton-based retailer is also one of the most remote with a large catchment area representing a significant part of Western Australia. “We have a strong name in the mid-west community and we invest in a lot of local sponsorships. We are lucky that we have a loyal customer base with a reach up to 500km north, 450km inland and 300km south, while also being 50 metres from the ocean,” Nanninga said. “From our perspective, nothing has changed in our business other than we have added Retravision back in.” AR

When consumers join a new membership program powered by Australia Post, Shipster, for $9.95, they

Australia Post acting managing director and group CEO, Christine Corbett said, “We know our customers love to shop online and this Christmas we expect more gifts to be bought online than ever before. Shipster lets consumers shop with confidence knowing that there will be no surprises at the checkout.” Following the introductory period, Shipster membership will cost $6.95 per month and continue to allow customers to receive free delivery where shipping costs less than $20. welcomed the new shipping membership program as a crucial move toward helping Australian businesses keep up with a rapidly-changing consumer market. NRA CEO Dominique Lamb said while innovative retailers were constantly changing their business models to keep step with consumer demand and a changing social environment, they still had to factor in ways to deal with cost imposts outside their control. “Out-of-date legislation, costly red tape, unsustainable penalty rates and unnecessary compliance costs trickle down into higher prices to consumers, so any move that gives customers the opportunity to significantly reduce their shipping costs is a welcome one. Retailers understand that convenience, speed, value and experience are crucial for attracting modern consumers, so we welcome any initiative that strengthens these offerings,” Lamb said. Gift card reform passes NSW Parliament New laws that put consumers first by giving them a fairer deal on gift cards has passed the NSW Parliament. Samsung Electronics Australia director of home appliances, Jeremy Senior said, “We are excited to announce Samsung QuickDrive. We believe this advanced new technology can help meet consumer demand for time-saving products and can give consumers the freedom to focus on what really matters to them.” The unique QuickDrive Drum consists of a large main drum and a plate in the back that rotates independently. Unlike many conventional washers that move clothes repeatedly up and down over the course of the cycle, the WW8800M moves clothes from top to bottom in the drum, and the plate in the back of the drum introduces a back and forth movement. It creates a dynamic action powered by double forces that can quickly, gently and thoroughly remove dirt to deliver an intense and complete wash cycle. The new WW8800M also includes BubbleWash™ for powerful washing performance by mixing air and water to generate fine detergent bubbles. It also comes with Samsung’s Add Wash® feature that gives users the ability to add items during the cycle*iv, as well as add detergent or fabric softener at a later time.

CORD-FREE VACUUM BOASTS SUPERIOR SUCTION POWER Samsung’s POWERstick Pro™ cordless vacuum cleaner is designed to offer suction power with up to 150 watts of power thanks to Samsung’s Digital Inverter motor. The Dual Action Brush of the POWERstick Pro consists of two brushes, each with a

separate drum, to help pick up dirt better. It can spin at 5000rpm, moving in opposite directions to help capture both fine dust and large particles. Jeremy Senior commented, “We are pleased to announce Samsung’s innovative new cordless vacuum cleaner, the POWERstick Pro, delivering powerful suction and easymanoeuvre ergonomic design to make it easy for Australians to vacuum their homes. We are assessing the Australian market to determine when the POWERstick Pro will be made available and will announce further details closer to launch”. POWERstick PRO packs a powerful charge, running on a 32.4V lithium-ion removable power pack that offers up to 40 minutes of battery life so you can continue on with your vacuuming.iii The patented ergonomic Flex Handle folds up to 50 degrees with a click of a button to help reach under low furniture with ease. The EZClean dustbin empties with one quick pull of the lever so contents can be disposed with minimal effort, and the entire dustbin structure can be detached and washed with water. The EZClean Brush also detaches easily. It boasts HEPA filtration to help ensure 99.9% of the dust collected stays in the canister. AR i Suitable for low-velocity, shallowwater activities, including swimming. Do not use for deep water or highvelocity water activities, including surfing, platform diving, scuba diving, or motorised watersports. ii Not a medical or therapeutic device. Heart rate readings are intended for informational purposes only. iii Actual battery life and charging time may vary and depend on usage conditions. iv Add door can be opened at any time if the temperature inside the drum is below 50 degrees Celsius and the drum has stopped spinning. www.applianceretailer.com.au

DE’LONGHI AUSTRALIA CEO CELEBRATES 20 YEARS BY EMILY BENCIC

2017 marks 20 years at De’Longhi for Australian CEO, Paolo Albertoni. After starting with the company in sales in Europe, and later as regional commercial director for the UK and the Americas, Albertoni was given the opportunity to move to Australia to head up the local operations. “It has been an amazing journey since I arrived here. It has been challenging but I have loved every single minute,” he said. “I have always felt happy and at home with De’Longhi. It is the culture of the business, a place people work hard, but they love it. I am also quietly very proud of what we have been able to achieve in the time I have been with the company,” he said. Albertoni believes his decision to move to Australia and build the business to what it is today has been his most significant milestone to date. “Australia has grown in profile globally. We have gone from “that island past Asia” to where we help drive global initiatives and feature in the top countries for turnover.” As for the group, he believes an investment in the domestic coffee machine market was a “game changer” with De’Longhi now leading the category worldwide. De’Longhi was born as an electric heating manufacturer with founder and chairman, Giuseppe De’Longhi initially

exploring the potential for heating appliances in the Australian market. Since then, the range has grown to include other comfort categories, major appliances, small domestic appliances, as well as food preparation and linen care under the Kenwood and Braun brands. Along with the evolution of product has come a shift in consumer expectations. Consumers have become more sophisticated, knowledgeable

and tech savvy, according to Albertoni. “They want simplicity, versatility and beauty from products they can connect with and that can improve their lifestyle. “Ultimately the key is to focus not on what products do, but on what the consumer gets out of it. That is what sits behind our coffee message of ‘Making moments uniquely yours’, it talks to how people use our products and what it delivers, not what the machines can do,” he said. And when it comes to market trends, “Technology will continue to look to deliver experiences or solve problems; ecosystems, portability, versatility, multipurpose devices and hubs are trends we see developing; businesses who fail to innovate will be left behind”. So how does he ensure De’Longhi remains ahead of the curve when it comes to innovation? “I always try to think differently, challenge myself and the team, be curious, take risks, and create a culture and environment where people feel safe to share ideas and contribute.” And with this comes continuous drive, an ability to communicate well, inspire and support the team, according to Albertoni. “We are in new times, which is daunting but also really exciting. We don’t need to wait for the path to be revealed, we can make it, we just need to be brave. “Being brave is in our DNA as a business; this gives De’Longhi the ability to help shape the future of our industry in Australia, we just need to listen to consumers and find innovative ways to meet their expectations.” AR

SIEMENS AVANT-GARDE LAUNDRY LINE-UP

The new Siemens avantgarde laundry appliances embody outstanding design, innovative technology and exceptional convenience thanks to the inclined control panel, intuitive multiTouch LED display and automated features such as i-Dos. The washing machines and dryer feature a new blue indicator ring to allow users to read the current program status even at a distance. The appliances can now be operated via a 5-inch colour TFT full-touch display, which sits on a beveled fascia panel for enhanced legibility and ergonomics, and can be controlled from a mobile device. The user receives status messages directly via the Home Connect App. After selecting the load type, the app suggests the most gentle program for the chosen textiles. For the first time, customers have the choice between i-Dos and sensoFresh. With i-Dos, users simply need to fill the washing machine with liquid detergent approximately every 20 washes, sensors then ensure the exact amount of detergent is dispensed each time. The alternative sensoFresh washing machine, by contrast, allows odours to be removed from non-washable clothes, using natural activated oxygen rather than chemical additives. Both washing machines have a total of 20 wash programs and 13 additional features, including the Siemens anti-stain system and various time-saving options. The latter is also offered with the dryer. The dryer volume has also increased, with a capacity of 9 kilos. It automatically cleans the lint filter with each drying session. The lint is diverted to a repository where it is condensed. The repository simply has to be cleaned approximately every 20 drying cycles, with the display indicating when the lint repository needs to be emptied.

BOSCH REFRIGERATOR WORLD-FIRST

Bosch will be launching the first fridge-freezer combination with easily replaceable, coloured door fronts – the Vario Style refrigerator. Available in 19 colours, the refrigerators allow consumers to readily personalise and update their kitchen. Thanks to an attachment system with concealed brackets and magnets, the door fronts can be replaced within seconds without using any tools. Consumers just need to pull the front gently, lift and remove it, and hook on the new door. The VitaFresh freshness system means there is two different climate zones to allow food to stay fresh for longer. With its uniformly low temperature of around 0 degrees Celsius and low humidity, the top area of the VitaFresh zone offers the perfect conditions for storing meat and fish hygienically. In the lower VitaFresh zone, fruit and vegetables benefit from two different settings to ensure ideal humidity. The new Vario Style refrigerator also offers efficient LED lighting, electronic temperature control and optimum air circulation. 20

Bi-Rite Home Appliances Conference BY EMILY BENCIC

i-Rite Home Appliances hosted its fourth annual conference at Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast with over 200 attendees, including members and trade partners. The conference consisted of a welcome dinner, opening address to members and trade partners, a trade show and awards evening. Bi-Rite Home Appliances general manager, Abdul Kayum Sacur said, “Our conference continues to evolve and improve to provide mutual benefit to both our retail members and trade partners. We are excited for 2018 and look forward to the opportunities the industry will bring.”

The opening address from the Bi-Rite Home Appliances management team outlined the business changes over the past two years for the group, the importance of the customer experience, the arrival of Amazon on Australian shores and what’s to come in 2018 as the retailer celebrates 20 years in business. Abdul Kayum Sacur said, “It was 2015 when we decided to make major changes to the business, including a greater focus on core ranging, marketing and breathing new life to the Bi-Rite logo and brand. One of the topics last year was regarding the uniform identity that is the Bi-Rite Home Appliances brand and how we can work together to best prepare for the future by enhancing the shopping experience in our stores.

“We have been working fiercely to build our brand identity and will continue to invest and drive this further. I am confident about where we are going with the brand. Bi-Rite is more recognised within the industry and more often than not, we are on the shopping list. We need to create noise for our brand and be at the front of mind of consumers when they are ready to make a purchase. “We often get asked, what is your opinion on Amazon and what will it mean for the industry? I believe our strength as a group is our regional locations, which is somewhere Amazon will not be able to deliver cost effectively when compared to metro areas.

“Australia has a population of about 23 million people but we are very spread out. Our advantage as a business is that we are established in towns where there may only be one or two other retailers. We do not want to give Amazon the opportunity to enter our territory. “Amazon is a behemoth and massive conglomerate. They will make it work eventually so we need to make sure that we give customers a reason not to shop with them. I believe one of the largest concerns is margins as Amazon will expose customers to the market price and will drive it down. When a customer walks into a store expecting to match the price of other retailers, such as Aldi or Costco, you either accept it and lower your expectations or you switch to sell them something that makes more money. “We need to be prepared and work as a team – it has to be a group effort. So how can we compete with Amazon? I believe it will be by having something different. Amazon does not have stores so they cannot do the in-store experience like we can. Consumers are still looking for instant gratification. Yes, Amazon will take market share and there will be many people buying from them but equally, the retailers who have adapted to compete with them have had success and growth. We have always provided our customers with confidence for shopping local and we have to keep driving this message.” AR www.applianceretailer.com.au

AR PROFILE Bing Lee CEO Lionel Lee with his mum, Yenda

Sixty years of success

T

BY JAMES WELLS

his year marks six decades since Bing Lee and his son Ken opened an electrical repair business at Fairfield in Western Sydney. Bing Lee CEO Lionel Lee makes a point to not speak to the press, however to commemorate the anniversary, provided an insight into the family values that have formed the business and preserve it for the future. According to Lionel Lee there is a secret to the success of Bing Lee. It is not one magic ingredient such as their business strategy or a mission statement – “the secret ingredient is our staff, all 603 of our company’s staff; they are the reason we are successful,” he says. “We have a family attitude towards business and a very team focused structure. Integral to this is our very stable and experienced management 24

team led by my buddy Phil Moujaes. We are very lucky to have these people in our business and we try to make most of the decisions by consensus. “Phil, our General Manager, has been with us for 19 years, and epitomises the strength and stability of our management team. I met Phil when he was a buyer for Vox/Chandlers and we would go on supplier buying trips together. Phil is very calm and methodical in his thinking, and he helps me by providing a sometimes different perspective. “I have got so much to thank him for, as does our family. There are no rock stars or individuals in our management team, we just all work together to deliver the result. “We have a great mix of leaders in Bing Lee, old and new to the business, such as Peter Harris, who heads Business Development and Retail Sales, and is Merchandise Director

Appliance Retailer November / December 2017

for Whitegoods and Cooking; Russell Goldberg who is Merchandise Director AV, Ritchie Djhamur who is head of Sales Learning and Culture, Peter Braithwaite our operations manager, joined the business when he was 17 and is now 52 and our CFO Aubrey who’s been associated with the business for over three decades. “Bing Lee management has been very stable; my cousin Gary Lee – our buyer for whiteware and seasonal (20 years), Ben Nursoo – our property and legal guy (16 years), Ken Lau – our internal IT manager (20 years), Michelle Simmonds – our head of store audit (20 years), Ken Poole – our logistics Manager, 11 years, Sean Ng – our HR and payroll officer (19 years) and Theo Baltsas – our longest serving store manager whose daughter Greggie and Simon work with us – has been with us for over 35 years!! “We have a great team who not only understand our culture, they have formed it. “The recent contribution from John Murphy has been integral in making important decisions with the business. I’m very happy that ‘Murph’ has found his way back home to Winnings; and as always, he will again add value to their business as he did to ours. One thing I’ll miss about Murph is the pragmatism he brought to our business such as deciding whether certain locations had potential for our business or needed to be closed. “Closing stores is emotionally the hardest thing to do in a family business because of the effect on the people. Whether it is the fault of the store or the location, there is no use attributing blame. If something fails you need to recognise the failure and move on, and for a family business it is quite tough, but if the store is not going to work, you have to make that call.”

CREATING A STRONG BUSINESS

The business of multi-site omni-channel retailing in 2017 is very different to operating a single store in the late 1950s, but the Bing Lee business has experienced several changes and is likely to experience even more in the months and years to come. “For our 60th anniversary, it is clearly about celebrating another milestone, but it is also another year where the business has become more

challenging. Our website continues to grow in sales, and by Christmas, we will have 38 stores, including two new stores opening before Christmas; one at Marsden Park and another, a re-located store at Penrith both in Western Sydney. “Amazon is the talk of retail at the moment. Amazon will create change for all retailers, however through this change, they will make us better, and we as retailers must always change to survive.

THE LEGACY OF KEN LEE

December this year will be the 10-year anniversary of the death of Ken Lee and Lionel says his presence remains with the business. “When you come to our board room, my dad’s chair is still there – the old Nylex chair with Ken Lee written on it with Artline pen – and his two judge’s gavels that he used jokingly to keep people quiet during meetings. “Dad always liked discussing things face to face and then making his own mind up; a good learning experience for me. Dad used to always say you should ‘talk things through, but at the end of the day, it is your business and you have to make a decision – sometimes people like it and sometimes they don’t’. “When I first started, my father put me in every role in our business, ‘You need to learn the business’ he used to say. One of my first roles, at the age of 18 was working in the delivery trucks for eight or nine months with our now ops manager Peter Braithwaite delivering double door refrigerators up four flights of stairs in 30 degree heat, getting screamed at by customers for being late: it was fun and tough at the same time… and unbeknownst to me, all that time I was learning about our business.”

WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Lionel said the death of his father and then in quick succession, his brother Greg in 2013 “took the wind out his sails”, but it also provided him with a different perspective on running the business and life in general. “It made me realize that there is more to life than work. I think if there is anything I would like to say to both retailers and suppliers it is to make sure you have your work-life balance. People need to understand the family side of their lives is as important, if not more important, than their work side.

“I remember as a 26 year-old wanting to take over the world, I wanted to go national, open stores here and there. We only get one life, so make the most out of it.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF NARTA

Lionel says the involvement in the Narta buying group remains one of the strongest partnerships for the Bing Lee business. “Our business would be nowhere without Narta and I am very proud to be a member of the Narta board. Narta are and have been integral in Bing Lee’s success and longevity, led by Kay Spencer and now by Michael Jackson. The whole Narta team does a great job and at the end of the day they are there for the retailer and I think that suppliers

“While the radio ads are scripted, they are recorded exactly how she talks to me on a daily basis – i.e. like a 12 year old!! “Everyone wants to talk to Mum and that creates a wonderful feel-good factor when she visits stores and talks to the staff. Everywhere Mum goes she makes people smile. She makes me so proud and I love her very much. Mum is the matriarch of the business and having her presence in the business is very important to us all. Mum is the only shareholder I need to look after and answer to, and that’s a really comforting thing. In the same way, she knows our management team goes to work trying to do the best they can, and that’s all we ever want.”

Bing Lee recently opened its Miele Specialist store in Drummoyne, Sydney

who don’t utilise Narta to their fullest extent may be missing out.”

YENDA LEE – LIONEL’S MUM

Ken Lee’s wife Yenda is also known affectionately by Bing Lee staff and customers as ‘Lionel’s Mum’ following an ongoing series of radio advertisements featuring Lionel and Yenda that resemble a typical motherand-son relationship. “When Dad died, to make sure Mum was involved in the business I thought of putting her in our radio ads, and since then she has become a bit of a celebrity, culminating in a 10-part radio skit Modern Fam Bing Lee, by Fitzy and Wippa broadcast on Sydney’s Nova FM.

THE FUTURE

So could there be another person from the family to run the business? Lionel hopes it will be one of his children. “Hopefully some, if not all of my kids who are now 24, 22, 20 and 18 will be in the business or run the business in the future. The three eldest are involved and I have always said I want them to go into business, but I want them to get a degree first and achieve something for themselves. As a family business, we don’t want to be the biggest or the slickest – it is about making sure we keep an eye on the numbers and make reasonable profit to ensure the business is rock solid so that the 603 staff can continue to support their families. www.applianceretailer.com.au

AR PROFILE and you create this progression to the point where we have some customers that follow certain sales staff and store managers to whichever store location they go, based on the trust and relationships they have built. “I’m sure every business has this, but our industry is a people industry; it is about talking, communicating and listening. Taking a sale for a customer is flattering because they are putting their trust in you. “We must recognise that every customer has choice, and they could have bought that fridge from several different retailers, but when they choose us, we can’t let them down.”

SUPPLIERS

Bing Lee CEO Lionel Lee with his brother Greg, and father Ken, celebrating the retailer's 50th anniversary in 2007.

“And hopefully Bing Lee keeps going into the future so we can celebrate our 70th or 75th anniversaries. If we get to 50 stores great, if we get to 45 that’s fine as well. We will continue to grow our business as the opportunities arise because in this industry it is important that you maintain scale to compete against the larger players. “The uniqueness of our business is based around how we run it as a family business. I don’t have to report to any board and as a result there is no infighting and we are very lucky in that way.”

BING LEE IS NOT FOR SALE

“At the end of the day, Bing Lee is all about the people and the families in our business – that’s why we keep going. Bing Lee is not for sale, and despite some past rumours, I have not thought of selling the business. Why would anyone want to get into this game!!! In my first interview, after my Dad passed away 10 years ago, one of the newspapers asked me, assuming that we would sell, ‘what will you do with the business?’ My reply was that the business is not mine to sell – this business runs for the benefit of our staff – that’s why we run it and that’s why we all work in it. My responsibility 26

is to give back to our staff what they have contributed to the business. Our staff give their lives for our business, some have been with us for over 35 years. “Through personal hardships in their day to day lives, the self sacrifices that they make, the ownership that they take for our business; our staff are relentless and continue on… we will never forget this. I have been in the business since I was 18 and I have loved almost every minute. “I have been very privileged to be in the position of having a family business in our industry – the camaraderie, the life experiences, the wonderful friendships and relationships created, all from selling fridges and televisions.”

CUSTOMER FOCUS

“We are not rocket scientists, and we aren’t saving lives – it is pretty simple stuff. I have always said, “At the end of the day we buy stuff and we sell it, and along the way we strive to give good customer service so that the customer comes back. “If you make the customer happy and that person comes back – that is the ultimate compliment. And better still that customer brings their kids in,

Appliance Retailer November / December 2017

“Bing Lee is 60 years old and we have so many people to thank for this, however as I have said before, without our suppliers, we wouldn’t have a business. My earliest work memories are of my Dad’s relationships; the fun and the laughter mixed with business with the likes of Harry Marr, Jim Hankinson, Paul Cross, Ross Morgan, Mike Church, Charlie Carter, John Riley, Warwick Richardson, Peter Lee , Graham Day, Trevor Carroll, Harry Yokoi just to name a few who have enabled our business to remain standing, whilst many have failed. For this we are ever thankful, and whilst we go forward, we will always remember where we came from and the brands such as AWA, Sharp Corporation, NEC, Westinghouse, GE, Lemair, Gorenje Pacific, Philips, Panasonic, Sanyo and Sony, who supported us in the early days. “To those retailers that think their brand is more important than a supplier’s brand, you do so at your own peril. n obsession with coffee among Australian consumers continued in 2017, according to Euromonitor senior research analyst, Hianyang Chan. “Coffee machines continue to evolve as consumers’ appetite for high quality and a café like experience from the comfort of their home grow in popularity. “Consumers value an automated, digital experience in brewed beverages to make the process both stress-free and more consistent, enabling the trial of new flavours and styles of coffee with the push of a button,” he said. The latest data from GfK confirmed that there are no signs of a slow-down in the coffee category with espresso machines experiencing a 10% jump in value and 4% growth in units.

Solo traditional (manual) machines had the biggest value growth compared to other types at 21% and it is now 36% of the market in value. The average price for solo traditional also had the largest growth compared to other types, growing by 11%. Although single serve (pod) machines saw modest growth, it is still leading the espresso machines market in actual units and value. Fully automatic is the only segment that had double digit growth in units at 15% and leads the pack in terms of highest average price at $1,134. Nespresso continues to offer solutions for a variety of consumer tastes and preferences, including its Essenza Mini, the Creatista in partnership with Breville and the Lattissima range. Consumers are getting better educated about portioned, fully automatic and manual

coffee machines with all categories playing a significant part in providing choice to the Australian consumer, B2C commercial manager, Nicole Parker said. “Sales growth by all inhome coffee machine categories this year tells me they all have an important role in our market; there is not one category that is better than the other.” De’Longhi claims to be the key driver of the fully automatic segment with growth of 10% for the 12 month period ending August 2017 and believes increasing consumer demand in this segment will have the greatest impact on the category this year. Breville has experienced a 30% lift in value share during the same period, with 40% value share of the total espresso machine market, and 54.2% value share of the combined espresso pump portion closed (capsule) and pump traditional (manual) market. Appreciation for café quality at home A RECENT NESPRESSO STUDY SHOWED THAT 88% OF AUSTRALIANS LIKE THEIR COFFEE WITH MILK AND 75% TAILOR THEIR COFFEE BEVERAGE BY ADDING DIFFERENT TYPES OF MILK, NON-COW’S MILK, SUGAR AND OTHER SWEETENING SOLUTIONS.

T

here is an increasing need from Australian consumers to personalise their coffee, according to Nespresso’s Nicole Parker. A recent internal study into Australian coffee consumption habits showed that 88% of Australians like their coffee with milk and 75% tailor their coffee beverage by adding different types of milk, non-cow’s milk, sugar and other sweetening solutions. “We also know that many Australians continue to enjoy a traditional long cup of instant coffee at home,” she said.

“With the introduction of the Essenza Mini, Nespresso’s smallest ever machine, we are continuing to drive innovation as well as appeal to the millennial consumer entering the category for the first time. Our Creatista machine range, released in late 2016, remains popular among coffee lovers who enjoy the ritual of preparing latte art, and the Lattissima range continues to prove its popularity for convenience-driven milky coffee lovers,” she said. Coffee sourcing is another area of focus for Nespresso and its AAA Sustainable Quality Coffee Program is key to customer coffee education. “The program has over 70,000 farmers across 12 countries adopting sustainable farming practices to ensure the highest quality coffee. This dynamic, constantlyevolving approach integrates emerging thinking on quality, productivity and

sustainability, and always takes into account social, environmental and economic factors,” she said. De’Longhi senior category manager, Allison Cupillari is pleased with the state of the coffee market and the growth opportunities it currently presents. “We are feeling very positive about this trend continuing and there is a lot of potential to convert more people from café and instant coffee drinkers to the at-home coffee machine market,” she said. “Australians have a strong café culture which has led to a greater appreciation for a good coffee and this search for great coffee leads people into the fully automatic category. With this interest however, there is a need to help consumers navigate market segments or they will purchase machines that don’t deliver what they want and will likely leave the category,” she added.

with more than half of Australians having a coffee machine at home. Surprisingly, coffee is most enjoyed at home, with 86% of Australians who drink coffee indicating they will make a coffee at home on a usual weekday and three quarters of consumers have at least one cup of coffee a day. Australian consumers have a very diverse and sophisticated coffee palate, Breville business manager, beverage and toast, Athena Kalos said, and while milk based coffee remains popular, interest in black coffee is growing. “Consumers who enjoy milk based coffee still find milk texturing the most challenging element of the process. Breville addresses this challenge with its two new coffee machines, the Oracle Touch (BES990) fully automatic and the Barista Touch (BES880) automatic manual. Both machines provide consumers with

touch screen control and exceptional milk texturing capability for professional results,” she said. It was noted by KitchenAid that Cold Brew is one of the fastest growing segments within coffee with sales growing over 580% in the US from 2011 to 2016. In Australia, the category is valued at over $200 million in grocery, according to recent data from UK-based research firm, Mintel. “We are starting to see this growth with more coffee shops offering Cold Brew as well as on-the-go solutions in grocery,” senior category marketing manager, Filiz Bensan said. “We are excited to introduce Cold Brew to Australian coffee enthusiasts as a new way to treat themselves to a cold brew coffee beverage in the comfort of their own home,” she said. KitchenAid general manager for APAC, Kay Oswald added, “Cold Brew is one of our key launches globally in the specialty coffee segment. It goes with our overall direction to become a more holistic player in the breakfast category. “The idea behind Cold Brew is to tap into and create an entirely new segment moving into summer, speaking to a slightly younger audience at a very attainable price point. Coffee is not new for us, but this is a new category within coffee and we are taking the entire segment very seriously,” Oswald said. Since launching Cold Brew in the US earlier this year, sales have exceeded expectations and it has become one of the company’s leading products in the category in driving incremental sales. “We anticipate the same results here as it will enable retailers to create a whole new conversation around coffee,” Bensan added. In the eight months since the Smeg ECF01 50s style coffee machine was launched and then awarded the Red Dot Design Award, sales have exceeded all expectations with stock sold out on several occasions, with current indications showing sales are still on the rise, head of brand, Tamara Buchanan said. “Coffee lovers have become instant fans of the machine’s retro design by Milan’s Matteo Bazzicalupo and Raffaella Mangiarotti of Deep Design

This continues to drive key trends with artisan expectations around quality, origin and new experiences with consumers valuing quality as paramount,” he said. “We continue to see these trends permeate with consumer expectations evolving over time through continued premiumisation to higher quality, ongoing growth of organic premium coffee, as well as growth of capsule and mixes segments,” he added. The trend from capsule to manual espresso machines has continued to grow, according to Sunbeam category manager for cooking, coffee and seasonal, Daniel Aylward. “This strong growth in the manual machine sector is reflected in Sunbeam’s value growth rate of 13% MAT,” he said. “Café culture and the coffee experience is embedded in Australian daily life, and consumers want to bring the café style machine and taste into their home. As consumers see their coffee being made by their local baristas on manual machines each day at the café, the manual coffee machine process is no longer a mystery. Today’s coffee machines not only need to have the ease of use and technology to produce a superb tasting coffee, in modern kitchens they also need to be stylish to earn their place as the hero product on the benchtop,” he added.

Kylie Taylor – Miele.

Purchase decisions have become more considered as Australians seek coffee machines that provide value for money and feature the latest in technology, according to Miele product manager for built in and refrigeration, Kylie Taylor. “As a result, the most popular coffee machines deliver quality, ease of cleaning and maintenance, longevity, visual integration into the kitchen environment, and of course, great-tasting coffee specialties equal to those of the best cafés.” AR 32

EHP is also seeing strong sales for the bottom mount category and side by side owners are moving across to French door models, according to category manager, John Henley. “EHP can offer retailers fridge ranges covering all price points with Electrolux at the premium end, Westinghouse catering for the modern family and Kelvinator at the economy end.” Modern, open plan living, plus a focus on healthy eating are key emerging trends, according to Panasonic. Firstly, appliances must look good, provide the capacity to 44

store food for the family and last but not least, be energy wise. “A focus on style means French door models have become increasingly popular,” product marketing manager for whitegoods, Chasnyn Ousmand said. Panasonic research has shown that 33% of Australian households have at least two or more refrigerators. Home Appliances, with its Lemair brand, has seen good growth in the past 12 months through the release of a smaller chest freezer range added to its popular upright freezer line-up, retail sales director, Matthew Vozzo said. He pointed out that there is still a lot of demand for coloured finishes on matte and gloss designs. While focus for Lemair has been directed at smaller capacity refrigerators, the recent

appliances at the top end of the market and increasingly, these consumers seek stylish looking, time and labour-saving appliances that incorporate high-value technologies,” she said. Sales in NSW are currently outperforming some of the other states with the major contributing factor being completion of big residential building developments. Fisher & Paykel, recently named the best refrigerator brand by Choice, said the changing role of the kitchen space as the heart of the home is a major influence for consumers when it comes to selecting these appliances. It has resulted in customers, architects and designers looking for appliances that can be easily integrated into the kitchen, product manager, Jeff Punzalan said. “Australian customers are looking for freedom and flexibility when designing their kitchen and creating space for their appliances. Up until now, truly integrated refrigeration was unattainable because complicated and extensive remodelling was needed for a fridge to be built into surrounding cabinetry.”

Liebherr also places importance on customised refrigeration options with healthy lifestyles and fresh food a priority, according to national sales manager, Andrew O’Brien, who added that minimising household waste was another important consideration. “Our visual ‘shop in shop’ displays, located in premium retail showrooms, showcase the range to their full potential, allowing the retailer to take the customer on a journey viewing freestanding and fully integrated refrigeration products. itsubishi Electric launched Argent Silver in October following research that found there was demand for a product with the look of stainless steel, but not in its raw form. Instead, the silver is behind glass front panels and is said to be easier to keep clean. Argent Silver will be available for LX630, WX500 and WX743 models. Another recent release is the MR-LX630 multidrawer. It was designed specifically for the Australian market, based on local research, working with retail partners and feedback from customers. “The design concept is fresh convenience using the best of Japanese technology,” Garth Hickey said. Features include toughened glass front panels as French doors open to 760mm wide shelves, for holding large platters and bulky items. Separate externally accessible vegetable and freezer drawers make finding stored items easier and save energy as the main refrigerator compartment is not opened, preventing cooling loss. The French door range has also been expanded with the MR-WX500, a 500-litre version of the popular MR-WX743Y 743-litre model. Designed for smaller homes and units, the MR-WX500 has a compact footprint keeping the best features of the 743-litre model, such as non-plumbed automatic ice makers, externally accessible vegetable and freezer drawers, a 4.0 star energy rating, and Versa drawer. These also accommodate triple zone cooling, multi-function touch control panels and holiday power save mode for efficiency and convenience. He said the main reason Australians upgrade to a French door model is for the larger fridge and freezer capacity. AR REFRIGERATION Mark Beard. Some of the prominent features in the flagship RX730GAXX are stylish, fully mirrored glass French doors with swipe-to-open technology and soft touch drawers that open effortlessly. Other models in the range sport sleek tempered glass French doors, and are available in black or white. The vacuum and Aero-care vegetable compartments have an innovative platinum catalyst that sustains food freshness and nutrients. Technology in the vacuum compartment extracts air to keep meat and fish fresher for longer while Aero-care retains moisture to extend the life of fruit and vegetables. The rapid freeze drawer sends chilled air directly to the freezer compartment. Other core features across the range include an auto icemaker and triple deodorisation filter. Paired with top-of-the-line vacuum insulation panels and an advanced frost recycling cooling with hybrid defrost, chilled air is evenly and efficiently distributed, while preventing food dehydration.

Every Hitachi refrigerator has dual fan cooling, one for the refrigerator and the other for the freezer, independently cooling each compartment. The growing demand for colour and vintage design in the kitchen has thrown a spotlight on Smeg’s range of retro refrigerators, comprising the FAB5, 42-litre and FAB10 135-litre bar refrigerators; the FAB28, 248-litre single door refrigerator/freezer; the FAB32, 328-litre two door refrigerator/ freezer and the FAB50. The FAB50, the largest of the FAB models, is a familysized, frost-free, 338-litre capacity refrigerator with a 135-litre capacity top mount frost-free freezer. “Originally available in a select choice of authentic retro colours, white, silver and cream, the addition of black has dovetailed into the current designer crush for all things black, in particular Smeg’s Victoria range of freestanding and built-in ovens plus rangehoods, dishwashers and the highly successful retro small electrical appliances,” Tamara Buchanan said. The RRP was recently changed to $3,990, from $6,290. LG is expanding its Dual Doorin-Door feature, which responds to consumers’ desire for easy access to snacks and drinks while minimising cold air escape. This feature is available on side by side and French door ranges, catering to the varying needs of Australian consumers who can now access this feature across multiple refrigerator designs. LG recently launched the Signature brand, comprising a 700-litre French door with InstaView Door-in-Door, a feature that expands on the Door-in-Door feature. With two quick knocks on the mirrored glass panel users can see inside the quick and easy access compartment for snacks and beverages, without opening the door. This reduces cold air loss to help keep food fresher longer. Miele Integrated Refrigerator KFNS 37692iD The LG 725-litre is the world’s first Dual-Door-in-Door refrigerator with built-in Bluetooth with a soundbar for entertainment value. “A refrigerator is a major appliance purchase, and consumers want a refrigerator that can grow with their lives,” Brad Reed said. The latest addition to the EHP French door fridge collection, the WHE6060SA, has a through-door water dispenser and automatic icemaker in the freezer, designed to maximise fridge storage capacity within the standard Australian residential refrigerator space of 90cm. According to John Henley this is possible as heat is dispersed through the rear of the appliance and does not require as big a ventilation gap on the sides. “Put simply, this means its huge 605-litre capacity can be accommodated within the same space that was required for smaller capacity fridges. For this

reason, we believe it will be a big winner in the replacement market, as well as generally, for this and its other consumer benefits,” he said. Panasonic has launched a new range of premium French door refrigerators with full-flat glass panels in three, 547-litre models in sleek black, stylish silver and classic white. The company has drawn on its extensive history of over 50 years in refrigeration innovation to create these latest advanced models, Chasnyn Ousmand said. The refrigerators sport a flat, seamless design, and offer consumers a capacious fridge that can still fit into their standard kitchen space. Panasonic’s Prime Fresh technology lightly freezes food, extending food life and maintaining flavour, while Fresh Safe stops fruit and vegetables from premature spoiling. “Like most changes to the appliances in the home, refrigeration is no different in offering more streamlined designs to keep clean lines within the kitchen space,” according to Matthew Vozzo. Home Appliances recently released Lemair top mounts fitted with recessed handles on door fronts while the LTM459W has the handles positioned on the side of the doors. “We are seeing a lot of attention on the four door refrigerator and French door models due to their flexibility over side by sides that cater to larger families,” he said. Today’s consumers are very conscious of rising energy costs, is the view from Miele. “The desire for ‘green’ living continues to gain popularity and consumers are increasingly demanding products that save time, money and valuable resources,” Kylie Taylor said. Demonstrating Miele’s commitment to sustainability, Miele’s K30000 integrated refrigeration range includes the top-of-the-line KFNS 37432iD with 3.5 star energy rating. Working with leading kitchen designers in both and Australia and New Zealand, Miele’s latest research specifically focused on identifying potential opportunities for future design improvements. “The outcome clearly validates Miele’s approach to future design modifications with recommendations raised in this process to be incorporated in new Miele product developments,” she said.

Fisher & Paykel’s ActiveSmart technology is its key innovation in refrigeration. This technology senses every time the fridge door is opened, keeping an even temperature by effectively controlling the “weather” to deliver better food care. The microprocessor controls how the refrigerator operates based on changing patterns of use as the sensors continuously sends information to the microprocessor, which analyses and adjusts the fan speed and compressor operations accordingly to deliver a consistent and stable temperature. Its ability to respond to daily use means it only uses the energy needed to keep food fresher for longer. Making it easier for customers to achieve a seamless look, the Fisher & Paykel ActiveSmart French Door Slide-in was designed to be integrated behind custom cabinetry. Liebherr BioFreshPlus technology provides greater flexibility and control for ideal food storage conditions with an independent electronic control system, particularly suitable for temperature sensitive tropical fruit. The technology is available across the Liebherr range of 60cm, 75cm and 91cm cabinets in both integrated and freestanding product design. Advances in design include the new ‘MagicEye’ electronic control fascia, that allows the electronic display to be read from any angle, twin LED column lighting to eliminate blind spots and directional light positioning. Changhong has brought in a frost-free four door fridge, CFD463S (RRP: $1,599) in a choice of silver or black/white glass. It is the first refrigerator to be launched here under the company’s CHiQ sub-brand and features an energy efficient inverter compressor, multi airflow cooling, LED display and Leco system to prevent food odour transfer. The new four-door joins side by side, bottom and top mounts, pigeon pairs, chest freezers and bar fridges for the local market. R

efrigerator sales are tracking well through the Winning Appliances group with a consistent uplift in business, head of buying and marketing Sam Zalin told Appliance Retailer. And what was clearly evident from our Refrigeration Feature in this issue was confirmed by Zalin, and that is customers are steering away from side by side models to French door fridges. Asked what features are the most important in purchasing a refrigerator there were no surprises with capacity, size and energy efficiency nominated.

Smart technology is still not grabbing consumers attention just yet but is poised to become a big opportunity in the future, Zalin said “These have just hit the Australian market but we expect to see an in an increase in demand over the next couple of years. “Some of the smart tech features that will be in demand include camera technology where you will be able see what food you have left when you’re in the supermarket on your phone, fault diagnosis for any service issues and screens on refrigerators which allow you to access supermarket or shopping sites, see weather, access diaries for family, etc. “Trends we have observed however include advances in food preservation, multi-zone technology, integration with

other appliances and cabinetry along with customisation and flexibility with layout and colour and finish options.” Online sales are increasing especially since Winning Appliances became transactional in July offering customers the opportunity to purchase selected brands online. This has resulted in a significant increase in whitegoods and refrigeration purchases in recent weeks, he said. “And one focus that has not changed is that consumers still want value for money in their fridge purchase.” While promotions are less relevant in refrigeration, these do come into play when customers are buying packages for renovation, he added. And the biggest selling brands? “Fisher & Paykel, Liebherr, Smeg and Sub-Zero.” AR

he latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) puts the value of the domestic wine market at $2.8 billion. Australian wine sales in the domestic off-trade market grew by 1.3% in volume and 4.2% in value in the 12 months to July 2017, according to figures from IRI Market Edge Liquor. This equates to an additional 460,000 cases of Australian wine being sold in the past financial year and suggests there is a lot of wine going into Australian households. Data from the International Wine and Spirit Record (IWSR) shows that per capita wine consumption in Australia increased to 29.6 litres per annum in 2016, the 16th highest in the world. The IWSR forecast wine sales will continue to grow here by 1.4% per annum over the next five years. Another positive indicator is the 52

BY KYMBERLY MARTIN trend towards drinking higher priced wines with local wine sales above $10 increasing by 8% in the 12 months ended July 2017, according to the most recent IRI data. A recent report from Wine Intelligence showed the number of Australian consumers who drink sparkling wine at least once a month has increased to 5.7 million, with consumption up by more than the category as a whole. It should come as no surprise that wine coolers/ chillers are one of the faster growing categories within the refrigeration market and on these figures have plenty of potential to grow. “Factors supporting this growth is the broad and ongoing increase in home entertaining and the food and wine culture,” Euromonitor senior analyst, Hianyang Chan said. “The consumer base is also expanding beyond wine connoisseurs

and collectors, appealing to a growing group of consumers who are increasingly aware and appreciate the importance of proper storage conditions,” he said. Australia's growing appreciation for wine means more people are adding to their collections faster than they are drinking it, was the view put forward by Eurolinx marketing manager, Daniel Bertuccio. “ILVE has been promoting wine cellars and beverage centres on the Good Food & Wine Show circuit to an affluent wine audience,” he said. Vintec brand manager, Thibaut Caumont, attributes the growth of the wine preservation category to a better understanding of wine cellaring and the benefits of climate controlled wine cabinets by consumers. “Initiatives from the wine industry on educating wine lovers on the art of cellaring also contribute to drive sales.” AR

urolinx re-launched into the wine cellar and beverage centre category in early 2017 with ILVE and Artusi. “Since the range was reviewed, rationalised and diversified, we have seen good growth for our brands in this category and with the addition to the range coming late 2017 to early 2018, we expect this growth to continue,” Daniel Bertuccio told AR. “We included our wine cellars and beverage centres in our ILVEnista social campaign with an entertaining focus and created a tutorial with a sommelier educating consumers and followers about wine,

from basic storage to food pairings.” He said sales in Victoria and NSW have been moving along nicely which could be attributed to the climates being more suited to drinking wine. “Considering the category is still in its infancy, all states are travelling well.” A new Artusi beverage centre will be launched in December. Compared to 2015, Vintec is now experiencing an increase in volume of sales of under-benches and higher capacity wines cellars, according to Thibaut Caumont. “Wine preservation solutions have become a top-of-mind appliance for wine enjoyers and wine cabinets owners are increasingly looking at upgrading the capacity of their Vintec after having outgrown their wine collection.” A wine cabinet has a natural place in living/ entertaining areas and designers are

now automatically integrating wine cabinets in keys-in-hands projects, he said “Our existing customer collections’ are also growing and we are encountering more second and third timers when it comes to the acquisition of Vintec wine cabinets.” Hisense head of marketing, Andre Iannuzzi said in addition to adding the ‘wow’ factor to the home, wine cabinets are widely recognised as the best way to protect a wine collection. “Discerning home owners are responding by seeking out the best cooling technology for optimal storage. Becoming showpieces in their own right, sleeker and smarter designed cabinets integrate seamlessly into the kitchen. Keen wine connoisseurs often keep a small collection at the ready in these cabinets, with a larger under-house cellar housing their full collection.” Home Appliances product and marketing manager, Darren Sharvell, believes the category is still rather specialised with more players entering the market each year. “Consumers now have an array of options when it comes to selecting the right wine or beverage storage solution that works with the decor of either their home or office. It’s very much a personal choice, and the consumers’ palate will ultimately determine the type of wine or beverage solution they select. The popularity of wine clubs together with the growth of the butler’s pantry, bar areas and alfresco kitchens have been significant driving factors in the growth and interest in these products,” he said.

Thibaut Caumont – Vintec.

Wine cabinets have often been considered the ultimate luxury appliance to have, but as these become more affordable, consumers are not afraid to incorporate a model in their homes, whether it is in the kitchen, dining or alfresco area, De’Longhi category manager, Jessica Hull said. “Following the launch of De’Longhi’s new kitchen appliances we are rationalising our wine cabinet range and working to introduce new products that will complement the latest appliances.” One of the newest entrants to the market is Dimplex. We are expecting big things from the new beverage centre.” He said ILVE is looking at expanding its range with alternative finishes to suit various kitchen designs. The Vintec/Transtherm team is currently working on a range of higher capacity wine cabinets. A new finish is also an area of focus along with the “dream of launching a connected wine cabinet in the near future”, Thibaut Caumont said. Vintec is perceived as a trend-setter when it comes to consumers choosing the right wine cabinet for their needs and also as an alley for their wine journey, he said. cooking appliance that will cook, brown and reheat food to perfection.” This year, Miele has continued to experience growth in microwave oven sales. “Customers not only appreciate the quality and speed of food preparation but also the sleek design, colour options and range of installation combinations with other appliances in the Miele Generation 6000 range,” product manager for built-in and refrigeration, Kylie Taylor said. “The desire to cook healthy, nutritious dishes at home continues to grow significantly while, at the same time, consumers increasingly seek stylishly-designed, time and labour-saving built-in appliances that incorporate high-value technologies,” she added.

“Microwaves are a highly mature market and therefore, manufacturers are gearing toward various options, styles, and designs to differentiate product offerings.” – Bestlink, Henry Chang.

LG focused a great deal of attention on the microwave category in 2017 with the recent release of the NeoChef range, senior marketing manager, Brad Reed said. “This range is specifically designed to add a touch of design and class to the category, and significantly grow the LG presence. We are extremely pleased with the results to date as our expectations are being met. “LG understands that consumers are on the go more than ever before and need a microwave that can do more than just reheat food. Consumers want a microwave that offers a wide range of cooking capabilities to help them prepare meals faster, efficiently and easily,” he said. Panasonic is a global leader in the market and this year sees the 70th anniversary of the microwave. It is estimated that around 9 out of 10 Australian households own at least one microwave. “This technology has evolved considerably. For example, Panasonic’s combination microwave range now offers the opportunity to bake, grill, steam and microwave all at once,” product marketing manager for microwaves, Nicolas Cauzac said. “Adventurous cooking continues to be propelled by celebrity chefs, cooking shows, social media, exciting restaurant openings, farmers’ markets www.applianceretailer.com.au

SHARP HAS EXPERIENCED

AN INCREASE IN INVERTER

Recent survey results from Sharp indicated that consumers are not using their microwaves to full potential. In addition to this, there are still some misconceptions that radiation emitted through microwave cooking will affect the nutrients of the food and therefore, microwaves cannot provide healthy meals. With rising demand for builtin design, Omega Appliances introduced a new fully built-in microwave, OMW34X, in the second quarter of 2017. “Its modern design is perfect for complementing other kitchen appliances and is an ideal offering for those with limited space, for example studios or small apartments. There has been a strong increase in the NSW market with builders and developers for this type of product,” Shriro product manager

R995D and R820E series, which has received a positive consumer response, according to head of consumer electronics, Hans De Jong. Sharp has experienced an increase in inverter sales in comparison to 2016 as consumers want to get more out of their microwaves. “With Sharp’s smart inverter technology consumers can defrost food perfectly thanks to the continuous flow of true power levels as heat is distributed evenly throughout the entire process. This technology also ensures faster cooking and reheating, reducing typical problems such as uneven cooking results and the development of hot spots in microwaved foods,” he said.

and retail sales executive for Neil Perry Kitchen, Blanco and Omega, Rachelle Reynolds said. Neff now offers a built-in compact oven with traditional hot-air cooking, steam and microwave functionality. “As space comes at a premium, the trend towards built-in appliances continues to rise, and so too does the priority of space optimisation. Therefore, built-in microwave and steam ovens are in high-demand as they free up bench space and offer versatility,” Neff and Siemens marketing coordinator, Emma Bradley said. AR

Travis Whiley from Wangaratta Bi-Rite Home Appliances

M

icrowaves are an important category for Wangaratta Bi-Rite Home Appliances, northeast of Melbourne. They create foot traffic flow and sell themselves as a must-have appliance, according to proprietor, Travis Whiley. “One minute there is a stack of microwaves but a couple of days later they are all gone. Consumers are aware it is not viable to get them repaired and the average sell price of a new microwave is around $200 in our store so it is a no-brainer to buy a new one,” he said. “Microwaves provide a constant turnover and I do not foresee growth or decline as the majority of Australian households have one and cannot be without it. We offer a

loan service to our customers with microwaves that have become faulty under the warranty period due to the fact that they would have to be one of the most used electrical appliances in every household,” he added. Whiley noted that white, medium sized microwaves are the store’s biggest seller as customers like to purchase appliances similar to others they have owned as they understand how to use it. “Control panels on microwaves from brands such as Sharp and Panasonic have not changed much over the years,” he noted. However, Panasonic Flatbed design was highlighted as a key product innovation “as consumers do not have a plate to clean or drop and break”, along with LG microwaves that have a round internal cavity to accommodate larger containers.

“When I started in the industry over 25 years ago, convection microwaves were a huge seller and I have seen an increase in enquiries around these products. I predict some resurgence and new ideas in the future for convection microwaves,” he said. And when asked about promotions: “Most of them revolve around a redemption for tupperware or microwave containers, which is a great combination as it allows the consumer to go home with a full fresh start – a new microwave and bonus new containers. Who doesn't like something for nothing that always helps close a sale?” Although promotions do not have a significant influence on the purchase decision, Whiley described them as a “little sweetener” for a quick and easy sale. MOBILE PAYMENTS 2017 not yet the tipping point in Australia

Norrelle Goldring looks at the reasons behind the leisurely progress of mobile payments in Australia There’s been an increasing amount of noise about mobile payments over the past year or two. Yet in Australia, mobile payments only accounted for 4% of retail transactions in GfK’s Australia Futurebuy 2017 study (August 2017

SO WHAT’S GOING ON? WHY THE SLOW MOVEMENT TO MOBILE PHONE PAYMENTS?

The swift rise of convenient ‘tap & go’ credit and debit card payments is one potential reason. According to the 2016 Reserve Bank Consumer Payments survey, 60% of all Australian point of sale credit card payments in 2016 were contactless, equating 33% of all point of sale payments, with 85% of those surveyed using their contactless credit cards on a daily basis in 2016. GfK’s Futurebuy data indicates something similar, with 32% using cash, 32% using debit/credit cards, and 32% using contactless debit/credit cards – higher than similar markets. Another reason is that the mobile payment platforms are fragmented, and yet to consolidate. Various banks and some retailers have payment apps. The problem is, shoppers don’t want thousands of apps on their phone

data). And this figure hasn’t moved since the previous two years’ studies. Why the lack of movement? It’s not like Australians are averse to new technologies. Actually the opposite is the case; we are typically one of the faster nations on the planet for technology and device adoption. Part of the issue may be Australia’s historic early adoption of convenient payment technologies and innovation by the banks. We were one of the first globally to have ATM networks in the

where some apps are accepted by some retailers and other apps are accepted by other retailers. They only want a couple of apps that are accepted everywhere. The ubiquitous, omnipresent distribution of PayWave is one of the keys to its success. The success of payment platform consolidation is proved by what’s happening in China, which leads the world in mobile payments. According to GfK Futurebuy, 32% of retail transactions in China were paid by mobile in 2017 – up from 21% in 2016 partly due to the omnipresence of WeChat and Alipay. Instore, the payment platforms have been activated outside of the checkout. In chain supermarkets in Shanghai WeChat and Alipay offer visible discounts on various products at the shelf. Whichever payment provider offers the best total basket discounts at the checkout is typically selected by the shopper.

mid-late 1980s. We’re one of the world’s top credit card using nations, with high personal debt levels to prove it. And we’re one of the top ten countries least likely to use cash. The Australian Reserve Bank’s Consumer Payments 2016 survey suggests that cash use as a percentage of transactions has decreased from 69% in 2007 to 47% in 2013 and just 37% in 2016. According to the RBA, in 2016 an Australian wallet contained $40, down from $55 in 2013.

The third potential reason for slow take-up in Australia is data security concerns. On the plus side, a quarter of GfK Futurebuy’s Australian participants want to make mobile device payments whenever possible (skews to generations Y and Z), and more than one-third think that mobile payments are more efficient, faster, all in one place, and easier than other payment methods. But these individual benefits are outweighed by the nearly twothirds worried about their personal information when using a mobile payment app. Fewer than a quarter thought that mobile device payments were 100% secure. Now that we’re seeing the launch of well-known payment platforms like Apple Pay and Google/Android pay in Australia, the mobile payments needle may start to shift in the near future – if the distribution increases fast enough.
