Gift fairs are back in Australia as Melbourne Gift & Lifestyle returns to the MCEC and Reed Gift Fairs and Life Instyle welcome back retailers and wholesalers at the ICC Sydney.

After more than a year, the gift industry has come together again to showcase and discover new products, see old friends and make some new ones. First up was Melbourne Gift & Lifestyle at the MEC in March, followed by Life Instyle and Reed Gift Fairs Sydney at the ICC in April. Both retailers and wholesalers seemed eager to get back to business. We have selected some of our favourite companies and products we spotted at the fairs. Froth N Flames is a Melbourne based family owned boutique business, which handmakes eco-friendly, all-natural palm free vegan soap and scented soy candle products. Ingredients are locally sourced and Australian made.

Look WHO’S TALKING

As we are looking forward to attending more trade fairs this year, we chatted to some exhibitors about their (first) gift fair experience. Inga Carlmark, Finmark sales manager We have come into a year of unknowns but we decided it was important to exhibit to remind customers we are here if they need us and for us to have an important catch-up with the industry. The gift fairs work in two ways–they are helpful for the retailers to see new products and ask questions, but as a supplier it’s our chance to talk to retailers about how things are going, which products are selling and what is missing from the market. There was an overall feel of happiness and gratitude at Gift & Lifestyle and to be able to connect with customers again was wonderful. We all couldn’t believe we were actually there! It was such a busy and exciting three days and we were so grateful to be back at gift fairs. Nikki Sparkes, founder, Aggre I decided to exhibit at Life Instyle as a way of introducing my brand into the domestic wholesale market. After a year of email threads and social distancing, it was so lovely to finally meet people face to face. I had been in contact with so many of these amazing humans before the show, so it was a real privilege to get to engage with and enjoy getting to know them and hear about their stores in more detail. As far as my business goes, I think it is a really great opportunity to be seen by such a vast audience of businesspeople. I really believe that to say that you are exhibiting at Life Instyle, is a reflection of the professionalism of my business; that we’re here to stay and ready to make our mark on the world.

28  giftguideonline.com.au

Lee Drury, CEO & founder, Glass on the Grass We wanted to be part of the solution. Expertise Events and Exponet, the organiser and stand building company, have both been relentless in lobbying government to get trade shows up and running, so when they got the green light for Gift & Lifestyle Melbourne we jumped on board. While the show was smaller than pre-Covid, we had a great show. We met many fabulous retailers and with our eco-friendly products as part of their offering we’re thrilled. Iain Marr, national sales manager, Cotton Candy Imports We wanted to get our products back in front of our customers and to open new avenues for distribution. We are planning on doing the new Gold Coast Fair in July, followed by Melbourne August and then Sydney September, all going well. Josh Armstrong, founder & director, We the Wild When you want to disrupt an industry like we do, awareness is key. For us, Reed Gift Fair was a key opportunity to spread our mission of plant care that’s better for people, plants and the planet. It’s so heartening to hear retailers so eager to join our cause, and we’ve been thrilled by the feedback so far. James Boardman, founder, Alcoholder The decision to exhibit at Gift & Lifestyle was a little bit spur of the moment, but seeing as though we hadn’t exhibited in over 12 months, we figured we’d use the show as a bit of a barometer of what to expect for what’s next on the calendar. Exhibiting in a state (VIC) that has been subject to the tightest and longest lockdowns in the country really gave us some perspective, and helped set our expectations. The feedback from retailers was positive for the most part. The general consensus was that people were keen to get the ball rolling again and were delighted that we had made the effort to exhibit. There were some comments criticising how small the event was, but in reality it is up to brands like us to take the risk and exhibit.

Michelle Hartjes, founder, Bespoke Packaging We decided to exhibit at Gift & Lifestyle because we wanted to get back to business after this crazy long time, we really missed the conversations and being able to show customers everything we do. We have so much to offer to many different types of businesses and when they can visually see what we do, as well as being able to touch the products, this really helps. AndrewMcGregor, managing director, Artiwood Australia We have been exhibiting for more than 20 years, but this is the first time with Reed. It has been a very positive experience. Many new leads, good quality leads, it was very encouraging to see so much support for the industry– we saw more customers come through from interstate than we expected. About half of the new customers had only been in business for less than 12 months. Gail Bouchard, founder, Next Generation Homewares Our company’s main base is in Victoria and considering the industry hadn’t had a trade show for 12 months we thought it was a good opportunity to start reconnecting with customers again and exposing our new Marcus & Marcus products. I’m happy we exhibited, we were able to attract a number of new customers who may not have noticed our Marcus

30  giftguideonline.com.au

& Marcus children’s range previously. It’s easy to get lost amongst the larger exhibitors at bigger trade shows when you’re a smaller exhibitor. Gary Davis, director, Get Posh We made the decision to exhibit to help kick-start the industry following Covid. We went into the fair with no high expectations and were very pleased with the result. The response from retailers was great as they all wanted to get back to face to face contact with trade fairs. Fran Szmark, AcquaBoss founder The show has been unbelievable. It’s the first time we have launched AcquaBoss in Australia and it has been amazing. We had enquiries from newsagents, pharmacies, gift stores, resorts and people just wanting one for themselves. We also had people wanting to be an agent for AcquaBoss or a distributor, so when we get home we have got a lot of work to do. Exhibiting at Reed Gift Fair has been very exciting and definitely worthwile. Sheldon Mayer, founder, Men’s Republic It was really good to see so many familiar faces back after the Covid ‘siesta’. We had a tremendous response to our new products with records results being written. Men’s Republic is becoming the go-to supplier in Australia for Men’s Gifts that are on-trend, functional and highly saleable.

the wall

There is nothing better than a piece of wall art to elevate a home décor. With more people spending time at home during the cold winter months, this is the perfect time to add some colour and style up a home. NF Living is sharing some tips on how your customers can use art to make a room pop.

We love a bold dining room. So often we’re trying to style our dining rooms with generic, light-coloured accessories that are easily matched to other colours when we should be taking the plunge and diving right into a theme like this room. Stunning grey walls, a bold geometric rug and Scandinavian inspired dark timber dining chairs set the scene for a very distinctive dining experience but the addition of the Zebra Love and Giraffe Love paintings provide the inspiration to spark great conversation over meals.

32  giftguideonline.com.au

decor

It’s a classic combination…grey lounge, neutral walls, rose gold accents, greenery and flowers. The perfect living space for a high tea with friends, but the walls need a boost to really make the look cohesive. By hanging the Leisure Vibes and Hidden Paradise paintings the room now takes on a new look going from drab to fab instantly.

An unlikely combination but always a winning one is pink and black. When dealing with dusty roses and pale blush tones we’re often drawn to the use of white, timber or metallic accents but we often overlook black which may be one of the strongest pairings. Set off by the charcoal curtains and jet black side table, the room needs something else to make those black accents even more pronounced. The Floral Highlight and Blushing Centrepiece paintings achieve this instantly.

An entryway is the first thing you see when you enter a home. It should have impact and tell the story of the theme of your home décor. This entryway inspires thoughts of a luxe Hamptons holiday home on the beach, with the classic white lanterns, clean timber and sea coral accents. To finish the look, the pair of Ataraxy and Elysian paintings sets the tone for the entire household.

May 2021  33

decor

This Moroccan-inspired room features stunning warm tones on the walls and reflected through the rust coloured furniture and accents. All that’s missing is a wall feature to tie the whole look together. The glowing orange tones in the Moroccan Arches and Hallways prints work well to bring both light and depth to this room.

Breathe life into blank white walls while staying true to your monochrome colour palette. The use of the Twisted Bead and Twisted Flow abstract paintings provides much needed depth and interest to this otherwise basic room. In many ways, a high contrast between black and white also serves to assist other colours in popping even more. In this case, we see the green potted fern become even more vibrant and striking in this room.

Pale grey walls, a dark hutch and bright white stools work well together to set the tone for this industrial entryway. The red brick in the room beyond brings warmth to this scene and these tones are echoed through similar tones on the wooden river house on stilts depicted in the Far North Serenity print. The light coloured sky in the image ties well with the crisp white metal stools and now the room is complete.

decor

When choosing what to feature on dark grey walls, take notes from the items in the room which you’ve chosen to brighten the space. Creams and blush pinks work perfectly here with light coloured natural timbers and rose gold accessories to create a slightly feminine mood. Follow that lead by accentuating those pale pink tones with the Raja and Rani abstract paintings.

Warm tones of burnt orange, rusty suede dining chairs and grainy timber in this kitchen/ dining area inspire all the toasty feelings of being surrounded by good food and cooking smells. But whilst enjoying your morning coffee you find yourself staring at a blank white wall which doesn’t reflect the tone of the room. With the easy addition of the Abstract Protea paintings suddenly the warm, glowing feeling of the room is solidified.

Sage green, crisp white and natural timber is the most popular home interior palette right now. Create a nature-inspired sanctuary by staggering these Australian native flora paintings. The combination of timber frames on the Round Gumnut, Gumnut Bunch and Bush Gumnut paintings on the green wall work well to create a stunning soft and serene look.

“We pride ourselves on offering premium quality, custom made bedroom furniture that offers a 15 year structural warranty.” All locally handcrafted with materials sourced from local Australian suppliers, BedsAhead is an Australian, family run business that specialises in custom made beds, bed heads, headboards and other upholstered furnishings including bed bases, valances, blanket boxes, ottomans, pelmets and scatter cushions. “Customers love that they can create their own bed head simply by choosing the perfect design, fabric, size and height along with any other design details. We will then custom make the piece to order, exactly to the specifications, in our Sydney Warehouse, allowing a fast turnaround time of approximately four to six weeks to deliver the finished products Australia wide. “Our newly launched Esmerelda bedhead is just one example of a custom made bedhead becoming a new addition to our range following modifications to a current design by a customer,” adds Bostan. Interior designer at Oak & Orange, Heather Gampe, says when designing and styling a bedroom, a bedhead can be the biggest statement in the room. “Working with BedsAhead has enabled us to custom design our bedheads to fit a particular room and style,” she explains. “Michelle and the team are so helpful and we have loved the quality of the bedheads they have made for 44  giftguideonline.com.au
