MEN LOVE THEIR hair and themselves more than you think. I am not talking about testosterone charged ego or cocky arrogance but moreso confidence and the life wins that stem from that. Confidence for guys is a topic that isn’t discussed as much as it is for women – men will most-likely suffer in silence rather than talk about their concerns like women do so freely. It’s complicated for guys these days – the male stereotype is a blurred phenomenon and a more gender fluid approach has made it’s way into the men’s dressing and grooming room. The ‘Aussie bloke’ while it has often been the most uncomplicated and unsophisticated in the global male culture stakes has too become an international fusion of trends and styles and in the most part, endlessly underpinned by our coastal and outdoor lifestyles. Just like women are empowered to be unique and speak their own sense of style in everything they do, it has become the same for the guys - being who you want to be without being boxed in while following numerous sub-stereotypes is the reality, yet for the most part, confidence is key. A good head of hair and sense of style don’t just increase a man’s success in the boardroom – that ideology has sailed along with the traditional career path. For men, hair is more important than make up is for women – it’s the unspoken security of lipstick and you only get one chance at it. Sydney’s leading men’s hair transplant clinic – Knudsen clinic in Double Bay recently brought to my attention an article in the UK Mirror; titled, ‘Balding Man’s Tinder matches increase by 75 per cent after hair transplant’ – this was a sobering reality and an interesting insight into how we perceive hair. Richard King, 31 posted two simultaneous profiles with different pictures to see exactly what a difference his hair would make – his balding profile was seen as lackluster, no fun and old – perhaps they assumed he wasn’t healthy and/or fertile? A thick head of hair means everything to a man. With such a significant strike rate with Richard's fine follicles profile picture it’s no wonder men place so much importance their hair. With the freedom to wear longer hair or not be afraid of the fade – hairstyles have transformed men as we know them. It’s okay to use products and it’s okay to talk about it. If attracting a partner is on your agenda as well as feeling confident, it’s safe to say that hair and grooming are a big business, and it grows every year. So much so, we’ve again dedicated this mini-mag to the business of men. From salons, barber shops, style and inspiration it’s everything you need to master the man and everything they want to master personally. Almost doubling in size since 2012 and worth 21.4 billion US dollars, it’s time to man up!

MEN’S BARBERS
MANSPACES WHO: Jon Miller WHAT: HQ Male Grooming WHERE: 87 Boundary street West End, Queensland SIGNATURE: A full service barber shop for the style conscious male, HQ Male Grooming promises gents will leave a lot more confident. Their expertise allows a gents individual needs to be met, with a side of advice on the latest styles to suit hair type, image and lifestyle. STYLE: HQ prides itself on being the perfect antidote to the stress of everyday life. A juxtaposition of retro chic and bold modernism, themed walls are adorned with posters of some of the greatest music icons of the 21st century while some of their greatest hits play in the background. SERVICES: With a clientele so diverse, HQ always aims to cater to the individual - a typical appointment consists of a full consultation, shampoo, condition, head massage, hot towel, cut, style and advice on the best products to achieve the desired look at home. “We pride ourselves on being ‘the home of great hair’ and that’s what keeps our customers coming back,” Jon said. www.hqmalegrooming.com.au
WHO: Dan Dixon WHAT: Mister Chop Shop WHERE: 360 Oxford St Bondi Junction. SIGNATURE: Dan, a 25 year veteran of the industry, started his Chop Shop Empire 10 years ago and still operates a unisex version, Bondi Beach Chop Shop. This new men’s only venture sees the demand being met for a polished, sophisticated yet masculine service for the quintessentially Australian man. Mister Chop Shop’s concept is based on a fusion of high fashion hairdressing techniques and the barber skills of yesteryear. Every service commences with a detailed consultation, shampoo, scalp condition and style with a focus on products and techniques used to help educate gents on how to create his newly chiseled look at home. STYLE: Mister Chop Shop was designed to relax and inspire every man who enters. A mixture of aged timbers and industrial piped shelving complement a striking zincwrapped front desk that houses the prized piece of the salon - a fully stocked glass front beer fridge. Each month the Scotch and Bourbon choices change too! SERVICES: Kept simple, Mister Chop Shop’s service list covers seven main services, starting with the obvious classic haircut and shampoo, “We don’t do any dry cutting considering the amount of products used in services today. From a basic cut to a hot towel shave, we offer everything,” Dan said. Every service is timed to 45 minutes, similar to a regular hairdressing experience to ensure quality is maintained. We're not a production line barber,” Dan said. www.misterchopshop.com.au 4 - INST Y L E M EN
MEN’S BARBERS WHO: Kylie Hayden WHAT: Face of Man WHERE: 300 George Street Sydney SIGNATURE: Originally opening in 1978 and housed in the iconic Strand Arcade, Face of Man was Australia’s first ever men’s grooming lounge. Now with seven treatment rooms, the décor is luxe and exclusive – akin to a men’s cigar lounge of yesteryear. With the latest on offer it’s hard to imagine this gem is 40 years old. STYLE: Somewhat monochromatic and lit like a luxury bar, Face of Man is centred around a relaxing lounge space, the discerning male will feel right at home – suit or no suit, the space appeals to the modern man. With a nostalgic aura inspired by a 1930 men’s cigar lounge, it’s the ideal space for 30 minutes or three hours. SERVICES: “Our treatment menu varies from traditional treatments like waxing and massage up to more advanced services like laser, fraxel and peels,” Kylie said. “We are also the ultimate destination for routine grooming and fragrances needs, with a recently built shaving shop stocked with shaving creams and brushes from all over the world,” she said. www.faceofman.com.au
WHO: Kate Allen WHAT: One for Men WHERE: 17 McKillop street, Melbourne, VIC SIGNATURE: Formerly Man What a Fuss, Kate Allen pioneered the men’s grooming market by opening the dedicated man space in 1998. Kate began to educate the Melbourne man on how to look after his skin, have the best hair and manage his stress levels. The focus is still on haircuts with more of a swing towards hair loss, anti-ageing and aesthetic treatments for the face and body. Despite changing to meet the latest innovations and demands for men, this doesn’t change the fact that this well known space provides a multitude of men’s opportunities, whether it be just to pop in for a haircut, a relaxing experience or a full service spa experience upstairs. STYLE: Minimal and masculine, the space functions just like a multi-level salon space with exclusive masculine accents you’ll only see at One for Man. Exposed beam ceilings and polished wooden floors – the look is classic and simple. SERVICES: “We pride ourselves on being able to provide a total consultation from top to toe, recommending tailored treatment packages and services for each individual. Our clients are very loyal, some coming since we opened eight years ago,” Kate said. The top three signature treatments include the perfect man hair cut, the ears, nose and brow wax and mini facial and the Relaxation Massage with Vichy shower. oneformen.com.au

MEN’S BARBERS WHO: Ben Kane and Maurice Torcasio WHAT: Rokk Man Barbers WHERE: Two locations; Collins street Melbourne CBD and Toorak SIGNATURE: With well-known men’s barber Ben ‘Sugar’ Kane, recently going into partnership with the man behind the highly successful Rokk Ebony Group, Rokk Man is every bit the leading barbershop and more. “Every client can relax in a tailored 5 star service from arrival to departure in a traditional American gentlemen’s club atmosphere,” Co-owner and Manager, Ben ‘Sugar’ Kane said. “The solidity and masculinity of Rokk Man provides a genuine retreat for men who leave feeling like they’ve escaped for hours, even if it’s only been a 30 minute appointment. STYLE: Managing Director, Maurice Torcasio said that they decided to open the second Rokk Man Barbers to provide a luxury, flagship barbershop for men in Toorak Village area. “Our Collins Place barbershop grew so rapidly that we had to advertise far and wide for barbers to join the team,” Maurice said. “Th is led us to create a nationally and internationally experienced team for both locations,” Maurice said. Traditional green hooded lamps and a dark colour palette epitomize the no-fuss aura of this quintessential barber shop. SERVICES: The attentive service is capped off with the offering of a complimentary boutique beer, scotch, rum or gin on arrival. “We spend time getting to know our clients well so that we provide barbering that suits them in every aspect,” Ben said. “Haircuts are designed based on each client’s face shape, hair type, personality and lifestyle.” www.rokkmanbarbers.com.au
WHO: Josh Mihan WHAT: The Bearded Man WHERE: 203 Chapel street, Prahran, VIC SIGNATURE: With award-winning coffee, courtesy of industry beans on offer and Melbourne’s most chill beats setting the scene, The Bearded Man stands apart from the full on barbershop fad as a low-pressure, comfortable environment. “What we are trying to do is think outside of the typical ‘retro’ barbers that can be intimidating for someone that doesn’t have that particular style. We cater for all men and even some of the ladies if they are into what we are about,” Josh said. STYLE: A world away from the macho biker or barber feel – modern concrete floors, exposed copper piping, uncomplex lines of crafted American Oak and simple greenery provide an organic and intuitive décor. SERVICES: From tradesmen to travelers to architects and models, The Bearded Man welcomes clients from all walks of life. “Beard trims are our thing but most of our clients don’t have beards so they take advantage of our cuts, trims and shaves. www.beardedman.com.au/ 6 - INST Y L E M EN

MEN’S BARBERS WHO: Mikey Enright WHAT: The Barber Shop WHERE: 89 York St, Sydney SIGNATURE: The space is as notable for hairdressing as it is for hospitality, with bar and barbershop fused seamlessly together. Equipped with a soundtrack that jumps from reggae to hip hop, the Barbershop is a trendy hang out as much as it’s a flourishing salon. “My ideal client comes in half an hour before they’re booked in for their service, they sit there, they have a drink, do some work, play a record, chill out and enjoy the experience,” Mikey shared. “Clients can just sit there and feel like they’ve been somewhere different.” STYLE: Aesthetic references to hunting, motor vehicles and vintage sports constitute Mikey’s interest list, and comprise the bulk of The Barber Shop’s walls, a considered mix of old and new, vintage and contemporary. Think old cricket bats, badminton racquets and golf clubs, posters of the 1930 Melbourne Grand Prix and motorbike warehouses, a James Corbett original sculpture made from motor parts, 20th century barber chairs and an 1820s shotgun. SERVICES: Like the space itself, the services that combine liquor and barbering stand out. These package services include a consultation, haircut, hot towel shave and gin or whiskey-based cocktail. ‘The Balvenie Experience’ is a particular favourite. www.thisisthebarbershop .com

MEN’S BARBERS
WATERING HOLE This new establishment’s cocktail menu is as beloved as its classic cuts. JIMMY ROD’S Shave Saloon, Bar and Kitchen is more than the sum of its parts – parts that are varied and impressive in their own right. Part barbershop, part eatery, part bar (the name should make that fairly obvious), the Brisbane CBD-set establishment is also the 12th salon in the Jimmy Rod brand and indicative of its future as the chain’s new flagship store. “I wanted to mix up, I want to test myself,” the eponymous Jimmy Rod shared. “Barbershops for us now are kind of second nature, we know what guys want, so it’s more of a challenge to test ourselves to get into something a bit different. So I thought ‘what’s better than whiskey, beer and haircuts? And why not put them together?’” The barbershop is the continuation of the Jimmy Rod empire, with more of a focus on the hospitality industry. Seating 60 patrons and incorporating a full service bar and kitchen menu, the establishment puts the five-chair barbershop as a feature in the back. While his previous franchises have often included alcohol, and even a café, this one puts the most emphasis on the food and beverage element. “We have a killer Reuben sandwich, that’s kind of our signature dish, we do coffee as well, so people come in and have their meetings, you don’t have to go in there and get a haircut, it’s not based around that, we want people to come in and have a drink after work, Friday’s are always pretty packed already,” Jimmy shared. Beer, wine and a world-class cocktail menu have also been instrumental in enticing a mostly corporate clientele through the flagship salon’s glass doors. Still, don’t count the barbershop area out. The hairdressing facet is Jimmy’s background – he’s been barbering since he was 16 and owned his first salon by 21 – and as such, the barbering element still feels like a highlight. The salon team’s signature cut throat shaves are always in high demand while every look from classic Don Draper-esque cuts to messy
textured styles, working with both short hair and long hair, are part of their extensive repertoire. The team describe themselves as ‘modern barbers’, renowned for their classic work with the ability to be progressive. Weekends at the salon are now centred around a very important tradition and new business initiative – with bucks parties coming in for some necessary pampering. “It’s a big thing now, we’re having bucks parties and grooms parties so a lot of the guys coming in have shaves and haircuts before they get married,” Jimmy explained. “They can come in, drink some beers, have a shave, get a tidy up and then get married, and it’s a bonding event for the guys that are coming in, so we’re going to base our Saturdays around that.” We’re on board – why should prewedding luxury be exclusive to the ladies? This old school-style treat and those classic trademark looks suits the vintage ‘20s, 30s New York and Chicago’ aesthetic of the establishment perfectly. Wary of becoming too much of a one-note franchise, Jimmy ensures all his salons have their own identity, so that fans of one particular Jimmy Rod salon will be keen to check out the others. This establishment is comprised of suave leather chairs – brown in the restaurant and black in the barbershop – and green tiles for detail in the salon and bar. While the restaurant section has a somewhat rustic, wooden feel to it, the barbershop keeps it clean and white. Glass panelling and full-length windows expand the space, creating an overall vibe Jimmy praises for its uniqueness. Branded ‘the hipster barbershop’ (although Jimmy swears they’re not really that hipster), Jimmy Rod’s Shave Saloon, Bar and Kitchen draws on Jimmy’s incomparable experience owning salons, while focusing on the company’s new appreciation for hospitality. With salons set up all over the country – from regional areas to Australia’s major cities – Jimmy has big plans to introduce new barbershops, eateries and flagship salons within the coming months and years. Look out for the next cool-kid hang out, inevitably coming to your area very soon. For more information visit jimmyrods.com.au/locations/ the-shave-saloon-bar-kitchen INST Y L E M EN - 9

Dr William Mooney has always been one step ahead of the cosmetic surgery fold – developing a well-known facial cosmetic practice in Bondi Junction, his latest is a Bondi Beach abode that makes a top to toe overhaul accessible for everyone.
BORN ON THE notion that people want to feel good and not just look good, Face Plus Medispa is a new extension of Dr Mooney’s successful facial cosmetic ear, nose and throat clinic but with a real walk-in walk out feel. Offering a bespoke selection of the latest skincare and facial rejuvenation treatments, Face Plus is becoming just as popular with the guys as it is with the girls thanks to it’s hip and unassuming brand statement. Boasting meticulous attention to detail yet only moments from the sand and surf of iconic Bondi Beach at the newly completed Oceanfront Pacific Pavilion, Face Plus also offers a stylish ‘Drip and Chill lounge’ and a range of package services designed to take the intimidation out of cosmetic procedures. “Th is is the new frontier. What began as a hangover cure has now become a way to treat patients. With IV therapy you skip the ‘fi rst pass’ which occurs when you eat something orally,” Dr Mooney said. “Everything you eat meets the liver and the liver takes a lot of the veracity out of oral vitamins. Using an IV means you can give an accurate dose that works on the target cells, which are the cells that need it and you can customize exactly according to the patient’s needs.” 10 - INST Y L E M EN
So whether it be a cosmeceutical facial or skin needling to counteract the sun and fun damage of the Sydney lifestyle or a Vitamin A, D, E and K infusion in particular, Face Plus redefi nes the bespoke beauty and wellness. Opt for the ‘Bondi Fusion’ package and be guaranteed to emerge feeling like you’ve had a week long rest and rejuvenation beachside. A cocoon wrap, massage, skin rejuvenation facial and endorphin enhancing light therapy all in a chic and relaxed space takes the clinic feeling away from this highly experienced clinic of experts. Th ink white walls, rustic rugs, stone accents, underwater photography and a customized black surfboard and you have the perfect ingredients for where life meets style. Not only this but a variety of treatment add-ons ensure every type of client can get the best result for them from extractions, ampoules, galvanic current, enzyme exfoliation, oxygen to mole removal for those who have spent lots of time ‘out the back’ or ‘on the beach’ in the Australian sun. “All of our treatments are a safe and effective way to help you feel on top of the world,” said Mooney. www.faceplus.com.au

MY WAY
Rockaway MADISON VOLOSHIN
District Salon DUDE! Are you coming or going? Sweet style, but what's going on with your hair - we should probably cut some length off, hey? Let’s keep this style a bit textured with some layers, think mullet. I'll take the length up to chin height, opening up the face. Maybe some product to control all that frizz and accentuate dem’ curls. Some R+Co Rockaway Salt Spray from roots to ends would do the trick. Then some R+Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste on the ends to hold it together for a dried-texture fi nish. Remember, 'curls get the girls'. Now you look like the rock star you are. Ps. Stop smoking.

Kings Domain WHAT A DUDE. Old mate has nailed his native-street look down to a tee. His hair looks thick and healthy so those two plaits contain his locks well. If I was to make a change it would be all in the cut, keeping it tribal. Firstly I would give him a bold short fringe, I'd take the length at the back to about half, layer it and slice out some heavy sections for dishevelled texture. From there I would undercut both side sections from the temple to the top of the ear, almost down to the skin giving him a Die Antwoord ‘don't f#%k with me’ mullet. All fi nished with Eleven Australia's Sea Salt Spray and Baxter Of California's Hard Cream for a dirty, dry fi nish. Alternative style suggestion would be to turn his plaits into braids from behind the fringe to the nape. Either way this will be one cool cat not to be reckoned with.

THE MAN PERM
It’s here, guys – the Man Perm. Not your super-tight eighties fuzz, think Monte Morgan and Michael Hutchence. Is your male client using mousse and texturising products daily? Then it makes sense. The How (and Why) of the ‘Man Perm’ with Hair Expo Men’s Hairdresser of the Year, Uros Mikic, Kinky Curly Straight. 'Why would a client even consider a perm, they’re out of date, they’re for girls right?' No. Well not really, perms are making a big comeback and there’s one reason, texture. Throughout the last few seasons we’ve been falling deeper in love with texture, and looking ahead, we’re not letting go of this trend. Stylists, celebrity and clientele alike will continue to embrace soft, messy waves; bohemian inspired looks that rely heavily on structure for volume.”

Perm = texture: We’re now looking back to perms for a more permanent texture and volume solution. Men’s style has and will continue to focus heavily on big, voluminous hair – even for those sporting a tight fade on the sides, the likelihood is a cool, individualistic voluminous top accentuating masculinity. And the best way to achieve extra height? Texture. To perm or not to perm? The question is, what looks will benefit from a perm and which won’t. It’s simple, does your client need texture? Do they regularly use mousse or other enhancing hair products? If so this will be a great solution to the busy man’s daily routine.
TIP: If you’re a fan of the very cool front man Monte Morgan from Client Liaison or the iconic Michael Hutchence of INXS, a perm is your pass to signature, rock star curls.

Specialise: Perming is a tricky service that needs to be performed by someone who really understands hair structure and texture. A lengthy discussion with clientele on the type of curl or wave they desire is essential, just like any other professional service.
TIP: Stylists, brush up on your perm skills. It is a skill that we, as an industry, haven’t embraced for a long time, but the current trends and newly developed techniques are making it easier and safer for our clients.

Don’t Deny It! Call it the Jon Snow effect, actor Kit Harrington has brought the curls back and today’s guys are comfortable enough with themselves to ask for what they want - and curls are it. We are talking soft, tousled, messy curls, not your typical perm ringlets or tight 70s-spiral.

NEWS INTO THE BLUE
Ralph Lauren’s latest men’s fragrance is imbued with the spirit (and scent) of an adventurer. Polo Blue, the title of which is indicative of the product’s rich cobalt blue packaging, contrasts fresh sparks of bergamot and cardamom and intense base note of amber woods, suede accord patchouli and vetiver. Described as ‘refi ned, sensual and masculine’, the scent was created by master perfumer Carlos Benaim, who purposefully blended these vibrant and distinguished tones. 1300 651 991
MALE NAILS
FABY has launched The Male Collection of nail polishes, featuring six masculine shades of gold, grey, dark purple, coffee, forest green and deep blue in matte and shiny finishes. “Coloured nails on men are like temporary tattoos, you are allowed to express yourself with the commitment of ink,” shared Karon McKendrick Taylor, General Manager for FABY Australia. “Male grooming is all about confidence building. If Johnny Depp and Bradley Cooper can wear nail polish and be sex symbols, then the average bloke can too.” 1800 720 807
