hat have you been missing lately? It’s not just the face to face time many of us have missed, but it’s the ability to put into perspective where we are going in the future. Following a uniquely overwhelming year for many of us, there’s a lot of things we miss, and its different for everyone. In the same vein, there are some things we don’t miss and we’ve enjoyed the ability to re-navigate how some of these not so favourable elements may look, But when you strip away the last minute change of plans, the inability to lock things in too far in advance, most of all it’s the human interaction and community spirit in what we do that has left it hard for us to feel as rewarded as in previous years. Despite regular online meetings, Zooms and digital education, we all need a bit of live nourishment and interaction in our lives. We are so excited to be bringing you Hair Festival 2021 (www.hairfestival.com.au) with tickets now on sale sporting a special first release discount, make sure you get the top picks of the weekend and plan ahead so you don’t miss out. It’s been incredible to see our remarkable industry’s ability to adapt and achieve even under significant economic consequences and lockdowns, so many of us rose above it and proved just how creative we can be across both business support and getting on the tools and having fun. The after effects of our new ways of engaging have resulted in not only changes to the way we work but also our mental health and in turn physical energy – it’s simply harder to focus when the soul is not being nourished. This is also why our Hair Festival program has been curated to meet the needs of our industry now – with topics on Emotional Resilience and being Anti-Fragile to practical education classes as low as $55, we have something suited for what you need now, and nothing that you don’t. It’s safe to say we’ve lost a little of our own personal motivation through all the business and school closures, stay-at-home orders, face masks curfews, social distancing, remote work, empty grocery store shelves, a lack of understanding both politically and socially, whole industries paused - conventions, concerts, sports, tourism, restaurants, movies, all have all become a less significant to our daily life and we’ve had to refine how we can be inspired away from people arounfd us. Forgive yourself if your creativity has been compromised, but in saying that where do we look and how do we find a suitable balance between digital and physical? We have to turn up for online education but think about the fact that do we really need to show up all hands and hearts blazing like we do in a room filled with passion? It’s safe to say there’s a different level of buy in to a room filled with like-minded people. But this is a level of energy we’ve laid dormant for a while and it’s time to start tapping back into that going out and showing up energy. On page 62 we take a look at how to keep our energy levels up thanks to a new wellness pill, Healixir, that’s changing the face of supplements, an essential ingredient to staying creative and focused. While we haven’t had the chance to be face to face as much, we’ve had the luxury of recalibrating how we can find balance and looking forward to the times when we can come together in a more conscious way. Never before has our industry had such an affordable and diverse event at their fingertips with a wonderland style party you’ve always wanted set to become a real festival style party for hairdressing that’s open to ALL of you. We can’t wait to bring you together in an environment where both brands and individuals shop, learn, compete and connect. Those of you who haven’t been able to travel very far yet, the time is now to remain positive about June, to plan ahead and make sure you don’t miss out on sharing what you love. In the meantime, we will continue to bring you the latest industry developments, collaborations and content both online and in print. If one thing hasn’t changed it’s our complete commitment to hairdressing, its diversity and you our passionate community. We can’t wait to see you all in 2021!

VIEW THE REVERIE COLLECTION COS SAKKAS’ REVERIE collection is a must-see addition to your inspiration mood board. The editorial offering from UK hairdresser, TONI&GUY legend and British Hairdresser of the Year nominee Cos Sakkas puts bold, unique shapes, cuts, colours and intricate details in front of a calming pastel set of backdrops, united largely by their sheer technicality and skilful ambition. In aesthetic there’s really only one word for it – dreamy. “My Reverie collection is all about being pleasantly lost in your thoughts,” Cos said. “In a world of restrictions, it’s a moment you can lose yourself in a daydream and immerse yourself in a world of creativity and fantasy.” In a collection where every look is hero, some particular techniques stand out as features, such a as trending, silver modern mullet and a blonde counterpart that show just how many shapes exist in the mullet realm. Other must-see details include the intricate sewn braiding of a blonde look, a retro short fringe, the clash of textures in a short brunette look and some stellar hair height on a fiery red look. A short hair black and grey look merges tones, textures and materials for true dimension.

AVEDA GOES 100 PER CENT VEGAN IN HAIR AND PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS GLOBAL HAIR AND beauty juggernaut Aveda has announced that they are now 100 per cent vegan, adding to their brand identity as a high performance, plant powered hair care brand with a mission of care, and affecting their portfolio of over 500 products, including hair care, hair colour, body care, makeup and aroma products. The brand has been cruelty free since its 1978 launch, and was largely vegan aside from some ingredients of honey, beeswax and beeswax-derived components.
ROYALS HAIR HOST 2020 SALON AWARDS ROYALS HAIR HOSTED their annual salon awards for 2020, honouring their talented hairdressers and team as a whole and offering a glamorous night to send of 2020 in style. The salon business, with four Sydney locations to its name, is owned and operated by Mary and Adam Alamine, with some locations co-owned and co-operated by Travis Bandiera and Hamza Alamine, and a dedicated education sector as well. The awards evening showed off all of these aspects of the salon DNA, by commending both rising and established hairdressers and presenting runway shows by the apprentices and team that spoke to the style, inspiration and talent of the Royals team. “Our annual awards is about recognising our teams achievements and we wanted to come together to celebrate and

“Removing beeswax was one of the biggest challenges for Aveda formulators because it helps to create texture, structure, colour payoff, and smoothness,” explained Christine Hall, Aveda’s VP of Research and Development. “One common alternative to beeswax for lip products specifically is synthetic beeswax, a wax that is petroleum derived. However, at Aveda, because we are committed to maximising our use of naturally-derived ingredients, we opted instead to create a unique blend of plant-based butters and waxes that are strong enough for application, but also feel good on your lips.” “We used an ingredient called beeswax absolute in some of our aromas. It is extracted from honeycomb or from cakes of beeswax. It provided a sweet, warm, complex note and helped increase its ‘staying power.’ We have worked hard to recreate these formulas using only non-animal derived ingredients to ensure that our iconic aromas would not be affected,” added Kate Rosso, Aveda’s Principle Perfumer. The decision is decades in the making and rooted in the brand’s central ethos and founding mission of caring for the planet. It is the latest in a long list of Aveda’s historic sustainability victories. “Behind the Aveda brand is a team of people that are passionate and energised by our mission to care for the world we live in, and our transition to 100 per cent vegan formulations is a testament to the hard work of this team as they embarked on reformulating and repackaging our products,” said Barbara De Laere, Aveda Global Brand President. “This work has been in progress for more than three years and it is a big milestone for us. It is part of our brand promise to create high-performance products that are 90 per cent naturally-derived, on average, and formulated with our mission of sustainability in mind. We believe in no-compromise formulas at Aveda. There is no reason why we can’t have sustainable, animalfriendly products that work for all hair types and textures.” www.aveda.com.au

JUST CUTS #HEARTS4SANE RAISES $20,000 FOR SANE AUSTRALIA JUST CUTS HAS proudly announced the success of its philanthropic, preChristmas campaign with #Hearts4Sane raising $20,000 for SANE Australia. Clients and staff came together to purchase over $16,000 SANE Hearts in salons in just five days, all of which were displayed in salons. “I’m amazed by this effort from our 2,500 Australian stylists and their Clients for SANE Australia,” said Just Cuts CEO, Amber Manning, who presented a cheque for the donations at the Just Cuts Academy in Caringbah, Sydney. “I was incredibly proud to scroll through social media shots of salons covered with blue hearts over our 5 day fundraising drive, and the amount raised by our clients and teams is especially impressive considering COVID has impacted trading for so many small businesses like ours.” SANE Australia supports people with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as their carers, friends and family. The organisation will use donations to reinforce existing support services including a national freecall help centre with experienced counsellors and online chat capability and 24/7 moderated online forums with live chat. www.justcuts.com.au 16 INSTYLE

to individually fundraise and sign up to join one of the five cleanup events scheduled in Brisbane, Byron Bay, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. “At Aveda we are committed to bettering the world we live in,” said Aveda Brand General Manager Clint Piper. “Not just in the beauty space, but in community and environment. Through these meaningful partnerships with local charities and brands, we are creating movement of people who are connected to the planet. VALE ARTURO TAVERNA ARTAV AUSTRALIA FOUNDER and beloved hair industry member Arturo Taverna, has sadly passed away at the age of 85, peacefully at home and with his loved ones. With a career that started over 60 years ago, Arturo was widely respected in the industry, as a hairdresser, salon owner, brand leader, businessman and icon. Arturo began his hairdressing career in the 1950s, soon opening as many as 30 hair and beauty salons in South Australia. He was known for his warmth and commitment, becoming a beacon for hair and beauty professionals who wanted to learn and grow their craft. Arturo dedicated his own time and energy to create a supportive environment for his staff and foster a family culture, investing in hairdressers’ long-term careers. He had as many as 40 staff in just a single salon at the height of his salon empire. He was passionate about creating local, natural, and sustainably sourced professional hair and beauty products, founding and elevating Artav Australia in that commitment, and producing 1,500 products across 6 internationally renowned brands altogether. In this endeavour he was always dedicated to the needs of salons and clients, committing to creating professional, salongrade products at a fair price point. Arturo was honoured in person, online and, fittingly, in a memorial at the Artav Australia factory, by so many community members that considered him family and a mentor figure in their own careers. He has been memorialised in local South Australian print and radio media as well, with citizens calling in to remember him fondly, as he touched the lives of so many and became a local household name. In his storied career Arturo held many esteemed titles, including Master’s Hairdressers Association of South Australia president, Hairdressers Cooperative of South Australia chairman and Honorary Life Member and Hall of Fame Inductee of the Hairdressers Association of South Australia. Arturo’s life was shaped by the hair industry, something he was passionate about consistently throughout his lifetime. Even up until some of the last months of his life, he continued to drive himself to work and be kept up to date on business matters, even leaving home as early as 3:30am to set up the office and greet workers. His beloved children, Anthony, Sonia, Jeanette and Andrew, took the reins from him in his successful family business. Arturo 20 INSTYLE
leaves behind this close family, including his wife of 60 years, Lina, and his loving grandchildren. “You don’t build a business,” Arturo once said. “You build people, and they build it. Treat the business you’re working for as if it’s your own. Continue to educate yourself, no matter what level you’re at. Be a lifelong learner. Education is the most important part of being a hairdresser today, as our industry is constantly evolving.” This ingrained humility personified Arturo, known as a true gentleman, mentor and family man, while also being a pioneer in the industry and true force to be reckoned with in his long and important career. He will be missed by the Artav Australia family, local South Australian hair community and industry at large.

CONNECTED TONI&GUY FOUND A WAY FOR ITS WHOLE GLOBAL COMMUNITY TO COME TOGETHER ONLINE, WITH A SHOW THAT SPOKE TO THE NEVER-ENDING IMPACT, ARTISTRY AND TITULAR CONNECTIVITY OF THIS INCOMPARABLE HAIR SUPERPOWER. HAIRDRESSING CAMARADERIE WAS a major bright spark in 2020 and TONI&GUY realised that important quality to its fullest potential with the inaugural CONENCTED global digital event, a noted celebration of inspiration, education and community, fittingly presented to 5500 attendees online. The hour long spectacle was a truly global affair, showcasing the skills of teams from the UK, Japan, Italy, Spain, China and our own Australian talents. The evening presented the TONI&GUY 2021 campaigns, titled Utilitarian, Keep it Real and Reverie, which all fall under the greater CONNECTED brand education umbrella. The agenda also saw Fashion Week presentations from London, Milan and Beijing and an Avant Garde finale showcase. “It’s been a challenging time over the past nine months, but what a journey we have had. We have made improvements to all our salons; 1700 stylists have learnt and implemented our TONI&GUY Gold Standard Hygiene client promise to keep all of our salons safe and we’ve had 8000 downloads of our education streaming platform: TONI&GUY Digital Academy,” said Global Creative Director, Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck in an opening address. “As an industry we have faced challenges we never expected, but what strikes me is how, as a global family, TONI&GUY has seized this opportunity,” continued CEO Nigel Darwin. “We may not be meeting face to face, but every TONI&GUY hairdresser from more than 50 countries around the world are joining together, and that is the strongest foundation we could have wished for.” Starting creative sessions came courtesy of International Artistic Director Cos Sakkas and Eamon Boreham, who introduced the three campaigns. More specifically, Utilitarian embodies health, beauty, knowledge, wellness, diversity and selfexpression. “We’re seeing clients looking for a massive change – they want to express their individualism”, Cos explained of this trend. “Clients are looking for organic, natural finishes through styling and colour,” added International Technical Director, Siobhan Golden. The Keep It Real campaign is thanks to label.m, celebrating self-expression, the people that truly make up the brand – think models, clients and staff – and diversity. Lastly, Reverie is a dynamic new hairdresser focused and exclusive campaign, described as “immersing yourself in a day dream of creativity” by Cos. “It’s all about imagination and pushing the art of creative cut 24 INSTYLE
and colour with editorial finishes and no rules or limits,” said International Artistic Director, Indira Schauwecker and Francesco Fontana. In the spirit of community, the event celebrated everyone at the heart of TONI&GUY, from hairdressers to education and business partners, many of who shared their own secrets for success from around the world. Our Australian team represented our local industry well. Comprised of Aarron Baker, Roberto Pozzato, Maddy Robinson and Cathy King, the hairdressers each presented their own unique techniques alongside the Tokyo and Milan teams, perfectly identifying upcoming hair fashion trends. Another inspiring presentation came via Efi Davies, who presented fifteen years of London Fashion Week collaborations, which typically consist of 80 fashion show partnerships a season. Celebrating the fifteen year anniversary for TONI&GUY and seven-year partnership as the Official Haircare Product of LFW for label.m, Efi showed off hair and fashion designs from IA London, DB Berdan, A-Jane and Simon Mo, highlighting product heroes Shine Mist, Volume Mousse, Texturising Volume Spray and Brunette Dry Shampoo. The Avant Garde finale worked within the theme that nothing can stop TONI&GUY education, inspiration and education – not even a pandemic – with dynamic looks from designer Cimone, consisting of bright and bold textures and shapes. There’s nothing like pure, unadulterated artistry to fire up artistic minds and connect communities the world over. TONI&GUY continues to show why it’s an unstoppable worldwide juggernaut. WILDE THING A NEW PRODUCT HAS LANDED ON AUSTRALIAN SHORES, FROM THE ESTEEMED CREATIVE MIND OF INDUSTRY LEGEND OSCAR CULLINAN AND OFFERING A NEW TAKE ON NATURAL HAIR. WELCOME WILDE BY OSCAR. WILDE BY OSCAR, that’s Oscar Cullinan of Oscar Oscar salons fame, has launched in Australia, combining nature and science for a luxe haircare line specifically made for your Australian clients. The range targets hair concerns created by our harsh national climate, solving these problems with quality ingredients for optimal hair health. Oscar brings three decades of experience to the endeavour, using his knowledge as a salon owner and hairdresser to find the pathway to truly healthy and lustrous hair, especially when counteracting the harsh environmental aggressors of sun and sea. This range came to life when Oscar bought land in Byron Bay, NSW, and utilised the key ingredient from his farm, Hemp Seed, as a vital restorative element, as merged with other necessary natural components such as Kakadu Plum, Wattle Seed and Lemon Myrtle for the magic formula. These ingredients combine to repair damage, increase hair strength, revive protein, build elastin and collagen, protect against UV rays and heat, moisturise dry hair, and improve shine and softness. Importantly WILDE is an Australian made, vegan and cruelty free line. “The regenerative effects WILDE has on hair is nothing short of incredible. For years I have been working on developing the line, but it wasn’t until experimenting
with Hemp Seed oil in hair, that it all came together. It was the silver bullet ingredient I had been looking for,” Oscar said. “WILDE is an ode to nature plus nurture,” he continued. “My passion for the land has given me a true understanding for the power of the plant. I have taken this belief in nature and reverse engineered its potential to create something genuinely beautiful. By adding the power of modern science to the organic strength of nature, these treatments provide stunning results and simply, I am incredibly proud.” The range has launched with a Kakadu Plum + Hemp Seed Moisture Restore Masque and Wattle Seed + Hemp Seed Protein Revival Masque. The two key treatment masques hydrate, repair and restore moisture, gloss and vitality to dry and damaged strands, and deeply treat hair for restored elasticity, strength, nourishment, smoothness and gloss, respectively. Both products are housed in luxurious packaging and are currently stocked across all 14 Oscar Oscar Salon locations. FESTIVAL DETAILS WE LOOK FORWARD TO HOW HAIR FESTIVAL WILL RUN WITH OPTIMAL HEALTH AND SAFETY AS A PRIORITY. HAIR FESTIVAL 2021 is drawing ever nearer, and we are already counting down to the inspiring education agenda and iconic Sydney venue, Carriageworks, all taking place over the June long weekend. With that in mind, we’re also cognizant of what that event needs to look like in 2021. While Australia has done extremely well to handle COVID-19, and the vaccine will start rolling out in the months before Hair Festival, the event will still have a comprehensive COVID-Safe plan, as outlined by BHA Media Pty Ltd (a subsidiary of The Intermedia Group), organisers of Hair Festival. This will ensure all guests, from attendees, to exhibitors, speakers and staff, can celebrate the industry while prioritising health and safety as well. This framework, in line with New South Wales Government’s physical distancing regulations required at the time of the event, will include space regulations, directional signage and safe distance allowances between booths and aisles for circulation in the event MarketPlace. Crowd density will be monitored and admission times staggered if needed. In education, the sessions will offer a conference-style layout to allow physical distancing. More broadly, an increased use of technology will facilitate contactless registration and monitor numbers of participants on the show floor at any one time. BHA Media will work closely with venue cleaning staff to ensure constant routine cleaning measures, as well as operational measures during the event and deep cleaning practices, elevating already high standards of cleanliness and hygiene protocols. This will include increased cleaning and disinfecting processes throughout the venue, sanitising stations and thorough cleaning, sanitation and disinfection regimes of commonly used areas. Guests who have experienced cold or flu like symptoms in the past 14 days, are awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test or have returned from overseas or a hotspot area will be asked to stay home and take care rather than attending. Importantly, Carriageworks is a registered COVID-Safe business, with measures currently in place including QR Code registrations at entry, strong hand hygiene facilities and physical distancing measures. 28 INSTYLE

DOORWAY THE PATH IS OPEN FOR VICTORY FOR AUSTRALIA’S TALENTED HAIRDRESSING COMMUNITY, AS THE AUSTRALIAN HAIR INDUSTRY AWARDS (CREATIVE) OPEN THEIR ENTRY PROCESS AND ENCOURAGE ALL WILLING PARTICIPANTS TO START SUBMITTING. THE QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY Weekend, AKA the weekend of hairdressing, is quickly rushing toward us and, with that, both the Australian Hair Industry Awards (Creative) and Hair Festival are opening up for business. As such, the AHIAs are available to enter with online photographic submissions and Hair Festival is open for registrations. The awards are run by Mocha Publishing, extending on almost ten years of events management in running the Australian Hairdressing Industry Awards (Business). These new awards create a comprehensive portfolio of award for Mocha Publishing, covering everything from business to creativity and artistry in every regard. The AHIAs (Business) will remain in their current format and will follow the creative awards with a date set for October 10, 2021 on the Gold Coast. The deadline for the photographic submissions is March 22, from there finalists will be announced on April 19 and the second round of written submissions will be due by May 17. 100 judges, the biggest panel in Australian hair award history, will decide who advances. All finalist collections will be displayed in the awards gallery at Hair Festival over June 13 and 14 at Carriageworks, before the awards ceremony on the night of June 14, hosted at The Star, Sydney. “I was so excited to see the new AHIA Creative Awards launched recently. After Expo announced it was no more, I believe there was huge hole in the competition calendar,” said hair icon Dee Parker Attwood. “Naturally Linda Woodhead and Mocha Publishing are the perfect solution to create this new event. ONSTAGE Awards. I look forward to see how it evolves and personally now all I need is my entry pack to arrive in my email.” “Mocha is a powerhouse when it comes to conducting industry awards. And now the final piece of the puzzle is the launch of AHIA creative awards,” agreed hair legend Sharon Blain. “I’m looking forward to supporting these awards and embracing a new era of creativity.” The award categories cover pinnacle titles such as Australian, New Zealand and International Hairdresser of the Year, as well as state categories. They also include awards for emerging talents (Apprentice and New Creative Talent of the Year), men’s hair experts, colourists, cutting aficionados and Avant Garde style, as well as combined categories looking at teams and collaborations. A People’s Choice category, as well as Independent Stylist of the Year, and a video Photographic Collection of the year, also voted by the people, further extend the artistry, while the Hall of Fame speaks to the legacy of the industry. Young stylists can also submit their entry to be on the Hot Shots Team. Overall, the categories in the new AHIA recognise exceptional creative talent represented in photographic collections and a broad look at careers and further business acumen with the written component. In this historic year, this written component may provide insight on how the entrant dealt with the challenges of the past year for business and creative success. All categories carry strict criteria that must be met with full description and all rules and regulations available for download on the Awards Entry Website. Written submissions are only expected from finalists. “As one door closes another opens. This is how I feel about the exciting news from the Mocha team announcing the AHIA Creative Awards,” enthused hairdressing icon Brad Ngata. “Linda and her team have honed their skills and expertise with their award competitions and gala dinners as well as bringing international talent and Australia’s best hairdressers to educate at HAIRBIZ Forum for the past ten years.” “This is a welcome event over the Queen’s Birthday weekend in June,” he continued. “A weekend the hair industry gladly gives up, to promote and network with Australian and international hair worlds sharing ideas and education. I look forward to attending the inaugural event in 2021 and who knows might even dust off the scissors and enter the AHIA! I think all the great stylists past and present should enter to show our support to the Australian Hairdressing Community. Of course, it would be great to win but more importantly shout ‘we’re back!’” The awards period usually covers one year but will be extended to all entries from March 2019 due to the restrictions and difficulties brought on by COVID-19. Entries can only be collections that have not been otherwise published, used In marketing or entered into other competitions, other than the since cancelled 2020 Hair Expo Awards. International Hairdresser of the Year and HOT SHOTS entrants are the exception to this rule, and can enter either a new collection or compilation of work from the competition period. “I am extremely excited that Mocha, with all of their years of experience in our industry with awards and publishing, have taken over the mantle from Hair Expo,” shared award-winning hairdresser Danny Pato. “They are extremely respected, and I couldn't think of anyone better to take this important platform to new heights. I'm genuinely grateful for Mocha to bring our industry together again under one roof after feeling like we'd lost our big annual get together. So, thank you, Mocha! I can't wait to go on this new journey!” An extensive and detailed judging process will anchor the competition. Round 1 will be judged by a panel of approximately

100 judges from around the world, with the panel consisting of international hairdressers, International and Australian trade media and Australian consumer media, as well as renowned PR experts and photographers. Round 2 will be adjudicated by a panel of international trade media representatives and local and global business experts. In special judging categories, Hot Shots will be judged by international and Australian hairdressers and International hairdresser of the Year will be judged by Australian hairdressers, with each of those two categories having just one round of judging. “I am very excited and happy that mocha are launching the AHIA creative awards having already run the business ones successfully for almost 10 years,” shared renowned Australian hairdressing figure Benni Tognini. “ For over 40 years, we, the Togninis family, have been involved in Hairdressing Awards and it’s time to bring new life into our Australian Creative Awards. I can’t wait to be involved in this new era! On a personal note I want to say a very big congrats to Linda and her team on taking on this adventure.” Within this historic judging panel, iconic names such as Sally Brooks, Akin Konizi, Angelo Seminara, Guy Tang, Errol Douglas and Vivienne MacKinder will be on the judging panel, next to other iconic hairdressing figures and media titles. Photographic collections are judged anonymously. For Round 1 the judging will follow a rank and preference system, while Round 2 will then add to these ranking points in the same system, deciding the winners. This system has been used successfully in ten years of AHIA (Business) judging and will carry over to the creative awards. “We are 100 per cent committed and excited for the launch of the new awards held on the Queen’s Birthday weekend, June 2021, where the industry as a whole will celebrate Creative Excellence across the entire hair industry,” said Linda Woodhead, owner of Mocha Publishing. “We have worked very hard at becoming a respected and trusted brand and understand that taking on the responsibility of running these awards is a great honour, which we do with humility, gratitude and pride. We have secured some leading brands to assist us in our mission as major sponsors and will have a few new announcements to make, as time progresses, allowing us to bring what will truly be The Greatest Show on Earth!” Operated alongside Hair Festival, which will offer hairdressers the opportunity to shop, learn, compete and connect with a dedicated marketplace, education sessions, networking Play events and more, the June long weekend once again video promises to belong to hairdressers. FAITH WILLIAMS DIRECTOR OF BLONDEE SALON, BRISBANE YOU HAVE WOKEN UP LATE, HOW DO YOU STYLE YOUR HAIR? ANY SECRET TIME-SAVING TIPS? My go-to is a low slick bun with a scrunchie. The dirtier the hair, the better. This is usually what most people are working with if they are running late. Throw on some earrings and a bright red lip, and you look like you've spent so much time on your look. DO YOU PREFER GETTING DRESSED UP OR KEEPING THINGS CASUAL WHEN IT COMES TO FASHION? I like getting dressed up, but then I want to dress it down. I'll wear a nice outfit with a pair of sneakers. It's my go-to style for most things. PICK YOUR POISON. Rosé or red wine. WHAT IS A HAIR TREND YOU'D LIKE TO STICK AROUND IN 2021? A root shadow. I don't think it will go out of fashion anytime soon. It's such a great technique as it keeps the colour low maintenance and flatters any complexion, especially if you're very blonde. WHAT IS YOUR JAM (SONG) IN THE SALON? I always like to play acoustic chill music because whenever I put anything on that is too upbeat, it would make the salon feel frantic! But apart from that, anything Harry Styles. WHAT IS A CUT OR COLOUR THAT YOU'D LOVE TO TRY BUT CAN'T BRING YOURSELF TO DO JUST YET? Every year I talk about getting a bob, but it never happens. We cut bobs for people every day, and it looks so amazing, but I am a little bit of a chicken. Who knows, this year could be the year? ONE TIP FOR STAYING FIT, MOTIVATED AND HEALTHY IN 2021? Staying fit and healthy is a non-negotiable for me, so I'd say make it a priority. Just like getting to work on time or brushing your teeth, make it something that is a part of your routine. Once you realise how good it makes you feel, it becomes addictive and you're lost without it. DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL DATE? Heading somewhere relaxed on a Sunday afternoon for a drinks and a bite to eat - like a Sunday session. I don't like going or staying out late. THE BEST ADVICE ANYONE HAS GIVEN YOU? Hire on personality, not skill. You can always teach skills, but you can't change someone's personality. I hired my staff based on their personalities, and they are the best team anyone could ask for. I love them.

TRAVIS BALCKE SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL GUEST ARTIST HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE AESTHETIC? Casual, chic and minimal. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A HAIRSTYLIST? I always found myself interested in hair creatively and absolutely love communicating with people. A combination of these two things led me to hairdressing. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE OR MOST MEMORABLE STYLING JOB OF ALL TIME? Working with John Galliano at Paris Fashion Week. PICK YOUR POISON. Red wine. DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL SUNDAY. In the morning, pancakes with the family or friends and then spending some time on the farm with my family and our horses. In the evening, I love cooking everyone a Sunday roast. WHAT IS A HAIR TREND YOU'D LIKE TO SEE STICK AROUND IN 2021? People embracing their natural movement is something that I've really enjoyed. I truly hope this sticks around because as a haircutter, this has brought attention to the importance of a brilliant haircut. IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANYONE IN THE WORLD, WHO WOULD IT BE? Jamie Tanner, one of my closest friends. She lives in England, and I would do anything to have dinner with her right now. A SONG THAT IS FOREVER ON REPEAT? This could be by Natalie Cole. YOU'VE RECENTLY JOINED THE TEAM AT CAPELLI BY KLP. WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT THE SALON WHEN ON EDITORIAL JOBS? My salon teammates at CAPELLI. We have an amazing mixture of eclectic, creative hairstylists from around the world, and I find being surrounded by these girls to be so inspiring, not only by their work but also their lifestyles. YOUR FAVOURITE INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT? @juliancookies WHEN INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL STARTS UP AGAIN, WHERE WOULD YOU GO? Dubai, in the city. A PIECE OF ADVICE TO LIVE BY IN 2021? She'll be right.

I am absolutely delighted about the choice and can’t wait to see what the future holds for us.” “My role with Goldwell includes creating signature Angelo Seminara collections, working closely with the Research & Development department as well as working with the Goldwell teams. My goal is to also develop new colour techniques and to represent Goldwell in the best way possible,” he continued. “I will be very involved in the brand product developments going forward. It’s something that I am passionate about and also extremely interested in the technology behind producing a hair product.” With two distinctly hero Goldwell products – Elumen and the ‘Fixing Effect Hairspray’ – Angelo will no doubt make hair magic in the early stages of his role. 40 INSTYLE
“Angelo’s unprecedented creative vision and dedication to pushing the boundaries of his craft will allow Goldwell to take our commitment to delivering the most revolutionary products and services to animate the imagination of every stylist to the next level,” said John Moroney, Creative Director for the Kao Salon Division. Fuelled by a curiosity, passion and obsession for both nature and hair, Angelo’s credits include runway looks for Chanel, Valentino, Hermes, Stella McCartney, Dolce & Gabbana and more, and editorial looks for Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Italian Vogue, French Vogue and The Sunday Times. He has been British Hairdresser of the Year four times and exhibited in museum exhibitions around the world. “I work really closely with an incredible fashion and exhibition curator, Judith Clark. We have been collaborating for over a decade, on various projects including, Chloé Attitudes in Paris, Frida Kahlo in Mexico, Homo Faber: Fashion Inside and Out in Venice and many more,” Angelo explained. When it comes to hair, Angelo is a
chameleon, achieving Avant Garde, high fashion, salon looks and everything in between as the artistic brief requires. “My signature style has always been to make someone look and feel incredible,” he said. “However, I do like originality, even if it’s a classic bob it needs to have a special twist on it. My style icon is Rick Owens, an American Fashion designer, who makes really cool and chic clothing. The inspiration for editorials comes from the brief itself. You have to adapt to the needs of the shoot, as they all have individual needs. Sometimes the inspiration comes on

the day or it’s well planned in advance.” Growing up in the South of Italy, Angelo’s trajectory has been one to watch and admire, starting in a local barbershop at the age of 11 and growing to the highest accolades the hair industry has to offer over a 37 year career. With his love of design and aesthetic, it’s no wonder Angelo imagines he would be an architect had life taken a different path, but with his inimitable talents instead (and fortunately) in our field, her provides a range of insights other salon members can learn from. “Be open minded, look for a mentor and ‘copy, copy, copy’ but at the end of the copy try to find your own identity. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Take your time and enjoy the way. The journey is more fun
than the destination,” he advised. “I think that in the next few years there will be a lot of change in the industry. Hair brands will have to evolve in terms of the new services we can provide. Highlights, balayage and tints are the norm at the moment, but we have to prepare the new generation with something new and exciting,” he continued. “Products will become way more sustainable and attract those who are more caring about the environment in general. This will be a massive change, which sooner or later we will all have to adapt to.” 2021 and beyond looks bright as ever for Angelo and Goldwell. For more information visit www.goldwell.com.au

AWED
THE NEW IN AWE SALON HAS DEBUTED IN ADELAIDE, BUILT FROM SALON OWNER MEGAN PANOZZO’S PASSION FOR CREATIVE COLOUR TO BECOME THE DESIGN PERSONIFICATION OF COLOUR, TEXTURE AND ARTISTRY, WRITES SHANNON GUSS.

eet In Awe Salon, which has operated since 2012, and has always been renowned for its vivid and bright persona. Its updated premises have elevated this seven salon chair space, building a bigger size bursting with pastel and bright colour palettes and paired with original tiling and materials, while maintaining the In Awe DNA that puts clients first and ensures they feel completely at home. “It’s amazing welcoming our clients in for the first time and seeing them in awe, in ‘In Awe’! I always had a vision of creating a space that felt like a dream when you walked in, and my vision for the new salon was Mid Century…just as the acid kicked in,” Megan said. “I wanted to create a space that was still a colour speciality salon with a uniquely modern interior – something that was different to anything else being created at the moment, that felt high end with a twist.” The design aesthetic was inspired by a hot pink acrylic table found on Pinterest and created in conjunction with interior designer Aislinn Morris. Feature pieces include bright blue Maletti basin chairs from Space Salon Furniture, and chairs from Joiken, as well as a hot pink vinyl splashback, floor sticker and kick boards for the walls and wavy lines decorations, all by Signarama in Melrose Park. Tiling by Travis Lamb from Lamb Bathrooms and painting creations by Ben Cunningham of Waterpark Decorators also elevated the space, with hand painted pink and green blocks above the mirrors and detailed artwork offering another artistic, 42 INSTYLE
personalised touch. The salon was created to offer a unique design and, with it, a unique client experience. “We don’t have a dedicated retail shelf. We have a display table where we create a merchandising space, allowing us to talk about home haircare and retail before we start the service,” Megan said. “I also made the choice to abandon the traditional idea of a reception desk. I am fully connected to my clients throughout their visits; we share so much and I follow a really heart-led experience for them. We ask our clients to stay in their chair at the end of their visit and use our iPads and check them out with the Timely app.” “I want to be the Uber of hairdressing,” Megan continued. “Once all of my clients are using the new payment feature in Timely they can walk out the door without even having to have money change hands.” The space was built and launched through the pandemic, speaking to Megan’s fortitude and the salon’s clear power as it trailblazers through a challenging period, emerging with its clear identity, creativity and innovations.

hd’s latest launch is here by way of max, the brand’s new solution for speed styling with impeccable results. It ushers in a year of true innovation for ghd, worthy of their 20th anniversary. max is at the forefront of that era, debuting as a professional wide plate styler, to enable seamless styling on long, thick hair in just half the time. “ghd is dedicated to listening to our stylists and consumers, developing solutions which answer their biggest styling needs with best-in-class tools,” said Ludovic Dellazzeri, managing director ghd anz. “We know time is precious, whether you’re a stylist in salon or a consumer trying to get out the door more quickly at home – and this goes for the 53 per cent of women across Australia who have long, thick, or curly hair. That’s why we’re so excited to launch a solution which will deliver flawless styling in half the time, and with no extreme heat – respecting the health and integrity of the hair.” The sleek design is anchored by the brand’s patented dual-zone technology and their widest surface ceramic floating plates yet, which deliver 80 per cent more shine and two times less frizz. This tool is ideal for Australian women, 45 per cent of whom struggle with frizzy hair in our national humid climate. The curved edges off the barrel allow for less breakage and a smooth styling experience, while the barrel shape enables users to create versatile looks. Aiding fast styling, max offers plates that are 70 per cent bigger than regular styler plates and cover much more hair in the styling process, without the need for extreme heat. The technology constantly monitors temperature to stay at an optimal 185°C across both plates. “The beauty of max is the wide plate surfaces allow you to take larger sections of hair for faster straightening and styling, while 44 INSTYLE
the dual-zone technology and floating ceramic plates ensure the hair is flawlessly styled in just one pass,” said Grant Norton, national education manager ghd anz. “The rounded barrel means hair will never catch or snag when styling, as well as giving you a lot of versatility. I love the variety of looks max can create, and knowing that it will leave the hair smoother, shinier, and healthy looking.” "The ghd max styler is a show-stopper when it comes to speed styling and efficiency. It's always my go-to when it comes to thick and long hair; one pass through the hair and your style is perfect, whether straight or creating waves,” he continued. to deliver three times less frizz amongst the diverse stylistic capabilities. “The new ghd max styler is by far the best wide plate iron I have ever used. My client’s afro textured hair was smoother than ever with only one pass and she has worn it for almost two weeks,” shared ghd creative artist Natalie Anne. “The ghd max is so user-friendly, whether you’re a professional stylist looking to speed things up in salon, or a consumer at home looking for a quick style switch up,” Grant added. “ghd max and straight on spray are the ultimate styling power couple for a sleek and polished look. Our Straight On spray also features out signature heat protection system, which provides a lightweight and invisible barrier of protection between your hair and heat – resulting in healthier looking hair.” ghd will relaunch its heat styling protection styling range, as introduced with the new debut of the Straight On Spray. The new packaging design showcases the strength of ghd’s signature heat protection system, renowned for its layer of a lightweight and invisible layer of thermal protection for the hair when heat styling. The ghd max is also supported by a 2-year professional use warranty. “Whether you’re a professional looking for an effective speed styling solution, or one of the millions of women looking to speed up their styling routine, all without compromising on the health and integrity of your hair, the ghd max with straight on spray is your perfect styling partner,” Ludovic said. MY WAY
CUT TING EDGE MARTHA KOURTIDOU,
CEO BODA Hair Boutique
What a chic look! I love the combination of the tailored blazer with the edgy boots, as well as the contrast of the navy and the pop of colour! I think this look is flawless, and wouldn't change a thing! In terms of hairstyling, this woman is so stunning. I'm a big fan of her lived-in balayage colour. It suits her edgy style, and the tone of the blonde compliments her skin. I'd love to see her rocking a super sleek straight bob or even a Hayley Bieber inspired slicked back bun! I'd start by using KEVIN.MURPHY SMOOTH.AGAIN. WASH & RINSE at the basin to manage unwanted frizz. I'd then blow-dry the hair as straight as possible after using a heat protector spray. I recommend Wella EIMI Thermal Image. I'd then use the ghd Platinum + Black Styler, sectioning the hair and flicking it inwards at the bottom for a 90s look. To finish, I'd recommend going in with a finishing oil. My current fave is FRIZZY LOGIC SHINE SERUM by Original Mineral. 50 INSTYLE

The mantra for 2021 is simple, with tools that are closer, faster, better and newer, as focused on individual hair types, specific client needs and every requirement from texture, to length and style preference. The brand’s new tools – the Silver Bullet Dynamic Duo Hair Trimmer and Clipper Set, Silver Bullet Buzz Man Fade ‘N Shave Shaver, Silver Bullet Smooth Rider Clipper, Silver Bullet Smooth Rider Clipper, Silver Bullet Excelsior Professional Clipper, Silver Bullet Hyper Speed Clipper and Silver Bullet Hyper Speed Trimmer – have a range of features for the modern barber. These include bold advancements that empower hairdressers in their skills, to the benefit of both the stylist and client. Start with the Silver Bullet Dynamic Duo Hair Trimmer and Clipper Set, a trending, man-scaping must-have, in which both tools emphasise speed, power and precision. MY WAY
FEELING PEACHY SHARLENE LEE,
Founder and Creative Director of Circles Of Hair, AHIA Australian Salon of the Year 2020
I adore seeing bright and fun colours in fashion. On the other hand, I am not a fan of oversized dresses as they don't flatter any body shape. Let's start on the sleeves! How is this practical? I could imagine what would happen to them on a dinner date. I think there could be less material in this dress as her body is stunning. The pleats make it look dated. I love her belt bag, and it would bring any outfit to life, but I am not sure if it does justice to this particular look. Her shoes are super cute and look comfortable, which is what I would go for myself. As we all know, sunglasses can make or break any outfit. I have a sunglasses fetish, and you wouldn't find these in my wardrobe. They are plain and boring. I could see her in some oversized sunglasses or something exciting. This model could suit any style, but I do love the length on her. I would create more movement in her hair as styling is crucial to making our cuts and colours stand out. Blondes are a big part of our salon’s services, and this particular colour represents what the consumer wants right now. That is, a low maintenance shade working with their natural colour so they can maintain it easily in between salon visits, but still adding loads of vibrance. A little bit of face-framing would make everything pop. When it comes to the right product, I am loving the new Kérastase Fresh Affair. Not only does it give you a clean, refreshing smell but adds movement to any style that you can brush out and restyle the next day. INSTYLE 53

TURNING ONE ONE WHOLE YEAR OF BLONDEE SALON MEANS A CONSTANTLY BUILDING EMPIRE, A NEW ADDITION TO ITS LUXE SPACE AND THE KNOWLEDGE THAT THEY CAN MAKE IT THROUGH DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES WHILE THRIVING. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BLONDEE!
B
londe specialist salon BLONDEE is enjoying a double celebration, as it marks one year of luxury, blonde focused operations and an expansion to its salon space. The Brisbane salon is adding to its space due to high client demand, emerging client needs in the current landscape and business achievement, even within the confines of a difficult year for salons. “I am so thrilled to unveil our new extended salon space today as we celebrate one year in business – and what a year is has been,” said Founder and Director of BLONDEE Faith Williams at the end of 2020. “Not long after opening BLONDEE, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and brought a number of challenges, as it did for many businesses. Thanks to all of our loyal clients and my amazing team, we have certainly come out the other side and we feel so grateful. We’re so excited for the next chapter!” BLONDEE has grown in its first year from zero to nine employees and over 400 people on a waitlist, necessitating the expansion. The salon is taking over additional space behind the salon, extending with a slightly different look due to COVID-related needs and changes in lifestyle. “When I first opened BLONDEE, I really wanted to create a boutique space that looked different to the traditional salon. Pinterest was my best friend when I was 54 INSTYLE
coming up with designs! I sought lighter neutral tones with an earthy feel to suit the theme of a blonde specialist salon."
“The salon has such a nice warm feeling when you enter with beautiful arches, earthy tones, olive tree, and oak features. I would say it has a slight Mediterranean feel to it.” FAITH WILLIAMS
“So many people have been working from home which means they are much more flexible and want to come in during work hours and continue to work from the salon whilst getting their hair done,” Faith continued about the expansion. “Let’s face it, coming to the salon takes a huge chunk of your day away from you especially in a salon like BLONDEE where we are doing detailed work with blonde hair and intricate techniques and creating such huge transformations. We have had so many clients working away with MacBooks on their laps and jumping on and off conference calls this year.” The new space accommodates these needs by acting as a private haven,
allowing clients to work, take phone calls and be comfortable the whole time. Features include new ergonomic chairs and a long oval-shaped oak table equipped with workspace needs including power points and phone charger points. The space has been extended 30 square metres, now totalling 100 square metres, offering a brighter, lighter space built from glass windows and floor to ceiling glass doors, creating a haven that clients can settle in to all day. “Some of our clients have seen bits and pieces of the salon extension along the way as we’ve been working hard to bring it to life. We’ve already had so many people asking if they can bring their chairs from the front out to the back table so they can work away whilst enjoying an epic cheese board, a wine, pink gin or their drink of choice from our delicious drinks and treats menu! So, it looks like it will really take off having this new space,” Faith said. Congratulations to BLONDEE on the new venture! For more information visit www.blondee.com.au

THE GREAT ESCAPE
ADILLA BARBERS IN DOUBLE BAY, SYDNEY, IS A LUXURIOUS, REJUVENATING PIT STOP FOR THE MODERN MAN. DISCOVER THE KEY TO STYLE AND THE ULTIMATE UNWIND IN THIS INSPIRATIONAL DESTINATION, WRITES SHANNON GUSS.
I
f you’ve stepped into a luxury Double Bay destination where’s men’s style, client comfort and the salon experience are all paramount, that means you’ve probably wandered into Adilla Barbers. The men’s space aims to offer clients a true modern escape, with a recent relaunch that ensures their guests can take some time out and leave fully rejuvenated with an all-new menu and treatments. “The inspiration came as I found myself jumping from barber to barber looking for something beyond a great haircut,” explained founder, Colm Flanagan, of the initial opening. “The opportunities for self-care for men were scarce and a luxury barbershop seemed like a good place to start. Increased stress from an accelerating career in growth marketing coupled with a decrease in my want to have a night out left me with few options for an experience I enjoyed. I wasn’t totally comfortable in salons although I had tried a few. Something in between was what I was looking for.” “An idea was born. What if we could combine the look, feel and quality of a classic barbershop with the beauty services and experience of a salon to ultimately create a space where men can feel confident enough to truly relax? Why does having a haircut have to be a chore or a task, why can’t it be considered a luxury escape?” Colm asked. The salon opened its doors three years ago and more recently prides itself on the Adilla Escape service. That is, a hair cut, including shampoo and scalp massage, a full straight razor shave or beard shape and line up, styled with V76 or American Crew products, and then a hot towel facial and moisturiser with the assistance of a professional, beauty-grade steamer. “When we opened, we knew we were ahead of the curve in creating a destination for men, so we spent a lot of time educating the market around us. The goal here was to incorporate facials, treatments, skin care and products into our services whilst taking the time to explain the benefits,” Colm said. “We didn’t want a novelty shop, so our designer’s brief was to come up with something that is modern, relaxing and inviting.” Despite the difficulties of 2020, the business has managed to acquire 60 new clients per month on average with the average client spend increasing significantly as clients increasingly continued to select luxe packages, with some men in the chair for up to 90 minutes. With that elevation, the relaunched menu was born, and the Adilla Escape has aided profits both in the salon and on the shelf. “No major travel, home-schooling and working from home are just some of the things pushing people to feeling trapped, so during COVID we ramped up our knowledge on skin care to create 56 INSTYLE
the Adilla Escape, the combined professional hair and skin service giving our clients an opportunity to escape, if even for just an hour. The feedback has been so positive it helped us drive and keep focused during the rough spots in 2020,” Colm shared. “Our retail sales have increased by 20 per cent YOY (year on year), as clients want to recreate this feeling at home. We have always had skin care products in the shop, however offering these more beauty focused services and with many clients now upgrading to our deluxe and escape packages, our skincare retail has increased noticeably,” he continued. In its design, Adilla Barbers offers sophisticated architecture with supreme attention to detail. The salon is filled with internationally trained barbers for top-tier services, paired with a beer or whisky for the ultimate haven in a modern environment. “We take pride in our culture and our approach to internal education. We shut our shops every six to eight weeks and have a complete team day,” Colm said. “The goal here is to share knowledge, feedback and to help each other improve in every aspect of our client service. It’s easy to lose focus or get complacent! As founders, we work for our team, our job is to listen and ensure they are happy, learning, improving and in a position to give our clients a memorable experience every time they visit us.” An essential space for the modern man, Adilla Barbers is luxury, style and class personified. BYE-BYE COLOUR KICK COLOUR TO THE CURB WITH MALIBU C’S COLOUR CORRECTORS.
M
alibu C’s Colour Correctors make changing your client’s colour feel seamless when compared with traditional methods, and it’s adding two new exciting additions into the mix to make things even simpler. First up, meet Malibu C’s new Colour Disruptor; the beginning step of any colour correction. This product does exactly what it says on the bottle. Colour Disruptor disrupts and loosens stubborn dye molecules to facilitate easier removal without compromising the hair's integrity. It's vegan, cruelty-free and non-oxidative formula gives a move on order to both oxidative and direct dyes thanks to its dual disruptor technology. Oil-based colours, direct dyes and even henna are no match for Malibu C Colour Disruptor. The consistency is creamy, and application is easy. Simply work into the hair using 1.5 – 2 cm sections, apply a professional processing cap and expose to heat for 20 – 30 minutes. Rinse with shampoo and then apply colour remover for incredible results. It's recommended for all colour services. Next up, meet Malibu C De-Ox; a clever backbar companion designed to normalise hair's porosity and pH. Hair can continue to process for up to 48 hours after colouring, toning or lightening, and De-Ox helps to stop this in its tracks. It's designed to prevent this oxidative action, so your client's colour will look the same at home as it did in the salon. This innovation is also backed by Malibu C's 35-year commitment to sharing education about oxidation management.
“All Malibu C colour treatment remedies are straightforward, fast and inexpensive vegan, water-activated formulas.” Apply De-Ox at the backbar after colouring or lightening. The treatment only takes 60 seconds to activate and stop the oxidation of chemical services. A little goes a long way too, with 12 sachets of De-Ox equating to almost 3 litres of the product once mixed with water.
MEET THE TEAM These two launches join Malibu C's comprehensive range of colour correctors available to Australian and New Zealand hairdressers. Together the team of six tools offer a solution for every colour catastrophe. All Malibu C’s crystalised ingredients are 100 per cent vegan and hermetically sealed so they can be water activated on the spot, giving you absolute freshness and megapotency with every treatment. Quick Fix is ideal if you have over-toned darker or brassier than intended. Simply add water to activate and fix any mistakes right at the basin. Direct Dye Lifter helps to remove any unwanted direct dyes or stains without peroxide.
If you are looking to remove oxidative colour up to three levels while leaving natural pigment unharmed, Colour Pigment Remover is your go-to. The antioxidant vitamin complex removes metallic minerals, allowing you to colour the same day. Finally, if you're doing a client's hair for the first time and don't know what surprises you might uncover, use Malibu C's MakeOver Treatment. The Crystal Gel and Miracle Repair duo launched Malibu C as the vegan colour specialists. Apply MakeOver before any in-salon service and let your clients fall in love with the radiant and consistent colour results. It provides you with the perfect canvas so you can create a masterpiece. All Malibu C colour treatment remedies are straightforward, fast and inexpensive vegan, water-activated formulas. Turn colour correction into a foolproof 45-minute breeze with Malibu C. LIMITLESS THOSE OF US WHO HAVE SEEN THAT MOVIE LIMITLESS ARE LYING IF WE HADN’T WISHED WE COULD PUSH OUR BODIES TO THOSE KIND OF MIND BLOWING LIMITS THAT BRADLEY COOPER DID WITH SUCH CHIVALRY. IT’S NOW OUR TURN TO DISCOVER MORE ABOUT HEALIXIR LIMITLESS NAD+ – A NEW LEVEL OF WELLNESS IN A BOTTLE FOR A MORE LIMITLESS LIFE, WRITES CAMERON PINE.
F
ast forward to 2021 and the movie that made headlines in 2011 may not be as far-flung and fantasy-filled as we once imagined. Way back then, well all of 10 years ago might not seem like a long time, but that’s a hell of a lot of time without the help of a supplement like Healixir to get you through both mentally and physically. You see, we often default to the word supplement, but truthfully Healixir is different, it basically mimics a biochemical process in the body that slows down as we age. But even then, the idea behind the movie definitely resonated with me as a writer who is constantly affected by the inability to shut out all distractions and purely focus in a world where being thrown off course is a commodity in itself; as easy as it once was. It really does feel like sometimes we only use 20 per cent of our brain, and according to the experts at Healixir apparently we do. So let’s take a look at this magic little pill that can make us better in everything we do. Who doesn’t want to be the perfect version of themselves? If we can re-engineer our cells to be more efficient why wouldn’t we. From the minute we wake up and do all the things we want to do, and those that we also don’t of course, our daily practice and they energy we consume and produce in the process has more effect on our long term goals than we often like to admit, and while Healixir can in summary be pitched as, ‘the new good morning, after a big night out’’, it’s so much more than that. It makes us look good, live a larger life and feel great in the process. So what exactly is in the Healixir and what active ingredient in such a tiny pill can have such an effect on our body and our ability to repair and build energy? And if 90 per cent of our energy can come from the biochemical processes in our bodies cells – what can we do to make sure our cell turnover is at its optimum? In short, the cells in the body take the glucose from the food we consume as you metabolise and digest it. Most of these power plants need a specific coenzyme to produce what is required and without this process they cannot function. NAD+ is that crucial coenzyme your power plants need to produce and maintain energy levels. When you have a NAD+ deficiency you will lack metabolic energy at a cellular level to fuel your cells and keep you in good health – think of it as a little investment into the future as well as now. NAD+ is responsible for facilitating two major functions within
62 INSTYLE
our bodies. It is essential for producing Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) which is the energy currency of each cell. Along with the activation of ‘Sirtuins’, a family of seven proteins that play a vital role in biological processes such as: muscle gain, weightloss, endurance and metabolism – areas that a lot of us struggle with daily. No matter what we eat or how we exercise if our cells aren’t working at their optimum our results will only be ghalf-arsed. It’s proven that if you want to remain youthful and live a long and healthy life, you will need a good level of NAD+ regularly, and we just don’t produce enough of it as we age. Those of us in creative or service fields of work are often on our feet a lot, snacking intermittently, lacking the time and energy for proper exercise and rest and therefore the balance of our system is constantly under attack, welcome to the modern lifestyle. There are pills that promise to burn more fat and supplements that promise improved results in isolated areas, but there’s not really one tablet that is a universal blanket to optimal cell function like Healixir.
SO WHAT EXACTLY IS NAD+ AND HOW DOES IT SUPERCHARGE OUR CELLS? Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD) is a compound of chemical nature which is found in every single cell in our bodies. It is derived from Nicotinamide Riboside. It's levels in the body
INBUSINESS NAD+ IMMUNE HEALTH
determine the speed of the aging process and everything we do on a daily basis speeds up or slows down the ageing process – NAD helps slow it down. Creams, treatments, injectables – all work on the physical symptoms but what if we can work on the cause of symptoms before they even happe? So ultimately is this a wonder pill and is perhaps almost what the beauty industry doesn’t want us to know. In this current lifestyle we often push ourselves to the max – between work, exercise, socialising, drinking, family, quality time with a partner – we don’t really look after ourselves the way we should if we are living a balanced life. When I mean balanced I’m taking about living a little too – not just on a strict diet and exercise program so the gram looks good – I’m talking about eating well mostly but also enjoying the finer things in life- that’s called balance and too many of have come to believe we can’t have it and have to make huge sacrifices to be healthy – in most cases we do, but what if we could supplement our bodies cells in a way that we build resilience and immunity beyond the norm? This is also where Healixir comes in. Ways to naturally boost NAD levels are found less and less in a modern lifestyle and diet – chugging a glass of milk every day is a fast and natural way to increase NAD. It’s full of Nicotinamide Riboside (NR), another NAD precursor, giving your body more of the raw materials it needs to produce NAD – but not many of us consumer regular milk these days. In fact more than half buy coffee with some form of other milk as we push more towards plant based diets, so technically we need Healixir more than ever. “We worked for years on developing this product and how to produce a stable delivery system for NAD+. We weren’t going to stand behind something that didn’t really work – there are so many supplements out there but we needed to do this right, with substantiated evidence behind the benefits of NAD+. Nobody else has shelf stable NAD that can be delivered and not be broken down by the stomach first,” said Healixir co-founder Melissa Trovato. As we get older, our NAD levels naturally decline, which is linked with various health problems. Research suggests that in our 20s, NAD+ levels in our brain tissue start to drop, we develop muscle loss and fatigue and we risk chronic disease development. We also hear a lot about oxidative stress – it’s a big cause of cell damage in the body and one thing we help to reduce when our NAD+ supplement is firing our cells to optimum levels. With Healixir and that gym membership you’ll notice greater weight loss than ever before, an increase in the metabolism, increased endurance and stamina levels, more regulated circadian rhythm – the sleep drug that regulates our sleep patterns. A modern lifestyle, late nights and travel messes with this the most. Let’s not even start with how much I wish I knew about this years ago amongst a beyond hectic travel schedule. If you’re like me and really haven’t done much to help slow your body’s ageing process, now is the time to double up on your NAD+ - combined with other good lifestyle choices and Bradley Cooper may just be your next wingman. Inflammation is another one that heavily effects many of us – from muscles and joints, to things like inflammatory bowel disease and general body inflammation – it’s not a good thing over a long period. We all need our heart to work better to ensure not only our moods are at their best but our focus and clarity is at an all -time high.
Building a stronger immunity is a constant process that requires our cells to be functioning and most importantly a balanced lifestyle of diet and exercise is the biggest influence here, but in order to build immunity at a level that sets you at a greater resistance to disease, the heal name in Healixir in fact couldn’t be more true. NAD+ is a crucial coenzyme for various metabolic reactions in all living cells. NAD+ availability to the body is essential for cell energy production, survival, proliferation, immunity function and health. Nad+ protects us against autoimmune disease by supporting the immune response by turning “destructive” cells into “protective” cells. Many auto immune diseases is often the difficult to control immune response whereby cells are not functioning as they should, increasing the risk of long-term disease and other diseases. With NAD+ being essential for a distressed immune system, there has never been a more important time to invest in NAD+ support. A long-time user of Healixir Casey Burges says, she notices a huge difference in her energy levels when she stops taking it daily. “On Healixir my skin glows more, I sleep better and I don’t get hangovers when I drink. It really is wellbeing in a bottle,” Casey said.
NAD+ AND ANTI-AGING Scientists are discovering everyday more new ways in which NAD+ facilitates healthy longevity and quality of life. NAD+ levels will decline as we age, creating an energy deficiency that decreases the body’s ability to retain youthful and optimal cellular function. This is where we can see age in the face and not just through the physical symptoms it has on the body. Declining NAD+, means a typical person by age 50 may have only half the NAD+ they did in their youth. By age 80, NAD+ levels decline to only 1 per cent – 10 per cent expressed in our youth. When NAD+ declines it predisposes us to accelerated aging and impacts our ability to live a quality life. As a co-factor in the cell energy process, NAD+ plays a critical role in regulating the aging processes. Found in virtually all living cells, NAD+ is essential to sustaining life. While a decline in NAD+ levels may negatively influence a person’s lifespan, restoring the body's NAD+ is increasingly being viewed as a cutting-edge tool to promote longevity. That movie Death Becomes Her released back in 1992 with Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn in a youth obsessed Beverly Hills, may resonate a little more with NAD+ than we think. Perhaps that magic potion they drank to retain a youthful appearance and muscle generation was in fact supposed to be NAD+ all along?!
WHY CHOOSE HEALIXIR? Healixir is the only product on the market offering 100 per cent pure pharmaceutical grade, LimitlessNAD+ deliversing to you twenty first century wellness in a capsule. A clinically formulated supplement containing 100 per cent pure pharmaceutical grade NAD+ encased in an enteric-coated capsule. Engineered to bypass the digestive system and designed to be released in the small intestine for higher absorption into the body. As it is pharmaceutical grade it is of the highest production quality available in the world. So next time you look in the mirror, try to look deeper into your cells – ask them what they want, are they happy? Are you respecting the process they need to regenerate, providing the environment they need to thrive? It’s most likely under the make up or morning grooming session, that we realise we aren’t doing the hardest workers in our body the favours we should be. Think of it like a canvas, if your canvas isn’t good as a base then neither will your artwork – that’s the essence of Healixir.

GIVE YOURSELF AN INSTA MAKEOVER THE START OF A NEW YEAR IS A GREAT CHANCE TO WIPE THE COBWEBS OFF OLD PROCESSES, CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER FROM DRAWERS AND FORGOTTEN BOXES, AND GIVE YOURSELF A CLEAN SLATE TO GET STUFF DONE. AT SOCIAL SORTED, WE THINK IT’S ALSO A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE YOUR INSTAGRAM A MAKEOVER AND MAKE SURE IT’S WORKING FOR YOU AS BEST IT CAN, WRITES CLEA HARBISON.
A
n Instagram makeover is designed to make sure your page is as engaging as possible, whilst also keeping things exciting for your followers, and most of all help to convert lurking followers into clients. Let’s begin the makeover!
1. REVIEW YOUR PROFILE Your Instagram profile section is the one place where you can say who you are, that you offer, and why you’re worth a follow. It’s the first thing people see when they click on your profile, so make sure your messaging is on point. TIP: To edit any of the following fields please find them under ‘Edit Profile’: Now, let’s go through the components of your profile and give them a bit of a shine…
PROFILE PICTURE Let’s start with your profile picture! If you’re a business we’d highly recommend you use the logo of your business or a shortened version of your logo (i.e. the symbol). When you use your brand’s logo it helps longterm brand recognition and immediately introduces followers to your logo and branding. On the other hand, if you’re a soleproprietor, there’s no escaping the fact that you’re the face of the brand so we’d

suggest you use a clear headshot of yourself, so customers can easily recognise you on socials. The minimum profile picture size for Instagram is 110 x 110 pixels. To ensure your logo retains high quality on the desktop version of Instagram we recommend making your profile photo size 180 x 180 pixels. Allow enough room around your logo as it will be cropped into a circle.
NAME The ‘Name’ and ‘Username’ of your Instagram are the only fields that are included in the Instagram search. The best practice is to have your username as your business name, then either use the same in the name field or an abbreviated version. You can also use a search term in the ‘Name’ field that might help people discover you, like ‘Brisbane’s best hairdresser’ or ‘London balayage specialist’. This is an amazing way to increase the reach of your account - by adding in common search terms, you are guaranteeing your profile will pop up as a result - and giving yourself a little credit it where it's due, too. Don't be shy! It's time to toot your horn a little.
CATEGORY If you have a business account you can show a category on your profile that sits
under your name. There are numerous categories to choose from like ‘Hair Salon’, ‘Beauty Salon’ or even ‘Beauty, Cosmetic & Personal Care’. Choose a category that best describes what you do. Categories are great as you can tell people about your business without repeating it in your bio (meaning you save character space for more exciting things!). To add a Category to your profile: 1. Tap on ‘Edit Profile’ from your Instagram profile. 2. Under ‘Public business information’ tap on ‘Category’ 3. Find your category via the search and select your desired category

INBUSINESS does your salon offer and how do you differ from others? Why should someone consider your salon, what are you known for?” Step into the shoes of your ideal customer and think about what would make them book or follow you after reading your bio. Expert tips to crafting the perfect bio: • Channel your brand’s personality! Do you consider your brand to be quirky, fun, rock’n’roll, high end? Inject words into your bio that oozes your brand’s personality. • Outline your specialty or offerings. Are you the best in the biz for styling, coloring, or beauty treatments? Make it clear what exactly your salon specializes in. • S how off your accolades. Won an impressive award in the industry? Add an achievement title to your bio to verify the gorgeous work you do. • Add a hashtag! Including your salon’s hashtag (i.e. #SocialSorted) is a simple way to link to all your tagged content. If a user clicks on the hashtag they will see all your beautiful work reposted from other customers. There’s nothing better than social proof! • Have fun with emojis. Add a few emojis to your bio to give your followers a taste of your brand’s personality. Emojis can also be used like shorthand – for example, use the Location Pin emoji in front of your address or city. Email or envelope emoji can signal that the following email is a way to get in touch. Get creative! Just don’t go overboard – we know how easy it can be!

WEBSITE
Your story highlights operate like a virtual FAQ or salon menu for followers to check out past work and delve deeper into what you have to offer them. On top of that, lurking users can look through all your previous client stories to see if you’re right for them. TIP: Not set up with highlights yet? We can help! To create a story highlight, a story must have been previously posted to your stories. To add a story to a highlight: 1. Tap or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile. 2. Tap + If you don't see + tap Story Highlights. 3. Tap to select the story or stories you want to add to highlights, then tap Next. 4. Choose a cover photo and enter a story name for your highlight, then tap Add (iPhone) or Done (Android). You can add more photos or videos to your highlight at any time by tapping and holding on the highlight and then tapping Edit Highlight. Story highlight ideas to add to your page:
This is the only place on your profile where you can insert a clickable link, so make sure you have your website link here or your online booking URL to make it easy for your customers to find out more or book an appointment.
CONTACT INFORMATION Instagram allows you to set up contact buttons on your profile where people can call, email and even get directions to you. Add line breaks to break up the text. Chunky text in a bio can be hard to read so use line breaks in your bio to break up the text so it’s simpler to digest. Also use relevant emojis as a dot point for each line to make your bio even more impactful. TIP: To design a bio with line breaks, use the Notes app on your mobile and space out your text the way you want it to look then copy and paste into your bio field. Include a compelling call to action (CTA) At the end of the day, you want your followers to book or find out more information about your services. Craft a simple call to action that tells them what to do, CTA’s like ‘Book Online ’ or ‘Check out our services ’ or ‘Shop Now ’. Introduce an impressive grid layout! When you look at your feed does it look organized or chaotic? A cohesive Instagram grid can make your page look and feel so professional. That’s why we recommend you stick to a grid layout to impress your followers. We’ve created some beautiful layout templates that work fabulously for the hair and beauty industry. Feel free to pick one and mimic on your own account.
#1 ORGANIC The organic layout is achieved when a recurring image (e.g. colour, quote or subject) is posted every 5th photo. The 5th image works well to break up the feed but still maintains a level of consistency.
#2 CHECKERBOARD The checkerboard layout is perfect if you’re striving for a clean and organised look. Achieve this by posting two themes (usually photographs and quotes) in alternating order.
The vertical line layout is quite unique and bold, by using the middle feed to stand out. You can achieve this by posting a specific image every 3rd photo, e.g. a quote with the same colour background.
#4 ROW BY ROW The row by row theme allows you to tell a story. This works effectively as your eyes scan each row from left to right just like you would in a magazine. To achieve this look post 3 similar photos in a row.
#5 DIAGONAL The diagonal line layout features similar objects or aesthetics in diagonal lines. To create the diagonal Instagram grid layout post a similar photo (i.e. a quote) every fourth post.
#6 RAINBOW If you’re obsessed with colour, you’ll love this one! The strategy behind the rainbow layout is to post 3 images in a row that are similar in colour.similar photo (i.e. a quote) every fourth post.

efore we get into it, make sure you have an idea of where your clients are most likely to hear about your business, how much money you have, and most importantly, how much time and resource you’re able to commit to your marketing. Also remember to be realistic. It’s best to work within a budget you’re comfortable with and not spread your resources too thin. You want to be able to complete everything to a high standard and can only achieve this by prioritising a handful of channels. Get more bang for your buck!
SOCIAL MEDIA Social media is a great way to express your brand personality and interact with your clients. It can require a high investment of time, but is particularly low cost! Content creation takes consistent effort, and you need to ensure you’re responding to comments and messages in a timely manner. However, there are a bunch of free scheduling apps that can make it easier to plan your posts ahead of time so you don’t have to do it every day! It’s also awesome for engagement, as it allows clients to easily and regularly interact with you, and vice versa.
EMAIL AND SMS MARKETING This is another low cost option that’s easy to plan ahead of time or automate entirely. Like social media, the right software makes email and SMS marketing super easy to set up. When it comes to this channel you can send your clients monthly newsletters, emails to update them on what’s new, or even automate messages like appointment reminders, aftercare tips or a reminder to purchase more of their products.
PRINT AND RADIO If you’re short on time but have some spare cash, this could be the option for you! However, an important thing to consider is your clients –will they be tuning into the radio or reading magazines? It’s best to get in touch with your local radio stations or magazines of choice to talk about your budget and what you’re trying to achieve so they can come up with an advertising schedule and help you

make this a reality. Beyond social it’s also important to have a targeted approach to marketing.
CONTENT MARKETING AND SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION (SEO) If you have the time or skills in your team to write blogs for your website or create videos for YouTube, then content marketing is a great way to increase the visibility of your website in relevant Google search results and can also be shared on social media. It’s also an opportunity to show off the knowledge you and your staff have in your areas of expertise. A win-win!
DIGITAL ADVERTISING Step up your visibility online with digital ads! They can take a little time to get the hang of, or you may need help from an expert, but you can get very specific with who sees your ad, right down to their age, location, gender and interests. Google, Facebook and Instagram all offer a range of different options that allow you to spend as much or as little as you like.
EVENTS, SPONSORSHIPS AND PUBLIC RELATIONS Building your presence in your community helps spread positive word of mouth and brand awareness. The cost varies depending on how much you’re willing to give, so it’s an easy thing to dabble in to see how you find the response from your local community. You could sponsor events, attend expos, donate to raffles, prizes and giveaways, enter competitions, or anything else you come across in print, digital and on air channels. Now you have a better idea of what all the channels can provide for your business, it’s time to start planning! Always think about what’s going to effectively reach your target audience, and what’s going to most accurately communicate your brand and the value of your business. Talking to the clients you have and finding out where they engage with brands is also great research.

ld habits die hard..and when it comes to moving forward, cutting old habits is as important as setting new goals. The biggest growth comes when we least expect it. It’s safe to say education in the last 12 months has looked completely different to yesteryear. Back in 2018 and 2019 in our bumper education supplements we talked about the mix of digital and physical education giving birth to a new word – ‘phygital’ and how to harmonise the finite importance of both in our monthly calendars. Like many things, 2020 threw balance out the window and we all needed to adapt – if we wanted to engage with any education at all, in most cases we had to embrace the ever-increasing suite of online resources available to us. For some it may have seemed like a bit of a vacation year, but for others their job got a whole lot harder, shifting systems and procedures and re-calibrating an online heavy education portfolio was embraced by most brands wanting to help support their clients through a difficult time. While online education is great, it’s important to set clear rules of interaction as well as set the stage for successful take aways – where interaction my lack, messages can easily be misconstrued or diluted for all involved, and with limited feedback, we all need to rethink assessment. A lot of how well we learn is based on our attitude and not our skill and its crucial now more than ever before we lift each other up out of the doldrums of our somewhat restricted routines and support each other. Not only encourage involvement, but eliminate the tall poppy syndrome Australia is wellknown for, while eliminating the ego in what we do – because every time someone acts through ego they limit their ability to grow and improve the lives of others. Have you heard of the word netiquette? Netiquette is as I’m sure you guessed, is just like etiquette in real live scenarios but for online education. The rules for online learning and classroom learning are virtually the same: You have to be engaged, take notes, attend classes and participate in discussions if applicable In the classroom, your words, gestures, posture and facial expressions communicate your thoughts and observations to your peers and teachers and online the same rules are important, especially if people can see you via video as well. After the fact, netiquette is also important to how you pass on your feedback and communicate following the class – when not in a live situation it’s important to put in a bit of extra effort online, even if it’s just by sending a nice message after the class to the talent or administrators telling them what you took away. This feedback goes a long way and ensures our next online interaction is even better than before. I’d like to thank the companies that are still putting time into both platforms, despite the uncertainty – we all know hairdressers are craving that face to face interaction as much as they benefit from the regular online bites. Education is the only way we can truly see what others are doing to make a difference, and where we need to improve ourselves. Education is the real stuff beyond the highlight real and the calculated Instagram post that we see. It’s beneath the metrics of vanity and ego where we find the true meaning of what we enjoy. Yes, sharing education online is important, so is following accounts and educators that inspire you, but nothing is ever as important as spending time around the energies you love. Congratulations and thank you to the companies that have continued to make us accountable for who we need to show up us in 2020 and 2021 and beyond. It’s what we must plan ahead for that will get us through and the only way we will overcome our fears. We can’t wait to see you face to face at hairfestival.com.au 2021! Make sure you register.
