W

hat’s up with the boys? We’ve had a lot happen since we fi rst launched our men’s supplement. It’s so much more complicated for guys now – stereotypes are blurred from macho to more feminine gender fluidity and there's an absence of labels and ideals. Add this to an ever increasing portfolio of men’s only products and we may be taking as long as the ladies to get ready (yeah right, we’re not quite as competitive). Th is arsenal of ‘solutions’ for men is becoming increasingly confusing for the guys which is why it’s up to us, the salon and barber to really leverage our knowledge as the go-to grooming destination. Outside of a cosmetic bubble of mainstream brands we have a swag of cool barber style brands creating some great products that are making men feel like men. But what about the ‘Aussie guy’? It’s a hazy phenomenon now considering we’ve become a lot more sophisticated and not just in the looks department. Compared to a lot of countries the Aussie bloke has always been deemed the most uncomplicated but to complete on a global platform now thanks to social media, the culture stakes are high. It’s not just about self-confidence. Last year I talked about how one man’s strike rate on Tinder increased by 75 per cent after his once he added a head of hair to his bald profi le photo– and not much has changed here except the welcome of even more thickening, densifying and hair loss solutions. From the prized mane on a man’s head to eyebrow grooming, hair removal, shaving or a moustache for Movember, it’s really not simple out there anymore. The one thing we are missing in all of this is happiness. We need to be sending positive messages to the world and creating strong role models for personal development. It’s time to contribute to the Movember Foundation – a leading global organization committed to changing the face of men’s health. Men are facing a health crisis that isn’t being talked about and too many young men are dying before their time. It’s not just the average ‘Aussie bloke’ that’s under threat, it’s all men of all ages. So dig deep this Movember and support the men in your life that support you. Because it doesn’t matter how good we look, happiness and health is the only currency we have. the month. If you’ve missed out get planning for something collaborative in 2018. Let’s not leave issues unspoken and let’s keep men feeling strong.

GLORIOUS BASTARDS QT Sydney’s luxe Barbershop manned up as the perfect launch pad for the brutally blokey men’s styling and grooming range, OL’BASTARDS – a relevant and easy to navigate line up that makes men feel like men again, writes Cameron Pine. THE BRAINCHILD OF hairdresser brothers Matt and Danny Semrany, OL’BASTARDS takes the guess work out of men’s grooming with a completely Australian made and manufactured product portfolio. Putting masculinity and nostalgia back into a modern line up of products, it’s everything male clientele need and nothing they don’t. A swag of industry creatives, barbers influencers and stylish names showed up to celebrate the official launch of a simple collection that smells as good as it looks – smooth, strong with a hint of Ol’ Bastard. A pop-up bar with a regular flow of Old Fashions, Patron Tequila and Espresso Martini’s wet Wednesday’s whistle and warmed up the intimate barber space- we saw some leading designers including Luke Sales from Romance Was Born, Mikey Nolan (Double Rainbouu). Well known industry names such as Richard Kavanagh mingled alongside Arnott Olssen (Rogue Homme), Sydney Men’s Styles Hass Murad and the shiny boy

next door Sam Wines – aiding an impressive guest list. Basically a bunch of good blokes celebrating hard work of other good blokes it seems became the perfect recipe to be an Ol’ Bastard. Allowing men’s grooming salons, hairdressers and barbers to use and recommend just one range of products for men, the idea started (not only from the fact that the majority of the duos clients are male) but they were sick of using multiple brands and different products from different companies, “It was time to develop a range that is simple and refi ned and allows men to be men again,” Danny said. “We wanted a brand that sells confidence to men – that represents a certain type of man, who has the confidence of an Ol’ Bastard and a level of masculinity and strength that is stoic,” Danny said. Believing that their products and brand philosophy alone can add to the value of a man, the range doesn’t just celebrate fades and the latest men’s styling fads – length and texture are celebrated through a smoothing shampoo and a hero Volume Dust that added epic levels of volume to those trying out the products on the night. What man doesn’t want volume and strength? A key touch point behind being a true Ol’ Bastard is about staying true to a man's core, or core products in this sense. Feeling more like a saloon fi lled with Ol’ Bastards than a barber shop, Danny kept the formalities short and sweet, “People are often scared to do something different and whether you are dapper and rocking a classic look or setting trends we believe every man is

superior in some way,” Danny said. With more than three years of development and a hell of a lot of ideas behind the brand there was a toast to hopefully more to come. “And if everyone loves the brand and we do all this without anyone noticing the growth and struggle, that’s stoic,” he said. Educating the room on the brand via an entertaining disposition with a few solid one liners rather than a long rambling brand presentation, the story of a high performance grooming line in premium packaging – that harks back to the golden days of men who groomed daily – the story of OL’BASTARDS is told. Anecdotes just like; ‘I’m confident enough to stand toe to toe, I’m stoic enough to let you know this ain’t a joke and I’m proud enough to know I’m an Ol’ Bastard.’ Black, gold, white and a lived in almost grey ‘off-white’ master the neat line up of six products – a Volume Shampoo and Conditioner, Volume Dust, Smoothing Shampoo, Matte Clay and Pomade – everything a man needs to look his best. His hair colour works quite well as it’s a rich deep brown that complements his facial hair and natural complexion. I would love to have free rein on his hair, I feel the edge of the cut is weighing his hair down which minimises his style potential. I’d give him 2 options to consider. For a long style I’d lift the length above his collar and take off the bulk to allow him to be able to brush it back or keep it parted wearing it as a rugged masculine look, prepped with American Crew Grooming Spray and styled with the Defi ning Paste. If he was open to a major change I’d take it much shorter keeping it tight through the sides, up and over the ear with a soft neckline, building the length towards the top leaving it quite disconnected. Th is would allow for maximum length, removing as much weight out as possible so he could keep it groomed whilst still being slightly messy and textured for a natural look. I would use American Crew to give it body and movement with a fi rm hold.

BEN KANE What are your new favourite American Crew products and how do you use them? BK: My favourite products at the moment are Alternator and Firm Hold Styling Cream. I use Alternator prior to styling to create body and texture and to help maintain the style I create. I use Firm Hold Styling Cream as a body building product but also as a finishing product. I love it because it’s so versatile.

From Australia to Brussels, winner of the American Crew All Stars Australian title Ben Kane has seen the best of the barbering world. We talk trends, inspiration and how life has changed since the big win.

Where do you get your inspiration from? BK: I get hair inspiration from @andrewdoeshair but also inspiration from my close friend Nas @thestreetsbarber giving back to the community and making a difference.

How has your career changed since you won American Crew All Stars? BK: Winning has opened up more doors for education as this is a passion of mine. It has also given me more industry exposure through editorial work.

What do you love about being a barber? BK: I love the people, creating relationships and listening to people’s stories. I love being in an environment that feels like home working alongside other talented barbers and creating a culture where we are all passionate about our craft and can have a laugh throughout the day.
