HVG delivers quality Australian owned and operated, HVG offers a comprehensive range of technology and solutions to its graphic arts customers

P

ROVIDING a wide range of products and services, HVG Graphics Media continually looks for ways to help its customers reach their

goals. HVG serves as diverse a group of customers as you could find. Richard Lucas, general manager for HVG Graphics Media, says, “Our customers include digital, label, screen, and offset printers; sign companies; fabricators; shop-fit companies; and anyone involved in visual communication, whether it be internal or external, or from the smallest label to the largest banner billboard.” To provide quality service to this range of clients requires a commitment to excellence and no small amount of organisation. HVG Graphics Media has six main pillars in its product range. In its wide format portfolio, these include Digital Print Media, Banner & Fabric Media, Substrates, Sign & Reflective Media, Adhesives and Tapes, and lastly, to make up the sixth pillar in the range, the recently added Hardware. Lucas says, “Our products are all sourced from long time suppliers to our business, who have provided consistently reliable products over many years, or new wide format supply partners who manufacture products to suit the emerging print technologies and applications. “We represent and distribute products from highly reputable suppliers including 3M, 3A Composites, Flexcon, Lintec, MCT,

Part of the HVG team, from left: Bernadette Kember, Daniela Mastroieni, Richard Lucas, Bob Ryan, Samantha Wong, and Trent Byrnes Mactac, Molco, Nanya, Re-board, Ritrama, Roland, Soyang, tesa & Verseidag. The high quality brands 3M Envision, Dibond, Dilite Digital, Decobus, DISPA, FOREX Print, FOREXlite, Foamalite, FomeCor, KAPA, Gatorfoam, Penstick, Re-board, REVolution, SAFARI, seemee, Smart-X & VIEW range.”

Trust in quality QUALITY matters at HVG and so does repeatability. Lucas says, “Our business purpose is ‘Quality leading products and brands, delivering consistent results…time after time.’ “HVG Graphics Media offers a wide range of products that customer know and trust, whether it is thousands of metres or thousands of sheets, or just a few metres or a few sheets, we ensure that they achieve the same quality of result throughout their production cycle.

Our suppliers are innovators, none more so than 3M, 3A Composites, and MCT, who have continually invested to provide new products that offer customers many benefits. “These may include time saving features, for instance 3M’s Envision range of films, or superior print surfaces such as 3A Composites’ KAPAplast and FOREX Print, or different structured materials for weight saving and environmental considerations, such as 3A Composites structured paperboard DISPA.” With a 40-year presence in the graphics market, HVG has managed to not only remain relevant but also to expand. He says, “Our ability to evolve and adapt is a significant factor in allowing us to remain relevant to our customers. “Our range is continually being updated as technology constantly evolves, and, as mentioned previously, innovation is a crucial

HVG – 40-years young and Australian owned LAST year, HVG celebrated its 40-year anniversary. Richard Lucas says, “We are proud to still supply and distribute products from our first supplier to the business, Flexcon, who supplies self-adhesive film products from Spencer, MA, USA.” HVG Graphics Media’s parent company Sanwa Holdings is a 100 per cent Australian owned private company. HVG itself (Halifax Vogel Group) has grown out of three companies and traces its roots back to its establishment in the mid‐1950s, Halifax Group was acquired by Sanwa Holdings in 1988. 2

L Vogel & Son, established early 1970s, was acquired by Halifax Group in 1994 to form Halifax Vogel Group. The Group acquired Alucobond Architectural in 2007. Headquartered near the Sydney airport at Turrella, HVG employs more than 200 staff. In the last 15 years, it has become a national company selling and servicing its customers directly to market. In 2011, HVG sold its New Zealand operation to Blue Print Imaging so it now has a 100 per cent focus on the Australian market. Lucas lists the HVG advantages:  Diverse and complementary product range

 Strong sales and marketing focus  History of proactively sourcing and launching new products suitable for the Australian market  Long term supplier relationships  Well educated, customer focused team members  Long term stable management  A solid track record of integrating acquisitions and new products into the existing organisation  Over 26,000sqm of warehouse space in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Adelaide and Perth australianprinter.com.au

time after time applications, including window, wall and floor solutions. The HVG portfolio expansion is further exemplified by its development of floor graphics films over many years. Almost 20 years ago, HVG merely supplied Flexcon’s Safari dual film combination for supermarkets and point of sale floor advertising. Two decades has seen the evolution of Savanna as an outdoor advertising solution for events and functions, all of which meet Australian Standards for pedestrian safety.

Media and applications

Re-boardroom: HVG supplies Re-board, an engineered fluted board designed for 3D applications part of our supplier’s DNA. New developments and market demand determine how and what materials we select for our portfolio. Our customers always need to produce faster and more efficiently and we rarely see things standing still in the visual communications market.”

Growing the portfolio DIVERSIFICATION and developing an expanded range of products and services enables HVG to share its vision with its customers. Lucas says, “We are expanding our portfolio in wide-format hardware, initially with a very innovative digital cutting table from MCT in the US. We see a lot of wide

format print capacity in the market. However, the bottlenecks often arise in the finishing area. In addition, print buyers want new designs to stand out, so they are asking print service providers, ‘What’s new? What’s different? How can you help me innovate?’ “In line with this demand, we have launched the award winning VersaTech2 finishing system from MCVT.” (see coloured box on the next page) He adds that the further expansion HVG’s product portfolio with the recent launch of Mactac’s range of self-adhesive films, delivers customers products that cover a broad range of print technologies and also cover a wide range of

HVG Graphics Media stocks a wide range of printable rigid substrates to cater for all types of applications, both internal and external, and for short-term or long-use. The company says that choice is paramount with many options to suit pending the application; where and how the product will be used; and along with whether the sheet remains flat, is fabricated or is made into a 3D application will ultimately determine the product choice. For example, the HVG range of ACM aluminium composites materials runs from Dibond FR used in corporate identity projects, both internally and externally, through to Dilite Digital and its VIEWpanel range to suit all applications and budgets. As with its other products, the focus remains on printability and “delivering consistent results… time after time”. The same applies to the company’s expanded PVC portfolio with the leading market brand FOREX Print used widely in retails and point of sale to deliver the advertisers message. Continued on page 4

a strong market reputation and national footprint – we are leveraging this now more than ever. I really enjoy contributing to this successful 40 plus year-old business as it continues to evolve and prosper." HVG Graphics Media general manager Richard Lucas adds, “We are excited that Adrian re-joined our team after having worked in our Melbourne office over 12 years ago. "Adrian returned to HVG with an abundance of both knowledge and experience, to help us build growth across the board. We look forward to his entrepreneurial vision enabling and innovating growth in our business.” Based in the HVG head office in Turrella, Sydney, Morris works with the HVG Graphics Media team across its core markets in digital print, sign and reflective, banner and substrates. MCT Digital VersaTech cutting covers a range of applications HVG has the Australian agency for MCT Digital’s VersaTech digital cutters. MCT Digital's patented dual belt technology for laser cutting is designed to increase productivity and throughput when processing roll-to-roll fabrics/textiles. HVG Graphics Media general manager, Richard Lucas, has great expectations for this launch, and for the ability to provide HVG’s customers with a whole new range of products and capabilities. “We are excited to announce our first move into supplying hardware to the Australian graphics market, by signing an exclusive agreement with MCT. VersaTech2, MCT’s next generation cutting solution, has received the SGIA Product of the Year Award for Digital Finishing, boasting a high strength, and light weight gantry for cutting speeds and accuracy. Lucas says, "The American engineering and manufacturing results in a robust and industrial system. This cutting solution perfectly complements

Capability: the latest VersaTech cutting table will fill a hole in the market our wide range of substrates and our everexpanding printable fabric range. It offers something truly distinctive as it has the ability to cut by knife, laser, and high powered router. The use of such a wide array of tools on one system means a vast range of materials can be finished on this system. It allows customers to distance themselves from square metre

commodity printing to more profitable areas such as textile manufacturing for retail branding, and 3D design for the POS market.” MCT describes the digital cutter as a true all-in-one solution to encompass all of its customer's needs, which offers the highest degree of value retention and investment security; a robust, industrial system that will hold up to the wear and tear of your everyday work. VersaTech cutting systems use three ply architecture. The lightweight aluminised belt system consists of replaceable laced panels and a zippered connection that allows for easy removal and re-installation. MCT says the VersaTech2 is the only cutting system that incorporates full conveying for laser, router, and knife cutting in one system. It uses a centre driven motorised unwind unit for roll to roll textiles and a sheet feeder for boards. MCT Digital offers standard table sizes and custom table sizes and now up to five metres wide.

HVG offers an enormous choice of foamboards, with KAPAplast being the go to foamboard of choice for printability with a high print resolution both sides. Fome-Cor, FOAM-X Print and Gatorfoam sheets offer many different choices pending the applications, and when the requirement is for lightweight, great printability, flat and rigid signage, HVG suggests SMART-X as it retains excellent structural integrity being smooth and flat. SMART-X is used widely in longer term internal retail signage to carry strong branding and advertising messages. DISPA is the new paperboard of choice, being stable and flat when double side printed with amazing graphics. Easy to print, cut and hang especially for double sided hanging point of sale panels in supermarkets and big-box retailers It is 100 per cent paper-based, from FSC certified sources, and 100 per cent recyclable. A structured paperboard, DISPA can be used both flat and also creased to form simple 3D shapes. Re-board is an engineered fluted

board designed for 3D applications suitable for furniture, shop-fitting, point of sale displays and multitude of applications.

Meeting challenges HVG helps businesses in the industry to deal head on with the challenges that confront them. Lucas says, “Without doubt our customers face many challenges. Throughout the country, we frequently hear from customers facing short lead times, which in turn places them under enormous pressure. By having national warehousing, a wide product selection, depth of stock, and now a selection of innovative hardware, we are able to help alleviate that pressure. "In an industry that is constantly changing, our customers must innovate to stand out, and are able to do so by working closely with HVG Graphics Media. "One of the largest challenges our customers face relates to fire safety

both inside and outside buildings and in corporate identity branding. This will determine that many more materials in the near future will need to be FR certified and tested to the appropriate Australian Standard. Our experienced, knowledgeable and passionate team, we hopefully able to provide guidance and confidence to our customers in the choices they make.” The company continues to keep its globally sourced product portfolio in tune with the latest and best available. As digital print technology continues to advance, emerging and growing trends such as soft signage become more prominent. Lucas adds, “At HVG Graphics Media, we have a national footprint with sizeable warehousing and significant stock holding in each state. Thanks to this, customers are able to rely on us to supply what they need, when they need it. Each pillar of our business offers a variety of product, catering to a variety of customer needs.”

NEWS Publisher’s Comment

THE only constant is change. (Actually, there’s also death and taxes, but I’m not going there.) Change can be for better, or for worse and as we near the end of the second decade of the 21st century, change is speeding up to the point where old paradigms of predictability and stability are being shaken to their foundations. As a result, both people and businesses are often uncomfortable operating in the new age of uncertainty. Nowhere is this more evident than in print or publishing. Change is raising great challenges for those who have legacy technologies from the analogue era or work practices and procedures as well as a go-tomarket which has not kept pace with the “I want it and I want it now – and I want it my way” world. Darwin showed us in The Evolution of Species that those which adapt to changing conditions and circumstances tended to survive and thrive, those which did not became a distant memory. Only the fittest survive in nature because they have adapted to the changing habitat. Businesses are similar to species; the more nimble a business, the greater its chances of survival because it can quickly adopt and adapt a path to take advantage of changing conditions. Change is giving print professionals new and exciting enabling technologies that can power their entry to new verticals, higher margins, and opportunities. Expect to read much more about the latter in AP in the months and years to come.

Newspaper printers in mass job losses AUSTRALIA’S two newsprint behemoths, Fairfax and News Corp, will be sharing their print sites, with Fairfax to close both its Beresfield, Newcastle facility, along with Ormiston in Brisbane. Fairfax says around 120 permanent and casual staff will be impacted at the closing sites, with 70 at Beresfield to be affected. It remains unclear how many employees from Beresfield and Ormiston will be kept. The AMWU says that Beresfield will be closed on September 14. Compounding the job losses in newsprint, printing staff will be slimmed at Seven West owned WA Newspapers, with around 40 redundancies to occur over the next two months. The move comes as the Community Newspapers Group is ending five of its 17 local newspapers covering the state. The mastheads to be slashed from September 3 are The Comment News, The Advocate, Hills and Avon Valley Gazette, Midland-Kalamunda Reporter and the North Coast Times. Fairfax estimates it will save $15m in the full-year from the print sharing deal, which has caught the AMWU off guard, as it says it learnt of the decision just prior to the announcement. Lorraine Cassin, national secretary, AMWU Print Division, says, “We were blindsided by the announcement this morning. Out of work: Newspaper printers at Beresfield, Newcastle redeployment opportunities are identified. Cassin says, “The AMWU has massive concerns for these workers’ futures and it was a source of distress that a major publisher like Fairfax Media was making printers redundant. “Fairfax Media has indicated all affected employees will be paid their full entitlements but we know that these closures will hit hard and we will be working with the company to identify redeployment opportunities. “While Fairfax Media has stated that the rationalisation is designed to affect efficiencies, we urge the company to recognise that its highly skilled printers have given loyal service to the newspaper industry over many years.” “The AMWU will be consulting with Fairfax Media on any further changes to the operation of its North Richmond plant as the Sydney Morning Herald and Australian Financial Review transition to printing on News Corp’s Chullora presses.” The move, both organisations

Fairfax says all print produced for its Australian Community Media (ACM) division at Beresfield is being moved to Tamworth and North Richmond sites in NSW, with metro work transferred to News at its Chullora facility. Fairfax print work produced at Ormiston will be transferred to News plants in Murrarie, Yandina, Warwick and Townsville in Qld, with some being moved over to Fairfax’s site in Tamworth. Fairfax’s Metro papers currently produced at North Richmond - The Sydney Morning Herald and the Australian Financial Review will be now be printed by News at its Chullora print site. News Corp will also be moving some of its printing to the Fairfax North Richmond site.

PIAA backs energy market changes THE PIAA has backed the 56 recommendations made by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) following its inquiry into the Australian electricity market, but says it does not go far enough to solve immediate issues. Commercial and industrial customers, the heaviest users, could see electricity costs

decrease on average by 26 per cent, says the ACCC, which describes the current market as broken. The body says if adopted, its recommendations will save Australia’s 2.2 million small to medium businesses could save an average of 24 per cent on their electricity bill. Hunkeler taking over DocuTrim

Inkjet surging past $100bn by 2023

HUNKELER is taking over the complete sales and service business for the DocuTrim sheet finishing system from Müller Martini (Muller). This follows from Müller purchasing the Kolbus bookbinding line in January. Hunkeler will initially take charge of the business across Europe, following which it will take it over in other markets. DocuTrimm, which was developed by Müller, has already been on the market for some time. Thorsten Piel, director, Müller, says, “This agreement represents a consistent step in the expansion of Müller’s global activities. Müller will benefit from Hunkeler’s worldwide sales and service network, whereas Hunkeler will be gaining a firstclass product in the DocuTrim.” Michel Hunkeler, CEO of Hunkeler AG, says, “This sales partnership lays the foundation that will enable us to provide new, innovative solutions to the highest standard in the digital sheet finishing segment. The DocuTrim perfectly complements our Generation 8, POPP6 and 7 continuous-feed product lines.” DocuTrim is a multifunctional system for online sheet finishing and meets all requirements in the areas of cutting, perforating, creasing.

THE global market for inkjet printing will grow at a rate of 9.4 per cent year-on-year and will be worth US$109bn in 2023, according to Smithers Pira report The Future of Inkjet Printing to 2023. The projected growth is in stark contrast to the print industry as a whole, where Smithers Pira predicts growth occurring at 0.8 per cent annually. The report’s author contends that in 2018 the total value of inkjet printing in graphics and packaging applications will reach US$69.6bn, with a total print volume equivalent to 749 billion A4 prints. This volume will consume some 103,700 tonnes of ink, with the end-users spending $8.7bn, while the market for new inkjet equipment will be US$3.6bn. Dr Sean Smyth, print consultant, Smithers Pira, says “The economics and reliability of inkjet are consistently improving as a result of heavy investment in printing heads, machinery, inks and drying systems, associated software and – increasingly – substrates. There is strong growth across most of these disparate activities because the non-impact process is flexible and capable of printing at high-quality and speed, making it suitable to print many products, while the cost position is becoming more

that neither side of politics understands economics 101, they have continually interfered with markets which is why we have rising energy prices. “Now, to fix the market swiftly, as it needs, they will have to interfere further. “The only way to do that, which is where the report has not gone far enough, is that the Government needs to not only

guarantee investment in ondemand power, but supporting the investment themselves. “They have set the precedent for the past decade, so it is nonsense to say they do not interfere. “Industry is bleeding, people are losing jobs, and consumers are suffering. “It is one thing saying it, and another to deliver it.”

Industrial print opportunities: Printed solar panels economic against most analogue printing alternatives. “Inkjet is winning market share from analogue processes as well as opening up new applications, with new routes to market and workflows developing. In packaging, changing retail supply chains along with strong growth in e-commerce – now including mobile-enabled m-commerce – are pushing further adoption of inkjet as brands and retailers look to communicate with end users in new ways. Equipment manufacturers and converters are exploring new functions enabled by versioning and personalisation on packs as packaging is used in new ways to engage with consumers.” With the potential of inkjet – principally in short

run and variable data printing – increasingly appreciated it is changing printer business models, and disrupting established supply chains. Smithers Pira says while advertising will continue to be the largest end-use application across 2018-2023, the most rapid growth will come from wider use of inkjet in packaging, books, and commercial printing, with developers working to incorporate inkjet in 3D printing, biomedical printing, ceramics, glass, and decor print. and printed electronics. Many of these opportunities will require integrating the inkjet process with robotics aligning with the wider Industry 4.0 trend. Future growth opportunities are critically assessed within the report.

Scott installs Screen CTP SCOTT Print has installed a Screen PlateRite HD PTR8900N-S CTP device complete with an MA-L8900 autoloader, replacing two older Creo platesetters. The setup enables three cassettes of up to 100 plates to be loaded automatically for a total of 300 plates, or 500 when adding two extra cassettes. John Scott, general manager, Scott Print, says, “We have been 22

happy with the performance of the Superia plates, particularly with our UV inks. “With the upgrade to the Screen platesetter from Fujifilm, we have greater productivity, increased uptime and higher overall consistency. “The support has been outstanding and with the lochem Superia ZAC processing system, our chemical and water use is minimal.”

Scott Print has constructed a new plate room as part of its refurbishment of the iconic Aberdeen Street, Perth premises. Bringing printing to full view at the front of the premises, with wide glass expanses, has created a more customer-friendly experience, moving away from the dark arts image of the past. Dean Metcalfe, prepress manager, Scott Print says,

“With the introduction of our new platesetter what we have noticed most is the speed it can output plates, this has dramatically improved on our press downtime. The autoloader also allows us to continue making plates even when the machine is in operation, this is something we could not do in the past. Going from two machines down to one - we now only have one plate processor.” australianprinter.com.au

Heidelberg boosts sales, result in Q1 THE Asia Pacific region is driving growth at Heidelberg, as the company increases its net sales and operating result in the first quarter of the 2018/2019 financial year, pinning the success on its new subscription model, along with its Primefire digital press. Incoming orders improved in the first quarter, which covers April 1 to June 30 on the

EU calendar, by 6 per cent to €665m. Heidelberg says this growth is made more impressive by the fact that the previous corresponding period (pcp) figure of €629m benefited from the Print China trade show. EBITDA excluding the restructuring result for the quarter came in at €20m, €6m higher than the pcp result of €14 million, bringing its EBITDA

Adobe updates PDF print engine

Spot installs Anapurna H2500i

ADOBE has announced version five of its PDF print engine, APPE 5, which it says can render graphically rich jobs across flat and contoured surfaces including paper, plastic, fabric, metal, ceramic, glass, and food products. Adobe says “The new system offers high-speed edge enhancement, including antialiasing for visually smoother edges on graphic objects, even at lower resolutions, reduces processing times to a fraction of the time compared to alternative and post-rendering methods. “It has enhanced Unicode support, including control parameters, file paths and passwords now include multi-byte characters from non-Roman character sets, which increases ease-of-use in languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean. “The PDF 2.0 print feature support includes Black Point Compensation to preserve details in image shadow areas during colour conversions; CxF-defined spot colours (colour exchange format) to enable spectral-based colour management; HTO (half-tone origin) to align pre-imposed objects to the device pixel-grid, ensuring identical line-screens.” Adobe says its new version extends PDF Print Engine’s colour reproduction capabilities.

SPOT Productions, based in Brisbane, has installed the state’s first Agfa Anapurna H2500i LED press, combining it with an Agfa Acorta cutting table. Spot managing director Simon Carmody says he made the installation to be able to offer his clients high-quality wide format print work, as he was previously outsourcing it. He says, “Customers require a complete solution, one point of contact, one supplier to fulfil their requirements and expectations. Especially with national customers with numerous delivery points. Service and quality with time saving is the key to increase market share along with a simple solution to attract new clientele. “Wide format is the biggest growing market in print. Our capacity is strong now, and we have secured campaigns across offset, digital, and now wide format. We also have a lot more installs, and point of sale work. “It gives us simplicity, where customers can give us all of their work. In the past we outsourced some of the products, but now we can do it all ourselves. We can combine a letterbox drop with point of sale, traditional cutsheet work and wide format. “So it closes the loops for large customers and their campaigns.

margin up from 2.8 per cent to 3.7 per cent. In the Asia Pacific, sales were up from €133m in the pcp to €172m, accounting for a substantial share of Heidelberg’s growth, which the company attributes mostly to business in China. The region now accounts for 32 per cent of the company’s revenue, up from 27 per cent in the pcp.

Suited to needs: Simon Carmody, with the Anapurna press “We have national retail customers, multinational corporates, as well as direct clients and advertisers. “Agfa is a strong brand, and we have enjoyed a strong relationship with them across our plates and imaging and are happy to continue that. “It has been up and running for six months now, and the return has been substantial. Turnover in wide format display is increasing month on month which is great.” The Anapurna H2500i LED offers six colour + white, hybrid board/roll printing at up to

The net result after tax remains in the negative, improving by €1m from the pcp, coming it at €-15m from €-16m. The first quarter brought in the first revenues raised from subscription contracts, which generate recurrent sales over a term that usually lasts five years. The order backlog grew by 18 per cent to €714m, surpassing the previous year’s result of €603m.

115sqm per hour. The Acorta is a 3000mm x 2000mm conversion table, complete with auto recognition systems and a multi tool cutting head for creasing, milling materials up to 50mm thick. It is capable of cutting speeds up to 102m per minute. A spokesperson from Agfa says, “By utilising the latest curing technology, the H2500i enables the operator to print on corflute, composite panels, acrylics, foam PVC, banner stocks, paper, SAV, and heat sensitive stock.” Carmody says,“The Anapurna LED H2500i suited our needs. The LED curing technology is a perfect fit for us, especially taking into account the diverse range of medias and stock we use on daily basis. The Acorta cutting table adds value, and the only thing that holds us back now is imagination. Creativity, shapes and dimensional finishes all happen on-site.” Michael Culver, inkjet sales manager, Oceania, Agfa, says, “Working with Agfa’s commercial clients is an important part of our Inkjet growth strategy, especially as our markets continue to cross over. Spot are a loyal and dynamic customer and we are excited about their plans. “The Anapurna solution offers clients diversity and flexibility.”

Fairfax sees revenue decline FAIRFAX saw its total revenue fall 3.1 per cent for the FY, from $1.74bn to $1.69bn in its most recent results. The company had a net loss after tax of $63.8m, compared to a positive result of $83.9m in the prior corresponding period (pcp), partly attributable to its decision to separate Domain, giving the profitable property publishing business its own ASX-listing. 24

EBITDA excluding significant items for the FY had a slight bump from the pcp, rising 1.2 per cent to $274.2m. Reflecting a decline in print volumes, newsprint and paper costs fell from $92m to $82m, despite paper prices worldwide increasing over the year. Fairfax notes Printing Australia had external print revenue growth of 14 per cent with new and returning

customers. Revenue from external print work, which is completed on the company’s presses when they are not producing mastheads, grew by 12.5 per cent across the business, from $46.1m to $56.8m. Greg Hywood, CEO, Fairfax, says, “Our three publishing businesses are emerging from a period of great change. “Each is profitable, generating valuable cash flows

and positioned with distinct markets, products and strategy to leverage growth. “What they have in common is an ongoing emphasis on digital publishing, continuing focus on cost and efficiency, initiatives to maximise print earnings; and a focus on developing new revenue opportunities. “Over the past seven years, we have taken the big decisions.” australianprinter.com.au

Fairfax to go in Nine deal NINE has made a bid to buy Fairfax, under which Nine shareholders would own 51.1 per cent of the merged business, which would operate under the Nine name. The Fairfax name is set to go in the deal, while Domain and shared entity Stan will be majority-owned by Nine. All of Fairfax’s print assets will be owned by Nine.

The Nine CEO, Hugh Marks, will lead the merged business, with three Fairfax directors joining the board. It will be chaired by current Nine chairman, former treasury Peter Costello, and also include two more directors from Nine. Fairfax has said it expects to achieve $50m in cost savings over two years, but has not elaborated on where they will

come from. Australian Printer contacted Fairfax to ask on what the deal would mean for its print divisions, and workers, but did not receive a response. Staff across its printing sites were informed they would be losing their jobs as it announced plans to share presses with News Corp, with few opportunities left in the country for newsprint

workers. As part of the arrangement Fairfax closed its Beresford facility along with its Orminston site. The AMWU has warned against offshoring of positions in the Fairfax print divisions, calling for any efficiencies gained from the merger to not come at the expense of further reductions in the quality of print journalism.

Graph Pak brings back laminating films

Industrial action ends at NPA

EQUIPMENT and consumables supplier Graph Pak has brought back its laminating film portion of the business, and sold 55 tonnes since February. The company will be supplying films produced by Cosmo, which it says is the world’s biggest manufacturer in its market, operating across Korea, India and the US, publicly listed on the Bombay stock exchange. Owner Tom Ralph says, “We have reopened Graph Pak laminating film supplies. It was running 2005-2012, and then sold to BJ Ball, we had to sit out a five year period and have reopened this year. “I sold it for economic reasons at the time, having received a good offer from BJ Ball. I also had some personal things going on that time, including my divorce.” Ralph says he expects the velvet/soft touch laminates to be the most popular, as they have taken off in the Australian market. He says, “We will have gloss films, matte films, the best Velvet SoftTouch film available, as well as all of the films for digital printing presses and specialty applications. “Print has gone boutique, so printers want something to marry up with that ideal. The soft touch and velvet films have taken off well.”

WORKERS at Note Printing Australia have agreed to a new contract, accepting a pay rise of 2.5 per cent as opposed to the 3.5 per cent they were advocating for. The pay rise also includes a wage index backstop, meaning that if inflation is higher than 2.5 per cent, the wages will increase in line with the figure to ensure workers are no worse off. AMWU organiser Mick Bull says the agreement followed from threats of being locked out indefinitely by management, following the decision to lock out workers for the day on August 10. Bull says, “The workers are disappointed that the Reserve Bank said everyone should have a 3.5 per cent increase, but they are not practicing what they are preaching.” After almost three months of protracted action, NPA improved its offer to the workers to include five days of stand alone domestic and family violence leave, as opposed to its original offer, in which the additional leave was only available once all other leave had been used. Workers had argued that it was of no use adding the extra leave if it was only accessible after other leave was used, as it would further disadvantage people suffering from domestic violence.

Standing in solidarity: Locked out workers at Note Printing Australia As part of the deal, the NPA offered casual conversion changes including instantaneous conversion to permanent work for some long-term casual workers. Tony Piccolo, assistant state secretary, Print, AMWU says, “It was pretty galling for the workers to hear the RBA Governor call for 3.5 per cent pay rises in one breath, and then refuse that same pay rise to their own subsidiary’s workers in the next. “Just yesterday we heard again that Australian wages are basically going backwards – not keeping up with CPI and cost of living. “But in the end it was not just about the pay rise. The workers were willing to accept 2.5 per cent as long as they received the

upfront domestic and family violence leave clause in their agreement and secure jobs for casual workers. “Maintaining financial independence and support from their workplace is critical for people trying to escape situations of family violence. We had workers at NPA who previously didn’t have access to upfront family and domestic violence leave when they needed it, so it was paramount that they won this entitlement. “It really should not come to this, for workers to have to strike and sacrifice a few days pay to win a fair wage rise in their agreement, when everyone agrees that Australians need a pay rise. It is another clearcut example of why we need to change the rules.”

WTO ruling kills cigarette printing THE World Trade Organisation (WTO) has upheld Australia’s plain packaging laws for cigarettes, killing the possibility of the print work returning to the country. With the ban being upheld by the WTO, there is zero chance of cigarette packaging printing returning to Australia, as the higher-end finishing and print work previously seen has been replaced by uniform colours 26

and graphics, which can be completed cheaper overseas on a larger scale. Much of Australia’s cigarette printing was produced by Anzpac, which was last year sold to a Hong Kong investor, with half of its staff being made redundant. Anzpac was founded in 1900 as a family owned business Deaton & Spencer. It was bought by its major

August 2018 - Australian Printer

customer cigarette manufacturer Rothmans in 1986, which merged with British American Tobacco in 1999. In 2004 it installed the world’s longest KBA 142 press which came with multiple print and coat units. By 2005 it was one of the top three Australian packaging printers and produced the packaging used for cigarettes across the country. However a

decline in cigarette consumption and latterly the plain packaging laws made most of the new press virtually redundant, so the company switched to other packaging sectors. Anzpac was sold in 2008 to the New Toyo Group for $60m. New Toyo is currently producing the plain packaging used in Australia’s cigarette packets, although it is no longer done in this country. australianprinter.com.au

New organisation promoting print VISUAL Connections, along with the Australian Sign & Graphics Association (ASGA) and Re-Engineering Australia (REA) have appointment the Australian School Industry Partnership (AusSip) as Industry Education Liaison Manager. The newly created national role is designed to help increase awareness of opportunities in the industry to schools, TAFES and universities and strengthen ties between industry and schools to promote careers in the graphic arts. Karen Goldsmith, general manager, Visual Connections, says, “What they do at the

moment is provide a bridge between industry and schools. They go out to schools, do a lot of work placement, talking to kids, giving one on one advice on careers. “The partnership adds another string to the AusSip bow in terms of knowing another industry, and talking to kids who have a creative bent or will be a good fit for industry. “A lot of the KPIs have not been worked through yet, we will work with ASGA and Visual Connections members. National Print winners to display in Parliament

QLM builds $1.5m Cambodia factory

THE Printing Industries Association of Australia (PIAA) is set to showcase the winning pieces from the National Print Awards in Mural Hall, Parliament House, saying it has hopes of sharing the best in print with politicians and policy makers. The Print to Parliament exhibition will open at 7pm October 17 in Canberra. Andrew Macaulay, CEO, PIAA says, “There will be an exhibition of the winners in Parliament House, where politicians will get the opportunity to see work from the industry. “The politicians will see further evidence of the print industry as a progressive large nationwide sector, which employs tens of thousands of people, and as such demands the support of the country’s leaders. “We are inviting our members to write to their MPs. Every suburb has a printer, printers should have a stronger voice and MPs should know and hear their voice.”

QLM Label Makers (QLM) is continuing its expansion in South East Asia, opening its $1.5m site in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Simon Pugh, CEO, QLM Group says, “We have looked to Cambodia as a market with exciting growth potential. We will be providing quality materials and converting equipment, something the market has been wanting for some time.” The new facility combines digital and analogue label printing equipment, as well as a range of equipment targeted specifically to the garment industry, which QLM says is one of Cambodia’s largest industries. It also is host to the country’s first HP Indigo Digital Label Press, as QLM looks to the premium embellishment market, and roll-to-roll printing to shake up print work in the region. Lindsay Nutley, marketing manager, QLM, says, “This is our first factory in Cambodia. Through our Vietnam factory we have had a number of sales enquiries and this was to satisfy that demand. “The market is divided into

It is no good getting kids if there are no spaces in Tafe for further training. So part of that is talking to them and learning what models are available in print and signage, and then providing that link back to schools. “With REA we are working to link industry and schools with

the competitions they run. We have members who help out with graphic design competitions that run in school. AusSip will also be working with schools to do that. “It is brand new, it is hard to know where the need is until people start looking. But we know we are not an industry that kids know about as being a great career path.” The longer-term goal of the appointment is to influence enrolments in print, sign and graphic apprenticeships, increase school-based apprenticeships and to create a greater awareness of print.

Celebrating the opening: (l-r) Sokun Tep, Simon Pugh, QLM two main areas: FMCG and garment. Some of the garment labels and tags may be used to supply to companies from Vietnam. “The HP Indigo Press was about providing full-colour, high quality and fast printing options. The HP Indigo is ideal for the garment industry where serialisation and sequential numbering and barcodes are

used extensively. The HP Indigo was installed and is supported by Rieckermann. “The new site currently adds 20 employees to the group. There are plans for further equipment upgrades.” Sokun Tep, general manager, QLM Cambodia site, says, “The market is highly competitive and to compete our facility needs to be modern and efficient.”

Ali Moosani, president, Blue says, “In today’s complianceconstrained and ecommercedriven environment where consumers ceaselessly look for something new and novel, packaging artwork and labeling continues to be a bottleneck in the new product development and commercialisation process. Blue helps users collaborate faster and more accurately so they can launch new products.”

Esko buys Blue ESKO has acquired Blue Software, a label and artwork management software company based in the USA. The company says the acquisition deepens its product packaging investments, and will help solve bottlenecks in designing novel packaging artwork and labelling, allowing customers to launch newer products, more frequently, at lower costs. 28

Udo Panenka, president, Esko says, “We are relentlessly seeking to reduce time to market, cost and quality risk in the end-to-end packaging value chain. The acquisition of Blue enhances Esko’s set of tools to enable brand owners and their partners to improve all three. “Our software and hardware solutions digitise, automate and connect the packaging development and production

AGS introducing Printed battery research receives federal funding latest Watkiss AUSTRALIAN Graphic Servicing (AGS) is introducing a new Watkiss booklet maker, the PSQ160-WH, which it says has wider range of applications for digital printers. As more digital presses from companies such as Canon, Konica Minolta, Ricoh and Xerox can print duplex on long sheets, AGS says there is a growing demand for A4 landscape and other large format booklets. Paul Attew, sales director, Watkiss, explains, “The handfeed PSQ160-WH is ideal for this type of application. It is a practical solution for low volume digital printed jobs, where ease of set-up and flexible media sizes are important - and where you can be confident that book quality is never compromised. “Superior book quality is a feature of all PowerSquare booklet makers.” The Watkiss PSQ160-WH is an all-in-one booklet maker that includes face trimming and square spine forming integral to the machine.”

BRISBANE start up Printed Energy is receiving government funding to further development of its screen printed batteries. The money comes as part of a $7.5m initiative to fund research for advancing power storage technology. Printed Energy’s research, in partnership with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the University of Queensland, falls within one of two major initiatives receiving the backing. It is associated with the new Australian Research Council (Arc) Research Hub at UNSW, which will be getting $3.1m under the scheme, for printed batteries and other storage technologies in the works. The batteries are produced with roll-to-roll presses, in a thin, flexible format, which Printed Energy says can be adapted to almost any shape, with potential applications including powering smart cards and wearable devices, to large scale solar panels and energy storage. Josh Frydenberg, Minister for the Environment and

Roll-to-roll presses produce batteries: Printed Energy developing tech Energy says, “We know the huge importance of energy storage, especially into the future as our energy sector continues to transition. “I expect researchers to work with the energy sector to progress innovations in energy storage technologies such as printed batteries, structural supercapacitors, fuel cells and power-togas systems. “Working closely with industry this Hub will at the forefront of developing more

cost effective energy storage solutions that also allow for better integration into the future energy grid.” Roger Whitby, CEO of Printed Energy says, “The highly innovative nature of this technology makes it ideal for powering sensors, devices, disposable healthcare devices and eventually, even for largescale application to help manage the intermittent nature of electricity generated by solar panels.”

Landa gets $300m for nano print LANDA has received a US$300m boost into its nanographic print manufacturing business Landa Digital Printing, with German entrepreneur Susanne Klatten tripling her initial US$100m investment from four years ago. Klatten’s US$300m investment, made through her Altana chemicals company and her Skion private fund, gives

her a 46 per cent stake in the business, with Landa himself holding the majority 54 per cent. Reports in Israeli media value the business at $US1.8bn. The Israeli manufacturer says it will use the latest cash injection to finance the expansion of its infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities, as well as its continuing R&D and market development.

Landa says its nano presses, which use tiny droplets of ink, will have the quality of offset, the speed of offset and be able to print on offset stocks, but with all the benefits of digital; primarily no makeready and the ability to print variable data. Landa first launched the nanographic concept at drupa 2012, and saw some 400 printers, including several

Australian companies, stump up $10,000 for a place in the queue. Since then, progress has been slower than expected as the company has attempted to conquer the myriad obstacles in physics and chemistry. Despite the challenges, the first beta presses - the S10 single sided carton printing systems are now running, one in Israel, one in Germany.

Kurz expands American print association picks best tech foil team FOIL and security print supplier Kurz has hired Adrian Barbero as technical specification manager, and Justin Alderton as sales manager, with both operating across New South Wales and Queensland. Barbero has previous experience in packaging and design, having worked as the national key account manager and B2B sales person at Orora. Stephen Pratt, managing director, Kurz Australia, says, “Adrian Barbero is perfectly suited to this newly created role as he has previously engaged with brand owners and designers, holds a degree in biotechnology and has vast experience in packaging, manufacturing and project management. “His expertise in packaging and design will help all stakeholders arrive at the ideal solution to represent their brand.” Justin Alderton will be responsible for sales of the Kurz hot and cold stamping foils across packaging, fashion and plastics. Kurz says the role will also involve educating and advising customers about the company’s Trustconcept solutions for brand protection, anti-counterfeiting, track and trace, and customer engagement.

PRINTING Industries of America has picked 12 recipients for its 2018 InterTech Technology Award, one of the print industry’s most prestigious prizes. The judges picked tech they deemed to be truly innovative, and expect to have a major impact on the industry. A mixture of software, and hardware made the cut, including EFI’s Nozomi press, the Heidelberg Primefire, MGI Jetvarnish 3D web, and Fuji Xerox (Xerox) Iridesse. With the Iridesse, Judges pointed out that the press can lay down six colors in a single pass, including CMYK, gold, silver, or clear, with spot-on registration at 120 pages per minute. One said, “The fact that users can quickly swap ink positions makes its capability for producing stunning specialty effects even greater, super sharp images can be printed in Ultra HD resolution. It has innovative engineering and is able to do things that no other digital production press can do.” In software, the winners include printQ 3D Packaging Design, by CloudLab, an ecommerce focused application which designs cartons and packaging products, with a 3D visualisation. One judge noted, “The user experience is impressive, I was able to design a box in a matter of minutes.”

Awarded: Fuji Xerox Iridesse

The Rapida LiveApp, by press manufacturers Koenig & Bauer, allows users to control and schedule maintenance of Rapida sheetfed offset presses via a mobile device. The app lets operators start, stop, and make press adjustments when away from the console. Judges pointed to the maintenance feature that makes it easy to document issues and communicate them to Koenig & Bauer. The other piece of software awarded is Circle PersonalEffect Edition, by XMPie, who come under the Xerox banner. It is used for designing, deploying, and measuring personalised omnichannel marketing campaigns, automating digital and print. With the four/six colour EFI Nozomi C18000, the judges noted as one of the first presses designed to meet the requirements of corrugated production, the press is an

innovative solution that will help converters capitalise on the demand for shorter-run, versioned, and variably imaged boxes. The B1-size Heidelberg Primefire 106 was picked for its quality monitoring system, and use of the company’s existing press platform and prepress workflow, making it simpler to add into sheetfed pressrooms. It images seven colours at 12000 dpi, and reproduces 95 per cent of Pantone spot colours. With the JETvarnish 3D Web, made by MGI Digital Technology, judges pointed to its ability to add stunning embellishment effects to labels. and flexible packaging substrates via a digital narrowweb process. It can produce 2D/3D dimensional, tactile textures, and personalised, embossed foil in one pass without dies or expensive tooling.

Print businesses bite the dust ROAD Signs Australia, Biz Media, and Revesby Print & Mail have been placed in liquidation, with another business Posh Printing in administration as the industry continues to be under the siege from smaller margins. The four companies span the country, with Road Signs Australia based in WA, Biz Media in Queensland, Posh in the Sydney CBD, and Revesby 30

Print & Mail also in Sydney. Both Biz Media and Road Signs were placed in liquidation on the same day. Road Signs Australia produced road signage, alongside hand/grab rails, cones, and called itself Western Australia’s leading company for the supply and installation of road traffic signage of all types. The liquidators, Palisade

Biz Media, which traded as Biz Promo, was in the letterbox delivery game, offering distribution across all states, with its heaviest concentration in Sydney, NSW, Melbourne, and surrounding hubs.

Posh Printing, the biggest player of the four, is continuing to trade as the administrators, Worrells, seek proof of debt by July 23. It is across wide-format, stationery, corporate print work, alongside standard commercial print offerings. Revesby Print & Mail has had a long process, with liquidators originally being appointed in 2016. australianprinter.com.au

Tafe installs Waratah donates to Breast Cancer Network Epson dye-sub THE Fashion Design School at Sydney’s Ultimo Tafe has installed Epson SureColor F-series dye sublimation fabric printers for students to use in their coursework. Alexander Zehntner, Tafe NSW, says, “FDS Ultimo TAFE had invested in an Epson F-Series dye sublimation printer when we upgraded and started delivering the Bachelor of Fashion Design to enable training with the latest industry technology standard. “Our students use the Epson dye sublimation printer to realise their original art works for individual custom design on fabrics for fashion and interior products. Last year FDS Ultimo TAFE also used Epson EB-L1505UNL projectors at our final year fashion show in an inner city warehouse space to project students work onto distressed walls as people walked into the space.” The SureColor F-Series printers are used in coursework, and their graduation designs.

MELBOURNE based Waratah Group is donating $60,000 worth of print and labour to Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) for its fifth running Field of Women event, to take place prior to the Round 21 match between Melbourne and the Sydney Swans. The event which takes place August 12, will see thousands of participants stand in the formation of BCNA’s Pink Lady on the oval of the MCG. Waratah will sponsor BCNA’s promotional print for Field of Women, along with pick packing 15,000 backpacks going to attendees. Ayda Hornak, head of Sales and Marketing at Waratah says, “We will be providing posters, flyers, banners and fulfilment services of the promotional packs for people attending. “We chose this charity because of my personal experience with breast cancer and our COO who lost his mother to breast cancer when he was just 6. “The Field of Women is the focus due to the involvement

Giving print, labour: Waratah Group we have with shareholders and AFL Hall of Famers Stephen Kernahan and Craig Bradley. The management team and some staff are taking part in standing on the field. It is a massive event on the AFL calendar.” Carmen Mullinger, project manager for BCNA says, “In the grand scheme of things, it takes a village to run initiatives and we are having help from Waratah and a number of other

organisations. It helps to have 100 per cent of funds go directly to the cause, when overhead costs are all covered. “Waratah is providing all of the pre promotional material, the event day book and the picking and packing of backpacks. Around 30 of its staff are standing in the Field of Women, and others will be attending the match in corporate and general seats.”

Panther staff find jobs FOUR former staff at Brisbane’s Panther Print, which entered liquidation in late July, will be employed by a new business in the region. Greg Beech, who ran Panther Print prior to its closure says, “It is a guy who has invested a lot of money to have another crack, give it a go, and invest in four people in the process. “The new business has taken one printer, one guillotine operator, one prepress worker, and one other staff member who is a jack of all trades, who worked as a delivery driver for Panther Print.” Beech was offered a job at the new business, but turned it down as he did not want to give 32

the business. All employee entitlements were paid off following the closure of Panther Print, with Beech taking the losses. Beech explains, “I have tried the best I can over the last 30 years. “It has not worked out, I am going to move on with my life, there must be something else I can do. I am not interested in staying in the print industry at this point in time. “If I do not feel I can give 100 per cent for what I am being paid for, I won’t do it. I have had job offers, but I have not got the headspace for that. “I have been getting texts of support from suppliers and

clients that have been real positive, even some just asking if I want to go out for a coffee. “The person who is starting the new business up loves print, and has spent the money and hours to get it all going, and to employ a few ex-staff members.” Beech says he had tried to make changes in the business in the past year and a half, as opposed to staying still, but that they did not pay off. Panther was started by current PIAA president Walter Kuhn in 1989, who sold the business to Les Beech, Greg’s father, in 1992. It was primarily in offset, running Heidelberg presses with in-house finishing. australianprinter.com.au

NEWS: DIGITAL

Alto buys Konica Minolta launches AccurioPress models Ricoh C7100X SYDNEY based Alto Print is expanding into new markets, having purchased a new Ricoh C7100X digital press which can do work it previously had to outsource. Mark Hutchinson, manager of Alto says, “The printer opens up new avenues and do work we could not before. “We had the previous model. Ricoh was helpful and we upgraded to the new machine. “It is fantastic compared to the old model. It can handle all of the different stuff we throw at it. It does enable us to create new products. The old machine could not do envelopes but with this one, envelopes and variable data are no problem. The current job we are doing, it has a thick cover, 400gsm, and the new machine can handle that. It can also process banners, which we no longer have to do on offset. We can now do a broader spectrum of work that we used to have to outsource to other printers. “I prefer the quality of the print that comes out of a Ricoh.”

KONICA Minolta held an event at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney to launch its latest AccurioPress devices, available in both colour and monochrome. Printers descended from around the country to attend, including bigger, established businesses and new, smaller digital players. Sue Threlfo, general manager, Production and Industrial Print, Konica Minolta, says, “Everyone has challenges within the industry and it can certainly be tough at times. But we want to be here with our customers, and help them grow and to achieve new heights that they have not before. I know there are great innovators in this room. I have seen a few people who I know have made technology decisions and business decisions that set them up to have a sustainable business in the future. “I know there are other people I have spoken to who come to events like this because they are looking for new ideas, and they are looking for vendors and people like us to help them think of those ideas.

EFI launches latest Cretaprint EFI has launched its fifth generation Cretaprint ceramic tile printer, featuring Industry 4.0 capabilities and a new EFI e-D5 printhead. José Luis Ramón Moreno, vice president and general manager, EFI Industrial Printing, says, “This new generation is the state-of-art Cretaprint platform towards the future. It is easy to use and promotes high quality manufacturing of digital tiles. “It is a smart printer with multiple connectivity options, including the SCADA application for communication with plant management workflows and the EFI Go mobile app that gives operators the ability to monitor the status of the printer as well as view production statistics in an easy-to-understand dashboard. It is an extension of the unique EFI Ecosystem for ceramic tile printing that ensures a connected, smart and streamlined non-stop manufacturing workflow.” A recent Smithers Pira report points to ceramic printing as driving growth in inkjet, which the research group predicts to become a $100bn market by 2023, currently sitting at $69m. The printer features a maximum print width of 1138 mm and operators can configure it with up to eight print bars, supporting a maximum tile length of 3000 mm. It has a australianprinter.com.au

print speed of up to 70 metres per minute. EFI says the printer’s plug and play printheads shorten installation and assure fine quality adjustment adding that the printheads feature a new nozzle geometry that ensures printing uniformity, with lower ink drop deviation and reduced nozzle clogging. They can work at higher speeds without compromising quality. The new printers include Fiery proServer Colour Management for Ceramics for creating better colour separations and lower ink consumption thanks to a new algorithm specially developed for e-D5 printheads. The fifth generation included an improved printing bar mechanics and alloy plate that reduces the need for adjustments. EFI has added new ink delivery system that includes total ink recirculation, zero deposits and complete temperature control for optimal performance. The redesigned electronics feature continual bi-directional communication with printheads that enables nozzle out compensation, fine tuning for uniform printing and automatic alignment. For ease of use the company has added a brand-new user interface, with a multi-lingual touch screen, providing operators with direct access to key functions.

Attending the launch: Printers from across the nation “It is a community of passionate and entrepreneurial people.” Within the colour range, the AccurioPress C3080 prints at a max speed of 81ppm, with the C3070 peaking at 71 ppm. Both presses have a max resolution of 1200x1200 dpi, and are available with an integrated Konica Minolta controller, or an external/internal EFI Fiery controller. The colour series has a range of finishing options, and is able to produce booklets, including

square fold and full-bleed finishing, envelopes, banner printing, tri-fold, gate fold, stapling, perfect bound, and punching/binding. The monochrome 6126/613P/6120 models match the print resolution of their colour counterparts, 1200dpi. The monochrome presses also handle media weights up to 350gsm. The 6126 and 613P have a max output speed of 136ppm, with the 6120 maxing out at 120ppm.

Epson builds new $310m inkjet factory EPSON has completed construction work at its new $310m factory at Hirooka, which will be used to produce the PrecisionCore chips used in its printheads. The company says the new factory will triple current PrecisionCore print chip production capacity. Epson is also expanding its R&D department, with a planned building at Hirooka that will house a factory for prototyping and volumeproducing large commercial and industrial printing systems and a test laboratory for digital textile printing. Epson is targeting the commercial, industrial printing markets and office markets, with the Precision Core technology at the heart of its print solutions. A spokesperson from the company says, “In the commercial and industrial sectors, an accelerating shift from analogue to digital solutions is expected to generate significant market growth for printers used for printing signage, textiles and product labels. Epson will continue to strengthen its line-up of commercial and industrial largeformat printers, and will boost

both its R&D and manufacturing capability. “The new factory will enable Epson to expand its presence in these markets in addition to bolstering its ability to handle an expected mediumrange increase in demand for printheads. By leveraging its production capacity, Epson also plans to rollout sales of its PrecisionCore printheads for large-format printers worldwide, and work with its partners to accelerate the shift to digital in commercial and industrial printing. “The new factory will be the second production site for PrecisionCore print chips, which are currently manufactured at the Suwa Minami Plant in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The structure, facilities, and equipment of the new factory boast excellent disaster resistance, thus reinforcing Epson’s business continuity capabilities. “The new factory is also designed to achieve 20 per cent higher space productivity than existing factories. It is equipped with a research and development function and will play a key role in improving printhead quality and productivity.”

Active Display CEO departs ACTIVE Display Group CEO Deane Hubball has left the company following the loss of the board’s confidence, while a number of additional staff across sites have been made redundant. Australian Printer has seen an internal staff memo detailing a list of challenges and changes at the business, which lays out plans for decommissioning all of the company’s screenprinting,

screenmaking and screen washing equipment, vacating its Chelsea Heights warehouse, and relocating the entire Boxlink business. The redundancies include four sale staff across Victoria, Queensland, Dandenong South, and within its Assembly business, while another staff member within a probation period will not be kept on by

the company, and departed yesterday. The memo, which is signed by now-acting CEO David Gittus, says the business has not kept pace with the rate of change in the market, and that Active’s profit has fallen significantly. It notes, “We have kept the number of redundancies small by focusing recently on not replacing and restructuring

around employees who have resigned over the past few months. “It has become increasingly clear to our owners WPP AUNZ and to the Active Display Group board of directors that we need to significantly and more quickly transform the Active business into one that can get back to its former levels of profitability in this new environment.”

IVE Group automates with Rima

MELBOURNE-BASED paper distributor Paper Stop has added the Stardream range to its line-up, in a move it says is aimed towards the commercial print market. Steve Miller, owner, Paper Stop, says, “Stardream was discontinued by Ball & Doggett when they merged, as they had other metallics. “We approached the company, it was formalised last week that we are the new distributor. “Stardream has been a popular brand for 15 years, it is well known in print, graphic arts, retail community, and it is something which should continue. “We are going to keep it on the floor in reasonable quantities, there is a four-to-six week timeline to get it into the country. “We will be carrying 19 colours in the range. Stardream is a metallic paper and cover stock which is big in the packaging industry overseas. “It creates a different look for a printer doing finished products.”

BLUE Star and Franklin Web of the IVE Group have installed five Rima RS-610 logstackers, supplied by Graph Pak, to further optimise pressroom and bindery performance. Darryl Meyer, Group general manager, Blue Star Web and Franklin Web says, “We now have Rima stackers across all our web-offset presses in our Blue Star Web Silverwater site, and we have recently commissioned two further logstackers at our Franklin Web facility in Huntingwood.” The equipment is specifically designed for press automation, removal of manual handling and preparation of printed sections for seamless performance in the collation of magazines. Meyer adds, “We wanted to improve press performance by eliminating press stoppages at the delivery and provide a quality product to the bindery, with both outcomes delivering improved speed to market and flexibility for our customers. “We evaluated a number of suppliers and found that Rima equipment had the capability to handle a wide variety of different products, and along

Installing the logstackers: Graph Pak, Rima workers with local and regional support from Graph Pak it was ideally suited to our business needs. “We are getting distinct advantages from the common platform of equipment, in that an operator can move from press to press and be dealing with the exact same workflow and setup.” The Rima equipment has met all the performance criteria that Blue Star set out to achieve. Both Rima and Graph Pak have been trusted partners with IVE for many years. Tom Ralph, owner, Graph Pak, says, “On the back of Blue

Star installing their new web press in Silverwater, they also installed a full Rima postpress line and took the opportunity to update their other presses all to provide a uniform press room. “We started this journey a year ago, installing on a number presses one after the other. It was exciting to see the last one finally commissioned, including the RS-610 logstacking equipment, and to know our equipment was making a difference. “We have created a turnkey solution throughout the factory.”

APP signs on to environmental agreement PAPER giant Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), is joining the Mangrove Ecosystem Restorement Alliance (Mera), an Indonesian sustainability platform aiming to protect and restore mangrove ecosystems across the country. is closely aligned with our sustainability vision.” In its Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2020 plan, APP Sinar Mas is laying out specific commitments to support reforestation, conservation and biodiversity as well as climate change. The company says it has been investing in these areas for the last five years, working to identify and protect more than 600,000ha of natural forest across its supplier concessions. By supporting projects like MERA, APP says it is able to extend its sustainability efforts beyond its concession borders. In its first phase, Mera plans to reduce the vulnerability of

coastal communities, natural resources and vital assets by 2022, by promoting effective management and implementing strategies to conserve and restore mangrove landscapes. Rizal Algamar, chairman of the board of management at environmental group YKAN says, “Indonesia has almost a quarter of the world’s mangrove forests. “These mangrove forests are especially important to protect because they provide services for coastal protection, nursery and spawning ground for marine biota, migratory bird sanctuary, carbon sequestration and community livelihood.” australianprinter.com.au

KOENIG & Bauer AG (Koenig & Bauer) has seen its net profit half from the previous 1HY, while the Asia Pacific region grew its share of group revenue. Also falling were its sales, generating €514.4m, dropping five per cent from €538.9m for the prior corresponding period (pcp). Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) came in at €10.6m, falling 35 per cent from €16.3m in the first half of 2017. Net profit was booked at €6.7m, decreasing 56 per cent from €15.2 in the pcp. Order intake reached €705.3m, increasing by 17.2 per cent from €601.9m in the pcp. All regions saw falls in revenue, with the exception of Germany, which the company classifies independently from Europe, and the Asia/Pacific area, which grew its proportion of group revenue, increasing to 27.1 per cent, from 24.6 per cent in the pcp. The rest of Europe excluding Germany remained the highest source of income, although it dropped, making 33.8 per cent of the company’s total revenue in the half from 35.7 per cent the year before. The Australian division is also changing its name, going from KBA Australasia to Koenig & Bauer (AU). Dave Lewis, managing director, Koenig & Bauer AU says, “It is a tough industry,

but we have a good project and are moving forward. We have bought Flexotecnica, along with Iberica die cutters, and are trying to spread out, mainly in packaging, but in other products as well.” This is reflected in its revenue results, as its Special segment saw its revenue rise to €195m, up 3 per cent from €189.2m in the pcp, while EBIT came to €14.4m, down 2 per cent from €14.6m. Earnings per share dropped 41 per cent, clocking in at €0.39 for the half from €0.93 the year before. Claus Bolza-Schünemann, CEO of KBA, says, “With order intake reaching a particularly high €454.4m in the second quarter and the order backlog rising to €805.8m at the end of the first half, the Koenig & Bauer Group is on track to meet its targets for 2018. This year, we expect to achieve organic growth of around 4 per cent in Group revenue and an EBIT margin of around 7 per cent. “Strong security business and more orders in packaging printing caused order intake to rise by 17.2 per cent to €705.3m in the first half of 2018. Driven by the good Q2 figure of €297.1m, Group revenue came to €514.4m, but fell short of the previous year’s figure of €538.9m due to the even greater accumulation of delivery dates in the second half of the year.”

WIDE FORMAT

Centrum: beyond commercial print

W

Leveraging both presses: Sandra Mascaro, general manager, Centrum, with the KBA Rapida 145 and 162A

ITH an industrywide decline in commercial print volumes, the companies which have been smart enough to adapt and look to new markets have thrived, taking a larger slice of the pie which is now shared between the fewer companies remaining. Centrum Printing invested in its large format KBA Rapida 145 in 2016, its second huge buy in less than three years following its purchase of a Rapida 162A. At a time where most commercial printers were moving away from large offset press investments, and towards digital supplementary or complementary presses, Centrum upgraded. Its Rapida 145 offers six-colour, conventional and UV printing with coating, and can run at 15,000sph. Both presses have been ISO certified in colour management. Now 70 per cent of its business comes from the packaging, and point of sale segments of print, both of which are set to grow. Looking back Sandra Mascaro, general manager, Centrum, explains, “Most of the industry might have thought we were crazy, however we needed to create a point of difference to remain viable in a competitive market. The investment has definitely paid off for the company, which now works with trade clients, resellers, international print management companies, due to its ability to offer both the large format sheet sizes, or as low as 500mm x 600mm, allowing them to compete with commercial printers. Now the company is looking beyond its presses- to robotic 38

automation, tying it in with its large inhouse finishing capabilities; laminating, die cutting, mounting and glueing. Mascaro says, “There are companies we do only printed sheets for, others where we do industrial design, prototypes, finishing, die cutting, mounting and glueing, then we pack and deliver. We also have inhouse folding and stitching facilities to accommodate our commercial clients for all magazine and brochure requirements as well. We really do offer a total solution “A customer will give us a brief of their campaign requirements and then we will prototype that with our in-house industrial design team, which we introduced in January this year, as a need to complement our packaging and point of sale print. “We also have the largest laminator in the country, which allows us to provide a range of unique and innovative finishes to client campaigns The company’s robotic arm, set to arrive in September, will be used for gluing. Mascaro explains, “That will be able to apply pattern gluing and double sided tape. For all the big displays that we do instead of our staff hand gluing everything, the robotic arm can be programmed to carry out the repetitive tasks speeding up production times. Completing large format point of sale print jobs means that Centrum now offers kitting and packing for clients. Moving beyond printing on substrates, the company produces a full kit of retail campaigns which is ready to be delivered into stores with assembly instructions. Centrum is by no means standing still, or resting on its recent successes and expansions, Mascaro explains, “We are always looking at

what we can do next to offer value and provide innovative solutions to our clients” “Our presses are built for different work, sometimes up to 15 different jobs in a day, as opposed to a week-long print run. “We will print from 70gsm right up to 450gsm, print on plastic, polyprop. So if clients want something different, we can offer that. We can print up to 1.2mm, which is fairly thick, and then do all the basic commercial work as well.” Despite being based in Sydney, the company does a lot of work nationally, particularly in Melbourne. Mascaro explains, “We have proved that we turnaround work fairly quickly. We can print something in the morning, get it wrapped strapped and out the door, and it is dispatched overnight, getting to Melbourne the next day. “Our press quality means we are second to none in the industry. We have a great team of passionate people who are driven and committed to Centrum’s growth and success. For Centrum, innovation is a mindset, and one which has seen it successfully transition to a postcommercial print world. In Mascaro’s words, “It is about evolving. In this industry you have to, you cannot sit still or be complacent. We are always looking at how we can keep progressing, keep moving forward, and what more can we give our clients. As an industry, we need to work together and utilise the capacity and technology available to help grow our businesses. As the saying goes by Ryunosuke Satoro: Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.” australianprinter.com.au

Digital divide widens: oOh! now 64% digital OUTDOOR giant oOh!media has grown its revenue by 11 per cent in the HY ending June 30, also growing its EBITDA by the same amount. Revenue for the 1HY18 came to $192m, with gross profit up 16 per cent to $87.6m. The margin of gross profit also increased, from 44 per cent in the prior corresponding period (pcp) to 46 per cent. EBITDA came to $36.3m,

from $31.9m in the pcp. Digital now accounts for 64 per cent of oOh! Revenue, up from 52 per cent in the previous HY, the first reporting period in which it overtook classic revenues. In the company’s last FY results, that figure climbed to 60 per cent, showing consistent growth in digital from 35 per cent digital in 2015 and 45 per cent in 2016.

Ball & Doggett launches website, direct line

APN building print superstructures

BALL & Doggett has launched a direct line and email address to support its Display & Visual team around Australia, following on from the debut of its new website as a combined company. Leigh Hooper, national manager, Display and Visual, Ball & Doggett says, “It is important for us to provide our Display & Visual customers first class service and support. This service will allow us to provide our customers with experienced product knowledge and technical support, live stock checks, the ability to place and track orders, facilitate converting orders and manage general enquiries. “We understand the demands and pressures our customers face day-to-day, so we intend on providing them prompt, reliable support and peace of mind.” Recently, the company launched their website www. ballanddoggett.com.au, which includes all of its newer wideformat additions.

APN Outdoor (APN) has won a tender to build the superstructures for ten new signs on both the Princes and Western Freeways in Melbourne. As part of the new contract with VicRoads, APN Outdoor will construct freestanding and bridge-mounted superstructure for both print (classic) and digital signage, with the first of the new sites expected to be developed by mid-2019. Print signage is still the dominant mode for APN, representing 62 per cent of revenue in its last annual figures. The new agreement between APN Outdoor, which also holds advertising contracts for the Tullamarine Freeway and CityLink in Melbourne, and VicRoads, is effective now. James Warburton, managing director, APN, says, “We are delighted to extend our relationship with VicRoads and add to our already strong portfolio of consumer connection points on Melbourne’s key freeways. “APN Outdoor offers

The company splits its results into six segments, Road, Retail, Fly, Locate, New Zealand, and Other. Within Other sits both Junkee Media and Cactus Imaging, the printing arm of the company purchased in 2016. The Other segment grew its revenue by 16 per cent, from $7.9m from $9.2m. In the Road segment of the business sales were up 16

per cent, which the company attributes to growth in both its digital and classic sites, which it says delivered a strong increase in revenue for the period. Retail revenue is down by five per cent, which the company says is a result of reduced spend from major advertisers. The Fly segment saw an 18 per cent increase in revenue from the last quarter of FY17, coming to $29.3m from $24.7m.

Expanding assets, building print: APN CEO James Warburton advertisers the most comprehensive outdoor network nationally and the addition of the new signage on the Princes and Western Freeways will make that network even stronger.” The company highlights that Princes Freeway is the only direct link between Geelong, which is Victoria’s second largest city, and Melbourne, while the Western Freeway is the gateway to Melbourne’s growing western suburbs and beyond to Victoria’s spa and wine country, including

the popular Ballarat and Daylesford regions. The company has also scored contract wins over the Tasman, adding Queenstown Airport to its existing portfolio of Auckland and Christchurch Airports. Warburton, says, “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Queenstown Airport Corporation. As the gateway to the lower South Island, Queenstown Airport is recording strong growth.”

than by using print in a creative way. “We hope the original approach will create a bit of a buzz, maybe inspire a few

people to think outside the box for their next print campaign and, of course, get the message across about the breakthrough productivity, automation, economy and versatility of the new Océ Colorado printers.” Should a wallet turn up at your place of business, Hawkins says, all the details of how to claim your rewards will be inside, and you can keep the wallet. For those who do not have a wallet, Hawkins says, “If it sounds interesting to you, visit the website at oce.com.au/wallet or give your Océ Australia rep a call and we will tell you how you can claim your reward anyway.”

Océ drops wallets PRINTERS around the country have found wallets left behind in their businesses, as Océ promotes its Colorado UVgel wide format presses. As well as outlining the ways a Colorado printer could help ‘put more money in hip pockets’, the wallets contain complimentary vouchers worth $2000, to be used on ink or media when purchasing their new Colorado 1640, and free movie tickets which are redeemable by returning the wallet to an Océ business development manager and attending a machine demo. Dale Hawkins, who came up with the campaign, says, 40

OMA members donate $1.6m in signs THE Outdoor Media Association (OMA) and its members have partnered with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for National Missing Persons Week (NMPW), donating 5,000 signs, worth some $1.6m. It represents the largest donation in the history of the partnership, with members including Adshel, APN Outdoor, Bishopp Outdoor Advertising, JCDecaux, oOh!media, QMS Media, Tonic Health Media, and TorchMedia.

Entries open for global wrap comp SUBMISSIONS are open for Avery Dennison’s global Wrap Like a King challenge, with the competition being held across 53 countries for users of the company’s car wrap films. More than 150 installers entered the challenge in 2017. Melbourne wrap business Exotic Graphix took out the grand title for its Lei’d Low entry last year. The contest will run from July 9 through to September, including titles for Regional Wrap Kings, Continental Wrap Kings and the crowning of King of the Wrap World. The prize packages for 2018 are worth a combined total of over US$30,000, which will be spread out among the various winners. The grand prize package is worth almost US$5,000, with additional gift vouchers and exposure via the Avery Dennison website and web advertisements. Avery Dennison says the 12 Regional Wrap Kings win almost US$2,000 worth of personalized marketing materials, Avery Dennison products, SEMA passes and more.

Man found: David O’Reilly, featured in 2016 campaign

Originally developed following the disappearance of Queensland (QLD) resident, Tony Jones, in 1988, the 2018 campaign marks the 30th anniversary of the NMPW initiative, the 10th year of the OOH industry’s support in New South Wales (NSW), and the 4th year in partnership with the AFP. Missing person David O’Reilly was found during NMPW in 2016, after being featured in the campaign.

ACCC approves outdoor mega-mergers THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has given its approval for both the oOh!media (oOh!) acquisition of Adshel, and JCDecaux purchase of APN Outdoor (APN). Following the completion of the mergers, the four largest players in outdoor advertising will become two. Unlike the proposed oOh! APN merger last year, which the ACCC rejected, the new mergers are between companies who are not in direct competition, according to Rod Sims, chairman, ACCC. Sims says, “These transactions are between businesses that operate for the most part in complementary segments of out-of-home advertising. “This is different to the proposed tie-up between oOh! and APN. The respective merger companies rarely compete headto-head.” As both JCDecaux and Adshel conduct most of their business in street furniture, with oOh!, APN primarily in billboards, airports, and retail, the ACCC is satisfied the mergers will not lessen competition.

Mergers approved: Rod Sims, chairman, ACCC Sims notes, “Some market participants expressed some concerns, in particular about the possible anticompetitive bundling of different out-ofhome categories. “However the major media agencies and large advertisers did not generally express strong concerns, and the ACCC considers that bundling is unlikely to have a significant impact on competition. “The merged companies will continue to compete with each other and with other out-ofhome advertising providers. “We consider that the options

for advertisers and site owners will not change significantly and so neither of the proposed deals is likely to substantially lessen competition.” APN also released its HY financial results, in which revenue grew by four per cent from the previous corresponding period (pcp), from $162.3m to $168.4m, and the split between digital and print narrowed. Digital revenue now sits at 42 per cent of the total, from 37 per cent in the pcp. APN is the only major player of the four that still generates most of its revenue from print.

Aeronaut introducing updated cutters MACHINE manufacturer Aeronaut Automation will be displaying its latest cutters at Visual Impact, including the Mikron 2, and newly designed Proton. The company, based in Terry Hills, Sydney, has been manufacturing wide format flatbed automated cutters for over 20 years. The output includes laser and ultrasonic cutters, rotary, tangential and oscillating blade cutters, specialising in bespoke orders, 42

some as large as 10m x 50m. John Clark, owner, Aeronaut, explains, “We actually make the biggest plotters in the world, 10m x 50m is not out of the question. Our major market is about three and a half metres wide machines and up to 30m long. “We offer laser and ultrasonic as well as blade cutters and are the only people that offer the full range of cutting technologies, something which is often needed in the Australian market.

August 2018 - Australian Printer

“For banners, trade shows, woven fabric, we are right up there with anyone else in the world for cutting and machine vision technology, but in Australia, lower in price because we’re selling direct. “The biggest industry segment we work with is window furnishing, industrial and technical textiles. “We sell a lot of ultrasonic and blade cutters locally where edge sealing and off-contact cutting is required, but the

lasers are almost all sold overseas. In fact, 70 per cent of our cutters are exported, mainly to Europe and the USA. “A great cutter we are offering for the print and sign market is the Mikron 2, a two steered quick-change tool cutter with a pen and gantry mounted camera. Normally it would cut and crease, but can do a lot of other jobs. “The Mikron 2 is reasonably priced, accurate and fast, ideal for print to cut.” australianprinter.com.au

The company says that HP Indigo supports the industry with a leading product portfolio and the HP Indigo 7900 has a wide range of innovations that raise standards of print quality. It adds that sharp lines and ultrasmooth vignettes separate HP Indigo from the competition; its impressive colour output comes from the ongoing innovations that HP Indigo puts into these presses. The HP Indigo 7900 digital press runs at 3600 sheets per hour and supports a range of media from 60 to 350gsm. It comes with capacity of up to seven colours (five colour as standard), basic CMYK plus additional colours such as fluorescent pink, white, violet, orange, green, and even raised effects to add individual added value. The colours form part of the HP Indigos digital offset colour technology, known as liquid electrophotography (LEP). Using HP Indigo ElectroInk, these presses can reproduce up to 97 percent of the Pantone colour range. The company adds that the HP Indigo 7900 will produce virtually all the colours that your graphic designers could wish for. This process also helps designers to expand their knowledge so they can place these colours into their designs, which are originated from the HP SmartStream Mosaic software. On top of producing

vibrant colours, the Indigo 7900 has the capability for speciality media printing. One Shot technology can produce the image on special substrates such as canvas, synthetic, lenticular, and metallised materials. Also, using HP Indigo ElectroInk primer, the machine can produce a high impact eye-catching image on virtually any substrate.

Automation advantages THE Indigo 7900 offers colour automation with inline spectrophotometry linking back into colour management software to make sure that printed products match future and past runs as well as work from both digital and offset presses. The HP Indigo Automatic Alert Agent performs a real-time error detection scan to reduce inconsistency and waste. The company says the HP SmartStream Production Pro Print Server platform is a powerful print server that can handle even the most demanding of clients and their database. The HP Vision System links this data to the press. The HP operating system, PrintOS, makes it easy to manage any number of jobs from submission to shipment, collaborate with

partners and colleagues, and discover new opportunities for growth. The press operator can access the open, secure cloud-based platform anytime, anywhere. This operating system and associated parts works tirelessly behind the scenes to collate the print activities stacked up in a queue into the most cost-effective and efficient way to be produced. This reduces waste and optimises colour, substrate, and machine time. Using the PrintOS App, production can be viewed and managed from a phone or tablet. HP revealed a number of enhancements for HP Indigo presses at this year’s IGAS exhibition in Japan The company introduced Silver ElectroInk, at the show, for commercial print applications on the Indigo 7900. It is designed for single-pass applications of silver and a wide gamut of metallic colours on standard papers, saving the need to use metallic substrates. Other additions revealed at the expo include new applications for the cloud-based PrintOS programme including OEE for press productivity, Site Flow for end-to-end production management of high-volume orders and Color Beat for automated colour verification and monitoring.

Currie Group takes solutions to Visual Impact CURRIE GROUP has announced it will bring its mobile showroom to Visual Impact in Sydney as it did for the Brisbane show. Wide Format

Widening revenue Print and cut gets upgraded: Mimaki UCJV Series

W

ITH Visual Impact Sydney just around the corner, now is a good time for printers to consider what options are available on the market to sell more products to existing customers, and potentially grab new business. This is especially true in the wide format sector of print, which, unlike commercial print, has been steadily growing in recent years. Digital printing for signage, poster printing, direct to garment printing, and point of sale print is now within the reach of most print shops, with the latest devices offering small footprints, and accessible entry points. Take Epson’s latest T-Series for example - the T3160 and the T5160 are 24”, and 36” machines respectively, which can be configured as either desktop or on a stand. They will do an A1 print in as little as 31 seconds, while the 3160 takes a little longer, at 34 seconds. The RRP starts at $1,695 for those presses, which is a low price point in terms of large format. Then of course there is the other end of the market for printers looking to sell the high-end digital colour work with more accuracy in reproducing graphics. In the case of Epson, the SureColor S80600 is its 10-colour machine which can be configured with metallic or white ink, and offer Pantone coverage up to 98 per cent. What about if you are looking to make a high-quality investment but do not have the funds currently in your business to make a purchase? While Heidelberg has been making a big splash with its subscription model for large offset presses, Roland DG Australia is now celebrating 11 years of its Roland Rental service, which is managed through the team at Ecolease. Rental payments are fully tax-deductible, while approval can be given for sums up to $50,000

without financial statements, giving time-poor business owners more hours to put into their print shops. Ecolease director Marian Taggartholland notes many customers are now up to their third or fourth contract, demonstrating how they have been able to increase capacity and update to the latest technology. What about direct-to-garment printing? Most printers would have multiple local sports teams within reach, and investing in the latest entry-level presses can pay itself back relatively quickly. Ricoh’s Ri 100 is one such example, with the company currently locking down reseller agreements. Kayell Australia is now set to sell DTG printers, adding another string in its bow. Andreas Johansson, sales director - Graphic Arts and Print Markets, Kayell, explains, “The unit is capable of printing up to A4 in size and has an integrated heat press. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced print service provider. It has never been easier to print a one-of-a-kind T-shirt or bag for your customers to take away immediately. With the Ri 100 you can easily boost your customer numbers by expanding the scope of your printing business.” For people already in the wide format space, looking to upgrade what their machines can do, Mimaki’s latest print and cut

solutions offer simultaneous layer printing, allowing print shops to sell transformative graphics which give a different image when backlit, or in daylight. In such a tightly competitive market, the companies that push the envelope of what print can do stand a better chance of winning and keeping customers. Brad Creighton, national marketing manager, Mimaki, notes that 100 units in the company’s UCJV series have already been sold in Australia. Creighton says, “There is also media versatility, a wide variety of print and cut applications offered by many signage, commercial and packaging print service providers. LED UV curing technology enables PSPs to use an expanded range of materials including uncoated print media and many thin film substrates that may be too heat sensitive for latex or solvent high heat fixation systems. “The systems have unrivalled features, including an ID Cut function to make printing and cutting easier and faster.” For any print shop looking to find the latest point of difference, Visual Impact seems to be the number one destination for the coming month. With major suppliers attending, new equipment being launched, you can take a look in, and decide whether now is the time for a major or minor investment, and maybe learn how to get more from the machines you already have. australianprinter.com.au

Kayell brings high-end imaging skill to VI

K

AYELL Australia is bringing its high end imaging skill to Visual Impact with three product introductions, across paper, colour management, and software. Andreas Johansson, sales director - Graphic Arts and Print Markets, explains, “We set ourselves apart with our orientation around colour. Once you start spending big dollars on equipment, you need a good colour workflow to ensure that you are not wasting customer opportunities. “Colour is a very important part of it, especially working across multiple devices, which is something we help our customers with.” Among the latest additions is the new range of Gamut S-Race dye sublimation papers from Felix Schoeller, which it says will cut a third off production times. Johansson explains, “S-Race papers feature microporous technology that produce sharper results, fast drying, outstanding layflat performance, and fast transfer properties. The benefits can increase print production speeds and save up to 35 per cent in calendaring times.” Kayell will also introduce the Barbieri LFP qb spectrophotometer to its product line up, noting that it adds support for most rip software. Johansson says, “The new device retains the switchable aperture, transmissive and reflection reading, and measurement of any kind of flat substrate capabilities of its predecessor. To these are added a removable measuring head (spectral unit) for measuring spot colours in addition to automated scans, a camera supported positioning system, Real D50 illumination to guarantee conformance to M0, M2, M3 measurement conditions for reflection and transmission. Support for most rip software that results in correct handling of fluorescent inks and media. “Of course excellent colour management is meaningless without seeing it right. The team will be showing off one of its GTI Graphic Technologies viewing systems. The VPI (Vertical Print Inspector) that is a D50 viewing station designed for the visual inspection of large format prints in a convenient vertical format. Not at the show, but offered by Kayell is GTI’s EVS viewing

station that includes a built in print bar, horizontal and vertical viewing positions, and LiteGuard II, which displays lamp warm up, lamp hours, and remaining lamp life.” Across software, Kayell will be giving demonstrations of the latest version of PrintFactory, with personnel from the company on hand to provide insights on the updates. Johansson says, “The new Version 6 of PrintFactory will also be demonstrated with the help of personnel from PrintFactory. The software suite is ideal for production as one rip speaking to multiple devices, facilitating a common colour managed platform and speedy workflow efficiency. The PrintFactory tools kit includes as many rips as you need, layout apps, PDF editor for tiling and finishing preparations, Industrial cutter along with integrated Print & Cut support, Media management and colour calibration. “And there are savings to be had with automatic ink optimisation that

can reduce ink usage by up to 20 per cent.” Kayell has also been recently appointed as an official reseller of Ricoh’s latest DTG printer, the Ri 100, which has had early success in the Australian market, having been installed at multiple print sites across the country, including Worldwide in South Brisbane. Johansson says, “We will also be demonstrating the Ricoh Ri 100, a direct to garment printer (DTG). This is a an entry model for garment printing. With a low price and an easy-to-use design, the Ricoh Ri 100 makes it easy to begin DTG printing. “The unit is capable of printing up to A4 in size and has an integrated heat press. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced print service provider. "It has never been easier to print a one-of-a-kind T-shirt or bag for your customers to take away immediately. With the Ri 100 you can easily boost your customer numbers by expanding the scope of your printing business.” Australian Printer - August 2018

Four sides of Epson

E

PSON will be showcasing its newest hardware at Visual Impact, including new pigment ink additions to its T series range, which it says beat the competition in terms of print quality at the mid-tolower end of the market. With its stand being modelled on a classic print copyshop, and split into four sections, the company says it is focusing on real-world, saleable output. Nathan Fulcher, marketing communications manager, Epson, explains, “The first section of the stand is themed around fabric. We have two dye sub machines, the F6200, and F9360, launched this year, along with our new DTG machine, the F2160, which we have boosted the print quality and speed on. “The F2160 has been proving quite popular, as it is a significant step up. It will complete a colour t-shirt, high speed in 15 seconds. That is a white t-shirt, without white ink. “On a dark colour garment, you will need to put down a layer of white ink first to get that same image quality, but that can be completed in 52 seconds. “It also has a small footprint, upgraded head design, and automated ink management system, in particular with the white ink. “Then we have signage, our two Eco-Solvent S series printers, the S80600, and S60600, which are both 64”. The S80600 is our high-colour machine and can be configured with metallic or white ink for a maximum of 10 different colours. “It offers Pantone coverage up to 98 per cent. That is the highest possible quality colour output for signage, and ideal for replicating corporate colours, and skin tones in people and graphics. “Complementing that, the S60600 is Epson’s high speed machine. It is a dual-head CMYK machine, which will do a quality billboard print at just over 52sqm/ hr. “Then we have our poster, graphics and point-of-sale (POS) segment of the stand, where we are featuring two ranges, our P-Series, and our T-Series. “The P20070 is a 64” 10-colour high speed machine, which uses aqueous inks, as opposed to eco-solvent. The focus is on highquality, saleable poster, artwork or promotional print. They are ideal for indoor posters, and anything

50

Higher speeds, richer colours: Epson upgrades DTG

POS, around the counter or for promotions, that kind of thing. “Then we are displaying our T-Series, which is our affordable range. The T stands for technical, and they are built for Cad printing, technical drawings, maps, but with the quality of colour the printers offer, they are also cost effective solutions for posters, display and point of sale. “There will be three printers on the stand, two of which are new. “The already-released model is the T7200D, a 44” machine configurable with an optional scanner, which allows high resolution colour scan, copy and document sharing functionality. "It is rare to get a standalone scanner of that size, making it useful in a print room. “We are also excited to be announcing four new T-Series models that are ideal for the mid-tolower end of the market. Starting at just over $1600, they are low-barrier to entry machines for anyone looking to produce saleable commercial POS output at an economical price point. “The T3160 and the T5160 are 24” and 36" machines respectively. They can be configured as either desktop or on a stand. They will do an A1 print in as little as 31 seconds; the 3160 takes a little longer, at 34

seconds. The RRP will start at $1,695 including GST for those presses, which is a low price point in terms of large format. “They use pigment inks, whereas competitor products are usually a mix of dye and pigment, meaning ours have higher image quality. “The two others are the T3460 and the T5460. We expanded that range to cater for all sections of the market. “The T3460 is a 24” and the T5460 is a 36” machine. Offering speeds of 24 seconds and 21 seconds respectively for an A1 print, and with pigment inks, they provide the image quality people expect from Epson. They will start at RRP $3095 including GST. “We will also have on display a digital signage solution, that is our LightScene EV-100, which is a new type of accent lighting projector, or a light which can project images. “We have put a laser projector inside a traditional spotlight form factor, which can be used as a regular light, or can be used for projection mapping to display any content you want. “So our stand is about real-world, saleable applications. "We are showcasing ways that businesses can either add to existing revenue streams, or develop entirely new ones.” australianprinter.com.au

Mimaki showcasing print and cut at VI

M

IMAKI Australia will be demonstrating the latest in its wide format technology and equipment at the Visual Impact trade show in Sydney. In one of its two stands, the company will exhibit a mix of sign and display and industrial products highlighting Mimaki’s new ID Cut features. On show will be the new UCJV LED Print & Cut series, now available in four sizes: UCJV300-75 printing 800mm width, UCJV300107 at 1090mm width, UCJV300130 - 1361mm and UCJV300-160 with 1610mm. Brad Creighton, national marketing manager, Mimaki Australia says, “Mimaki Australia is on target to sell 100 units of the UCJV 1.6m wide models within a 12 month period. Why are we so successful with this platform? Feedback from our customers are highlighting three main reasons. “There are immediate post productions benefits, once printed you can immediately laminate or immediately cut even into the ink without the normal drying or outgassing concerns. Our LED UV curable inks are Greenguard certified.” Mimaki also has Greengard and Greenguard Gold certifications for the UV-curable inks used in its UJF3042MkII, UJF-6042MkII and UJF3042MkII EX printers, including LH-100, LUS-120, LUS-150 UV curable inks. The certification also applies to Mimaki’s the UCJV series LUS-170, LUS-200 UV-curable ink; LX-101 Latex ink; and SS21, the company’s most popular solvent ink. “The systems have unrivalled features, including an ID Cut function to make printing and cutting easier and faster. Along with registration marks, RasterLink6 plus software will include a barcode on the print. The barcode, read by the crop mark sensor on the UCJV printer/cutter, contains cutting and rotation information allowing the UCJV printer/cutter to automate the cutting process. 52

High-quality, multi-layer print: UCJV Print & Cut series

Mimaki is set to display its new UCJV LED Print & Cut Series and other new equipment at the upcoming trade show

August 2018 - Australian Printer

"This function is particularly useful when running nested printcut jobs, as the printer continuously reads the data for both single and ganged jobs. “It also offers simultaneous layer printing, all the way up to five layers. Four-layer printing, One Graphic, Two Views – colour, black, white, and colour – offers an enhanced print capability that allows designers to build layered transformative graphics for backlit applications. Five layer printing enables printing onto clear film with two viewing points for window signage. You can have a different graphic from outside a store compared to inside it – with layers of colour, white, black, white, colour.” Also on display will be the new CF22-1225 flatbed cutting plotter, with the ability to handle materials as large as 1,220 x 2,440mm. This device is designed as the ideal complement to the Mimaki JFX2002513 UV LED flatbed printer for users to produce seasonal pointof-purchase displays of exhibition components. Like the UCJV, it features RasterLink6 plus software, which has an ID Cut function to help speed up printing and cutting, with the additional ability to include an ID reference in the form of a barcode on the print. A crop mark sensor on the CF221225 can read this identification code, enabling the device to identify cutting and rotation information, which in turn allows for automation of the cutting process.

The new CF22-1225 flatbed cutting plotter from Mimaki is intended to complement the company's JFX200-2513 flatbed printer and, together with ArtiosCAD Designer Solution software, offer a complete print-andcut workflow. Operated in combination, the three components are designed to deliver more profitable short-run, print-and-cut jobs. Creighton adds, “Whether organisations are developing sophisticated short-run signs and display graphics, creating packaging mock-ups or samples, handling special requests for small lot furniture, or simply creating and producing designs on demand, this solution will not disappoint. “We have had great reception to our UJF-MkII UV-curable flatbed printing systems since we launched. The relatively new addition to this outstanding family of printers raises the bar even more, making it extremely easy to produce high-value-add print. In a single operation, the UJF-3042MkII EX can lay down a base coat of inkjet primer, a base print of white ink, full colour print and a surface coating of clear ink. This is a highly efficient way to produce the value-added printing applications growing in popularity among marketers." Durst makes print wider

C

HALLENGES bring the best out of innovators and the technical experts at Durst have responded strongly to the challenge of producing better quality wide format printers. The P5 printing platform shows the company’s intent to fully explore the wide format market. The first member of the family, the large format printing flagship P5 250, targets high volume industrial production and aims for one-offs in offset quality. The term P5 relates to the five core features at the heart of this technology: productivity, reliability, workflow, versatility and print quality. Christoph Gamper, chief executive of Durst Group who recently visited Australia, says “The P5 platform, including workflow software and advanced service tools, represents our key strategy to further invest into large format printing technology and further afield. “We believe that there is a lot to explore in this market space and the P5 250 HS is our first statement. In an integrated world, printers need to change as well. With the P5 family we provide tools for change and profit – and our firm commitment to continue to lead the innovation in the large format market.” The P5 technology comprises a series of new generation printers along with new in-house developed software and workflow solutions. It also offers touch operation based user-interfaces and remote service capabilities. The company claims a 70 per cent increase in productivity

Wide format printing has never been easier with Durst technology

for the P5 over its predecessor, the Durst P10 250 HS. The P5 features the latest MEMS nozzle plates powered by Durst proprietary data-path and electronics. Durst says this results in a high-speed printing system with ultra-precise drop placement and industrial level reliability. Durst lists the P5 technology features:  Print volume capability in twopass mode up to 240 sqm/hr and high resolution modes of 1200 dpi  Offset printing quality with a drop-size of five pcl  Durst Analytics information platform for pre-emptive maintenance and detailed machine and consumption data to guarantee maximum uptime  Durst Workflow, which provides an in-house developed suite of applications custom tailored for Durst printers and with unique features - beyond ripping

Durst Plus adds power DURST has a reputation for innovation. The company proved this last year when it added a Plus to three of its top performing machines. Since its introduction, the Rho 1312 hybrid UV printer has proven its profitability with many users investing in multiple units. With its Plus initiative, the team at Durst has boosted the Rho 1312 (to Rho 1312 Plus) productivity giving it an output exceeding 1,000 sqm per hour (330 boards an hour) in two pass production mode). It also offers 1,000dpi across a 2.5 m width, with both roll to roll and flat

sheet hybrid configuration. Options include having double sided on both sheet and roll, as well as white ink. With any business, consumable costs and cost of production form a key part of the day to day running, so Durst has developed algorithms to enable users use less ink with an ink saver function. It enables ink savings from five per cent to as much as 35 five per cent depending on the job. One operator can run this machine can be run by one operator, utilising three quarters automation of feed and stack. Durst has also added Plus to the Rho 512R (5m roll to roll UV printer). It has received a speed boost to nearly 400sqm per hour and resolution to a Fine Art mode of 1,200dpi, pin sharp across a 5m print. To ease any production bottlenecks, Durst has augmented the in-line cutting to ensure the ballads stay sharp for many hours during multiple shifts. The blades automatically move down 1mm an hour to ensure a sharp cut is always delivered. The 512R Plus also benefits from the ink saving introduced on the Rho 1312, aiding the bottom line, with average 15 per cent ink saving. Durst also added an inspection Lightbox to the out-feed, assisting the operator better monitor quality and consistency. The Rho P10 200 and 250 HS also received the Plus treatment, adding 40 per cent more speed, as well as double sided roll to roll printing, Haptic Print mode and the Durst Ink Saver module. Durst says Haptic Print mode is something totally new. This print mode will give a 3D effect to prints, raising the print surface up and adding a touch element to a print, suitable for braille printing.

Thriving through Roland Rental

W

ORLDWIDE, hardly anyone in business looks back fondly on 2007. The Global Financial Crisis saw a number of print and signage companies disappear, while an even larger number suffered serious losses. Challenged with a harsher business environment, businesses in our industry received little comfort from lenders who tightened their criteria for accessing finance. A tougher regulatory regime meant that many businesses delayed installing new solutions that could have helped them climb out of the trough. Roland DG assessed the situation and created Roland Rental to assist its customers through that tough time. The company says that, since that initial period of helping so many of its customers navigate such a challenging and constantly changing finance landscape, Roland Rental, managed by the team at Ecolease, has thrived. Since 2007, Roland Rental has helped more than 1100 businesses acquire over $26m of Roland DG equipment. Greg Stone, product and marketing manager at Roland DG Australia, says the company revels in the success of its customers. He says, “I guess nearly everyone in business will tell you they understand they derive their success from the success of their customers and we agree on that. But, at Roland DG, we actually do something concrete to help in the form of Roland Rental, which essentially exists to help our customers succeed.” Marian Taggart-Holland, director of Ecolease, explains, “To begin with, our approval system is hasslefree, and the Roland DG focus on customer service remains at the forefront of our approach. This is evident in how many customers are up to their third or fourth Roland Rental contracts, which has helped them increase their production capacity and enabled them to upgrade to the latest technology.”

Roland Rental Team at the Mobile Imagination Centre, from left:Marian Taggart-Holland, director Ecolease; Con Chronopoulos, account manager at Roland DG; Brett Mendes, product specialist, Roland DG; and Steven Howland business development manager at Graphic Art Mart

Roland DG uses out of the box thinking to help its customers navigate through tricky financial waters

Roland Rental has also been able to assist customers with vehicle finance due to their initial Roland DG purchase. He says, “This further supports the industry. It is big picture thinking. Through Roland Rental, this helps support our Australian economy to grow and prosper; and that is good news for everyone.”

Evolutionary path IN the 11 years since Roland Rental initiated a change in how Roland DG customers thought about financing options, the business landscape has changed. Stone says, “In many ways the business environment has become more benign but that hasn’t altered

its competitive nature. Recognising this, Roland DG has evolved Roland Rental from the simple Roland Rental option on equipment only, to now offering Roland Rental Plus and Roland Rental Platinum. “These new packages include extra items such as ink and service costs, giving our customers greater choice and flexibility while making it easy for them to get their business up and running without the upfront investment.” “Over the years, Roland Rental has worked hard to make the rental process as simple as possible, all the time delivering the great customer service that Roland DG focuses on.” He concludes, “With interest rates in Australia remaining low, there has never been a better time to finance your Roland DG equipment.”

Customers rate Roland Rental benefits GREG Stone says you don’t have to take his word for the effectiveness of Roland Rental. Valery and Brian Brown from Macarthur Signs and Graphics, financed a VG-640 through Roland Rental, found the overall experience easy. They say, “We cannot fault the ease of getting finance through Ecolease and Roland Rental. The staff are always easy to deal with and prompt. They are the best service provider we have used.” Andrew Bannerman of Kwik Kopy Chatswood, has financed three machines with Roland Rental. He says, “It was easy; it was 56

pleasant. Got the right advice, went through quickly so when an offer came through for the next two machines, it was a no brainer.” Roland DG lists a range of advantages from using Roland Rental:  Simplicity and speed - Simple documentation and approval without the requirement of financial statements for sums up to $50,000 ex GST (subject to credit criteria)  No residual responsibility - You have no large lump sum to pay at the end of term, just pay one extra repayment and own it

 Tax deductible - Rental payments are an expense item for reporting purposes and are 100 per cent tax deductible when equipment is used for business purposes  Conserve cash - Small monthly payments rather than one large upfront payment  Fixed monthly rental payments - Fixed payments throughout the term make budgeting easy  Government, Education and Corporate sectors - Rental payments are pure operating expense and may not require capital expenditure approval australianprinter.com.au

Orora hits double-digit profit growth ORORA has grown its full-year net profit after tax by 12 per cent, reaching $208.6m from the 2016/2017 result of $186.2m, in a set of positive results from the packaging and point of purchase giant. Sales revenue for the FY is up 5.2 per cent, reaching $4.2bn from $4bn in the prior corresponding period (pcp), while EBITDA grew 6.4 per

cent, reaching $445.3m from $418.4m. Earnings before interest and tax grew seven per cent to $323.4m from $302.3m. Split by region, both Australasia and North America grew revenues by 5.2 per cent, with North American revenues slightly edging out ahead at $2.14bn, with the remaining $2.10bn coming from local

Labelexpo sets programme

Amcor buys Bemis in mega-merger

THE educational programme for Labelexpo Americas 2018 has now been set, with all conference sessions planned. The two-day programme, which is sponsored by HP, comprises 12 themed conference sessions taking place on September 25-26, the first two days of the three-day show. A further three Label Academy led master classes will also take place over the second and third days of the show. Day one of the conference is designed to tackle the commercial side of the labels and package printing industry, examining workforce development and recruitment, mergers and acquisitions, the rise of printing on demand, and implementing innovative logistics labeling. The opening CEO converter panel discussion will explore how to create a productive company and align with a long-term strategy, attracting new business and maintaining relationships with key clients. Confirmed panelists for the September event include John McDowell, president of McDowell Label; Sandy Petersen, co-founder and owner of Digital Label Solutions; Bill Muir, president of Grand Rapids Label Company; and Micheal Lane, CEO of The Meyers Printing Companies.

AMCOR is purchasing US packaging giant Bemis, in a merger which will create a new holding company, New Amcor, with Bemis shareholders owning 29 per cent. The remaining 71 per cent of the company will be owned by Amcor shareholders, with New Amcor being listed on both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) along with the ASX. The new company is expected to have a $17bn market cap, with $13bn in sales. It will be incorporated in Jersey, US, with intended tax residence in the UK after closing. The company’s primary listing will be on the NYSE, with its ASX listing achieved through Chess Depository Interests (CDIs). The duo expect to achieve sales of US$13bn in flexible packaging, operating across 160 plants, leveraging Amcor’s strong position in the Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa, with Bemis’ strong presence in the North American flexible packaging market, and consumer packaging market. New Amcor anticipates US$180m of pre-tax annual cost synergies by the end of year three, with EBITDA of US$2.2bn once they are taken into account. Ron Delia, CEO, Amcor, says, “The strategic rationale for this combination and the financial benefits are highly compelling

shores. Overall, Australasia increased EBIT by $18.7m, an 8.7 per cent boost from the pcp, reaching $232.3m from $213.6m. Orora made substantial investments in the full-year, adding an EFI Nozomi singlepass digital corrugated press to both its Australian and North American manufacturing sites,

the third and fourth purchased and installed worldwide. It has also made moves to shield itself from the volatile pricing of the energy market, making Power Purchasing Agreements (PPAs) across South Australia, Victoria, and NSW. In NSW alone, Orora estimates the higher electricity prices had a $4.5m impact on its costs.

Growth through acquisition: Amcor buys Bemis for both Amcor and Bemis shareholders. We are convinced this is the right deal at the right time for both companies, and with the right structure for both sets of shareholders to participate in a unique value creation opportunity. Amcor identified flexible packaging in the Americas as a key growth priority and this transaction delivers a step change in that region. “There are an increasing number of opportunities arising for a leading packaging company to capitalise on shifting consumer needs, an evolving customer landscape and the need to provide responsible packaging solutions that protect the environment. With this transaction, Amcor will have a stronger value proposition with

the scale, breadth and resources to unlock value from these opportunities, for the benefit of our shareholders, customers and employees. “Amcor’s financial profile will be enhanced, and our existing capital allocation framework, or shareholder value creation model, will be maintained and strengthened with this transaction. “The combined company expects to have an investment grade balance sheet that provides immediate capacity for further disciplined investment as well as a compelling, progressive dividend. “Amcor will draw on our extensive merger integration experience to deliver the substantial benefits of this combination.”

NEWS: LABELS AND PACKAGING

Packaging giant buys boutique Aus agency GLOBAL prepress giant Sonoco-Trident (Trident) has acquired boutique prepress creative agency Digital Graphic Communications (DGC), based in Sydney. The two companies have been working together locally, and globally for four years within the consumer packaged goods industry, providing graphics management and digital prepress services.

Sonoco-Trident says the DGC acquisition adds a local and global client-base to the combined organisation. Dan Bunting, general manager, Trident, says, “As consumer behaviours and customer experiences continually evolve, delivering a seamless transition between the traditional retail grocery and digital shelf is paramount for success.

“At Trident, we believe the future state of artwork and pre-press is one of automation and technology. DGC’s creative mindset and their dedication to delivering quality work was a perfect fit. It was also important for us that the guiding principles of both companies connected. And they do.” Stephen Mott and Michael Ditchett, owners, DGC say, “Partnering with Trident over

the last four years, demonstrated to us that the drive for delivering quality and innovative services and solutions for our clients is part of their DNA. The synergies between our two companies are across prepress, digital and e-commerce, creative design, business analysis, technology and project management. “By coming together as one we will be able to streamline the processes and procedures.”

Label Power beats APAC printers

QLM merges with Label Magic

LABEL Power, a supplier of label systems, and trade printer of labels, has won the Special Recognition Award at the 11th HP Digital Print Excellence Awards 2018 Asia Pacific/Japan for HP Indigo Digital Press. The company was recognised for its Artie’s Spring Water label, in the non-alcoholic beverages category. The piece was printed on Silver PP stock with a matte overlaminate. James Malone, CEO, Label Power, says, “What stood out was the black and white photo, with interesting colour variances on it, especially with the finish. We have won other awards, though we don’t enter many. “We have Indigo presses, Mark Andy presses, and MPS UV-flexo presses. We finish our labels on our AVG Digicons. “We do a lot of trade work in labels, and also have our foundation clients.” Label Power has its own niche in the label printing game, in which it both completes print work for companies, and sells label systems. Malone explains, “What we say is we print labels for you, or sell you the system to print your own. We do not care which way you go, so long as we can help you out. Some want to print on demand, others want us to take care of it for them.”

QLM Label Makers has acquired Perth printer Label Magic, in a merger which will see the WA company trade under the QLM name. QLM has also recently opened operations in Cambodia, the seventh country the Queensland founded company operates in within the Asia Pacific. The team at Label Magic will remain, adding seven employees to QLM, while former director of the WA company, Jesse Bullied, will take the role of WA state sales manager for QLM. Sandy Bullied and Dennis Bullied of Label Magic will remain as directors and shareholders in the merged business. Simon Pugh, CEO, QLM Group, says, “Label Magic has a long history in the WA print industry and we are excited to formally have them as part of the QLM Group. We have worked with Sandy and the team for many years and we were looking for ways to grow both businesses. We worked out that collectively we would be able to provide more opportunities for both clients and the teams.” Label Magic says its decision to merge with QLM is the culmination of a strong trade partnership over the past five years. Sandy Bullied, director, Label Magic explains, “Merging

New Perth team: (l-r) Jesse Bullied, sales manager; Sandy Bullied, director; Taysha Hadley and Linda Noble, customer service; and Dennis Bullied, director of Label Magic with QLM seemed a natural progression. We have been working with QLM for so long we were part of the family, but as trade partners there were some limitations, particularly in the areas of large scale manufacturing. By merging, we see some real opportunities in this area. We also get to grow the opportunities for our team through the merger which is also exciting.” Andrew Siwicki, general manager, QLM Australia, says, “Label Magic and QLM are a perfect fit. Their strong values

and local team have made the ability to combine seamless. Our recent upgrades to machinery in both large scale flexo and HP Indigo digital will be able to provide cost-effective solutions to the WA market, all backed up by a strong local team they are familiar with.” Lindsay Nutley, marketing manager, QLM explains, “QLM has been supplying to the Perth market for many years, primarily associated with customers who have sites in other states where we have offices.”

Orora turning waste into power ORORA has launched a wastewater treatment plant at its Botany Paper Mill, which it says will generate 12 million kw/h of renewable energy per year for the company. The company also uses the heat from the engine to preheat its water in the mill, meaning that 90 per cent of the energy used in the process is captured and reused. The Botany treatment plant australianprinter.com.au

follows on from other wastewater investments by Orora. A spokesperson from the company says, “Not only is this great for the environment, the Botany Paper Mill treatment results in a 20 per cent return on the Orora’s $20m invesment, creating sustainable and reusable energy. “Our Fibre Packaging facility at Scoresby in Victoria, Australia has reduced its hazardous waste output by 95 per cent and water

use by 20 kilo litres a day.” It also follows Orora’s recent investments in wind power in Victoria and SA. Manufacturing paper and fibre-based packaging is a water intensive process, with Orora’s Botany site alone using 7 million litres of water per day, the equivalent of seven Olympicsized swimming pools. Waste water runs through an anaerobic digester, where

microbes, which are small micro organisms eat the waste nutrients and produce methane, which is a gas. The water is then filtered and sent to the sewer as cleaner waste. The methane gas that rises out of the water throughout the process is used to power an engine which Orora says generates 12 million kw/h of renewable energy per year to power its site.

printers will have to switch from flat-bed die-cutting to rotary diecutting technology. We already see it happening in Indonesia. We see a growth of 20 to 25 percent in rotary dies in the region year-on-year." RotoMetrics supplies some 70 dies a day in Southeast Asia, and 200 dies every day across Asia, from its Thai plant. The company showcased RotoRepel, a non-stick treatment for flexible dies and solid rotary dies. SPGPrints and its Southeast Asian distributor, Techno Global Graphics, reported a highly successful event, with visitors and enquiries from a wide geographic area representing interests beyond label printing. Jaap Storm, area sales manager, Label Printing, SPGPrints, says, "In addition to seeing existing customers and press manufacturing partners, we received many visits from newly established companies seeking to differentiate themselves, as well as businesses wanting to learn more about incorporating screen printing into their existing flexo, offset, and gravure workflows. Converters supplying beverage, food and personal care markets especially are recognizing rotary screen’s potential for building strong, identifiable brands. It is seen as the quality standard for opaque white ink. We had a surprising number of queries about tag and flexible packaging applications, and even a few about textile printing." Also represented by Press Systems are Sandon anilox rolls and Rotometal cylinders. Benjamart Fagg, managing director at Press Systems, said these products are well-established in the market and received a good number of enquiries. With all its clients performing well in the region, Press Systems is growing at 50 percent year-on-year and employs 30 people.

Techno Global Graphics represents a plethora of international brands, including AB Graphic, Contilaserline, Flexo Wash, Grafikontrol, GSE Dispensing, Kocher+Beck, SPGPrints, Unilux, and Vetaphone. The company’s Phatthira Sangchansri reported that Flexo Wash sold seven machines; Vetaphone sold one and AB Graphic sold a Digicon finishing system. SG Edge, an Indian manufacturer of label printing machines and ancillary equipment, reported a successful show, with CEO Santosh Kumar busy meeting printers from the region. Toyobo showcased waterwashable flexo plate Cosmo Light, which can be washed in tap water with a small amount of mild detergent. It eliminates the usage of hydrocarbon and hazardous solvents.
