Welcome W
elcome to our Christmas Summer edition for 2018. I wrote basically this same message for our Winter magazine earlier this year but unfortunately we still have stores falling prey to professional scam artists. These people are very clever and they make you feel they are legitimate by asking a number of astute questions as well as providing detailed information. Please make sure you speak with all of your staff and pass on this message – no epay representative will ever call you over the phone or visit your store and ask you to print out vouchers without first paying for the vouchers in full. Do not print out vouchers ever without first taking payment in full.
“Make sure you have space at the front of your store for all gift and gaming cards this summer as the business growth in both markets is over 50 per cent on last year.”
TO ADVERTISE P. 09 573 8350 Written and Produced by The Intermedia Group MANAGING DIRECTOR Simon Grover PUBLISHER James Wells EDITOR Gifford Lee ART DIRECTOR Ryan Vizcarra
Everyone needs to be more vigilant and all members of staff need to follow the correct procedures around the sales of gift cards and vouchers – both in-store and over the phone. I would also like to apologise to any retailer who has been targeted or victimised by scammers in the past 12 months. Unfortunately bad people exist and others get caught up in their illegal activities. The very busy trading period is nearly upon us and we have all of our epay sales staff embarking on a two-to-three week road trip to your stores to merchandise all of your top selling gift card displays for the Christmas sales. Make sure you have space at the front of your store for all gift and gaming cards this summer as the business growth in both markets is over 50 per cent on last year. Thanks for your support and all the very best for December trading and a great Kiwi summer. Best regards,

WHAT IS IT?
A mobile wallet allows consumers to pay for items using their smartphones rather than bank cards and often users get discounts and rewards for using certain apps. It is the fastest growing payment type worldwide and there are several key players dominating the market, like Alipay, WeChat Pay and more. 16

Giapo gift cards available at giftstation.co.nz!
A BNZ CurrencySelect EFTPOS Business Profile: Giapo Ice Cream, Auckland How long have you been established? Giapo started 11 years ago but we’ve only been at our Gore Street location near Auckland’s Britomart Station for a little over a year. We relocated from our space next to the Civic Theatre on Queen Street. The move has enabled us to realise our ice cream dreams. Our bigger kitchen has given us space to take groups on Kitchen Tours to showcase the science and technology behind our creations, to treat guests to multi-sensory ice cream experiences in our Chef’s Table experience and introduce our academic programme – the VIP learning experience. What is your ethos and mission statement? For so long, ice cream and gelato have been about having a scoop or two on a cone. We want to change the very function of ice cream and how people experience it. We’re not focused on merely changing our flavours, we’re endeavouring to improve on everything: from how it looks (like with our chocolate colossal squid) to how people interact with it – such as with our wearable ice cream cones.

For so long, the history of ice cream has been dominated by the Americans and Italians. With our strong dairy sector here in New Zealand, it only makes sense to make Aotearoa an ice cream destination too. We are committed to bringing the world to New Zealand to experience Kiwi creations. How do international visitors impact the business? International visitors are vital to the business. We’re fortunate to have visitors from countries such as China, Japan, Australia and the United States among many others. We strive to be relevant to them. How have you benefited from BNZ CurrencySelect EFTPOS? Giapo is entirely cashless. We don't accept cash and BNZ Currency Select has been a big help for us. We’re pleased to accept currencies our customers are familiar with, so they know exactly how much they are being charged. What does the future hold? To get better and better at what we do every day. To find new ways to experience ice cream and making New Zealand famous for it.

How beneficial is your relationship with epay?
A 2degrees Exclusive Mark Payne
General Manager - Consumer Sales for 2degrees
2degrees’ relationship with ePay goes back more than 10 years now and is wide-ranging – from using ePay’s top up platform to provide recharge vouchers at more than 5000 points of presence to using ePay’s POS and stock merchandising solutions across grocery stores, gas stations and convenience stores throughout the country, it really has been key to helping us deliver a seamless customer experience. Throughout our working relationship, the ePay team has been nothing but professional, helpful and easy to deal with. We know that ePay is a partner we can trust to always do right by us and our customers, who range from retail and distribution partners through to the end consumer.
How long have you been with 2degrees?
I started with 2degrees in March 2007 back when we were called NZ Communications and before we had even finished building the mobile network. I was employee number 11 – now we have over 1200 employees. It’s been fantastic being part of the journey.
What separates 2degrees from any other Telco company?
What is the key to being a successful Telco retailer for 2degrees? In any industry – but especially in a highly competitive industry like telecommunications – innovation is key to success. It’s safe to say that innovation has been a major driver of our success since our inception. Before 2degrees, there were no bundled value packs, no carryover minutes, no data sharing. We introduced all these products to the market and our competitors followed suit. It’s also really important to get the core stuff right. For us, entering the market against two very well established big players, we chose to target value, simplicity and accessibility. We also sell our products and services in a number of different retail environments – this gives us wide reach but it also means we need to make sure our products, POS messaging, training and merchandising align with each environment. For example, if we are selling our services in an unassisted store such as a petrol station, we keep the messaging and the product type simple (e.g. Prepay top ups or SIM cards). Conversely, if we are communicating offers in our own stores or mass retailers (e.g. Noel Leeming), we make sure there are experienced staff that can talk through more complex products and services.
There’s many things that set 2degrees apart – from the value we offer our customers to our reputation as the challenger brand that brought competition to the New Zealand mobile market. But if I had to pick one thing I would say it’s the fact that we keep things simple. From our products and services to the way we market them – removing jargon and the unnecessary complexity that the telco industry has been known for in the past. We keep our plans simple, our tech easy to use and our customer service local and approachable.
What are some exciting 2degrees innovations? Data Clock is an industry-first service we are pretty excited about. Our Data Clock app lets customers buy mobile data in affordable bursts, giving them the freedom to use data whenever they need without chewing through their mobile plan data. You can buy as little as 15 minutes for 40c to sort a ride home, or as much as 24 hours for $6 to binge watch your favourite show. Another innovation we are proud of is WiFi Calling – a new service that allows you to make and receive calls and texts anywhere in the world that has a suitable WiFi connection, even if there is no mobile coverage. It’s really easy to use with no apps to download, logins or linking contacts – you just use your phone as you normally do.
